Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ICAO: KORD, IATA: ORD, FAA LID: ORD)

Chicago O’Hare International Airport is located on the Northwest side of Chicago, Illinois which is 23 km northwest of the Loop business district. The airport is commonly known as O’Hare Airport, O’Hare, or Chicago O’Hare. The Chicago Department of Aviation (CDA) handles the overall operation of O’Hare International Airport. It is among the busiest international airports in Chicago.

The airport designed to be the successor of Chicago Midway International Airport covers a total area of 7,627 acres (3,087 ha) of land. The airport operates flights to over 228 destinations across the globe including European countries, South America, North America, Africa, Asia, and Oceania.

History of O’Hare International Airport

O’Hare was a manufacturing plant for World War II aircraft ‘Douglas C-54 Skymasters’ where almost 655 C-54s planes were manufactured. The field attached with the plant was known as Douglas Airport and the manufactured planes were flown.

The Douglas Airport or airfield featured four runways each with a length of 1,700 meters. After the conclusion of the second world war, the Douglas Company’s contract expired and it chose to work only at its headquarters in Santa Monica, California. The name of the airport was changed to ‘Orchard Field Airport’ with IATA code ‘ORD’ after the departure of Douglas Company.

The Orchard Field Airport was then utilized by the United States Air Force during the Korean War due to which no commercial flights occurred at the airport. The airfield became home to US Air Force 62nd Fighter-Interceptor Squadron which operated North American F-86 Sabres from 1950 to 1959.

The airport slowly gained momentum in commercial business starting in 1960 due to which the need for a fighter base declined. With that, the US Air Force reserve fighter base was closed on 1st April 1997 under the agreement between the Department of Defense, and the O’Hare City authority.

After the termination of the fighter base, the airport went through various advancements for scheduled commercial flights. O’Hare became the first airport to use the jet bridge in 1958 and also use slip-form paving for concrete and strong runways.

The name was finalized O’Hare Airport by the city in 1949 to honor Edward ‘Butch’ O’Hare. Edward was the U.S. Navy’s first flying ace and Medal of Honor recipient in the second World War.

The O’Hare Airport initiated scheduled passenger service in 1955 with a project investment of over US$25 million . The airport started to lure airlines after the first dedicated international terminal was inaugurated in August 1958. After that, the area expanded to 7,200 acres (2,900 ha) with the introduction of new terminals, parking, an apron, aircraft hangars, and various other infrastructural facilities. 

Terminal 2 and Terminal 3 were introduced on January 1, 1962, and were designed by C.F. Murphy and Associates.

One of the biggest achievements of the airport was the first scheduled jet operation. American Boeing 707 conducted flights from New York to Chicago to San Francisco on 22nd March 1959. Midway International Airport, the airport next to O’Hare, was facing issues with limited infrastructure as it did not have a required runway to accommodate Boeing 707 and Douglas DC-8 aircraft. With that, O’Hare airport became the center of attraction for various airlines and served over 10 million passengers annually becoming the world’s busiest airport.

The airport went through various developments after the passage of US airline deregulation in the 1980s. Trans World Airlines (TWA) terminated its hub from O’Hare and shifted towards St. Louis. Northwest Airlines Corp. (NWA) also moved toward Minneapolis; however, Delta kept its hub in Chicago for some time. Delta closed its hub at Chicago Airport in the 1990s due to the expense of O’Hare Airport. 

O’Hare airport experienced delays from the late 1980s due to inefficient runway layout as only one new runway (4R/22L) was added in 1971. The three pairs of angled runways of O’Hare airport allowed takeoffs into the wind; however, they were dangerous and inefficient .

In the 1990s, the airport got the title of one of the worst-performing airports in the United States due to the increment in delayed flights. The airport went through O’Hare Modernization Plan (OMP) after CDA committed to it in 2001. The financial issues in 2008 delayed the OMP completion and the construction of the sixth and final parallel runway (9C/27C) initiated in 2016.

The parallel runway project will be completed in November 2020 and the extension of runway 9R/27L is scheduled to complete in 2021.

