Enormous California , with its booming economy, bounty of nature, agriculture and vibrant cities could be a country unto itself.

There’s a season for everything, as the song goes, so whether you come for the sun, surf, skiing or culture, here's a guide to the best times to visit the Golden State.

A woman sits on someone's shoulders rising her above the crowd at a gig

June to August is the best time for beaches and festivals

California is about 800 miles long – the UK could fit inside California one and half times over! – so the state's weather varies immensely from north to south.

During summer, from San Diego to Santa Barbara , the nearly continuous ribbon of beaches is thronged and the Pacific is warm. In the SoCal desert, June through August is notoriously hot, while the San Francisco Bay Area can be famously chilly because of its summer fog. Regardless, travelers roam in droves while school is out, and this is when you can expect the busiest beaches, the most expensive hotel rooms and the biggest crowds.

For the entire month of June, California celebrates LGBTIQ+ pride , especially in San Francisco, which sets the global standard.

California's campgrounds, beaches and theme parks hit peak popularity, especially on the July 4 holiday – summer’s biggest travel weekend. The California State Fair brings pie-eating contests, craft-beer competitions, championship hogs, carnival rides and much more to Sacramento later in July.

Also in late July, Comic-Con – the nation’s biggest annual convention of comic-book fans, hardcore pop-culture collectors and sci-fi and anime devotees, affectionately known as "Nerd Prom" – brings out-of-this-world costumed madness to San Diego.

San Francisco’s Summer of Love roots underpin the Outside Lands music and comedy bacchanalia that takes over Golden Gate Park in August.

April to May and September to October are the best times for outdoor activities

In the spring, as wildflower season peaks in the high desert, the southern desert bursts into song at Coachella Music Festival , and San Francisco twinkles with international celebrities as the nation's oldest film festival lights up with star-studded US premieres of hundreds of films from around the globe, usually during two weeks in April.

Early autumn is also a spectacular time. In wine country, vineyards erupt in an ocean of golden orange and magenta hues, from Sonoma and Napa to Paso Robles. On the Northern California coast, summertime fog retreats and balmy days become the norm. Fall is also when the Central Coast starts to warm up and the heat in SoCal finally breaks. Fall festivals include the storied Monterey Jazz Festival and many wine-country harvest festivals.

With students back in their seats at school, "shoulder season" is prime time for visiting California's  10 national parks or exploring the beaches. And in the Sierras , early winter storms in November can blanket the mountains in snow, giving winter sports fans an early start to the ski season. Shoulder season also offers lower hotel prices, and accommodation availability goes up statewide.

November to March is the best time to avoid the crowds

Winter in California is famously mild (especially in the south), but you can still find killer powder on the peaks and whale watching on the coast. Winter – particularly December and January – is a prime time to spot whales offshore as they migrate south to their seasonal home in Baja California . Accommodation rates will be lowest along the coast, and this is a perfect opportunity to visit California's deserts .

January is the wettest month in California, and a slow time for coastal travel – but this is when mountain ski resorts and Southern California deserts hit their stride. The famous New Year’s parade held before the Tournament of Roses college football game draws more than 700,000 spectators to the LA suburb of Pasadena .

As spring approaches, California sunshine breaks through the drizzle, skiers hit the slopes in T-shirts and wildflowers begin to bloom. And the cooler temps in the desert make it a great time to hike in Joshua Tree and Death Valley .

Winter is also the season to see thousands of monarch butterflies warming up in California groves and find colonies of elephant seals nursing pups in Central Coast dunes. Meanwhile, after wintering in South America, the swallows return to Mission San Juan Capistrano in Orange County around March 19 – and the historic mission town celebrates its Spanish and Mexican heritage all month long.

When is the best time to visit California?

  • Month-by-month

There isn’t one best time to visit California — it’s a year-round destination. Much of the state attracting a pleasant Mediterranean climate, with warm, sunny summers and cooler wet winters.

Given the size of the region there are variations, with some areas attracting more extreme weather changes than others. Along the coast, the temperature rarely dips below 68°F, though even the hottest summer days are cooled by sea breezes.

Inland, the weather follows a more typical seasonal cycle, with dry summers, a colorful fall, cold (and, on higher ground, snowy) winters, and bright, temperate spring months ideal for exploring the outdoors.

Month-by-month guide for traveling in California

Golden Gate Bridge, San Francisco

Visiting California in January - March

The Californian winter months do vary from cooler coastal temperatures in San Francisco and the Bay Area to fine sunny days in the south of the state in Los Angeles and San Diego . This is a more affordable time of year to travel and many of the regional highlights are quiet with fewer visitors, though certain attractions do close. At higher altitude the snowfall creates ideal conditions for winter sports.

Events & Festivals

  • Migrating gray whales pass through the bay of Monterey.

Yosemite Falls, Yosemite National Park

Visiting California in April - May

As temperatures increase, the snowmelt on higher ground reveals hiking trails, forest canopies and wondrous national parks with Yosemite perhaps the best known and most popular. At this time of year waterfalls are at their most impressive with fierce, fast flowing water rushing over granite boulders then dropping into lush valleys below. Elsewhere, the beaches and theme parks of Southern California benefit from the onset of warmer days.

  • The Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in Palm Springs is now established as one of the biggest music events in the US.
  • The Tour of California is an internationally recognized bike race that loops through many of the state's most spectacular locations.

Santa Monica beach

Visiting California in June - August

Summer in California is consistently hot and sunny with all major attractions and sites open for business. In major cities the temperatures can reach over 86°F so visits to the beach are recommended. Additionally, Lake Tahoe, in the north of the state, has perfect conditions for kayaking, rafting and a cooling swim in the stunning clear water at this time of year. Although the weather is good, this period is also the busiest as it coincides with school vacations bringing crowds and peak season prices.

  • The Castroville Artichoke Festival of food and wine on the central coast is a hugely popular local event with tastings, demos and a colorful parade.
  • This Comic-con event has evolved into one of the largest pop culture festivals in the world, and takes place in San Diego.

Napa Valley vineyards

Visiting California in September - October

The fall period attracts a lovely mild climate and in some parts of the state, spectacular foliage. This is a great time to visit California's wine regions during the grape harvest time, known as 'the crush'. The San Francisco and North Coast regions, often shrouded in fog during the summer, typically see some of their sunniest days during the 'Indian summer'.

  • The annual grape harvest is in full swing in vineyards across California.
  • A two-week foodie festival promoting fresh local produce in Sacramento.

Zabriskie Point, Death Valley National Park

Visiting California in November - December

The start of the winter period can be changeable with an increase in inclement days in certain parts of the state and lingering sunny days in others. Travel inland to the desert around Palm Springs for example and this is arguably one of the best times to visit. There are beautiful clear warm days while a visit to the central Californian coast would mean misty and cooler conditions.

  • Across the state, towns and cities prepare for the holiday seasons with numerous festive light shows and decorative displays.

The Best Time to Visit California: Season by Season Guide

Figuring out the best time to visit California does not yield one simple answer. We have 162,000 square miles of varied landscape and a four-season climate that lends itself to winter sports, hiking, boating, swimming, sightseeing and beach combing. Our rugged coastline is the best in the US and it’s beautiful throughout the seasons. In addition, we have rugged mountains, two desert zones and some of the tallest, widest and oldest redwood and pine trees in the world.

