ZIP LINE CANOPY TOUR MONTEVERDE

MEGA COMBO AVENTURA.

We specialize in canopy tour, which we have added some other adventures that will make your adrenaline go up to 100%, such as hammock bridges, rappelling cables, cable Superman and our main attraction, the MEGATARZAN SWING.

First receive a short talk with the instructions about security rules that you will have to know. Once all of your questions are answered, we can begin this exiting adventure.

After going up in a long metal staircase we will arrive to the first platform, there the guides will go over the security instructions again with every person, they will also check that the equipment is safely place and they will also tell you everything about this zip line.

Everything is ready; we can now zip through the cloud forest of Costa Rica.

Then you will go to a small hanging bridge made of wood that swings a little and then you have four more zip lines, these have different distances and elevations. After this you get to the rappel  part, where you will have the opportunity to descend vertically 15 meters, for this activity you will also be instructed by our guides.

The total tour has 12 cables and 16 platforms. We continue to fly through the top of the trees by zipping through three more zip lines, which takes us to the “Tarzan Swing”, one of the most exiting parts of the tour, at this point we will go up to a platform,

From there you will jump, 148 ft, free falling, down to the emptiness and bounce back up. In this activity you will receive help from four professional guides; two of them will be helping you jump from the superior platform and the other two will stay in the inferior one receiving you.

Once we’re done with this exploit we will take a short walk of 300 meters, which takes us to a new section of the property with two more zip lines.

One of them is 400 meters long and the other one is 700 meters, in this last one you will have the opportunity to do other of the other most adventurous activity in our tour: “ el superman.” This last segment of our tour is famous for having the most high and long zip lines, giving you the opportunity to enjoy the landscape and the beautiful nature.

Do you want to go zip lining in Monteverde and wondering what 100% Aventura is like? You’ve come to the right place!

Canopy tours are a must do in Costa Rica and something you definitely need to add to your bucket list.

While they are great things to do, I also appreciate that it can be hard to choose a specific tour because there are so many of them.

I went to Costa Rica as a travel coordinator for an adventure tour company and decided to go to 100% Aventura in Monteverde to try their epic zip lines.

In this article, I tell you everything you need to know about it and my true opinion on this experience.

They are one of the most popular canopy tours in Monteverde and Santa Elena and have the longest zip line in Costa Rica (5220 ft – 1590 m).

The full canopy tour takes between 2 and 3 hours and can be booked here.

What to expect from your 100% Aventura Experience

Now that you know about the activity itself, it’s time to discover what you will be doing. You can find below a detailed description of the experience.

1. Get to 100% Aventura

entrance of 100 aventura in monteverde

It’s important to note that 100% Aventura does not provide transportation which means you need to make your own way to the site.

If you have a rental car, it should be no problem. It only takes 10 minutes from Monteverde. You can also get a taxi which would be quite cheap since it’s a short ride.

2. Check-in at the reception desk

Once you’re there, head to the reception so you can check in. You will need to show your booking as well as your passport (a photo is fine).

You will then be asked to move to the equipment space where the instructors can set you up.

Pro tip : there are toilets next to the reception. Make sure to go before the tour since you won’t get the opportunity once they put the harness on.

3. Equipment

The instructors will set up all the harnesses on you. You don’t have to do a single thing, they do everything for you.

They will also give you a helmet that you can tighten as you wish. If you’re not sure, they will do it for you.

4. Safety talk

Once you’re all equipped, an instructor will give you the safety instructions and explain how the tour is.

After that you can get started.

5. Normal zip lines

zip line at 100 aventura in monteverde

You will start with the short zip lines to get warmed up. They are in the trees so they don’t really trigger vertigo.

You don’t actually have to do anything, there is an instructor on each platform and they do everything for you.

The only thing you have to do (if you are a short person like me) is to jump when they ask you so they can get the pulley on the cable.

Once you get to the zip line number 6, this is actually a rappel one. Again, you don’t need to do anything but this will give you a tiny bit more of an adrenaline rush, preparing you for the first big zip line.

6. First long zip line

first long zip line at 100 aventura in monteverde

The zip line number 7 is the first long one. If you don’t feel like you can do it, you can leave at that point so make sure to tell a member of staff about it.

In that having been said, it’s one of the best ones so try to breathe and go for it.

Unlike the others, this one is a lot higher and open. You’re not in the trees anymore.

