Singapore, Bali & Australia

15-NIGHT ONE-WAY SAILING FROM SINGAPORE

Balance the heat with the beat of Bali

With a day in Darwin, a late-night stay in Airlie Beach, and an overnight in Bali, this one-way voyage from Singapore to Sydney seeks out world wonders unique to the Far East and the South Pacific — from rainforests to glowing reefs, you'll find pristine beauty both on land and underwater.

The Virgin Voyages Experience

From captivating coasts to laid-back island vibes, the exclusively adult cruise vacation of your dreams is here.

Hassle-free embarkation

Pre-upload your travel docs to the Virgin Voyages app, get Ready to Sail before leaving home, and make boarding a (sea)breeze in just a few minutes.

Repositioning cruise

More time to sea the world. More time to enjoy aboard. More memories to make. Explore diverse countries in 15 days on a one-of-a-kind, one-way voyage.

Late stays and overnights

No more rushing from A to Sea. Our itineraries feature late stays and overnights, so you can explore it all from morning to night (and morning again).

Keeping it local

We’ve teamed up with locals in each of our ports to reveal sides of places you’ve yet to explore — from the people who know the destinations best.

The places you'll go

A tiny but mighty island-state, Singapore's food scene goes from hawkers to Michelin, the experience involves temples and the world's largest gin collection.

Benoa, Bali

Set on the Balinese southeastern coast, Benoa can be as intense or serene as you like. Whether you want to unleash your inner explorer or explore your inner self.

Swaying palm trees and scorched red soil, water attractions and crocodile interactions, indigenous art and modern museums.

Drawn by eucalyptus trees, a lush rainforest, and the Great Dividing Range mountains, Cairns is definitely an Australian hotspot.

Airlie Beach (Queensland)

A tiny, palm-dotted, walkable town and a magnet for backpackers, divers, and sunseekers — Airlie Beach is a vibrant, hostels-cafés-and-beachwear-shops-filled gateway.

Gaze at the iconic Sydney Opera House and the Sydney Harbour Bridge, walk the historic Rocks district, or hit the trendy Bondi Beach.

An ocean of opportunities calling your name.

There’s nothing more liberating than having the freedom of charting your own course. No pre-assigned seating, no fixed schedules, no limited options, no nonsense — just a shipload of opportunities to rejuvenate your body and transform your soul.

WANDERLUST SATISFIED

Singapore, Bali & Australia

We’re making waves from the Caribbean to the Med, the Adriatic to the Red, and everywhere in between across 4 continents. Join us on an unparalleled journey of relaxation and indulgence, and discover the things — and the people — that make each destination so special. Because we didn’t build a cruise, we created a voyage.   Get a delicious taste of the modern romance of sailing that only a Virgin brand could pull off.

Book Now. Pay Monthly.

A flexible, pay-over-time solution, up to $375 in value, add a splash for your bash, limited-time cruise deals.

You deserve a vacation. And you deserve a deal. So we’re making both of those things happen. Wave goodbye to your routine and start planning an exclusively adult experience at sea.

Rest Your Head

These are the spots you might be calling home. Whether you prefer coffee (or cocktails) overlooking the waves, or waking up late in your own cocoon, we're holding space for you.

Always Included Luxury

Over $1000 in luxurious value included — so all you have to do is kick back and have the relaxing vacation you deserve. Everything below is included.

From refined dining to relaxed casual, all of our 20+ eateries featuring menus curated by Michelin star chefs are yours to enjoy.

Soft Drinks & Water

Browse, post, and stay connected with wifi — whenever you want, and wherever you are on the ship.

We've taken care (of taking care) of your servers, so we cover the gratuities for your onboard experiences.

Enjoy a fascinating exploration of Singapore with a sightseeing trip on the Singapore River, admiring landmarks such as the Esplanade, Marina Bay Sands and the symbolic Merlion statue. Discover Chinatown and take walk through several districts teeming with landmarks of Singapore's colonial past. Tour Gardens by the Bay, a sprawling waterfront garden and nature park and close your experience with a memorable dinner at the 1930’s style Grand Shanghai restaurant.

