12 Unconventional Ways to Save on Travel

Points and miles are major, but there are other cheap ways to travel too.

Consider setting up airfare alerts, housesitting and traveling midweek to help stay in budget.

Traveling can be expensive, and even when you rely on widely known savings tactics – such as traveling in off-peak seasons or staying at a hostel or a rental with a kitchen – the costs inevitably add up. If you're looking for ways to save on your next trip, add these unconventional tips provided by travel industry experts to your hat of travel tricks.

Get a set of packing cubes

Traveling with just a carry-on bag is a cost-effective option since it's typically free on most major airlines, but it's often easier said than done. That's why packing cubes are a good investment. They don't cost much – you can get a quality set like this one by Bagail for less than $25 – and they inevitably allow you to save space and fit more in your carry-on (or checked luggage ).

Choose the flight, then the destination

Scott Keyes, flight expert and founder of Scott's Cheap Flights , recommends changing the way you search for flights to save on airfare . Instead of looking for flights to a specific destination, use a flight comparison tool like Google Flights , Momondo or Skyscanner to browse a variety of airfares from your preferred airport(s). Maybe a trip to Barcelona wasn't what you originally had in mind, but if the price is right, why not head there instead?

Consider alternate airports

While flying from the airport closest to home is always the most convenient option, Keyes also suggests comparing fares from other airports, even those that are a few hours away. You may find prices are hundreds of dollars less to get to the same location, making the combined cost of gas, parking and driving time an excellent investment.

If you can drive a few hours to a larger airport with more flight options in general, that may be even better. Not only do you have the potential to save money, but you're more likely to find a direct flight or a route with fewer layovers.

[Read: What to Do If Your Flight Is Canceled or Delayed .]

Set up airfare alerts

If you're eager to travel far and want to save big on airfare, keep an eye out for short-term airfare offers on websites like Hopper and Trip.com . These sites offer deals that usually last a short time, meaning you have to strike while the iron is hot. "I do this every time I book a flight and I usually save at least 10%, but sometimes up to 75%," says Josh Band of A Backpacker's World . "I once got a flight that should have been $200-plus for just over $50 by setting up an alert."

Go to Europe for Thanksgiving

Many Americans opt to head to Grandma's house or another domestic destination for turkey dinner. However, not as many escape to the Caribbean and Mexico, and even less go to Europe – which means you're more likely to find flight deals to Paris , London and other European vacations you've been wanting to cross off your bucket list.

Travel midweek

There's no set day of the week to book the cheapest airfare, but there are less expensive days to travel, says Keyes. He recommends flying on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays since most business travelers fly on Sundays and Mondays (and consequently drive up the cost of airfare on those days).

Consider a 'bleisure' trip

If you have an upcoming business trip in a unique or new-to-you destination, consider tacking on a few personal days to the journey. This way, you can enjoy a mini-vacation sans airfare (assuming your company will cover that portion).

[Read: The Best Garment Bags for Travel, According to Reviews .]

Buy travel insurance

It may sound counterintuitive, but purchasing travel insurance can save your bank account (and your sanity) in the event that you or a family member falls ill or has another emergency that forces you to change your vacation plans before or during the trip. A basic and cheap travel insurance policy will suffice, though there are coverage options for a wide variety of needs – including cancel for any reason travel insurance (which is exactly what it sounds like).

Housesit for free accommodations

Did you know you can enjoy free accommodations in exchange for housesitting? Sites like House Sitters America and Mind My House offer housesitting opportunities for a small annual fee (less than $50). Many of the homeowners have pets who need TLC while they're gone, too, making this a fun and budget-friendly alternative to traditional rentals like Airbnb. No matter where you travel, it doesn't get much better than living like a local and playing with pups.

Similarly, you can try couch surfing, which allows you to stay with a local for free. Services like the site Couchsurfing charge a negligible monthly or annual fee to sign up and get verified for safety purposes, while others such as BeWelcome are free. These services also provide exclusive meetups with other travelers.

Sign up for a family loyalty program

Did you know there are loyalty programs that allow family members or groups to pool rewards or freely transfer rewards to others?

"This can be a great option for infrequent travelers who may not rack up enough points or miles for a free flight or hotel room individually – but can reach those rewards when combined," says Nick Ewen, director of content for The Points Guy . "In some cases, it's a single, pooled account that automatically combines points (like JetBlue). In other cases, you can simply transfer points from one account to another (like Hilton Honors, World of Hyatt, or Marriott Bonvoy)." He recommends reading the full terms and conditions of these programs, as some impose time limits, maximum transfer amounts and other restrictions.

Use travel rewards on experiences

Don't forget that both airline credit cards and airline rewards programs can be used to cover more than flights and hotels. Programs like Chase Ultimate Rewards make it easy to redeem points for sporting events, dining (including reservations, exclusive culinary experiences and takeout orders) and more.

You can also use points earned on hotel credit cards as well as hotel rewards programs to pay for fun experiences in hundreds of destinations around the world. Options range from cooking classes and concerts to outdoor activities and spa experiences .

Book a refundable car rental

While some companies offer discounts for prepaid car rentals, many travelers say they've had better luck with booking refundable car rentals , allowing them to secure a reasonable rate while keeping a watchful eye for price drops. If a better price pops up, simply cancel your original reservation and book at the lower rate. Frequent traveler Pamela Howard, who writes about her experiences on Our Adventure Is Everywhere , says she's consistently able to save anywhere from $25 to $100 using this tactic on Costco Travel car rentals. "It's simple and that little bit of time rechecking rates pays substantially in savings."

Ewen says you can do the same when you book a flight or hotel using points since many loyalty programs have flexible cancellation policies. "If you lock in a flight at 35,000 miles and see that your same ticket is 30,000 miles just a week later, you should be able to rebook and get those 5,000 miles back into your account," he explains.

How to save money while traveling

1. pack light.

Packing light is undoubtedly beneficial for avoiding checked bag fees , but there are a few other incentives to do so. For starters, packing light means you can get around a lot easier. With a light suitcase or backpack, you're more agile, enabling you to navigate public transit rather than feel like you need to pay for a taxi.

So how do you pack light? Bring clothes that you can wash easily in a sink. Look for items that dry quickly, and pick clothes that you can mix and match. Default to basic items that go with pretty much any outfit, so you don't need to cram four pairs of shoes into your bag.

Plus, packing light means you won't be tempted to pay for souvenirs — because limited capacity in your suitcase or backpack will deter your urges.

2. Shop at local grocery stores

Visiting local markets can be an adventure on its own. You'll find different types of foods that you wouldn't necessarily come across at home. Plus, having food on hand means you'll likely save money, as you'll be less tempted to buy the stale, overpriced muffin from the hotel cafe just because you were hungry.

3. Pack snacks

If you can't visit a local market, packing snacks from home is the next best thing. Look for protein-heavy items like jerky and protein bars, which can make you feel full and not take up too much space in your luggage.

Bottled water can also shape up to be a considerable expense when you're on the go. Assuming you have access to a clean water source, pack your canteen, and consider a portable water bottle that can collapse to fit in your pocket.

4. Get yourself into the airport lounge

and save trip

The Centurion Lounge at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport has a full buffet and access for certain American Express cardholders. (Photo courtesy of American Express)

One of the best ways to get food while traveling is at an airport lounge. Many premium travel credit cards offer lounge access as perks, generally through the Priority Pass lounge membership program . Food quality ranges by lounge, but you can usually expect light snacks like fruit, chips, cookies and coffee. The fancier lounges sometimes provide entire buffet meals.

Beyond food, lounges can provide Wi-Fi speeds typically faster than what's offered in the airport. In addition, some lounges offer showers, exercise rooms or massages. Get to the airport early to maximize the amenities.

5. Arrive early

Leave plenty of time to get to the airport early. If you're running late, you might hail an overpriced cab in a panic instead of taking public transportation at typically a fraction of the cost. You may also find that rideshare prices could be higher for routes to the airport at certain times. Having more time allows you to avoid the surge pricing.

Don't risk having to rebook a flight last minute because you arrived late.

6. Get TSA PreCheck or Global Entry membership fees reimbursed

You can speed through airport crowds by applying for either TSA PreCheck or Global Entry . Both are types of Trusted Traveler programs offered by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

If approved, you'll be able to use expedited lanes, which typically have shorter, quicker lines because travelers aren't forced to remove their shoes, laptops, belts or jackets. According to TSA's data, 94% of TSA PreCheck passengers waited less than five minutes in December 2021.

Certain credit cards will reimburse your application fee , typically $85 for TSA PreCheck or $100 for Global Entry (though the TSA PreCheck fee has recently changed to $78 ).

7. Take advantage of credit card free night certificates

Some hotel credit cards — even those with sub-$100 annual fees — offer free hotel night certificates . Assuming the value of your hotel room is more than the credit card's annual fee (which it very easily can be), it could be a smart move to get one of these cards to save some money with a free night stay.

