Undergraduate Programs / Bachelor / Hospitality Management
Starting dates.
Our academic calendar is based on a quarter system (1 quarter = 10 weeks). Because of the program's flexible structure and modular design , multiple starting dates are available at the start of every Quarter, in October, January, April, July, and exceptionally also in Term B of the Summer Quarter in August. All campuses follow the same academic calendar.
Program duration
Full-time students can earn a Bachelor degree in 3 academic years of 9 months, for a total of 9 quarters of 20 credits each, or in 4 academic years for a total of 12 quarters of 15 credits each when spreading the workload.
Teaching schedule
Courses are available in various formats , including daytime courses between 8.30 and 18.30, seminar courses with visiting professors on consecutive days, and several online courses available 24/7, or any combination in a blended format . Courses are scheduled typically in sessions of 3 hours each. Connect with an admissions advisor, or refer to the course planning once enrolled to find out more about course availability in specific formats throughout the academic year.
Program language
All courses are taught entirely in English across the campus network. Students should have a certain proficiency in English when they start. Students may have English as a native language, may have had English as the language of instruction during previuos studies, may have had advanced English langauge courses during previous studies, may have an English language school certificate, and/or may have scores from standardized tests such as TOEFL or IELTS. Refer to the table below for further details on required scores for standardized tests and language school certificates (CEFRL). Depending on the submitted documentation, students may be subjected to an English test at the start of their studies. Typically, non-native speakers who studied in English before or those who had advanced English lessons during previous studies, and with sufficient confidence, perform well. Because of the multi-cultural environment, only a relatively small percentage of students are native speakers.
Study destinations
Our campuses are all located in the city center of several exciting destinations . Students are encouraged to transfer between campuses for one or more quarters, but may also choose a single campus as their destination of choice. Students who prefer shorter periods abroad can join our seminar courses taught by visiting professors at several of our campuses throughout the academic year.
Program schedule
All campuses offer identical study programs and follow the same program structures for an interruption-free experience. However, not all courses are taught face-to-face at all campuses. Some courses are organized in a hybrid format (partially face-to-face, partially virtual), and some only virtually. Some programs are therefore also only available in a blended format, with some courses face-to-face, hybrid or virtually. Blended programs (and hybrid courses) are an excellent option for independent students as well as for globetrotters travelling far beyond the reaches of our campus network.
Global study trip
Each academic year, students from all campuses in Europe, as well as students from our academic partners can join our Global Study Trip to Tokyo, Japan . The weeklong trip is packed with cultural excursions, company visits, social activities and an Asian Management seminar.
Application deadlines
Our Admissions Department applies a rolling admissions process and does not set deadlines to submit applications because of the multiple starting dates available. Applications are reviewed continuously troughout the year . Only in case a student visa is required do we recommend to apply 1-3 months prior to the intended starting date.
Admission requirements
Students should be fluent in English , and have obtained a high school diploma (or equivalent) that allows access to higher education in the country of origin. Refer to the application process for further details on the recommended English language levels.
Students who are 17 or older who have completed less than 12 years of formal education and who do not hold a high school diploma that allows access to higher education in the country of origin should earn up to an additional 60 credits in the Pre-Bachelor Foundation program. e.g. Students who wish to earn a Bachelor degree and who are required to complete the full Pre-Bachelor Foundation program will need to earn 60 + 180 credits. Please consult with our Admissions Advisors to estimate the additional credit requirement.
Program fees
Program fees are calculated pro-rata per campus where the student completed courses and earned credits. The total fees are due payable on a quarterly basis on a fixed payment schedule. Program fees cover matriculation and tuition fees but do not include the cost of living, housing, travel, transport, health insurance, study materials and other expenses. For more details, refer to the document attached.
Credit system
Bachelor degree programs consist of 180 European credits , equivalent to 120 American semester credits. Courses are assigned a number of credits, indicating the estimated workload. Each credit equals up to 30 learning hours, including contact hours, exam hours, self-study hours and group-study hours. The workload of a typical full-time undergraduate student amounts to 20 credits and 600 learning hours per quarter. The workload of a part-time student depends on the number of credits attempted per quarter.
Grading system
Students are assessed on a combination of attendance, participation, individual assignments, group assignments and exams. Assignments may include reading materials, term papers, reports, presentations, and others. The combination of these assessments provides students with an equal opportunity to demonstrate their skills and knowledge . The minimum passing grade is D (60%). In case of an FX grade, students have the option to request a second exam in order to obtain the minimum passing grade of 60%.
Honor system
Students who achieve a certain GPA ( Grade Point Average , or the weighted average of all grades earned, calculated on a 4.0 scale), will have their academic honors listed on the academic transcript issued together with the diploma.
Academic degree
Upon successful completion of the program, students receive a dual degree: a Bachelor in International Management (BIM) with a concentration in Hospitality Management , an international private degree awarded by the school's HQ in Switzerland, based on the recommendation of the faculty of the local campuses where credits were earned; and a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Global Business (BA) , a European state-recognized degree awarded by Coventry University in the United Kingdom, based on the completion of the university-validated top-up program that is an integral part of the dual degree program. Learn more about the school's academic degrees and accreditation .

Over 70 % of teaching staff work in the industry full-time and add their own practical knowledge to the theoretical orientation of the courses. Students learn from practical projects , which are organized in conjunction with businesses. They also organize events and excursions themselves.
As the only university in Austria, the program is also offered as a dual study program , in which students gain important work experience with a practical partner while they are still studying.
Excursions lasting several days in the 1 st and 2nd semesters offer an intensive exchange with tourism managers from the field. Regular expert discussions and company visits as part of TM on Tour round off the study experience.

