T+L's editors have traveled to countries all over the world, having flown, sailed, road tripped, and taken the train countless miles. They've visited small towns and big cities, hidden gems and popular destinations, beaches and mountains, and everything in between. With a breadth of knowledge about destinations around the globe, air travel, cruises, hotels, food and drinks, outdoor adventure, and more, they are able to take their real-world experience and provide readers with tried-and-tested trip ideas, in-depth intel, and inspiration at every point of a journey.

Elizabeth Rhodes/Travel + Leisure

For the first time, we’re spotlighting new cruise ships on Travel + Leisure ’s It List, as these exceptional vessels become more and more like floating resorts — celebrity chefs, crystal chandeliers, and Rolex boutiques included.

Explora Journeys’ Explora I

Paul Brady/Travel + Leisure

It’s not every day a new cruise line arrives. The debut of the remarkable Explora I was a moment years in the making for Explora Journeys , the upstart luxury operator that aims to bring a European sensibility to the world of vacations at sea. So far, the project is a smashing success, thanks to the ship’s low-key vibe, standout food and beverage, and intriguing itineraries that visit in-demand ports in Northern Europe, the Mediterranean, and the Caribbean. My own August 2023 trip on Explora I , from Copenhagen to Hamburg, Germany, included fulfilling visits to places such as Oslo and the town of Stavanger, Norway, a gateway to adventurous hiking with a postcard-perfect Old Town. The ship itself was also a destination, with its abundance of outdoor space — including an alfresco fitness center — and pools at seemingly every turn. The 461 suites, all of them with balconies, are filled with luxurious touches such as Frette linens and robes, heated marble floors, and Dyson hair dryers. But Explora I truly shines when it comes to food: During the week I was aboard, it was impossible to find a bad meal — and I was often astonished at the quality of, in particular, the pasta served in the Emporium Marketplace and the sushi on offer at Sakura, two of the nine restaurants aboard. The most ambitious of them all is Anthology, a rotating-chef concept that has seen a residency from seafood whiz Mario Ulaissi, known for his Michelin three-starred restaurant on Italy's Adriatic coast, and that recently welcomed Emma Bengtsson, from Aquavit , in New York City. Much has been made of Explora I ’s Rolex boutique — the first on any cruise ship — but for my money, the other shops on board were more interesting: The company has tapped family-owned businesses around the world to create capsule collections of resort wear, handbags, fragrances, sunglasses, and beautiful gifts that can’t be found elsewhere. From $2,050 per person for a six-day sailing. Accessible ship. — Paul Brady

Oceania Cruises’ Vista

Nick Tortajada/Courtesy of Oceania Cruises

The new Oceania Vista is in a class of its own; no really, it’s the first in Oceania Cruises ’ new Allura class. Of its 11 bars and restaurants, three are entirely new to the Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings–owned brand — including a high-end cocktail spot called Founders’ Bar, serving 26 intricate drinks that use house-made syrups and top-shelf booze like Whistle Pig and parsley-infused Grey Goose. As Oceania levels up, the cruise line has produced a ship that feels more like a floating resort than the vessels that came before. There’s pickleball; a health-conscious restaurant, Aquamar, serving made-to-order salads and pressed juices; and a coffee shop that looks like one in walking distance of my home in L.A. (marble counters, gold accents, leather bar stools) and pulls an espresso shot of similar quality. Vista has more suites than others in the Oceania fleet, too: There are 14 Oceania Suites (up to 1,200 square feet); eight Vista Suites (up to 1,850 square feet); and three Owner’s Suites with Ralph Lauren Home decor and two massive terraces (2,400 square feet). But the most hotel-like touch? A celebrity chef–driven restaurant, Toscana, where Giada De Laurentiis — the ship’s godmother — supplied two recipes for the menu. As someone who watched a lot of Everyday Italian in the early aughts, I was particularly excited to try her signature, Capri-inspired lemon spaghetti, and lemon-cream sauce with grilled shrimp and capers didn’t disappoint. From $2,499 per person for a seven-night sailing. Accessible ship. — Maya Kachroo-Levine