While I thought this would trigger my vertigo big time, it actually didn’t at all.

The views were so amazing, I absolutely loved it.

7. Short ATV ride

ATV ride at 100 aventura in monteverde

Once you finish the first long zip line, you will jump at the back of a big ATV and the driver will take you to the first superman zip line.

Once again, you don’t have to do it if you don’t want to but it is fun.

8. Superman zip lines

superman zipline at 100 aventura in monteverde

Once you get to the first superman, the instructor will redo your harness and you will go (head first) on the zip line.

This one feels a bit scarier because you go head first but it is ultimately the same than the one before.

You don’t have to break, the zip line will do it for you but it’s a bit rough so be prepared.

You will then go back to the same spot using a zip line on the other side.

9. Tarzan swing

tarzan swing at 100 aventura monteverde

After the Supermans, you will be asked if you want to do the Tarzan swing. This one feels scarier because it’s more like a bungee jump.

If you have a bit of a fear of height, it will feel very daunting.

Personally, I said I wanted no information and just went there. Although I was petrified, I’m very glad I did it because I thought it was the best one.

You will be sent to a hanging bridge where the instructor will call you.

You then have to stand on the edge and jump.

PRO TIP: If you’re too scared you can ask the instructor to push you. I knew I wouldn’t be able to do it myself so I preferred it that way but that’s a personal choice.

Jumping is the hardest part, everything after is just fun.

I absolutely loved it and if you think there is even a bit of a chance you can do it, go for it.

In that having been said, I would never recommend pushing yourself to that extent if you know you can’t.

A lot of people choose not to do it and even if everyone else decides to do it, don’t let yourself be pressured. The staff won’t ever pressure you. You do you and that’s all 🙂

100% Aventura Review: Pros and Cons

Now that you know what to expect from this adventure, it’s time to give you all the pros and cons so you can make a decision.

Pro 1: It’s great value for money

I honestly thought it was great value for money. Costa Rica is an expensive country, especially when it comes to tours and there are quite a few things that I can say were not good value for money.

This is not one of them.

The tour costs around 60 USD which means 6 USD per zip line. In the UK, we pay a lot more for that.

If you go to Zip World in Wales, you’ll end up paying that for one single zip line.

Also, with all these instructors and how easy they make it, I can genuinely say it was worth every cent.

Con 1: It’s not for everyone

If you are really scared of height and don’t like adrenaline experiences, this probably won’t be for you.

I do have vertigo but that’s something I like to fight and it doesn’t leave me completely petrified. If that’s your case though, it’s probably not for you.

Pro 2: It’s a lot of fun

I can honestly say this was one of the best activities we did in Costa Rica. It was so much fun! Everything is made so you have the best time.

Con 2: Some of us got bruises

This is not the case for everyone but I think it’s important to mention it.

While I didn’t have the issue myself, some of my friends got pretty big bruises from the harnesses.

Ultimately, you’re hanging in the void and only the harness holds you so that puts quite a bit of pressure on your skin and if you bruise easily, you will probably have some.

Pro 3: The staff is amazing

I loved the staff. There were so many instructors. Literally, one or more at each zip line.

They do everything for you so you never have to stress about doing something wrong.

You can simply focus on enjoying the experience.

They are also very friendly, understanding and never pressure you.

Pro 4: It’s beautiful

The views of the canopy and rainforest are simply stunning. Whether you’re in the trees or on the highest zip lines with views over the valley, it will take your breath away.

Pro 5: The zip lines are very long

As mentioned before, some of the zip lines are very long (around 1,500m) which means you get to enjoy the experience for longer and it feels worth your money.

They claim to have the longest zip line in Costa Rica which is quite a statement but there are actually 3 really long zip lines, not just one.

Pro 6: There is no waiting time

Since you book a specific slot and go one by one on the zip lines, there is no waiting time.

You can simply enjoy the experience without having to wait for others or feel rushed.

Pro 7: Non-participant can still wonder around

If someone in your group is not participating in the activity, they can still come and wait for your friends/family.

The grounds are beautiful and there are a few walking path in the forest. It’s very pretty.

They can also walk to the Tarzan swing (at the bottom) and see you jump.

Pro 8: They take photos for you

There are photographers throughout the tour who will take photos of you as you go on the zip lines.