Plus, these cards typically offer extra benefits like elite status , making your stay more enjoyable, and bonus points, which can make future stays free — or at least cheaper.

8. Book hotel rooms on points

Speaking of bonus points, it's almost always a good idea to spend your hotel points rather than save them. Booking rooms on points versus cash is certainly a smart way to avoid dipping into your cash savings for a vacation, but there are a few other benefits:

You may avoid resort fees: Resort fees (those extra charges that hotels impose to cover additional amenity usages like pools and Wi-Fi) are irritating, and they can sometimes run north of $50 per night. Thankfully, some hotel loyalty programs, including Hilton Honors and World of Hyatt , don't charge them for rooms booked on points.

You might get extra discounts: For stays booked on points, you might unlock additional discounts for staying longer. For example, you receive the lowest point-value night free for every five consecutive nights stayed at a Marriott property funded with Marriott Bonvoy points. Hilton has a similar policy where members with at least Silver Elite membership receive the fifth night free when booking on points.

9. Travel during the offseason

If you can travel during the offseason, that's not only a way to avoid crowds and the headaches that come with them, but you'll usually be able to get a better deal. A NerdWallet analysis conducted in spring 2021 of over 1,110 airfares found that airfares averaged more expensive for holiday travel than any other booking window .

Airfares for flight routes during the holiday season average 41% more expensive than other flights booked roughly six months out during non-holiday seasons.

10. Explore tourist attractions that don't cost you any money

and save trip

The Hamon Observation Tower at San Francisco's de Young Museum in Golden Gate Park is free to visit.

Even trips to notoriously expensive spots like San Francisco, New York City or Walt Disney World don't have to break the bank.

For example, there are tons of no-cost things to do at Disney World. Ride around the monorail, or watch fireworks from the beach at Disney's Polynesian Village Resort. In addition, you can find free walking tours in most major cities (though tour guides typically rely on gratuity, so tip accordingly).

Prioritize the free tourist attractions over the ones that have a fee. For example, tickets to San Francisco's de Young Museum cost about $15, but you can go to one of its coolest rooms, the Hamon Observation Tower, for free panoramic views of the city.

And while there are dozens of excellent cultural institutions in St. Louis, start at the ones that have free admission, including the Saint Louis Art Museum, Saint Louis Science Center and Saint Louis Zoo. If time permits, then turn to the attractions with a fee.

» Learn more: How to find cheap activities in any city

11. Get a baseline understanding of typical costs

Knowing the general prices of things can help you avoid getting up charged with a so-called, unofficial "tourist tax."

For instance, look up average taxi costs before you travel so you know the ranges to expect. Consider researching typical prices for items at the market so you can haggle with confidence. Avoid overpaying on a bus fare by knowing how to purchase official tickets in advance.

12. Consider travel insurance

If you're worried about losing the value of upfront travel costs, consider purchasing travel insurance . This optional standalone insurance can be purchased separately from your airfare.

But you might not even need to pay out-of-pocket for trip insurance because many credit cards offer travel insurance as a built-in benefit to customers who pay for travel expenses such as flights or hotels on that card.

Sometimes, though, not even trip insurance will guarantee a refund. Unless you’ve purchased a Cancel For Any Reason policy , which is usually more expensive, you’re only entitled to a refund if you cancel for a covered reason.

Final thoughts on all the ways to save money on travel

Travel costs can add up. Your vacation might not be as cheap as that slick airfare deal may have led you to believe when you factor in other expenses. Often, vacation spending can rocket past your initial budget once you're out on the road.

Saving money on travel with these tricks can give you more freedom to spend where you need, whether that's on this trip or your next one.

The first step for saving money for travel starts with a goal.

Without one, you have nothing to work towards, and it’s going to make it  thaaat  much harder to give up your “Trenta, no foam,five-shott, half-caff., no foam, pumpkin spice latte, with no foam at 210 degrees.”

Whatever number you decide to work towards, make saving for it a non-negotiable.

An easy way to force yourself not to “accidentally” forget is by creating a separate savings goal within the FNB app in the  Nav-Money  section.

Set up a savings goal (the app will calculate how much you need to save each month) and create a scheduled payment date.

And like all your other debit orders, you’ll automatically save every single month without thinking about it.

ways to save money for travel with a spreadsheet

Before I started travelling, I wasn’t really aware of my daily expenses.

Well, besides the many drunken nights and dancing on tables in Johannesburg .

So when I started planning for my first big trip abroad, I had to take a good, hard look at where my money was going and nip those leaks in the bud.

My favourite method (which I still use today but switched over to Notion) is to create an Excel spreadsheet and track every single purchase.

I categorise everything, so I can see EXACTLY how much I’m spending on my business, shopping, food, debit orders etc.

When you’re done, take it a step further. Highlight your essential and non-essential expenses and add each section up.

Pssst…An essential is something like your RENT. You have to pay it every month, not shopping sprees to Cotton On.

Look at your non-essential list and cull any expenses you can live without. Get rid of those subscriptions you don’t use and things you don’t really need, like Spotify Premium.

Just turn the sound off when the ads come on, and you’ve got R70.00 to put towards watching your favourite band LIVE in Belgium.

In the same Excel spreadsheet, create a column for the amount of money you’re committing to spending on each expense.

For example:  Maybe you’re only going to put R200.00 per month towards an UberEats treat.

You can take your budget a step further with the FNB app Nav Money section…again.

(…No, this is not sponsored. A girl can only dream…)

Inside the  Smart Budget  tool, you can set spending limits for each expense category (create as many as you want!).

There are also Smart Alerts which will let you know if you’re getting close to overspending for a category in the month.

Remember, sticking to your budget won’t always be easy. It’s going to require self-control.

But when you find yourself about to go on a spending spree, ask yourself what experience you would rather have:

That trip to Bali or overpriced Col’Cacchio pizza?

Another one of my favourite FNB money-saving tricks (and the last one, I promise) is the  Savings Pocket .

It’s a ridiculously easy way to save for a trip on autopilot.

Once the service is activated, FNB automatically rounds up amounts every time you swipe your card and add it to your Savings Pocket.

You won’t be saving millions, but those small amounts add up, and when you’re trying to stretch your travel budget, every little bit helps.

How to Make Money for Travel

girl at blyde river canyon

Downsizing is an excellent way to make extra money for travel and de-clutter your life.

I’m the former owner of 20+ shoes I only wore once or twice and had an entire suitcase of clothes from my teenage years.

Spend an entire weekend going through your wardrobe, gadgets and everything else you own and make a sell, donate and keep pile.

When you’re done, take photos of everything you want to sell, upload it to Facebook Marketplace and secure that bag!

Swagbucks  is a site that rewards you for Googling and answering surveys.

Hop on once a day, answer a few questions, and you’ll earn points you can redeem for gift cards or get cash back from PayPal.

The amounts per survey aren’t HUGE, but over time it adds up.

Plus, you can use your Swagbucks moola to save up for all those $10 massages in Bali!

You can do the same to raise extra funds before your trip OR use it as a way to make money while travelling.

Think about your most profitable skills and talents and how you can monetise what you know.

For example:

  • Start freelance writing or graphic design
  • Become a part-time social media manager for small brands
  • Tutor English online
  • Pick up a bartending job on the weekends
  • Get a part-time retail job
  • Sell prints of your photographs

How to Save Money on Flights

plane over building

I’m often asked how I scoop up flight deals like:

  • R2,500 return to Rwanda
  • R5,000 return to Belgium
  • R4,500 return to Thailand

The answer? Skyscanner .

It’s my holy grail. I swear by it. It’s the #1 way I save on travel and cut costs.

Use the advanced filtering options to find the cheapest flights from any destination in the world as well as the cheapest month to travel.

You can also set up flight alerts if you want to monitor prices before whipping out your credit card.

Got your eye on a destination (or even a couple)?

The best way to save money on flights is to be flexible with your dates.

It will give you the wiggle room you need to select the cheapest departing and returning dates.

This little trick is what has saved me thousands of Rands in airfare and is usually the deciding factor in my trip length.

laptop on desk

For some odd reason, some flight prices change according to your location.

Invest in a quality VPN like  Express VPN  (you can also use it to watch Buffy The Vampire Slayer on Hulu btw) and change your IP address with a single click of your mouse.

For the latest deals on local and international flights – sign up for airline newsletters.

You’ll get news on discounts before everyone else, and when seats are limited – it’s vital to have your credit card ready to go before you miss out.

We are daaaaays away from the biggest retail sales day of the year: Black Friday .

Besides massive discounts on gadgets and clothes galore, the airlines of the world also get in on the action. It’s one of the best ways to save money on travel and spend less on airfare.

