Crystal Symphony is so good you could be forgiven for thinking it’s too good to be true. The legendary cruise ship has returned to service with magnificent suites, butler service, delectable dining and that most exclusive of all modern luxuries; space to call your own.

Now under the careful oversight of new owners the A&K Travel group (with former Silversea chairman Manfredi Lefebvre d’Ovidio ), Crystal Symphony offers a very special cruise experience. Made even more so thanks to the intuitive and warm service provided by the experienced crew, 80-percent of whom previously worked for Crystal Cruises.

  • Exceptional cuisine.
  • Personal butlers.
  • Outstanding service.
  • All new suites and refreshed public areas.

Crystal Symphony is unique. Built in Finland and launched in May 1995 the vessel is 238 m. / 781 ft. long with 12 decks. The cruise ship originally had room for over 900 passengers. However, when the A&K Group purchased Crystal they invested heavily in improving the fleet.

The spectacular Crystal Plaza atrium on Crystal Symphony.

So on Crystal Symphony they started by reducing capacity to 606 guests. This allowed them to transform the accommodation decks with bigger suites as well as brand new guest rooms. Crystal Symphony’s restaurants, bars and lounges also got a make over.

Crystal Symphony's acclaimed Waterside Restaurant.

It’s worth noting that the casino has gone, making way for a spacious lounge.

New water treatment and energy recovery systems have also made Crystal Symphony greener . In addition, fuel consumption was reduced by painting a special treatment on the hull.

The relaunch of Crystal Symphony took place in September 2023. It is a classic reborn; made better than new.

Crystal Symphony serves some of the best food at sea. Indeed, the cuisine in the Waterside Restaurant is better than any other main dining room afloat. What’s more, a Michelin-starred chef oversees one of the two outstanding speciality restaurants.

In fact there are a total of 9 dining venues on Crystal Symphony; a remarkable number for a vessel so intimate. There is also a tapas-style restaurant, an upmarket buffet and an exclusive private dining room. Not to mention a pool side grill, chic cafe and an ice cream bar.

Seared Ahi Tuna as served in the Waterside Restaurant on Crystal Symphony.

We rate the Waterside Restaurant as the best dining venue; if only for the indulgent, ever changing menu. Dishes like Seared Ahi Tuna with Wasabi Crumble or Turbot & Butter Poached Lobster with Caviar Velouté are sublimely divine. Not to mention Slow Roasted Veal Fillet with Mascarpone Porcini Risotto & Artichoke. Fellow guests would quip the Waterside Restaurant was so good speciality venues weren’t required!

Stir Fried Lobster with Garlic, Asparagus and Shitake Mushrooms, Finished with Truffle Uzu.

That said, you shouldn’t miss the speciality restaurants either. Umi Uma makes a triumphant return to Crystal. Master chef Nobuyki (Nobu) Matusuhisa oversees the menu which has fine quality sashimi and signature dishes like Nobu-Style Black Cod, as well as Lobster with Truffle-Yuzu. A new addition to the Crystal dining scene is Osteria d’Ovidio . Named for the company’s co-owner, it celebrates the cuisine of Italy with superb pasta dishes like Tortello Pasta filled with Braised Beef, Figs Vincotto & Gorgonzolla Cheese. You can also enjoy family-style dining in Tastes Kitchen & Bar with sharable dishes like Crispy Fried Prawn Dumplings, and California Street Tacos with Blackened Swordfish & Pico de Gallo.

For an additional fee there is private dining in the exclusive Vintage Room . It has a degustation menu paired with excellent wines from the ship’s extensive cellar.

A dessert selection in the Marketplace buffet.

The Marketplace buffet also serves outstanding cuisine. It has a casual and easy ambiance that makes it popular with almost everyone on board.

The Bistro cafe on board Crystal Symphony.

The Parisian-style Bistro café has really good coffee not to mention tasty treats. Up on the pool deck the Trident Grill serve lunchtime classics like burgers, melts and salads.

Crystal Symphony’s nightlife is sophisticated and immensely enjoyable. Talented musicians play in the Crystal Cove bar each evening. Down the hall there is dancing in the Starlite Club and a pianist takes requests in the intimate Avenue Salon .

The Crystal Symphony cast perform in the Galaxy Lounge.

A large cast of seasoned performers entertain in the Galaxy Lounge with Broadway-style production shows; these are very good.

On our voyage there were classical performances in the Palm Court . Also, there was late night entertainment with a DJ in the Jade Night Club .

All Crystal Symphony’s guest rooms and suites were refurbished in 2023. Indeed, some decks were entirely gutted to make way for bigger suites.

A Crystal Symphony Double Guest Room with veranda.

There are a relatively small number of Single and Double Guest Rooms . Some have picture windows while others have verandas. These are the least expensive rooms on board.

An Aquamarine Suite in the classic decor on Crystal Symphony.

However, most guests stay in more spacious suites like the Aquamarine Veranda Suite or the delightful Sapphire Veranda Suite which has a separate bedroom.

A Sappire Veranda Suite on Crystal Symphony.

For those who like even more space there is the palatial Junior Crystal Penthouse Suite , or the top of the range Crystal Penthouse Suite with an opulent spa-style bathroom.

It’s worth noting that the decor of some suites has not changed. This is the result of consultation with long-time Crystal guests, some of whom preferred what they knew.

Crystal Symphony has an indulgent spa known as Aurōra. Inspired by the Goddess of Dawn, the Aurōra spa is an oasis of calm in a sea of serenity. It successfully captures the essence of early morning tranquility; there is even a starlit ceiling. Indeed, Aurōra specialise in light therapies with treatments like the 50 minute duration LED & Cryo Facial Experience. I enjoyed a blissful massage treatment ; one of the most relaxing I can remember.

The Seahorse Pool on the Crystal Symphony cruise ship.

The sparkling Crystal Symphony swimming pool is perfect for a refreshing dip; and it’s surrounded by a glorious teak deck with sun loungers. There is also a large gym with exercise machines and free weights, as well as spin, pilates and yoga classes.

Shuffleboard on a teak cruise ship deck.

You can play shuffleboard or jog on the magnificent promenade decks. The Wimbledon Court is also open for tennis, or you can practice your golf swing in the driving nets on the top deck.

There is a terrific range of activities on board Crystal Symphony. The Hollywood Theatre has movie screenings; on my voyage these included “About My Father” with Robert De Niro and “Book Club: The Next Chapter” with Jane Fonda.

The Palm Court lounge and bar on the Crystal Symphony cruise ship.

In the Palm Court you can enjoy decadent afternoon teas. Crystal Symphony also has photography and computer classes, seminars on improving posture and skin care as well as ladies pamper parties. Not to mention spa raffles valued at USD 500.

The library on board Crystal Symphony.

There is a peaceful, well stocked library which is open every day. If you enjoy golf you will appreciate the Golf Clinic with the ship’s resident instructor. Fitness fanatics can also join the daily yoga and spin classes.

In addition, there are jewellery presentations in the boutique as well as lectures from guest speakers, unhosted bridge, team trivia and mar jongg. Also, there are get togethers for veterans and friends of Bill W.

It’s also worth noting that Crystal has continued its Stateroom Open House program showcasing selected suites and Penthouses. Watch the daily Reflections newsletter for availability.

Crystal Symphony has shore excursions catering to all interests and abilities, from scenic bus tours to small group cultural explorations.

A Crystal Symphony shore excursion in Corfu, Greece.

