For those looking to kit themselves out with golf equipment from a standing start, buying a complete golf club set is one of the best options. Wilson is one of the core golf brands that has a few offerings in this department, including the X31 package set. This features 10 clubs (driver, 3-wood, 5-hybrid, 6 iron-SW and putter) plus a stand bag. The video review below reveals what you can expect and what we thought of the Wilson X31 package set.

We wanted to see what you can expect in terms of performance for your money so I recently tested the Wilson X31 set both on the golf course and on a launch monitor. Is this one of the best golf clubs sets on the market and if so, who is it aimed at?

I’m going to start with what I thought was undoubtedly the highlight of the set - the irons. Both in the bag and behind the ball, these have a simple, smart look. The toplines are fairly thick without being too bulky or chunky. If you are a beginner or high handicap golfer, the profile of the irons should be confidence inspiring. On the flip side, if you are after a sleek, traditional-looking set, these may not fit the bill. I liked the look down behind the ball but, if I’m being picky, I’d have liked to see a fraction more space between heel and toe, as to my eye these were fairly compact. 

The performance however, was superb. From the first hit, I was particularly impressed by how solid these felt. The ball flights were strong too and the overall carry distances were just as I would expect from my own set of Mizuno JPX 919 Forged irons . Throughout the round I played with this set, the irons impressed - providing me with good consistency both in terms of ball-striking and distance.   

There are three woods in the line-up and the gaps between them make sense. I would describe the look as quite basic and lacking the same aesthetic appeal of the irons. However, what I did like was the contrast between the darker finish on the crown and the silver face. This really highlights the loft on offer and makes all of the woods feel user-friendly and easy to launch.

The set I tested all had stiff shafts and these provided surprisingly strong ball flights (I wasn’t expecting quite as much control over the flight as I got). However, the total distance from the driver - something I noticed on the course and was confirmed to me during my launch monitor testing - was around 20 yards shorter than with my own, fitted TaylorMade Stealth Plus driver . Of course, the whole of the Wilson X31 set costs less than that TaylorMade driver so it is perhaps an unfair comparison. Undoubtedly one of the reasons for the drop off in distance is the shaft length. At an inch shorter than standard, this cost me some distance but I’d expect to get more control as a result. 

The putter in the Wilson X31 set has a simple heel and toe shape. I actually putted well with it and, like the irons, it has a solid feel. If I was buying this for myself, I’d be tempted to replace the grip with more of a specialist putter grip. One small issue for me was that it doesn't come with a headcover. I'd be concerned about the effects on the paint finish without one so, again, I'd probably look to buy a headcover.

The final thing to mention is the bag. As with the rest of the set, it has a smart, simple design with one main side pocket for extra clothing, a pocket for balls, one for gloves and a valuables pocket. There is a seven-way top divider that helps order your clubs in the bag too. 

The bag is a good size, not too big to carry and not too small to sit securely on top of a trolley. It is not as sturdy as some of the best stand bags you’ll find and I would have liked an extra pocket for things like tees, ball markers and sharpies.  

All in all, you get a lot or your money from the Wilson X31 package set. The friendly looks and easy to hit performance make this a contender among the best golf club sets for beginners category. I was particularly impressed with the performance of the irons and whilst the rest of the set lacked the same star quality, this is a good, cost-effective option for those looking to invest in all the key golf equipment areas in one go.

Wilson X31 Package Set Review: A great place to start for golf beginners

Featuring ten clubs and a versatile stand bag, the X31 package set from Wilson is an ideal choice for beginner golfers looking to make a start in the game.

For those wanting to get started in golf, a package set is often the smartest and cheapest way to get yourself out on the course as quickly as possible. 

Featuring everything you need from putter to driver, The X31 set is another fantastic package set from Wilson that provides beginners with an easy and affordable option to begin their journey in the game of golf. 

The set features ten clubs, including a driver, 3-wood, hybrid, irons from (6-SW) and a putter.

To see how the entire set performed, we took it down to the range and then out on the course to test out its performance.

Let's get into it.

Wilson X31 Driver

Set at 10.5 degrees and measuring an inch shorter than standard drivers, the X31 driver gives a confidence-inspiring look at address thanks to the ability to see the loft on the face.

In the looks department, the grey and orange colour scheme provides a nice level of contrast with the orange alignment marker on the crown, proving a handy tool to square your ball with the face of the club.  

The sole of the club is kept relatively simple, and while it doesn't feature the premium finishing details we've seen from some of the best drivers of the year, coming at a fraction of the price, it was to be expected. 

In terms of performance, the driver was very easy to hit and provided a solid feel at impact, but one that we would categorise as slightly tinny. Shorter than most of the premium drivers on the market, this driver isn't going to break any long-drive world records anytime soon, but it does provide ample forgiveness that will suit the level of golfer it's aimed at. 

Wilson X31 Woods and Hybrids

Featuring the same orange and grey colour scheme as the driver, the woods and hybrids were both very easy hit and can be utilised as useful weapons on long par-3s and approaches into demanding par-5s. 

We found both clubs easy to launch, and they produced a pleasingly high ball flight that gave us the confidence we would be able to get the ball airborne with ease, even from tough lies or thick rough. 

Similarly to the driver, the wood and hybrid have quite a tinny feel at impact, and while this isn't our favourite striking sensation, it was only a tiny negative from what overall was a very pleasing performance, considering the price point of these clubs. 

Wilson X31 Irons

The irons packed a real punch while also producing a very stable and strong feeling at contact. We were really impressed with their overall performance, and the carry distance we achieved matched up to what we would expect from our more premium gamers. 

