Andorians hail from the Alpha Quadrant, from the moon of Andor which is the center of their Empire. Culturally Andorians are militaristic and consider it a great honor to serve in the Imperial Guard. While tending towards violence, they nonetheless also place great value on family.

Good Andorian names build on that reverence for family, and incorporate a surname that reflects the Andorian’s clan, as well as a forename or given name. These names sometimes incorporate a signifier communicating the individual’s gender as well.

The origin and significance of andorian names in star trek.

The Andorians are a humanoid species in the Star Trek universe, known for their blue skin and antennae. The naming conventions of Andorians are deeply rooted in their culture and history. Andorian names often reflect the character's personality, role, or status within their society. They typically consist of a single syllable, followed by a consonant and vowel sequence. This unique pattern gives Andorian names their distinct sound and feel.

Characteristics of Andorian Names

Andorian names are typically short, with a strong emphasis on hard consonants and vowels. They often end in 'n' or 's' and rarely contain more than two syllables. Despite their simplicity, Andorian names carry a sense of dignity and strength, reflecting the Andorians' warrior culture. While the names are gender-neutral, certain endings may be more common for males or females.

Biology [ ]

The blue hue of the species was the result of a high concentration of cobalt in the hemoglobin of their red corpuscles. They were generally stronger as well as hardier than other races except when compared to the Vulcans . This was due to the greater gravity, thinner air and harsher climate of the Andorian home world. ( FASA RPG module : The Federation ) While most Andorian were the typical blue race there was also a smaller sub-species known as the Aenar , who were white-skinned, blind, and possessed very powerful telepathic abilities. The Andorians covered most of their world, and regarded the Aenar as nothing more than myths until the early 22nd century , when they re-established contact with the sub-terrestrial Aenar, who lived in the arctic wastelands of the extreme north and numbered only in the thousands. ( ENT episode : " The Aenar ")

The Andorian species was unique in that it was composed of four sexes , known in Andorii , the primary Andorian language, as chans , thaans , zhens , and shens . Chans and thaans were roughly comparable in reproductive function and appearance to the male sex, while the latter two were roughly comparable to the female sex. ( TNG episode : " Data's Day ", DS9 novel : Andor: Paradigm , et al.)

Andorians were blue-skinned humanoids , similar in build to the average Human . Their homeworld featured predominantly icy environments with a thin, ozone -rich atmosphere so they evolved to live in cooler conditions, but were capable of living in a wide range of climates. One adaptation the species featured was a redundant circulatory system which allowed them to survive comfortably in their environmental conditions. ( Decipher RPG module : Aliens ; ENT episode : " The Aenar ")

Andorians efficiently metabolized nutrients and regulated body heat. However, compared to Humans, Andorian metabolisms tended to be higher, so they would tire more quickly when engaged in strenuous activities for prolonged periods. ( Decipher RPG module : Aliens ; ENT episode : " United ") The Andorian body had a limited exoskeleton , as well as other insectoid characteristics. Andorians ranged in height from about 1.7 to 2.2 meters tall, with the average male at about 2.3 meters, and a female at 1.8 meters. The average weight for a male was 70 kilograms, and a female 45 kg. ( ST reference : Star Fleet Medical Reference Manual ; Decipher RPG module : Aliens )

The average body temperature of an Andorian was 42 °C, pulse rate was 110, and respiration of 28. The average life expectancy for a male Andorian was 129 years, while the average for a female was 134. ( ST reference : Star Fleet Medical Reference Manual )

Reproduction [ ]

The Andorian species was uniquely composed of four sexes. For a long time this was the source of a population crisis for the Andorian people as they struggled to maintain replacement rates for the species.

From an initial population of 3 billion, there were only 90 million Andorians by 2376 . ( DS9 novel : Andor: Paradigm )

Antennae [ ]

Andorian brain diagram

Diagram of the Andorian Brain

One of the most noted features Andorians had were their antennae . They could obtain a great deal of sensory information through their continually waving antennae - they could detect electrical fields, changes in air density and temperature and sub-sonic sounds. ( DS9 novel : Avatar, Book One ; Decipher RPG module : Aliens ) Their antennae were remarkably sensitive organs that gave them a sonar-like detection abilities that were similar to that of Terran bats. Due to this ability, it was very difficult to sneak up or even elude an Andorian - even in total darkness. There was a lesser desirable characteristic of these antennae which was their sensitivity to pain. A hit to them gave an Andorian as much pain as a male Human got by being hit in the groin. In Starfleet , Andorian marine personnel were often equipped with specially designed helmets. ( FASA RPG module : The Federation )

However the antennae were not particularly reliable sensory organs as they could be thrown by picking up strong emotions through surges in adrenaline or teptaline or even detecting overheating equipment. When an Andorian concentrated they could use their antennae to single out bioelectric signals nearby. ( DS9 novel : Avatar, Book One )

The antennae contained some brain tissue at their base, and most damage could be done safely above this area. If a portion of antennae were cut off, it would take several months to grow back, during which time the Andorian would suffer loss of balance, among other symptoms. ( ST reference : Star Fleet Medical Reference Manual ; ENT episode : " United ")

Culture [ ]

Andorians had a genetic predisposition toward violent behavior. Within their own society life was extremely structured which helped tame their tempers. In the wider galaxy many Andorians bottled up their rage, managing to contain it in public but sometime having violent outbursts in private. Compared to many other species Andorians excelled under pressure. Their bio-chemical reactions induced them either to fight or increase their sensory input levels, which led to them having great abilities at analysis and reasoning. ( DS9 novels : Avatar, Book One , Avatar, Book Two )

To outsiders, Andorian attitudes and speech may have seemed humble and timid, but in reality their posture often owed to the fact that they were moving to give their antennae a better "view" of surrounding occurrences. Their speech was soft and sibilant due to their differing hearing apparatus, and some undertones of their communication were not immediately perceptible to other races and cultures . This predilection towards sensing vibration and pitch led to a cultural preoccupation with music , which was the original basis of Andorian language . The standard Andorian sidearm, the flabbjellah , doubled as a musical instrument. A well-known genre of their music to offworlders is their Andorian "Blues". (Production notes for ST: TMP; TOS comic : " Who's Who in Star Trek, Issue 1 ", TNG episode : " Unification ")

Duels regarding honor were dealt with through the Ushaan trial of combat, which has many rules. ( ENT episode : " United ")

Andorian society had little need for lawyers, with those who occupied such a profession being executed at least a thousand years before the Andorian Empire joined the Federation. ( TOS novel : Memory Prime )

Andorians seemed to have a belief that within society there was a need for productive members and that those that suffered from disabilities such as being blind were a burden. Such individuals were little cared-for and were only tolerated for what few capabilities they did have, such as breeding. ( TNG novel : Eye of the Beholder )

The Andorians are famous for their war colleges and similar military establishments. ( TNG video game : Birth of the Federation )

Beliefs [ ]

Andorian beliefs included a deity called Uzaveh the Infinite. ( DS9 novel : Andor: Paradigm ; ENT novel : The Good That Men Do )

This mythological being's "image" (or, at least, the combined interpretation of " The One " and Sybok 's collective minds) is in a make-up screen test from a deleted scene of " Star Trek V: The Final Frontier ".