Regent Seven Seas Cruises’ Seven Seas Grandeur

Courtesy of Regent Seven Seas Cruises

Regent Seven Seas Cruises’ sixth ship, the Seven Seas Grandeur , sailed its inaugural season in December, joining sibling ships Seven Seas Explorer and Seven Seas Splendor as the newest member of the luxury fleet. The cruise line is a favorite among T+L readers for its gorgeous ships and all-inclusive pricing that covers unlimited shore excursions, dining at specialty restaurants, and even round-trip airfare. Grandeur lives up to its name thanks to stunning, art-filled spaces designed by cruise ship interior experts Studio Dado: signature restaurant Compass Rose is enchanting with interiors inspired by a fairy-tale forest; the Observation Lounge sparkles with an undulating chandelier and swanky bar; and the $11,000-per-night Regent Suite has a private en suite spa and custom Treesse mini pool. As I boarded Grandeur for the ship’s inaugural sailing, I was mesmerized by the grand staircase and glittering chandelier. And with a maximum capacity of 744 guests, I found it easy to take time to myself in the myriad of quiet spots tucked throughout the ship, whether in the Serene Spa and Wellness area, in the Library, or on the Sports Deck overlooking the ocean. Seven restaurants include specialty steakhouse Prime 7, pan-Asian restaurant Pacific Rim, and breakfast and lunch buffet La Veranda, which refines the cruise buffet experience with daily specials like paella and sushi. Several bars and lounges, a pool and hot tubs, a casino, Broadway-style productions, and cooking classes at the Culinary Arts Kitchen make the ship a destination in itself, though guests will want to take advantage of those included excursions on Caribbean, Central American, North American, and European itineraries, ranging from seven to 16 nights, during the ship’s 2024 season. From $4,669 per person for a seven-night sailing. Accessible ship. — Elizabeth Rhodes

Silversea’s Silver Nova

Courtesy of Silversea Cruises

Carrying 728 passengers, Silver Nova is big for the luxury sector, but boasts a hugely important metric: a capacious passenger space ratio — that is, the number of guests relative to the size of the ship. Simply put, this ship offers more elbow room per passenger than almost any other cruise vessel. Silver Nova is wrapped in glass, with an asymmetrical layout; the funnel is positioned off-center, so is the pool, offering an expansive, uncluttered pool deck. Many features of the brand-new ship recall previous Silversea successes, my favorite of which is the S.A.L.T. (Sea And Land Taste) program, expanded for Silver Nova . S.A.L.T. perks include a gorgeous, sea-facing lab for hands-on culinary lessons (at no additional cost), plus a new concept, the Chef’s Table, where an 11-course menu is prepared for just 24 diners. All facets of the S.A.L.T. ecosystem, including ingredients, a bar, lectures, and shore excursions, are keyed to the region Nova is sailing. While food is a drawing card for Silver Nova , accommodations also received a revamp. Tied to the theme of bringing the outside in, there are brilliant new suites found in the aft starboard corner of the ship, with wraparound balconies revealing a 270-degree view.  This is where you can tuck me in when I win the lottery and head off on a world cruise. But until then, Silver Nova will summer in Alaska and spend northern hemisphere winters in Australia and New Zealand, places where top-deck views should prove ceaselessly rewarding. From $3,250 per person for a seven-night sailing. Accessible ship. — David Swanson

The 6 best 2023 cruise itineraries to book right now

Ashley Kosciolek

How does a cruise to Arabia sound? Or what about the longest U.S. river cruise ever to set sail? With ships traveling all over the globe, it can be difficult to choose the destination that's right for you, especially when there are so many bucket list-worthy options.

That's why I've rounded up some of 2023's most exciting itineraries. From interesting new routes to tried-and-true ones that now have new ships, this list will prime your sense of wanderlust for both far-flung destinations and places close to home as we head into the new year. Prepare to be inspired.