So, determining the best time to travel to California depends heavily upon your interests. But don’t feel overwhelmed. This season-by-season guide for when to visit CA will help you identify the ideal time to visit for some of our most popular activities and locations.

When is the Best Time to Visit California FAQ

Here are some commonly asked questions about the ideal times to visit California.

When To Visit California to Avoid Crowds?

Summertime is the most popular time to visit CA’s key vacation spots, for both domestic and international visitors. So, visiting the beaches, Disneyland, Lake Tahoe, Yosemite and other fun spot will be very busy in June, July and August.

If that’s the only time you can come, by all means come and visit us. But do plan ahead for your hotel bookings and try to do the most popular sites and attractions on weekdays.

My favorite time to explore California is in April/May and September/October. It’s less crowded and the weather is great all over the state.

When is the Rainy Season in California?

Generally, our rainy season goes from December to March. BUT, we have a lot of strange weather swings and it could be drier or much wetter, which literally depends upon the prevailing winds.

And even then, Northern California and the western side of the Sierra Nevada mountain range get far more precipitation than does Southern California and the southeastern deserts.

When is the Best Time to Visit California Beaches?

For northern California (which we define as the San Francisco Bay Area and North), anything outside of the rainy season is great. The weather tends to be cool, even in the summer, so don’t expect hot summer sun. But rather you’ll get craggy coastline, tide pooling and marine mammals.

Central and Southern California beaches are nice all year, but they are really fun in the warmer summer months.

For less fog at any of the beaches, visit in April/May or September/October.

When is the Worst Time to Visit California?

There is no worst time to visit California! As we noted in the intro, we have four season weather with a variety landscapes. Even if you visit in the December-March rainy season, you can avoid the wet by visiting areas like Palm Springs, Death Valley or San Diego.

It’s more a matter of keying in on the region and types of activities you’d like to do and then choosing a timeframe that suits. So keep reading because what follows is a season-by-season guide for visiting CA.

Dana Point California beach, with flowers in the foreground.

The Best Seasons for Visiting California

Each season has its own pros and cons. The various regions of California really shine in particular seasons. So the following breaks down what’s great about that particular season and offers itinerary ideas for each.

Snow in South Lake Tahoe. snow and pine trees

December, January February in California

The winter is our rain and snow season and while it may be wet on the coast, this season is perfect for winter sports. The Lake Tahoe Basin is huge, offering a ton elbow room for people who want to play in Tahoe snow or go skiing . There is also winter skiing in Mammoth Lakes in the Eastern Sierra, and in Bear Lake, which isn’t far from Los Angeles.

Yosemite National Park is jammed with people in the summer, and the high country is snowed in during the winter. But, you can visit Yosemite valley in the winter, which is at a lower elevation. And it’s much less crowded than in the summer. There’s plenty of sightseeing and hiking in Yosemite in the winter , including the amazing February firefall event .

If snow isn’t your thing, we suggest exploring California’s deserts in the winter. Death Valley and Joshua Tree National Parks are volcanically hot in the summer, but they are super pleasant between late November and March. We have guide for visiting Death Valley and Joshua Tree , and also advice on how to road trip both in one trip .

best time travel california

March, April, May

We love California in the spring! Traveling during this time avoids the crowds and the weather is great.

March/April are usually when the flowers start popping. You can find them at Table Mountain (near Oroville), blooming almond trees (in the Central Valley), the Carizzo Plains National Monument (in Central California), poppies in Antelope Valley State Reserve (between Bakersfield and LA) and ranunculus (in Carlsbad near San Diego).

April/May features San Francisco’s best weather with low chance of rain and little fog. It’s the perfect time for strolling the Golden Gate Bridge , taking an SF hike or exploring SF’s quirky side .

The spring is also a nice time to visit Palm Springs where the weather will be warm but not too hot. You can use it as a base of operations for hiking in Joshua Tree , taking the Palm to Pines scenic byway and visiting offbeat Slab City .

Late spring is a nice time for waterfall viewing, especially in far northern California. Base yourself in Redding and visit Burney Falls and the nearby state parks.

Spring is not the best time to visit Lake Tahoe or elsewhere in the Sierra Nevada mountain range. It’s slush season as the snow melts and many of the high country hikes aren’t available until late May or early June. Tioga Pass, which goes through Yosemite to the Eastern Sierra isn’t plowed in the winter so it only opens up sometime between May and late June.

Pismo beach pier with surfers.

June, July, August

It’s time to hit the beach! This is the classic time to lounge around on some of California’s finest beaches. We recommend visiting Pismo Beach , which has one of the longest, widest beaches in the whole state. Or hang out in quirky Cayucos , using it as a base of operations for exploring the Central Coast.

We’ve also got some nice inland beaches, particularly in Lake Tahoe. You could spend a week there hiking, lounging at the lake, and visiting craft breweries .

You could also put together a classic LA itinerary featuring beaches, Disneyland and Santa Monica. Or visit San Diego with its beaches and world class zoo.

California’s love affair with the car and our epic landscapes also make it the perfect place for a summer road trip. We have an article featuring CA’s best scenic drives , which cover the whole state. Some of our favorites include the classic Pacific Coast Highway drive from SF to LA, going from SF to the north coast redwoods , and driving around Lake Tahoe .

If you can’t take the heat, the summer may be a good time to head up to Northern California. We have a lot of great coastal towns with small charming downtowns and epic ocean views. It’s also a good time to go forest bathing and visit some of CA’s many redwood groves .

Gull Lake on the June Lake Loop fall leaves

September, October, November

September and October are another good time for visiting Northern California cities and towns, because the fog will have blown out but the weather temps will still be good. There are a lot of fun things to do in Half Moon Bay . Mendocino has cute coastal vibes and great state parks (like Van Damme and Hendy Woods ). And Point Reyes National Seashore is a nature lover’s dream with Tule elk, migratory elephant seals and gorgeous shoreline. We also recommend visiting the north coast redwoods in Sept/Oct.

October is a fantastic time to visit the Eastern Sierra. A Highway 395 road trip will be popping with fall color and you can visit various hot springs and fall hiking locations. You can us our guides for things to do in Bishop and Lone Pine to put together an action-packed itinerary.

October and November are another great time for Death Valley and Joshua Tree. And you can even do a full SF to Death Valley road trip which includes Highway 395.

We also think fall is a great time to visit Big Sur . Heavy winter rains often create road closures and summer crowds make it difficult to find lodging and camping in Big Sur . But in the fall, the road is reliably open and you may even catch migratory gray whales.

A lot of the wine country towns like Paso Robles , Temecula, Napa and Sonoma also have fall harvest festivals to celebrate the grape crop coming in.

One not so great thing about this season is that our wildfire watch usually starts in August and can go into October. Fires in the wine country north of San Francisco, the Santa Anas near Los Angeles and throughout the Sierra range can and do happen. So, if you want to visit those areas in the fall, remain flexible.

The state can be broadly divided into three regions: Northern California, Central California, and Southern California.

  • Northern California, which includes cities such as San Francisco and Napa Valley, has a cooler and wetter climate. This region experiences more rainfall and lower temperatures than the other regions, particularly in the winter months.
  • Central California, which includes destinations such as Monterey, Yosemite, and San Luis Obispo, has a hot and dry climate. This region is known for its scorching summer temperatures, while winter temperatures can be quite mild.
  • Southern California, which includes popular cities like Los Angeles, San Diego, and Palm Springs , has a warm and mild climate. This region is famous for its year-round sunny weather and pleasant temperatures.