Andorian marriages were set in groups of four due to their unique four-gendered biology. This arrangement affected Andorians through the early years of their lives. Andorians' mating bondgroups were arranged at a young age in preparation for the shelthreth and the conception of a child. Andorian society has, in recent centuries, become increasingly fixated on the necessity of honoring the bond and conceiving children. Andorian youths are encouraged to identify with the bond over their own individuality. ( DS9 novel : Andor: Paradigm , et al.) It was known that the birth of a child to the clan conscious Andorians meant that they considered such events almost sacred. ( FASA RPG module : Star Trek: The Next Generation Officer's Manual )

Because the window of fertility was so narrow in Andorians, marriage typically took place very early in adulthood; twenty-three was considered quite old for an Andorian not to be married. ( DS9 novel : Avatar, Book One )

Rituals [ ]

  • Rite of Kanlee

Recreation [ ]

  • Kochek • Andorian blues

Nutrition [ ]

Most Andorian foods are considered edible to Humans, and vice-versa. However, chocolate-or at least Argelian chocolate-is a poison to Andorians. ( DS9 novel : Time's Enemy )

Like most Humanoid species, the Andorians enjoy the intoxicating effects of alcohol . By far, the most popular variety of Andorian alcohol, both among Andorians themselves and their trading partners, is their ale. Andorian ale is produced in vast quantities on Andoria and offworld colonies like Syrinx III , and is one of the Andorian Empire's primary exports. Andorian ale is colored blue, with most varieties appearing somewhat translucent. It is similar in appearance to Romulan ale , although it is not as potent. That said, it has considerably higher alcohol content than Human ales; seeing as Andorians are no more resistant to the effects of alcohol than Humans, Andorian ale is usually served in small glasses (above). A particular variety of the drink, chemically enhanced to produce a luminous effect, is known as "glow-ale". Other alcoholic drinks include Gredlahr , which is similar to Terran rum only sweeter, and the "Andorian Sunset" cocktail, which is created from Andorian ingredients but was probably invented by Humans. The cocktail is purple in color, resembling a genuine Andorian sunset. Popular non-alcohol beverages among Andorians include "citrus drinks" made from the juice of Yutann, an equivalent to the citrus fruits of Earth. These drinks are known for their strong odor, often unpleasant to non-Andorians. According to the Ferengi Nog , they smell like a combination of lemon oil and Terran goats . Faridd is a carbonated soda-like beverage. Srjula is a nutritious formula served to infants and young children, although it cannot, of course, compare to Zhiassa , the Zhavey ’s milk . Katheka is an Andorian stimulant beverage roughly analogous to Earth coffee . An Andorian equivalent to tea is Fridd , which is often served ice-cold; you drink it as it thaws.

History [ ]

It was the migration of early Andorian tribal clans to the the more temperate latitudes that caused the race to become violent yet efficient warriors. In the northern regions of their home world which were warmer, the Andorians found an abundance of food and learnt rudimentary agriculture. However, the warmer climate that affected the clans made them more war-like which led to conflict as they began to fight with one another for land as well as food even though there was plenty to go around at the time. The northern tribes grew hungrier for war as a result and they moved south to fight the clans in those polar regions. Fortunately, the colder climate curbed the invaders violent tendencies and led to a logical resolution to the conflict. ( FASA RPG module : The Federation ) Around 30,000 years ago was the end of the Andorian stone age with the earliest recognizable Andorian cities being formed. ( Last Unicorn RPG module : All Our Yesterdays: The Time Travel Sourcebook )

Since that point forward, the Andorians were engaged in constant warfare which was fought between the many warlords of both the local as well as regional levels. Each battled one another either for political or military advantage but other motives were present such as personal grudges or even sheer pique. These campaigns often shed a great deal of Andorian blood and was another reason for the species rise as being warriors of virtue, courage, personal honor and skill at arms. This inter-species warfare ended by the year 1284 when the warlord Krotus arose and united the entire planet under his rule. It was during his reign that the Andorians entered their Industrial Age and achieved a level of peace as well as prosperity that was not known prior to that time. However, this period of their history came to a traumatic end when Krotus was assassinated by his own daughter in 1332 . Deprived of his strong leadership, the Andorians fractured politically until 1597 when a dispute between two local warlords for control over a trade route at the Tharan Mountains ignited the tribal conflicts once more. ( Decipher RPG module : Worlds )

This return to warfare was different from previous generations as this time the Andorian clan chieftains possessed advanced weaponry that was equal to that of Earth 's 20th century . What followed a tragic and horrific period in their racial history that was known as the Time of Lament which lasted nearly a century and almost decimated the Andorian population. The after effects of this age had a devastating blow to Andoria's economic and infrastructure with many parts of the world returning to a pre-industrial age level of technology. From this ruined world arose Lor'Vela who was 14 years of age in 1692 who attempted to persuade her people to step away from the endless cycle of conflict. Lor'Vela herself fell sick at this time as she was sickened by her peoples destructive ways after witnessing her mother a kethni leader defeat a rival. From her sickness, she received a vision of her world restored to the glory that it had achieved from the reign of Krotus. When Lor'Vela recovered, she challenged and killed her mother in a duel thus gaining control over her kethni. After that, she sent ambassadors to the other clans that survived the Time of Lament and summoned them to the city of Tarsk . At the Council of Tarsk , she managed to convince the other kethni to abandon their war-like ways against one another and to demonstrate her new goal for unity - she released all the captives that her kethni held and allowed them to return to their respective clans. This act stunned the others who were persuaded in joining Lor'Vela in this dramatic shift in their society and form a world government. This led to the destruction of all written records before this period in the 17th century in order to erase any knowledge of past misdeeds that might trigger further conflict. ( Decipher RPG module : Worlds )

Lor'Vela's actions would save her species who entered into their space age by the late 18th century and began colonizing space near their homeworld. This saw the development of 19 impulse ships that were filled with colonists in suspended animation and allowed them to colonize neighboring star systems. ( Decipher RPG module : Worlds ) During the 19th century , specifically in 1875 , the primitive space farring Andorians encountered a Romulan starship carrying Emperor Vitellus with his vessel around the planet Andor. Though technologically inferior. through sheer luck, the Romulan ships shields collapsed and the Andorians managed to seriously damage the ship with their primitive weaponry. The ship later crashed on Andor where most of the crew were killed leaving Emperor Vitellus the only survivor who died shortly afterwards. At the time, he had been carrying an artifact known to his people as the Bloodstone which was recovered by a Healer known as Telev . At the time, his homeworld had succumbed to a terrible plague and used the artifact he had recovered from Vitellus to save his people from further suffering. This artifact would later be known as "Telev's Bane" and became linked deeply with Andorian history. At some unknown point in the future, the Andorians made first contact with the Ferengi who threatened them with full scale slaughter unless they were provided with merchandise to trade. One of the items given to the Ferengi was Telev's Bane. ( TNG novel : The Devil's Heart )

On reference stardate -1/8703 , the Andorians tested their first prototypes of sub-light interstellar starships. This later culminated in the formation of the Andorian Empire in -1/9609 with the first colonization of another world by Andorian explorers. ( FASA RPG module : The Federation ) Many of the early exploration efforts were lost and their fates were never discovered though enough managed to survive to form colonies that would be recontacted in the future when Andoria developed the warp drive in 2118 . The already formed colonies served as a delicate chain of outposts that allowed the Andorians to further explore space and some of these Andorian worlds such as Cimera III made contact with other species such as Vulcanoid Rigellians . ( Decipher RPG module : Worlds ) The Andorians were one of the few races that had developed warp drive technology by themselves. This allowed them to establish the Andorian Star Clan , an interstellar empire that consisted of 13 planets. ( FASA RPG module : The Federation )