You can then purchase these photos at the end (for an additional cost) but it’s a great way to capture your experience without having to worry about taking photos yourself.

Is 100% Aventura worth it?

Absolutely! It was one of the highlights of my trip to Costa Rica ! We all had so much fun and would do it all over again many times.

The views were amazing, the staff was incredible and it’s great value for money. It’s also very easy to book online.

Tips to make the most of your zip-lining experience in Monteverde

Here are some tips to enjoy the tour canopy experience.

  • Wear comfortable and appropriate clothing for outdoor activities. Closed-toe shoes are a must as well as trousers.
  • Photographers will take pictures of you but if you have a phone with a strap that you can carry securely, you are allowed to take it. My phone was laced up around me and in my T-shirt so every time I’d finish a zip-line, I would take photos of my friends behind me.
  • Go to the toilet before since you can’t during the tour
  • Make sure to put mosquito spray on before
  • Opt for an early tour (like 8AM) so it’s quieter, the sun is low and then you still have the whole day to enjoy

Other zip-lining tours in Monteverde worth considering

While I definitely recommend 100% Aventura, there are another couple of canopy tours in Monteverde that are worth checking out. Here they are.

100% Aventura: 2 Km Ziplines, 45 Meter Tarzan Swing and More Fun

August 28, 2017 By Sammi 17 Comments

Want to go ziplining? What about 100% Aventura? It’s a lot of fun! Guido asked Yeison and I. Guido, the manager of Hotel Poco a Poco was trying to help us decide what activity to do for our last day in Monteverde. I looked at Yeison and said sure why not? We’ve seen their shuttles around Monteverde and Santa Elena before, with big letters on the side boldly stating “Longest zipline in Latin America!”

Since we normally take these statements with a grain of salt (it seems every canopy tour in Costa Rica claims to have the longest zipline), we didn’t think about it too much, assuming it was like the other ziplines in Monteverde we’ve done.

Boy were we wrong!

100% Aventura’s canopy tour truly lives up to its name with an action packed, adrenaline filled zipline that will leave you breathless and in awe by the end.

100% Aventura Zipline

The canopy tour started off nice and easy, like most others. The first couple cables were short and sweet, giving people particularly first timers the feel for ziplining and enough time to get comfortable. Around the 5th or 6th platform, we did a short rappel which led us to the 7th cable, the start of the long ziplines.

The cables are so much longer and faster than the first ones that they had to put up a sign warning visitors that this is their last chance to turn back (the canopy tour is sectioned off so in case you find yourself not able to continue, you can step down and walk back to the headquarters).

100 Aventura Monteverde Zipline

But the last two ziplines are hands down, the best and most fun we’ve done. If you’ve ever gone ziplining, you’ll notice that after you do a few cables in the normal sitting up right zipline position, you find yourself feeling like you want a little bit more.

This zipline tour gives you exactly that as you get to go superman style on the two longest cables meaning you are lying down, held up by two harnesses from your back. Appropriately named, as you feel like Superman flying through the sky!

Superman Ziplines

But before you go superman-ing over the forest, you have to get up to the platform by way of a buggy. Four of us climbed into the 4×4 and as soon as the door closed, our driver hit the gas and sped off into the forest on a very bumpy and overrun trail in the trees for about 5 minutes. He stopped abruptly, running out to open the door and quickly usher us to the trail. Doing things fast seemed to be the motto of the 100% Aventura zipline tour!

As we climbed up the platform, I could hear cries of glee coming from the people who were already soaring over the forest. I grinned excitedly, I couldn’t wait!

The first superman zipline is around 600 meters (1968.5 feet). Two people go at a time so the guide pushed me out first with Yeison following me close behind. The wind whipped around my face and my eyes widened, almost bugging out as I felt weightless, flying over the cloud forest with the sun shining brightly above me. I glanced wildly around me and laughed crazily. This was amazingggg! I cried out.

600 meters felt like forever and the last cable was even longer, around 1.5 kilometers! (4921 feet). 100% Aventura definitely designed their canopy tour with adrenaline in mind. The first 600 meter cable was long enough for people to get a taste and the 1.5 meter long superman cable was the cherry on top of the already fun zipline.

Check out the short video of us on the superman ziplines!

The tour certainly wasn’t over when we finished the zipline. We still had one more crazy adventure to go on before we could call it a day – the tarzan swing! The 100% Aventura tarzan swing height is a whopping 45 meters!

