Progrography

[Review] Anthrax: State of Euphoria (1988)

State of Euphoria album cover

Metal machine music, heavy on high-end production but light on personality.

Kronomyth 4.0: The metal church of anthrax.

In the late 1980s, thrash metal went mainstream. Anthrax , Megadeth and Metallica were now Top 40 bands. Maybe the success went to Anthrax’ head or maybe, like the rest of the world, they were starting to take their music more seriously. Whatever the reason, the band decided to go after a more aggressive and sophisticated sound on State of Euphoria . The results were polarizing. Some missed the band’s sense of humor (myself included), others found in the sharpened attack a source of joy.

The band brought in Metal Church producer Mark Dodson to give the music a darker edge. The songs often have an atmospheric introduction (similar to The Dark ), the rhythm section is jacked up to fourteen on a scale of 1 to 10 and the production is impossibly tight. The result, to me, feels heavily processed where Among the Living felt raw. It’s the main reason I’m not a huge fan of State of Euphoria ; everything sounds like it’s been run through the same metal grinding machine.

As others have pointed out, the most memorable song on the album is a cover of French heavy metal band Trust’s Antisocial . That’s not to say that there aren’t some really good songs on here— Now It’s Dark , Make Me Laugh , Who Cares Wins —but nothing that I’ve ever caught myself singing like “A.I.R.” or “Caught in a Mosh.” You want to marvel at the superhuman efforts of Charlie Benante and Dan Spitz, but that’s just the problem: they seem more machine than human.

Under the surface, the band’s likeable fanboy persona remains. Misery is based on the Stephen King novel, “Now It’s Dark” is an homage to the cult film, Blue Velvet . The band tackling racism ( Schism ), homelessness (“Who Cares Wins”) and religious hypocrisy ( Make Me Laugh ) is a bit much—you can’t tear down the world and save it at the same time—although at least they mercifully left the Indians alone this time.

In some ways, State of Euphoria is a bold step forward. It’s certainly their most ambitious album from a production standpoint. It also, however, requires a certain stamina to get through nine pummeling tracks of digitally processed thrash metal without losing enthusiasm for the album. The one thing left behind in the band’s move to a darker sound is the voice of Joey Belladonna, who now sounded like the lone human being in an army of machines.

Anthrax: state of euphoria (30th anniversary edition).

Before 1988, the New York City quintet Anthrax never really made a bad album, but State of Euphoria is a flawed one. Riding high on the success of Among The Living (1987), the group was under pressure to record and release new product ahead of a major tour that featured dates opening for Ozzy Osbourne. That slot had worked miracles for the band’s thrash pals Metallica in 1986 and some predicted at the time that Scott Ian et al. would be the next underground band to rise to the highest commercial heights available to an extreme metal band at the time. That didn’t happen, and the consensus from the Anthrax camp to this day lays the blame on the album.

There are moments of fun on the LP’s new anniversary edition. The opening “Be All, End All” may have inspired a few hundred kids to pick up cello, and it remains one of the greatest metal hooks of ’88 (surpassing anything from Metallica’s … And Justice For All ). But things fall apart from there. True, one can grasp the zeitgeist via “Make Me Laugh” (about Jim and Tammie Faye Bakker) and the plight of the homeless vignette “Who Cares Wins,” but these just aren’t Anthrax’s greatest moments.

A cover of French band Trust’s “Antisocial” is proof that there remained some fire in the belly of the beast. The Blue Velvet homage, “Now it’s Dark” has some get up and go, as does “Schism,” but nobody goes to bed at night humming “Misery Loves Company” or “Fīnalē.” Even the Scott Ian/Dan Spitz guitar duo, delightfully electric on previous LPs, sounds listless here, and Joey Belladonna, just a few years from exiting the group, sounds like he could have been singing for virtually any other band except for the one he was in. This is a rare case of an album being as bad as you remember it, almost reason enough to walk away from being an Anthrax fan and yet having the brains to hold on because there were better days ahead.

Expanded now with rarities that include the French language version of “Antiscocial” and the ode to life on the road “Friggin in the Riggin,” a cover of Kiss’s “Parasite” and the guitar action hero piece “Pipeline,” this edition reminds us that Anthrax could often be its best when it wasn’t trying at all. (Most of those would become available on the odds and sods piece, Attack of the Killer B’s which, like a number of Anthrax stopgaps is better than some of the proper albums.)

A second disc, from drummer Charlie Benante’s archives gives us all a bird’s ear take on the record as it evolved—or didn’t. It’s an interesting bit of band history for a record that never quite lived up to the hype and compromised (momentarily) the band’s legacy. The follow-up, 1990’s Persistence of Time didn’t exactly regain footing, but it had some more cohesive moments and paved the way for 1993’s brilliant Sound of White Noise .

Some have a sentimental attachment to State of Euphoria –one that can still be appreciated by remembering your tattered 1988 cassette copy and leaving it there. Your money is better spent on a live ticket or any number of recent Anthrax albums you may have overlooked.

Anthrax: State of Euphoria 30th Anniversary Edition Review

MTV threw their support behind the band. Headbangers Ball invited Anthrax to host the show and visited the studio where writing sessions for State of Euphoria unfolded. Cameras trailed the band around New York City as the five musicians visited NYC landmarks.

