David Plyler ‘06 lives on the road. More specifically, he lives in a Zac Brown Band tour bus (when he’s not home in Nashville). Plyler is a representative from ROAR, the band’s management company, who travels to every show. His position requires extreme attention to detail, calm under pressure, organizational genius and unfailing resourcefulness. An alumnus of the College of Charleston business administration  and hospitality and tourism management  programs, he was ready to take on this job and it’s many, many surprises.

Q: How did you end up at your current company?

A:  I knew I wanted to work in the music industry, so a few years out of college I relocated from SOuth Carolina to Nashville. I began working as a server and bartender at a restaurant I knew was a local industry hotspot hoping to make a few connections. I also volunteered for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Musicians On Call, the Country Music Hall of Fame and the WO Smith Music School to expand my network.

I was awarded the title of Nashville’s Top 30 Under 30 business professionals. After eight months at the restaurant, I got a call from a regular customer who was starting a new publishing and management company and looking for a young go-getter to help him out. After being with this start-up company for less than a year I received a call from the third largest agency in the world and was offered a job. Everything has come together like that, between hard work and networking, since I got to Nashville.

Q: What do you do at ROAR?

A:  ROAR is a talent, music, and brand management firm based in Beverly Hills with offices in New York, Atlanta and Nashville.  I started as an executive assistant to the head of the Nashville office and then after eight months between 2012 and 2013 my boss said “we’re going to send you on the road with the Zac Brown Band.” I said “great, when do I start?” He said “tomorrow.”

I’m on the road with Zac Brown Band four-to-five days a week. I handle the ticketing for VIPs, media, radio and sponsors. Part of my job on the ROAR team is facilitating and bringing Zac’s ideas to fruition – so the Southern Ground Food and Music Festival was his brainchild, for example. Zac curates the artists and chefs for the festival, and ROAR, along with Jam Productions and Outback Concerts, produces the festivals.

At the first festival he wanted ‘stage boxes’ for VIPs, so patrons who buy these VIP tickets get a seat at a table on the main stage, and they receive an amazing meal while they watch the show. That was all Zac’s idea that we helped bring to life.

He also wanted a mobile kitchen on the road to prepare a meal and give the fans a unique, hospitable experience, so one of the 11 trucks we take on the road is a restaurant-quality kitchen named “Cookie.”

Q: What’s your favorite thing about your job?

A:  It’s great to work with such talented, creative people. I love my job everyday, but I especially love the food. People on tour with Zac don’t eat your typical tour food. We have great meals on the road.

Q: What’s next for you?

A:  I hope to continue to work on the road with the Zac Brown Band and absorb as much knowledge as possible.

Q: Who are some artists to watch?

A:  Ben Rector and Clare Bowen.

Q: How did your time at the College prepare you for your career?

A:  Being the President of Kappa Sigma made me more business savvy and taught me how to motivate and manage people.

I took an entrepreneurship class led by Tommy Baker that was entirely made up of successful local entrepreneurs. We dressed in a full suit every day and listened to these community members talk about everything they learned while building their own businesses. I also worked in the Charleston Place Hotel and that was really valuable experience.

Q: What advice would you give current students?

A:  Use this time to build relationships – get internships, set up informational interviews, meet with your professors, attend networking events. And don’t underestimate the power of a handwritten note, it lets someone know you were paying attention and shows that you care enough to follow up. That goes a long way.

Today, multi-platinum, GRAMMY Award-winning Zac Brown Band announced their upcoming 2023 “From the FireTour.”

The new set of dates, produced by Live Nation, arrives on the heels of 2022’s “Out in the Middle Tour” and the release of “The Comeback (Deluxe)” album, which features re-recorded tracks with some of music’s biggest stars, including Blake Shelton, James Taylor, Jimmy Buffett, Cody Johnson, Marcus King, Jamey Johnson, and Ingrid Andress. The “Out in the Middle Tour” saw the band perform at Wrigley Field, Hollywood Bowl, Truist Park, and the famed Fenway Park, where they hold the record for most consecutive sold out shows with 13.   Just ahead of their own record-breaking sell-out, Zac Brown Band was inducted into the Fenway Music Hall of Fame, joining only Paul McCartney and Billy Joel. 

The “From the Fire Tour,” which marks the band’s 10 th  North American tour, will kick off in Columbus, Ohio on June 30 th  and continue through November. The tour will showcase Zac Brown Band’s one-of-a-kind, southern rock style, serving as an ode to fans and those that have lent a helping hand to pull this country out from the fire of these past few years and helped us all get back on our feet and unify as one. The band will perform over 30 shows, including a return to Fenway Park as well as performances at Northwell Health at Jones Beach Theater, Hersheypark Stadium, Budweiser Stage, and Saratoga Performing Arts Center. The band will be joined by an incredible group of opening acts on select dates throughout the tour, including Marcus King, Tenille Townes, and King Calaway.

“This past year was monumental, and we’re thrilled to bring all that momentum with us into 2023 and onto the ‘From the Fire Tour,’” said Brown. “We are all like family in this band and having the opportunity to bring our music from city to city is something we never take for granted. We can’t wait to be back out on the road with our fans.”

Just ahead of the “From the Fire Tour,” the band will make their highly-anticipated return to the international stage, with headlining performances at both C2C: Country to Country in the United Kingdom and CMC Rocks in Australia in March. Additionally, in conjunction with MLB’s Lou Gherig Day celebrated across the league in June, Zac Brown Band will perform a Cincinatti Reds Post-Game Benefit Concert, where a portion of proceeds from every ticket sold will benefit founding band member John Driskell Hopkins’ Hop On A Cure Foundation, dedicated to finding a cure for ALS.

