25 Years Ago: How Aerosmith Endured Multiple Hells to Make ‘Pink’

Aerosmith 's four-year slog between  Get a Grip and  Nine Lives  was rife with personal and professional turmoil. These struggles were rewarded, however, when the band earned their second consecutive No. 1 album and fourth Grammy win thanks to "Pink," which was released as a single on Nov. 18, 1997.

Sessions for Aerosmith's 12th album began in Miami with  Steven Tyler , Joe Perry , producer Glen Ballard (hot off the success of Alanis Morissette 's 1995 blockbuster  Jagged Little Pill ), and co-writers Mark Hudson, Desmond Child and Richie Supa. Unfortunately, the process was fraught from the start.

Joey Kramer bowed out of early rehearsals to seek treatment for depression, temporarily ceding to Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers drummer Steve Ferrone . The band warred against overreaching and fear-mongering manager Tim Collins, whom they ultimately fired in 1996. Aerosmith then flew representatives from their new label Sony down to Miami to hear the first draft of the album, only to see the execs reject it outright and sack Ballard.

Tyler, in particular, was incensed when Sony demanded re-recordings. Thankfully, the songs were already in good shape, and Miami had proven fertile ground for inspiration. The fun-in-the-sun atmosphere and endless stream of gorgeous, scantily clad women influenced the jangly, harmonica-driven "Pink," a not-so-subtle ode to the female anatomy.

"I wrote 'Pink' with Richie Supa at the Marlin Hotel down in South Beach, Fla.," Tyler recalled in his 2011 memoir  Does the Noise in My Head Bother You?  "I'd be writing and go, 'Fuck.' I'd turn the lights on when the sun went down. I turned the lights off when the sun came blasting through that big bay window. I loved writing lyrics at night — it was more mysterious than in the day, and I could evoke my demons when no one was around to bother me."

Watch Aerosmith's NSFW Video for 'Pink'

It would be a stretch to say "Pink" is riddled with sexual innuendo: There's not much subtext to lines like " Pink on the lips of your lover " and " I want to be your lover / I want to wrap you in rubber. " The song started innocently enough, though, as Tyler was riffing on the word "kink." "More often than not I would write and sing a scat where there weren't lyrics yet ... and fill up what the scat sounded like with lyrics," he said. "I threw in that line 'It's kink' because Richie Supa thought I should call the song 'Kink.' I said, 'Richie, we can't call the song "Kink." My life is kink. I am kink!'"

Tyler's scatting eventually materialized into the chorus for "Pink," and he knew he'd struck gold.  "Veni, vidi, vici. We came, we saw, we needed a Kleenex! Get the fuck out of Dodge!" he wrote. "Songs are stories; didn't all troubadour stories turn into songs, and didn't all the tales lead to the same thing? Saving the queen? Getting the girl? Wrapping her in rubber?"

Listeners were receptive to Tyler's troubadour song, as "Pink" topped Billboard's Mainstream Rock chart and reached No. 27 on the Hot 100. Its CGI-heavy, NSFW video won Best Rock Video at the 1998 MTV Video Music Awards, and the song earned a Grammy for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal in 1999, marking Aerosmith's fourth win. It's their most-played Nine Lives song in concert and only one of two to appear semi-regularly in set lists over the years, along with the lead single " Falling in Love (Is Hard on the Knees) ."

Like many of Aerosmith's poppy post-comeback singles, "Pink" likely doesn't rank high for fans of the band's sleazy, '70s hard-rock era. In 2011, bassist Tom Hamilton  posted a video response  to a fan who was amazed a band of five men would even write a song about such a so-called  un-masculine color. "There aren't a lot of things that men would wear that are pink," he said, "but there is one thing that all men — that most men — love to wear that's pink. So that's how that happened. That's the reason there's a whole song about it.

"As a matter of fact," Hamilton concluded, "that's what most rock 'n' roll is about."

Aerosmith Peace Out: See the setlist for the iconic band's farewell tour

After 50 years of touring, Aerosmith is saying "No More No More" to the road with their Peace Out tour.