Headbangers Ball also sponsored their U.S. tour with Exodus and Helloween. MTV even filmed a humorous commercial to promote the tour.

Behind the scenes, Anthrax were less than enthusiastic about the new record. The band later conceded that State of Euphoria wasn’t “finished.” Determined to participate in the Monsters of Rock tour with Iron Maiden, they rushed to complete the album before the stadium dates began.

While Anthrax harbored reservations, fans found no flaws. They embraced the new record with open arms. The band also earned new fans thanks to videos for “Anti-Social” and “Who Cares Wins.” New converts joined the converted as Anthrax hit the road.

To celebrate the 30 th anniversary of State of Euphoria , Anthrax have released a deluxe edition of the 1988 classic. Available as a 2 CD or 2 LP set, collectors may wish to purchase the limited edition red and yellow vinyl.

Packaging unfolds to reveal vintage photos and Anthrax magazine covers. It’s amusing to read the headlines. “MORE NEVER-SEEN GUNS N’ ROSES PINUPS” and “THE MOST OBNOXIOUS POISON INTERVIEW EVER” capture the spirit of 1988. Somehow, in this climate of pop-oriented glam rock, a thrash band like Anthrax was deemed popular enough to land on the cover.

A booklet includes vintage band photos and liner notes. Several pages of fan quotes talking about State of Euphoria ’s impact add a personal touch.

Recent years have found the band voicing negative opinions about the album. They have forgotten that State of Euphoria is beloved by Anthrax fans. Perhaps the band will take the quotes to heart and add neglected tracks from 1988 to the current setlist.

Disc two is where the fun begins. Titled “Charlie’s Archives,” listeners get to hear the writing process unfold from inside the rehearsal room. Every song except for “13” is represented. Charlie bangs out riffs on a practice amp before homemade demos morph into professionally recorded instrumental takes.

A few tracks stand out. In the studio demo, the haunting cello from “Be All, End All” assumes a more prominent role. Rather than disappear after a few solitary measures, the cello plays along with guitar, bass, and drums.

It’s intriguing to hear songs without a polished production. “Make Me Laugh” is a great example. The sound is raw but organic. The power of the intro riff somehow got diminished in a professional studio.

“Finale” is yet another standout in Charlie’s Archives. Unlike the first eight tracks, we are treated to a blistering live version. Performed during the State of Euphoria tour, the refrain “Over, finished, gone, done, out,” make “Finale” the perfect closer. There is ample energy in the performance and the audience sounds absolutely rabid. It’s perplexing that the song was dropped in future tours. “Finale” is custom built to close a show.

CD listeners will want to let the final track play through after Joey Belladonna says goodnight to the crowd. After several minutes of silence, we are treated to Anthrax commentary and the band goofing around while playing cover songs.

The statements are a continuation of an interview with the clever title “Statements of Euphoria.” Rather than devote a track to Anthrax talking, clips are spread out over disc two. Band members choose their favorite tracks, discuss filming the “Anti-Social” video, and plug the Oidivnikufesin VHS.

Both discs are a trip down memory lane. Deluxe versions of Spreading the Disease and Among the Living are already out of print. Anyone wishing to own a 30 th  anniversary edition of State of Euphoria is advised to make a purchase immediately.

This completes the releases this year from the so-called ‘Big Four’ (that’s Megadeth , Slayer , Metallica and Anthrax to the uninitiated), and in my opinion the best has been saved for last.

More instant than Among The Living , State Of Euphoria is without a doubt Anthrax’s finest work to date. No long drawn out marathons here, just hard hitting powerful slices of metal with that unmistakable Anthrax sound, and even the production can be commended this time around.

From the catchy rifferama of the opening song, ‘Be All, End All’, the listener really is dragged into a state of euphoria from which there is no way out. ‘Out Of Sight, Out Of Mind’ and the current single ‘Make Me Laugh’ are all sharp and to the point both musically and lyrically, with the latter reminding me a little of Metal Church with its crunching riffs.

‘Antisocial’ is a strong studio cover of the Trust song stamped with that distinctive Anthrax sound, while side one’s closer ‘Who Cares Wins’ winds up slowly from a quiet intro into a frantic dash to the end.

Side two is even better. The powerful ‘Now It’s Dark’, the excellent ‘Schism’, with its onslaught of razor sharp riffing, and the pounding of ‘Misery Loves Company’ all shine through with flying colours. The latter is a prime example of the longer instrumental breaks that Anthrax are now injecting into their songs, which allows guitarist Dan Spitz more opportunities in the soloing department; all for the better in my opinion.

‘13’ is a short mayhemic instrumental blur which in all honesty I find a complete waste of time, but the last song on the album, ‘Finale’, is possibly Anthrax’s best ever. A real powerhouse of a track, with the occasional injection of thrash, and a superb vocal performance from Joey Belladonna. ‘Finale’ offers a fitting climax to the year’s best release so far. Ignore all the hype and the image; just buy, listen and enjoy.

More instant than Among The Living, State Of Euphoria is without a doubt Anthrax's finest work to date.