Note: All prices listed are per person, based on double occupancy, unless otherwise noted. Fares do not include taxes and fees.

Japan on Ponant's Le Soleal

best cruises from australia 2023

After nearly three years of shutdowns and restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Japan finally reopened to travelers in November 2022. That includes cruise passengers, and several lines — including Holland America Line and Celebrity Cruises (which is offering special "Spice Route" voyages that include Japan) — are returning.

However, the most exciting Japan itineraries I've spotted for 2023 are a couple of routes offered by Ponant 's Le Soleal. Not only is the line the first expedition ship to take passengers to Japan's southern islands, but its itineraries are also Japan-focused routes that don't include other countries like the ones offered by Holland America and Celebrity.

Details: The first route is an eight-day voyage, March 24-31, 2023, offering visits to traditional villages of the Okinawa archipelago and the Ryukyu Islands, as well as Ishigaki and Kume. Prices start at $6,000 per person for an ocean-view cabin.

The second route is an eight-day sailing from Osaka to Fukuoka, May 15-22, 2023, taking passengers to stops in the Seto Inland Sea, the oldest sea route in Japan. Fares start from $7,310 per person for an ocean-view room. More information on Ponant's Asia voyages can be found on the line's website .

West Africa on Hurtigruten's Spitsbergen

best cruises from australia 2023

In a first for Hurtigruten , the line is offering a selection of sailings around the west coast of Africa, including the islands of Cape Verde and Guinea-Bissau's Bissagos Islands, which are made up of more than 80 beachy islands and islets, only about 20 of which are populated year-round.

Cape Verde voyages are rare, making this ideal for anyone wishing to check the country off their bucket list. Plus, with Hurtigruten's rapid expansion beyond its traditional Norway offerings and into expedition cruising, you can be one of the first to try out this first-for-the-line itinerary, which will be available four times in late 2023 (and into early 2024), departing from Dakar, Senegal.

Details: These 13-day sailings on Hurtigruten's Spitsbergen depart from Dakar in November and December 2023 and January 2024. Prices start at $5,974 per person for an inside cabin. More information can be found on Hurtigruten Expeditions' website .

Ohio and Mississippi Rivers on American Queen Voyages' American Countess

best cruises from australia 2023

It's no secret that American Queen Voyages has been sailing U.S. rivers for years. But what makes this particular itinerary special is that it will be the line's longest ever. The 23-day cruises , which include travel on both the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers, will be offered on the line's newest ship, the 245-passenger American Countess .

The vessel will feature stops in some of America's most notable small towns, including La Crosse, Wisconsin; Dubuque, Bettendorf and Burlington, Iowa; Hannibal, St. Louis, Kimmswick and Cape Girardeau, Missouri; Paducah, Henderson, Owensboro, Brandenburg, Louisville and Maysville, Kentucky; Madison, Indiana; Point Pleasant, West Virginia; and Cincinnati and Marietta, Ohio.

Details: The first voyage is set to begin in Red Wing, Minnesota (near Minneapolis), on July 24, 2023, and end in Pittsburgh on Aug. 15, 2023. The reverse itinerary will begin on Aug. 15, 2023, when the ship reaches Pittsburgh. Prices start from $10,599 per person for an inside cabin. You can find more details on the line's website .

The Middle East on Windstar's Star Legend

best cruises from australia 2023

If you're looking for a cruise destination that's a bit more far-flung, Windstar Cruises is offering Red Sea and Persian Gulf sailings in the Middle East — a first for the line, which will sail its newly stretched Star Legend in the region, beginning in fall 2023.

The line will offer four different itineraries, but my favorite is the 10-day Persian Gulf option from Dubai to Muscat, Oman, which includes calls on places like Ras Al-Khaimah and Fujairah in the United Arab Emirates and Khasab, Oman. The ship will also visit the UAE's island of Sir Bani Yas, which is known for nature and wildlife conservation. The sailings include overnights in Doha and Abu Dhabi, too.