Sign up to those mailing lists and keep your eye on Skyscanner for drops in prices.

I scooped up a Black Friday deal on round-trip airfare to Bali for R6,000.00 in 2019!

(Flights to Bali from South Africa are usually R8,000.00 return).

How to Save Money on Accommodation

mumbo island in malawi

For my 29th birthday, I flew to Mumbo Island in Malawi . It’s one of the top eco-hotels in the world, and a night here is worth a pretty penny.

But I found an incredible combo deal to the island.

For R20,000 in total, I got:

  • Return flights to Johannesburg
  • Six nights of accommodation
  • All meals included excluding alcohol
  • All activities included besides scuba diving
  • Transport to and from the island

For specific destinations like Seychelles, Zanzibar and Madagascar, it often works out cheaper to buy a flight + hotel combo deal than booking everything separately.

Planning a romantic rendevous for two in South Africa ?

Always ask the safari lodge or property if they have rates for locals.

Most places have incredible discounts for South Africans, which can shave a couple of thousands off the per-night rate and help you cut down your travel costs.

It often works out cheaper to rent out an entire home than to book a private hotel room.

Case in point: Bali.

You can stay in a stunning 6-person private villa for around R800 per night.

Meanwhile,  shared dorm rooms in hostels  on the island cost anywhere from R150.00 – R200.00 per person per night.

Sign up for sites like Nomador and explore the world while house-sitting and looking after people’s pets.

It’s a win-win situation.

You get free accommodation (plus a fur child travel buddy), and the owners don’t need to put their animals in a kennel.

Couchsurfing  is another way you can score free accommodation around the world.

How it works:

Users can list their couch (or room) on the site, and travellers can request to stay there.

A big part of the Couchsurfing culture is having authentic travel experiences and learning about different cultures.

So I wouldn’t recommend using the site if you’re not going to make time to get to know your hosts or you’re not going to respect their culture and space.

I used the site while backpacking around South Africa and met some incredible people!

However, safety is something you need to keep in mind, especially if you’re a solo female traveller.

ubud, bali villa

The more you use  Booking.com , the more discounts you unlock.

You can get up to 10% off select properties around the world as well as perks like free cancellation and access to secret deals.

WWOOFing  has nothing to do with looking after adorable puppies, but it’s a way to get free accommodation on farms around the world.

Sign up on the site and experience sustainable living on local organic farms and family homes.

To score a free bed, you’ll need to participate in the daily life of your host and help out on the farm.

Think of it more as a cultural exchange holiday than you doing your own thing 100% of the time.

Another way you can get a free roof over your head is by working at a hostel.

Some hostels will let you stay for free in exchange for work around the property.

Your tasks might include checking in guests, managing social media accounts, replying to emails, cleaning or cooking meals.

breakfast at Schoone Oordt Country House

It’s one less travel expense and meal you need to worry about!

Oh, and make sure to set your alarm so you don’t miss breakfast. It’s happened to me a few times, and the frugal traveller inside me was most displeased.

How to Save Money on Food & Drink

girl drinking mojito

Booze is expensive. It can quickly eat into your savings and your travel budget if you’re not careful.

Before you go on your trip, re-live your varsity days. Switch to a cheaper brand of wine/gin/vodka/beer and opt to pre-drink before a night out.

Or you can stay in and drink with friends at home.

I love me some UberEats, but it’s not CHEAP.

As delicious as it is to get your favourite Indian curry delivered to your house, an authentic curry in India is so much better.

To help you avoid the temptation of opening up the app, meal prep for the week. It solves the problem of feeling “too lazy” to cook dinner or buying fast food for lunch.

Business Insider  compared prices of essentials across all major South African supermarkets, and Shoprite came out on top as the most affordable option.

It’s 20% cheaper than Woolworths, with Checkers coming in a close second.

Reduce your monthly bills on groceries even further by buying in bulk and planning your meals around what is on special AND in season.

How to Save Money on Your Lifestyle

girl on top of lions head

You can still have fun without it negatively affecting your bank balance.

Before you leave for your trip, save a bit of money for your travel fund by opting for free activities around your city.

Explore nearby hiking trails, go to food markets, visit museums on “no entrance” days, go to the beach and keep tabs on other free events.

Netflix subscriptions cost as little as R60.00 per month.

Meanwhile, a trip to the movies is usually R100.00 or more per person.

You can always catch up with the latest movie releases during your 8-hour flight to Paris.

From Happy Hours to Wacky Wednesdays at Steers and all-you-can-eat sushi – hunt down those deals which give you more bang for your buck.

coffee break

I love a good cup of coffee, but all those delicious cappuccinos add up.

Instead of shelling out R26.00 to R30.00 per cup, re-direct that money to your travel savings account.

Plus, the coffee in Italy just hits differently.

Is your expensive gym membership collecting dust? Do you struggle to stay consistent with your workouts?

Cut the cost and switch to free at-home workouts.

Chloe Ting (one of the biggest fitness influencers in the world) has dozens of free workout plans.

No gym required.

If you’re serious about cutting costs to travel the world, it’s time to act like it’s 2017 again – the height of Cape Town’s drought:

  • Switch the water off in the shower when you’re lathering up.
  • Collect the greywater to flush your toilet and water your plants.
  • Keep your showers as short as possible.
  • Wash your dishes by hand instead of using the dishwasher.

The same goes for your electricity bill:

  • Keep the lights off when you’re not in the room.
  • Switch the plug points off at the wall when not in use.
  • Use energy-saving lightbulbs.
  • Dry your clothes outside instead of using the tumble dryer.

Got plans with your friends? Carpool.

Not only is it better for the environment, but you get to split fuel costs and save money.

Manicures, facials, waxes and massages are fantastic ways to pamper yourself and practice self-care – but it’s NOT cheap.

If you’re serious about cutting costs and boosting your travel budget, make the sacrifice and do DIY treatments at home.

Then you’ll have more than enough travel money for daily R200.00 massages in Bali!

I know moving back in with your parents isn’t possible for everyone, but if the option is there – take it!

Rent in South Africa can cost anywhere from R4,000.00 to R8,000.00 (or more!) per month.

Imagine if you could bank some of that coin every month. You’ll hit your travel goal faster and find your bum on a seat on a plane in no time.

P.S. Give your ‘rents money towards bills while you’re there.

Ways to Save Money While Travelling

brunette standing on old city walls in dubrovnik

Each destination has high, shoulder and low seasons for tourism.

For mega discounts on hotels, attractions and flights, plan your trip over the quieter months.

While you might have to sacrifice the good weather, you’ll gain smaller crowds at the top landmarks and a bunch of money in your wallet.

It’s no secret that countries like Australia, the USA, and most of Europe are ridiculously expensive for South Africans.

With a weak currency, you need to apply your frugal ways by going on holiday to Rand-Friendly destinations.

It’s much cheaper to spend two weeks in Bali or Thailand than Paris . Your money goes further, and you can afford to stay in luxe accommodation with more wiggle room for activities.

If there is one thing I hate the most – it’s admin.

And that makes Schengen visas an incredibly painful and expensive process.

Instead of putting yourself (and your wallet) through the experience, travel to one of the 90 visa-free destinations for South Africans.

You don’t need to worry about collecting 3-month payslips, employment letters, bank statements, visa processing fees and all that other bullshit.

You simply arrive, fill out a form and get a stamp in your passport.

MRT Station in Singapore

In countries like Singapore , Turkey and the UK which have robust public transportation systems, it’s much cheaper to hop on the metro than hire a car.

You can get further discounts by using the destination’s transport card over buying a single ticket every single time.

These cards usually offer fare discounts on buses, trains, trams and metros.

It’s free, and you get a workout.

(I usually clock up 20,000+ steps per day in walkable cities like Rome ).

BUT always check if it’s safe to do so (especially if you’re a solo female traveller) and the distances.

Renting a car is expensive.

And when you throw in parking costs on top of that, it starts to eat a huge chunk of your travel budget.

Unless you’re planning a massive road trip around South Africa or you’re travelling to a country where public transport isn’t safe, forgo the car hire and stretch your money further.

I think we can all agree that metered taxi prices in most countries are a complete rip-off.

The number of times I’ve been scammed is too damn high!

Also, I suck at bartering prices. It gives me so much anxiety that I usually accept the first or second price.

Ridesharing apps like Uber, Taxify and Grabr have helped me save so much money over the years.

You can instantly see how much a ride will cost, and there’s no need to waste time negotiating prices with drivers.

Want to share a long-distance trip at a rate that’s much cheaper than buses or trains?

Try carpooling sites!

Sites like  HitchPlanet ,  BlaBlaCar  and  Kangaride  match you with a driver going in the same direction.

Think of it like Tinder without the Netflix and chill.

Again, as a solo female traveller, safety is something you need to consider when using these sites.

Okay, hear me out.