United Airlines and American Airlines operate their flights from the base at O’Hare International Airport today. After the initialization and completion of the first two phases of OMP, the airport saw a reduction in system delays by almost 57 percent. With that, the airport ranked 14th position for maintaining on-time performance in 2017 among the top 30 U.S. airports. The initial project cost estimation was US$6.6 billion however, it escalated beyond US$10 billion by 2019.

The name was reformed to Chicago Municipal Airport on December 12, 1927, after the Chicago city leased the airport in 1926.

The airport saw some major changes by 1928 including 12 hangars, and four runways with lighting equipment for night flight operations. Due to a major fire incident on 25th June 1930, two hangars and 27 aircraft were destroyed at the airport and the loss was estimated at over US$2 million. 

The airport went through various development projects including a new passenger terminal in 1931 . The name of the airport was changed to the Battle of Midway in July 1949.

The reconstruction project began in 1967 in which the airport encountered the addition of three new concourses with 28 gates and three ticket counters. Chicago city invested almost US$10 million in Midway Airport renovation funds.

Midway International Airport was capable of handling aircraft like Douglas DC-9, Boeing 727, Boeing 737, BAC One-Eleven however, the runway was inefficient for Boeing 707 and Douglas DC-8. Due to this limitation, the majority of airlines preferred O’Hare International Airport.

The airline has launched its first flight to Chicago, buoyed by a promising 2023 financial report and optimistic about its merger with the Lufthansa Group

ITA Airways , the flag carrier of Italy that succeeded Alitalia in 2021, has launched the inaugural flight to its newest destination in North America – Chicago O’Hare International Airport .

The inaugural flight took off from Chicago at 3:00 p.m. local time, marking the beginning of this eagerly anticipated route served by the airline’s newest Airbus A330neo aircraft.

The new service between the airline’s hub in Rome-Fiumicino Airport and O’Hare reinforces the airline’s commitment to expanding its long-haul connectivity, particularly in North America , where it plans to resume services to key destinations previously serviced by Alitalia. Among these destinations are Toronto and Chicago, which are vital markets for the airline’s international operations.

The airline’s Chief Commercial Officer, Emiliana Limosani—who spoke to Business Traveler in February to celebrate the second anniversary of Volare , the airline’s frequent flyer program—emphasized the significance of this new route, stating, “We are proud to launch the new nonstop flight between Chicago and Rome. This expansion consolidates our presence in North America and underscores our dedication to serving both leisure and business travelers, including the vibrant Italian community in the Midwest.”

A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held at O’Hare to mark the first flight. The event was attended by important figures such as Thomas Botzios (Consul General of Italy in Chicago) and Amber Ritter (Managing Deputy Commissioner and Chief Commercial Officer for the Chicago Department of Aviation).

Consul General Botzios expressed his enthusiasm, highlighting this flight’s cultural and economic significance, especially for the Italian-American community in the Midwest. “This new connection brings Italy even closer to the heart of the United States, fostering closer ties between Rome and the American Midwest,” he said.

Commissioner Jamie L. Rhee of the Chicago Department of Aviation also praised the development, acknowledging the importance of expanding air links between Chicago and global destinations. Rich Gamble, Interim President and CEO of Choose Chicago echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the role of air connectivity in sustaining Chicago’s status as a premier international destination.

The new Chicago-Rome route will initially operate six times a week during the Summer of 2024, with plans to increase daily flights by June. Furthermore, ITA Airways is set to expand its intercontinental network with additional routes to Toronto, Riyadh, Accra, Kuwait City, Dakar, and Jeddah.

ITA Airways’ growth strategy is underpinned by a commitment to showcase the best of Italian hospitality and design. The airline collaborates with prestigious Italian brands like Brunello Cucinelli for crew uniforms and Walter De Silva for aircraft interiors, ensuring passengers experience an authentically Italian journey.

Financial Turning Point

ITA Airways has recently achieved a significant milestone by no longer operating at a loss, indicating a shift towards profitability and stepping out of the shadows of Alitalia, which had operated at a loss for over a decade before closing down.

