Frequently Asked Questions

Jet-off on holiday abroad or within the UK whenever you like with our Annual travel insurance, in the knowledge that you're covered for unlimited trips lasting up to 31 days (over a 12-month period). There's no obligation to tell us when you're going away either, so you can pack your bags knowing you're already covered. Our annual multi-trip policies vary depending on your needs, but each one offers differing levels of cancellation cover , delayed departure cover, medical expenses cover and more.

You can choose the area of cover that's most appropriate for your travel plans, from Europe-only to worldwide annual cover. You can also choose a level of cover that suits you: Bronze, Silver or Gold.

If you're planning more than one holiday this year, you can save money by taking out one Annual travel insurance policy, rather than buying multiple Single Trip policies. Our yearly travel insurance will save you time too, because you'll be covered all year – no matter how many holidays you take.

Our Bronze, Silver and Gold levels of cover allow you to choose an option to suit your requirements. Once you've found the right policy, you can either be covered straight away or – if you don't need your cancellation cover to start immediately – you can defer your start date by up to 31 days. Get a travel insurance quote today to see exactly how much your policy will cost.

If you're taking more than one trip this year, then our Annual multi-trip travel insurance could be a great choice for you. Remember, the more holidays you take, the more you save. If you're taking several trips in Europe , then you can take out a policy that will cover you for European destinations. If you're travelling further afield, our Worldwide Travel Insurance will have you covered.

Plus, we offer discounts for families on your yearly holiday insurance. If you've got fun activities planned, you can add Winter Sports and Ski  insurance to your travel insurance policy. We even offer Annual travel insurance, so you can be covered all year round.

Whether you're taking family holidays, heading away for the odd long weekend or booking last minute trips, you could save money by being covered every time you take off with our Annual travel insurance.

If you have any pre-existing medical conditions to declare, you will not be eligible to purchase an Annual multi-trip travel insurance policy.

Usually we'd consider cover for pre-existing medical conditions under our Single Trip and Backpacker policies. However since we are making improvements to the booking engine of our website, we are temporarily unable to offer travel insurance policies to cover people's pre-existing medical conditions. We are planning to reintroduce our offer and also extend this to Annual travel insurance in the near future, once the update is complete.

You may be able to obtain an alternative travel insurance policy through one of the providers featured in the MoneyHelper directory of specialist travel insurance providers for people with serious medical conditions.

Travelling more than once this year?

If you're going away more than once in a year, it's worth considering annual multi-trip travel insurance. Taking out this cover means you can travel without the worry, or the hassle, of getting cover every time you go.

Please note there’s a limit to the length of time you can spend away on any individual trip. All Post Office Travel insurance policies cover you up to a maximum of 31 days. If you’re going to be away for longer, you can add our trip extension cover. This gives you an extended protection of 45 or 60 days, for an additional premium.

Medical Assistance Plus: 24/7 holiday health support

Have peace of mind when you travel knowing health professionals are just one click away.

Medical Assistance Plus (2), powered by Air Doctor, comes free with all our travel insurance policies. It gives you access to outpatient medical support while you’re away.

Through the service you can book an in-person or video consultation with a doctor. You can also get prescriptions delivered to your nearest pharmacy.

We’ll send you an SMS reminder about the service the day before you travel (for single-trip and backpacker cover) or the day before your policy begins (for annual multi-trip cover).

What’s covered?

Here’s a summary of the cover our annual multi-trip policies provide. For full details check our policy documents. Terms and conditions apply.

Kids covered for free

If you buy a family annual multi-trip travel insurance policy, your children aged under 18 will be covered at no extra cost. All you have to do is name them on the policy, and confirm that they have no medical conditions. They’ll be covered even if they’re invited on holiday with another adult, such as a friend or relative

Emergency medical expenses

We may be able to help if you need emergency medical treatment, return to the UK and more while you’re abroad

Delayed departure (3)

You’re covered if your first outbound or final inbound international departure is delayed by 4 or more hours. As long as it matches certain reasons set out in the policy wording

Items that are usually carried or worn during a trip are covered if they get lost, stolen or damaged

Personal liability and legal costs

We also include protection for any unexpected personal liability and legal costs you might be charged while you're away

Sporting activities included

We cover over 100 sports and activities free of charge, but there are some we don’t cover at all. Check your policy wording for the full list and our terms and conditions, as some aren’t covered for personal injury or personal liability

Choose a travel insurance cover level

We can offer you a choice of economy, standard and premier cover levels.

Policy wording

Upgrade your cover with ease

Need cover for your policy that's not included as standard? Just pay a little more to add these upgrades – optional or mandatory depending on the trip type.

This optional extra helps protect you from the impact of airspace disruption, natural catastrophes, terrorist acts or Covid-19 (5)

If you’re happy with the cover offered, but worried about excess fees, you can opt for an excess waiver. For an additional premium, you can add it to any Post Office level of cover for zero excess fees (5)

Insure all your devices with our easy-to-add gadget cover. It’s perfect to protect all your smartphones, tablets, laptops and consoles (5)

Specialist cover is mandatory for winter sports like skiing and snowboarding. There’s greater risk of emergency costs. Make sure you’re protected on the pistes (5)

If you're going on a cruise, specialist cover is both important and mandatory. It covers missed departure due to breakdown, falling ill on board, being confined to your cabin, lost baggage and more (5)

Trip extensions are available up to 45 or 60 days, increasing from the standard 31 days (5)

All medical conditions considered

Living with a medical condition shouldn’t stop you seeing the world. And, with the right travel insurance in place, you can enjoy peace of mind on your adventures – just in case something unfortunate happens.

At Post Office, we cover most pre-existing conditions. Contact us for a quote to see if we can cover you. It’s important to declare upfront all your medical conditions and any medication you're taking.

If we can't help and yours is a serious pre-existing medical condition, check the  Money and Pensions Scheme (MaPS) directory. It lists companies that may be able to help you. Or call 0800 138 7777 .

Common questions

Does annual multi-trip travel insurance cover covid-19.

Policies purchased from 28 March 2024 onwards provide cover if:

  • You test positive for Covid-19 within 14 days of your trip and are required to self-isolate by a medical practitioner, the NHS or any UK government body
  • A medical practitioner certifies you as too ill to travel due to Covid-19
  • You, someone you’re travelling with, or someone you’re staying with is required to self-isolate by a medical practitioner, UK government body or health authority
  • You, an immediate relative (6) or someone you plan to travel or stay with dies or is hospitalised due to Covid-19

If an insured trip has to be cut short, the unused portion of it can be claimed for if:

  • You, an immediate relative (6), or someone you’re travelling or staying with dies or is hospitalised due to Covid-19

There’s also cover for medical and repatriation costs if you fall ill with Covid-19 while away. Call our emergency assistance line and we’ll help you seek treatment. If needed, we can also arrange to bring you back to the UK.

There’s no other coronavirus cover on our policies, but for extra reassurance you can add our trip disruption cover upgrade option. This gives you added protection against missed departures and expenses charged due to change of testing or quarantine requirements. Add it to your preferred policy for an extra premium.

If you bought your policy with us between 31 March 2022 and 27 March 2024 , some cover for Covid-19 is included as standard. Please visit our coronavirus FAQs page for the full details.

Should the FCDO advise against all travel to your destination, there’s no cover under any section of the policy if you decide to travel.