Overnight buses and trains aren’t comfortable in any shape or form.

BUT if you’re willing to sacrifice a good night’s sleep, you can save money on accommodation.

Fares are usually cheaper than a night at a hotel. You get to reduce your carbon footprint and arrive at your next destination without losing a day.

It’s a win-win!

My love for travelling with only a carry-on bag came on hot and heavy when I realised how much some budget airlines charge for checked-in baggage.

After countless YouTube videos, I learnt how to fit my entire life in a 22-centimetre x 35-centimetre x 56-centimetre bag and weigh in at 7-10kg.

When it comes to country-hopping in Europe or Southeast Asia, travelling light will save lots of money.

And bonus: You don’t need to worry about your bag getting lost.

It’s cheaper than using a laundry mat.

Plus, it makes it easier to pull off the carry-on-only trick.

It’s a rip-off.

The exchange rates aren’t in your favour, and you have to pay the teller a commission.

Instead, speak to your bank before you leave and unlock your debit and credit card for international travel.

(Always travel with two cards and keep them in separate places in case you lose one)

When you arrive at your destination, withdraw money at an ATM in the airport.

The machines have a much better exchange rate.

The only exception is if you need money to pay for a visa on arrival. Always organise that before you leave in the correct currency.

Do your research and find a bank card that isn’t going to charge you for overseas withdrawals and swipes.

If you’re using your card with fees, keep your withdrawals and swipes to a minimum.

A good rule of thumb is always to eat where the locals eat.

If you see a restaurant with only tourists – it’s most likely a tourist trap with high prices.

But if you come across one with only locals, you can bet the food is:

  • Delicious AF

For example, in Bali, the local warungs charge as little as R30.00 to R50.00 per meal. Meanwhile, the restaurants for tourists charge as much as R200.00 per dish.

Booze at bars and clubs is expensive in most countries around the world.

If you want to drink, buy a bottle of your poison at the supermarket and pre-game.

The beauty of staying in an Airbnb, a hostel or self-catering accommodation is that you don’t have to eat all your meals at restaurants.

Go grocery shopping, make yourself sandwiches for lunch and cook dinners at home.

It’s worth it when you’ll have extra cash left over for once-in-a-lifetime experiences like swimming with whale sharks, tracking cheetahs on foot and hot-air balloon rides over the Serengeti.

Tip: Do your research and go to the Shoprite or Checkers of the destination – NOT the local Woolworths.

Buying water bottles is bad for the environment and your wallet.

When travelling to a country with drinkable water, bring a reusable water bottle and fill it up as you go.

In some countries like Italy and Spain, the locals take their lunchtime specials super seriously.

Keep an eye out for these delicious discounts and fuel up in between exploring.

History nerd?

Google all the museums you want to visit beforehand and make a note of the entrance-free days of the week.

It’s one of the best ways to save money while travelling without making sacrifices to your itinerary.

Plan your trip around these dates, and you won’t pay a cent to wander around the iconic Louvre or Van Gogh Museum.

For this next money-saving travel tip – you need to do the math.

The tourist city cards CAN give you major discounts on entrance fees and even free transportation, but it’s up to you to work out if it’s worth it.

For example, if you only have 3-days in Rome:

  • Will you have time to see enough attractions to make the cost of the card worth it?
  • Does the card give you access to the sites YOU want to see?
  • Or is it cheaper to pay the separate entrance fees per attraction?

No cash for entrance fees? No problem!

It’s surprising how much of a destination you can see without paying a cent.

I have an entire itinerary for Rome dedicated to seeing the top sights for free!

Do your research beforehand and come up with a list of free or cost-effective things to do. Sprinkle those in between a few paid activities at the top of your bucket list, and you’re good to go!

A downside of solo travel is it more expensive.

Most places require a minimum amount of people to do the tour. Otherwise, you have to pay a much higher single supplement fee.

When you travel with a group, you can split costs for guides, transport, accommodation, activities and more.

No friends keen to go with you?

Stay at a hostel and rope in your fellow travellers for an adventure!

There are usually discounts for students and pensioners (even if a sign is nowhere in sight).

But you can get discounts outside of those two groups.

In Africa, most countries have a rate for SADC nationals (Southern Africans) and EADC (East Africans).

You might even get a discount or free entry if it’s your birthday!

So remember, closed mouths don’t get fed.

Whew! Congrats on making it to the end of this mega money-saving travel tips post!

Hopefully, you’ve got more than a few ideas for how you can save money for travel before and during your trip.

  • On your iPhone, iPad, or Android phone, open the Google Maps app and tap the directions icon to save your favorite routes. Type in the source and target locations, choose your preferred way of transportation, and tap the "Pin" option at the bottom to add the route to your pinned routes list.

By saving a route on Google Maps, you can quickly get directions to your specified destination. You can save routes on your iPhone, iPad, and Android phones, and we'll show you how.

In this guide, we will use the "pin" option to save your route as a pinned item, since it is the most convenient and universal way to save a route.

When saving routes, know that you can only save driving and public transport routes . If you save a driving route, your source location will always be your current location regardless of what you used when you saved the route. For public transport routes, though, you can customize the source location.

On your iPhone, iPad, or Android phone, use the Google Maps app to save your favorite routes to your favorite places .

To start, open the Google Maps app on your phone. In the app, on the right side, tap the directions icon.

At the top of the Maps screen, type both source and target locations for which you want to get directions. Then choose your preferred way to get to your destination (driving or public transport).

On the same page, at the bottom, tap the "Pin" option. This adds your current route to your pinned routes list.

To view your pinned routes, including the one you just saved, open Google Maps and tap "Go" at the bottom.

In the "Go" tab, you will see all your pinned routes. Tap a route to open the actual directions.

Removing a pinned route is equally easy. To do so, on the directions page, tap "Pinned" at the bottom. This removes the selected route from the pinned routes list.

And that's how you get directions to your favorite places without manually tapping many buttons. Very useful!

On Android, you can add a shortcut for a route to your home screen . Then, when you tap this shortcut, your route will directly open in Google Maps.

To do so, open Google Maps and search for the directions you want to save.

On the directions screen, in the top-right corner, tap the three dots.

In the three-dots menu, tap "Add Route to Home Screen."

In the "Add to Home Screen" box, either drag the widget and place it on one of your home screens, or tap "Add Automatically" to add the widget to a vacant place on your home screen.

And you are now a tap away from accessing your favorite route in Google Maps. Enjoy!

In addition to routes, you can save your favorite places as well on Google Maps. If you'd like to protect your travel privacy, it's easy to delete your Google Maps movement and search history too.

Choose your own adventure: Where to go and how to save on summer vacations

and save trip

Revenge travel is so last year.

“It's not necessarily about just getting out of the house anymore,” said Sydney Stanback, Global Insights and Trends lead at Pinterest, which has seen more than 1 billion travel searches and more than 10 billion travel saves over the past year.

Sure, many of the usual suspects are once again among the most popular destinations across multiple search engines this year, but she said this summer, “It's more so about traveling with intention.”

According to NerdWallet’s Summer 2024 Travel Report , 45% of Americans plan to take a trip requiring a hotel stay or flight this summer with expenses averaging just under $3,600. A fifth of those travelers expect to go into debt to pay for vacations.

Here’s what to consider when booking a summer trip, including where to go, when to travel and how to save:

Learn more: Best travel insurance

What is the best place to travel in summer?

The answer is subjective, especially this summer.

“Everyone's kind of choosing their own adventure based off of what their needs are for travel,” Stanback said.

Pinterest’s Summer 2024 Travel Report found summer travelers are most interested in adventure, exploring mysterious or uncharted destinations, and rest. Searches for “quiet life” jumped 530%, but that doesn’t mean the same thing to everyone.

“My mother actually just took a yoga retreat to Panama,” Stanback said. “That's what she needed to do in order to get the rest that she needed and the well-being that she needed. But for me, when I think of rest and restoration, I simply think about going to a beach spa and just sitting and being by myself.”

Solo travel remains popular. Solo travel searches reached an all-time high in Google in January, but again, not for everyone.

“For Gen Z specifically, that need is to gather and reconnect with their community because they were in isolation for so long and during very meaningful moments in their lives,” Stanback said. She noted group travel and road trips are of keen interest to Gen Z.

“It's not necessarily about traveling and going out and going to restaurants and going to bars and clubs,” she added. “We actually see that a lot with younger generations. They’re kind of stepping away from that and really considering their well-being when they're taking time off.”

Where do most tourists go in summer?

Expedia’s Summer Outlook and Google Flights identified the same cities among their most searched summer 2024 destinations based on flights, though rankings varied by platform.

Top 5 domestic destinations

◾ Orlando, Florida

◾ Los Angeles

◾ Las Vegas

Top 5 international destinations

◾ Cancun, Mexico

◾ Paris, host of the Summer Olympics

Allianz Partners found slightly different results in their analysis of “more than six million flight itineraries for trips between five and eight days in length for travel booked between Memorial Day weekend and Labor Day.”