As the Andorian Empire expanded, they eventually came into contact with the remnants of the Vegan Tyranny on reference stardate 0/2204 with conflict erupting between the two. This war would rage across many years and ultimately ensure the downfall of the Tyranny who were unable to reform their empire and brought about them eventually disappearing from the galactic arena. ( FASA RPG module : The Federation ) They would later encounter the Vulcan 's who were distressed by the Andorians violent nature and attempted to guide the species. However, the Andorians reacted violently to the Vulcans efforts as they believed the Vulcans were both overtly as well as covertly hampering their attempts at becoming an interstellar power. This led to a number of skirmishes between the two races until the signing of the Tau Ceti Accords . ( Decipher RPG module : Aliens ) During First contact with the Terrans , the Andorians opened fired on the Human exploratory vessel, leading to hostilities that almost erupted into war. But before the Terran Alliance could mobilize, the Andorians received peaceful diplomatic overtures from the Vulcans ' peace mission. ( FASA RPG module : The Federation )

In 2155 , the Andorians along with the Tellarites were greatly disappointed in the Vulcan government not aiding the Coalition members against the aggressive actions of the Romulan Star Empire . Though ambassador Soval urged the Andorians and the Tellarites to remove themselves from the frontlines, the Andorians did not comply and instead attempted to aid the United Earth forces against the Romulans. It was only after the destruction of the Ka'Thalen Krotus and the battle of Threllvia IV did the Andorian government reconsider their options after learning that their vessels were particularly vulnerable to the Romulan remote hijacking weapon. ( ENT - The Romulan War novel : Beneath the Raptor's Wing )

During the 22nd century , Andorians armed their torpedo warheads with sirillium . ( ST - Destiny novel : Gods of Night ) Despite years of co-existence with the Tellarites, the Andorians were known to hold hostile relations with this founding Federation member race. Furthermore, the Andorian Engineering Corps was noted to service Federation member vessels. ( TOS comic : " Burden of Knowledge, Issue 3 ")

Popular male andorian names, popular female andorian names, what makes a good andorian name.

Crafting the perfect Andorian name necessitates a deep dive into the vast universe of Star Trek, as Andorians are a humanoid species recognized for their blue skin and antennae from there. A good Andorian name showcases the culture, sophistication, and inherent mystery of these alien beings. It’s typically composed of a personal name with a single syllable, followed by a family name that often denotes the profession or caste of the individual.

For instance, names like ‘Shran’ and ‘Thalen’ are a nod towards the tough, yet profound nature of these extraterrestrial warriors. Surnames such as ‘zh’Tharis’ or ‘cha’Shendo’ harness the exotic allure of the Andorian race while highlighting their hierarchy within society. So, if you’re exploring the final frontier for your next novel, game, or film, an Andorian name can transport your audience to a world far beyond the Milky Way – without the necessity of a warp drive!

The Dual Paths of the Orions and the Andorians

What brought these two different societies together?

Star Trek: Discovery

StarTrek.com

The third season premiere of Star Trek: Discovery , "That Hope Is You, Part 1," introduced viewers to the 32nd Century. This is the farthest point in the Star Trek timeline to be explored in a weekly series, and it’s proving to be a much more hostile environment for the crew of Discovery . The Federation is a shadow of its former self, and unexpected alliances have risen in its place. Case in point, the Orions and the Andorians formed a partnership on the Mercantile, which shocked Michael Burnham. In the past, neither race seemed like natural allies.

In Star Trek : The Original Series episode, " Journey to Babel ," the Orions tried to disrupt a diplomatic mission by murdering delegates. The Orion saboteur, Thelev, was also surgically altered to pass as an Andorian, and given a cover identity to hide his true mission and motives. Those actions suggest that the Orions and the Andorians have been at odds before. Certainly both races have had vastly different relationships with the Federation.

Four Andorians emerge with phaser rifles at their sides in 'The Andorian Incident'

"The Andorian Incident"

Star Trek: Enterprise shed some light on the Andorians’ place in universal politics in " The Andorian Incident ." Captain Archer and the Enterprise visited the Vulcan monastery on P'Jem just as the Andorians launched a mission to determine if it was secretly a station for Vulcans to spy on them. The Vulcans and Andorians shared a border, and they were mutually suspicious about each other. Archer defused the situation when he found proof that the Andorians had correctly guessed P’Jem’s true purpose.

Archer’s actions impressed Thy'lek Shran, which earned the captain Shran’s trust and friendship. Over the following years, Shran assisted Enterprise during the Xindi War and helped them save Earth from another interplanetary attack. In turn, Enterprise ’s crew deescalated the Cold War between the Andorians and Vulcans, and kept it from progressing into a full scale war. That ultimately led the Andorians to join the Vulcans and the humans as founding members of the Federation.

Thelev, an Orion posing as an Andorian, in order to infiltrate the Babel conference is exposed after the murder of a Tellarite ambassador and damage to his faux antennae, stands aboard the Enterprise bridge witnesses his ship on the viewfinder in 'Journey to Babel'

"Journey to Babel"

Conversely, the Orions had no desire to be a part of the Federation. In fact, they even worked to undermine the Federation’s goals. In “Journey To Babel,” Thelev’s murderous actions were meant to prevent the mineral rich planet, Coridan, from joining the Federation and coming under its protection. When that failed, Thelev and his compatriots on the Orion ship committed suicide rather than revealing further details after capture.

The Orions displayed a similar willingness to die to protect their illusion of neutrality in the Star Trek: The Animated Series episode, “The Pirates of Orion.” The pirate captain only relented when he realized that it would be pointless to sacrifice so many lives for a lie. That sentiment wasn’t shared by every member of the Orion race. As seen in the Enterprise episode “ Borderland ,” the Orion Syndicate attacked the ship and kidnapped nine crew members with the intention of selling them into slavery. Archer’s successful rescue attempt led him to be branded a criminal because he “stole” Orion property.

A member of the Orion Syndicate lifts T'Pol up as he attempts to auction her off as a slave in 'Borderland'

"Borderland"

By the 24th Century, the Orion Syndicate had become almost a dark mirror of the Federation. In Star Trek: Deep Space Nine , the Orion Syndicate included multiple races in their criminal operations that spanned the galaxy. Deep Space Nine ’s “ A Simple Investigation ,” " The Ascent ,” and “ Honor Among Thieves ” established the scope of the Syndicate’s reach as it adopted tactics similar to organized crime families on Earth.

Gender politics are also vastly different between the Orions and the Andorians. In Andorian society, women were considered equal to men. Both sexes fought alongside each other, and it was not uncommon for female Andorians to initiate a pairing with a male. By comparison, the first Orion women introduced in “The Cage” and “The Menagerie, Parts I & II" were described as slave girls who were irresistible to the opposite sex even outside of their own species.

Three Orion women uphold a ruse where their adversaries believe them to be slaves as a way to underestimate them. In 'Bound,' it's poor custom to discuss business before the entertainment

"Bound"

The pheromones released by Orion women were incredibly effective, and nearly caused the Enterprise to fall under enemy control in “ Bound .” The three women, Navaar, D'Nesh and Maras, masqueraded as slaves as a way to lull the male members of the crew into falling under their control. Orion women also rose in rank within the Syndicate itself, possibly in part due to their physiological abilities.

Despite the vast differences between the Andorians and the Orions, members of both species have served in Starfleet. The earliest example of this was The Animated Series episode, “Yesteryear,” when an Andorian named Thelin replaced Spock as the Enterprise ’s First Officer in an alternate timeline. Andorian ambassadors and admirals were also spotted in Star Trek: The Motion Picture and Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home .

Tendi goes full pirate on Star Trek: Lower Decks' 'Hear All, Trust Nothing'

"Hear All, Trust Nothing"

In the Kelvin timeline, an Orion cadet named Gaila attended Starfleet Academy alongside Kirk, Spock, and Uhura in Star Trek (2009) . But in the Prime timeline, Star Trek: Lower Decks ’ Ensign D'Vana Tendi has the distinction of being the first Orion main character in a Star Trek series. It’s also notable that Tendi has not demonstrated any special pheromone abilities that earlier Orion women had.