On my voyage we joined a small group 4WD tour into the highlands of Corfu, Greece. We discovered almost deserted villages not to mention a forgotten way of life. Few others who visit the island are afforded such a unique experience.

By contrast, on another day we took a little boat to a delightful local beach near Dubrovnik, Croatia for an afternoon of fun in sun with the locals.

There are also chef’s market tours, curated visits to museums, galleries and even luncheons on farms and vineyards.

A Crystal Symphony cruise fare is all-inclusive. Beverages are included; even champagne and top-shelf spirits. So too are gratuities, as well as wi-fi and internet access. All meals are also included. There is even an allocation in the two speciality restaurants (based on the voyage duration):

  • Voyages up to 11 days: One complimentary reservation at each restaurant.
  • Voyages from 12 – 22 days: Two complimentary reservations at each restaurant.
  • Voyages of 23 days or more: Three complimentary reservations at each restaurant.

Additional reservations can be made, however they will incur a USD 50 supplement per person.

Most voyages also include a Captain’s Reception & Crystal Society Party. It is a great way to met your fellow guests, or reunite with previous travel companions. There is also a Crystal White Dress Party where everyone wears white. It is usually held in the Crystal Plaza with entertainment by the Crystal Showband.

In addition, Crystal Symphony has a free shuttle bus service between the port and downtown (if it is not within walking distance).

There is also a self-service laundry. However, it’s worth noting that certain suite categories get a free dry cleaning and pressing allowance.

The Crystal Symphony dress code can best be described as ‘resort-chic’.

During the day guests are encouraged to wear casual attire – even in the restaurants. So clothing like sundresses, shorts, jeans, T-shirts or linen garments are all fine. In the Trident Grill, Tastes, and the Marketplace buffet you can also wear covered swimsuits.

It probably goes without saying, but you cannot wear swimwear on its own, bathrobes, bare feet, tank tops or baseball caps in dining venues.

After 6:00pm the Crystal Symphony dress code changes to Evening Resort style. So men wear slacks or dark jeans and a collared shirt (jacket optional). Women wear slacks, dark jeans or a skirt, and a blouse.

On formal nights men should wear suits or tuxedos and collared shirts. Ties are optional. Women should wear cocktail dresses or gowns, suits, evening skirts or pants with an elegant top.

It’s hardly surprising that many guests have sailed on Crystal Symphony before; the ship has a loyal following.

Guests range in age from 35 to 75-years old. However, there can be families with young children on board too; especially on warm weather voyages.

Most guests come from the USA and UK, although Canadians, Australians and Europeans also enjoy Crystal Symphony.

It’s worth noting that Crystal Symphony is also gay-friendly.

Crystal Symphony is an excellent choice if you enjoy the good life. There is exquisite dining, intuitive service and a sublime sense of privacy as well as sophisticated entertainment and thoughtfully curated shore excursions. Indeed, Crystal Symphony is so good you’d be forgiven for thinking it’s too good to be true.

Who Owns the Crystal Symphony Cruise Ship? Legal Issues Surface

Crystal Symphony, a cruise ship owned by Genting Hong Kong, was rerouted over the weekend to avoid arrest due to $1.2 million in unpaid fuel bills.

Kathryn Underwood - Author

Jan. 24 2022, Published 11:09 a.m. ET

Passengers on a two-week cruise that started in Miami on Jan. 8 didn't get the relaxing vacation they expected. Thanks to over $1.2 million in unpaid fuel bills, the Crystal Symphony cruise ship was delayed and rerouted over the weekend. The change upended customers’ travel plans and left cruise staff uncertain of their employment future.

Crystal Symphony is one of Genting Hong Kong’s fleet of businesses that includes Star Cruises and Dream Cruises in the Asia region, the Resorts World theme park in Manila, and Crystal Cruises. Crystal Cruises offers trips departing from Miami, Barcelona, and Antarctica. Recently, Genting filed to liquidate its business , CNBC reported.

Crystal Serenity, a ship in the Crystal Cruises family.

The Genting Group is Crystal Symphony’s parent organization.

The Genting Group includes Genting Hong Kong, Genting Malaysia, and Genting Singapore. Genting Hong Kong has been in the midst of legal proceedings involving a German regional government.

Genting Hong Kong filed for the ability to draw down $88 million in backstop funding. However, Genting’s filing said that the German federal state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern rejected its application to access the $88 million.

Malaysian tycoon Lim Kok Thay founded the company in 1993 that would become Genting Hong Kong. The cruise company provided diversification away from the Malaysian casino resort run by the Genting Group.

The company has suffered from cruise cancellations due to COVID-19 and widening losses. Lim has resigned as chairman and CEO of Genting Hong Kong. His ownership consisted of a 76 percent stake in Genting Hong Kong. He has stepped down as CEO, effective Jan. 21.

What happened to the Crystal Symphony ship?

Crystal Symphony, one of Genting Hong Kong’s cruise ships, set sail on Jan. 8 from Miami and was due to return to Miami on Jan. 22. However, due to unpaid fuel bills ($1.2 billion from this ship alone), Peninsula Petroleum Far East filed a lawsuit against the ship, Crystal Cruises and Star Cruises (HK) Limited.

Judge Darrin Gayles, a U.S. federal judge of the District Court in Southern Florida, approved the arrest warrant and ordered the seizure of Crystal Symphony.

Attorney J. Stephen Simms, who was representing Peninsula Petroleum Far East, told Bloomberg that although he expected the ship to avoid docking in Miami, it would be ready to arrest the ship there if it arrived as planned.

According to The New York Times , the ship was rerouted to Bimini in the Bahamas in an attempt to avoid arrest by federal authorities in Miami. Passengers were cared for on the ship for an extra day and then ferried to Ft. Lauderdale’s Port Everglades on Jan. 23.

Peninsula Petroleum Far East requests that the Crystal Symphony be sold to help pay the $1.2 million in unpaid claims. The total owed between Crystal Cruises and Star Cruises is reportedly $4.6 million.

Crystal Cruises is also suspending two other ships’ voyages through April 29. Jack Anderson, the president of Crystal Cruises, said, “This was an extremely difficult decision but a prudent one given the current business environment and recent developments with our parent company, Genting Hong Kong.”

A&k purchase of crystal cruises receives applause from travel industry.

The third time was the charm. After at least two previous attempts to buy Crystal Cruises, Manfredi Lefebvre d'Ovidio ( Forbes Billionaires, #1,929, $1.3b ) has bought the bankrupt line's brand and two ocean vessels, Crystal Serenity and Crystal Symphony . It marks his third venture on the high seas. In the late 1980s, his family sold Sitmar Cruises to P&O. He then launched Silversea Cruises as one of the first lines with purpose-built luxury cruise ships before selling it last decade to Royal Caribbean in two tranches for $1.25 billion.

Terms of this deal weren't disclosed. However, trade publication Travel Weekly reports the Serenity, built-in 2003, was sold for $103 million, and the Symphony, which debuted in 1995, went for $25 million.

For three decades, Crystal racked up shelves of awards from publications like Travel+Leisure, Conde Nast Traveler and Cruise Critic as a top luxury cruise line. It was also an innovator in areas like specialty dining partnering with celebrity Nobuyuki "Nobu" Matsuhisa. Well-heeled customers spent six figures securing the same cabin each year for round-the-world cruises and other exotic itineraries that lasted for two to three months.