Instead of LA and Vegas, Allianz named Boston and Honolulu among this summer’s top five domestic destinations. Internationally, San Jose del Cabo, Mexico; Oranjestad, Aruba; and Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, made Allianz’s top five, instead of Rome, Paris and Tokyo.

“I am expecting crowds to rival last summer's in popular overseas cities,” Expedia’s travel expert Melanie Fish said, noting how places like Barcelona and Venice are trying to curb overtourism. “They're trying fees and if that's not enough, they're going to have to go even further.”

How can I save on a trip?

Summer trips are already costly for many travelers. “Americans with household income under $100,000 accounted for nearly half (46%) of intended leisure travel spend in summer 2023,” according to Deloitte’s Facing travel’s future report from April.

Expedia’s Fish shared five tips for booking summer 2024 vacations:

◾ Bundle your trip. Booking airfare and a hotel at the same time can earn you deep discounts.

◾ Travel midweek or later in the summer if it's an option. You'll save money and save yourself from fighting crowds.

  • ◾ Fly early in the day … The early bird who takes the first flight of the day will typically get a better price and a lower chance of delays and cancellations. ◾ Book once, earn twice. You can stack rewards from your travel credit card (and) your airline.◾ Just go. Don't pressure yourself to create the trip of a lifetime … Do it in a bite-sized chunk if possible.

'Expensive in every way': What travelers should expect this summer

How far ahead should I book travel?

“The sweet spot is now,” Fish said. “We're within that 21- to 60-day pre-travel window to save around 15% on airfare, so now is the time to plan. That means ready, set, but maybe wait until August to actually go.”

She said travelers can save an average of $250 on international flights if they wait until the peak summer travel season passes.

“It's 15% cheaper on average to fly domestically in August versus June, 30% cheaper to fly to Europe in late summer, and 55% cheaper to fly to Mexico and the Caribbean in August,” she said. “Of course, August is peak hurricane season , so that has something to do with that price dip.”

If you’re planning a trip, you might be wondering how to figure out where to go and in what order. Luckily, Google has a free tool that you can use in order to get a better sense of your travel plans. We’ll walk you through how to make a travel itinerary with Google Maps through its My Maps feature. In a few easy steps, you can master an excellent organizational tool that’ll help you plan the best trip possible.

Setting Up Your Map

Step 1 Sign in to My Maps on your web browser.

  • Unfortunately, as of October 2021, Google no longer supports the “My Maps” app on phones. If you’re on mobile, you’ll have to use your phone’s web browser to access the site while on the go. [2] X Research source
  • If you don’t already have a Google account, setting one up is a quick process. A Google account gives you a number of benefits, including a new gmail address. Check out this link to start the set-up process: https://accounts.google.com/signup/v2/webcreateaccount?flowName=GlifWebSignIn&flowEntry=SignUp

Step 2 Create a new map through the home screen.

  • For instance, your might name your map something like “California Summer Trip 2022,” and you could enter a description like, “Places to see and eat during two-week California road trip.”

Step 4 Search for places to visit on your trip.

  • For example, for a California road trip, you might enter “Golden Gate Bridge” into the search box. My Maps will automatically direct you to its location.

Step 5 Add the locations of any places you want to visit to your map.

  • For instance, if you’ve searched for “Golden Gate Bridge,” there will be a white box that offers some information on the location, and even a rating from other users. Click on the “Add to map” button to send it to your saved locations.

Step 6 Add descriptions to your saved locations.

  • For example, you might fill in the description to the “Golden Gate Bridge” box with something like, “Spend at least 1 hour here—must-see location.”

Step 7 Color-code your locations for convenience.

  • You might consider changing the colors of your pins to match how important each location is to your trip. For example, must-see locations could be red pins, your housing spots could be green pins, and optional places to visit could remain as blue pins.

Creating an Itinerary and Planning Routes

Step 1 Organize your selected places with the “layers” function.

  • For example, you might have a layer titled “Places to see,” one titled “Places to eat,” and one titled “Places to sleep.” You can then put sightseeing destinations, restaurants, and hotels you want to stay at in their respective layers.

Step 2 Plan your travel routes using your Google Map.

  • You can add more than one location to a single route. For example, if you wanted to plot a route from Big Sur to the Golden Gate Bridge, and then to Palo Alto, you can add all three locations to your route layer and create a multi-stop path. [11] X Research source
  • By clicking on the three dots next to the layer with your travel route, then selecting “Step-by-step directions,” My Maps will create a set of directions for your travel. Handy!

Step 3 Use your map to create a daily schedule.

  • For example, by using My Maps, you might notice that seeing the Golden Gate Bridge, walking around San Francisco, and eating at a restaurant in Berkeley are close enough to all be doable in one day, while visiting Big Sur might be better saved for another afternoon. My Maps can help you plan out the most efficient trip possible, so you can enjoy your travels even more.

Step 4 Use the “Share” option to loop your friends in on travel plans.

  • When sharing your map, you can also choose the option that allows others to edit the map as well. With this option selected, your friends can pick places that they’re interested in as well, so you can have them all on the same document. [13] X Research source

Step 5 Print your map for offline use.

  • Although My Maps can’t be viewed offline, you can download an offline map of any areas you’re interested in on your phone. Using the Google Maps app, type in a location into the search bar, tap the name of the location, then navigate to the option “Download offline map.” [15] X Research source

Before you can start saving your trips in Google Maps, you need to have access to the application. Google Maps is available on various platforms, including smartphones, tablets, and desktop browsers.

If you are using a smartphone or tablet, you can download the Google Maps app from the App Store (iOS) or Google Play Store (Android) and install it on your device. Once installed, simply open the app and sign in with your Google account to gain access to all the features.

If you prefer using Google Maps on your computer, you can access it through your web browser. Open your preferred browser and navigate to the Google Maps website (maps.google.com). Again, make sure you are signed in to your Google account to enjoy the full functionality of the platform.

Now that you are logged in, you have full access to the various features of Google Maps, including the ability to save and customize your trips.

Before we move on to creating and saving your trip, it’s important to note that Google Maps requires an internet connection to function properly. While you can view saved trips offline, any modifications or updates to the trip will require an active internet connection.

Now that you are familiar with accessing Google Maps, let’s move on to the next step: creating a trip.

Step 2: Starting a Trip

Once you’re logged into Google Maps, starting a trip is a straightforward process. You can begin by following these simple steps:

  • Open Google Maps on your preferred device or browser.
  • In the search bar, enter the destination or starting point of your trip. You can type in the name of a specific location, an address, or even a landmark.
  • Google Maps will then display the location on the map and provide you with detailed information, such as the address, reviews, and photos.
  • If the location is correct, click on the “Directions” button, usually indicated by an arrow icon.
  • Next, choose the mode of transportation for your trip, such as driving, walking, or public transit. You can also specify any additional options, such as avoiding tolls or highways.
  • Once you have selected the desired options, Google Maps will calculate the route and display it on the map. You will also see the estimated travel time and distance to your destination.
  • If you want to add more destinations to your trip, click on the “+” button next to the destination field and repeat the process of entering a location and selecting the mode of transport.
  • Continue adding destinations until your trip is fully planned.
  • As you add destinations, Google Maps will automatically optimize the route to ensure the most efficient travel sequence.

Now that you have started your trip and added destinations, you can proceed to the next step: customizing the trip to suit your preferences.

Step 3: Adding Destinations

Adding destinations to your trip in Google Maps allows you to create a multi-stop itinerary that suits your preferences. Here’s how to add destinations to your trip:

  • With your trip already initiated in Google Maps, look for the “+” button located next to the destination field.
  • Click on the “+” button to bring up the search bar.
  • Enter the name of the next destination you want to add to your trip. You can search for specific addresses, landmarks, or even categories of places like restaurants or attractions.
  • Google Maps will display a list of matching results based on your search query. Click on the correct destination from the list.
  • The chosen destination will be added to your trip, and you will see it displayed on the map. The route will automatically update to include the newly added destination.
  • If you want to add more destinations, repeat the previous steps by clicking on the “+” button again and entering the desired locations.
  • As you add more destinations, Google Maps will optimize the route to provide you with the most efficient travel sequence.
  • If at any point you want to remove a destination, click on the “X” button located next to it in the destination list.
  • Continue adding and removing destinations until you are satisfied with your trip itinerary.

By adding destinations to your trip, you can customize your journey and ensure that you visit all the places you desire. Whether you’re planning a sightseeing tour or mapping out the best restaurants to try, Google Maps makes it easy to create a comprehensive itinerary.

Once you have added all the desired destinations, you can proceed to the next step: customizing the trip to suit your preferences.