NOTE: Please advise the Destination Team via Reservations or Guest Services in advance of your travel of any seafood allergies or dietary restrictions. Once in Singapore changes to the dinner menu on Day 3 may not be possible.

Upon arriving at the Singapore International Airport, you will be met in the public arrivals area just outside of baggage claim and transferred to your hotel – the Fairmont Singapore or similar hotel.

Check in time is 3:00pm. Rooms may or may not be ready before this time. Guests with early arriving flights may wish to book an extra night to ensure a ready room upon your arrival.

Lunch and dinner are on your own.

After breakfast, you will be met by your guide for an introductory tour to discover the multi religion and culture of Singapore.

Begin with an exploration of Waterloo Street where you will find several well-known landmarks, including the Kwan Imm Thong Hood Cho Temple, Maghain Aboth Synagogue, Sculpture Square, and Sri Krishnan Temple. The Maghain Aboth Synagogue is the oldest synagogue in Singapore and was built by the local Jewish community in 1878. Here you will experience how the locals adapt to each other’s culture and religion.

Next take a walk along Albert Street which was originally lined with two-story shop houses, and was famous for its Chinese restaurants, bars, medicine shops and food stalls. You can still see some of the old traditional retail shops within this area.

You will also see the business district that is responsible for the nation's fiscal security and drive through the historic Padang or colonial area. Have your camera ready as architecture and foliage combine to create the perfect backdrop for you to capture the landmarks of Singapore's colonial past.

Continue with a visit to Chinatown where you will walk through its alleyways and visit the Chinatown Heritage Centre. Housed within 3 traditional shop houses, each level of the Heritage Centre takes you to a different period in the history of Chinatown, and allows you to trace the lives of its early occupants. The hard life of the migrants resulted in many of them seeking solace in the four evils: opium smoking, prostitution, gambling and secret societies.

For lunch the group will dine at a local Chinese seafood restaurant – perhaps you will try the famous Singapore Chili Crab!

After lunch board a colourful riverboat and enjoy a 30-minute ride down the Singapore River. In Raffles’ days, the riverboats carried goods. Today, they are a popular way to experience a kaleidoscope of historic river and harbor images, including the “godown” warehouses, the shophouses, the six bridges built by the British and the gracious buildings of the old waterfront set against the towering skyline of the new business district.

The day wraps up with a visit to Arab Street, the old center of the Malay community. Today, Arab Street is abundant with glittery and lavish fashion items that include the finest lace, sparkling semi-precious stones, ostrich feathers, iron-on diamantes, gold thread, wholesales bales of silk and organza with dazzling rainbow hues and intensities. Traditional rattan is also sold in little India’s street shops, and the beautiful gold-domed Sultan Mosque is located here.

After this comprehensive and enlightening tour of the city, you will return to your hotel to enjoy the remainder of the afternoon at your own leisure or you may choose to stay in the city and make your own way back to your hotel. Dinner is on your own today.

After breakfast at your hotel you will be met by your guide for your tour to “Gardens by the Bay”. These Gardens capture the essence of Singapore as the premier tropical Garden City with the perfect environment in which to love and work – making Singapore a leading global city of the 21st century.

Underlying the concept of Gardens by the Bay are the principles of environmental sustainability. Comprising two glass biomes, the Conservatories replicate the cool-dry climate of the Mediterranean and semi-arid sub-tropical regions and the cool-moist climate of the Tropical Montane region.

They house a diverse collection of plants that are not commonly seen in this part of the world and are of high conservation value. The conservatories are a statement in sustainable engineering and apply a suite of cutting-edge technologies for energy-efficient solutions in cooling.

Visit the Cloud Forest, a mysterious world veiled in mist. A 35-metre tall mountain covered in lush vegetation shrouding the world’s tallest indoor waterfall showcases plant life from tropical highlands up to 2,000-meters above sea level.

Next, step into the Flower Dome and you will marvel in awe of nature as well as the spectacular and innovative designs. The Flower Dome replicates the cool-dry climate of Mediterranean regions.