This is optional but I knew I couldn’t pass it up. I saw the platform on the 2nd superman zipline and the swing looked insane. I knew I had to do it!

100% Aventura Tarzan Swing

However, I underestimated 45 meters which is almost 150 feet or around 10 to 15 stories. (For reference, the Golden Gate Bridge is 250 feet). It doesn’t sound that tall but when I got up to the bridge, I balked. As I walked onto the platform, I clutched my harness tightly and took a slow deep breath. You can do this, Sam. You can do this. It’s just a little hop into the forest and that’s it. Nothing crazy, nothing life threatening.

After I said those words, I made the mistake of looking down. My knees buckled a little as I squinted down at the tiny trees that looked like broccoli from this height. OK maybe I still have time to turn back…

Vamos! T he guide yelled at me. Venga! He gave me a pointed look which I could see even being 30 feet away. Of course he’s impatient. He’s had to throw 20 of us off this bridge already and there were still 10 of us to go! There was nothing left to do at this point but to keep going forward. It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity, when else would I get to do something like this right?

I bundled up my courage and determinedly walked to the guides where they proceeded to clip, fasten, tie and pull the rope and my harness together. They were going so fast I could hardly tell when I was ready until he opened the little door and yelled Lista!

Wait! OK no ready? OK go! I hopped off the platform (or did he push me?) and immediately felt the wind knock out of me. Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

I’ll never forget the time I willingly jumped 150 feet down into the forest in Costa Rica. You can see the proof below!

When it comes to adrenaline filled ziplines, 100% Aventura in Monteverde wins by a long shot. Yeison and I have both gone ziplining in Costa Rica numerous times but none this high or fast. The views for 100% Aventura are not quite as nice as Sky Adventures or Selvatura Park (those are the only two actually over the cloud forest) but it’s definitely one of the best canopy tours in Monteverde.

100% Aventura also has hanging bridges, an ATV and horseback riding tour. You can book and make reservations for the tours on their website. They include transportation from Santa Elena in case you don’t have a car.

The Sweetest Way

A Dose of Adrenaline With 100% Aventura

Ziplining with 100% Aventura, Monteverde, Costa Rica

Following our relaxing but seriously inspiring nature walk in the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve , Mak and I were ready to turn the adrenaline up a notch.

While there are a number of adventure tour companies operating in Santa Elena offering everything from leisurely hikes to badass canyoning tours, the choice to do a canopy tour with 100% Aventura ( aventura = adventure ) was made simple enough–according to the folks at our hostel, it was easily the best value in town.

Their tour boasts the longest zipline in Latin America measuring a whopping 1590 meters (or 5,216 feet…nearly a mile long!) and a massive Tarzan Swing at the very end, just in case your heart’s not already beating out of your chest.  If you’re not sure what a Tarzan Swing is, don’t worry–you’ll find out soon enough.

Since carrying your camera during the canopy tour isn’t highly encouraged, I strapped on the ol’ GoPro and managed to get some pretty beautiful footage of our day.  I don’t know if you guys know this, but Costa Rica is REALLY green.

Ziplining with 100% Aventura, Monteverde, Costa Rica

First, we hit the shorter ziplines…

…Followed by the longest zipline in Latin America; we were in a face-first superman position for this one (I opted to leave the audio on this next video so y’all can hear me talking to myself like a crazy person).

Ziplining with 100% Aventura, Monteverde, Costa Rica

Do one thing every day that scares the total sh*t out of you.

Ok, so maybe that’s not exactly what Eleanor said.  But the message is the same.  The ziplining was easy enough; now, in order to protect my reputation as an adventurous traveler, I had to face my real fear.

I had to conquer…the Mega Tarzan Swing .  Maybe it’s just me, but there’s something unsettling about being hurtled toward the ground with nothing but a stretchy rope to save you from meeting a grisly end.  Needless to say, I was NOT convinced this was a good idea, but somehow I took the plunge anyway.

Tarzan Swing, 100% Aventura Monteverde, Costa Rica

Warning:  If you’re watching this with audio, be prepared to turn the volume down just before the 1:05 mark.

It may  not be obvious from all the screaming, but I actually really enjoyed the Tarzan Swing.  Would I do it again?  It’s possible.  Am I glad I faced my fear?  Absolutely.  Am I ready to take on bungee jumping next?  Uhh, let’s not get carried away.