The airline attributes its new path to profitability to strategic efforts towards financial sustainability, the acquisition of new aircraft, and the rejuvenation of its fleet. With a workforce of 4,667 employees, the airline is well-positioned for further growth and expansion.

At a press conference held at the airline’s headquarters in Fiumicino, CEO Antonino Turicchi shared some insights into the airline’s financial performance. In 2023, ITA Airways transported 15 million passengers and generated €2.4 billion in revenue, with €2.1 billion coming from passenger transport and €300 million from cargo and charter operations. These figures align with earlier projections, and revenues are expected to climb to €3.4 billion in the current year.

The airline’s intercontinental flights have significantly contributed to its financial performance, generating €1 billion in revenue in 2023. This segment has also achieved a positive operating result, highlighting the airline’s ability to capitalize on long-haul routes effectively.

Lufthansa-ITA Airways Merger Update

Talking about expansion, ITA Airways is eager to capitalize on expansion opportunities, particularly in anticipation of the Jubilee Year 2025, which is projected to bring 30 million travelers by air. However, Turicci underscores the importance of joining forces with a larger group to realize its growth ambitions and fully leverage this landmark event’s potential.

Turicchi emphasized the necessity of European Union Antitrust approval for Lufthansa’s entry into the Italian carrier, citing the strategic imperative of being part of a larger conglomerate to facilitate expansion plans and capitalize on market opportunities effectively.

ITA Airways faces a significant regulatory hurdle as it navigates its proposed merger with Lufthansa. Despite the challenges, the Italian flag carrier is steadfast in its commitment to the merger, as it sees it as crucial to its long-term strategic objectives.

Turicchi emphasized the airline’s dedication to the merger plan, which has received support from the Italian government and Lufthansa. “There is no plan B; let’s move forward with Lufthansa,” said Turicchi, underlining the company’s belief in the proposed merger.

Lufthansa aims to acquire a 41 percent stake in ITA Airways from the Italian Treasury for €325 million ($352 million). However, the deal faces scrutiny from the European Commission due to antitrust concerns.

The regulatory body has raised preliminary objections, citing potential restrictions on competition and fare increases on specific routes within Italy and beyond.

In response to these concerns, ITA Airways and Lufthansa are diligently working on remedies to address regulatory challenges, with a looming deadline of April 26.

While the European Commission’s decision is anticipated by June 6, Turicchi hinted at the possibility of a delay until the end of June.

According to Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera , new reports suggest potential adjustments to the ownership structure, including a reduction of Lufthansa’s stake to 19.9 percent and an increase in the Ministry of Economy and Finance’s share to 80.1 percent. However, such alterations may limit ITA Airways’ ability to fully capitalize on the anticipated commercial and industrial synergies offered by Lufthansa.

Despite regulatory uncertainties, ITA Airways remains optimistic about the benefits of the merger, particularly in enhancing its competitiveness and expanding its global reach. The proposed partnership with Lufthansa aligns with ITA Airways’ strategic vision, positioning the airline for sustained growth and success in the dynamic aviation industry.

You already know what the Air Jordan 1 is all about. It’s a staple of sneaker culture.

The Air Jordan 1, however, wasn’t destined to be an all-time classic.

When it first debuted in 1985, there weren’t grand expectations. Instead, there were critics loudly chirping about Nike’s decision to give Michael Jordan a large sneaker deal before he played a single game and the rookie’s choice to sign with a company that, up to that point, was best known for running shoes.

Jordan quickly flipped the narrative on the court by winning Rookie of the Year, averaging 28.2 PPG, 6.5 RPG, and 5.9 APG in 1985 while donning Air Jordan 1s. MJ’s meteoric rise propelled the Air Jordan 1, resulting in nationwide demand and making the sneakers a must-have for hoop heads.

Introducing the Air Jordan 1 'Chicago'

The AJ1 "Chicago" was inspired by the high top Air Jordan 1 original colorway, first released in 1985. The shoe harkens back to a time when shoe boxes were often lost in inventory stockrooms, only to be found again years later.