This time, Lefebvre will be able to combine ocean-going luxury with Abercrombie & Kent , the white-shoe travel company he bought in 2019 and is best known for its silver spoon safaris and private jet tours led by its James Bond-like founder Geoffrey Kent, who still accompanies some journeys.

In a statement, Lefebvre said, "I am thrilled to start this new chapter and to be back in an industry that has always had, and always will have a special place in my heart." He added, "When the opportunity arose to acquire Crystal Cruises, I did not think about it twice. Having next to me my incredible friend and inspiring leader Geoffrey Kent makes this venture even more enjoyable,"

A&K has hired a well-known cruise ship management firm to operate the ships. In a press release, the company said of the selection, "With their unique experience, global scale and passionate team, V.Ships Leisure was the natural choice."

Crystal's ships have been docked since January, when troubles at parent Hong Kong-based Genting led to a series of bankruptcies with its cruise industry holdings, including a German shipyard.

Mary Jean Tully, a top seller of luxury cruises and CEO of Tully Luxury Travel, says, "Manfredi is smart…I am sure he will hire the Crystal’s (onboard) crew back. That is what made the company so successful all these years."

She notes the deal does not cover Crystal's debts, including as much as $100 million in deposits for future cruises that were canceled when the line shuttered. "Many clients were burned by the demise of Crystal," Tully adds.

Anne Scully, a Partner at luxury travel agency EmbarkBeyond, says of the new buyer, "It couldn't be any better. Look how Manfredi built Silversea from scratch to what was in a few years the top-rated luxury cruise line in its category. He's a legend in the industry. I think it's good for the industry."

Scully notes Lefebvre is popular even with competitors. Viking Cruises Founder and Chairman Torstein Hagen named one of the restaurants on his ocean ships Manfredi.

She won't be surprised if there are incentives or credits offered to past customers of Crystal and those that lost money. "It wouldn't be a bad idea to give them some type of thank you for your support. Manfredi is very savvy, and he has always built top teams, and everything he does has always been very customer focused. I expect another winner."

James Shillinglaw, Editor of Insider Travel Report, adds, "It's great he's back in the cruise industry." The veteran travel journalist believes more deals could be in the works. He calls Crystal's five river vessels "a good fit" for A&K, which currently charters river vessels for its European river cruises.

He also expects future orders for new ships. "The (Crystal ocean) ships have been beautifully maintained, but the shelf life will be limited at some point. If he wants to make a true go of it, he has to order new ships," Shillinglaw says.

According to the press announcement, global law firm Paul Hastings LLP acted for A&K Travel Group Ltd. Callenders Law acted for A&K Travel Group Ltd. in respect of Bahamian law, while HFW and Stephenson Harwood LLP provided maritime law expertise. CMC Capital, Limited advised A&K Travel Group Ltd. in the acquisition.

Crystal Cruises will set sail again this summer with new name, 'personalized service'

who owns crystal symphony cruise ship

Crystal Cruises is back with a new name and a new look.

After  suspending operations  last year, the cruise line is relaunching as Crystal and will set sail again on July 31, the brand said Wednesday.

The A&K Travel Group, which owns the luxury travel company Abercrombie & Kent, acquired the Crystal Cruises brand last year along with its Crystal Symphony and Crystal Serenity ships, which have been refurbished with larger suites and revamped amenities.

"I am delighted to announce that Crystal is reborn, with Crystal Serenity and Crystal Symphony reimagined and enhancements made to every part of our guests' journey," Crystal president Jack Anderson said in a news release .

How long can you be on a cruise?: Why some passengers opt to sail for 6 months or longer

What is the best way to travel to Alaska?: Cunard is offering a cruise and train experience

Crystal Cruises  reportedly shut down  at least its U.S. operations last year after an arrest warrant had been issued for the Crystal Symphony because of unpaid fuel bills. The cruise line had previously suspended sailings for several months after its parent company, Genting Hong Kong, declared bankruptcy in January 2022.

Royal Caribbean Group also acquired another former Crystal Cruises ship , Crystal Endeavor, which joined the Silversea Cruises fleet as Silver Endeavour.

Where will Crystal sail?

With the tagline, "Exceptional at Sea," Crystal will sail to destinations around the world, including the Mediterranean, the Caribbean, Alaska, Canada and New England and more.

The relaunched line's first sailing on July 31 will be a 12-night voyage from Marseille, France, to Lisbon, Portugal , on Crystal Serenity.

What can guests expect from Crystal?

Travelers can expect larger accommodations and upgraded features on board.

"Palatial suites, spacious verandas and guest rooms have been rolled out on both ships, reducing overall guest capacity," Anderson said in the release. "Personalized service – long a Crystal signature – has been elevated further."

Anderson said the line's eateries – there are nine on each ship – would serve "authentic food from around the globe," while Abercrombie & Kent's local experts would offer destination-specific experiences.

The ships will also have updated spas and gyms.

How much does a Crystal cruise cost?

A nine-night voyage from San Juan, Puerto Rico, to Miami departing Nov. 23 starts at $3,800 per guest based on double occupancy, according to the line's website , but prices vary by cruise and room category, and include food and drinks on board.

Bookings open Wednesday for travel advisors and travelers who have made $500 open deposits . Other past passengers can book a cruise starting on Feb. 13, and bookings will open to the general public Feb. 22.

Review: Crystal Symphony

What is the line? Crystal Cruises

Name of ship? Crystal Symphony

Passenger occupancy? 606

Itinerary? Crystal Symphony will sail in the Mediterranean, Indian Ocean, Asia, and Australia in 2023 and 2024.

Start out with the big picture—what is this cruise line known for?

Crystal has attracted a following of travelers seeking understated luxury, privacy, and space. Crystal is known for effusive onboard service from longtime cruise veterans who establish yearslong relationships with guests who come back again and again. Butlers carefully catalog guest preferences, from room temperature to the exact specifications of a coffee order—and remember them. Crystal is focused on personalization—want the chefs to whip up your grandmother’s best cookie recipe? If they have the ingredients, they’ll make it happen.

Tell us about the ship in general

Fresh off a down-to-the-steel drydock and refit, the ship feels brand new, with one exception—it was originally built in 1995 before propulsion “pod” technology, so the vibration from the propellers in some parts of the ship is noticeable. The recent refurbishment reduced the passenger count onboard, giving the ship an immense amount of space per passenger—even for a luxury liner (84.2 cubic feet). You won’t find fancy whizz-bang amusements as on larger ships, but between top-notch bars, restaurants (including a Nobu outpost) and entertainment ranging from stage productions, films, lectures, and the line’s legendary White Party, there’s little shortage of amusement onboard.

Who is onboard?

Well-heeled and exceptionally well-traveled. Crystal’s itineraries skew closer to two weeks, so retirees and others with time on on their hands are well-represented onboard, but you’ll also find a smattering of families and multi-generational groups, particularly during holiday periods.

Describe the cabins

Cabins have been refreshed in contemporary color palettes, and there are now single-occupancy cabins which are identical to doubles except they’re inventory-controlled for solo travelers without a single supplement to the fare. All stateroom and suite categories have butler service, although additional services (like free laundry, pressing, and dry-cleaning) are offered in higher-tier suite categories. Design features include Italian marble and high thread count linens, and guests arrive to welcome champagne, a minibar setup replenished daily with complimentary wine, beer, spirits and soft drinks, plus free standard WiFi. Some suite categories have a design choice between contemporary and “classic” designs so fans of the heritage Crystal room design can stick with what they know.