Zac Brown Band Announce Dates for Headlining ‘Comeback Tour’

Zac Brown Band have announced cities and dates for their headlining 2021 Comeback Tour after more than a year off the road due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The trek kicks off August 5th in Holmdel, New Jersey.

With 22 dates currently on the books, the Comeback Tour will stick mostly to the eastern half of the United States throughout its three-month run. Included on the itinerary are stops at Boston’s Fenway Park, Cincinnati’s Riverbend Music Center, and Charlotte’s PNC Music Pavilion. The jam-friendly octet will also play back-to-back nights at Jones Beach Theater in Wantagh, New York, on September 2nd and 3rd, and another two-night run at Fiddler’s Green Amphitheatre in Denver on September 17th and 18th. The tour concludes with an October 17th stop at Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena.

“We couldn’t be more excited to get back out on the road and share our new music with our fans,” Zac Brown said in a release. “It’s been a long, difficult year for everyone and we’re fired up to be reuniting with our crew, get back on tour, and celebrate a brand new world.”

Tickets go on sale Friday, May 14th, at 12 p.m. local time. Support acts on select shows include Teddy Swims, Ashland Craft, Devin Dawson, Adam Doleac, and Gabby Barrett.

Zac Brown says his band is coming to the Sphere

Buzz around the music scene is, Zac Brown Band is prepping for a residency at the Sphere.

The person providing the buzz is Zac Brown.

“It’s the greatest canvas ever created, and to be one of the first bands to go in there and do it — this is our masterpiece,” Brown said during an appearance on Theo Von’s podcast , which posted Tuesday. “This is our chance to show what we can really do, as a band.”

Von cut in as he watched video of the Sphere’s lobby display, “Look a that, Dude. That’s crazy, Bro. You guys are going to be in there? What if God comes in and picks it up and takes it home, Dude? Then you win.”

“That’s great,” Brown answered. “I’ll fly away, Bro.”

“We’ll miss ya,” Von said, “and congrats.” Von is headlining Resorts World Theatre on July 5-6, BTW.

A Sphere official said of highly entertaining, yet highly unexpected, back-and-forth, “We do not comment on any artists performing at Sphere except for those who have been announced.”

There are no dates announced or any other details readily available about the Brown experience. the band has not been held up as a probable Sphere headliner since U2 opened the venue in September, followed by Phish’s four shows last month, with Dead and Company coming in for a 24-show series beginning May 16.

Brown said he’d seen U2 and Phish perform, and had also taken in Darren Aronofsky’s “Postcard From Earth” movie. Brown was blown away by Phish’s series, four shows where no songs or content were repeated. He was impressed by U2, too.

“I got some glimpses of what was possible with the building when U2 was there, because they played the same show pretty much every night,” Brown said. “… I’ve got a team put together for this thing, and it’s going to be the biggest spectacle we’ve ever done. I’m very excited. This puts us in another league.

“The goal is for our band to keep going, man, and be like the Rolling Stones , the Grateful Dead and Jimmy Buffett, to be in with those legacy acts.”

Scooter Braun’s name has been making headlines over the past week, as a number of his superstar clients have parted ways with his  management  company, SB Projects.

Sources close to the situation told  Billboard  on Tuesday (Aug. 22) that  Idina Menzel  parted with the manager amicably earlier this year.  Demi Lovato  and  Ariana Grande  also left their deals with SB Projects this year. It is unclear whether Grande is severing all business ties with Braun outside of management. Lovato, meanwhile, does not yet have new management, though conversations are reportedly taking place. J Balvin , who signed with Braun back in 2019, exited his deal in May and is now managed by Roc Nation.

The manager poked fun at the situation Tuesday by sending out a tweet that read, “Breaking news… I’m no longer managing myself.”

In 2021, Braun sold SB Projects’ parent company Ithaca Holdings to South Korean entertainment company HYBE, which continues to operate SB Projects. Braun has now taken on the role of HYBE America CEO.

So with some of his major clients off the roster, who is still managed by Scooter Braun? We’ve compiled a list of the manager’s clients below, including when they signed with him.

Justin Bieber

Braun discovered the superstar on YouTube and signed him in 2008, when Bieber was just 13 years old. Despite a report on Friday (Aug. 18) noting that Bieber was looking to leave the company, reps for both parties told  Billboard  that the “rumors” were “not true.”

The Kid LAROI

The Australian star initially partnered with Braun in June 2021 before leaving SB Projects in September of that year to join Adam Leber’s Rebel Management roster. The Kid LAROI then  split with Leber’s team  earlier in May when Leber resigned amicably. He rejoined Braun’s team in May 2022 .

In March 2021, Quavo signed with Braun, who co-manages the “Workin Me” star alongside the Migos’ manager, Danny Zook, sources told  Billboard at the time.  

Lil Dicky took to Instagram back in 2016 to announce that he was signing with SB Projects. “Shout out @scooterbraun for believing in me – I’m bout to work him like a dog,” he wrote.

Black Eyed Peas

Braun added Black Eyed Peas to his roster in 2015 , handling management for the group but not individual members Fergie and will.i.am.

Ava Max signed with SB Projects in early 2023. Max was previously managed by Full Stop Management’s Jeffrey Azoff and Tommy Bruce.

The Latin superstar is one of Braun’s most recent signees, as he signed with SB Projects in June 2023. The management deal is a partnership with Edgar Andino, founder and CEO of Andino Marketing Group. 

Kelly is one of Braun’s longest-term clients, having signed with SB Projects back in 2013.

Zac Brown Band

The country stars signed a co-management deal between SB Projects and ZBB’s own Southern Ground in 2018.

YG has been signed to SB Projects as far back as 2020.

Andrew Watt

While his exact signing date isn’t clear, the producer and songwriter has worked with Braun stemming back to at least 2017.
