Although this was an interesting tour with a very knowledgable guide, it should be labeled more as a history tour with some food stops instead of being called a food tour. We went hungry and ended up hangry by the time we reached our second food stop. Stop #1 was an hour into the tour and a very small portion of shepherd's pie - which we were told to "pretend" was the German version because there are no more German restaurants in town. Another hour later we get a full sized Cuban sandwich with a side of beans and rice. Maybe 15-30 minutes later, it's a veggie calzone. None of the three restauranst for these offerings has any special history connected to the city even though there were some mentioned. The final stop for cafe con leche was at a nice family owned cigar shop. I'd recommend to the organizers that the pacing be changed to a better mix of food first and history later or less history and more about the food if you're going to call this a food tour.

Had a great time on this tour. Cindy was very nice and full of so much interesting history about the Ybor area. Food was delicious. Go hungry because you do get a good amount of food.

I have been on many food tours over the years. The food was good but portions were small. The restaurants appeared unaware of the Group coming so we ended up waiting several times which, eventually, put us behind an hour. The tour guide, Cindy, was very knowledgeable and full of stories and the history of the town-maybe a little too much at times when u r hungry. Not very personable but good. The Chamber of Commerce speaker was very passionate. I would still recommend it because it was a good history lesson.

This was a great walking tour that gives you quite an insight to the history of Ybor City. Our guide, Cindy, was very knowledgeable. The classification of this as a Food Tour, however, is misleading. It is really a historical walking tour that stops at a few restaurants. The food at the stops were nothing special like you would typically get on a food tour. Although the cuban sandwich was very good, it was something very typical for the restaurants in the area. I give it a 5 for a historical walking tour and a 3 for a food tour. They should also let you know that one of the stops you are only served coffee and it is in a cigar bar that is very smokey so that folks that are smoke sensitive are warned.

It was a very interesting tour. The tour guide was very knowledgeable about the history of Ybor City.

Our guide, Cindy, did a great job herding the ten of us in the group. She had a wealth of knowledge about Ybar City. The tour was supposed to be focused around food tasting from various countries involved in the cultural make up of the area. Unfortunately, the tour fell short in this department. The first food was supposed to be German, but consisted of a "Beer Burger" with chips. It wasn't close to resembling German food. The second stop was Cuban and they served a rather good Cuban sandwich. The third stop was an Italian Pizza place and they served two meatballs that were strongly flavored with garlic. The final stop was supposed to be a coffee place where real Cuban coffee was available to taste. It was a paper cup of rather weak coffee; totally unlike real Cuban coffee that we had before the tour began. Another item that was not mentioned was having the tour members paying for their drinks. Water was provided by the establishment, but offering tea or soft drinks would have really helped. Though Cindy did a great job, the food was a let down for me personally.

Did the Historic Ybor City Food Tour. We've done a lot of food tours in other cities and I would rate this one toward the bottom in terms of actual food. The tour was heavy on the history and then selected a handful of food items based on this history (German, Italian, Spanish, etc.). It could just be a difference of preference but I would far prefer a food tour that is focused on GREAT food (even if unrelated to the history portion) with some history, rather than mediocre food that fits the story of the tour. This is the first food tour I left and felt like the price ($80pp) was an unfair trade for the quantity and quality of food. We had shepherd's pie, meatballs, rice and beans, a portion of a Cuban, and a coffee. Enjoyed the history and knowledgeable tour guide.

Check Groupon for a deal! This is a well organized tour. Raymond, our guide, was full of knowledge and kept us moving along the route. We stopped for food at: Tampa Bay Brewery (wings), Pizza Place for a cheese slice, a restaurant for 1/2 a Cuban sandwich, a restaurant for black beans and rice, cigar shop for a guava empanada and cafe con leche. The tour took 3 hours. We met at Ybor Centre and started on time. There is about a mile of walking. You learn about the cigar industry and social life of the locals back in the late 1800's and early 1900's. It was an interesting tour and paired with good food. I definitely recommend it.

My husband and some friends did this food tour on a Sunday afternoon. Our guide was Ashley who was extremely knowledgeable about the history of Ybor. The restaurants that we visited were well known within the Tampa and Ybor communities, yet we were still able to try something that I havent tried before. The tour was very informative as we learned not only about the history of Ybor but we also learned about the history of the buildings and the culture of Ybor. I highly recommend this tour for not only visitors of Tampa but residents as well.

Excellent tour and I have done several in several cities. Tour guide was knowledgeable. The food was excellent and plentiful. Highly recommend.

Enjoyable walk through historic Ybor City with 4 stops for foods that represent the 4 cultures that make up Ybor City: Spanish, Cuban, Italian, and German. Cindy covered the history of the founder, various buildings, the culture at the end of the 1800s when Ybor City was in its heyday. Walk was at a leisurely pace and the good was excellent. Would recommend to friends to check out.

Christie was a great guide. We learned lots of history and the food was plentiful and delicious. If 3 hours walking sounds like a lot to you it's not. You're sitting in the restaurants also so plenty of rest time.

The tour was amazing and so was all the food we had! Kristie was our guide and she did an excellent job. Even though we have lived in the Tampa area for over 20 years we learned so much we never knew about Ybor and the history. I would not hesitate to do the tour again when we have visitors.

Zac was excellent! The food was also phenomenal with the exception of the “German” food. It’s understandable since the German culture is very small, but maybe think about another place!!

Pronounced ee -bore, this northeast enclave of Tampa was once a hotbed for hand-rolled cigars – at the turn of the 20th century factory workers rolled millions of cigars annually, making Tampa the "Cigar Capital of the World." Now, it's a mash of old and new; the lively bars and pubs represent the modern city; the brick streets and historic streetcar serve as a tribute to the neighborhood's past. A tour of J.C. Newman Cigar Company provides a peek into the only remaining cigar factory in Ybor City, appealing to both cigars smokers and nonsmokers.

Recent travelers were divided on when to visit: some said the nighttime entertainment is the most interesting feature of Ybor City – especially the nightlife – while others recommended stopping by during the day for delicious, authentic Cuban food (Ybor City is home to Florida's oldest restaurant, Columbia Restaurant) and an amazing selection of cigars. To learn more about the neighborhood and to see a list of upcoming events, visit the Ybor City  website .

Getting there

Whenever you decide to pay a visit to Tampa's National Historic Landmark District, you'll have several ways to get there. You can hop on the free TECO Line Streetcar, which services downtown Tampa and stops directly in Ybor City, or, if you decide to take your own set of wheels, you'll find plenty of parking on the streets, surface lots and in garages.

#1 Tampa Riverwalk

The Tampa Riverwalk is an approximately 2.5-mile-long paved scenic trail that runs along the Hillsborough River in downtown Tampa. Anchored by Armature Works to the north and the Tampa Bay History Center to the south, the Riverwalk affords easy access to the Water Street Tampa and Channel districts, and Sparkman Wharf . Recent visitors were impressed by how well-maintained and clean the trail is, and noted that it's an ideal place to stretch your legs and get some exercise.