It’s important to follow FCDO advice on essential travel. If you choose to travel and the trip’s not essential, we’ll only cover a claim if the cause isn’t linked to the reason for the FCDO advice. This limitation applies even if you’ve purchased an optional trip disruption upgrade. You may be able to travel with full cover if we authorise, in writing, that your trip’s essential before you travel. To request this, please email  [email protected] .

Please make sure you’re clear what’s covered and what’s not. Check the answers to common questions about coronavirus cover and the full policy wording for more details.

What is annual multi-trip travel insurance?

This is a type of policy that covers you for multiple trips within one year.

This is good for people who travel frequently and don’t want the expense of buying a new policy for each journey they take. Remember that if you travel to different parts of the world with each trip, you will need a policy that covers all of the areas you travel to.

All our policies have a maximum 31-day trip duration limit. This can be extended up to 45 or 60 days for an additional premium.

What different cover levels are there for annual multi-trip travel insurance?

Post Office offers three levels of travel insurance. These are economy, standard and premier.

Why buy annual travel insurance rather than single-trip travel insurance?

Buying an annual multi-trip travel insurance policy may not be cheaper outright than a single-trip travel insurance policy. However, multi-trip insurance allows you to take as many trips as you like within the 365-period of the policy. You can take these trips in both the UK and overseas. So it can be more cost-effective and work out cheaper in the long run.

Whether you’re popping abroad to watch the football, fancy a weekend shopping trip to Paris or are taking a two-week family holiday, if you expect to travel more than once in a year, it’s worth considering multi-trip cover.

When does annual travel insurance start?

The start date can be up to 31 days in advance. If you have a pre-booked trip and need cancellation cover, make the start of your policy the date you take it out, not the date your trip starts.

The period of insurance is for 12 months. In that time you’re covered for each trip you book and undertake within that period, up to the maximum trip duration for your chosen policy.

Can you cancel annual travel insurance?

You can cancel your policy within 14 days of receiving your insurance documents. But you can only cancel if you’ve not started a trip, made a claim or intend to make a claim. If you meet these criteria, we’ll give you a full refund.

If you cancel after the 14-day cooling-off period, you won’t qualify for a refund. For annual multi-trip policies, the cancellation period is extended up to the start date of the policy, even if this is more than 14 days from the date you received your documents.

However, we’ll consider any exceptional events that may allow us to repay you for any unused cover. These include bereavement, or an unexpected change to your policy that means we’re no longer able to carry on insuring you.

The unused premium will be calculated on a sliding scale. You can find more information on this in your policy wording.

Is there a discount for students?

Yes, there is. We’ve partnered with Student Beans to offer a student discount. To claim it simply log in with your Student Beans account . If you don’t have one, you’ll need to register for a Student Beans account and verify you’re a student first. You’ll be given a unique code, which you’ll need to enter into the promotion box that appears when getting your travel insurance quote. The discount will be taken off your quote total.

Do you offer a discount for graduates?

Yes, we do. We’ve partnered with Grad Beans to offer a discount to graduates. To claim it, you’ll need to either register for a Grad Beans account (to verify your graduate status) or log in with your existing account . You’ll be given a unique code, which you’ll need to enter in the promotion code box that appears when getting your travel insurance quote. The discount will be taken off your quote total.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is Annual Multi-Trip Travel Insurance?

Annual Multi-Trip Travel Insurance, which is also sometimes known as Annual Travel Insurance, is a type of policy that allows for an insured person to be covered to travel as many times as they want within the year (in line with the policy terms and conditions), all within the once yearly price of the Annual policy.

It should not be confused with a policy where you are spending a year continuously outside your home country; that would require a Long Stay policy.

If you are looking for Annual Travel Insurance because you are planning on taking several trips or holidays throughout the next year, a Voyager Plus Annual Multi Trip Travel Insurance policy will give you the peace of mind that you are protected financially if something unexpected were to happen and should save you money rather than buying multiple Short Stay policies over the year.

2. What destinations are covered under travel insurance for annual multi-trips?

Our Voyager Plus Annual Multi-trip travel insurance policies can cover trips unlimited to the following areas; depending on the area selected at the time of purchase:

  • Area 2: The continent of Europe West, any country with a Mediterranean coastline (excluding Algeria, Libya, Syria and Israel), Channel Islands, the Canary Islands, the Isle of Man, Madeira and Iceland (including Area 1)
  • Area 3: Worldwide excluding North America. So, the USA, Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean Islands, Bahamas & Bermuda are excluded under this area
  • Area 4 Worldwide including North America

Please note : Area 1 as defined as the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland is not available on an annual multi-trip insurance policy, as it is included in the policy providing there is a minimum of 2 nights away from home using pre-booked and prepaid accommodation or transport.

3. How does annual travel insurance work?

With our Voyager Plus Annual Multi-Trip Travel Insurance policy, we can offer cover for an unlimited number of leisure and business trips. However, the maximum trip duration on our Annual Multi-Trip Travel Insurance differs for different age groups:

  • 45 days for travellers under the age of 70*
  • 31 days for travellers who are between the age of 70 to 74

*The maximum trip duration on our Annual Travel Insurance can be extended to be up to 62 days per trip, providing you pay an additional premium to your policy.

What is GP on Demand and What Service does it provide?

Once registered with the service online, “GP on Demand” gives you access to unlimited virtual appointments, either by telephone or video-call with a UK-based, NHS qualified GP 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, helping you to get professional advice when you need it most.

What is Travel Insurance and What Does it Cover?

While going on holiday should be a fun and enjoyable experience, sometimes the unexpected can unfortunately happen. Voyager Plus Travel Insurance is designed to give you financial peace of mind that you are covered should something unexpected happen, so you are not left out of pocket, in the event of a valid claim.

Travel Insurance Benefits

The following summary of Travel Insurance benefits are just some of the areas of cover included as standard across all levels of cover on our Voyager Plus Travel Insurance policy. Please read the policy wording here for the full cover available under the policy.

Cancellation or Curtailment

A Cancellation is where you are unable to start your trip, due to an insured reason. A Curtailment is where you have to end your trip earlier than expected, due to an insured reason.

This section provides cover for any unused and non-refundable travel and accommodation costs (including unused pre-booked excursions and course fees) that have been paid, or where there is a contract to pay, if it is necessary to cancel or curtail the planned trip because of any of the events specified in the policy wording .

Emergency Medical Expenses

Medical treatment in other countries can be very expensive. This section covers the cost of emergency medical treatment, outside your home country if you’re injured or suffer unexpected illness including with symptoms of or testing positive for COVID-19 during your trip, in line with the policy terms, conditions and exclusions. Cover also includes the cost of repatriation back to your home country if medically necessary.

Please Note : If you have pre-existing medical conditions and would like cover in case you need emergency medical treatment related to them, you will need to complete a medical screening to see if cover is available and pay the appropriate additional premium.

Covers the loss, theft or damage to your baggage, meaning: personal belongings, including clothing worn, and personal luggage owned or borrowed by you that you take with you on your trip, as well as your valuables as defined in the policy wording .

Please Note : Your gadgets may not fall under the Baggage definition in the policy wording and you may need to also purchase the gadget cover Option to cover them.

Personal Accident

In the event of a serious accident from which you suffer life changing injuries during your trip the policy will provide cover in the event of your death or permanent disablement because of the accident. Please refer to the policy wording for full details on this area of cover.

Please Note : Any immediate injuries you suffer from such an incident would be dealt with under the Emergency Medical Expenses section.