Before the advent of sophisticated inventory systems, products were typically tracked with pen and paper. Human error was inevitable and frequently resulted in shoe boxes with mismatched lids.

The AJ1 Chicago is a throwback to this era, drawing inspiration from what an original 1985 Air Jordan 1 would look like if found decades later in a dusty stock room.

According to the Jordan design team, the goal of this shoe was to create a “time travel moment,” especially for a new generation of consumers. The process of buying a shoe today is very different from what it was like in the 80s. This sneaker attempts to capture that lost and found feeling, giving consumers a taste of what a box-fresh, vintage AJ1 would have looked like back in the day.

Lost & Found: A Unique Design

The Jordan Brand team responsible for developing the AJ1 Chicago obsessed every detail of the shoe’s design to bring this nostalgic story to life. Jordan designers studied multiple pairs of original AJ1s in varying states of distress to capture the nuances of the shoe’s look, described as having “light to no wear but with materials that sat for years in a box and didn’t withstand the test of time.”

The Inspiration

Ultimately, the team focused on several key design elements of the Chicago to drive forward the AJ1’s history. The image below shows the updated 2022 Chicago (top) next to an original 1985 Air Jordan 1 (bottom) to highlight the sneaker's inspiration.

A Closer Look

The 2022 Chicago colorway comes with a range of key design features influenced by the OG AJ1.

Bigger Swoosh

Ankle Collars

One of the most common signs of age on an original pair of AJ1s was a cracked and faded ankle collar. The black leather material wrapped around the ankle collars had a tendency to dry out and crack over a period of time, and often would begin to flake off with wear and handling.

The ankle collars on the new Chicago mimic this weathered appearance and give a nod to collectors who understand the amount of care necessary when handling a pair of 1985 originals.

Similar to the ankle collars, the rubber cupsole of an original AJ1 would age over time, turning into a light yellow hue. The Chicago pays homage to this look.

According to the Jordan Brand Design team, when shoes are left in a box for years and not properly maintained, they’re going to crack, yellow and pigment. The goal with the AJ1 Chicago was to hint at this subtle aging look, while adding tactility to the shoe’s sole.

Aged Leather

Leather is a natural material that requires ongoing maintenance. With years of neglect in a stockroom leather starts to dry out and leave visible signs of aging. The Chicago offers hints of dryness in the leather, most noticeably in the toe area and side panels. But the effect is merely aesthetic.

Jordan Brand designers took note of the condition in the leather from several older pairs of AJ1s. Observing how some of the oils in the leather came to the surface and created different visible effects, they recreated a rich look using premium materials that will last longer for today’s consumers.

OG Box & Lid

In a nod to the “lost and found” nature of the colorway, the updated Chicago comes with a mismatched box lid that speaks to the shoes being misplaced in back rooms and basements.

Designers added extra details both inside and outside the box that serve as a shout out to shoe promotions created once upon a time. According to the Jordan design team, every detail should be recognizable to those who grew up back in those days, while giving new sneakerheads a chance to experience what it was like.

One such example is the inclusion with every pair of a vintage receipt meant to replicate actual receipts that found their way into the hands of collectors from deadstock shoeboxes. The receipt calls up images of how sneakers used to be acquired in analog fashion before the internet age.

Retelling the Story

As a result of the many unique design choices, not every pair of updated AJ1s will look exactly the same. The subtle differences in each sneaker reinforce the throwback theme of this colorway.

Jordan designers took an approach that gave the 2022 Air Jordan 1 Chicago “an edge, a narrative and a connection.” They wanted a look and feel that came with a history tied back to something many consumers may not even be aware of. Ultimately, whether old school or new generation, Jordan Brand wants every consumer to see beauty in the story behind the shoe.

The sneaker dropped on November 19, 2022. The Chicago will be available in full family sizing.

So far so good. I missed my flight because of the Lufthansa diversion. United helped me to figure out how to get accommodations from Lufthansa for my long layover. They help me book appropriate onward flight.