Best Time to Visit California: For Hiking, Beaches & More

With vibrant cities, beautiful national parks, and exciting attractions, it’s no surprise that California is the USA’s most visited state year after year. What’s more, the 163,696 square mile state spans 900 miles of the pacific coast and encompasses several ecosystems and climate zones. As a result, the weather varies significantly from the north to the south.

One of the most common questions among visitors is, “when is the best time to visit California?” If you’re planning a trip to Cali and wondering what time of year to go, read on. In this guide, we’ll cover the best time to travel to California for weather, low costs, minimal crowds, and much more. We’ll also break down the state’s seasonal climate, so you know what the best month to visit California is.

Table of Contents

Best Time of Year to Visit California

Not everyone comes to California for the same reason. Some people come for lively city breaks, others come to explore the stunning national parks, and others may be seeking a relaxing beach vacation. So when deciding what the best time to visit California is, you’ll first need to get clear on what you’re looking for from your Cali getaway.

But first:  Know that I’ve got a ton of California destination guides for when you start planning!

best time travel california

For Weather

The best time to travel to California is in the spring (April to May) and in the fall (September to October). This is when the temperature is most pleasant, not too hot nor too cold. There will be a higher chance of rain in the shoulder seasons than in the summer, but it typically won’t affect your vacation too much.

The coastal cities are often cooler and breezier in the summer, whereas inland towns like Palm Springs and Napa Valley can get unbearably hot. In contrast, some northern cities like San Francisco and Monterey don’t experience temperatures much higher than 20°C in July and August. So, summer can still be the best time to visit Northern California for those seeking warmth and sunshine.

For Budget Conscious Travellers

If you’re looking for a low-cost Cali trip, be sure to avoid the summer, which is the high season and the most expensive time to visit. The cheapest time to visit California is from late September to early December.

During this time, the crowds disappear, the weather cools down, and as a result, flights and hotel prices are often lower. You’ll probably find the best deals in November and early December, but rain can be prevalent in some California cities, such as San Francisco. Or, if you’re after a budget-friendly nature break, early September is the best time to go to Joshua Tree and Lake Tahoe as the tourists depart, bringing accommodation prices down.

best time travel california

The best time to go hiking in California will depend on where you are heading. For example, fall is ideal for coastal hikes in California, such as in Big Sur . It will be warm and sunny but not too hot, and the sun doesn’t set until around 6pm.

For many parts of the state, summer is the worst time to go hiking as it is far too hot, especially in the desert! This includes Death Valley, Big Basin, and Joshua Tree. However, Yosemite, Kings Canyon, and Sequoia National Parks are fantastic in the summer as the climate is much milder.

best time travel california

For Beaches & Surfing

California’s beaches are the busiest in summer when tourists and locals flock here to escape the heat. However, summer is definitely not the most enjoyable time to visit California’s beaches if you’re not a fan of crowds. Instead, fall months like September and October are the most pleasant as it’s still warm, but there are far fewer people.

Winter is the prime surfing season in many parts of central California, such as Santa Barbara and Ventura. During December to February, these coastal spots see big, constant swells along with good weather and wind conditions. Alternatively, late summer and early fall can be the best time to visit southern California for surfing, especially in San Diego and Orange County.

best time travel california

To Avoid Crowds

The quietest time to visit California is in the winter and spring. During this time, you’ll enjoy empty beaches and short waiting times at attractions. However, just be sure to avoid Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Spring Break when many parts of the state temporarily get busy.

The same goes for many of California’s national parks . For example, the best time to go to Yosemite National Park if you want to avoid the crowds is in winter and spring. The park will be pretty empty in winter (with some trails closed or unmaintained), but it can also be snowy or rainy. So, spring is generally the sweet spot when it’s less busy, but the hiking trails are open and enjoyable.

Best Season to Visit California

Summer is the hottest time of the year for the entire state and the shoulder seasons of spring and fall are generally the most pleasant weatherwise. Winter in Southern California is very mild, but it can feel freezing from November to February in the mountains.

Summer (June-August)

Summer is the hottest season and the time of the year when you’ll want to avoid the deserts. However, the best places to visit in California during summer are the mountainous areas like Yosemite National Park, which remain mild. What’s more, Lake Tahoe can make a refreshing vacation as the summer months bring the best conditions for kayaking, rafting, and swimming.

Many of California’s big cities reach highs of 86°F (30°C) in the summer, which along with the crowds, can feel unpleasant. One exception is San Francisco, which sits in its cool spot and experiences brisk sea winds and fog throughout this season.

best time travel california

Fall (September-October)

Fall is the best time to visit northern California because the weather is milder, and there’s plenty of foliage to admire. What’s more, the top nature spots like Yosemite and Lake Tahoe are magical as hiking conditions are still pleasant. You’ll also find tons of harvest events at the wineries this time of year, making fall the best time to visit Napa Valley.

The major cities like Los Angeles are much more enjoyable in the fall, too. From September onwards, the humidity dies down, and the temperatures are much more pleasant, from 68 to 77°F (20 to 25°C).

best time travel california

Winter (November-February)

The climate differs between regions in the winter, with some cities like San Francisco being rainy and misty. However, one of the best California winter destinations  is Palm Springs, as this desert landscape finally drops below 30°C. Moreover, Los Angeles and San Diego can see many sunny days during the winter with pleasant average temperatures of 20°C. However, some attractions close during the winter months, so check before you travel.

Of course, November to February is the best time to visit California for winter sports like skiing and snowshoeing. So, if you’re dreaming of a snowy getaway, destinations such as the Sierra Nevada Mountains and Mammoth Lakes are splendid this time of year.

best time travel california

Spring (March-May)

Like fall, spring is an excellent time to visit various parts of California. March to May is the best time to go to San Francisco as you can enjoy the city before the fog sets in. However, rainfall can still be high in March, so May is better. What’s more, the snow in the mountains starts to melt, and the waterfalls at Yosemite are full, making it another splendid place to visit in late spring.

Southern California is also beautiful in spring. It’s warm enough to relax on the beaches, and all the attractions are open again.

When is the Best Time to Go to California?

While the best time to visit California will depend on the type of vacation you are looking for, spring and fall are generally the most pleasant. Not only do the shoulder seasons see the best temperatures, but it’s not too crowded during these times either. What’s more, providing you avoid the school holidays, you’ll enjoy cheaper flights as well as lower rates in the hotels.

Best Time to Travel to California

California has more to offer than just stunning scenery and delicious wine. You can visit for much of the year, and take advantage of outdoor destinations or city attractions. If you prefer the luxury of a city based vacation with sight-seeing and shopping, head to Los Angeles. It has points of Interest list so long that it would take a lifetime to see them all! And don’t forget about San Francisco across the Bay. It’s a must see if you’re on the California Coast!

If you’re visiting in the summer months, consider Yosemite National Park which sits high up in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, or the Redwood National Park which is in far northern California – both places make for fantastic exploring if you have enough time on your hands. The Golden State stands high atop our list as one-of-a kind place that’s worth exploring. The summer months June to August are some of the hottest summer days in the central part of the state. Places like Los Angeles have dry summers May through August, and the coast is overall more temperate. Driving down Highway 1 even for a few hours is a bucket list experience!