Travel Delay

No one likes to be delayed when travelling!

So with Voyager Plus Travel Insurance cover is available if the public transport (meaning any aeroplane, ship, train or coach) that you are booked to travel on is delayed by at least 12 hours. If your departure from your home country is delayed for more than 12 hours and you choose to abandon your trip, instead of a payment for delay, you are covered for the cost of the trip under the Cancellation or Curtailment section of cover.

Missed Departure / Journey Disruption

Cover for additional travel and accommodation expenses in the event you miss the departure of your public transport for your trip, due to a specified reason as defined in the policy wording .

This section also covers, in the event of a Catastrophe (as defined in the policy wording ), if you are forced to move from your pre-booked accommodation to allow you to continue your trip.

These are a few of the reasons why getting travel insurance is a good idea before you travel so that you are not left out of pocket should the unexpected happen. Furthermore, Voyager Plus Travel Insurance has a wide range of features and benefits, which are just not available on cheaper products, see the policy wording for full details.

Our Platinum level cover has Defaqto's 5 Star rating.

Covid-19 - what our travel insurance covers

Our travel insurance now covers you for certain events related to Coronavirus (COVID-19), provided you have proof of a positive Covid-19 test and your cover is active at the time of the event.

What we cover

We provide cover for some costs related to Covid-19: please see Section 1 'emergency medical costs and repatriation' and Section 2 'cancelling or cutting short your trip' in your policy book for full details on what's covered.

We'll cover you if:

  • you were diagnosed with Covid-19 before your trip was due to start
  • a close relative died or became seriously ill as a result of Covid-19 before your trip was due to start
  • you weren't allowed to board your pre-booked outbound travel due to symptoms of Covid-19
  • an insured person or a close relative died during the trip because of Covid-19
  • you couldn't take part in an excursion due to you self-isolating after getting Covid-19

What we don’t cover

You won't be covered if:

  • you had reason to believe your trip may be cancelled, postponed or cut short when you booked it, purchased your policy or started your trip
  • any government or public authority imposes travel restrictions or quarantine on a community, location, or vessel because of Covid-19 (this includes, but is not limited to, local lockdowns, entry requirements, being denied entry and airspace closures)
  • you have to quarantine after arriving in the UK or abroad
  • the Foreign Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) change their advice to avoid ‘all travel’ or ‘all but essential travel’ to your destination because of Covid-19

For more information about how Coronavirus (COVID-19) affects your travel cover, see our FAQ page . And remember to check the policy booklet carefully before you buy to make sure our cover meets your needs.

Take out the hassle of arranging insurance for every trip

If you take to the skies regularly, an annual policy could be just what you're looking for. It takes out any hassle of arranging insurance for every trip; simply sit back and relax knowing that all your holidays within the year are covered with Admiral Travel Insurance.

Admiral's Annual Multi-Trip Travel Insurance can insure you for destinations almost anywhere in the world, and for a range of activities including snorkelling, windsurfing and sea kayaking.

And if you travel more than once a year, annual cover could be more cost effective for you than a single trip policy.

You may also be able to add Winter Sports , Cruise or Gadget Cover .

What benefits do I get with Admiral's annual cover?

  • Unlimited travel for up to 31 days per trip
  • Medical Emergency Cover
  • Legal Liability
  • Legal Protection
  • Personal Belongings Cover

Annual, multi trip travel insurance is perfect for regular holidaymakers and it can cover you whether you're in the UK, Europe or Worldwide .

What level of cover do I need?

Just like Admiral Single Trip Insurance , three levels of cover are available - Admiral, Admiral Gold or Admiral Platinum Cover - on our annual, multi-trip policies.

Here is a small sample of the benefits included with each level of cover. You can read the full list in the policy summary booklet .

If you fancy the adrenaline rush of a skiing holiday, or you're taking to the seas on a cruise, you’ll need to add on our winter sports cover upgrade or cruise upgrade to your policy as without these, your trip won’t be covered at all.

Are there any exclusions?

As with any insurance policy, some things aren’t covered by Admiral Travel Insurance.

Exclusions include:

  • Pre-existing conditions you don’t tell us about
  • The pre-existing conditions of a relative not on your policy
  • Any losses or expenses you can recover from elsewhere, or are more specifically insured by another policy
  • Anticipated events
  • Coronavirus
  • Travelling against FCDO or medical advice

You can read the full list of exclusions in our policy documents .

Do I need travel insurance if I have a European or Global Health Insurance Card?

Yes, you do. The EHIC (if still in date) isn't a substitute for medical and travel insurance; it entitles you to state-provided healthcare that may become necessary during your holiday in the UK and European Economic Area (but no longer in Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway or Switzerland).

In some cases it will cover all or part of your costs for medical care, but it won't cover expensive needs such as airlifting from ski resorts or repatriation. The same applies for the new Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) which you can apply for once your EHIC has expired.

What if I have a pre-existing condition?

A pre-existing condition is a short or long term illness or injury you have or have had before you buy travel insurance. This includes having symptoms, tests, diagnosis or medical treatment for a condition.

You can declare your pre-existing conditions during the quote process to see if we can offer cover. If you’re unsure what needs to be declared or if you're unable to find your condition on the medical conditions list, please contact us on 0333 234 9913.

Your pre-existing conditions won’t be covered unless you’ve:

  • Declared them all on your policy
  • Received written confirmation that we’ll cover your medical condition
  • Paid any additional premium in full

Policy terms and conditions apply. Please note, if you’ve had a positive diagnosis of Covid-19 and been prescribed medication, received treatment, or had a consultation with a doctor or hospital specialist for any medical condition in the past two years, this needs to be declared on your policy.

If you don’t tell us about your pre-existing conditions or give us incorrect information, your policy may be invalid, and we may refuse all or part of any claim you submit.

For a quote with us, click the green button above.

The MoneyHelper directory

If you require cover for more serious medical conditions, MoneyHelper may be able to help you find specialist travel insurance through their medical directory.

If you wish to get in touch with them you can call them on 0800 138 7777 or find them online . (Monday to Friday 8:00-18:00, closed on Saturday, Sunday and bank holidays.)

What happens if my holiday is cancelled?

In the unfortunate event your holiday is cancelled, you will be covered for certain reasons for cancellation with Admiral Travel Insurance. Depending on the level of cover you choose - Admiral, Admiral Gold or Admiral Platinum Cover - you could receive up to £5,000 to cover the costs of your trip.

Annual Multi Trip Travel Insurance

If you travel several times a year, it would be worth investigating annual policies. Multi trip insurance policies will cover you for a 12 month period for a set price which allows multiple trips of up to 31, 45 or even 62 days individual duration, depending on which policy you choose (maximum 31 days for ages 70-74 years). If you plan to take a longer trip, these policies are not suitable, you will require our Long Stay Single Trip policy for journeys of over 45 or 62 days.

You can buy Annual cover as an individual, or for a couple or family . Significantly discounted annual prices are available to couples and families. The levels of cover ensure peace of mind and protection for you and your family.

These policies cover a good range of sports and activities and some give the opportunity to upgrade to include cover for the more extreme activities , such as  trekking and sports such as rugby and polo. Requests for cover for some of these activities may need to be referred to our underwriters for consideration and may incur additional cost and conditions.

Navigator Silver, Pearl, Gold and Diamond Annual policies can cover wintersports and cruising at extra cost. Maximum age 74 years on Annual Multi-Trip cover.