You may wish to stroll along the Skyway and take in a view of the Gardens from above. (there is a separate fee to walk along the Skyway)

Truly a spectacular and colorful national icon, Gardens by the Bay will capture the imagination of everyone who visits.

Next, visit the top of the iconic Marina Bay Sands Hotel – SkyPark Observation Deck. Expected Weather:

Singapore is known for its hot and humid weather, with little variation throughout the year. The average daytime temperature is 31ºC (88ºF), dropping to around 24ºC (75ºF) in the evenings. The monsoon season can bear down pretty heavily on our tropical weather from November onwards, so be prepared for rain on a daily basis during this period.

What to Bring:

When packing, keep in mind that you will be in the tropics. Light, cool, and casual clothing is recommended all year round. For more formal occasions, men should wear jackets, ties, or long-sleeved batik shirts whereas women should wear dresses.

Local Currency:

The currency used in Singapore is the Singapore dollar (S$). Money changing services can be found not only at the Singapore Changi Airport but also at most shopping centers and hotels around the island. You can also access the automated teller machines (ATMs) located everywhere (even in the most obscure bits) in Singapore, that accept most of the main credit cards such as Visa, MasterCard and American Express.

Electricity

Singapore's electricity voltage is 220-240V with ac, 50 cycles per second. Generally, the electricity outlets are three-pronged - two parallel flat pins with a ground outlet. You may purchase adaptors in any of the hardware stores or rent one from the hotel. We recommend travelling with your own international adaptor should you have electric devices.

Documents and Visa Requirements:

Visitors must have a valid passport or internationally recognized travel document valid for minimum 6 months beyond the date of entry into Singapore.

Guests are required to submit an electronic Singapore Arrival Card within three days prior to arrival into Singapore. They are not permitted any earlier. Please follow instructions on this website https://eservices.ica.gov.sg/sgarrivalcard/ or through the official “MyICA” mobile application. Submissions are free of charge.

Just outside Cambodia’s Siem Reap, a unique and thrilling adventure awaits you in the jungles of Angkor, where you can uncover the rich history and grand architecture of the Khmer Empire. Obscured by dense vegetation for centuries, the glorious temples of Angkor comprise one of the world’s largest religious monuments. The most famous is the enormous Angkor Wat, whose soaring walls are covered with intricate carvings. You will also pass through the imposing gates of Angkor Thom, the last capital of the Khmer Empire, to explore the renowned Bayon Temple.

Please note:

-There is extensive walking over uneven ground at the temple sites - at times up to 2 km, with steps at Bayon and Angkor Wat. This tour is not suitable for guests with walking difficulty or if confined to a wheelchair. It can also be very hot and humid there.

-Cambodian visa fee is included in the tour and will be applied upon arrival at Siem Reap Airport

-Flight schedules are subject to change thus the tour sequence may vary

-Special Note: Any guests travelling with Portable Oxygen Concentrators (POC) or CPAP breathing machines should read further below for airline stipulations with regards to bringing this equipment on tour.

After flying into the Singapore International Airport, you will be met outside of Customs and transferred to your hotel. Check in is at 3:00pm, and while every effort will be made to have rooms available earlier, this cannot be guaranteed. Should you have an early arrival time you may wish to book an extra night so that a room is ready upon your arrival.

You will spend the remainder of the day settling in and enjoying the amenities at your hotel or the sites of the city. Meals are on your own today.

Following check out you will transfer to the Singapore International Airport. Upon arrival, proceed through check-in for your flight to Siem Reap. You will be accompanied on the flight by a representative from our local ground agency.

On arrival in Siem Reap you will be met and assisted with obtaining your Cambodian Entry Visa. You will then proceed to the Angkor Site to collect your temple passes which are required for touring. Once this has been issued, board your coach for the transfer to your hotel for check-in and lunch on your own.

NOTE: Your passport will be kept by our program operations team in order to process the visa on arrival and for exit procedures on departure day. Your passport will be safely returned to you on Day 4.

Later in the day, venture to the Angkor Wat Temple Complex – the highlight of this program. You will have approximately 2 hours to explore its archaeological treasures with your guide before returning to your hotel.