California has some of the most beautiful places in America, but it’s hard to list them all. I’ve narrowed down my list to my top 7 picks that I haven’t mentioned on the blog before.

Best Time to Visit California - Kings Canyon photo

Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Park

It’s easy to get lost in the immense beauty of Sequoia National Park , located in central California The park is home to some of the largest trees on earth called the sequoias, like General Sherman Tree- measuring 112 meters tall with a circumference over 33 feet at chest height! With snow-capped peaks surrounding you and miles upon miles worth natural canopies that line these giant sequoias it will be hard not take your fill before leaving this heavenly place forever. While the magic of seeing sequoias is reason enough to visit, there are other natural wonders in this park.

One such wonder is one of the highest mountain peaks on land across all continents – 1248 meters tall it towers above everything else! Another amazing sight for visitors will be from Mirror Lake up towards General Sherman Tree where you can see more than 100m down into its depths below along with many different parks animals . Another popular spot among tourists and locals alike has become lookout point near Hungry Valley which offers stunning views over Yosemite Valley as well as Kings Canyon National Park beyond that lies Nevada’s renowned Hoover Dam—a must-see if only. If you love visiting National Parks then this is a must see along with Yosemite.

The nice thing about the Sequoia area is that it is in close proximity to Sacramento, and you can also reach it by car coming from the east. The Best time to travel to California to explore the Sequoias is during the late spring or early summer months. Winter brings the rainy season to much of California, and the roads may be closed in higher elevations due to snow. Do not attempt a winter vacation in the west coast forests unless you’re highly skilled at hiking, traveling across snow, and know exactly where you are going. Some parks may have specific rules and recommendations for exploring during the winter.

McWay Falls

If you’re looking for one of the most iconic sights in Big Sur , then look no further than Mcway Falls. This 80-foot cascade dropping down into a stretch of untouched beach is enchanting and can be found tucked away inside Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park (though it does require some hiking). The waterfall’s beauty rivals that seen at nearby sensational viewpoints like Split Rock Valley Overlook or Point Montara Lighthouse. This is a great place for hiking near beautiful waterfalls. Big Sur is a stretch along the California coast, south of San Jose and far north of Los Angeles.

If you have the opportunity, one of the best things California has to offer is the Cambria area on the coast. It boasts breathtaking sunsets all year, and is one of the most desirable destinations for couples! The sunny weather and mild winters also make it an option for the off season. With all of the beautiful beaches around Cambria, be aware that prices for hotels can be extremely high. Consider going on the off season, such as in the cooler months. If you are able to stay further north or south, take a day trip along the coast to visit this perfect place ! And take your camera!!

Best Time to Visit California Lake Tahoe in the summer photo

Lake Tahoe is a winter wonderland in the winter months , with 14 different ski resorts to choose from where you can enjoy winter sports. If skiing or snowboarding isn’t your jam, there’s always other fun activities like skating and hiking in search of hidden gemstone lakes (the Emerald Lake hike will make you swoon!).

There are lots of resorts around Lake Tahoe, so those that do not ski or want to be outdoors can enjoy a lodge feel and cozy up with a cup of coffee or cocoa and a good book. Enjoy the scenery or casinos/restaurants if you prefer.

Summer months in Lake Tahoe can be a blast as well! Say hello to sunny days and beautiful scenery. The sun shines for hours in Lake Tahoe, bathing the hillsides and mountainside in golden light. The crystal-clear waters ranging from sapphire blues to emerald hues and soft sand will make you feel like your on an island. Be aware that no matter what the time of the year, Lake Tahoe is COLD. The water is warmest in the summer of course, during the hottest daytime temperatures.

Best Time to Visit California - Joshua tree national park

Joshua Tree National Park

Joshua Tree National Park in southern California is a mecca for adventurers with hiking, biking and rock climbing being just some of the many activities on offer. The park also offers stargazing which will allow you to spot your very own galaxy in its entirety! Make sure that once night falls you stay at least one extra day so as not miss out any stars or satellites passing overhead while trying capture those perfect shots under starlight.

If you are heading to the great outdoors, consider renting an AirBnb out where you can enjoy the wilderness at night. Clear skies and less city lighting will enable you to see so much more. Desert areas such as this are popular during events in the galaxy such as eclipses. Plan ahead to find a great destination with amenities you need!

There are two deserts here – Mojave Desert (to the south) meets Colorado River Valley transitional zone between Sonoran desert life zones towards Los Angeles basin’s high altitude Mediterranean atmosphere interacting species typical wetter climates found along Pacific Coast rims such us cacti Heats/Cool

Napa Valley

Napa Valley is a wine lovers paradise, and it’s home to Napa vineyards that have been honored with being named “King of California Wine Country.” When you visit this picturesque area for vacation purposes make sure not only taste the delicious wines here but also take in all those quaint boutique resorts. This area is popular with summer crowds and motorcycle/biking groups. You can find major events on the web if you prefer, or just head out in the late summer for a super relaxing getaway. There are many shops located in small towns all throughout Napa Valley, so look for those along the highway.

Some travelers tips for Best Time to Travel to California in the Napa Valley area is that it’s very seasonal– smaller shops may close down entirely for the winter months, and many have shorter hours. Consider booking your vacation before Labor Day so you can take advantage of eateries and shops.

It’s popular for relaxing spas, offering sauna sessions alongside their impressive drink lists! You’ll want an experience like no other after experiencing accommodations at one these top notch places – so book now ahead before they’re gone. Check out the Napa Valley Wine Festival.

Finally, wine is definitely the star! Beringer is a great choice for newcomers; Inglenook will make any wine lover drool with its impressive list of wines that are available by-the glass or bottle.  Inglenook offers an inventive tasting plate that enhances their wine pairings – and their Estate Chef Alex Lovick oversees special events and private tastings that often incorporate ingredients from Inglenook’s organically farmed culinary garden. Each have something unique about them but all provide guests plenty to explore when visiting, so try more than just grapes at these wonderful establishments!!! Even if you don’t care for Napa Valley wines, they make good gifts for friends and coworkers to have on hand.

Again, you can travel down Highways 1 and 101 in this area to get even more out of your visit.

Channel Islands National Park

“The Channel Islands National Park is a must-see for any traveler looking to experience breathtaking natural beauty in its most unadulterated state. The wildlife you’ll find on these islands couldn’t be more different than what can usually be found elsewhere, leaving visitors with an amazing feeling of isolation and solitude.”

The Channel Islands are a hidden gem in the Pacific Ocean that has been largely untouched by human activity. The islands boast beautiful landscapes and wildlife, all with stunning views to boot! To get to Channel Islands, you’ll have take a boat or plane ride from either Anacapa Island in Santa Cruz or SCARBOROUGH ISLAND as well. The three other islands—San Nicolas near Los Angeles; Santa Rosa at San Francisco Bay (the location where they filmed Pirates of the Caribbean); and Hart Island off coast central California-are all reachable if not too difficult with some planning on your part! There are no accommodations on this island so this would be a day trip or you could bring some camping supplies if you want to stay overnight.

The Big Cities

Finally, no list about places to see and the best time of year to visit California would be complete without including some of the larger cities . You are likely to fly in to one of these cities if you’re traveling by plane. Don’t miss out on seeing some of the sights if you have a layover!