Details: This itinerary is offered 11 times, beginning in November 2023 and running into early 2024. Fares start from $3,499 per person for ocean-view accommodations.

Caribbean and Bahamas on MSC Meraviglia and Carnival Venezia from NYC

best cruises from australia 2023

Although Caribbean and Bahamas itineraries aren't a new thing from New York, two cruise lines will have a new presence there starting in 2023: Carnival Cruise Line with Carnival Venezia, which will begin sailing from Manhattan in June, and MSC Cruises with MSC Meraviglia, which will be based at Brooklyn's Red Hook terminal beginning in April.

The itineraries are fairly standard at first glance, but what's key here is that, for the first time, the lines' private islands — in this case, Carnival's Half Moon Cay and MSC's Ocean Cay Marine Reserve — will be accessible via sailings traveling round-trip from New York.

Details: Between April and December 2023, MSC Meraviglia is offering 11 seven-night sailings calling on Port Canaveral (near Orlando), and Nassau and Ocean Cay Marine Reserve, both in the Bahamas. Prices start from $399 per person for an inside cabin. More info can be found on the MSC Cruises website .

From June through December, Carnival Venezia will sail one eight-day Bahamas voyage that includes Nassau, Freeport and Half Moon Cay, with prices starting from $484 per person for an inside cabin. During that time, the vessel is also scheduled to run five eight-day Eastern Caribbean cruises calling on Amber Cove, Grand Turk and Half Moon Cay, with fares starting at $684 per person for an inside cabin. For additional details, visit the Carnival website .

Australia/New Zealand on Disney Wonder and Virgin Voyages' Resilient Lady

best cruises from australia 2023

With Australia and New Zealand finally picking up steam again post-shutdown, it's not surprising that some cruise lines are sending ships to the region for the first time in 2023. Beginning in November, Disney Cruise Line 's Disney Wonder will sail 14 two- to six-night voyages from Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne — calling on places like Hobart and Eden in Australia; Auckland, New Zealand; and Noumea, New Caledonia — through the end of the year, offering Disney fans another option in terms of destination.

Plus, starting in December 2023, Virgin Voyages ' brand-new Resilient Lady will offer five two- to 14-night sailings from Melbourne, providing locals with a more modern ship. (It's rare for the Australian market to see brand-new vessels.) Voyages include stops in Hobart, Burnie or both Tasmanian ports. On the two-week sailing, ports also include Sydney, as well as Picton, Napier, Tauranga and Auckland in New Zealand.

Details: Disney Wonder's per-person fares for inside cabins start at $946 for two nights, $1,604 for three nights, $2,000 for four nights, $2,118 for five nights and $4,078 for six nights. For more information, visit the Disney Cruise Line website .

Virgin Voyages' per-person prices for interior accommodations start from $245 for two nights, $613 for five nights, $753 for six nights and $2,240 for 14 nights. Check out the Virgin Voyages website for more details on these cruises.

Never break these 9 rules on a camping trip

Can you hear the blast of foghorns? The first Australian cruise summer season in two years is officially here.

And, after such a long wait, we’re more eager than ever to get back on board. According to Google’s travel industry manager Harry Meagher, cruise-related searches have surged by a whopping 280 per cent in the past four months, and Flight Centre reports that cruise inquiries over the past month have doubled those during the same time period in 2019.

This is a revival that will be welcomed not just by holidaymakers. According to Joel Katz from Cruise Lines International Association, each port visit will bring new visitors and new opportunities for local communities helping to rebuild an industry previously worth more than $5bn a year to the Australian economy.

With 46 ships here or on their way, there’s a cruise for all tastes, and there’s a port nearby where you can embark. The big news is a number of ships will be home porting at the new Brisbane International Cruise Terminal, including Pacific Encounter, Carnival Luminosa, Quantum of the Seas and Coral Princess.