So, that was our day with 100% Aventura!  This tour costs $45 (USD) and runs for about 3 hours including travel time to and from your hotel (pickup is included).  We thought it was a great value and a lot of fun.

Are you an adrenaline junkie?  Would you go ziplining through the Costa Rican jungle?

What Visitors Say

It was by far the coolest thing I have ever done in my entire life. We were truly about the tree line and into low clouds from the mountains. The line that was about a mile (just under) was honestly incredible, no words can even describe it!

Amazing experience, we saw a lot of diversity in flora and fauna, and specially we were able to observe two different types of Toucans, but all experience was amazing, the guide tour very professional and extremely knowledgeable and kind.

I went today with my mother, and we did all of the zip line including Superman and Tarzan. we had so much fun and felt very safe. the staff was extremely friendly and helpful. The tour was so super fun even though I am afraid of heights.

I won’t give away too much, but the canopy tour is unreal. I was a bit reluctant to do zip lining as we aren’t those kinds of tourists, but this is a perfectly built facility, intertwined with nature. Amazing Adrenalin rush, big focus on safety.

Super fun! I tend to think ziplining is a little anticlimactic, but the superman zipline and the Tarzan swing are something I'll remember forever. The crew gave good instructions in the beginning, so you felt safe and knew exactly what to do.

Wonderfully thrilling ziplining in La Fortuna. This company is very organized and the lines are great - over waterfalls and offering many open vistas - perhaps longer and faster than we'd expected, but what a thrill. Our 7 yr old went zipping with a guide. They kept us flowing along. Loved the hilly trails and woods. "Ronny" was our main guide. He and the other gals were great. Definitely recommend this tour.

Aventura

Bachata group Aventura has kicked off its Cerrando Ciclos tour, and the band — led by frontman Romeo Santos — is singing all the fan favorites.

The first show took place in Sacramento, Calif., on May 1 with a sold-out show at the Golden 1 Center arena. With his band — comprised of Henry, Lenny and Max Santos — in tow, Romeo performed all the anthems, from “Dile Al Amor” to “El Perdedor” and “Por Un Segundo,” that gave Aventura the moniker “the Kings of Bachata.”

Romeo Santos Reunites with Aventura for 2024 Cerrando Ciclos Tour: See The Dates

The last time Romeo Santos, who launched his solo career in 2012, and Aventura went on tour was right before the COVID pandemic for their 2020 Inmortal Tour, which grossed $25.8 million and sold 189,000 tickets among 15 shows between Feb. 5 and March 10, 2020, according to figures reported to  Billboard Boxscore.

About Cerrando Ciclos, Romeo Santos said in a statement: “This year there is something I must accomplish and conclude. I want you to join me on a journey where I will be definitively closing cycles. Because it is not the same to remember beautiful times as it is to be a prisoner of the past. We cannot stagnate in the nostalgia of yesterday, but rather move forward, discover new horizons, and show other facets.”

Produced by CMN Events, the Cerrando Ciclos swing continues with stops in major markets like Chicago, Las Vegas, Nashville and Miami. The U.S. stint will wrap Aug. 3 in Hidalgo, Texas, before the group treks over to Spain for seven shows. Subsequently, they’ll head to Puerto Rico for six shows at the island’s Coliseo de Puerto Rico.

Explore Russian Summer Life: Visit Russian Dacha!

People from Northern countries soak up every bit of pleasure out of summertime. Its days are numbered, and we do our best to store up the sunshine for the long, cold months that make up the rest of the year. Russians are among those who take full advantage of the brief, hot weather.

At summer’s peak, many Russians don’t venture far. The reason is dachas , our country houses. August brings the harvest for our small garden plots, but a dacha is much more than just an economic benefit: it embodies a culture dating back to Communist times.

Apple season, Traveler from Hong Kong

The dachas is a unique phenomenon in the life of anyone who lives in the boundless expanses of the Russian Federation. A small plot – just 0.15 acres – with a few currant bushes, apple trees and a vegetable patch, a little wooden house with no telephone or running water and a discreetly located outhouse. I’d love to how you mine.

How we’ll get there:

I believe that it’ll be fun to experience the Russian suburban train (electrichka), which is very popular in our country. Electrichka is inexpensive and it might even be faster than a car as it doesn’t depend on the traffic. Travelling by commuter train you’ll be able to see ordinary people and possibly talk with them. Sometimes trains offer you such “free entertainment” as listening to numerous vendors and musicians. But local trains might be crowded at certain times of the day so in some cases we’d recommend you to go with us by car.