Horrible crowding on the seats, headphones provided did not fit or work in the entertainment center, seriously the most uncomfortable flight I have taken in a LONG time. The people in front of me were literally 5 inches from my face the entire flight. Did they change their seats recently? I remember it being tight but wow this was a whole new level. Also I am a 5'3" small woman so I can't even imagine a larger person dealing with that for 11 hrs.

My baggage has been lost for the last 6 days! The problem originated at LAX with Lufthansa, which was a very big disappointment from LAX to Munich. The flight was delayed over an hour, the overhead bins on the window side are too small for most carryon's, the in-seat video screen were very poor as they would not respond to your touch quickly and would stop and start all over again, the earphone jacks are not like most standard ones, the seats still has wrappers and trash in pockets and on the seats. and there was no USB outlet to charge your phone or other devices. The German reputation for quality is bogus with this airline. BUT the responsibility for delivering my luggage became Air Dolomiti's as they were the last leg of the trip. The baggage area was chaos because several flights arrived at once. I took me over an hour to file a claim, the agent entered my info incorrectly, and the contact numbers for Lost and Found at the airport was never answered. I have never been called by Air Dolomiti or the baggage delivery company. I had to do all the calling. AD's live agents gave me two wrong phone numbers for the baggage company. When I finally got the right one on my third call, OF COURSE, no one answers and I still do not have any information on when my bags should arrive. VERY UNPROFESSIONAL operations by Lufthansa and Air Dolomiti. I will make sure I book any other air carriers on the rest of my flights to Italy this year.

As expected for a BA long haul flight in economy - you get what you pay for. Good leg space, in flight entertainment and food and drink provided. Staff on the return flight (overnight) we're a bit brisk and just wanted to get everyone fed and watered before turning the lights down. We're vegetarian so ordered it separately through the booking, although when we were in flight we realised there was a normal and vegetarian option anyway, and we were given vegan. This is fine, however on the return trip we were told there were no more specially ordered meals left, so be aware in case you have specific dietary requirements.

When it was finally cancelled the logistics of handing out vouchers and rebooking was extremely chaotic. The flight from Islamabad to London took 3 hours more then previously planned, I missed my connection to Chicago, and instead had to go New York, spend an extra day before arriving at my final destination. Holiday travel weather forecast: As winter storm bears down, some scramble to change plans

Chicago weather forecast shows significant amount of snow possible

CHICAGO (WLS) -- The coming storm is expected to create dangerous conditions on the roads, and havoc for airline travelers.

Many were already adjusting their flight plans Tuesday ahead of the holidays.

That storm is expected to bear down on Chicago right before Christmas.

So those who are choosing to fly are hoping they don't get stranded or stuck.

"I am so much relieved. I don't miss a Christmas. I can be home before the storm hits," said Dureti Gelgelu, who was heading to Oregon.

Some travelers landing at O'Hare Monday were happy to make it home before the storm.

Others visiting said they wasted no time re-booking their flights.

Kelly Derr is in the area on a work trip, and was originally supposed to fly back home to Tennessee Thursday afternoon.

She re-booked her return flight before she even got off the plane.

"I don't want to be stranded here in Chicago when I've got six people coming into my house for the holidays," she said.

The Kotso family from the Rockford area planned a last minute trip to Mexico.

"It could be worse, right? We could be stranded down there or stranded here. I think I'd rather be down somewhere warm." Steven Kotso said.

Airlines and transit agencies are already warning people traveling by air, rail or road to be ready for the arrival of treacherous winter conditions.

Most airlines currently have weather waivers in place.

That means you can change your flights for free, if you have flexible travel plans.

So far, there have not been any major cancellations.

The airlines predict the busiest travel day at O'Hare will be Thursday, as crowds return to pre-pandemic numbers.

The Chicago Department of Aviation said it's prepared for the storm.

"We have 500 staff members who are ready to work 24/7 and 350 pieces of snow removing equipment, lots of salt and lots of de-icer for the roadways," said Karen Pride, with the Chicago Department of Aviation.