Please note that it is best if you set the start date of your Multi Trip cover as soon as you require cancellation cover for any pre-booked trip. On a Single Trip policy, you are covered for cancellation as soon as the policy is issued, but on Annual Multi-Trip cover, nothing is working for you until the start date that you choose.

We have a choice of several Annual policies, with a cover level to suit you, providing either worldwide travel insurance or just for the European area.

Navigator Silver, Navigator Pearl, Navigator Gold or Navigator Diamond Annual Multi-Trip Policies

These policies cover Motorcycling (on-road up to 31 days per trip) at no extra cost. Wintersports and cruising cover is optional and at extra cost. Maximum trip duration is 45 days, with the option to increase to 62 days at a supplement. Maximum age 74 years on Annual Multi-Trip cover (no age limit on Short Stay Single Trip policies).

Frequently Asked Questions:

How often can i travel abroad on an annual multi-trip policy.

We do not restrict the number of trips during the year, only the maximum individual trip duration is restricted.

What is the longest duration trip that can be covered on an Annual Multi-Trip policy?

Navigator Travel Annual Multi-Trip policies will cover trips of 31, 45 or 62 days, depending on which of our policies is used.

What happens if I go for longer than the maximum permitted duration on an Annual Multi-Trip policy?

You should not embark on a trip which is known to be longer than the permitted maximum. Longer trips should be insured separately on a suitable long stay Single Trip policy. If you inadvertently overstay the maximum period, we may be able to issue After Departure cover for the extended period, but this brings additional complications.

Can hazardous sports or working abroad be covered on Annual Multi-Trip policies?

We have Annual policies that will cover working abroad, and many sports and activities can be covered, some incurring additional cost.

What is Annual Multi-trip Travel Insurance – and why do you need it?

Annual Multi-trip Travel Insurance is a type of policy ideal for frequent travellers who take two or more trips a year.

Research from Which? found that Annual Multi-trip Travel Insurance often offers better value than buying separate Single Trip Travel Insurance policies, especially if you’re planning two or more trips annually.

With this type of insurance, you’re continuously protected against unforeseen events such as medical emergencies, trip cancellations, lost luggage, and more, providing peace of mind throughout a twelve-month period.

  • Hassle free : Cover for all your getaways with one annual policy instead of arranging new insurance each time you travel

  • Easy to renew cover : You can renew your Annual Multi-trip Insurance each year, making sure you have the same continuous cover for all your trips. You only need to complete the medical screening process once, and you can easily renew for the following year. You’ll then have another 12 months of hassle-free travel.

Letitia Smith

“Annual Travel Insurance could be just what you need if you go abroad regularly. If you travel more than once a year, an annual policy can save you time and money compared to buying separate cover for each trip. As well as offering unlimited trips to your chosen region for a whole year, policies include all the benefits of Single Trip Travel Insurance, such as cancellation cover, protection for your personal possessions, and cover for travel delays or personal liability.”

Frequently Asked Questions on Annual Multi-Trip Travel Insurance

How does annual travel insurance work.

Annual Travel Insurance covers you for multiple trips within 12 months, offering convenience and peace of mind throughout your travels.

Once you buy an annual policy, you’re covered for an unlimited number of trips during the policy period (be sure to check your policy). This type of insurance includes benefits such as emergency medical expenses, trip cancellation, travel delays and unforeseen circumstances.

However, Annual Travel Insurance does not cover travel outside your chosen region, although you can upgrade your policy at any time.

Is it better to get Yearly Travel Insurance?

This depends on how many trips you take each year.

If you’re taking multiple trips within a year, an annual policy can work out cheaper and will save you the hassle of arranging Single Trip Insurance each time you travel.

How much is holiday insurance for a year?

Annual Travel Insurance lasts for a whole year and will cover trips up to the maximum duration shown on your travel documents. If you’ll be travelling for longer than this, a Single Trip policy can cover holidays of up to 365 days.

When should you buy your Annual Multi-trip Insurance policy?

We would recommend buying Annual Multi-trip Insurance as soon as you book your holiday,

Money saving expert Martin Lewis also recommends this. He urges people to buy travel cover as soon as possible as “so many of the things you can claim for can happen before you go on holiday”.

The start date of your Annual Multi-trip Travel Insurance policy will be the date your cover begins. This offers you protection leading up to any trip you take and between each trip you take.

Why can Annual Multi-trip Travel Insurance be better value than a single trip?

Annual Multi-trip Travel Insurance can offer better value than a single-trip policy because it covers multiple trips over a year, rather than just one.

So, if you’re going on several holidays within a year, an Annual Travel Insurance policy could be of better value.

With an Annual Multi-trip policy, you only need to select your preferred cover region, not every country you plan to visit. You’ll then be covered for any trip you take to the region throughout a 12-month period.

However, there are restrictions on the length of time you can be away for any one trip.

Can you get Annual Multi-trip Travel Insurance for a group trip?

Yes, our annual cover is available for groups of up to 10 people.

Any adult named on the policy can travel independently as many times as they like throughout the year, without the need for the entire group to go on holiday together.

When does an Annual Multi-trip policy start?

You can choose the start date of your Annual Travel Insurance, up to 60 days from the date of buy.

However, you should be aware that there will be no cancellation cover for your trip until the policy begins, so if you want to be fully covered it’s best to start the policy as soon as you’ve booked your holiday.

Do you need extra cover for sports and activities?

AllClear policies provide cover for most holiday sports and activities as standard. From hiking and cycling to scuba diving and camel riding.

Please check the policy documents for the full list. If your chosen sport or activity is not featured, please contact us for more information.

Is a GHIC card enough to cover Annual Multi-trip Travel Insurance?

A GHIC (Global Health Insurance Card) only provides access to state-provided healthcare within the European Economic Area (EEA) and Switzerland.

While it offers valuable medical cover during temporary stays abroad, it is not a substitute for comprehensive Travel Insurance.

Annual Multi-trip Travel Insurance provides a wide range of benefits beyond healthcare, including cover for trip cancellations, lost baggage, travel delays, and more, making it essential for complete protection during your travels.

What is Annual Multi Trip Travel Insurance?

Annual Multi-trip Travel Insurance is designed for people (from £ ), Couples or Families (from £ per Family) who undertake two or more trips within a 12 month period. Multi trip travel insurance allows you to take as many trips as you like and stay covered all year long. It means that you're sorted in one go for the next year and lock in todays price for the next 12 months. You can then focus on organising your trips.

Can I buy Annual Travel Insurance Now?

We know that right now you need to select your destinations carefully based on your own Government advice and that of your chosen location, but it's important to stay protected with travel insurance if you have any booked trips. Buying annual policy will keep you protected against cancellation risks even before you travel - like illness (including catching Covid within 14 days of travel, or while you are away), accidents, death, jury service, redundancy. We recommend that you select an immediate start date for your yearly travel insurance if you have any booked holidays to protect.

Top Tip: Choosing annual multi trip travel insurance also means you don't need to worry about amending your travel insurance if your trip dates change - as long as they fall within the policy cover period and your geographical area hasn't changed and your trip length doesn't exceed your chosen policy maximum duration.

Can I buy now for a future Date?

Unlike most other Travel Insurance providers, you can buy a Globelink Annual Trip Insurance policy up 4 months in advance! Most other major companies only allow you to buy up to one or two months ahead of time.