The Bay area around Los Angeles is surrounded by suburbs and also mountains. If you fly in, the first thing you may notice is the extreme busy highways and airport. If you’re not accustomed to travel or dislike driving in heavier traffic, we would absolutely recommend rideshares or a shuttle. This is often the case in major cities and around major attractions. Both for your own safety and other drivers, be cautious of quick turn-offs, exits, and quickly moving traffic overall. While you’re there, take a trip over to the Hollywood area to see the attractions.

Sacramento is a bit less hectic. If you’re used to traveling around a large city, driving won’t be an issue. There are gorgeous neighborhoods you can bicycle around in, during the warm weather. Many areas have designated bike lanes. The weather is great during the summer and you can enjoy the pool well into the evening. Sacramento makes a great “base” to stay if you’re taking day trips along the coast to visit beaches or sightsee. Keep in mind, traffic and just the windy roads around the coast in general can extend driving time significantly.

The San Francisco area is by far my favorite larger city to travel to in California. The clouds over the bay have a unique and haunting look, and the hills and architecture add to the vibe. If you’re staying around San Francisco, be sure to grab some sushi or teriyaki. Then, head over to the pier for shopping and sight-seeing. The city has a northern-California atmosphere, with many coffee shops and small businesses. Golden Gate park is a popular place to see families, those walking dogs or even taking pictures and getting engaged. You can walk across the Golden Gate Bridge from the park.

  • Best Time To Visit California

- This post may contain affiliate links. Read our disclosure.

It’s easy to think of California as a summer destination, and if you had to describe California in three words, chances are, they might be ‘sun’, ‘sea’ and ‘sand’. However, California does have distinct seasons, and it’s such a diverse state that there are amazing places to visit year-round. All the seasons are so different, and the best time to visit California depends on what you want to see and do.

For example, visiting LA is perfect in the summer months of June through August, while Yosemite National Park is another popular summer vacation spot, but one that is better to explore in spring or fall to avoid the crowds. If you’re searching for cooler temperatures and even snow, the best time to visit California is during winter, when temperatures can be as low as 48°F (8.8°C). Summer is a quintessential time to visit California as the warm weather makes it ideal for soaking up the sun, relaxing by the beach and catching some waves.

Although you may be tempted to visit some of the famous California attractions during summer, many places are more comfortable to explore at other times of the year.

Yosemite and Joshua Tree National Park are overcrowded and steamy in summer, and Death Valley becomes uncomfortably hot during the summer months.

It is best left out of your summer vacation itinerary if you’re a cool weather person.

Some of California’s well-known destinations should be left for other times but fortunately, there are many places in California to visit in summer.

With an average of 13 hours and 50 minutes of daylight in summer, there is plenty of time to see as many California sights as you wish.

With sweeping landscapes and majestic natural beauty, a wide range of world-famous sites and entertainment, and vibrant culture, it’s no wonder why California is such a renowned vacation destination for travelers the world over.

California is a phenomenal place to visit year-round, but depending on exactly what you’re looking for, you can time your stay to better take advantage of optimal weather conditions, crowd sizes, and pricing, to make your vacation truly unforgettable.  Here are several considerations when planning the best time for your California holiday:

Weather

California is a sprawling state with a generally stable, Mediterranean climate, yet the time of year and region you’re visiting are important factors in determining the ideal weather.

Summers are dry and warm, with plenty of sunshine and clear blue skies. Temperatures average in the 70s and 80s. All this is perfect for relaxing days lounging on the beach!

Spring

This season enjoys comfortable temperatures hovering between 65 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit, and plenty of colorful, blooming flowers on display—setting the stage for any number of activities, from long hikes and lazy picnics to day trips and wine tours.

Winter

Typically wet and mild in most of the state, traveling north to the mountainous and higher altitudes brings colder temperatures and regular snowfall. These conditions make California perfect for skiing , snowboarding, and other fun, cooler-weather activities.

Autumn

Autumn in California hosts clear and mild weather, with temperatures between 76 and 81 degrees. This is also the best time of year for wine and vineyard tours as this is the prime period for grape harvesting!

The beautiful weather is one of the Golden State’s major draws, and based on exactly where you’re visiting, you could experience a range of other weather conditions, too—from thick fog blanketing the northern coasts to the dry desert climate of the southeast.

Tourism & Prices

When you choose to travel can significantly impact crowd sizes and prices for activities, accommodations, and travel.

The most popular times to visit are during the peak summer months from June to August, and major holidays—but expect larger crowds and higher rates on hotel rooms, theme park tickets, and more.

If you’re looking to avoid crowds and save some money, schedule your California dream vacation during the low season in winter, stretching from November through March.

For the perfect balance of great weather and lower crowd sizes and costs, the shoulder seasons from April to May, and September to October offer the best of both worlds .

When Is the Best Time to Go to California? Guide to California’s Climate and Temperatures

This site may contain affiliate links. We may receive a commission for purchases made through these links.

What is the best time to visit   California ? It is impossible to give a short answer because the climate in California is subject to change depending on the area. Let’s start with some statistics. 14,504 ft / -282 ft: these two values represent the maximum and minimum altitude above sea level in the state. The first refers to the height of Mount Whitney , located in the Sierra Nevada, which is the “backbone” of California. The second value refers to the altitude of the salt desert in Badwater Basin , a depressed area in Death Valley, just 75 miles east of Mt. Whitney (as the crow flies).

These numbers serve to show how much the Californian landscape can vary even at short distances and how, consequently, temperatures are not consistent throughout California . Just think of the difference, for example, between the Mediterranean climate of Los Angeles and the temperate, mild and windy climate of San Francisco Bay! In this article, we want to give you some specific advice on when to go to the Golden State, provide information regarding the climate of California , and particularly focus on the areas most frequented by travelers:

  • The coast from San Francisco to San Diego through  Los Angeles
  • National parks and lakes located in the mountain range of the Sierra Nevada (Yosemite , Sequoia , Lake Tahoe )
  • The desert area of Death Valley and Joshua Tree National Park
  • The parks of Northern California : Redwood National Park and Lassen Volcanic National Park

San Francisco Climate

Los angeles climate, san diego climate, california desert climate, the parks and lakes of the sierra nevada, northern california climate, when is the best time to go to california, california coast climate.

If you were to draw a straight line between San Francisco and San Diego , the distance would be 460 miles. These are two of the three most visited cities on the coast during trips to California . The third, but not least, is Los Angeles , which is ideally located between San Francisco and San Diego, although geographically speaking it is much closer to San Diego. Here is a short description of the different climates:

best season to visit california

Out of the three cities, San Francisco is the farthest north and it also has the most “capricious” climate. As I wrote in my in-depth post about San Francisco’s climate – which I invite you to read – temperatures can also vary considerably in the course of a day. You will no doubt have seen some photos of the Golden Gate Bridge shrouded in fog in the bay, especially during the summer months. This is the most significant characteristic of San Francisco’s climate, and the city is known to also be windy because of the cold ocean currents. In conclusion, San Francisco’s cool temperate climate gives rise to moderately warm windy summers, cold to mild winters, and variable springs.