Some travelers even asked Santa to use his magic to keep the planes on schedule Tuesday.

Ariana Rafaty is flying to Aruba with lots of family. They're feeling fortunate to miss all the snow.

"We kind of scheduled this in advance. We lucked out since we're not gonna be here while it's really bad, but I'm really grateful that were able to go somewhere," she said.

Travelers are urged to check with their airlines during the week to make sure their flights are not canceled.

As holiday travelers buzzed throughout the airport, there was a large emergency response at O'Hare's Terminal 1 about 6:30 a.m., as Chicago fire crews arrived to assist the Federal Aviation Administration in investigating a report of a suspicious package , CFD said.

Authorities cordoned off sections of Terminal 1 temporarily, but caution tape was removed by about 7 a.m.

"I saw a bunch of emergency lights, and I was like 'oh great we're gonna be late' but we're not late," traveler Jeff Andersen said.

CPD said officers responded to a threat, but the scene has been secured.

Travelers are allowed to move throughout the terminal again.

Airlines struggle with lack of planes as summer travel set to hit record levels

The global airline industry is facing a summer squeeze, with travel demand expected to surpass pre-pandemic levels while aircraft deliveries drop sharply due to production problems at Boeing BA-N and Airbus.

Air carriers are spending billions on repairs to keep flying older, less fuel-efficient jets, and paying a premium to secure aircraft from lessors. But some carriers are still being forced to trim their schedules to cope with the lack of available planes. At the same time, the number of travellers globally is set to hit historic levels, with 4.7 billion people expected to travel in 2024 compared with 4.5 billion in 2019.

“We can expect a strong performance from airlines throughout the summer with some particularly high airfare,” said John Grant, senior analyst at travel data firm OAG.

Last December, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) had predicted a 9 per cent annual growth in global airline capacity this year. That estimate looks optimistic following Boeing’s safety crisis.

Passenger carriers will receive 19 per cent fewer aircraft this year than they expected because of production issues at Boeing and Airbus, said Martha Neubauer, senior associate at AeroDynamic Advisory.

U.S. carriers will receive 32 per cent fewer aircraft than planned a year ago because several airlines depend on Boeing’s 737 Max planes, Neubauer said. Boeing’s production has been curbed after a January mid-air panel blowout.

Boeing is reeling from a sprawling crisis that erupted after the Jan. 5 Alaska Airlines blowout. Regulators have put a cap on production of the 737 Max, but the company is not hitting even that level.

As many as 650 Airbus A320neo jets could be grounded in the first half of 2024 for inspections to deal with a flaw with RTX Corp’s Pratt & Whitney engines, RTX said last year.

In Europe, low-cost airline Ryanair has cut some routes. In the United States, United and Southwest have cut back flying and adjusted hiring and staffing plans.

Analysts expect capacity at most U.S. carriers in the second quarter to grow at a slower pace than a year ago. Airlines will update their growth plans and explain how they will offset capacity constraints when they report quarterly results, starting on Wednesday with Delta Air Lines.

Due to the shortage of new planes, the aircraft leasing market is booming. Data from Cirium Ascend Consultancy shows that lease rates for new Airbus A320-200neo and Boeing 737-8 Max aircraft have hit $400,000 per month, the highest since mid-2008.

Airlines are spending 30 per cent more on aircraft leases than before the pandemic, said John Heimlich, chief economist at Airlines for America (A4A) that represents major U.S. carriers.

They are also holding on to jets that are past their useful economic lives and require heavy maintenance that now takes several months, Heimlich said. Repair costs at United, Delta and American were up 40 per cent last year from 2019.

Increased leasing, repair and labour costs will bite in to profit despite the high demand, Heimlich said. U.S. passenger airlines posted a pre-tax margin of 4.5 per cent last year, with the bulk of contribution coming from Delta and United.

Fewer Americans are planning to travel on a plane this summer compared with a year ago due to high inflation, a survey by travel website the Vacationer showed. Airline fares are down year-on-year, but have been rising month-on-month.