Thus far, we don’t have enough information to understand how and why the Orions and Andorians have formed an alliance. But we do know that The Burn that led to the fall of the Federation happened within the last century. Without the Federation in place, the Andorians presumably felt that partnering with the Orions was the best viable option. It’s also worth considering that the post-Burn rarity of dilithium crystals may have also brought the two races together. Access to dilithium crystals on Coridan was the main reason that Thelev impersonated an Andorian in "Journey to Babel.” It stands to reason that the need for dilithium is still driving their actions in the 32nd Century.

Given the rough shape of the galaxy, the partnership between the Orions and the Andorians probably won’t be the only unusual alliance encountered by the Discovery this season. The universe as we knew it is no more. But as viewers, it means that Star Trek: Discovery Season 3 is truly taking us where no one has gone before.

The History Of The Romulans, And Their Place In The Star Trek Universe

Eric Bana as Nero in Star Trek (2009)

"Star Trek" is home to countless alien races, but few have as enduring a presence in the franchise as the Romulans. They're the most persistent adversaries of the Federation, so much so that blue-tinted Romulan Ale remains under trade embargo. This hostility makes it all the more ironic that they resemble humanity's first alien allies, the Vulcans , sharing their pointed ears and arched eyebrows.

The in-universe origin of the Romulans is that they were Vulcans, millennia ago. In that distant past, the Vulcans were a warlike people, far from the cold logicians that fans know. That changed when (in Earth's 4th century), the philosopher Surak taught his people to embrace logic and master their emotions. Not all Vulcans accepted Surak's teachings; "Those Who March Beneath The Raptor's Wings" were eventually exiled from Vulcan. These dissident Vulcans settled on the twin planets Romulus and Remus, evolving into the Romulans and personifying a violent path not taken by their Vulcan cousins.

"Star Trek" is big on allegory — the interstellar powers represent the geopolitics of the 20th century. The Federation is the United States of America, a democracy of many member states. As the Federation's most pressing rival, the Klingon Empire is the Soviet Union. The Romulan Star Empire is China, a "sleeping dragon" superpower.

So, why have the Romulans endured as a crucial part of "Star Trek" history — and what does their role in that history look like?

Romulans in the Original Series

The Romulans were created by writer Paul Schneider, debuting in the season 1 episode "Balance of Terror." The episode features the Enterprise reacting to the destruction of outposts along the Romulan Neutral Zone; the culprit is a Romulan ship armed with a cloaking device. The Romulans flee back home while the Enterprise pursues its invisible quarry in a cat-and-mouse game.

This episode established the Romulan Star Empire had fought humanity in a devastating war a century ago. The war ended with a Neutral Zone established between the two parties' territories. Notably, no human had ever seen a Romulan in this time (or at least, no human who survived to tell about it). That means the Enterprise crew is stunned when they discover their adversaries are identical to Vulcans. The Romulans' exact backstory isn't spelled out, but Spock (Leonard Nimoy) speculates they are a Vulcan offshoot who retained his ancestors' warlike ways.

Schneider modeled the Romulans on the Romans; their twin homeworlds are named for the mythical founders of Rome and they employ ranks like "Centurion." Interviewed for "The Captains' Logs" by authors Edward Gross and Mark Altman , Schneider explained: "I came up with the concept of the Romulans which was an extension of the Roman civilization to the point of space travel, and it turned out quite well."

The Romulans' ship, dubbed a "Bird of Prey" due to the hawk painted on its underbelly, also created an association between the Romulans and birds. By "Star Trek: The Next Generation," their imperial insignia had evolved into a stylized raptor. Their ancestors' moniker, "Those Who March Beneath The Raptor's Wings," was probably extrapolated from this connection too by writer André Bormanis (the name first appears in "Star Trek: Enterprise" episode, "Awakening," written by Bormanis).

Further appearances

"Balance of Terror" is one of the most acclaimed episodes of "Star Trek: The Original Series." It was even semi-remade for the season 1 finale of "Strange New Worlds," titled "A Quality of Mercy." The unnamed Romulan Commander (played by Mark Lenard, who would go on to play Spock's father, Sarek) is an especially well-remembered villain, predating Khan Noonien Singh as the first worthy adversary of Captain Kirk (William Shatner) and the Enterprise. Even with his last words, he retains dignity and honor: "I regret that we meet in this way. You and I are of a kind. In a different reality, I could have called you friend."

Despite this dynamite debut, the Romulans made only two more appearances in "The Original Series." They are the antagonists of the season 2 episode "The Deadly Years," about the Enterprise crew succumbing to premature aging. However, only their ships are seen, not the Romulans themselves. They make a second and final onscreen appearance in season 3's "The Enterprise Incident" ( written by the legendary D.C. Fontana ). In this episode, Spock seduces a Romulan commander (Joanne Linville) while Kirk poses as a Romulan officer to steal her ship's cloaking device.

According to "The Art of Star Trek" by Judith and Garfield Reeves-Stevens, "Romulans were originally intended to be more of an ongoing threat to the crew of the Enterprise, but the make-up requirements proved too expensive. Klingons were cheaper." Note how, in "Balance of Terror" and "The Enterprise Incident," Romulan extras often wear ear-concealing helmets — an easy way to bypass make-up expenses.

The Romulans had only minor roles in the six theatrical "Star Trek" films featuring the original cast. They were rejected as villains of the third film, "The Search for Spock," again in favor of the Klingons (this is why the Klingons in that film have a cloaked ship called a Bird of Prey).

The Rihannsu

During the 1980s, the Romulans took center-stage in "Rihannsu," a five-novel series written primarily by Diane Duane (Peter Morwood co-authored the second, "The Romulan Way.") Published from 1984 to 2006, the novels invented a culture and language for the Romulans wholesale; they are technically not "Trek" canon but remain acclaimed for their world-building.

"Rihannsu" ("The Declared") is the Romulans' native name for themselves, akin to how German people call their nation "Deutschland," the Japanese call theirs "Nippon," etc. They are driven by "D'era," an expansionist impulse akin to Manifest Destiny, and "Mnhei'sahe" (ruling passion), a complex code of conduct that is foremost a rejection of the Vulcan system of logic.

"Mnhei'sahe" is weighed by one's personal strength and devotion to the Empire. Romulans seek power not for personal benefit per se, but because greater power serves the Empire. Selflessness is an alien concept to the Romulans; do things for the sake of your own Mnhei'sahe and others will benefit in the process. "Mnhei'sahe" spreads its claws even into simple Romulan social interactions, where the ideal outcome is for both parties to depart with their honor intact.

Much of Duane's other additions are inferences based on "Balance of Terror" and "The Enterprise Incident." Akin to Rome, the Romulans are an Oligarchic Republic; a Praetor is elected by the Senate itself, not the people at large. "The Enterprise Incident" showed a Romulan woman with a high military rank. So, "Rihannsu" gave the Romulan society a matriarchial tilt; a Romulan's family lineage is derived from their mother, not their father.

Much of "Rihannsu" is a holdover from the suggestion in "Star Trek: The Original Series" that Romulans were a warrior culture. For instance, their society has a semi-feudal system with a strong emphasis on family affiliation. Canon material would take a different path, showing Romulans as militant but not exactly honorable.

The Next Generation

In "Star Trek: The Next Generation," the Klingons were now good guys (mostly). They also became the go-to warrior race of "Star Trek"; Klingon society took on Viking and Samurai characteristics, where war, personal honor, and feudal affiliation were everything.

The Romulans became less and less the noble Roman-esque adversaries that Schneider had conceived of, with "TNG" instead highlighting their duplicity (with the cloaking devices) and isolationism. Thus, the stereotypical traits of Romulans became paranoia, deception, and xenophobia.