california climate

Los Angeles is a completely different story. The City of Angels, famous for its beaches , from Malibu to Long Beach , has an atypical Mediterranean climate , with hot to very hot summers, mild and not very rainy winters and short sunny and warm springs. Because of the desert winds (Santa Ana winds) that blow during all of the seasons, intense hot days can occur even during the winter months, but this is not the only way in which the climate changes in Los Angeles. Since Los Angeles is a very large and geographically diverse city, temperatures can change significantly from one district to another. In addition, in some locations in the immediate surroundings of the city, the climate changes drastically ( Palm Springs ) and you need to be prepared for major temperature differences. For all these reasons, we decided to expand on the subject by writing a detailed article about the climate of Los Angeles .

california temperatures

San Diego is the ideal city to spend some time on the beach sunbathing, even more so than Los Angeles. Compared to San Francisco, San Diego’s climate is even more favorable for beach life, even if the ocean waters are always a bit cooler than what you may be used to. San Diego’s climate is mild almost all year round, but it is warmer during the summer months, the period when there is also the highest amount of rainfall, which is very scarce during the winter. Even in December you can find temperatures around 68°, while the annual highest average temperature rarely rises above 91°, so as you can see, you can plan a visit to San Diego almost anytime of year.

best time of year to visit california

As I mentioned, those who leave Los Angeles heading east towards Palm Springs – after passing the mountains that shield Los Angeles – must be ready for a radical change in temperature. We have entered the desert area of California ! Here you will find Joshua Tree National Park , a national park that stretches between the Mojave and Colorado deserts. In the summer, temperatures are very high and you need to prepare well for the visit. To the north, right on the border with Nevada and to the east of the Sierra Nevada, lies Death Valley, one of the hottest places on the planet. In Death Valley , in the summer, temperatures are dangerously high. The recommended months to visit Death Valley are November, February, and March . I talked about this and much more in my article about the climate and temperatures in Death Valley .

Itineraries of the West Coast or, more specifically, of California, usually include either Yosemite National Park or Sequoia National Park , two beautiful parks in the Sierra Nevada.

best season to visit california

In the summer, the weather is warm and sunny in Yosemite , making it ideal for a visit, but it is still necessary to make some clarifications about Yosemite’s climate during the other seasons. It is a valley surrounded by beautiful mountains and granite peaks, so the temperature can vary according to the altitude. In the highest and medium-high peaks, the climate is mountainous, while in the valley the climate is milder. However, this does not mean that in the winter there is heavy snowfall in all areas of the park. The greatest inconvenience you will face when visiting Yosemite in the winter is the closure of Tioga Road until later spring, which prevents you from crossing the mountain range to the east to be able to go to Death Valley or Las Vegas. Here is an article on how to organize a visit to Yosemite in the winter .

best time to travel to california

You will run into a similar situation in Sequoia National Park , which also has variable altitudes. One must prepare adequately for the mountain climate and bring the right clothing, both in the winter and in the summer (in the case of high altitude hikes), although in the summer, temperatures are pleasant and the heat never unbearable. During the winter, snowstorms can cause CA-198, the road from Sequoia to the adjacent Kings Canyon, to close. I should also mention the beautiful Lake Tahoe . Because it is located in the northern region of Sierra Nevada, Lake Tahoe is a destination that is not typically included in classic tours. The lake is located at an altitude of almost 6,235 ft and is akin to an alpine lake. During the summer you can enjoy warm sunny days, while in the winter you can go skiing on the peaks around the lake.

You may be interested to know more about the area of California north of San Francisco, especially with regard to two national parks that are somewhat decentralized but very fascinating. The first, Redwood National Park  is characterized by impressive trees whose surroundings were also used to shoot some scenes of Star Wars in California , and the other park is Lassen Volcanic National Park , a park of volcanoes, coniferous forests, hot springs, and crystal clear lakes .

best time to visit california beaches

  • Redwood National Park has variable temperatures, so it is advisable to dress in layers in order to be prepared for any change in the weather. In the sections of the park closer to the coast , the climate is humid and foggy in the summer and particularly cold in winter. As you move inland, the climate becomes milder and the days are warm and sunny. The climate is temperate oceanic , as is the entire coast north of San Francisco.
  • Lassen Volcanic National Park is located north of the Sacramento Valley and at the southern end of Cascade Peaks, which includes the park’s most important active volcanic peak , Lassen Peak . Here, too, temperatures vary depending on altitude. Below 7500 ft, there are hot and humid summers and foggy winters with cool and cold days. Above 7500 ft, the climate is mountainous and winter temperatures are cold and summer temperatures are cool. From December to March, there is heavy snowfall and as a result, Lassen National Park Highway is closed during the winter.

what is the best time to visit california

By the end of this article, you’ll have understood that it’s difficult to give an unequivocal answer to this question, but in general, the best period to visit California is in the summertime . In some cases you’ll have to be mindful when you visit places with higher temperatures (especially in the deserts), but they are inconveniences that it’s easier to avoid than the winter ones (in the national parks of Sierra Nevada and beyond). If you really can’t go to California in the summer, but if you have no choice but to go during the winter, here’s an example of a winter tour of California .

Another good time to visit California can be late spring , when the climate is generally milder and temperatures allow you to visit both desert and mid-altitude areas. However, one factor that may complicate the plans is that the date in which Tioga Road reopens changes from year to year and forces those going east to circumvent the mountains from the south via a long and somewhat boring road. If Tioga Road is closed, it is often advisable to exclude Yosemite National Park from the itinerary and visit Sequoia National Park instead. In conclusion, by taking the necessary precautions, California is a state that can be visited in all seasons.

Warning: Operating hours can change and closures for extraordinary events can occur, so we strongly suggest to check the venues official websites.

Best Time to Visit

The Best Time to Visit California's Wine Country

best time travel california

Courtesy of Jordan Winery

Thanks to generally good weather year-round, California's Napa and Sonoma Valleys welcome visitors throughout the year. But if you want a genuinely idyllic wine country experience, the best time to visit is in the late summer and early fall—roughly late August through mid-September—when vines are still weighed down by massive clusters of grapes and wineries are aflutter with harvest activity. The days are still plenty long, with warm, sunny days and cool nights.

Harvest Time in Napa and Sonoma

Peak tourist season in Napa and Sonoma also coincides with harvest season. While harvest season variers year-by-year due to weather and other factors, most wineries start picking grapes in August and continue through October. While visiting at this time of year is ideal, simply because of great weather and an abundance of activities, wineries are much busier, and you can expect to see higher rates for accommodations, increased traffic, and more massive crowds at tasting rooms and vineyards.

Fire Season in Wine Country

Fires are an increasing threat throughout California, and both Sonoma and Napa have been subject to large-scale blazes over the past several years. Wildfires are most common in the late fall and winter when dead vegetation and high winds can quickly spark flames.

With California's wine country drawing more than 20 million visitors each year and employing 325,000 people, winemakers worry that the threat of fire will keep visitors away. In all reality, it shouldn't. Even after the fires, most of the surrounding wineries, tasting rooms, hotels, and other businesses were open as usual.

Spring in Napa and Sonoma can be variable, with a mix of rainy and sunny days, but overall, this is a beautiful time of year to visit—as long as you don't mind bare vines. At this time of year, the vineyards are just sprouting their first shoots, which is called "bud break." Temperatures are typically in the 60s and 70s F, with nights cooling to the mid-40s and 50s F.

Events to check out:

  • The Napa Valley Marathon takes place each year in March, running 26.2 miles from Napa to Calistoga.
  • Kendall-Jackson's farm-to-table dinner series kicks off in early May. These open-air feasts are held in the stunning gardens at the Kendall-Jackson Estate gardens and feature a curated menu from the winery's culinary team, master gardener, and winemaker. They're held throughout the spring, summer, and fall but sell out quickly.