What's the benefit? You lock in todays price and avoid any future price increases. You buy now and can set your start date up to 4 months in advance when you are likely to be travelling more than you can now (just as long as you know that you won't get the benefit of Cancellation protection until your policy starts).

SPECIAL OFFER

* Kids go free on all our Annual Multi-trip policies. Up to 4 kids aged 17 or under, plus infants under 2yrs old - all go free!

* Couples get an automatic discount when you buy an annual travel policy.

What About Covid Cover?

ALL our annual policies provide Emergency Medical, Repatriation and Cancellation & Curtailment cover if you contract Coronavirus, provided your Government legally permits you to travel. You are not covered if you travel against a compulsory/legal ban imposed by your Government (unless you have a permitted reason to travel).

Should you travel to a country that your own Government advises against travel for reasons either directly or indirectly due to Coronavirus, you can still buy insurance and your cover will remain valid for all insured events that are NOT Covid related. So if you need to cancel or curtail your trip, or have a medical emergency that is NOT Covid related - you have peace of mind that cover remains in place. You wont be covered for claim costs associated with Coronavirus where your Government advises against travel to your destination - such as FCDO 'Amber' and 'Red' locations for UK residents (unless you have a legally permitted reason to travel). Always check your Government restrictions and those of the location you plan to visit before booking and travel.

Please note, Claims related to a Positive Covid-19 test result can only be considered when certified by an independent authority. Examples of this are: a private Covid testing provider’s official certificate, or the medical report of a Doctor’s administered Covid-19 test result. The written confirmation must include the name of the person for whom the test relates to, the date of the test and the test result. The insurer will not accept photographs of a Lateral Flow test taken at home unless it has been independently verified.

Globelink Covid Cover Includes:

  • COVID-19 Cancellation Cover (positive test within 14 days of travel)
  • COVID-19 Curtailment Cover (positive test on your trip)
  • Additional accommodation and travel costs where authorised by the 24 hr Assistance Service
  • Emergency Medical Costs and Medical Repatriation where authorised by the 24 hr Assistance Service
  • Compulsory Quarantine Cover (as a result of your personal medical condition on Dr's advice - not area restrictions ).

What is covered with Annual Multi-Trip Travel Insurance?

Our annual multi-trip policies provide Comprehensive cover and unlike some of our competitors - we don't expect you to pay extra for certain benefits like Cruise Cover and Covid Protection. We also offer individual trip durations up to 120 days (under 65's). We don't set any maximum days abroad like our competitors - so you can travel as many times as you like, as long as each trip stays within your chosen trip destination.

Our annual policies cover :

  • 10 Million Medical and Repatriation Expenses
  • up to 120 day trip durations

For UK residents it's the FCDO advice - check here for full details . The FCDO have announced a new traffic light system for categorising international travel risk and rules and each red, amber and green list are separately listed. Green is deemed the lowest risk. Check here  for details. Before you travel, check your Government advice and that of the location you are travelling to and follow the rules.

Annual travel insurance could save you time and money if you’re going away more than once this year. Fly off as many times as you like without having to worry about getting insured for each trip. That’s one less thing to think about when planning your next holiday!

What is annual travel insurance and do you need it?

Annual holiday insurance is one policy that covers you for every trip you take over 12 months. It gives you a whole year of protection on your holidays, meaning you’re covered if you have a medical emergency or someone steals your belongings.

You tell us the areas you want to travel to and any activities you want included, then we provide the right policy for you. What’s more, we offer family annual holiday insurance , cover for extreme sports , and business travel policies .

  • Tick it off your to-do list for a whole year: Sort it once and you don’t have to think about it again for 12 months. Plan unlimited trips within your chosen region. You’ll be covered on your yearly holiday insurance as long as your circumstances haven’t changed
  • The more you travel, the more you save: If you’re planning more than one trip this year, you could save time and money with annual travel insurance. Going away lots? The cost per trip will work out as even less!
  • Tailor your policy to you and your trip: Our policies already have over 100 sports and activities covered . If you’re doing something a little bit different, you can add extra cover for activities like extreme sports , winter sports , cruises and golf
  • Unlimited adventures: From a last minute weekend away to a once in a lifetime adventure. Trips within your chosen policy area are covered as long as they are no longer than our duration limit
  • Flexibility is just a click away: Buy an annual policy and want to add on new parts of the world or activities? No problem, manage your policy online or give our team a call

Make sure you check the policy wording to see the full terms and conditions and details of what is and isn’t included.

Is it better to get annual travel insurance?

It is often cheaper to get annual trip insurance than to buy two or more single trip policies over a year.

If you’re only planning on going away once, you may find that our single trip travel insurance is better for you.

It’s not just the hospital costs that rack up if you become ill while on holiday, getting back to the UK can also be expensive. The ABI reports that a holidaymaker in Thailand had a bill of £250,000 when they became ill with a serious blood infection. This included an air ambulance to get them home.

How does annual travel insurance work?

Annual holiday insurance works by providing cover for multiple trips over a one-year period. Buy your policy before you travel and you don’t have to let us know when you set off on your next adventure. You’ll only need to get in touch if your medical situation changes, or if you want to travel outside of your chosen area.

If you do need to make a claim when you’re away, the policy remains in place for any future trips within the 12 months it covers.

What does InsureandGo’s annual travel insurance cover?

It’s important to choose the right annual travel insurance for you, find out what is and isn’t covered with our policies:

The excess and amount of cover available varies depending on the level of annual travel insurance you buy. Make sure you check the policy wording to see the full terms and conditions, including what is and isn’t covered.

What’s not covered?

We aim to provide as much cover as we can on our policies. However, there are some situations no travel insurance will cover. For example:

  • You cannot cover events or reasons to claim which took place before you booked the trip or purchased insurance. Insurance exists to cover unexpected events outside of the insured’s control
  • Claims which are less than the excess for that section of cover. For example, you cannot claim a £40 lost item if your baggage excess is £60
  • All of our annual travel insurance policies include cover for cancellation of your trip, but there may be some exclusions. For example, you won’t be covered to cancel if you simply decide not to go

To check the policy exclusions and what is and isn’t included, take a look at our policy wording .

It can save you time and money and means you’re ready for any last minute trips with no added hassle to sort your cover.  With cancellation cover, over 100 sports and activities included , and our 24/7 emergency medical helpline, you get all the benefits of a single trip policy for a full year of adventures.” Letitia Smith – Travel insurance expert

Annual travel insurance with pre-existing medical condition cover

You must declare your pre-existing medical conditions when you buy annual travel insurance. We will ask you some simple medical screening questions to determine your quote.

If you don’t declare your medical conditions, if anything happens related to that condition while you’re abroad, you won’t be covered and may be liable for the medical costs.

If your health changes during the time your annual travel insurance policy is active, get in touch as soon as possible. For full details, read your policy documents or our page on pre-existing medical conditions .

Frequently asked questions on annual multi-trip travel insurance

Is annual travel insurance cheaper than single trip.

If you’re planning on going away more than once in the coming year, it’s often cheaper to buy an annual travel insurance policy. However, if you only have one holiday planned, our single trip travel insurance may be better for you.

When does annual travel insurance start?

Annual travel insurance covers you from the date you choose when buying the policy. Unlike a single trip policy, which covers cancellation from the moment of purchase.

We recommend starting the policy as soon as you have booked your trip, or as soon as your current policy expires.

Does annual travel insurance automatically renew?