Your guide will point out the best spots for taking photos of this massive temple complex as you walk amidst the moss-peppered cobbled pathways, gaze up at the intricately carved tower tops and perhaps climb the steep and narrow temple steps that lead to wide courtyards. Lose yourself in contemplation as you catch the rays of the sun dancing off the bas relief carvings at sunset, the chatter of monkeys reverberating off the temple walls.

Return to your hotel for an evening at leisure and dinner on your own.

Following breakfast, you will venture to the city of Angkor Thom including the renowned Bayon Temple built in the 12th Century, the Terrace of the Leper King and the Elephant Terrace, a sandstone wall covered with carved hunting scenes and three-headed elephants.

Continue to visit the un-restored temple of Ta Prohm which is famous for its forest atmosphere and enormous fig trees. This temple looks just as it did when the first European explorer arrived. It is also the location of many of the scenes filmed for Angelina Jolie’s huge blockbuster movie, Tomb Raider.

Lunch will be served at a local restaurant and after lunch visit Artisans d’Angkor, a school for underprivileged youth where they are taught the ancient crafts of wood and stone carving, creating lacquer ware, painting and silk weaving. Stroll through the school to watch young Cambodian artisans learning a trade and continuing age-old traditions. Many of the students’ crafts are offered for sale in the school store, ranging from beautiful silks and stunning lacquer ware to elegant stone and wood carvings. All the proceeds go towards the running of the school.

Continue to look around The Old Market (Phsar Chas) - the most popular with tourists and visitors, offering the greatest selection of souvenirs, textiles, handicrafts, statues, and curios of any of the traditional markets.

Back at the hotel, enjoy dinner and an Apsara cultural show

Overnight at the Borei Angkor Resort or similar hotel

Dependent on flight departure times from Siem Reap, enjoy breakfast at the hotel before checking out and settling any incidental charges that you may have incurred. Then transfer from your hotel to Siem Reap Airport for the flight back to Singapore.

Upon arrival you will be met and assisted on to your transfer from the airport to the ship for embarkation. Any excess luggage left in Singapore will be taken directly to the ship where you will be re-united with it once on board.

Hot and Dry. The average mid-day temperatures can hover to upper 30s C (85-90 F), especially in inland areas like Siem Reap. It is less breezy at this time of year. The sun can be quite intense and the air becomes hazier with the rising humidity. Though sometimes quite hot, the lack of rain still leaves this good time of year to visit the temples.

On this tour the key words are comfortable and casual. Remember we are visiting a foreign country and local dress codes should be observed.

*Please avoid uncovered shoulders, shorts or revealing clothing.

*Full length trousers or pants and/or skirts covering the knees are required to be worn when visiting Angkor Wat

Although dinners are not formal, you may want to bring something a bit dressier for that time of day.

Bring a hat or a head covering for sun protection and don’t forget your sunscreen, sunglasses and bug spray (you should have mosquito repellent for sunrise and sunset hours). It’s also a good idea to bring along a small packet of tissues or wet wipes. It is also suggested that guests wear flat comfortable walking shoes (not sandals or open toed shoes / flip flops). Guest are requested to take-off their foot wear and hats when visiting religious sites.

Guests are encouraged to bring US Dollars with them as they are most commonly accepted in Cambodia. The local currency is the Cambodian Riel. You should take smaller denominations of US Dollars with you, as they will keep you from ending up with a lot of local change that you will not be able to re-exchange back home.

Electricity:

Rooms are equipped with 220-volt, two-pin US style electrical outlets. We recommend travelling with your own adaptor kits should you have electronic devices.

Water: Avoid tap water and drinks with ice in them. Drink mineral water and drinks in sealed containers. Water at the hotels in both Singapore and Siem Reap is potable.

For a program of this length and nature, we suggest no more than one suitcase per person.