No. 5: Coast Guard Marathon - Elizabeth City, North Carolina

If you've ever wanted a running tour of a military base, this one's for you. The Coast Guard Marathon runs through the U.S. Coast Guard Base Elizabeth City, along the Pasquotank riverfront, and even takes participants on the runway and around one of the last standing WWII airship hangars. Registration is open to both military personnel and civilians.

No. 3: Marine Corps Marathon - Arlington, Virginia

Known as "The People's Marathon," the Marine Corps Marathon honors the dedication and sacrifice of the United States Armed Forces. The race is known for its rich history and is one of the largest marathons in the world. With a course that winds through the streets of Arlington, Virginia, and Washington, D.C., the route passes many of the area's famous landmarks and monuments, including the National Mall and the U.S. Capitol.

No. 2: New York City Marathon - New York City, New York

Known for its enthusiastic crowd support, the famous New York City Marathon embodies the spirit and energy of the city where it takes place. A celebration of diversity and inclusivity, runners from all over the world come together to participate in this iconic event. The course takes runners through all five boroughs of the city, starting in Staten Island and finishing in Central Park. Along the way, runners pass by many of the city's famous landmarks, including the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge, the Empire State Building, and Times Square.

No. 1: Cincinnati Flying Pig Marathon - Cincinnati, Ohio

The Flying Pig Marathon is loved by runners, and for good reason. It's fun, with pig motifs used everywhere, from the "pig pen" corrals where different speed groups are segregated, to crossing the "finish swine" and attending the post-race party with pizza and beer. The course is also super attractive, albeit hilly, running through the most diverse and scenic neighborhoods of Cincinnati and surrounding townships, and alongside the Ohio River. Finishers get medals and mylar blankets to go with all the post-pig party refreshments.

What time the 2024 solar eclipse started, reached peak totality and ended

The 2024 solar eclipse will be visible across North America today. As the moon's position between the Earth and sun casts a shadow on North America, that shadow, or umbra, will travel along the surface from west to east at more than 1,500 miles per hour along the path of totality . 

That means the eclipse will start, peak and end at different times — as will the moments of total darkness along the path of totality — and the best time to view the eclipse depends on where you are located. Some places along the path will have more totality time than others.

In Texas, the south-central region had clouds in the forecast , but it was better to the northeast, according to the National Weather Service. The best eclipse viewing weather was expected in New Hampshire, Vermont and Maine, as well as in Canada's New Brunswick and Newfoundland.

What time does the 2024 total solar eclipse start?

The total solar eclipse will emerge over the South Pacific Ocean before the shadow falls across North America, beginning in parts of Mexico. The path of totality , where onlookers can witness the moon fully blocking the sun (through eclipse viewing glasses for safety ), is expected to first make landfall near the city of Mazatlán around 9:51 a.m. MT. 

The total solar eclipse will cross over the U.S.-Mexico border into Texas, where it will emerge over Eagle Pass at 12:10 p.m. CT and then peak at about 1:27 p.m. CT.

In Dallas, NASA data shows the partial eclipse will first become visible at 12:23 p.m. CT and peak at 1:40 p.m. CT. The next states in the path of totality are Oklahoma and Arkansas, where the eclipse begins in Little Rock at 12:33 p.m. CT. 

Cleveland will see the beginning of the eclipse at 1:59 p.m. ET. Darkness will start spreading over the sky in Buffalo, New York, at 2:04 p.m. ET. Then, the eclipse will reach northwestern Vermont, including Burlington, at 2:14 p.m. ET. Parts of New Hampshire and Maine will also follow in the path of totality before the eclipse first reaches the Canadian mainland  at 3:13 p.m. ET.

Although the experience won't be exactly the same, viewers in all the contiguous U.S. states outside the path of totality will still be able to see a partial eclipse. Some places will see most of the sun blocked by the moon, including Washington, D.C., where the partial eclipse will start at 2:04 p.m. ET and peak at about 3:20 p.m. ET.