Summertime in Wine Country means bright, sunny, and long days. Vineyards are typically lush and green by this point, and crowds and traffic can be intense. Even though wineries aren't quite as active as they are during harvest, there's still plenty of activity as winemakers groom their vines and keep an eye out for the first clusters of grapes starting to form. Harvest of grapes for sparkling wine can kick off as soon as August some years. Rain is rare during the summer months, and temperatures are usually quite warm—with daily highs in the mid-80s F and sometimes even higher.

  • Festival Napa Valley  is held each year in mid-late July and celebrates the region's wine, food, and lifestyle.
  • Music in the Vineyards is a popular summertime event that involves chamber music played in intimate winery settings. The series runs throughout August.
  • Many vineyards hold their own special events throughout the summer, ranging from yoga to film screenings to picnics. Check Visit Napa Valley or Sonoma County Tourism for comprehensive calendars.

Fall in wine country is prime time for harvest and other activities, but tasting rooms can be crowded as visitors flock to the region to see fall colors and ripe grape clusters on the vines. Most of the actual harvest takes place under cover of night, to keep the grapes cool, but many wineries host special events, including blending seminars and in-depth tours. Temperatures fluctuate throughout the fall, with some stretches in September seeing high temperatures well into the 80s F, and lows dipping into the 40s F at night. This is mostly a dry season, with minimal rainfall.

  • Schramsberg , a producer of famous sparkling wines, hosts a hands-on, immersive camp during harvest season. Regardless of wine expertise, "campers" are invited to participate in the wine-making process from start to finish.
  • The Napa Valley Film Festival takes place in November. While it's smaller than other festivals, it still draws a large contingent of celebrities and top-class films.
  • Jordan Winery , in Healdsburg, holds a series of popular harvest lunches throughout the fall. Centered around a theme and often drawing on family recipes from the winery's staff, these multi-course outdoor meals are paired with the winery's award-winning cuvées.
  • The Sonoma Harvest Music Festival is held in late September and draws top musicians to this laidback destination. Past performers include Chvrches, the Avett Brothers, and Death Cab for Cutie.
  • BottleRock is a large music festival held each year in Napa. BottleRock draws large crowds and hotels and accommodations book up quickly.

Winter can be a great time to visit Napa or Sonoma. All the crowds associated with harvest are gone and, while the vines are now bare until the following year, the lack of people means that you'll find empty tasting rooms and peaceful tours. As a bonus, California's winter weather is still much milder than many other destinations. While this is the rainiest time of the year, temperatures often still hover in the 50s and 60s F. Olive oil harvest takes place in November and December and, if you visit in February, you'll likely catch sight of the vibrant yellow mustard flowers blooming throughout the valleys.

  • Napa Valley Restaurant Week is held in late January and offers discounted menus at some of the area's top restaurants.
  • In December, the quaint Napa Valley town of Calistoga holds a festive lighted tractor parade down its main street.
  • Santa Rosa hosts a handmade crafts fair each year, bringing in more than 90 local vendors and artisans from throughout the region. There is also live entertainment and snacks for purchase.
  • Winter is a great time to lace up your boots and hit the trail! The 805-acre Armstrong Redwoods State Natural Reserve in Sonoma County is among the best places to see California's dramatic, towering redwoods .

The best time to visit Napa and Sonoma Valleys is during the late summer and early fall, when vineyard vines are weighed down with grapes and the wineries are full of harvest activity.

Most wineries in California's wine country are open for tastings year-round, during regular business hours. The vineyards conduct both indoor and outdoor tastings, so it's possible to social distance while you enjoy a drink.

Napa Valley tends to be more commercialized and expensive than Sonoma Valley. Sonoma, on the other hand, is more spread out and laid back. It's almost double the size of Napa Valley, growing far more grapes with different flavors.

When Is the Best Time to Visit California?

By Chris Allsop

Last updated: December 19th, 2022

Best time to visit California - Golden Gate Bridge

  • Find a Cruise

The best time to visit California, famous for its bronzed surf culture and abundance of sun, falls into a wide meteorological window.

Such a long body of land throws up broad regional variation. Summer highs extend deeper into the year at California’s Mexico-bordering southern tip than it does in famously foggy San Francisco in the north.

While the best time to go to California is during the spring and summer months, it can still be fine in San Diego reaching into late autumn, with the surfers only beginning to change into thicker wetsuits come October. Be aware, though, that precipitation can increase substantially during El Niño years.

Visiting California By Season

Shoreline of Santa Monica Pier

Summer in California is a time of cobalt blue skies, endless sunshine, and average temperatures between 66°F and 86°F or 19° and 30°C. Along the coast in early June, you can sometimes encounter what the locals refer to as “June gloom”. This phenomenon refers to a marine layer of cloud that burns off as the morning grows late.

As such, the months of July and August are the best time to visit California for consistently fine, hot weather. By the time the highs of August arrive, visitors and locals are flocking to the cooling sea breezes and the ice cream parlors of the beach cities. Rainfall throughout the state is so low at this time as to be irrelevant.

Read: Best Family Beaches in California

Fall is arguably the best time to visit California, with outstanding temperatures persisting throughout the state and a drop in visitor numbers. Los Angeles enjoys a range of daily highs from 84°F or 29°C in September to 73°F or 23°C in November. San Diego drops from 79°F or 26°C to 70°F or 21°C over the same period.

Meanwhile, San Francisco in September offers its best temperatures of the year 72°F or 22°C, with minimal rainfall and little sign of the famous fog rolling into the bay. Ride a tram through the city, cycle the Golden Gate Bridge and catch a ferry to Alcatraz beneath radiant blue skies.

Or head further north still, to the vinelands of Napa Valley and coastal Sonoma. Have tastings at vineyards during the grape harvesting season and hike the redwood-shaded trails.

Napa Valley in autumn

Napa Valley

Winters are mild and a little wet, more so in the north, with January in San Francisco receiving an annual high of 127mm of rain while temperatures remain relatively mild at 57°F or 14°C.

In the far south of the state, San Diego has daily highs of 66°F or 19°C with under half the amount of San Francisco’s average rainfall.

Arrive in southern California in March and you’ll find snow on the mountains and many beautiful days in Los Angeles and San Diego. Daytime temperatures average around 70°F or 21°C in the south, while visitors to San Francisco at this time should pack a light jacket with highs of 61°F or 16°C.

Come in May, and the chance of rainfall in southern California has dropped significantly since March from 77mm to 6mm, with a corresponding drop-off in San Francisco from 91mm to 9mm. Over the same period, temperatures have risen in both the north and the south by a good few degrees.

April heralds wildflower season in the high desert. Late spring also brings Cinco de Mayo festivities to the southern cities and a sense that, despite the occasional “May gray” marine layer, summer is imminent.

When Is Rainy Season?

The winter months of December, January, and February are typically the wettest in the state. The amount dispensed by the heavens varies by latitude, as you might expect.

If it should rain while in San Francisco, find shelter in the Aquarium of the Bay, the Museum of Modern Art, or one of its heavenly-scented coffee shops. If it rains while you’re in Los Angeles, it’s possible that you won’t even notice.

When Is High Season?