The relatively thick topline and additional offset provide a very welcome sight at address, and while certainly thicker than a more players-focused iron, the profile of these clubs isn't so chunky as to be off putting. 

While the irons feature the same black, orange and grey colour scheme as the longer clubs in the bag, they manage to look more premium both in hand and in the bag. 

Wilson X31 Putter

The Wilson X31 putter has a simple toe and heel-weighted blade design, and despite producing a slightly clicky sound at impact, it had a very solid feel when struck from the centre. 

We were putting on particularly slow greens due to the substantial amount of rain we've had recently in the UK, but despite that, we still managed to hold our distance control and accuracy nicely with the putter. 

If we were to use this putter regularly, we would replace the grip with something a bit more premium, as the stock grip does feel a bit flimsy. 

Wilson X31 Bag

Featuring a seven-way divider, large apparel pocket, valuables and ball pocket, the Wilson X31 bag is simple and effective, providing everything you may require from a starter bag. 

The lightweight construction was easy to carry, and the black, grey and orange colour scheme that was consistent throughout the clubs was also used for the bag as well, tying the whole package set together nicely. 

While the bag isn't quite as sturdy and durable as some of the best stand bags on the market, it is undoubtedly good enough to get any beginner going.

Should you buy the Wilson X31 package set? 

If you want to start playing golf and want a quick and cost-effective way to kick-start your journey, then the Wilson X31 set would be a great place to start. 

While the whole selection of clubs performed well, we were really impressed with the irons, and they will prove to be an excellent set of tools for any aspiring golfer.

Wilson Matrix Golf Club Set Review

These days, Wilson focuses a lot more on making golf club sets than it does on making tour-caliber specialty clubs like they used to.

But one man’s loss is another man’s gain. While Wilson may not be the go-to brand for scratch golfers anymore, beginners and high handicappers have a lot to gain from using their clubs.

Particularly their complete sets. Wilson complete golf club sets are known for being forgiving and focusing on the needs of beginners and high handicappers. The only problem is that Wilson makes a lot of these types of packaged sets.

So it’s hard to believe that every single one of them is worthwhile. But my goal is to help you separate the chaff from the wheat. To that end, I have tested and reviewed the Wilson Matrix golf club set. Is it worth your time and money? Read on to find out.

Wilson Matrix First Impressions

“The first thing that struck me about the Wilson Matrix golf clubs as I unboxed them was their size.”

I have tested a handful of Wilson package sets in the past and almost all of them feature oversized clubs. With the Wilson Matrix set, I felt like the profiles of the clubs were a bit more moderate – especially the fairway and the hybrid. That’s not to say that these clubs are tiny; but they are not quite as oversized as some other Wilson offerings.

Who is the Wilson Matrix Golf Club Set Best for?

“Wilson has come out publicly and stated that the Wilson Matrix set is designed for beginner golfers.”

The set is bereft of fancy features and confusing technology. Instead, the designs are basic and typical of GI clubs. For instance, the irons have a cavity back design which is proven to increase forgiveness. Even the price of this set is congenial to beginners.

What Comes in the Set?

“The Wilson Matrix golf club set includes a 460cc titanium composite driver.”

The driver is 10.5° and includes a reinforced graphite shaft. The titanium construction keeps weight down. I felt like the Wilson Matrix driver was actually increasing my club head speed and the launch  monitor data confirmed that feeling.

It produces a mid-high launch and has an expansive sweet spot. It gives off a crisp, metallic crack at impact. I found myself falling into a groove with this driver after just a few swings.

“The 3 wood has a surprisingly compact profile.”

It still looks pretty chunky behind the ball but it also looks sleek and nimble at the same time. I felt like I had really good control over the club head even when I swung outside of my shoes. This may have been thanks to the reinforced tip of the graphite shaft.

In any case, flight was exceptionally stable and I was even able to work the ball a little bit from left-to-right.

“The Wilson Matrix set includes a #4 hybrid.”

The hybrid has a traditional, squat profile which increases forgiveness from heel to toe. It’s not a great rescue club since the turf interaction is a bit rough and it struggles to mow down the taller grass. But it launches high and is very easy to hit.

“The Wilson Matrix set includes irons 5-SW.”

The irons have an oversized profile and are cast from 431 stainless steel. Even as cast irons, I liked their feel. When I mis-hit, I wasn’t seeing a huge increase in spin rates and the head seemed to resist twisting very well.

It kept my errant strikes stable so I had a lot of leeway. The soles are pretty wide which gives these irons a chunky look at address. The offset is also prominent. The cavity back design pushes mass to the perimeter to produce excellent forgiveness.

I really liked these irons and I think beginners and high handicappers are going to get along very well with them.

“The putter has a simple, 3-line alignment aid.”

This is an Anser-style putter and it’s pretty basic overall. It’s a little lighter than I like my putter to be but it may yet feel nice to beginners and high handicappers.

Set Composition

The woods in this set all come with reinforced graphite shafts while the irons and the putter have steel shafts. The irons are cast from 431 stainless steel which should make them very durable.

The driver looks very forgiving at address. It looms large behind the ball to give you the sense that you can’t miss the sweet spot. The irons are stainless steel cavity backs with deep undercuts so they launch effortlessly high.

The irons are perimeter weighted and produce very high launch thanks to the low CG and wide soles. The woods are oversized and are very easy to hit.

Final Assessment

“The Wilson Matrix is a solid golf club set with very few weaknesses.”

For a beginner that is. The fairway wood and the irons were especially impressive. Like a lot of Wilson golf club sets, the Wilson Matrix putter was underwhelming. But that is the only weakness in an otherwise solid set. The Wilson Matrix set is definitely worth your while if you are a beginner or 25+ handicapper.