Step 4: Customizing the Trip

After adding destinations to your trip in Google Maps, you have the flexibility to customize it according to your preferences. Here are some ways you can customize your trip:

  • Reordering Destinations: If you want to change the order of your destinations, simply click and drag the destination markers on the map to rearrange them. This allows you to optimize the route based on your preferences or any time constraints you may have.
  • Adding Waypoints: Along with your main destinations, you can also add waypoints to your trip. Waypoints are additional stops that you want to make along the route, such as rest stops, scenic viewpoints, or places of interest. To add a waypoint, click on the route between two destinations and select “Add a stop.”
  • Modifying Transportation Options: If you initially chose a specific mode of transportation for your trip but want to make changes, you can easily do so. On the trip overview screen, click on the mode of transportation (e.g. Driving) and select a different option like walking or public transit.
  • Exploring Alternatives: Google Maps provides alternative routes for your trip. To view these options, click on the “Route options” button on the trip overview screen. This can be helpful if you want to consider different routes based on factors like traffic, scenic routes, or avoiding tolls.
  • Adding Notes and Labels: Google Maps also allows you to add notes and labels to your trip. These can be useful for adding specific instructions, reminders, or any important information you want to remember about each destination.
  • Checking Traffic Conditions: Before starting your trip, it’s a good idea to check the current traffic conditions. Google Maps provides real-time traffic updates, which can help you anticipate delays and make necessary adjustments to your route.

By customizing your trip, you can ensure that it aligns perfectly with your needs and preferences. Whether you want to optimize the route, add additional stops, or make specific notes, Google Maps offers a variety of options to make your trip truly personalized.

After customizing your trip, it’s time to save it so that you can access it later or share it with others. Let’s move on to the next step: saving the trip.

Step 5: Saving the Trip

After creating and customizing your trip in Google Maps, it’s essential to save it so that you can access it at any time. Saving the trip allows you to view, modify, and share it without the need to recreate the itinerary from scratch. Here’s how to save your trip:

  • On the trip overview screen, make sure all the destinations and customizations are as desired.
  • Click on the three vertical dots located in the top-right corner of the screen. This will open a dropdown menu of options.
  • From the dropdown menu, select the “Save trip” option.
  • You will be prompted to provide a name for your trip. Enter a descriptive title that helps you easily identify the itinerary.
  • Click on the “Save” button.

Once you save your trip, it will be added to your list of saved trips in Google Maps. This allows you to access it whenever you need it, whether you’re using the app on your smartphone or tablet or accessing Google Maps on your computer through a web browser.

Remember that saving the trip also synchronizes it with your Google account, ensuring that it is accessible across devices. This means that any modifications or updates you make to the trip from one device will be reflected on all other devices connected to your Google account.

In addition to saving the trip for your personal use, Google Maps also allows you to share the trip with others. This can be useful when planning a trip with friends, family, or colleagues. To share your saved trip, follow these steps:

  • Open the saved trip from your list of saved trips in Google Maps.
  • Click on the “Share trip” button, usually indicated by a share icon.
  • Choose the desired method of sharing, such as email, messaging apps, or social media.
  • Enter the recipient’s email address or select the desired contact to share the trip with.
  • Send the invitation to share the trip.

By saving and sharing your trip in Google Maps, you can easily collaborate with others, receive feedback, and coordinate your travel plans.

Now that you know how to save your trip, let’s move on to the final step: accessing your saved trips in Google Maps.

Step 6: Accessing Saved Trips

Once you have saved your trips in Google Maps, accessing them is a breeze. You can easily retrieve your saved trips on any device using the following steps:

  • Launch the Google Maps app on your smartphone or tablet, or open Google Maps in your web browser on your computer.
  • Sign in to your Google account if you haven’t already done so.
  • In the app, tap on the “Menu” button (usually represented by three horizontal lines) in the top-left corner of the screen. On the website, look for the menu icon (three horizontal lines) in the top-left corner of the screen as well.
  • From the menu, select the “Your places” option.
  • Tap on “Saved” to access your list of saved items, including your saved trips.
  • You will see a list of all your saved trips. Tap on the trip you want to open.
  • The selected trip will open, displaying the itinerary, customizations, and any added notes or labels.

When accessing Google Maps on a computer, you can follow a similar process:

  • Go to the Google Maps website and sign in to your Google account if you’re not already signed in.
  • Click on the menu icon (three horizontal lines) in the top-left corner of the screen.
  • Select the “Your places” option from the menu.
  • Click on “Saved” to access your list of saved items, including your saved trips.
  • You will see a list of your saved trips. Click on the trip you want to open.

By following these steps, you can easily access and view your saved trips in Google Maps whenever you need them. This is especially useful when you’re on the go and need quick access to directions, information, and your customized itinerary.

Remember that any modifications or updates you make to the trip, whether it’s reordering destinations or adding new stops, will be automatically saved and synchronized across all your devices connected to your Google account.

Now that you know how to access your saved trips, you can confidently plan and navigate your future travels with ease using Google Maps.

Google Maps is a powerful tool for not only navigating but also planning and organizing your trips. By following the steps outlined in this guide, you can save and customize your trips in Google Maps, ensuring a smooth and organized travel experience.

Starting a trip is as simple as entering your destination and selecting the mode of transportation. From there, you can add multiple destinations, customize the route, and even include waypoints for additional stops along the way.

Once you’ve created your trip, it’s important to save it so that you can easily access it later or share it with others. Saving a trip allows you to review and modify the itinerary whenever needed.

Accessing your saved trips is also hassle-free, whether you’re using the Google Maps app on your smartphone or tablet or accessing it through a web browser on your computer. Everything is synchronized across devices, ensuring that you have your trip details readily available no matter where you are.

With Google Maps, you can rely on accurate and up-to-date information, including real-time traffic updates, recommended routes, and even information about nearby attractions, restaurants, and hotels.

Did You Make Your Connecting Flight? You May Have A.I. to Thank.

Airlines are using artificial intelligence to save fuel, keep customers informed and hold connecting flights for delayed passengers. Here’s what to expect.

A map of the contiguous United States marked with airline routes between hubs like Miami, Boston, New York and Los Angeles, with red, orange, green, blue, red and purple areas that look like storm systems on a radar map. A hand is holding up a cellphone that shows the seating chart of a plane. A message on the screen reads, “JFK-LAX: Holding for Delayed Passengers. On-Time Arrival Projected” and “Gate 10, Seat 5A.”

By Julie Weed

Last month in Chicago, a United Airlines flight to London was ready to depart, but it was still waiting for 13 passengers connecting from Costa Rica. The airline projected they’d miss the flight by seven minutes. Under normal circumstances, they’d all be scrambling to rebook.

But thanks to a new artificial-intelligence-powered tool called ConnectionSaver, the jet was able to wait for them — their checked bags, too — and still arrive in London on time. The system also sent text messages to the late-arriving passengers and the people on the waiting jet to explain what was happening.

A.I. still might not be able to find space for your carry-on, but it could help put an end to the 40-gate dash — sprinting to catch your connecting flight before the door slams shut — as well as other common travel headaches.

It’s not just United. Alaska Airlines , American Airlines and others have been working to develop new A.I. capabilities that could make flying easier for passengers. The carriers are also using the technology to reduce costs and streamline operations, including saving fuel, said Helane Becker, an airline industry analyst for the investment bank TD Cowen . Although many of the airlines are developing their programs independently, a successful innovation by any carrier could possibly become an industry standard.

A.I. is poised to change almost every aspect of the customer flying experience, from baggage tracking to personalized in-flight entertainment, said Jitender Mohan, who works with travel and hospitality clients at the technology consulting company WNS .

Saving fuel and frustration

A.I. has been helping Alaska Airlines dispatchers plan more efficient routes since 2021. “It’s like Google maps, but in the air,” explained Vikram Baskaran, vice president for information technology services at the carrier.

Two hours before a flight, the system reviews weather conditions, any airspace that will be closed, and all commercial and private flight plans registered with the Federal Aviation Administration, to suggest the most efficient route. The A.I. takes in “an amount of information no human brain could process,” said Pasha Saleh, the corporate development director and a pilot for Alaska.

In 2023, about 25 percent of Alaska flights used this system to shave a few minutes off flight times. Those efficiencies added up to about 41,000 minutes of flying time and half a million gallons of fuel saved, Mr. Baskaran said.

On the ground, American Airlines and others are working on an A.I.-powered system American calls Smart Gating — sending arriving aircraft to the nearest available gate with the shortest taxiing time, and if the scheduled arrival gate is in use, quickly determining the best alternate gate. All this could mean fewer frustrating minutes spent waiting on the tarmac.

American introduced Smart Gating at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport in 2021 and now employs it at six airports, including Chicago O’Hare and Miami International. The airline estimates it saves 17 hours a day in taxi time and 1.4 million gallons of jet fuel a year.