At Aerosmith's kickoff show Sept. 2 in Philadelphia , the band proved it was in peak form for this victory lap, which plays arenas in North America through January.

Steven Tyler's yowl – as well as his scarf-adorned mic stand – is well-preserved, while his fellow Toxic Twin, Joe Perry, is still serving sizzling blues-rock with ease.

While original drummer Joey Kramer is sitting out the band's final tour, Brad Whitford and Tom Hamilton remain to add their handiwork on guitar and bass, respectively. John Douglas, Aerosmith's former drum tech, is filling Kramer's seat.

The band's two-hour, 18-song show is rife with '70s and '80s hits including "Love in an Elevator" and "Janie's Got a Gun." But no Aerosmith concert would be complete without standards "Dream On" and "Walk This Way," mainstays that are receiving one last hurrah.

Here is a look at the songs being performed on Aerosmith's Peace Out tour .

About Aerosmith

Celebrating their 50th anniversary, Rock & Roll Hall of Fame members Aerosmith have sold more than 150 million albums around the world, produced genre-defining music videos such as “Amazing,” “Crazy,” “Janie’s Got A Gun,” “Livin’ On The Edge,” and “Love In An Elevator,” and launched extravagant record-shattering global tours, most recently with their smash hit Las Vegas residency. The band has broken numerous boundaries, including becoming the first rock band with a massive commercially successful hip-hop collaboration with Run DMC on “Walk This Way” and the first hard rock band to appear during a Super Bowl Halftime Show with their 2001 performance, and in 1999, Aerosmith became the first band to have their own themed attraction at Disney World in Florida and later Paris with the launch of the Rock ‘N’ Roller coaster starring Aerosmith. About The Black Crowes

The Black Crowes are leaving the bullshit in the past. 15 years after their last album of original music, the Robinson Brothers present Happiness Bastards – their 10th studio album. Some may say the project has been several tumultuous years in the making, but we argue it’s arriving at just the right time. Call it brotherly love or music destiny that brought them back together, the highly anticipated record consecrating the reunion of this legendary band just may be the thing that saves rock & roll. In a time where the art form is buried beneath the corporate sheen of its successors, The Black Crowes are biting back with the angst of words left unsaid penned on paper and electrified by guitar strings, revealing stripped, bare-boned rock & roll. No gloss, no glitter, just rhythm and blues at its very best – gritty, loud, and in your face. Since The Black Crowes reunited in 2019, they’ve made a triumphant return to form with over 150 shows spanning 20 countries worldwide, celebrating the 30th anniversary of Shake Your Money Maker , the album that put them on the map. The Robinson Brothers and longtime bassist Sven Pipien headed to the studio with producer Jay Joyce in early 2023 and the experiences of years past transcribed themself through the music as the band found their way back to their roots. And it’s finally here – Happiness Bastards is out now.

Aerosmith Announce Rescheduled Dates for Peace Out Farewell Tour

  • By Andy Greene

Andy Greene

Aerosmith have announced rescheduled dates for their Peace Out farewell tour, which was suspended in September 2023 because Steven Tyler fractured his larynx. This new leg kicks off Sept. 20 in Pittsburgh and wraps up Feb. 26 in Buffalo, New York. They’ll once again be joined by the Black Crowes.

The band announced plans to wrap their career with one final tour in May 2023, but they played a mere three shows before Tyler severely hurt his larynx. “I am heartbroken to not be out there with Aerosmith, my brothers, and the incredible Black Crowes, rocking with the best fans in the world,” he wrote in a message to fans. “I promise we will be back as soon as we can!”

Update: Aerosmith postponed their current tour due to Steven Tyler suffering a vocal chord injury that's turned out to be a bit more serious than originally thought. Original dates were supposed to be rescheduled for January/February, but that hasn't happened. We'll keep an eye on the situation, but you can also check in on StubHub and Vivid Seats for the latest details on rearranged dates, too.

Original article follows:

Aerosmith are embarking on their 2023-2024 Peace Out: Farewell Tour. The world-famous rock band formed in 1970 is on their final tour as they celebrate over 50 years of music and legendary songs. While the tour has already begun, we can show you how to buy Aerosmith tickets for all the remaining shows.