Luggage Weight Restrictions: 20kg (44lbs) - Light luggage would be most suited for this 3-night trip. Please note that the airlines allow a maximum of 1 checked suitcase (20 kg or 44lbs) and one small carry on. Any additional pieces will be in excess and fees will be paid to the airline at the guests’ expense. If you wish you can store excess luggage in Singapore at the hotel. It will be sent to the ship on Day 4. Please ensure that all excess bags are tagged properly and visibly with your full name and suite number on the ship. Pack accordingly as excess bags will be collected before you leave Singapore and you will be re-united with your luggage on day 4 on board the ship. Note that Regent Seven Seas Cruises, the hotel, nor our local ground operator are liable for any lost or missing items. We do not recommend leaving valuables behind or in checked luggage. You should keep any valuables with you in your carry-on hand bag.

Carriage of Portable Oxygen Concentrators (POC) or CPAP breathing machines on internal flights per airline regulations (subject to change as each airline has their own regulations)

1. Guests must obtain a Doctor’s Certificate mentioning their medical condition and the need to carry this equipment with them on their flights.

2. The certificate should have attached a picture of the equipment with its description/specifications especially with regards to the type of batteries used (lithium/dry or any other type)

3. These documents need to be sent to the Land Program Team via Reservations at RSSC at least one month prior to travel so that our local operator can begin the notification process with the airline(s).

4. Failure to comply with the above regulations may result in a denial of this equipment at the airport for which Regent Seven Seas Cruises nor our local ground operator be responsible for.

Documentation:

Guests must carry a valid passport with at least 6 months validity and have spare pages for the Cambodian Visa. Visas will be issued on arrival in Siem Reap.

VERY IMPORTANT – The name on your cruise booking, passport and any visas if required, must all be exactly the same for flight ticket purchase for this program otherwise guests may be denied travel by flight. Please ensure that all documents are identical in spelling to the names provided for your cruise reservation including first, middle and last name. Manifests generated by the cruise line must match your travel documents.

Failure to have the required documents ahead of time or incorrect names on flight tickets will result in either denial of travel or ticket re-purchase and guests will be responsible for any fees incurred.

Travel two hours from Sydney to the magical, World Heritage, Blue Mountains. Enjoy stunning vistas and breathtaking scenery as it unfolds around you when you visit Scenic World, Mt. Tomah Botanical Gardens and King’s Tableland. Also enjoy an informative and easy hike with a National Park Ranger who will relay Dreamtime stories of the Aboriginals who first settled in this area.

Disembark the ship in Sydney and meet your guide who will accompany you to the World Heritage listed Blue Mountains National Park.

Your first stop of the day is at Calmsley Hill; a working farm also home to Kangaroos, Emus, Wombats and Koalas. Enjoy morning tea here and time to wander at your leisure.

From Calmsley Hill, continue to ascend the Blue Mountains via the highway. At the western edge of the Blue Mountains, Kings Tableland affords one of the best views in the Blue Mountains and is home to Wentworth Falls. At the falls, your guide will take you on a 30-minute walk with stunning views of one of the most iconic views of the Jamison Valley.

From here, it is then on to Scenic World, renowned for providing the ultimate Blue Mountains adventure - from native birdlife and mountain fresh air, to breathtaking views of the World Heritage-listed region including the Three Sisters, Katoomba Falls and Jamison Valley. Your options here include taking a journey on the world's steepest incline railway, glide between clifftops on the glass-floored Skyway suspended 270 metres in the air, descend into the ancient Jamison Valley by Cableway or explore Jurassic rainforest along the 2.4 kilometres walkway - the longest boardwalk in Australia.

Rejoining your vehicle, continue towards Mt. Victoria and take in the views of the Bells Line of Road before enjoying a stroll in the beautiful English styled gardens at Mount Wilson. Sitting at 850 meters above sea level, the Mt. Tomah Botanical Gardens are the most elevated gardens in Australia.

Here you will first enjoy a relaxing one course light lunch with beverage of choice. After lunch, you can enjoy an expertly curated walk through the gardens and interpretation center.

After this amazing day, you will arrive at the historic Carrington Hotel. Set on top of the mountain ridges of Katoomba, this Grand Old Lady of the west has been welcoming guests to the Blue Mountains for decades.