Mr. Mohan said that using A.I. as a virtual parking attendant could save up to 20 percent of taxiing time, with the highest benefits seen at the largest airports.

Faster and better customer service

Rapidly evolving generative A.I. — think ChatGPT — is helping airlines communicate with passengers better. At United, a companywide challenge last year yielded a plan to make texts sent to fliers more specific about what’s causing delays. Passengers can get frustrated when flights are delayed with no explanation, said Jason Birnbaum, United’s chief information officer.

But tracking the details required, composing an appropriate message and sending it to the right people for 5,000 flights a day would be too much for the staff to handle, Mr. Birnbaum said. Generative A.I. can process all that data and create messages tailored to conditions. For example, passengers booked on a January United flight from San Francisco to Tucson received this text message, along with a new departure time and an apology: “Your inbound aircraft is arriving late due to airport runway construction in San Francisco that limited the number of arrivals and departures for all airlines earlier.”

Having a more detailed explanation can calm travelers’ nerves. Jamie Larounis, a travel industry analyst who flies about 150,000 miles a year, recalled receiving text messages last summer explaining that a storm and a related crew-scheduling problem had delayed his flight from Chicago. “Getting a specific reason for the delay made me feel like the airline had things under control,” he said.

Generative A.I. is also good at summarizing text, making it a powerful tool for wading through emails. Last year, Alaska was among the carriers that began using A.I. to handle customer messages more efficiently. The airline’s system “reads” each email and summarizes the issues raised.

“We used to read first in first out, handling the requests as they came in,” said Mr. Baskaran, but now the system helps prioritize emails. For example, an urgent request involving an upcoming flight may take precedence over a complaint about a past one.

The system also helps a human agent decide how to respond, such as offering the customer a voucher, and it may draft an initial written response. “The person makes the decision, but it’s streamlined,” Mr. Baskaran said.

For all the benefits A.I. promises to airlines and passengers, the technology still has some shortcomings. For one, it doesn’t always deliver accurate information. In 2022, an Air Canada chatbot incorrectly promised a traveler that if he booked a full-fare flight to a relative’s funeral, he could receive a bereavement fare after the fact. When he filed a small-claims case, Air Canada tried to argue that the bot was its own separate entity, “responsible for its own actions,” but a tribunal found Air Canada responsible and ordered it to pay about $800 in damages and fees.

Still, as A.I. develops and airlines race to find more uses for it, passengers could see even more benefits. “As a customer and a business person, this is one of the biggest technology disruptions in the last five to eight years,” Mr. Mohan said.

An earlier version of this article, in a quotation from Vikram Baskaran, vice president for information technology services at Alaska Airlines, misstated the number of gallons of fuel an artificial-intelligence-powered planning system saved the airline in 2023. It was half a million, not half a billion.

I used to be a public school teacher. Now I work as a 'middleman' government contractor and can travel when I want to.

  • Wes Fisher worked as a teacher when he signed his first government contract in 2020.
  • Fisher spends about an hour a day managing his contracts — he now has 14.
  • The ability to work remotely has given him the opportunity to travel and work on personal projects.

Insider Today

This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Wes Fisher, a 35-year-old government contractor. This essay has been edited for length and clarity. Business Insider verified his identity, contracts, and earnings.

I used to be a special-ed teacher at a public school in Ohio, making around $50,000 annually. I worked with students who faced a wide range of challenges and it was tough work.

During the pandemic, I decided I would use my stimulus check to invest in a course. I looked into Amazon, crypto, day trading, and Airbnb.

One day, I stumbled upon someone in a podcast interview talking about working as a "middleman" for the government. The rest is history.

Working as a middleman

There are different kinds of roles involved in government contracting . I work as a middleman, which means I'm the prime contractor and I bid on the opportunity. To do so, I go to sam.gov and register my company.

The government then gives me an identifier called a cage code, which is attached to my company. Then I bid on the contracts myself by submitting a proposal, which explains how much I plan to charge and how I will do the work.

If I win an opportunity, I hire subcontractors to do the work.

For example, if I were to get a contract for chimney cleaning, I would partner with a professional chimney cleaning company. They would do the work and I would manage the deal.

The middleman strategy works because the government is looking for value-added services . A company may be great at what they do, but it may not know about government opportunities or how the bidding process works. My role is to get in touch with companies that can do the job and then make sure they complete it.

I manage the team's schedule, invoice their hours, and do the administrative tasks.

People are attracted to this job because it can be done here at my house with my computer. I have contracts in California, Nevada, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Florida and Louisiana. I have a contract in Louisiana for pest control, but I'm not the one setting up the traps.

Related stories

I don't physically do it, but I add the value of coordinating the deal and making sure the job gets done.

I've signed 14 contracts

I've signed 14 contracts since I started in 2020 and I have five active contracts that I'm running and getting paid for. I've signed contracts in all kinds of sectors, including landscaping, HVAC cleaning, and construction.

My first contract was for Catholic services in the federal prison in California. I'm not Catholic and I don't live in California, but I won a five-year contract for Catholic services.

So I found a chaplain to do the job. I've only spoken to him on the phone and I don't even know what he looks like. But when he goes to that prison, I get paid.

Eventually, I signed a five-year contract to lease fleet vehicles to Forest Services in Utah, in which the government could request up to $1 million in vehicle orders.

As a pre-approved vendor for this contract, the government could choose my company to carry out the orders over a five-year period and pay up to $1 million. I get paid in increments depending on the length of my contracts and I also have to pay my subcontractors — so I don't get a $1 million paycheck from that contract.

But overall, I'm managing the deals from afar and made a profit of around $75,000 last year from government contracting without doing the physical work.

I put in about an hour of work on government contracting every day

I spend about an hour a day on government contracting. I'm not the one cutting the grass, so there's nothing for me to do on a day-to-day basis with my contracts.

I have a team member that I work with now as well, and we work on finding opportunities, getting quotes, and submitting proposals. I submit one proposal a day to the federal government because it's not about getting rich tomorrow, it's about securing as many contracts as possible.

It takes me about two or three minutes to find 10 opportunities available, then about 10 minutes to look up companies that do the job, and then I spend the rest of the hour calling them and seeing who would be interested and available for the job.

I'm not always submitting the proposal that same day, but I'm in a continuous cycle of identifying opportunities and I always have companies in the pipeline for proposals.

The mobility freedom has been a game changer

The biggest difference with my lifestyle now is I can stay at home and make more money while doing so. That's a level of freedom I never had before.

Now that I've won multiple contracts, I also have time to work on other personal projects. Since starting this work, I've been able to create my own online course in government contracting.

The lifestyle change has given me the opportunity to travel at my own discretion. Dubai and Jamaica were my biggest highlights last year.

I recently went on a spontaneous train ride from Chicago to San Francisco. My friend texted me and asked me if I wanted to go, and I thought, why not? I'm currently on a trip in Panama.

How to use Delta Companion Certificates to save hundreds of dollars on your next flight with your Plus-One

and save trip

Terms apply to American Express benefits and offers. Enrollment may be required for select American Express benefits and offers. Visit americanexpress.com to learn more.

Premium airline credit cards bestow some eye-popping perks to cardholders to ensure they reserve an honored spot in their wallet for these cards—and are willing to pay the typically expensive annual fee. One of the most exclusive and rewarding benefits is a companion certificate. We’re going to walk you through the Delta Companion Certificate today.

If you have an eligible co-branded Delta credit card that offers this perk, it can essentially wipe out the cost of your Plus-One’s ticket so you only have to pay the taxes and fees. When used strategically, it can save you a significant amount and help you enjoy your travels more.

What are Delta Companion Certificates?

A companion certificate is a benefit offered by some co-branded airline credit cards. Generally, it allows you to purchase one ticket for yourself at full price and get a second one (with certain restrictions) for your travel buddy on the same itinerary while paying just taxes and fees.

Depending on factors such as routes and dates, this perk could potentially save you hundreds of dollars on that second ticket. Some well-known companion certificates in the travel credit card space include the Southwest Companion Pass , the Alaska’s Famous Companion Fare from Alaska Airlines, and of course, the Delta Companion Certificate.

Delta offers two different companion certificates through four of its premium American Express cards—two on the personal side and two on the business side. These are as follows:

  • Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card ($650 annual fee)
  • Delta SkyMiles® Reserve Business American Express Card ($650 annual fee)
  • Delta SkyMiles® Platinum American Express Card ($350 annual fee)
  • Delta SkyMiles® Platinum Business American Express Card ($350 annual fee)

As these are premium cards, they all charge expensive annual fees. But along with the yearly companion pass, these cards offer many other perks (such as a free checked bag) that may help wipe out the cost of the annual fee for frequent Delta flyers who can maximize the benefits.