Once you’ve had your travel insurance for a year, we’ll make sure you stay covered by automatically renewing your policy (unless you ask us not to).

We’ll write to you at least 21 days before the renewal date, and tell you about any changes to the premium or the policy terms and conditions. If you don’t want your policy to auto-renew, contact us. You can tell us about any changes to your details or opt out of automatic renewal at any time.

Can I cancel my policy?

If you decide the policy isn’t right for you, you can cancel your annual travel insurance during the ‘cooling-off’ period. You must write (either by email or letter) to us within 14 days of buying your policy or the date you receive your policy documents, whichever is later.

If you haven’t travelled on the policy or made a claim, cancelling within 14 days means we will refund the policy in full.

How much does annual travel insurance cost?

The cost of an annual travel insurance policy depends on many factors, including:

  • Where you’re travelling to
  • Any pre-existing medical conditions
  • The right level of policy cover for you
  • Any policy add-ons you need

It is quick and easy to get a quote online or call us on 0808 281 0594.

How long does annual travel insurance last?

An annual travel insurance policy will last 365 days, covering unlimited trips to your chosen region. Find out how long each trip can be below.

How long can I stay abroad on an annual policy?

Each individual trip can last up to 31 days for Budget policies, 45 days for Silver and Gold policies, and up to 55 days per trip for Black policies. If you want to be abroad longer than this, you’ll need our long-stay travel insurance .

How many times can I travel on an annual policy?

As many times as you like! Our annual travel insurance covers you for unlimited trips over the one year period. Don’t forget, there’s a limit on how long each trip can be: 31 days for Budget policies, 45 days for Silver and Gold policies, and up to 55 days for Black policies.

How many times can I claim on annual travel insurance?

Under your policy, you will be protected on each trip you take. This allows you to submit a claim each time you travel, regardless of the number of trips you’ve taken, or if you’ve previously claimed on this policy before.

Does annual family travel insurance cover individuals?

Yes, all adults on a yearly family travel insurance policy can travel independently. Meaning you can use the same policy to cover trips without your family within the same region. Children under 18 need to be travelling with an adult named on the same policy as them in order to be covered.

Does annual travel insurance cover cancellation?

Yes, all of our annual multi trip insurance policies cover cancellation of your trip, up to £10,000 per person on Black policies, for certain reasons outside of your control.

You cannot claim if you cancel because you changed your mind and don’t want to travel, but you may be able to claim if you cancel due to a medical condition following the advice of a medical professional.

Please read our policy documents for more information and full details of what is and isn’t included under cancellation cover.

Is a GHIC card enough to cover annual travel insurance?

It’s important to also have travel insurance in place for your trip. EHIC and GHIC cards do not cover all medical costs, including medical repatriation, and the scheme doesn’t include all countries. Find out which are included on the NHS website .

Travel insurance will also provide protection for things like unexpected cancellation of your trip, legal expenses or the loss or theft of your belongings. Buying a travel insurance policy, even when going on holiday in a country covered by the GHIC card, is recommended for these reasons.

Travelling holds the promise of adventure, cultural immersion, and unforgettable experiences. Still, amidst the excitement of planning multiple trips throughout the year, it is essential to prioritise safety and security. Annual travel insurance stands as a beacon of protection for frequent travellers by offering comprehensive coverage and peace of mind against unforeseen challenges and emergencies that may arise along the way. In this comprehensive guide, we delve into the intricacies of annual travel insurance and uncover its benefits, coverage options, considerations for travellers, and insights into finding the right policy to suit your needs and preferences.

Annual travel insurance serves as a lifeline for frequent travellers by providing year-round coverage for an unlimited number of trips within a specified period. Unlike single-trip insurance, which offers protection for a specific journey, annual travel insurance offers continuous coverage, allowing travellers to embark on multiple trips throughout the year without the need to purchase individual policies for each trip. This combines convenience, flexibility, and cost-effectiveness for travellers who frequently explore different destinations or embark on business trips.

One of the primary benefits of annual travel insurance is its comprehensive coverage, which extends to a wide range of risks and uncertainties that travellers may encounter during their journeys. This coverage typically includes reimbursement for emergency medical expenses incurred abroad, ensuring that travellers have access to quality healthcare services without facing exorbitant costs. Additionally, annual travel insurance offers coverage for trip cancellations or interruptions due to covered reasons such as illness, injury, extreme weather, or unforeseen events, thereby safeguarding travellers’ financial investment in non-refundable travel expenses.

Moreover, annual travel insurance often includes benefits such as coverage for lost, stolen, or delayed baggage, as well as compensation for additional expenses incurred due to travel delays, and assistance with emergency evacuation or repatriation in the event of serious illness or injury. By providing comprehensive protection against a wide range of risks and challenges, annual travel insurance allows travellers to explore the world with confidence and knowing that they are prepared for whatever adventures may come their way.

Annual travel insurance offers a range of coverage options tailored to meet the diverse needs and preferences of frequent travellers. These options may include:

Emergency Medical Expenses: Coverage for medical expenses incurred during any trip taken within the policy period, including hospitalisation, doctor visits, prescription medications, and emergency medical evacuation or repatriation.

Trip Cancellation/Interruption: Reimbursement for non-refundable travel expenses if any trip needs to be cancelled or is interrupted due to covered reasons such as illness, injury, or extreme weather.

Baggage and Personal Effects: Compensation for lost, stolen, or delayed baggage, including reimbursement for essential items and personal belongings.

Travel Delay: Coverage for additional expenses incurred due to unexpected travel delays, such as accommodation, meals, and transportation.

Emergency Assistance Services: Access to 24/7 emergency assistance services, including medical referrals, travel arrangements, and guidance on navigating unfamiliar situations.

By selecting coverage options that align with their specific needs and preferences, frequent travellers can ensure that they have comprehensive protection against the risks and challenges of their adventures.

Annual travel insurance works by providing comprehensive and continuous coverage for frequent travellers throughout the duration of a year. Upon purchasing an annual travel insurance policy, travellers are covered for an unlimited number of trips within the specified period, typically ranging from 12 to 365 days. Throughout the year, travellers can embark on multiple journeys, whether for leisure or business purposes, without the need to purchase individual policies for each trip.

In the event of unforeseen and untimely circumstances such as medical emergencies, trip cancellations, lost baggage, or travel delays, travellers can contact their insurance provider for assistance and support. The insurance provider will assess the situation and determine the coverage applicable to the specific circumstances, providing reimbursement for medical expenses, compensation for non-refundable trip expenses, assistance with lost or delayed baggage and other benefits as outlined in the policy. By offering continuous coverage for an entire year, annual travel insurance ensures that frequent travellers can explore the world with confidence, knowing that they are protected against any unexpected challenges that may arise during their journeys.

When selecting annual travel insurance, there are several considerations and insights that frequent travellers should keep in mind to ensure they choose the right coverage for their needs. Firstly, it is essential to assess your coverage requirements based on factors such as destination preferences, anticipated trip frequency, activities planned, and personal health considerations. By understanding your coverage needs, you can select a policy that offers comprehensive protection against the specific risks and challenges you may encounter during your travels.

Additionally, travellers should carefully review the terms and conditions of the policy, including coverage limits, exclusions, and any conditions that may affect your eligibility for coverage. Reading the fine print and understanding the details of the policy is essential to ensuring that you have a clear understanding of what is and is not covered, as well as any limitations or restrictions that may apply.