Upon arrival you will be joined by a Ranger who will share stories and explain the ancient traditions of one of the world’s oldest living cultures. You will even have a chance to taste the local Bushtucker. For those that want to stretch their legs, you can join the ranger for a short hike and take in the sights and smells of the Australian bush. Learn about bush foods and medicines and even taste the local Bushtucker which was used as sustenance by the Indigenous and Aboriginal Australians.

Return to your hotel via the picturesque town of Leura where you will have some time to explore the village at leisure before arriving back at the Carrington Hotel in the late afternoon. The evening is at your leisure and dinner is on your own.

Enjoy your final breakfast at the Carrington hotel before boarding your vehicle for the journey back to Sydney. En-route, travel past the beautiful orchards of Bilpin and Kurrajong and as you travel down the Mountains, phenomenal views of Sydney will unveil themselves.

Explore the must-see icons of Sydney, including the famed opera house, Royal Botanic Garden and Sydney Tower, all of which will reveal the heart and soul of this extraordinary city.

Disembark the ship in Sydney and meet your guide at the pier before starting out on your day tour of the city. Begin with a drive through the city in a luxury coach, stopping for photos of Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Sydney Opera House. Still, the best and most historical vantage point is from Mrs. Macquarie’s Chair, a stone seat that convicts hand-carved out of a rock ledge in 1810 so that the governor’s wife could enjoy the ultimate harbor view.

You will then travel to the Royal Botanic Garden, the oldest botanic garden and scientific institution in Australia, for an Aboriginal Heritage Tour. As you walk the grounds, an Aboriginal guide will describe how the indigenous Cadigal people used plants for various purposes. You many also get the chance to sample bush foods.

Continuing on to the observation deck of Sydney Tower, you will enjoy a sky-high 360-degree view of the city and beyond to the Blue Mountains. Once the tallest building in Australia, the tower soars over the city, making it easy to identify key landmarks below.

Free time follows at beautiful Bondi Beach, a stretch of golden sand that is one of Sydney’s most visited beaches, especially among surfers. While exploring, you may wish to dine on your own at one of the restaurants that rims the beach.

One more stop will be made at The Gap on the return to the hotel. The views of the Tasman Sea from atop this oceanside cliff are spectacular.

You will then spend the evening at the hotel at your leisure with dinner on your own.

Following breakfast at the hotel, you will drive to the Taronga Zoo Sydney for an Aussie Walkabout Tour of the newly opened Nura Diya precinct focusing on indigenous species where your guide will explain the work of Taronga in relation to species preservation, rehabilitation and conservation.

Experience an open walkthrough of Kangaroo Country, Dingo Country. In Koala Country travel on the boardwalk built high in the treeline and spot koalas! Your guide will be able to answer any questions as you proceed through your walkabout. End tour at the Taronga Institute of Science & Learning where you will gain insight into the world of conservation science currently being undertaken at Taronga Zoo.

You will then proceed to the Sydney Opera House for an exclusive tour, during which you will learn about its extraordinary design and why UNESCO deemed it a World Heritage site. The opera house is so iconic that it is impossible to think of Sydney without this cultural center coming to mind.

As the hotel isn’t far off, you can choose to walk back on your own and explore other attractions on the way. The evening will be spent cruising through Sydney Harbour and enjoying a sumptuous dinner. The illuminated city will look absolutely radiant as you sail along the coast.

Upon returning to the hotel, the remainder of the evening will be at your leisure.

Enjoy breakfast at your hotel and then the remainder of the day is at your leisure to further enjoy Sydney’s sights and its surrounds. Perhaps make the 2-hour journey to the scenic Blue Mountains, hop on a Sydney Harbor water ferry and explore all the stops along its route or for the adventurous do the Bridge Climb on the Sydney Harbor Bridge. The staff at the Regent Hospitality desk will be able to assist with any independent sightseeing questions you may have.

Following breakfast at the hotel, check out and transfer to the airport based on the flight details provided. For guests with late flights, luggage storage will be available at the hotel until your transfer time.