Tell us about the crew

In a word—tenured. Crystal’s onboard crew are your typical international mix, but many of them have been with Crystal their entire careers—many with decades of experience onboard the same ship, building ongoing relationships with repeat cruisers, often greeting them as old friends with hugs at embarkation. Crystal’s ratio of staff to guests is also nearly 1:1, meaning the service is utterly attentive.

What food and drink options are available on board?

Plenty. The main Waterside Restaurant is top-notch, with a menu of both classic and contemporary gastronomic delights. Specialty restaurants include Umi Uma, Nobu Matsuhisa’s Japanese-Peruvian Fusion, and Osteria d’Ovidio, fine Italian dining with regional tasting menus. Specialty restaurants are included in the fare once each for a voyage up to 11 days (longer voyages offer more inclusions) and are unlimited for top-tier suites. There’s also the Bistro, serving coffee and light bites, a cook-to-order grill, Tastes Kitchen & Bar offering tapas-style table service, Scoops Ice Cream Bar, and Marketplace, the buffet-style restaurant, not to mention 24 hour in-suite dining (top tier suites can order in from Umi Uma and Osteria d’Ovidio). For an additional supplement, guests can dine in The Vintage Room for a food and wine pairing experience. Most alcohol is included, so bars like Crystal Cove off the Atrium, the Starlight Club cabaret, pub-style Avenue Saloon, Connoisseur Club cigar bar, and Luxe Night Club are also included, unless guests want top-shelf wines or liquors, which are also available.

Is there a spa on board and is it worth visiting?

The Aurōra Spa offers a fantastical diversity of treatments – everything from coconut poultice, bamboo, hot stone, and Swedish massages to facials, medi-spa treatments to tighten skin and smooth wrinkles, IV treatments, acupuncture, body wraps, teeth whitening, and salon services for hair and nails.

Activities and entertainment

While not offering the host of amenities of a megaship (you won’t find bowling alleys or rollercoasters here) there’s still plenty of sophisticated entertainment, from traditional production shows like jukebox revues, artist tributes or Broadway homages to a theatre for guest lectures and films. There’s also a cabaret, the Starlite Club, which hosts stand-up comedians, lectures or live music for dancing, or the after-hours Jade Night Club for dancing, drinks, and karaoke. Guests will also enjoy the classic, saltwater Seahorse Pool, refreshed workout spaces, tennis courts, and golf driving range on the top decks.

How was the experience for families?

Families are less common on Crystal, but there’s still a dedicated kids and teens clubs called Waves, and Fantasia, respectively. Crystal anticipates offering kids and teens programming on select voyages when passenger numbers warrant.

Where did it sail and how were the excursions? Did anything stand out?

Crystal is in the process of building out a suite of excursions in cooperation with parent Abercrombie & Kent, which specializes in small-group luxury destination experiences.

Are there any stand out sustainability or green initiatives about this cruise?

Recyclable items have separate receptacles and in-room toiletries are in large refillable bottles which help reduce waste.

Anything we missed?

Unlike most cruise lines, Crystal does not restrict how much wine or alcohol guests may bring onboard with them, although they note that restrictions may be in place in some destinations served by the line.

Finally, give a sentence or two on why the cruise is worth booking.

Fairy godmother-like service, endless amounts of space, and premium—well—everything are the hallmarks of the Crystal experience. Travelers seeking a luxury experience with the amenities and choice of a larger cruise ship will be well served onboard a voyage with Crystal.

Crystal Cruises to rise again under new owners

Gene Sloan

It looks like luxury cruise operator Crystal Cruises will rise again.

The high-end travel company A&K Travel Group on Wednesday announced it had bought the bankrupt line's brand name and two biggest oceangoing ships, Crystal Serenity and Crystal Symphony, with plans to relaunch the brand in 2023.

The purchase of the two oceangoing ships was done in conjunction with Heritage, the holding company controlled by former Silversea Cruises owner Manfredi Lefebvre d'Ovidio, A&K said.

For more cruise news, guides and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Lefebvre d'Ovidio also owns a controlling stake in A&K Travel Group, the parent company of luxury tour operator Abercrombie & Kent. He serves as its co-chairman alongside founder Geoffrey Kent.

The announcement comes as various pieces of Crystal Cruises are being sold off by liquidators for the brand, which collapsed along with its parent company Genting Hong Kong earlier this year after revenues plummeted due to COVID-19 pandemic-related shutdowns.

"I am thrilled to start this new chapter and to be back in an industry that has always had, and always will have a special place in my heart," Lefebvre d'Ovidio said in a statement accompanying the announcement.

He and his family have a long history in the cruise business. They owned Sitmar Cruises, which later was merged into Princess Cruises , in the 1980s, and later founded Silversea. Lefebvre d'Ovidio sold Silversea to Royal Caribbean Group, the parent company of Royal Caribbean and Celebrity Cruises , in two transactions starting in 2018.

"Selling the cruise business that belonged to my family for a quarter of a century was a difficult decision, as I knew I would miss this industry immensely," Lefebvre d'Ovidio said in the statement. "Therefore, when the opportunity arose to acquire Crystal Cruises, I did not think about it twice."

Lefebvre d'Ovidio owns 85% of A&K Travel Group, with the remainder owned by Kent. The two luxury travel pioneers have been friends for decades.

"The idea of combining the unparalleled onboard service that Crystal Cruises is known for, with the extraordinary tailor-made experiences Abercrombie & Kent has been successfully providing for our guests for the past 60 years, fills me with excitement, enthusiasm and pride," Kent said in a statement accompanying the announcement.

Crystal Cruises suspended operations in January after its parent company, Genting Hong Kong, ran out of money and filed for a type of bankruptcy that involves a complete liquidation of the firm. In addition to Crystal Cruises, subsidiaries of Genting Hong Kong that controlled Asia-based Dream Cruises and Star Cruises also are being liquidated.

In its announcement, A&K Travel Group only mentioned restarting Crystal Cruises with the two ocean ships that it had acquired.

The fate of several more pieces of Crystal Cruises, most notably its river cruise division, which includes five vessels, and its new expedition ship, Crystal Endeavor , have yet to be announced by the brand's liquidators.

A&K Travel Group and Heritage didn't reveal how much they paid for the two Crystal ships, which were auctioned off to the highest bidder in the Bahamas last week.

Both of the ships will undergo extensive refurbishments before being put back in service, A&K Travel Group said.

Crystal Cruises Is Officially Back — and Just Announced It’s Expanding, With Over-the-top Tours and New Ships

Crystal Serenity has relaunched, with Symphony coming next month — and new ships already in the works.

who owns crystal symphony cruise ship

Crystal Cruises is back on the water — and ready to expand.

The cruise line, which went bankrupt early last year, was acquired by luxury tour operator Abercrombie & Kent Travel Group in June 2022. A&K bought Crystal’s two ocean vessels — Serenity will sail its inaugural journey from Marseille, France, to Lisbon on Monday, July 31, with Symphony following suit on Sept. 1, sailing from Athens to Istanbul.

Today, during a preview sailing for press and travel agents, Cristina Levis, CEO of A&K Travel Group, announced that Crystal plans to expand with four new ships by 2029, including two expedition vessels. The company will start construction on the 650-passenger ocean ship and 220-person expedition ship next year. (Crystal previously offered expedition cruising on Endeavor .) The contracts are not finalized, but Levis said the plans are “quite advanced, particularly for the expedition ship,” which will sail to the Arctic and Antarctica.