Furthermore, travellers should consider the reputation and reliability of the insurance provider when choosing annual travel insurance. Opt for reputable insurance companies with a track record of excellent customer service and reliable claims processing to ensure that you receive prompt assistance and support in the event of emergencies or disruptions during your travels.

Annual travel insurance is ideal for frequent travellers who embark on multiple trips throughout the year. This type of insurance provides year-round coverage for an unlimited number of trips within a specified period, combining convenience, flexibility, and cost-effectiveness for those who frequently explore different destinations or undertake business trips. Travellers who take three or more trips a year can benefit from the continuous coverage and comprehensive protection offered by annual travel insurance, ensuring that they are prepared for any unforeseen emergencies or disruptions that may arise during their travels.

Additionally, yearly travel insurance is well-suited to individuals who prioritise convenience and prefer to have their insurance needs covered for an extended period, eliminating the hassle of purchasing individual policies for each trip. Whether it is for business, leisure, or a combination of both, annual travel insurance provides peace of mind and security for frequent travellers, allowing them to explore the world with confidence and resilience.

Annual travel insurance is essential for individuals who embark on multiple trips throughout the year, offering comprehensive coverage and peace of mind against the uncertainties and challenges of travel. Unlike single-trip insurance, which provides protection for a specific journey, annual travel insurance offers continuous coverage for an unlimited number of trips within a specified period — typically a year. This provides convenience, flexibility, and cost-effectiveness for frequent travellers, eliminating the need to purchase individual policies for each trip. With benefits such as coverage for emergency medical expenses, trip cancellations or interruptions, lost baggage, and travel delays, annual travel insurance ensures that travellers are prepared for whatever adventures may come their way, allowing them to explore the world with confidence and resilience.

Ultimately, finding the right annual travel insurance policy involves striking a balance between cost and coverage to ensure that frequent travellers have adequate protection at a price that fits within their budget. While cost is undoubtedly a significant consideration, it is essential not to sacrifice coverage or benefits in favour of lower premiums. Annual travel insurance serves as a critical safety net, offering protection and peace of mind in the face of unforeseen circumstances. Investing in comprehensive coverage can prove invaluable for frequent travellers who embark on multiple trips throughout the year.

By understanding the benefits, coverage options, considerations, and insights for choosing annual travel insurance, frequent travellers can embark on their journeys with confidence, resilience, and security, knowing that they are prepared for whatever adventures may come their way. So pack your bags, embrace the allure of travel, and embark on a year of discovery, secure in the knowledge that you have the protection and support of annual travel insurance by your side.

Your annual multi-trip cover will commence on your chosen date and will continue for the next 365 days.

Will I Be Able to Tailor my Multi-trip Policy to Suit my Particular Holiday Needs?

Yes! You can tailor your policy to suit your needs and this can include adding an additional activity to your policy, such as golf , enhanced gadget cover or winter sports .

Simply enter your details into our user friendly ‘quote and buy’ system to get your quote today.

What is Multi-trip Travel Insurance?

Purchasing an annual multi-trip insurance policy is a wise investment if you are planning to go on more than one trip abroad in a year.

Rather than buying a single trip travel insurance policy for each trip you go on, it could be more cost effective to look at the benefits offered from multi-trip holiday insurance.

What Does an Annual Multi-trip Policy Cover?

Depending on the type of insurance chosen, the multi trip holiday insurance policy is likely to include (but not limited to) emergency medical expenses, cancellation cover, legal expenses, possessions, personal accident cover, personal liability cover and travel delays.

Why Should I Choose Multi-trip Travel Insurance?

As travel is increasingly more accessible to more people, it gives a chance for travellers to go on multiple trips in a single year. So, for holiday makers embarking on a trip on their own or with friends or family, annual travel insurance becomes even more necessary.

Family Travel Insurance for Multiple Trips

With the facility to get a quote and purchase an annual multi-trip travel insurance package for all of the family directly via our website, arranging your family annual travel insurance has never been easier.

Do You Need Annual Travel Insurance?

If you're thinking of going away more than a couple of times in a year, then it makes perfect sense to invest in an annual travel insurance policy. However, if you're just going on one trip then it might be best to compare annual travel insurance with our single trip travel insurance .

Terms and Conditions apply. Please note, an excess may apply for any claim. For more details, please see the policy wording or call us on 0333 320 1240. The above amounts are based on per person.

Even if your EHIC (European Health Insurance Card) is still in date, you still need travel insurance. Your EHIC isn’t a substitute for travel or health insurance.

The EHIC entitles you to state-provided health care in the EU and the UK - but not in Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway or Switzerland.

The EHIC will cover some or all of your medical costs, but it won’t cover certain expensive costs such as airlifting from ski resorts or repatriation. If you don’t have travel insurance you will be liable to pay for these out of pocket costs.

The same rules and regulations apply to the GHIC (Global Health Insurance Card), which you can apply for once your EHIC has expired.

Therefore, we would always recommend that you purchase multi-trip travel insurance if you intend on visiting multiple countries in a year.

A pre-existing medical condition can be a long-term or short-term illness you’ve had before booking your travel insurance. By our definition, a pre-existing medical condition includes tests, symptoms, diagnosis or medical treatment.

Simply declare your pre-existing medical conditions throughout our quote process , and we can inform you if we cover your medical conditions.

If you’re unsure what can or can’t be covered and if we cover your specific medical condition, please don’t hesitate to contact us today.

We will not be able to cover your pre-existing medical conditions if you haven’t declared all these on your policy or if you haven’t paid any additional premium in full.

Additionally, if you haven’t received written confirmation from us, indicating that we will cover your pre-existing medical conditions, your multi-trip travel insurance policy may not be valid.

For more information, please go to our pre-existing medical conditions page .

Yes, you should ideally buy travel insurance straight after booking your trip. This means from the policy start date, if you need to cancel your trip for any reason covered by the policy, you’ll be able to make a claim.

Buying annual travel insurance every year is a good idea for frequent travellers because you’ll know you’re always covered if you need to cancel ahead of your trip.

Your current annual travel insurance policy will need to be valid at the time of booking your trip to ensure you are covered for cancellation. If purchasing a new annual travel insurance policy, remember to set the start date from the date of booking your trip.

Woman at airport after taking out travel insurance

If you’re looking to escape the UK winter, or if you’re saving your holiday for the height of summer, you may wish to consider travel insurance. We explain what travel insurance is and some of the best policies on the market for your holiday.

In 2022, UK residents made 71 million visits abroad. This was over three times the amount made in 2021, when COVID restrictions kept many people at home.

So if you’re part of a growing number of people spending time abroad, have you considered travel insurance? By taking out one of these policies you could be protected for lost baggage, delayed flights, and medical emergencies abroad among other unforeseen events.

In this article we explain:

  • What is travel insurance

What is travel insurance?

Travel insurance covers the cost of unforeseen events and mishaps that either stop you from going on holiday or affect you while you’re away.

Depending on the policy, travel insurance might cover you for:

  • Medical bills if you suffer illness or have an accident while you’re away
  • Cancellation of your trip for reasons outside of your control
  • Lost or stolen baggage

Policies are usually relatively inexpensive and can give you the peace of mind that your costs will be covered if something bad happens while you are on holiday.

According to the Association of British Insurers (ABI), a trade body, the average claim on travel insurance in 2022 was a little over £970. So while travel insurance won’t stop bad things from happening, but it can prevent you from having to find the money to pay for unexpected costs even after you return from your holiday.

