Visa Application: A Step-by-Step Guide

For Guyanese citizens venturing into visa-required territories, a systematic approach to the visa application process is crucial:

Visa Center Appointment

Initiate the process by scheduling an appointment at a local visa application center in Guyana. Booking may require patience due to high demand.

Document Preparation

Assemble necessary documents including your passport, completed visa application form, health insurance details, and more. Some may require verification through an apostille stamp or foreign office certification.

Application Submission and Interview

Submit your application and, if required, attend a visa interview. Biometric data may be collected. Ensure documents are translated and stamped as needed. Processing time varies but typically takes several weeks.

What is the Cost of a US Visa for Guyanese Passport Holders

The cost of a U.S. visa for Guyanese passport holders varies depending on the type of visa being applied for. As of May 30, 2023, the fee for visitor visas for business or tourism (B1/B2) and other non-petition based visas, such as student and exchange visitor visas, increased from $160 to $185. Additionally, the fee for certain petition-based nonimmigrant visas for temporary workers (H, L, O, P, Q, and R categories) increased from $190 to $205. It is important to note that fees may be paid in either U.S. dollars or Guyana dollars at the U.S. Embassy in Georgetown.

What are the Visa requirements for Guyanese Passport Holders traveling to the US

Guyanese passport holders traveling to the United States require a visa for business or tourism purposes. The only visa available for travelers visiting the U.S. is a paper or embassy visa. To enter the United States, Guyanese citizens must have a valid U.S. passport. It is essential to ensure that the passport is unexpired and valid for at least six months beyond the intended date of entry into the U.S. For the most current visa information and requirements, travelers should visit the Embassy of Guyana website and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs website.

What is the duration of stay for Guyanese Passport Holders with a US Visa

Guyanese passport holders with a U.S. visa are typically granted stays of 90 days or less when they meet all requirements. This duration allows travelers to visit the United States for business or tourism purposes within the specified timeframe. It is important for visitors to adhere to the conditions of their visa and ensure compliance with U.S. immigration regulations during their stay.

Travel is more than a physical excursion; it’s an avenue for cultural enrichment, personal growth, and global understanding. Unhindered travel unlocks experiences that broaden horizons, challenge preconceptions, and foster connections.

Guyanese Population Affects Travelling

Guyana unfortunately has a very small population, and we have discussed the consequences here . Considering the small population, only a percentage is prone to travel for tourism around the world. This percentage gets very small considering the limited connectivity with airlines around the world. Most Guyanese resort to spending their overseas vacations in the Caribbean, United States of America, Canada or the United Kingdom. Consequently, Guyana does not get enough recognition as it might deserve.

Visa-Free Countries For Guyanese Passport

However, there are many countries in the world that do recognize Guyana and provide visa-free travel. This is extremely important considering the fact that there are not many diplomatic missions in Guyana that provide consular affairs like issuing visas. Often, for such destinations, Guyanese would have to travel to another country that has a mission accredited to Guyana and receive respective visas/permits.

Alternatively, provided that you have your flights sorted, consider visiting the following countries that provide visa-free entry for Guyanese:

Beyond local issuing of Schengen visas, Guyana aggressively pursuing visa-free EU travels

' data-src=

Guyana is seeking visa-free travel to countries within the European Union (EU) and it hopes that a member state within the bloc can help push this agenda, President Dr. Irfaan Ali said on Tuesday.

Moments after it was announced that Guyanese visitors can travel to the United Kingdom (UK) without a visa from November 09, 2022, the Guyanese Head of State said that similar efforts are being pursued.

“If the UK was still in the EU then that would have been our sponsoring country to get past the EU visa.

“We have to work now on a strong bilateral country in the EU who will be the sponsoring country to push this agenda and I can assure you that work would’ve started and started very aggressively,” he related.

According to Dr. Ali, the UK’s visa waiver helps to demonstrate confidence in Guyana. And that confidence, he posited, strengthens Guyana’s case for visa waivers from other countries.

“…. the UK is part of the developed world and you can’t tell us that you have security concerns beyond a certain level that the UK doesn’t have,” he said pointedly.

As visa-free travel to the EU is being pursued, there is another related issue that the local authorities hope to tackle. That is the issuance of the Schengen visas needed for travel to the Schengen area in Europe.

A Schengen visa is a short-stay visa that allows a person to travel to any member state of the Schengen Area, per stay up to 90 days for tourism or business. This Schengen Area is an area comprising 26 European countries that have officially abolished all passports and all other types of border control at their mutual borders.

In August, President Ali publicly called for an improvement in the issuance of Schengen visas stating that immigration services should be provided in Guyana.

This visa is issued in Suriname and local business players are among those who have complained of the inconvenience of travelling to the neighbouring country for this service.

President Ali said he is confident that this hurdle would be eliminated shortly.

Already, the new European Union (EU) Ambassador to Guyana René Van Nes said that the issuance of this visa in Guyana has his “full attention”.

“I am talking to member states about this and we are really trying to get something into place that will first be a temporary solution that will make it easier for the people of Guyana to get the visa, and then later on there will be a more sustainable solution,” he said during an interview with reporters last month.

Entry requirements

This advice reflects the UK government’s understanding of current rules for people travelling on a full ‘British citizen’ passport from the UK, for the most common types of travel.

The authorities in Guyana set and enforce entry rules. If you’re not sure how these requirements apply to you, contact the Guyana High Commission in the UK .

COVID-19 rules

There are no COVID-19 testing or vaccination requirements for travellers entering Guyana.

Passport validity requirements

To enter Guyana, your passport must have an ‘expiry date’ at least 6 months after the date you arrive.

Check with your travel provider that your passport and other travel documents meet requirements. Renew your passport if you need to.

You will not be able to enter Guyana if you do not have a valid travel document or try to use a passport that has been reported lost or stolen.

Visa requirements

You do not need a visa to visit Guyana. Visitors can normally stay for 30 days, but you can apply for one-month extensions from Guyana’s immigration and support services .

The Guyanese authorities can arrest visitors who overstay or abuse the conditions of their stay. You could get a one-year prison sentence, a fine of up to 50,000 Guyana dollars (about 250 US dollars) and deportation – at your own expense – upon your release.

Check the requirements for work or student visas with the  Guyana High Commission in the UK  well before you travel.

Vaccination requirements

You must have a certificate to prove you’ve had a yellow fever vaccination if you’re coming from a country listed as a transmission risk .

For full details about medical entry requirements and recommended vaccinations, including yellow fever, see TravelHealthPro’s Guyana guide .

Customs rules

There are strict rules about goods you can take into or out of Guyana. You must declare anything that may be prohibited or subject to tax or duty.