Following ten world tours and numerous number one hits throughout their 53-year career, Aerosmith are taking their final bow as they travel across North America for the group's bittersweet goodbye. The Peace Out: Farewell Tour kicked off on September 2 in Philadelphia, with the concert series set to include 40 shows. However, Aerosmith announced on September 11 that six shows would be postponed due to lead singer Steven Tyler's vocal cords being injured.

Aerosmith band members on the Farewell Tour include lead vocalist Steven Tyler, guitarist and backing vocalist Joe Perry, bass player Tom Hamilton, guitar player Brad Whitford, keyboardist Buck Johnson, and drummer John Douglas. So far, the tour's setlist has included the band's classic hits such as "Sweet Emotion," "I Don't Want to Miss a Thing," and "Dream On."

If you're looking to buy Aerosmith's Peace Out: Farewell Tour tickets, we've got you covered. Here's our breakdown of Aerosmith's remaining tour schedule throughout 2023 and 2024, purchasing details, and resale and original ticket prices. Or you can browse through the available tickets left through StubHub and Vivid Seats at your leisure.

Aerosmith 2023/2024 tour schedule

Aerosmith's Peace Out: Farewell Tour has 37 concert dates remaining across 2023 and 2024. The band will head to a new city for each performance across North America. So far, only six concerts have been postponed to 2024 due to Tyler's injury: Detroit, Chicago, Washington DC, Toronto, Raleigh, and Cleveland. We have all the rescheduled dates at the end of the table below for you.

While the Farewell Tour will include two stops in Canada, all other shows will be held in the United States. All concert times are listed in local time zones.

How to buy tickets for Aerosmith's 2023 concert tour

You can purchase original tickets to Aerosmith's 2023 Peace Out: Farewell Tour through Ticketmaster , although only a select number still remain for each show. Also, tickets still available on Ticketmaster are typically more expensive than those that can be found on verified resale platforms such as StubHub and Vivid Seats.

On the lower end, standard tickets to Aerosmith's 2023 tour on StubHub begin at approximately $61 to $239, depending on the date and venue. Meanwhile, the cheaper tickets available on Vivid Seats range from about $57 to $223, similarly varying by concert venue and date. When accounting for VIP packages, the cost increases significantly on each purchasing platform.

How much are Aerosmith tickets?

The prices for original Aerosmith concert tickets have risen since first becoming available on Ticketmaster . Additionally, the cost of an original ticket varies depending on the demand for a particular location and date.

For instance, among the cheapest prices on Ticketmaster for a standard original ticket to the 2023 Peace Out: Farewell Tour is $54.95 for Aerosmith's Raleigh, North Carolina show on February 26. Meanwhile, the cheapest original standard ticket price for their Boston show on New Year's Eve costs $551.95 due to location, date, and demand. However, the number of standard original tickets remaining for the concerts is dwindling, so you may have better luck with verified resales.

There are also three VIP packages for Aerosmith's 2023 Peace Out: Farewell Tour at varying prices. The packages include the Aerosmith THX Certified PIT VIP Experience,  Aerosmith Gold Seat VIP Package, and Steven Tyler and Joe Perry VIP Meet & Greet Upgrade. At Aerosmith's San Jose concert, the Gold Seat package costs $595.95, while the Gold Star package at Newark costs between $599.95 and $649.95. Here's a breakdown of the various Aerosmith VIP packages from Ticketmaster's website .

Original prices typically come in much higher than resale prices for Aerosmith concerts. Many of the cheaper tickets are verified resales for concert dates further away, suggesting you might find the best prices by purchasing sooner rather than later.

Who is opening for Aerosmith's tour?

The opening act for Aerosmith for each concert on the 2023-2024 Peace Out: Farewell Tour will be performed by The Black Crowes. The band's biggest hits include songs like "She Talks to Angels," "Remedy," and "Kickin' My Heart Around."

Will there be international tour dates?