The Romulans were reintroduced in "TNG" season 1 finale, "The Neutral Zone," where it's said they had stayed out of galactic affairs for much of the 24th century. The episode (where several of their colonies are destroyed by the to-be-revealed Borg) awakens them. Creator Gene Roddenberry had initially not wanted to use the Romulans, but poor reception to the Ferengi meant the Federation needed a new adversary. Thus, the Romulans became the most frequent alien antagonist in the series; the Federation and Klingons were united as their enemies. Recurring Romulan villains included Tomalak (Andreas Katsulas) and Sela (Denise Crosby).

The most notable additions to the Romulans in "TNG" included V-shaped forehead ridges (dimorphic evolution from their Vulcan cousins), the D'deridex Class (enormous green warships descended from the Birds-of-Prey from "The Original Series"), and the Tal Shiar, Romulus' secret police.

Romulan highlights in "TNG" include "The Defector" (a Romulan military officer defects to the Federation) and "Reunification" (where Ambassador Spock has begun a push on Romulus for the two peoples to be one again).

The Next Generation (cont'd)

The Romulans weren't as prominent in "Deep Space Nine" as in "The Next Generation," but that series featured them finally uniting with the Federation. While the Federation and Klingons fight a losing war with the expansionist Dominion, the Romulans initially stay on the sidelines.

In the season 6 episode, "In The Pale Moonlight," Captain Sisko (Avery Brooks) and Garak (Andrew Robinson) falsify evidence of the Dominion's plans to invade Romulus and try to sway Senator Vreenak (Stephen McHattie). When their deception is revealed, Garak (with Sisko none the wiser until it's done) pulls a move the Romulans would be proud of: he assassinates Vreenak and frames the Dominion. Thus, the Romulans join the war as allies, and remain so until the series' end.

The Romulans finally got a silver screen spotlight in "Star Trek: Nemesis," the final "TNG" theatrical film. The Romulan Senate is assassinated by a bio-weapon and a new Praetor, Shinzon (Tom Hardy), seizes power. It turns out Shinzon is a failed clone of Picard, the product of an aborted spying operation. The biggest wrinkle "Nemesis" introduces to the Romulans is the Remans. Playing on the pre-established twin planets Romulus and Remus, the grey-skinned Remans are a slave race, toiling as forced laborers and shock troops.

The film skimps on the details of Reman history, so viewers can surmise they evolved on Remus and were subjugated by the Romulans. However, the novel trilogy "Vulcan's Soul" by Josepha Sherman and Susan Shwartz builds on the Remans displaying telepathy like the Vulcans (which the Romulans have always lacked). In this telling, the Remans were Vulcan exiles who refused to give up their telepathy and so were oppressed by the future Romulans; their appearance stems from the poor living conditions on Remus.

Looking to the past

"Star Trek: Enterprise" was a prequel set in the 22nd century, beginning before first contact between humans and Romulans. That event was depicted in the season 2 episode "Minefield," when the Enterprise stumbles into Romulan territory and is disabled by a cloaked minefield. True to canon, only the Romulans' ships are seen in the episode.

The Romulans finally took a larger role in season 4. The three-parter, "The Forge/Awakening/Kir'Shara" was about a Vulcan conspiracy to invade the Andorians. The ending revealed that Vulcan Administrator V'Las (Robert Foxworth) was in league with the Romulans and secretly working towards reunification. A subsequent three-parter, "Babel One/United/The Aenar," featured the Romulans as the explicit villains. A Romulan drone-ship, equipped with a holographic projector and controlled by Admiral Valore (Brian Thompson), attacked ships throughout the Alpha Quadrant to ferment dissent (the story begins with it destroying an Andorian ship while disguised as a Tellarite one, it later destroys a Rigellian freighter while disguised as Enterprise, etc.). However, the attacks only wind up bringing the targeted races together.

"Enterprise" established a firm timeframe for the Earth-Romulan War: 2156 to 2160. Moreover, the war was revealed as the event that brought the Federation together; Humans, Vulcans, Andorians, and Tellarites united in a military alliance against Romulan expansionism and never broke apart. The Romulans' increased presence in season 4 was building up to the war, but unfortunately, "Enterprise" was canceled before subsequent seasons could depict it. Thus, the Earth-Romulan War remains undepicted onscreen, confined to novels "Beneath The Raptor's Wings" and "To Brave The Storm" (both by Michael A. Martin).

The home world destroyed

Romulans were again the villains of a "Star Trek" film in director JJ Abrams' eponymous reboot. In the year 2387, Romulus and Remus are destroyed when their star goes supernova, shattering the Empire. Spock manages to contain the explosion with the substance Red Matter, opening a wormhole that sends him back in time to the 23rd century. Following him is the Romulan mining vessel the Narada, captained by vengeful Captain Nero (Eric Bana) — his name is another allusion to ancient Rome .

The Narada's presence creates an alternate timeline; Nero and his men destroy Vulcan with Red Matter before being defeated themselves. Nero and the Narada's crew stand out from other Romulans thanks to their shaved heads and tattoos; the admittedly non-canon comic "Star Trek: Countdown" suggests this is part of a mourning ritual. Normally the tattoos would fade, but Nero and his crew burnt them into their skin to ensure they'd never forget the loss of their home.

"Star Trek" returned to the "TNG" era with "Picard" and followed on from this point. It turns out that Starfleet offered to help evacuate Romulus, but after an attack on Mars, reneged on the plan; Picard himself resigned in disgust. The Romulans are far from extinct though. The Empire has collapsed into warring factions, one of which is the Romulan Free State. According to "Star Trek: Discovery," Vulcan/Romulan reunification will have become a reality by the 31st century. The groups remain culturally divided, but they again exist on the same planet, renamed from Vulcan to "Ni'var" (meaning two combined into one).

Romulan worldbuilding

Michael Chabon, showrunner of "Picard" season 1, also shared (via Medium) worldbuilding notes on the Romulans . These presumably influenced his onscreen depiction of them. Chabon writes that the Romulans are such secretive people that there is nothing more intimate to them than the truth; marriages have three participants because there must be third-party verification in everything.

The Romulan government is organized like an espionage network, with multiple competing cells, while Romulans all have four names: the common name (used for familiarity), imperial name (the state-recognized name), open name (for outsiders), and their true name (used only for close intimacy). Chabon suggests that a rumored reason for the Romulans' secrecy is the abundance of camouflaged predators on their adopted homeworld; their cloaked warbirds are modeled on a raptor whose plumage blends into the horizon.

Not all depictions of the Romulans totally align — compare Duane's Rihannsu to Chabon's Romulans. However, they all draw upon "The Original Series" and make inferences from there. "Star Trek" writers and fans aren't much different; they both take canon material and expand on it with some imagination.

"Star Trek" and its spin-offs are streaming on Paramount+.

Star Trek: Best Book-Only Characters

  • The Star Trek novels introduce unique characters like Akaar and Treir, adding depth to the expansive Starfleet universe.
  • Characters like Nick Keller and Elias Vaughn bring new perspectives to the post- DS9 era, facing challenging galactic events.
  • Mackenzie Calhoun leads the USS Excalibur in a new hero ship series, showcasing tactical genius in the New Frontier books.

Just like the universe itself, the Star Trek franchise is huge and far-reaching, encompassing several television shows, and numerous video games, movies, and books. While many of Star Trek 's most iconic characters appear in various series and films, there are many other great characters who only feature in alternative media sources. For instance, the final frontier has spawned some memorable video game-based characters .

Star Trek: 8 Most Powerful Federation Starships, Ranked

Yet perhaps the richest source of characters is the now questionably canon series of books that take place following The Next Generation and Deep Space Nine . From fresh takes on classic species like the Andorians and Orions, to some of Starfleet's finest officers, the Star Trek novels are a treasure trove of notable figures.