Wherever you choose to embark this season, there is a range of itinerary options on offer – circumnavigating Australia, short voyages along the east coast, and trips to New Zealand and the South Pacific, to name a few.

The Royal Caribbean Ovation of the Seas.

For food lovers

With specialty restaurants, celebrity chefs and menus celebrating local produce, cruise ships are undergoing a culinary revolution. Regent Seven Seas takes it up a notch with the Culinary Arts Kitchen on board Seven Seas Explorer, set to arrive in Australia in late December for her first Asia-Pacific season.

Here cruisers can get hands-on experience with expert chefs in a state-of-the-art teaching kitchen.

Meanwhile, Cunard is hosting the inaugural Great Australian Culinary Voyage, a five-day sailing on Queen Elizabeth featuring renowned chefs Matt Moran, Mark Olive and Darren Purchese.

Expect special events and talks, and the opportunity to sample incredible fare. The January voyage takes in Melbourne and Tassie before returning to Sydney.

For extended families

If a long-awaited multi-generational trip is on the cards, a cruise holiday is a genius choice.

Mum and Dad can slip off for a spa treatment or long lunch while Nan and Pop spend quality time with the little ones, and the whole family can come together to enjoy movies under the stars.

Princess Cruises offers an array of activities for any age group. Coral Princess is currently sailing, and local flagship Majestic Princess returns to Sydney this month, while Grand Princess debuts this month too.

The line has partnered with Discovery and Animal Planet to offer special ocean and wildlife-based programs for kids, including experiments, trivia, and arts and crafts.

Extended families can expect an array of choices when Celebrity Cruises’ Celebrity Eclipse arrives in port later this month. Kids will love spending time at Camp at Sea, while the grown-ups might like to meet up for a post-shore excursion drink – the cruise line has a new partnership with Aussie fave Four Pillars Gin.

Spice H2O is an adults-only area on the Norwegian Spirit.

For intrepid explorers

Head off the beaten track and truly immerse yourself in little-visited destinations on an expedition cruise. Because the vessels are smaller, they are able to visit remote ports.

From October, APT’s 99-guest MS Caledonian Sky will sail on expedition cruises around Victoria, Tasmania, South Australia and Queensland. Its Cape York and the Great Barrier Reef Expedition visits remote islands of the Great Barrier Reef and Coral Sea en route to Thursday Island.

Coral Expeditions offers small-group itineraries in the Kimberley, Tasmania and South Australia, as well as a one-off circumnavigation of Australia on Coral Adventurer from October to December.

Ponant’s Le Lapérouse and Le Soléal have been operating in the Kimberley region since May and will continue to sail to destinations in Australia, New Zealand and Asia into 2023. In April, the 32-passenger, three-masted sailing yacht Le Ponant will arrive for the Kimberley season.

Ripcord by iFLY, a skydiving simulator on the Royal Caribbean.

For thrillseekers

Anyone who loves an adrenaline rush is in for a treat, with the arrival of not one but two Royal Caribbean Quantum Class ships to our shores.

Both Ovation of the Seas and Quantum of the Seas feature “first-at-sea” experiences, including the RipCord by iFLY skydiving simulator, the FlowRider surf simulator and SeaPlex, which features a full basketball court, bumper cars and roller skating. Come November, Quantum of the Seas will homeport in Brisbane, and from the end of October, Ovation of the Seas will sail from Sydney.

Aquatic daredevils should make a direct path to the Green Lightning thrill-slide on Carnival Splendor. The adventure begins with an 11.3m free-fall drop followed by a slingshot curve, twisting and sliding guests into a giant swirling bowl.

Breakfast at The Grill aboard the Silver Muse.

For entertainment lovers

Look no further than the high seas this summer season for exceptional theatre and live performances.

Expect to be wowed by a new production on board P&O Cruises. The adults-only Blanc de Blanc – Uncorked is a Parisian-inspired show currently on stage on board Pacific Encounter, and soon to be on board Pacific Adventure when she sails this month.