Questions and Answers (FAQ)
Here you will find the most frequently asked questions & answers about the Bachelor’s program in Tourism & Hospitality Management.
General information:
No, no previous experience in tourism is required for the study program.
Information and numerous tips on the admissions procedure can be found here !
Recognition is only possible if the acquired knowledge is equivalent to the requirement profile in terms of content and scope of the course to be waived. Therefore, school subjects cannot be credited in principle.
The Bachelor’s program in Tourism & Hospitality Management is basically a full-time program. However, some of our students work on a part-time basis alongside their studies.
During the 6 semesters of the Tourism & Hospitality Management study program, you will have to pay approximately 550 euros in addition to the tuition fees. This includes the costs for the introductory excursion in the 1 st semester or the self-organized excursion in the 2 nd semester. However, we always try to keep the fees as student-friendly as possible.
The study content of the two programs is largely identical. Exceptions are the practical phases in the dual study program (semesters 3-6) and the specializations as well as the compulsory internship in the full-time variant.
Full-time variant:
In the first semester, you will learn about all specializations and make your selection based on this at the end of the semester. The selected specialization can then no longer be changed.
No prior knowledge is required for the specializations.
Here you can find all partner universities with which our university cooperates.
Please note, however, that not every study program cooperates with every partner university. For a semester abroad as part of your Bachelor’s program in Tourism & Hospitality Management, places are mainly available at European partner universities (e.g. in Spain, France, the Netherlands, etc.). However, we are constantly striving to expand our network for you. At the beginning of your studies, our mobility coordinator of the study area will be happy to inform you about your exact options.
You have the possibility to organize your internship yourself. Of course, we will support you in this. The Tourism & Hospitality Management study program includes a mandatory foreign component (either an internship abroad in the 4 th semester or a semester abroad in the 5 th semester). If you choose to complete your compulsory internship in Austria in the 4 th semester, you will spend the 5 th semester at one of our partner universities abroad.
After completing your studies, the entire range of work opportunities in tourism is open to you, regardless of the specialization you have chosen.
Dual variant:
A dual study program is characterized by the regular alternation between theoretical and practical phases. There is an interlocking of learning locations: academic learning location (FHWien der WKW) and practical learning location (practical company).
In the first year of study (1 st and 2 nd semesters), no professional practice takes place yet and is to be understood as the theoretical foundation of the dual study program. From the 2 nd year of study (= 3 rd semester) onwards, you will be employed by a practice partner for 2.5 days each (an average of 20 hours per week) in order to acquire the professional practice relevant to this study program. You will spend the other 2.5 days at FHWien der WKW.
In the 1 st semester, you will receive application training and an introduction to our practical partners. Our partner companies cover the entire spectrum of the tourism industry. Our practical partners include hotel companies, tour operators and travel agencies, congress companies and mobility companies.
In the 2 nd semester, the application phase begins, during which you will contact the desired companies directly. Of course, we will support you with questions regarding your application. Matching with the practical companies then takes place within the 2 nd semester before the practical phases start in the 3 rd semester.
During the first two semesters you will be full-time with us on campus. The practical phases start in the 3 rd semester. We work with the model of a split week, i.e. you spend 2.5 days (20 hours) with your practice partner and 2.5 days at the campus of FHWien der WKW.
A contract of employment is concluded between you and the practice company. The payment and salary classification are the responsibility of the company. We have no influence on this.
The following contractual regulations apply:
- Company and FHWien der WKW: Cooperation agreement
- Practice company and students: Work contract
- Students and FHWien der WKW: Learning agreement
Of course, it is possible to already “bring along” a practice company. There are criteria and requirements that must be met in order to ensure the quality of the training. In this case, please contact the study program directly.

Hotels & Tourism Snapshot | March 2024
Our latest Hotels & Tourism Snapshot (March 2024) shines a light on the ongoing, robust recovery in travel and tourism across Europe, and how this is helping to drive expansion of investment activity.
Overnight arrivals and hotel nights continue to grow across the continent, supporting hotel performance and particularly RevPAR (Revenue Per Available Room) growth in many markets.
Despite a challenging 2023 for investment in Europe, improving hotel market fundamentals have supported a relative increase in the investment market share of hotels – as of early 2024, hotel market share is at 12%, compared to a 10-year norm of around 8%. For 2024, our global investor outlook survey shows that investors favour more city-based locations, assets in the luxury/midscale segment or alternative use assets with conversion potential. They are optimistic about improving hotel capital values, and Colliers expects 2024 to be a busy year for hotel investment. Key European Trends • Overnight arrivals were close to full recovery by the end of 2023, with strong growth in holiday arrivals in recent years. Business arrivals are still below pre pandemic levels but will continue to recover this year. Arrivals from short haul markets had recovered by end 2023, while longer haul trips are currently expected to recover in 2025. • Total hotel nights had recovered well in 2023, reaching 2019 levels overall by the end of the year. Although, like arrivals, this varies across the markets examined. Summer holiday destinations are doing particularly well; and strong growth is projected in this regard in 2024 – particularly for Greece. Germany is also expected to benefit strongly from hosting the Euro 2024 championship. • Hotel occupancy in most markets is yet to recover to pre pandemic levels but is not far off in many summer holiday destinations such as Italy, Greece and Spain. RevPar however, has grown +24% on average since 2019, supported by growth in room rates in all markets - a trend mirrored in reports from key hotel operators. RevPar income has expanded in real terms to above pre-pandemic levels.