Leonard James Akaar

First appearence: star trek mission gamma book one: twilight.

  • Author: David R. George III
  • Publication Date: September 2002

Leonard James Akaar is unique among novel-only characters in that he does, in fact, make a blink-and-you'll-miss-it appearance on televised Trek . "Friday's Child," an episode of The Original Series , ends with his birth; however, the Capellan royal would not be seriously fleshed out until 2002's Mission Gamma: Twilight . By the time of the Deep Space 9 novels, Akaar had risen through the ranks of Starfleet to become an influential admiral with the ear of the Federation president.

Akaar's strategic mindset and steely resolve proved essential in preserving the Federation through some of its darkest periods, including the Borg invasion depicted in the Star Trek: Destiny series. The Starfleet legend may have been born in The Original Series , but the Star Trek novels were where he made his name.

First Appearence: Star Trek: Demons of Air and Darkness

  • Author: Keith R. A. DeCandido
  • Publication Date: September 2001

Star Trek features many inspirational female characters, from Kira Nerys to Katherine Janeway. However, few are as resourceful or as motivated as Treir , an Orion Dabo girl who transformed Quark's Bar into a highly successful business during the post- DS9 novels. Following her escape from Orion servitude, Treir earned her place as Quark's right-hand woman by implementing a series of radical reforms, including hiring a Dabo boy to attract more customers.

Star Trek: The Fates Of Every Live-Action TV Show's Main Character

Treir may not play a significant role in the canon-shattering events depicted in the Deep Space 9 novels, but this ruthless businesswoman helped to make Star Trek 's prose universe feel like a living, breathing place. If anyone is capable of giving Quark a run for his latinum, it's her.

Nick Keller

First appearence: star trek new earth: challenger.

  • Author: Diane Carey
  • Publication Date: August 2000

New Earth , a series of six novels that take place between Star Trek: The Motion Picture and The Wrath of Khan , was intended to act as a backdoor pilot for a new narrative focusing on Commander Nick Keller . In the final novel, Keller takes command of a makeshift starship in order to defend the human colony of Belle Terre from alien attack. Keller was conflicted between overthrowing his inept captain and preserving the lives of his comrades, and it's a great shame that a full series based on the space cowboy's adventures never emerged.

Interestingly, author Diane Carey based Keller's appearance on Scott Bakula, who would go on to play Captain Jonathan Archer in Star Trek: Enterprise . Keller, however, would make only two more appearances in the Star Trek universe, with both being part of the multi-series Gateways crossover event.

Elias Vaughn

First appearence: star trek: avatar (book one).

  • Author: S. D. Perry
  • Publication Date: July 2001

Elias Vaughn was a Starfleet officer and intelligence operative who joined Deep Space 9's command staff following the end of the Dominion War . Despite only holding the rank of commander, Vaughn's expertise proved a boon to the Federation outpost, and he played a role in several key events, including the USS Defiant 's post-war exploration of the Gamma Quadrant (depicted in the Mission Gamma sub-series).

Star Trek: 8 Impressive Things Kirk Did Before Joining The USS Enterprise

Vaughn was haunted by the death of his wife, Ruriko, and his troubled relationship with his estranged daughter, Prynn. This relationship was complicated by the fact that Prynn was also assigned to Deep Space 9. However, father and daughter were eventually able to reconcile–but not without some bumps along the way.

Christine Vale

First appearence: star trek: the belly of the beast.

  • Author: Dean Wesley Smith

While William Riker's USS Titan has made notable appearances in Star Trek: Lower Decks , the starship's adventures were originally chronicled in a series of spin-off novels. These books featured Christine Vale , a former detective turned Starfleet officer, as Riker's second-in-command. Vale was initially unwilling to take the post, as she disliked the idea of Riker working so closely with his wife, Deanna Troi.

Luckily, Vale took the post, which allowed her to act as a counterweight to any of Riker's Troi-related biases. During her time aboard the USS Titan , she helped to explore the Beta Quadrant and fend off a Borg invasion. Indeed, her record was so good that, following Riker's promotion to admiral, she took command of the Luna -class starship.

Thirishar ch'Thane

From their initial appearance in 1967's "Journey to Babel" and 2001's "The Andorian Incident," references to Star Trek 's Andorians were true and far between. One important detail was disclosed in The Next Generation , however: Andorians have four sexes , with all four required for successful reproduction.

The character of Thirishar ch'Thane (or "Shar") was a response to this premise. Shar served as Deep Space Nine's science officer following the end of the Dominion War, but was torn between his commitments to Starfleet and to his mating group, who wished him to return to Andor. This dilemma was further complicated by a dangerous decline in Andorian fertility, which threatened to cause the Andorians' extinction in the long term. Shar was eventually able to use his scientific knowledge to help solve the Andorian fertility crisis.

The Jem'Hadar are one of Star Trek 's most iconic creations , a powerful race of warriors motivated by their addiction to the chemical ketracel-white. During the Dominion War of 2373–2375, the Jem'Hadar were central to the Dominion assaults which nearly overwhelmed the Federation Alliance.

8 Best Starfleet Ships During The Dominion War

After the war's conclusion, Taran'atar , a Jem'Hadar without a ketracel-white dependency, was sent to Deep Space Nine as a cultural observer. Taran'atar's struggle to adjust to the Alpha Quadrant during peacetime makes for fascinating reading, as does seeing the fearsome warrior growing closer to his former enemies. Taran'atar's story takes some strange twists and turns, but he remains a fascinating character.

Mackenzie Calhoun

First appearence: star trek new frontier: house of cards.

  • Author: Peter David
  • Publication Date: July 1997

In 1997, Pocket Books published the first of Peter David's New Frontier books. While these novels included several characters from TV Trek (mostly notably Commander Shelby from "The Best of Both Worlds" ), they focused on a new hero ship, the USS Excalibur , and a new captain: Mackenzie Calhoun . Calhoun, an alien warrior modeled after Mel Gibson, was depicted as a tactical genius capable of beating Starfleet's toughest challenges–including the infamous Kobayashi Maru test.

Calhoun soon became a fan-favorite, with his New Frontier series including over 20 volumes. The Xenanian captain was even popular enough to be made into an action figure, the only example of this honor being bestowed on a character originating from any of Star Trek 's novels.

Star Trek: 8 Times The Vulcans Were Illogical

Star trek: the original series – 8 alien civilizations based on earth history, star trek: 5 deaths that rocked the franchise's foundation.

  • Vulcans, known for logic, have a violent past involving powerful weapons, civil wars, and exiled rebels.
  • Pre-Surak Vulcans created a devastating weapon powered by fierce emotions.
  • Vulcans, while guiding humanity, also spied on Andorians, held back human space exploration, and almost destroyed their own planet in civil wars.

For most of Star Trek 's history, Vulcans have been the benevolent aliens helping humanity on their way through the cosmos. They were famously the first extra-terrestrials that humans met, officially making their presence known after Zefram Cochrane's first successful warp test flight in the year 2063, and helped Earth's government form the United Federation of Planets .

The Vulcans in Star Trek are known for their calculating and logical dealings, but sometimes, even the best of them can be rather illogical.

Vulcans make diplomacy and technological development look easy, but their history has a few bumps in it, just like everyone else in the galaxy. While it's true that they have a better track record than most, the Vulcans have still done some pretty bad things , and their pre-Surak history showcases a pattern of savagery that would make a Klingon blush.

5 Creating The Stone Of Gol

A weapon so powerful it was broken into pieces and hidden.