At the time of writing, it seems Aerosmith will not be embarking on an international leg for their Peace Out: Farewell Tour. Instead, the tour appears to be exclusively set in North America, with the only two international dates being in Montreal and Toronto, Canada.

In December 2003, Aerosmith was double-billed alongside KISS at Thompson-Boling Arena. Coincidentally, KISS recently announced its own "End of the Road Tour," which is scheduled to stop in Knoxville Nov. 24.

Aerosmith reschedules Peace Out farewell tour: Dates for 3 Florida shows, how to get tickets

aerosmith pink tour

Florida Aerosmith fans will wait just a bit longer to finally say peace out  to the iconic rock band.

The rockers, who postponed their Peace Out farewell tour  after only a few shows in September, will return for a 40-date run starting Sept. 20 of this year.

Three Florida shows are included in this new schedule, all seeing dates in the early half of 2025. As with the original dates,  The Black Crowes  will open for Aerosmith.

When are the new Florida dates for Aerosmith's 'Peace Out' farewell tour? They also added an extra city

The new dates for the Florida shows are:

  • Friday, Feb. 14 - Tampa, Amelie Arena
  • Monday, Feb. 17 - Sunrise, Amerant Bank Arena

In addition to rescheduling the tour, the band added three cities: Pittsburgh, Orlando and Philadelphia, where their tour kicked off last September.

The Orlando date is Tuesday, Feb. 11 at the Kia Arena, recently renamed from the Amway Center.

Why did Aerosmith have to postpone 2023 tour dates? What happened to Steven Tyler?

On Sept. 12, Tyler initially  announced  that he had a severe vocal injury that occurred during Aerosmith's Saturday show in Long Island, New York.

“I’m heartbroken to say I have received strict doctor’s orders not to sing for the next thirty days,” Tyler, 75, said in a  statement  released by the band on Monday. “I sustained vocal cord damage during Saturday’s show that led to subsequent bleeding. We’ll need to postpone a few dates so that we can come back and give you the performance you deserve.

However, the band shared in a statement two weeks later that said “Unfortunately, Steven’s vocal injury is more serious than initially thought. His doctor has confirmed that in addition to the damage to his vocal cords, he fractured his larynx which requires ongoing care.”

They shared the rock icon was receiving the best medical treatment available to ensure his recovery is swift, but "given the nature of a fracture, he is being told patience is essential.”

I bought tickets to Aerosmith's 2023 shows. Will my tickets be honored?

All previously purchased tickets will be honored for the new dates, while tickets for the new shows will go on sale at 10 a.m. local time April 12 via  ticketmaster.com .

For those who previously purchased tickets and cannot attend the rescheduled concerts, refunds will be available at point of purchase. A series of VIP packages are also available at  aerosmith.com/VIP.

What songs can fans expect to hear at Aerosmith’s farewell shows?

USA TODAY attended the opening show in Philadelphia last year. While there could be changes to the set list, here's what it looked like prior to the postponement:

  • "Back in the Saddle"
  • "Love in an Elevator"
  • "Janie's Got a Gun"
  • "Adam's Apple"
  • "Livin' on the Edge"
  • "No More No More"
  • "Hangman Jury"
  • "Seasons of Wither"
  • "Movin' Out"
  • "Stop Messin' Around"
  • "Rats in the Cellar"
  • "I Don't Want to Miss a Thing"
  • "Sweet Emotion"
  • "Toys in the Attic"
  • "Walk This Way"

Are all original Aerosmith members on tour?

Original drummer  Joey Kramer  will be sitting out the band's final tour. John Douglas, Aerosmith's former drum tech, is filling Kramer's seat.

“While Joey Kramer remains a beloved founding member of Aerosmith, he has regrettably made the decision to sit out the currently scheduled touring dates to focus his full attention on his family and health. Joey’s unmistakable and legendary presence behind the drum kit will be sorely missed,” the band said in a statement.

However, fans can look forward to Tyler's yowl and his fellow Toxic Twin, Joe Perry, on the guitar. Brad Whitford and Tom Hamilton remain on guitar and bass.