While both companion certificates are used in the same way, the one offered on the SkyMiles Platinum and SkyMiles Platinum Business cards is more restrictive and can only be used when flying main cabin. By contrast, the certificate that comes with Reserve and Reserve Business cards has no restrictions when it comes to the class of service you’re booking, allowing you to choose which cabin you’d like to fly, including first class.

How to get Delta Companion Certificates

The only way to have access to a Delta Companion Certificate is by holding any of the four premium American Express cards that include the annual certificate as cardholder perk.

Get a Delta Companion Certificate for less money

Delta SkyMiles Platinum or Platinum Business American Express cardholders earn a certificate that’s good for a main cabin, round-trip flight to a domestic, Caribbean or Central American destination each year after renewal of their card.

You’ll pay $350 a year for the personal card and the same $350 a year for the business card, so this is the most affordable path to a Delta Companion Certificate.

Debating if a SkyMiles Platinum might be the card for you? Here’s our guidance on how to analyze whether the Delta SkyMiles Platinum is worth it or not.

Get a Delta Companion Certificate good for first class

Delta SkyMiles Reserve or Reserve Business American Express cardholders receive the most valuable of certificates, allowing them to redeem for a first class, Comfort+ or main cabin round-trip flight to a domestic, Caribbean or Central American destination each year after renewal of their card. The personal card is $650 per year and the business card is also $650.

However, while the price tag might give you sticker shock, note that these cards also come with coveted Delta Sky Club access (terms apply). Frequent travelers loyal to Delta probably won’t find another card that can match these two in terms of luxury perks. If you’re on the fence, take a look at our guide on deciding whether the Delta SkyMiles Reserve is worth it for your situation.

How much taxes and fees will cost

Regardless of which card you have, your companion certificate lets you get your ticket at full price—and, for the friend or family member traveling with you, pay only the taxes and fees. For domestic itineraries, you can expect to pay up to $80 round trip, and for international ones, the taxes and fees can amount to up to $250 for a round-trip flight.

  • Companion certificate good for a round trip domestic, Caribbean or Central American Main Cabin flight each year upon renewal of your card
  • 15% Discount on Award Tickets on Delta Flights
  • Limited travel insurance options
  • Companion pass comes with limitations
  • Statement credits toward Delta Stays, Resy and rideshare purchases
  • Consumer protections including cell phone insurance, extended warranty, and purchase protection

How much are Delta Companion Certificates worth?

Companion certificates do not have a set dollar value associated with them and instead, the value you get varies depending on the destination you use them for and the dates—effectively making them a great tool to lower your travel costs to expensive destinations, provided the certificates can be used for those specific flights.

For example, by using a companion certificate from the Delta SkyMiles Reserve Amex, you could (at the time of writing) book a flight from Los Angeles to New York City over New Years in first class for a cost just slightly higher than you would pay for two main cabin tickets if you weren’t using your companion certificate.

The takeaway

For cardholders who don’t see the steep annual fees from these premium Delta credit cards as a barrier to enjoying the benefits they confer, the companion certificate alone can potentially bring enough value to make it worthwhile to carry one of these cards. The money you save on your travel buddy’s airline ticket can likely offset the annual fee if you’re savvy about how you redeem your certificate, making any other credits and benefits on your card an overall win.

Frequently asked questions

Can i redeem miles for my ticket when using a companion certificate.

No, when using a companion certificate, you must pay for your own ticket with your American Express card. You will not be able to redeem Delta SkyMiles to cover your ticket in this case.

Do Delta Companion Certificates expire?

Yes. Your companion certificate will have an expiration date on it. You must both book and complete your trip by the expiration date listed.

Can I use my companion certificate for first class flights?

Depending on the Delta credit card you have, you will be able to leverage these companion certificates for first class flights. If you hold the Delta SkyMiles Reserve or the Delta SkyMiles Reserve Business, your companion certificate will be good not just for main cabin but also first class and Comfort+, and you can redeem them for round-trip domestic, Caribbean or Central American flights.

But, if you have the Delta SkyMiles Platinum or the Delta SkyMiles Platinum Business, your companion certificates only allow for use in main cabin flights to the same destinations.

Do I earn miles or MQDs when using a Delta Companion Certificate?

Whoever is booked as the primary traveler—the one paying full price on the ticket—will accrue miles as they normally would. Their companion, however, will not have a mileage accruing ticket as they’re flying on an ineligible fare.

Can I use my Delta Companion Certificate for someone else?

Yes, you can gift the companion certificate, as you do not need to be the primary passenger—essentially, you book primary and companion tickets for two travelers who are not yourself.

Keep in mind the two passengers flying on this companion reservation have to be flying on the exact same flights for the same dates in order to use a companion certificate.

Loved the northern lights? Check out these phenomena next.

This weekend’s dramatic light displays are part of the many sights available in the United States and abroad.

and save trip

The night sky dazzled people across the United States and Europe on Friday evening as an extreme geomagnetic storm brought aurora displays not usually seen at lower latitudes — beautiful streaks of green, purple and pink lights.

Like the total solar eclipse in April, the aurora offered a chance for people to marvel at the natural world. The spectacular show could be repeated this weekend.

If you miss it, though, you can find awe in many of Earth’s other phenomena. From fleeting meteor showers to year-round beauty, here are some wonders to look for.

Lunar eclipses

Next year will see a total lunar eclipse on March 14, when the moon moves into Earth’s shadow. It gives the moon a very deep red hue , and all you need to see it is a clear sky.

A partial lunar eclipse will happen in September, less spectacular but also visible with the naked eye: Viewers will see “a little bite” taken out of the moon, and the moon will appear slightly darkened, said William Teets, director of the Dyer Observatory at Vanderbilt University.

Meteor showers

In mid-August, the Perseid meteor shower will peak , offering the year’s best chance to see dozens of meteors streaking through the sky, according to NASA.

The best viewing is in the pre-dawn hours, and the peak is predicted for Aug. 12, with up to 100 meteors per hour. Wait for the moon to set around 1 a.m. local time, then head to a dark location, recommended Robert Lunsford of the American Meteor Society. Peak time will be 3 to 5 a.m.

Enthusiasts should also circle their calendars for the Geminids shower in December 2025, which won’t be obscured by moonlight, Lunsford said, and the 2027 Perseids, when several hundred meteors an hour are predicted to streak across the sky.

Meteor showers, which happen annually, are among the “easiest things to observe and prepare for” because viewers only need clear weather and a dark area, Teets said.

“Find as dark a location as you can, put a blanket out on the ground and just lie back and take in as much of the sky as possible,” he said.

Parade of planets

Six planets will align June 3, giving viewers from Earth’s Northern Hemisphere an unusual chance to see them all at once.

Jupiter, Mercury, Mars, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune will line up in the pre-dawn sky. The first four will be clear to the naked eye, and all six will be visible through binoculars or a telescope, according to Astronomy magazine. The moon will also be visible between Uranus and Mars.

Bioluminescence

Light displays aren’t just for the skies — they can also been seen in the oceans when bioluminescent organisms light up and create an otherworldly glow. Sometimes bioluminescence is visible near the water’s surface, often triggered by waves, boats or other disturbances, according to the Smithsonian Institution.

Bioluminescence can’t be predicted, but travelers can try to witness spring and summer displays in spots throughout the world, such as California, Puerto Rico and Australia.

Other ways to find a glow: Visit the New Zealand glowworms at Waitomo Caves or catch the synchronous firefly displays in the Great Smoky Mountains .

Year-round wonders

Natural beauty is all around, and there are plenty of places where you can find a sense of awe anytime you want.

Visit a national or state park. Natural wonders are always available, from the Grand Canyon to Niagara Falls, the volcanoes of Hawaii to the geysers of Yellowstone. Many track seasonal sights, too, such as bird and butterfly migrations, Yosemite’s “ firefall ” and wildflower super blooms across western desert swaths.

Travel to see the northern lights. Though their appearance Friday in the lower latitudes was rare, aurora displays can reliably be seen in the Arctic Circle. Visitors chase the lights in Alaska and parts of Canada, Norway, Sweden, Finland and Iceland. The lights can also sometimes be spotted in northern contiguous U.S. states such as Maine , Michigan , Wisconsin and Minnesota .

Go stargazing. Search for stars anywhere away from bright city lights. Drive at least 45 or 60 minutes from a big city, or check out a designated Dark Sky place — there are 138 places in the United States , many in the Southwest, along with spots in the East, Midwest and West.

Bring a blanket, lie back and use your eyes, Teets recommended. In the summer and fall, the Milky Way will glow across the sky. Viewers can also use night-sky phone apps to learn constellations, and binoculars can help you scan the sky for star clusters and galaxies.

“It gives us a little way to take a break and just enjoy what the universe has out there for us,” Teets said. “It just inspires this sense of awe and wonder.”