  • Appeared In: Star Trek: The Next Generation - Season 7, Episode 5: "Gambit, Part 2"

The legacy of Vulcan's bloody history was revisited in The Next Generation episodes about the lost Stone of Gol , a fearsome weapon that Vulcans developed when they were still ruled by strong emotions. It was so dangerous that the ancients broke it into two separate pieces and hid each one somewhere in the galaxy.

It was the fierce emotions of the pre-Surak Vulcans that powered the Stone of Gol. The stronger the emotions of the target and wielder, the more devastating the weapon's power. When Picard discovered the secret of the weapon, he realized it hadn't been hidden because of its power . Because of the adoption of Surak's teachings about repressing emotions, it was simply rendered obsolete.

4 The Civil Wars

A time of atomic weapons in which vulcan was nearly destroyed.

  • Appeared In: Star Trek: The Original Series - Season 1, Episode 8: "Balance Of Terror"

The civil wars that consumed Vulcan's pre-Surak civilization were fought with a variety of brutal weapons, but the use of atomic forces is what almost doomed Vulcan. Although this period in history hasn't appeared on film as of yet, it's referenced many times by Spock in The Original Series and T'Pol of Enterprise .

The heroes of Star Trek: The Original Series visit countless planets throughout their ventures. These ones, however, can easily be compared to Earth.

Surak, the prophet who stepped forward to advocate for peace by purging all emotion, died of radiation poisoning after being caught in an atomic blast. However, it wasn't just the loss of life and infrastructure on a planetary scale that was devastating. Vulcans were capable of space travel as early as the 4th century, but decades of atomic wars regressed their whole society. Much of this knowledge was destroyed or lost, not to be regained for almost 1,500 years.

3 The Exile Of The Rebels

Led to the creation of the romulan empire.

  • Appeared In: Star Trek: Enterprise - Season 4, Episode 8: "Awakening"

The wars that determined the end to the old ways and the adoption of the teachings of Surak also had the side-effect of sending part of the Vulcan population into permanent exile. It could be a matter of opinion as to how bad this was, or perhaps it was just an unfortunate consequence of history, but the repercussions lasted well into the 24th century .

Not every Vulcan agreed to adopt Surak's teachings, and when it became clear that some would rather die or kill than change their ways, they were exiled into the far reaches of space. The result was the Romulan Empire, and they were a destructive and aggressive intergalactic force that had a vice grip on the neutral zone for decades.

2 Spying On The Andorians

And using the sanctity of a monastery to do it.

  • Appeared In: Star Trek: Enterprise - Season 1, Episode 7: "The Andorian Incident"

The Monastery of P'Jem was one of the Vulcan culture's holiest places, which is why they thought a spy op could safely hide underneath it without getting caught. It didn't seem like the long-term residents of the monastery knew this secret, but there were a few in-residence spies who did, and they secretly plotted against both the Andorians and the Enterprise crew.

Fans know Star Trek for logical debates, but these prove it's just as capable with heavy emotion.

Even though the Vulcans were in the wrong in this case when they built a complex spy center underneath an ancient monastery, they maintained that Archer and his crew had committed a sacrilege against their holy sites. They refused to admit any wrongdoing and used the incident to try and ground the Enterprise and recall T'Pol more than once in the course of the series.

1 Holding Humanity Back

The vulcans thought the human race wasn't ready.

  • Appeared In: Star Trek: Enterprise - Season 1, Episode 1: "Broken Bow"

Up until Star Trek: Enterprise , the Vulcans had been mostly friendly and helpful, but one of the main premises of Star Trek: Enterprise was their meddling when it came to using the warp drive that humans invented. The Vulcans weren't sure that such an emotive and impulsive race should be running around in space, especially when Vulcans already had Andorians to worry about.

The Vulcans intended to hinder the development of human space exploration technology as much as help, and Jonathan Archer in particular was vocal about how much he resented Vulcan's involvement in human politics. There were some important advancements during this period, mostly thanks to Captain Archer and his Enterprise, but the fact remains that the Vulcans held humanity back for almost a century.

History [ ]

The first ship of this class, the Kumari , was commanded by Commander Thy'lek Shran from 2142 to 2154 . ( ENT : " Babel One ")

Since their launch in the 2140s , several Andorian warships of this type had been reported missing. When Enterprise NX-01 was attacked by a Romulan drone ship disguised as an Andorian battle cruiser, Shran suggested that the Tellarites may have been responsible, using one of these missing ships after enhancing its systems. ( ENT : " Babel One ")

In 2154 , several Andorian battle cruisers were incorporated into an Andorian-Tellarite- Vulcan fleet which consisted of some 128 ships, formed in response to a Romulan marauder that threatened the entire region. ( ENT : " United ")

In the mirror universe , the Andorian rebels utilized this class of vessel to engage a Terran fleet in 2155 . At least two of these vessels were among the rebel ships attacking the ISS Avenger . ( ENT : " In a Mirror, Darkly, Part II ")

In 2381 , several of these cruisers were docked at Starbase 25 . ( LD : " An Embarrassment Of Dooplers ")

Technical data [ ]

The Andorian battle cruiser was considerably more rugged than the designs utilized by contemporary United Earth Starfleet vessels. ( ENT : " Proving Ground ") Like all Andorian combat vessels, the Andorian battle cruiser was constructed using a "significant quantity" of duranium alloy . ( ENT : " Babel One ") Despite the vessel's fairly large size, it was crewed by a complement of only eighty-six. ( ENT : " United ") In comparison, Starfleet's smaller NX-class had a standard complement of eighty-three. ( ENT : " E² ")

Physical arrangement [ ]

Andorian battle cruiser overview

Design overview

The outboard plan of the Andorian battle cruiser's design consisted of a central "spine" that contained a vertically bifurcated forward hull containing several decks . The central "spine" gradually narrowed toward the aft section of the ship where it connected to two vertically stacked warp nacelles . Located midway down the "spine" were a pair of forward-swept wings which contained the impulse engines and defensive systems . ( ENT : " Cease Fire ", " Proving Ground ", " Zero Hour ", etc.)

Defensive systems [ ]

Andorian battle cruiser, forward beam

Forward particle cannon

The defensive systems utilized by the Andorian battle cruiser included a formidable array of particle cannons composed of multiple forward cannon emplacements, port and starboard wing emitters, as well as dorsal and ventral emitters capable of firing in 180 degree arcs. ( ENT : " Zero Hour ", " Kir'Shara ")

The Andorian battle cruiser enjoyed an advantage over other less advanced vessels of this era due to its utilization of deflector shield technology. Nevertheless, this class was somewhat susceptible to attacks directed towards its shield generator . The shield generator itself was located distantly from the vessel's power grid , leaving it vulnerable to damage. ( ENT : " Kir'Shara ", " Babel One ")

Ventral cannon

During the 2150s , Andorian technology was considered to be more advanced than analogous Tellarite technology. One Tellarite cruiser was said to not be able to "stand a chance" against two Andorian warships. ( ENT : " Babel One ") The Andorian battle cruiser had a level of firepower comparable to the Xindi-Reptilian warship and the Vulcan D'kyr -type combat cruiser . ( ENT : " Zero Hour ", " Kir'Shara ")

In the mirror universe , this class proved significantly inferior to a mid- 23rd century Federation Constitution -class starship. This was clearly illustrated when the USS Defiant , defending the Terran warship ISS Avenger from rebel attack, engaged and destroyed one Andorian battle cruiser within seconds and inflicted heavy damage to a second before allowing it to escape. ( ENT : " In a Mirror, Darkly, Part II ")

Propulsion systems [ ]

Andorian battle cruisers utilized warp drive technology that was more advanced than Starfleet's warp five engine , allowing Andorian vessels to be "considerably faster" than Earth's NX -class starship . ( ENT : " Proving Ground ") These vessels could travel at speeds that were described at the time as "high warp." ( ENT : " Zero Hour ")