What we’ll do:

We start the trip with the tour of Dmitrov , an ancient Russian town, founded in 1147 and called Moscow younger brother. It is located 1 hour drive out of Moscow.

Mushroom hunting

Learning how to prepare a Russianlunch:

Samovar for making tea

First you choose the right meat, then the right recipe for the marinade. The fire has to be started and allowed to burn down until it’s almost out, but still smouldering. If you catch it at that moment, then the meat will roast evenly and not burn.

Meanwhile, the fire keeps threatening to go out, compelling family and guests to furiously fan it with pieces of cardboard. We serve sashlik with baked potatoes, pickled vegetables and of course Russian vodka. Lunch is followed by traditional Russian tea drinking .

You’ll be so involved, you won’t even notice when it’s time to go back to the city.

The tour cost is 200 USD.

Tour price is for 2 people but I can accommodate up to 6 people in this tour, however the price will change.

Transportationis extra.

Best time to travel: June for the “White Nights” Best gateway city: Moscow and St. Petersburg, Russia Moscow and St. Petersburg Slide Show

Experience the art treasures of Moscow and St. Petersburg with guide, Amy Osaki. Begin in Moscow, continental Europe’s largest city, the seat of the government of Russia, and now home to over twenty billionaires! View iconic sites such as the Kremlin (which began as a fortress in the eleventh century), Red Square, and the sixteenth century St. Basil’s Cathedral. Then explore the art masterpieces at the Tretyakov Gallery, the National Museum of Russian Fine Art encompassing works from the eleventh to the twentieth century. Visit the Armory at the Kremlin filled with Imperial treasures including Faberge eggs once exchanged by the tsar and tsarina at Easter. Conclude your Moscow experience at the quiet seventeenth century Novodevichy Convent, one of many World Heritage sites included in the trip.

After a short flight, continue the trip with five days in St. Petersburg where you’ll be immersed in the opulence of Imperial Russia. Established by Tsar Peter I in 1703, St. Petersburg (known as Petrograd and Leningrad for most of the twentieth century) was the capital of the Russian empire for over two hundred years until the Russian Revolution of 1917. The Hermitage—said to be the largest art museum in the world with a collection of over three million objects housed in four main buildings—rivals the Louvre in Paris for both the quantity and quality of its treasures. Founded in 1764 by Catherine the Great, and open to the pubic for over two hundred years the museum is so vast that we’ll spread our visit out over several days and organize it by different themes. Also on the schedule is a visit to the Peter and Paul Fortress—the original citadel above the river founded in 1703—as well as some of the Imperial palaces in and around St. Petersburg such as Peterhof, a World Heritage Site. Peter I hired French architects to work on his many palaces, including Jean Baptiste Le Blond who worked with Andre Le Notre at Versailles. Consider enhancing your Russian experience by purchasing tickets to a performance—perhaps a ballet at St. Petersburg’s Mariinsky Theatre (also known as the Kirov).

Day 1 Overnight in Moscow Arrive in Moscow and transfer to your centrally-located hotel, your base for the next two nights. Enjoy an afternoon and early evening walk through Red Square (Krasnaya Ploshchad) past St. Basil’s Cathedral, and GUM department store all of which are back-dropped by the walls of the Kremlin fortress. Remember that we are here during the fabled “White Nights” when the summer days linger with light-filled evenings.

Day 2 Overnight in Moscow Within the walls of the Kremlin fortress, visit the Armoury Museum, one of Moscow’s oldest museums established at the start of the nineteenth century. The Kremlin Armoury was the royal arsenal; it produced and stored the weapons, jewelry and other regalia of the tsars. The museum’s collection encompasses four thousand items of applied art from Russia and elsewhere dating from the early fourth century to the twentieth century. Later in the day, visit the collection of masterpieces of the renowned Tretyakov Gallery. The Tretyakov collections were begun by the philanthropist Tretyakov brothers in the early nineteenth century. The gallery is recognized by many as a key repository of Russian art spanning the nation’s artistic tradition from early Orthodox icons to art nouveau, impressionist, and avant-garde works.