Read more: Ten budget travel tips

Many people opt to take out travel insurance to cover potential medical care while away.

Every week, 3,000 Brits need emergency medical treatment while abroad, according to the ABI. But travel insurance isn’t just about covering medical costs. It can protect you against a range of unplanned events:

  • Cancellation or trip interruption for reasons outside your control
  • Missed transport or delayed departure for reasons outside your control
  • Personal injury and death, including medical evacuation
  • Lost, stolen or damaged items, including baggage, passports and money – check if your home contents insurance covers you
  • Accidental damage or injury caused by you

Does travel insurance cover cancelled flights?

Most travel insurers provide a basic level of cover for cancelled flights. Aviva’s travel insurance, for example, will pay out if your flight is cancelled due to an airport shutdown.

If your airline cancels your flight then you should claim a refund directly with them, so your travel insurance could cover other costs such as hotel bookings, vehicle rentals, and other possible excursions.

What are my rights during strike action?

annual multi trip travel insurance uk

If your flights are cancelled because air staff are striking, which they have over last summer, you might be entitled to compensation from the airline. But for this to apply, customers must have been given less than 14 days’ notice.

It also depends on whether the airline was at fault or not: so if it’s the airline’s staff who are striking, you should be entitled to compensation.

If you’re worried that your flights might be delayed or cancelled, you should also check your travel insurance policy.

Some policies cover you for a cancelled or delayed flight, provided you took out the policy before the strikes were announced.

But if you haven’t yet bought your insurance, you may be out of luck. This is because most insurers won’t cover you for strikes which were already known about.

What should a basic travel policy cover?

When shopping for travel insurance, you should ensure your policy comes with the following seven things as standard:

1. Medical expenses

This covers the costs of any emergency medical and surgical treatment while you’re away.

It usually costs more for cover in the US as medical bills can run into the tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars. Any treatment that can wait until you get home is not usually included.

Most policies offer cover of £1 million for medical costs in Europe. This is usually £2 million in the US.

2. Repatriation

This is where you might need to be evacuated from the country you’re visiting.

Repatriation usually happens when you need to get back home to the UK in the event of a medical emergency and is usually covered as standard in most travel insurance policies.

3. Cancellation/curtailment

This covers any travel and accommodation costs you have paid for and can’t use or claim back.

You need a good reason to cancel your trip, so make sure you double check the terms and conditions of your policy.

4. Missed departure

This covers your extra accommodation costs and travel expenses should you miss your departure due to situations outside your control.

It usually includes your car breaking down or being involved in an accident. Leaving home at the last minute won’t count.

This covers you for delays to your travel plans, such as severe weather conditions.

Delays known about before (such as strikes) won’t be covered.

6. Baggage cover

This should cover you if your baggage is lost, stolen, damaged or destroyed.

You might need extra cover for gadgets or valuable possessions as there are usually limits on separate items.

Losses need to be reported within a certain time frame and you must have a written report from your airline if it loses your baggage.

7. Personal liability cover

This should cover you if you are liable to pay damages due to:

  • Accidental bodily injury to someone
  • Or for loss or damage to someone else’s property
  • Claims made by family members or employees won’t be covered

What extra cover can you buy?

To provide a peace of mind you might be able to add the following onto your policy too:

  • Wedding cover – If you’re travelling abroad for a wedding, some providers might include an add-on which covers damage to your possessions. If you think you need something more comprehensive, then consider a separate wedding insurance policy
  • Gadget insurance – While you’re abroad you may wish to cover your laptop, phone, or tablet from theft or damage
  • Golf equipment cover – Planning to tee off abroad? Then consider cover for moving your clubs overseas. This type of add on includes cover for your equipment if it is lost, stolen, or accidentally damaged

What is not covered by travel insurance?

Travel insurance won’t cover you for a risk that is known about.

For example, if you have a long-standing medical condition that means you can’t go on holiday, your insurer might not cover you for the cancellation costs.

Insurers also won’t cover you if you have to cancel your trip for reasons within your control. For example, if you miss your flight because you woke up late, your claim is likely to be rejected.

Travel insurance is also unlikely to cover you if you have been irresponsible. For example, if you leave your valuables in your hold luggage then your policy won’t cover you if these items are damaged.

Each travel insurance policy will have specific things it won’t cover and this will vary depending on the provider. So it’s important to read the terms and conditions carefully.

What types of travel insurance can you buy?

There are two main options to choose from when taking out a travel insurance policy:

  • Single trip — covers you for one trip of a specified length only
  • Annual multi-trip — covers you for all your trips for one year (if you travel a lot this can work out cheaper than lots of single policies)

You need to make sure that either option of travel insurance covers you for where you are going, such as:

  • Europe only
  • Or the more expensive, worldwide policies (these either include or exclude the US)

But check first which exact countries providers include in their policies. For example, some policies include Turkey, Morocco, Tunisia and Egypt in their Europe insurance.

There is also specific travel insurance for backpackers, which offers extra cover for those who are likely to be away for an extended period of time or travelling to multiple destinations.

Also bear in mind that if you are doing any extreme sports like skiing or going on a cruise then you might need to buy an add-on.

When should I take out travel insurance?

It’s usually best to take out travel insurance as soon as you have booked your trip.

While many people think of travel insurance as something that covers problems while they are away, some policies cover you for issues, accidents and illnesses that stop you from being able to travel.

Cancellation is one of the main reasons that people claim on a travel insurance policy. If the cancellation happens before you have bought insurance then you wouldn’t be able to claim.

How much should I pay for travel insurance?

Your travel insurance premium will depend on a range of factors such as your age, health, type of policy, and destination. This is why an average travel insurance premium will likely be meaningless, so make sure to do your research and get a quote from several different providers before deciding on a policy.

Do I need travel insurance?

Unlike car insurance, travel insurance isn’t a legal requirement. However, it does come with a host of benefits such as cover for medical expenses.

We’ve already listed the benefits of having protection for unexpected medical costs above, and it remains pertinent if you’re travelling abroad and won’t have access to the NHS. According to the ABI, there is one recorded case in 2022 when a traveller in Thailand contracted a serious blood infection which needed intensive medical treatment. The bill eventually came up to £250,000 which was paid in full by their travel insurance provider.

Also consider that some visa applications require you to have a suitable travel insurance policy in place before you apply. If you’re applying for a Schengen visa to travel Europe you’ll need a policy in place which covers medical expenses up to €30,000 during your trip.

FAQs: Travel insurance and medical conditions

Many people solely take out travel insurance to protect themselves from medical expenses. According to the ABI, the average medical claim on travel cover is more than £1,300. Notoriously in the US, these figures run into the tens or hundreds of thousands of pounds.

So below we’ve answered some of the most common medical related questions on travel insurance:

Q. Does travel insurance cover pre-existing medical conditions?

Some insurers do provide cover for pre-existing conditions. However, it is vital that youflag these conditions during the application stage. If you don’t it could invalidate your policy.

Q. Do you need to tell your travel insurance provider if you have a new medical condition?

If there is a significant change to your personal health then you’ll need to inform your travel insurance provider. This includes being diagnosed with a new long-term illness.

Failure to do so could invalidate your policy.

Q. Can you get travel insurance if you’re over 75 with medical conditions?

Yes. In fact, there are some providers on the market which tailor their policies towards an older demographic. For example, Saga has dedicated policies for over 50s and 70s.