It’s worth noting that A&K already has robust Arctic and Antarctic expedition offerings, which sail on Ponant ’s Le Commandant Charcot . “For the foreseeable future, A&K will charter Ponant ships, though over 40 crew members from the former Crystal team will be on board the Ponant voyages,” Levis said.

For the present, though, the focus is on Serenity and Symphony as Crystal returns to the seas. Both ships were given a hefty refresh before welcoming guests — 80 percent of whom are returning fans — back on board. “We went down to the steel,” Levis said. “We’ve rebuilt the rooms [and public spaces], not just refurbished.”

This summer, both Crystal Serenity and Crystal Symphony will sail the Mediterranean Sea and Northern Europe, to destinations like Istanbul; Santorini, Greece; and the U.K.’s Isle of Man, with fares from $3,800 per guest. Symphony will then sail in Asia, Africa, and Australia this fall and winter, while Serenity will tour the Caribbean.

The fleet isn’t the only thing Crystal plans to expand. Crystal’s senior vice president of global marketing, Jacqueline Barney, confirmed plans to weave A&K land tours into Crystal’s 2025 world cruise . “Imagine, if you have a three-day gap between Guayaquil and let’s say, Lima, being able to jump off and taking an extraordinary A&K expedition to the Galápagos and checking that off the bucket list,” she said.

Crystal will announce more itineraries for 2025 in the coming months, but you can book 2023 and 2024 sailings at crystalcruises.com .

Crystal Symphony Itineraries

Crystal symphony review, review of crystal symphony.

The 1995-built Crystal Symphony cruise ship was the first and the smaller of the two Crystal Cruises ships - with fleetmate Crystal Serenity (2003).

The vessel (IMO number 9066667) is currently Bahamas- flagged (MMSI 309168000) and registered in Nassau .

Following extensive drydock refits and refurbishments in 2023, for the new (relaunched by A&K) Crystal Cruises, the Symphony ship restarted revenue operations on September 1st (from Piraeus-Athens), while the Serenity ship restarted on July 31st (from Marseille Fos).

History - construction and ownership

Crystal Cruises was founded in 1988 as a subsidiary of the Japanese NYK Line (Nippon Yusen Kaisha) - one of the world's largest container shipping companies . In 2015, NYK Line sold Crystal Cruises Inc to Genting Hong Kong Ltd (GHK). Following the acquisition, the company was renamed to Crystal Ltd. In January 2022, GHK filed for bankruptcy and all its assets were put to sale. In June 2022, the brand Crystal Cruises was acquired by A&K Travel Group Ltd (Abercrombie & Kent). The company currently groups the ultra-luxury travel brands Crystal Cruises (ocean-going ships), Crystal River Cruises (European riverboats), Crystal Yacht Cruises (mega-yachts), Crystal Luxury Air (aircraft) and Crystal AirCruises (fly-cruise deals).

Following the bankruptcy of the parent company GHK-Genting Hong Kong Ltd in January 2022, the GHK's subsidiary Crystal Cruises Inc (USA) went bankrupt in February.

In June 2022, both Crystal Cruises' ocean ships (Serenity and Symphony) were auctioned in The Bahamas. Both vessels (being under arrest in Freeport Bahamas since February 5th) were sold via a sealed tender auction, with bids submitted to The Bahamas' Supreme Court and a 10% deposit.

On June 15th, Bahamian sources announced that both vessels are sold in the auction - Symphony to CSY Ltd for USD 25 million (EUR 24M / GBP 20,5M) and Serenity to CSE Ltd for USD 103 million (EUR 99M / GBP 84,6M). The financiers were presented by the Bahamian law firm Alexiou Knowles & Co. Reportedly, both shipowning companies (CSY and CSE) are owned by Manfredi Lefebvre d'Ovidio de Clunieres di Balsorano (1953-born multibillionaire, co-owner of Silversea , Chairman of Heritage Group, Co-Chairman of A&K/Abercrombie and Kent).

On June 22nd was announced that both vessels are now owned by A&K Travel Group Ltd - a joint venture of Abercrombie & Kent Ltd (owned by Geoffrey Kent) and Heritage Group Monaco (Lefebvre family-owned private equity specializing in luxury travel, VIP tourism, medical technologies). Following extensive drydock refurbishments, both ships restart operations in 2023 for the relaunched Cristal Cruises brand, which was fully acquired by A&K. For the ships' management, A&K contracted the Monaco-based V.Ships Leisure Ltd (part of V.Group Holdings Ltd).

Crystal Symphony and Serenity left Freeport on July 6th, en route to Europe (arriving in Trieste Italy on July 24th) for drydocking at the Fincantieri shipyard. The project also included installing shore power connectivity that allows the berthed vessel to plug into the port city's power grid for the electricity needed for all hotel operations.

The 1000-passenger ship Crystal Symphony underwent three major drydock refurbishments (in 2006, 2009, 2012) as part of a 5-year fleet renovation plan to redesign all passenger staterooms and add new venues and amenities. The 5-year project cost the company USD 65 million.

The interior spaces were designed by the companies Tillberg (Sweden), II By IV Canada), KNA (USA) and the UK designer firms SMC, Clixby, The Syntax Group, Adfecto, DPA Lighting.

Itineraries

Crystal Symphony itinerary program is based on cruises to Europe (Iceland, UK, Baltic, Mediterranean), Southeast Asia, Australia New Zealand, the Caribbean/Central America, Canada and New England. The ship also operates around-the-world voyages with transits of the Panama Canal and Egypt's Suez Canal .

For the newly acquired by A&K Crystal Cruises, Symphony's maiden voyage left out of Venice on August 26th (2023). This was exclusive (VIP-only) sailing visiting ports in the Adriatic/Croatia (Dubrovnik/Aug 29) and Eastern Mediterranean/Greece (Katakolon-Olympia, Piraeus-Athens). The ship's official inaugural cruise departed from Athens on September 1st.

Following the Coronavirus crisis, in mid-April 2021 was announced that Symphony's entire 2021 program in Europe-Mediterranean (June 6th through December 21st) is canceled and replaced with 10-night "Luxury Caribbean Escapes" (roundtrips from homeports St Johns Antigua and Philipsburg St Maarten ).

  • In mid-July was announced that Symphony will be homeported in Boston MA (Sunday departures from Flynn Cruiseport, August 22 through September 12, 2021) and in NYC (Friday departures from Manhattan Cruise Terminal, starting September 24, 2021). From Boston and New York City, the ship had scheduled 7-night "Luxury Bermuda Escapes". Crystal Symphony's Caribbean deployment was soon extended (November 2021 thru March 2022) with 14x 7-night itineraries (including 2x holiday voyages / 10-night "Connoisseur's Caribbean Holiday", 11-night "Tropical New Year's Celebration") visiting ports in The Netherlands' Lesser Antilles, Virgin Islands, The Bahamas Out Islands (aka Family Islands).

Crystal Symphony Wiki

Crystal Symphony is the older ship of the company's two ocean vessels, with sisterships the fleetmate Crystal Serenity and NYK Line's Asuka 2 (fka Crystal Harmony).

The vessel (STX Finland Kvaerner Masa-Yards Helsinki yard/hull number 1323) has volume 51044 GT-tons, DWT-deadweight tonnage 4500 tons, max draught 8 m. The powerplant is based on 6x Wartisla marine diesel engines (model L58/64) with combined output 36,33 MW (48720 hp). The registered shipowner is CRYSTAL SYMPHONY LTD, while the registered manager is CRYSTAL CRUISES LLC (the previous owner was SYMPHONY HOLDINGS LTD/until 2023).