Day 3 Overnight in St Petersburg Enjoy a morning visit to the sixteenth century Novodevichy Convent named a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2004. The convent’s name is sometimes translated as “New Maidens’ Monastery” to differentiate is from the convent within the walls of the Moscow Kremlin. Surrounded by white crenellated walls, this complex of churches has remained essentially intact since the seventeenth century. Here you’ll find the five-domed Cathedral of Our Lady of Smolensk with its spectacular iconostasis and the tall, red and white Gate Church of the Transfiguration which is often cited as a fine example of “Moscow Baroque” architecture. The neighboring Novodevichy Cemetery is the final resting place of the likes of Anton Chekhov, Sergei Prokofiev, Dmitri Shostakovich, and Boris Yeltsin. This afternoon fly to St. Petersburg, Russia’s second largest city situated on the banks of the Neva River where it empties into the Gulf of Finland.

Day 4 Overnight in St Petersburg Start of your exploration of St. Petersburg with a visit to the Peter and Paul Fortress, the original citadel of St. Petersburg. The fortress was built to the designs of the Swiss Italian architect Domenico Trezzini in the early eighteenth century. Trezzini’s Peter and Paul Cathedral dominates the fortress grounds and its iconic golden spire punctuates into the Baltic sky. Later visit the Yusupov Palace on the Moika, acclaimed as an “encyclopedia of St. Petersburg aristocratic interior design.” The palace was the home of the Yusupov family from 1830 and 1917 and was the place where Grigori Rasputin, a spiritual mentor to Tsar Nicholas II and the Royal Family in the early 20th century, was assassinated. A visit to the Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood built between 1883 and 1907 rounds out the day. The church was built in “Russian Revivalist” architectural style by Tsar Alexander III in commemoration of his father, Alexander II. The church occupies a conspicuous location on St. Petersburg’s Griboedov Canal and contains 7,500 square meters of mosaics; the interior walls and ceilings are completely covered by mosaics.

Day 5 Overnight in St Petersburg Seeing St. Petersburg’s Hermitage Museum in a day would be like trying to see the Smithsonian in a day! Rather than a forced march through the galleries at a rapid pace, we will slow down and savor the masterpieces. Remember, there are nearly seven miles worth of exhibitions! Today we focus on “Imperial Russia,” touring the rooms decorated for members of the Russian Imperial Family and viewing the art they commissioned and collected. This is the art that influenced the style of the grand palaces of the era. View the Grand Suite of rooms, Peter I’s collection of gold, and the jewelers art owned by the Russian Imperial Family (including Fabergé eggs, gold and diamonds). Here, too, are the rooms of Catherine II and her son Paul I with their fifteenth to eighteenth century French paintings and sculpture (Poussin, Watteau, Fragonard, Chardin, and Houdon).

Day 6 Overnight in St Petersburg Return for a second dose of the Hermitage! Today is dedicated to the famous European masterpieces exhibited at the Hermitage. Feast your eyes on memorable works by Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael, Michelangelo, Tintoretto, Tiepolo, Velazquez, and El Greco. At the Hermitage, you can revel in Rembrandt; there are twenty of his works in the museum’s collection. After lunch, enjoy the eighteenth to twentieth century masterpieces of Monet, van Gogh, Gauguin, Rodin, Picasso, Matisse and Kandinsky. Digest the art and reflect on this unique collection of human creations. Consider an evening performance, possibly at the Mariinsky Theatre.

Day 7 Overnight in St Petersburg Journey by hydrofoil across the Gulf of Finland to experience Peter I’s palace at Peterhof, a series of palaces and gardens that evoke comparisons with Versailles which Peter visited in 1715. Begun in 1714 with the construction of the Monplaisir palace and expanded by later Imperial generations who added Rococo and Neo-classical elements, Peterhof is now a World Heritage Site. The creative mastery of architects, engineers, artists and craftsmen from throughout Europe is on display here and all is choreographed to celebrate water in homage to Peter, the maritime emperor.

Day 8 Overnight in St Petersburg Go behind the scenes with an excursion to the Hermitage Museum’s Staraya Derevnya Restoration and Storage Center on the right back of the Neva River north of Kamenny Island. This vast treasure house is only accessible by private tour. Later, travel to Vasilvesky Island across the river from the Hermitage to visit Menishkov Palace completed in 1721 and now the oldest stone building in St. Petersburg. Enjoy a farewell dinner this evening.