View of the street with Masjid Sultan in the background in Singapore

Singapore has four official languages and even more ethnicities that have influenced its culture. Discover the city's Muslim heritage at Sultan Mosque along Arab Street and its Chinese character (and food!) in Chinatown. Little India is the heart of the city's Tamil Indian community, while Kampong Glam is the epicentre of Malay-speaking Singapore.

Two Sides of Nature

Sculptural vegetation towers from Gardend by the Bay in Singapore

Singapore's tropical landscape is as diverse as its culture. The Singapore Botanic Garden (and adjoining Orchid Garden) approach horticulture from a more traditional perspective, while the spacey Supertrees of Gardens by the Bay would seem more at home in 'Avatar' than an issue of 'Better Homes and Gardens'.

Marina Bay Sands hotel in Singapore

Zoom In, Zoom Out

Head to the rooftop of the massive Marina Bay Sands to enjoy a panorama of the Singapore skyline, which is also beautiful as seen from the city's symbolic Merlion statue on the other side of the bay. Or visit a more inward-looking Singapore icon when you order an original Singapore Sling cocktail at the Long Bar of the Raffles Hotel.

Wantan Mee, popular street food noodles with bbq pork, in Singapore

Local Cuisine

The best way to get a cross-section of Singaporean cuisine is to visit its street vendors, or hawkers, in hubs like Tiong Bahru. Jump onboard a Singapore cruise to try Cantonese-derived wantan mee noodles, with dumplings and yellow egg noodles topped with slices of char siu pork. Snack on chai tow kway , also called carrot cake, even though it's made from rice flour and daikon radish fried with eggs in pork fat.

Colorful variety of chopsticks in a small shop in Chinatown, Singapore

Singapore is a shopper's paradise, whether you stick to the high-end boutiques of Orchard Road or the local shops throughout the city. One way to guarantee a special souvenir during your Singapore cruise holiday is to shop in the city's ethnic neighbourhoods: seek out chopsticks and lacquerware in Chinatown or incense and South India dolls in Little India.

Netflix movie of the day: Born on the Fourth of July is a harrowing movie with an extraordinary Tom Cruise performance

The movie where Tom Cruise showed he was more than just a pretty face

Born on the Fourth of July

For many actors, the pivot to Oscar-bait "serious movies" after making lots of money from more lightweight fare is a well-worn cliché. But as Roger Ebert wrote in 1989, "nothing [Tom] Cruise has done will prepare you for what he does in Born on the Fourth of July ... his performance is so good that the movie lives through it".

In Born on the Fourth July , which is now streaming on Netflix , Cruise plays Ron Kovic, who fought in Vietnam and came home paralyzed from the waist down. The film is based on his memoir, and it's directed by another veteran, Oliver Stone. What emerges is a powerful, visceral and haunting story about what happens when young men go to war – and what happens to them when they come home.

  • Watch Born on the Fourth of July on Netflix

War is hell

As Ebert explains, both Kovic and Stone were "gung-ho patriots who were eager to answer their country's call to arms". And despite everything they experienced, they returned from Vietnam as patriots – patriots who were offended and angered by the hostility they experienced from the anti-war movement. But Kovic's experiences back home were horrendous – and some of them are shown here in excruciating detail – and he began spiralling into self-destruction. The film follows him all the way to rock bottom, and sticks with him as he attempts to climb back up.

It's an extraordinary, heartbreaking film that's much smarter and more thoughtful than most war movies. Stone came to this movie after making Platoon , and Born on the Fourth of July is a kind of smarter, more nuanced sequel in its portrayal not just of the horrors of war, but the horrors of post-war life.

Pauline Kael of The New Yorker hated it, but she was in the minority of critics alongside the Washington Post , which said that while it was "an impassioned movie, made with conviction and evangelical verve. It's also hysterical and overbearing and alienating".

Variety described Cruise's performance as "stunning", and Rolling Stone said that "Stone has found in Cruise the ideal actor to anchor the movie with simplicity and strength". Time Out called it a "compelling, elegiac film, particularly encouraging after the simplified morality of Platoon ". And for The New York Times , it was "the most ambitious non-documentary film yet made about the entire Vietnam experience".