The ship was launched/floated out from drydock on January 5, 1995, and entered service on May 3rd. Under the previous ownership (until 2023) Crystal Symphony was majorly drydock refurbished three times as part of a 5-year plan (2006, 2009, 2012) at a total cost USD 65 million. This project was Crystal's most extensive upgrade ever. All staterooms and public areas were renovated in 2006. During 2006 drydock was also added the Luxe nightclub. Lido Deck was upgraded in 2009 (with an outdoor Jacuzzi for 20 people) which replaced the swimming pool. In 2009 was changed the Italian restaurant "Prego". During drydock 2012, the public spaces and two theaters were updated - the seating was changed, and some trendy technologies were implemented (projectors, lighting, surround sound).

Maiden Voyage (2023)

Next table shows Crystal Symphony's inaugural cruise (for the relaunched Crystal Cruises under the A&K Travel (Abercrombie & Kent) following the extensive refurbishment in 2023.

The 7-day voyage was priced from US$ 3800 per person ($543 pp per day) with double occupancy.

Crystal Symphony drydock refurbishment 2023 review

In 2023, Crystal Serenity and Crystal Symphony were drydock refitted and fully refurbished at  Fincantieri 's yard in  Trieste . The US$150 million project was undertaken by Crystal Cruises' new owner Abercrombie & Kent (A&K Travel Group).

The refits resulted in staterooms reduction (larger suites, new categories) as well as reduced passenger capacity and enlarged and redesigned public spaces and venues. During the drydocks, Crystal Symphony's cabins were reduced from 452 to 310 (passenger-per-space ratio from 49 to 51), and the pax capacity changed from 904-1040 max to 606-739 max.

As part of the refurbishments, on both ships (Symphony and Serenity) were introduced two new cabin categories - "Junior Crystal Penthouse Suite" and "Single Guest Room with Ocean View" (bookable without single supplements). Additionally, on Symphony was created the new category "Sapphire Oceanview Suite" *with two large windows).

The new Crystal Spa Aurora is a luxurious wellness complex offering various treatments, including Aurora LED, Cryo Facial Experience, Biotec 2.0 Ultimate Facial.

All passenger staterooms on Crystal Symphony were redesigned/enlarged and their categories were changed - Deluxe Oceanview (197x) to Double Guest Room with Oceanview (53x) and Sapphire Oceanview Suite (48x), Deluxe Balcony (148x) to Double Guest Room with Veranda (22x), Seabreeze Penthouse (44x) to Aquamarine Veranda Suite (72x), Seabreeze Penthouse Suite (19x) to Sapphire Veranda Suite (85x), Penthouse Suite (19x) was redesigned/enlarged to Junior Crystal Penthouse Suite (2x), the Penthouses (44x) were redesigned into other cabins and were created single cabins (18x) forward on Deck 7.

According to A&K, the replacement of the engines and other machinery on both ships cost the company US$50+ million. The machinery repairs and upgrades (below deck 4) were needed as the equipment was old and poorly maintained.

Crystal Symphony refurbishment 2020 review

The vessel's drydock 2020 (April 13-23, in Singapore ) was a USD 10 million project planned mainly for regular technical and general maintenance works. Minor upgrades received some public areas and passenger staterooms, among which new carpets and furniture.

Crystal Symphony refurbishment 2017 review

The ship's 2017 drydock refurbishment (September 23 - October 16, done by Lloyd Werft in Bremerhaven Germany ) reduced its passenger capacity in order to enable single-seating dining. Following the drydock, Crystal Symphony's passengers have free Wi-Fi (regardless of cabin category).

On deck 9, two new balcony cabin categories were introduced - Seabreeze Penthouse Suite (12 new suites) and Seabreeze Penthouse (28 new suites). The new staterooms have the same size as the existing Penthouse (365 ft2 / 34 m2) and Penthouse Suite (490 ft2 / 46 m2). Seabreeze Penthouses are connecting cabins (sharing an entryway).

All Penthouses offer enhanced all-inclusive amenities, including butler service, in-cabin dining, complimentary specialty restaurant dining).

Cabin conversions reduced the ship's capacity from 1095 to 848, thus increasing its guest-to-space ratio to 60,2.

Crystal Dining Room was renamed to "Waterside" and upgraded with additional 2- and 4-seat tables. New open-seating dining (between 6-9:30 pm) replaced the old assigned seating and the required dinner reservations. Breakfasts and lunches are served as usual.

Lido Cafe is operated as Marketplace (during the day) and as Churrascaria (steakhouse, by night). The restaurant features an open kitchen and made-to-order dishes. The Marketplace serves buffet breakfast and lunch, while Churrascaria serves casual dinner (between 6-9 pm). The Brazilian-themed Churrascaria restaurant features Caipirinha (welcome cocktail event) and a selection of Brazilian dishes (grilled seafood and meats, tapas, ceviche, salads). Meats are served by “gauchos” (dedicated staff) on traditional meat skewers.

Silk restaurant's menu was upgraded with modern Chinese fare (family-size dinner plates). Self-service is now available at breakfast and lunch, and also includes traditional Chinese food (dumplings, Chinois salad, soup, noodle bar). Dinners at Silk are open-seating (reservations recommended) and between 6-9 pm.

Trident Bar and Grill serves casual grilled food (including fast food - burgers, sandwiches).

Silk Road and The Sushi Bar (both specialty restaurants by celebrity chef Nobu Matsuhisa) were combined and renamed to "Umi Uma". Umi Uma offers Nobu-inspired dishes prepared by Nobu-trained chefs.

Dining reservations for Umi Uma and Prego restaurants are now complimentary for Penthouse passengers. To all other cabin categories, 1 complimentary specialty dining is offered (additional reservations are available at a surcharge).

The new free-of-charge shipwide Wi-Fi is the result of the company's investment in new hardware and software for expanded onboard connectivity and faster (doubled) satellite Internet speed.

Crystal Connect is the new onboard portal for Internet connections and various shipboard info (menus, news, scheduled activities, shore excursions, itinerary ports, international digital news media, movies library, lectures, etc). Crystal Connect (mobile app) is available for personal devices.

Computer University at Sea (enrichment workshops venue) was updated and redesigned.

  • Among the redesigned public spaces is the midship located Starlite Club (panoramic floor-ceiling windows).

All passenger cabins were upgraded with new 42-inch smart HDTVs with interactive panels (infotainment system).

Along with all Lloyd Werft workers, the refurbishment project also involved several hundred crew and sub-contractors. Almaco Group (1998-founded company) was the project's supervisor.

Crystal Symphony refurbishment 2016 review

The list of deck plan changes after the ship's 2016 drydock refurbishment (done by Blohm+Voss in Hamburg Germany , project cost USD 15 million) included:

  • general maintenance works, that included propulsion system upgrades (Rolls-Royce Azimuth thrusters were replaced with new ones), new hull coating, air ducts cleaning, reverse osmosis plant inspection.
  • Introduced was the company's new “Deluxe PURE” category of staterooms (hypoallergenic cabins).
  • On deck 12 were redesigned the Tastes (buffet restaurant) and the Lido area.
  • New energy-saving LED lighting was installed in all public rooms.
  • All Penthouse Suites were overhauled.

The 2016 drydocking project's total cost was USD 15 million.