One of the technological innovations contributing to the high performance of the ship's warp drive was the utilization of advanced antimatter injectors with variable compression nozzles . In 2153 , knowledge of this "sophisticated piece of technology" was still considered to be "rather sensitive information." ( ENT : " Proving Ground ")

Additional systems [ ]

Andorian battle cruiser, tractor beam

Tractor beam

The long-range sensors utilized on board the Andorian battle cruiser were more sophisticated than those utilized on board Starfleet's NX -class. ( ENT : " Proving Ground ", " Babel One ") These sensors were capable of scanning a star system from a distance without betraying the vessel's presence. Conversely, usage of its short-range sensors was detectable by vessels that were being scanned by them. Commander Shran attempted to innocently explain away these sensors to Degra as being " omni-directional " during a ruse to scan the second prototype of the Xindi weapon during its test in the Calindra system in 2153 . ( ENT : " Proving Ground ")

Much like Vulcan ships of the era, Andorian battle cruisers were equipped with a tractor beam . The tractor emitter was located on the ship's forward ventral section. ( ENT : " Proving Ground ")

Additionally, these warships were equipped with transporters capable of performing site-to-site transport . Use of these transporters was only detectable by internal sensors as a brief energy surge. ( ENT : " Kir'Shara ")

Auxiliary craft [ ]

Andorian escape pod

The Andorian battle cruiser housed at least one shuttle . ( ENT : " Proving Ground ") They also carried multiple escape pods . ( ENT : " Proving Ground ", " Babel One ")

Interior design [ ]

Capable of operating with a crew of five, the bridge of the Andorian battle cruiser directly supervised all primary mission operations and coordinated all departmental activities. Its design was not unlike the layouts used aboard Earth and Klingon vessels of that era, and of Federation starships of later eras. The most significant difference was the placement of the wall consoles , which faced away from the captain rather than towards him.

The layout consisted of an inverted "half-moon"-shaped viewscreen located on the forward bulkhead , directly in front of the ship's side-by-side helm and navigation console .

In the center of the bridge was the captain's chair , with two large convex dishes on either side of the chair. A semi-circle of four station consoles, each with its own stool, surrounded the captain's chair, one each to port and starboard, and two near the aft. All four consoles were each attached to a support column which braced the bridge's vaulted ceiling.

Along the rear bulkhead were several display monitors, separating the entry way to the captain's ready room on the port side from the entryway to the bridge on the starboard side. ( ENT : " Proving Ground ", " Zero Hour ", " Babel One ")

Ready room [ ]

The ready room was located adjacent to the bridge and provided the commanding officer with a private place to conduct ship's business. The ready room on board the Kumari had a large viewscreen located on the bulkhead opposite the entryway and a desk and chair located between the entryway and the viewscreen. Behind the commander's desk was a shelving display that contained the officer's personal effects. ( ENT : " Proving Ground ")

Interrogation room [ ]

The interrogation room was a small area that contained an interrogation chair located opposite of the entryway and a free standing control console located in the corner, near the door. The interrogation technology utilized a machine that created a neuro-synaptic field which caused the victim's emotional threshold to be lowered rather than causing physical discomfort . ( ENT : " Kir'Shara ")

Cargo bays [ ]

Andorian battle cruiser, cargo hold

The Andorian battle cruiser contained at least three cargo bays , with the third being located on the ventral section of the ship, near the center of the vessel. These cargo bays were shielded against potential radiation by use of a force field . ( ENT : " Proving Ground ")

Background information [ ]

In the final draft script of " Cease Fire ", this type of Andorian craft wasn't physically described or given a name other than "Andorian ships". [6] The phrase "Andorian warship" was commonly used to refer to this type of craft in the final draft script of " Proving Ground ".

The Andorian battle cruiser was designed by John Eaves . Despite the Andorians having first appeared as long ago as in the 1967 TOS episode " Journey to Babel ", Eaves had very little design inspirations to work with. Although he often tried to design a retro version of what had previously been shown on-screen, the Andorian battle cruiser was the first Andorian ship to ever appear. " So this was open for me to figure out what we wanted to do, " Eaves explained. ( Star Trek: The Official Starships Collection , issue 37, p. 16)

John Eaves began the design process by illustrating a series of alternative concept sketches on a single piece of paper, for the consideration of the producers. He was especially pleased with an extremely organic "manta ray" approach. It even included a suggestion of antennae, referencing the Andorian makeup. ( Star Trek: The Official Starships Collection , issue 37, p. 16)

Another, much less thin design John Eaves proposed for the Andorian battle cruiser was shaped like a rocket and had two distinct inspirations: a World War II seaplane and the Battlestar Galactica , the reimagined series of Battlestar Galactica starting to air about the same time as the Andorian vessel was being designed. " I think subconsciously the main body is a little bit of the Galactica flipped over on top and on the bottom, with some weird looking engines. " The design of the engines and the wings drew inspiration from features of World War II airplanes. Eaves took the idea of double-jointed wings from a Mariner plane he'd seen at the Phoenix air museum. However, the wings on that aircraft were the reverse of those on the Andorian ship, slanting up and then dropping down. Eaves also borrowed the look of landing skiff from a water-landing plane he'd additionally viewed at the Phoenix museum. " I thought it was kind of cool to tie that together, " said Eaves, " so the skiff became the double engines up on top of the wing. " ( Star Trek: The Official Starships Collection , issue 37, pp. 16-17)

John Eaves was surprised when the producers opted for the thin, rocket-like configuration. Because "Cease Fire" (in which the Andorian battle cruiser was to make its first appearance) was a busy episode, the concept sketch, once it was approved, was sent immediately to Eden FX without any additional drawings. ( Star Trek: The Official Starships Collection , issue 37, pp. 16 & 17) The design was thereafter rendered as a CGI model by Pierre Drolet ; the "light kit" for the model was added by Rob Bonchune (Per contributor 's email correspondence with Bonchune). Drolet completed the design work, refining the design as he did so. ( Star Trek: The Official Starships Collection , issue 37, p. 17)

The length established for the model, as scaled in relation to the other models created for the series, was 360 meters. ( Star Trek: The Official Starships Collection , issue 37, pp. 1 & 3)

In the final draft script of " Proving Ground ", this configuration was at first described as "a formidable looking spacecraft". The next sentence commented, " We may recognize it as an Andorian warship. "

The tactile interfaces for the helm/navigation console were sold in the It's A Wrap! sale and auction for US$260.00. [7] Two of the four "distressed" work consoles that appeared on the Kumari bridge were also sold in the It's A Wrap! auction for US$676.66 and US$660.00, respectively. [8]

The captain's chair, which was a reuse of Voyager 's first officer's chair, was sold in the 40 Years of Star Trek: The Collection auction. The auction estimate for the chair was US$4,000 to US$6,000; the sale price was US$3,500 (US$4,200 with premium). [9] Four bridge stools, similar to the stools used on the Kumari bridge (however painted gold), were also sold in the 40 Years of Star Trek: The Collection auction. [10]

The Andorian symbol that was on the upper aft section of the bridge was sold in the 40 Years of Star Trek: The Collection auction. The auction estimate for the plaque was US$100 - US$150; the sale price was US$1200 (US$1440 with premium). [11]

Apocrypha [ ]

In the 25th century timeline of Star Trek Online , the Andorian battle cruiser (or a ship with a similar design) is known as the Andorian escort, and is available for players to captain.

In Star Trek: Fleet Command , two types of Andorian battle cruisers are featured by the names Talla and Kumari, although the Kumari in Star Trek: Fleet Command looks different than the one seen in Star Trek: Enterprise under the command of Thy'lek Shran .