Meanwhile, P&O Cruises’ Pacific Explorer will salute the King of Rock and Roll on a themed Elvis cruise departing Melbourne in December. Expect to see renowned impersonators perform, and you can even master your own version of Hound Dog at karaoke.

Holland America Line has two ships arriving in Australia in November. On these, cruisers can take a seat at Lincoln Center Stage, which has an exclusive partnership with the New York Performing Arts Centre. Additionally, on Westerdam, you can dance to live soul and blues at BB King’s Blues Club.

Ponant's Le Laparouse sauna along the Kimberley coast.

For those who love to be spoiled

Keen for a voyage that involves extra pampering? Expect door-to-door service with a limousine pick-up and exceptional butler service when sailing with ultra-luxury line, Silversea .

Your dedicated white-gloved butler is at your service to organise your shore excursions, shine your shoes and draw your bath. The line will bring the all-suite Silver Muse, Silver Shadow and Silver Whisper to Australia from December to March.

Love a spa treatment? Norwegian Spirit, a Norwegian Cruise Lines vessel which has had a $US100m revitalisation, has just doubled the size of the Mandara Spa.

Relax in the Thermal Suite before heading to the adults-only Spice H20 pool retreat, which transforms into an open-air cocktail lounge and nightclub after dark. The vessel arrives at our shores in December.

Cunard's Queen Elizabeth at the Overseas Passenger terminal in Sydney.

For a solo journey

After the past couple of years, who doesn’t want a bit of “me time”?

Cruising can be the perfect way to holiday for solo travellers. Imagine days exploring ports then stepping back on board for a spa treatment before sampling culinary delights at intimate restaurants. And you can choose to dip in and out of group activities when you desire.

Oceania Cruises caters to solo cruisers with dedicated staterooms. Its Regatta ship arrives in Sydney in December and offers 14 spacious Solo Oceanview staterooms featuring the Tranquility Bed and Bulgari amenities. The ship will sail on a 35-night circumnavigation of Australia, as well as to the South Pacific.

Another line that caters well to solo cruisers is Azamara. The line features small-group destination-immersive excursions, and back on board, often hosts meet-ups for solo cruisers. The 710-guest Azamara Quest will arrive in Fremantle in mid-December and then sail on a variety of cruises until late February.

Top 5 South Pacific Islands

By Evelyn Uslar-Pietri | Published on May 5, 2022

Royal Caribbean's Instagram for Live Updates

Noumea, New Caledonia

Noumea, New Caledonia Saint Josef Cathedral

A postcard-perfect example of captivating Polynesian culture combined with European flair, Noumea has something special for every family member. At the Museum of New Caledonia, history buffs will enjoy learning about the area’s French colonial roots, while also viewing the amazing collections of Kanak and Oceanian art.

For nature enthusiasts and snorkelers, Amedee Lighthouse is a must-see marvel. Built in 1862–and still the highest metallic structure of its kind in the world–the lighthouse is surrounded by a marine reserve teeming with tropical fish and fluorescent corals. Also known for its aquamarine waters and white powder beaches, Anse Vata Bay has a distinct French Riviera vibe. Soak up the sun then stroll down the walkway to one of the many restaurants or cafes.

If you love shopping, Noumea has some of the best in the South Pacific . Head over to Rue de l’Alma and Rue de Sebastopol to find boutiques, designer shops and more. Afterwards, swing by Port Moselle Market to find delicious treats like flaky croissants and home-made cheeses, as well as fresh fruits, veggies and local wares.

Moorea, French Polynesia

Moorea, French Polynesia, Overwater Cabanas

What does love have to do with it? Everything, beginning with the fact that this captivating little island is shaped like a heart! And it doesn’t hurt that the must-have local keepsake is its famed black pearl. But hearts and pearls aside, there is much to love in Moorea .

Like Tiki Parc, the ultimate treetop adventure destination. Here, in this emerald green mountainous terrain, you’ll find walking nets and hanging bridges, rope ladders and thrilling ziplines.