Crystal Symphony was extensively refitted in 2006 (in Norfolk VA , for USD 23 million) and in 2009 (in Boston MA , for USD 25 million).

Crystal Offering ‘Unique Brand’ in Luxury Market

  • April 24, 2024

Crystal Serenity

“Crystal is truly unique in the market, epitomizing the unparalleled sophistication we offer with award-winning service, exquisite culinary experiences and remarkable innovative entertainment. But what truly sets us apart is how we are rethinking, repositioning and elevating the brand to make it a lifestyle brand at sea,” said Jacqueline Barney, senior vice president of marketing.

“It is the ship experience combined with destination immersion. It is our new, large and lavish accommodations, the service and the sense of the Crystal family. When we say ‘family,’ it is a concept other lines cannot replicate. Many guests come back to see their friends, the crew, and together they form the Crystal family. Many guests have traveled with us for up to 30 years; it is an ambiance I do not see anywhere else.”

Part of the Abercrombie & Kent (A&K) group, Crystal now has the opportunity to leverage years of experience providing luxury vacations, private tours and small group adventures all over the globe.

“We are working at the group level, creating products, itineraries, shore excursions, pre- and post-experiences and special access to destinations that others might not have,” Barney said.

“For 2025, we will be fully integrated with A&K so that our meticulously planned itineraries will offer the most unique destination experiences.”

Crystal has also previously revealed plans to build more classic ships and expedition ships.

“The announcement was made before the inaugural voyages last year,” she added, “and we expect to have more ships by 2029.

“During Covid, I think consumers changed habits, their buying habits and traveling preferences,” Barney continued. “They want more space, personal space, and also a more intimate feeling at the same time.”

So, after the brand and the two ships were acquired, both ships went through an extensive redesign, reconstruction and refurbishment, including the gutting of the entire eighth and ninth decks where smaller staterooms were doubled or tripled up to create new suites, according to Barney, who said other accommodations were converted into solo staterooms.

Thus, the guest capacity of both ships was dramatically reduced, from around 960 to 606 for the Crystal Symphony and from around 1,000 to 740 for the Crystal Serenity.

Meanwhile the crew to guest ratio is nearly one-to-one.

The future is based on the brand work that was done at the beginning of the new company in 2022, Barney noted: “How we want to position the brand and how we want the market to perceive the brand, relates to how we see the brand evolving and growing over time.

“We have changed the product to deliver a more intimate experience by reducing the guest capacity and increasing the guest to space ratio, bringing back the hallmark pillars that are led by service, dining and entertainment, and we are working with A&K to deliver the most remarkable experiences.”

Looking forward, Barney said: “We are not Crystal Cruises anymore, we are Crystal, we are a lifestyle brand, and we are an experience where likeminded individuals come together and create memories and experiences.

“I see us growing to a much larger fleet, operating sustainably and going to unique places, offering incredible experiences, and truly standing out as a brand in our own category in the industry.”

The 9 best luxury cruise lines for elegance and exclusivity

MSN has partnered with The Points Guy for our coverage of credit card products. MSN and The Points Guy may receive a commission from card issuers.

Like fine European hotels or the fanciest boutique properties, the ships of the best luxury cruise lines are designed to appeal to people who seek — and can afford — an elegant style of travel.

Champagne flows. You can snack on caviar. Exquisite cuisine is prepared a la minute and accompanied by pours of fine wines. Onboard lounges are wonderfully intimate, with no mass-market anything. When you rest your head, it’s on a luxury mattress topped with the finest linens.

For more cruise guides, news and tips, sign up for TPG’s cruise newsletter .

The byword is exclusivity. Perks included in the cruise fare may include beverages, Wi-Fi, fresh flowers, extraordinary pampering and, in some cases, butler service.

The price to get on board could be $1,000 per person, per day. For top suites, it could be much, much more.

Here are our picks for the top nine luxury cruise lines currently operating.

Atlas Ocean Voyages

Catering to adventurous luxury cruise travelers with money to spend, the new cruise line Atlas Ocean Voyages , which debuted in the summer of 2021, offers upscale experiences on small ships that carry just 196 passengers.

World Navigator, World Traveller and World Voyager, the first three of five planned vessels in the fleet, carry their own landing craft, Jet Skis, kayaks and paddleboards, all of which can be used by passengers wishing for some adventure while exploring the world on itineraries that include the Mediterranean, Portugal and the British Isles, as well as more remote locales like the Arctic and Antarctica.

Although the onboard dress code is casual, the ships are anything but, featuring elegant, retro-chic decor and marble floors.

In addition to including Wi-Fi, crew gratuities, alcohol and some shore excursions in its fares, Atlas provides all passengers with emergency medical evacuation insurance to handle unexpected illness or injury in the remote locations its ships sail.

Overall, Atlas has found a way to seamlessly meld swank and leisure, making it one of our favorite luxury cruise lines.

Silversea Cruises

Silversea , with a dozen 100- to 728-passenger ships, has some of the most diverse geographic itineraries of any line, bringing guests to destinations around the world, including such remote places as the Arctic and Antarctica .

Now owned by Royal Caribbean Group (the same company that owns Royal Caribbean and Celebrity Cruises ), the luxury cruise line delivers stylish, contemporary luxury — more streamlined than opulent — complemented by pleasantly extreme pampering.

Every Silversea ship passenger stays in a suite with a butler delivering superb service — even on the 100-passenger Silver Origin in the remote Galapagos, where your butler might take extraordinary care to get a spot off your hiking boots. Suite niceties include Bulgari bath products and marble bathrooms with both tubs and showers.

Silversea ships offer a wide choice of dining venues (some with a fee) designed to satisfy many tastes, whether you prefer sushi, foie gras or a great, thin-crust pizza.

Drinks are on the house, including a long list of fine wine pours. S.A.L.T., a new dining and culinary education concept, brings local tastes on board together with experts who share insight into each dish and beverage. The program also features culinary-focused excursions ashore.

Silversea’s expedition ships are equipped for polar locales. On sailings in those regions, each passenger receives a free jacket to keep them warm and cozy.

Regent Seven Seas Cruises

Another of our top luxury cruise lines, Regent Seven Seas Cruises is proudly opulent. Floating palaces are its calling card, along with the most inclusive fares of all the luxury lines. Business-class airfare, pre-cruise luxury hotel stays and shore excursions in every port are on the long list of perks.

The goal is knock-you-off-your-feet luxury. If you don’t get that point at first, look down at the many yards of Carrara marble under your feet, then gaze up at the Czech crystal chandeliers. Or spot the Picassos and Chagalls among your ship’s stunning, mostly Latin-focused art collections.

The five 490- to 750-passenger ships in the Regent fleet get fancier as they get larger. On the two newest, Seven Seas Explorer and Seven Seas Splendor , everyone stays in a roomy suite with an oversized balcony and marble bathroom. (A third sister vessel, Seven Seas Grandeur, is due to begin sailing in December.)

The top Regent Suites on these new ships are mansions at sea and come with solariums, private spas with saunas and steam rooms and Steinway pianos in their living rooms. They also have handmade beds that cost up to $200,000 apiece.

Lavishly decked-out restaurants, with cushy bars nearby, include Prime 7, a fan favorite for its classic steakhouse menu, including jumbo lump crab cakes, U.S.D.A. prime-aged beef and Alaskan king crab legs.

Long considered one of the great luxury lines, if not the greatest, Crystal has just resumed operations this year after shutting down during the COVID-19 pandemic. And as we wrote about recently, it’s as good as ever .