In Chicago, viewers can start viewing the partial eclipse at 12:51 p.m. CT, with the peak arriving at 2:07 p.m. CT.  In Detroit, viewers will be able to enjoy a near-total eclipse beginning at 1:58 p.m. ET and peaking at 3:14 p.m. ET.

New York City will also see a substantial partial eclipse, beginning at 2:10 p.m. ET and peaking around 3:25 p.m. ET.

In Boston it will begin at 2:16 p.m. ET and peak at about 3:29 p.m. ET.

The below table by NASA shows when the eclipse will start, peak and end in 13 cities along the eclipse's path.

What time will the solar eclipse reach peak totality?

Millions more people will have the chance to witness the total solar eclipse this year than during the last total solar eclipse , which was visible from the U.S. in 2017. 

The eclipse's peak will mean something different for cities within the path of totality and for those outside. Within the path of totality, darkness will fall for a few minutes. The longest will last more than 4 minutes, but most places will see between 3.5 and 4 minutes of totality. In cities experiencing a partial eclipse, a percentage of the sun will be obscured for more than two hours.

Mazatlán is set to experience totality at 11:07 am PT. Dallas will be able to see the moon fully cover the sun at 1:40 p.m. CT. Little Rock will start to see the full eclipse at 1:51 p.m. CT, Cleveland at 3:13 p.m. ET and Buffalo at 3:18 p.m. ET. Totality will reach Burlington at 3:26 p.m. ET before moving into the remaining states and reaching Canada around 4:25 p.m.

Outside the path of totality, 87.4% of the sun will be eclipsed in Washington, D.C. at 3:20 p.m. ET, and Chicago will have maximum coverage of 93.9% at 2:07 p.m. CT. New York City is much closer to the path of totality this year than it was in 2017; it will see 89.6% coverage at 3:25 p.m. EDT. 

Detroit is another city that will encounter a near-total eclipse, with 99.2% maximum coverage at 3:14 p.m. ET. Boston will see 92.4% coverage at 3:29 p.m. ET.

What time will the solar eclipse end?

The eclipse will leave continental North America from Newfoundland, Canada, at 5:16 p.m. NT, according to NASA.

At the beginning of the path of totality in Mazatlán, the eclipse will be over by 12:32 p.m. PT, and it will leave Dallas at 3:02 p.m. CT. The eclipse will end in Little Rock at 3:11 p.m. CT, Cleveland at 4:29 p.m. CDT and Buffalo at 4:32 p.m. ET. Burlington won't be far behind, with the eclipse concluding at 4:37 p.m. ET.

Meanwhile, the viewing will end in Chicago at 3:21 p.m. CT, Washington, D.C. at 4:32 p.m. ET, and New York City at 4:36 p.m. ET. 

In Detroit, the partial eclipse will disappear at 4:27 p.m. ET, and in Boston, it will be over at 4:39 p.m. ET.

How long will the eclipse last in total?

The total solar eclipse will begin in Mexico at 11:07 a.m. PT and leave continental North America at 5:16 p.m. NT. From the time the partial eclipse first appears on Earth to its final glimpses before disappearing thousands of miles away, the celestial show will dazzle viewers for about 5 hours, according to timeanddate.com . 

The length of the total solar eclipse at points along the path depends on the viewing location. The longest will be 4 minutes and 28 seconds, northwest of Torreón, Mexico. Near the center of the path, totality takes place for the longest periods of time, according to NASA.

Spectators will observe totality for much longer today than during the 2017 eclipse , when the longest stretch of totality was 2 minutes and 32 seconds.

The moon's shadow seen on Earth today, called the umbra, travels at more than 1,500 miles per hour, according to NASA. It would move even more quickly if the Earth rotated in the opposite direction.

What is the longest a solar eclipse has ever lasted?

The longest known totality was 7 minutes and 28 seconds in 743 B.C. However, NASA says this record will be broken in 2186 with a 7 minute, 29 second total solar eclipse. The next total solar eclipse visible from parts of the U.S. won't happen until Aug. 23, 2044.