If underwater adventure is calling, the Lagoonarium de Moorea, an enclosed lagoon, is home to a rainbow of radiant coral, colourful fish and curious turtles. Another great snorkelling destination is found in the aquamarine waters of the Moorea Dolphin Centre, where you can get close and personal with bottlenose dolphins, swimming with them and learning more about these highly intelligent mammals.

For amped-up entertainment check out the traditional Polynesian show at Tiki Village, and its line-up of thrilling fire dances, Tahitian songs, and Tamure dances. The optional dinner includes a punch cocktail, a feast of Polynesian specialties and a guided tour of the village.

Suva, Fiji Islands Waterfall

A true melting pot–blending British, Chinese, Fijian, Japanese and even Indian ancestries– Suva is one of the most fascinating places on earth. Dive deep into its culture at the Pacific Harbor Arts Village where your arrival is greeted by beating tribal drums, whistling coconuts and Beqa firewalkers braving fiery coals. Discover Suva’s ancient secrets at the Fiji Museum, with exhibits dating back 3,700 years including a full size war canoe.

Suva itself is a study in contrasts. You’ll find buildings from the British colonial area nestled between high-rises, bustling farmers markets and streamlined stores, historical sites as well as vibrant nightlife. For a look back at recent history, visit Bilo-Battery, an allied stronghold built to defend Suva during World War II.

No trip to the island is complete without a hike through Colo-i-Suva Forest Park. This lush rainforest is laced with walking trails, waterfalls and natural pools that you can jump into swinging from a rope. Pack a picnic to top off a perfect day.

Mystery Island, Vanuatu

Mystery Island, Vanuatu Grilled Lobster

Want to feel like a time-traveller, cast back to an era when there were no telephones, electricity or even roads? Then you’ll flip over Mystery Island , an uninhabited isle unspoiled by modern civilization. In one to two hours you can walk the entire island, breathing deeply the pristine air and taking in nature’s bounty untouched by man.

Go for a swim in crystal clear waters where coral is exceptionally healthy and abundant. You’ll see curious clownfish and parrot fish, sea turtles and other fascinating marine life. Relax on the baby-soft beach, then get your hair braided or score a traditional massage by inhabitants of nearby Aneityum, who come to the island to sell their wares and prepare food.

Visit their rustic market stalls to find hand-made sarongs, accessories and trinkets, as well as tasty bites. Vanuatuan food is simple, fresh and delicious–like just-caught lobster, grilled beachside to juicy perfection. And for a desert that will long live in your memory, try the yummy banana pie. It’s another sweet reason to book a cruise that visits Mystery Island!

Bora Bora, French Polynesia

Palm Trees over Crystal Clear Water, Bora Bora, French Polynesia

It doesn’t take long to figure out why this island is named Bora Bora , meaning ‘created by the gods’ in ancient Tahitian. Because in this heavenly place your every sense comes alive with the scent of Tiare Tahiti–a white gardenia that grows wild–stunning sights, such as the other-worldly Mount Otemanu, and lulling ocean breezes.

Plan an excursion up Mount Otemanu, towering 732 metres (2,400 feet) above the lagoon and a sacred site for locals where the bodies of ancient Tahitian kings lie. You can score bragging rights hiking your way up the extinct volcano, or reach the summit by helicopter or jeep. Whatever you choose, breathtaking views await you.

While in Bora Bora, make it a goal to tuck into the local cuisine which is as tasty as it is fresh. The poisson cru, or raw fish, is a scrumptious ceviche of ahi tuna in coconut milk, lime juice and spices. Another fan favourite is the firi firi, a binge-worthy, coconut-laced Tahitian doughnut.

With some of the most idyllic islands in the world within cruising distance from Australia, checking them off your bucket list is a breeze. Simply choose your cruise, pack lightly and off you go to legendary places where ancient kings and warriors rest, nature is at its most vibrant and adventure is boldly uncharted.