In the wake of its comeback, Crystal is operating just the two biggest ocean ships from its past: the 606-passenger Crystal Symphony and 740-passenger Crystal Serenity (though it already has plans for an expansion ). Both of the vessels, which globetrot around the world, are all-inclusive and on the glitzy side — perfect for a crowd looking for a throwback. Passengers make appearances walking down grand staircases dressed to the nines, meet for afternoon tea and dance the night away.

Everything operates in the upper-tier way, from the spa and expansive fitness offerings to the restaurants — which include a Nobu eatery.

Those booked in penthouses and higher-category suites receive service from a tuxedo-clad butler who will do everything from unpacking your luggage to helping you set up a private cocktail party. A particular perk is having the butler bring Nobu sushi on a silver tray.

Owned by Carnival Corporation, Seabourn ’s top-of-the-line, 264- to 600-passenger ships deliver comfortable, modern luxury that can be as fancy or casual as you like.

If you want to show off your heirloom jewels, go ahead, but on most nights, a jacket is optional in the ship’s restaurants. If you prefer not to dress up for formal night, you can still eat well at casual alternatives.

High service is a trademark of this luxury cruise line. Your suite steward will draw you a bath scented with your choice of bath oil. For a snack, order the complimentary caviar.

Dining is over the top at the restaurants, such as the retro-chic steakhouses with menus created by famed chef Thomas Keller (of French Laundry fame). When you tire of prime beef, order lobster thermidor or sink into the delicious comfort of Keller’s roast chicken. All dining is included in your fare.

Throughout the ship, complimentary spirits, fine wines and house Champagne flow freely. This leads to easy socializing in the bars and lounges on board.

The line’s two newest ships, the 264-passenger Seabourn Venture and Seabourn Pursuit, are built with a tough “polar class” design to operate in the ice-filled waters of the Arctic and Antarctica. They’re equipped with state-of-the-art submarines for undersea views.

A 26-person expedition team runs the two dozen Zodiacs that get you up close to glaciers and icebergs.

Paul Gauguin Cruises

Looking to sail through romantic French Polynesia in complete luxury? Look to South Pacific-based Paul Gauguin for an all-inclusive, high-end home base.

The ship is immersed in all things Polynesian, with a troupe of local performers on board to entertain guests with local song, dance and craft lessons.

Couples can embrace the romance of the region by participating in a Polynesian blessing ceremony. Paul Gauguin gives its guests special access to a secluded beach on Bora Bora and a private island off the coast of Taha’a, where you can indulge in water sports, a gourmet barbecue and bar service.

To make the most of the aquamarine waters, complimentary water sports, such as paddleboarding and kayaking, are available straight from the ship’s marina and every guest receives snorkel gear for use during the cruise, free of charge.

On board, guests enjoy five-star French and Polynesian cuisine, with all beverages complimentary throughout the ship and in your in-room minifridge.

With 209 crew members on hand to serve 330 passengers, service is top-notch and full of Polynesian hospitality, but all gratuities are already included in your fare.

Not all cabins are suites, but the top suites on the ship come with butler service. Also, should you dare to consider the outside world, you can connect with friends and family back home with complimentary Wi-Fi throughout the ship.

Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours

Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours puts the elegance into adventure with its two 228-passenger expedition yachts, Scenic Eclipse and Scenic Eclipse II.

Sure, its ships have reinforced hulls capable of breaking through ice, but they also feature chic bars serving 130 different kinds of whiskey (all included in your fare) and high-end onboard spas (treatments cost extra, alas).

For small ships, Scenic’s yachts still manage to offer five gourmet dining venues, plus additional private dining options (such as a chef’s table or teppanyaki grill), room service and culinary masterclasses in a show kitchen.

Sample candied foie gras, daily risottos or sushi made with fish flown from Japan, all while sailing through remote waters. Wash it down with whatever you like because all but the most premium beverages are included.

After a long day of Zodiac, submersible or helicopter rides (yes, all these high-tech exploration toys are on board), you can retreat to your well-appointed suite, with distinct sleeping and living areas, plus a balcony.

Thoughtful touches include Illy coffee machines, Dyson hair dryers, remote-control adjustable beds, plentiful outlets and USB ports, and umbrellas and binoculars for use on your vacation. Did we mention you also have access to a butler for all your onboard needs?

Scenic’s all-inclusive fares include dining and drinks, Wi-Fi, gratuities, airport transfers and shore excursions led by the line’s knowledgeable expedition leaders.

Oceania Cruises

Sometimes luxury means more space to spread out and multiple onboard options for a truly outstanding meal.

That’s the approach upscale cruise line Oceania Cruises takes with its fleet of seven 648- to 1,238-passenger ships (the last of which, Oceania Vista , just debuted in May and is its most elegant yet).

Foodies will drool over menus overseen by Master Chef Jacques Pepin in all-included venues specializing in French, Italian, Asian and steakhouse cuisine.

Cruisers truly passionate about food and wine will want to splurge on wine-paired dinners at La Reserve by Wine Spectator or enjoy a gourmet, multi-course menu with an intimate group at Privee.

Get hands-on cooking experience with a class in The Culinary Center or explore the food culture ashore with a Culinary Discovery Tour.

Oceania also embraces wellness with its Aquamar Spa and Vitality Center. Treat yourself to a decadent spa treatment or wellness-themed shore excursion, or take care of your body with complimentary fitness classes and plant-based menus at onboard restaurants.

Oceania’s fares are not as inclusive as some of the small-ship lines mentioned above, but guests can choose a higher-priced fare that is more inclusive with the line’s “simply MORE” promotion. These fares include free airfare and airport transfers, complimentary Wi-Fi and a choice of a select number of free excursions, as well as free specialty dining reservations, Champagne and wine.

Viking does not like to call itself a luxury cruise line, but we’d definitely put it in that category for the inclusive fares, fine dining and smart design of its ocean-going ships.

Its 10 traditional cruise ships are nearly identical, each carrying 930 guests, while two expedition vessels carry 378 guests and combine elegant design with the latest technology in polar exploration.

Viking’s fares are inclusive but not all-inclusive, and its ships sport clean Scandinavian design rather than opulent decor. Necessities such as Wi-Fi and self-serve laundry are complimentary, as are all nonalcoholic beverages and beer and wine with lunch and dinner.

Guests can enjoy dining in multiple onboard venues, plus room service, for no extra cost. Don’t miss the Italian Manfredi’s or a gorgeous afternoon tea spread in the glass-enclosed Wintergarden.

Cabins may not have an overtly opulent feel, but they have all the right touches, including balconies in every room, quiet-closing drawers, heated bathroom floors and plentiful USB ports and outlets.

The destination-focused cruise line adds as many days in port as it can to each itinerary and offers a free shore excursion in every port.

Viking ships have a large presence in Europe, sailing the Mediterranean and in northern Europe, but also explore the world from Alaska and the Caribbean to Asia and Australia.

Related: The 5 best destinations you can visit on a Viking ship

Its expedition ships, Viking Polaris and Viking Octantis, explore Antarctica, as well as the Great Lakes and Canada.

The ships boast several expedition cruising firsts, including a boarding area for excursion craft that’s inside the ship (rather than docked outside it) and cabins with floor-to-ceiling glass windows that slide open to let in the fresh air.

Like the ocean ships, they feature Scandinavian design, a glass-walled Explorers’ Lounge and signature Viking restaurants Manfredi’s and Mamsen’s (offering Norwegian specialties).