The summer is the high season in California, with June through to August seeing the greatest influx of visitors to the state as the fine weather settles in for the duration. The north can still be a little cool, with San Francisco’s atmospheric fog smothering the Golden Gate Bridge during this period.

In southern California, the temperatures are wonderful, the sea is warmer, and the pastels of the sportscars cruising the Pacific Coast Highway pop beneath the sunshine.

Best time to visit California - Pacific Coast Highway

Pacific Coast Highway

When Is Shoulder Season?

The Golden State’s shoulder seasons are late spring, April and May, and early fall, September and October. Late spring brings very pleasant temperatures, wildflowers gilding the national park hiking trails, and there’s more space on the beaches.

In early fall, gentler temperatures arrive in southern California. This is also the best time of year to visit northern California during its “Indian Summer”, with autumn beginning to flood the city parks and countryside with arboreal color.

When Is Low Season?

Through November to March, California’s low season, the lines for rides in Disneyland are noticeably shorter. Nevertheless, the weather remains mild and this is the best time of year for visiting the state’s deserts, such as Joshua Tree and Death Valley. Swim in the ocean in the morning and ski in the afternoon with plenty of powder in the higher elevations.

Winter – December to March

The coldest time of year is most certainly the winter in Northern California. However, it has its perks.

Mountain regions : Areas like Lake Tahoe and Yosemite will get blanketed in snow. Tahoe is an incredible ski destination (part of it is in Nevada) so if you plan to hit the slopes, the months of December through March is the time to visit and you can rent incredible Airbnbs there . For Yosemite, you’ll need proper mountain tires and chains to enter the valley depending on the amount of snow. Keep this in mind if you want to visit the valley. We’ve done it once and absolutely adored seeing the park in the snow.

Wine country : If you’re looking to score a hotel deal in Sonoma or Napa Valley, the prices are at its best in the winter. This is still a great time of year to visit Northern California’s wine country as most of the experiences are indoors. The vineyards may be a bit baren but none the less the same experience. These Airbnbs in Sonoma are also wonderful for a weekend escape.

San Francisco : I give San Francisco its own category as its the most particular for the weather. In winter, you’ll have the clearest days with the least fog. In exchange, you’ll get a bit colder weather in the city. December is a fun month in San Francisco as Union Square will get an ice rink and completely decorated for the holidays which is very festive.

The Coast: The coast of Northern California is an outlier for the weather. I feel like the coast is almost anywhere from 45-55 degrees year-round especially late fall through summer. Carmel is even wonderful this time of year. It’s still a nice time of year to go for a drive and will need to bundle up for the wind. Here are a few places to visit along the coast .

Spring – April to May

Mountain regions:  This year is a bit tricky in areas, like Tahoe. I call it mud season as the snow is melting but it’s not completely quite gone. Too cold to swim and not enough snow to ski. It’s a good time of year to visit if you plan to drive around the lake and will have a limited amount of hiking to do. For Yosemite , by spring the snow has usually melted away and the park comes to life. May, in fact, is my favorite month to visit Yosemite. Some of the upper trails may be closed due to leftover snow, but you can still do a ton on the valley floor before the summer crowds.

Wine country: The mustard fields come alive and the vineyards are green. This is an awesome time of year to visit wine country as it’s truly scenic. There may be a few days of showers throughout but none the less beautiful. You could even visit both valleys in a few days .

San Francisco:  A great time of year to visit before the foggy months kick in. The crowds also seem to be lighter this time of year.

The Coast:  As the coast tends to keep a similar temperature year-round, April and May are a safe bet for visiting the coast. I love this three-night road trip up the northern coast .

Summer – June to September

Mountain regions: This is one of the busiest times of years for Yosemite National Park. I’d personally avoid weekends as the queues to get into the park can be long and the traffic is dense. However, you do get longer days and great weather for hikes in Yosemite . Lake Tahoe this time of year is also great to visit. Lake Tahoe is perfect for a swim or renting a boat, even a hike in the mountains is great this time of year — here’s a quick summer guide .

Wine country:  The summer months in wine country are warm. The weather gets hot, so I’d plan out some pool time if you’re staying overnight. The days are longer, festivals are frequent and there’s a lot to do. It is also the busiest season with weekends packing in traffic.

San Francisco : Mark Twain once said the coldest winter he ever had was a summer in San Francisco. We have even named the fog, Karl. It’s a tough time of year to really see the Golden Gate Bridge as the fog comes in thick. The summers may have a lot to do nearby but can almost guarantee a few foggy and very windy days in a week.  We have an “Indian summer” in San Francisco, which means the months of late September to October are unseasonably warm.

The Coast: Depending on the day, you will often get very foggy mornings that will burn off by the early afternoon. You can have some wonderful beach days on the coast of Northern California this time of year.

  • here are a few things to do in the summer in Northern California .

Fall – October – November

Mountain regions : This is my favorite time to visit Northern California. Fall colors kick into gear, fewer crowds, and mild temperatures. Yosemite is magical in the fall before the first snowfall. Lake Tahoe is still warm enough for hiking as long as the snow hasn’t hit yet.

Wine country: It’s the season with the most events in the valley — harvest season! There is a lot to do in Napa and Sonoma. A lot of wineries have harvest events you can partake in as well.

San Francisco : Early October is one of the best times of years to visit sans crowds and mild temperatures.

The Coast : I love a fall road trip up the coast of California. You’ll get sunny days through October and the roads are empty. Mendocino is particularly wonderful this time of year or you can even adventure further north up the Redwood Coast with this itinerary .

Ps — are you booking a trip soon use my booking checklist.

These are the sites I use most to book my own trips. Using the links below is a great way to support Bon Traveler’s travel journalism at no extra cost to you . If you need help organizing your itinerary, get my free travel itinerary template here .

1. Book Your Flights

Use Skyscanner to find the best flights. It searches 100s of airlines and websites across the globe to ensure you’re not missing out on any route options or deals.

2. Book Your Accommodations

Use Booking.com for hotels and guest houses. They have the biggest inventory and consistently offer the best rates.

3. Book Your Tours & Experiences

Use Viator or Get Your Guide to find the best tours and experiences. They are my favorite tour search engines. I always check both as their inventory varies depending on the destination.

4. Book Your Car

Use Discover Cars or Rentalcars.com to find the best car rental deals. I recommend comparing rental agency reviews on Google to ensure you are booking with the best company in that destination, as the reviews are often more accurate than the car rental search engines.

5. Don’t Forget Airport Lounge Access

Get a Priority Pass membership to gain access to 1,400+ VIP lounges and airport experiences worldwide. The Priority Pass app is the first thing I check when I have a layover. I’ve been a member for over a decade, and having a comfortable place to relax before and between flights makes air travel so much more enjoyable.

6. Don’t Forget Travel Insurance

I never leave the country without travel insurance. It provides comprehensive protection in case anything goes wrong (ie. illness, injury, theft, and cancelations, etc.). I use it frequently for my travels to stay protected.

My favorite companies that offer the best coverage and rates are:

  • World Nomads (best for all-around)
  • Safety Wing (best for frequent travelers)

When is the Best Time to Visit California?

  • FIRST POSTED: 14th January 2022 | LAST UPDATED: 18th February 2022
  • 9 minute read

California is a great place to visit any time of the year. The Golden State has a lot to offer for everyone, and you are guaranteed to enjoy your trip regardless of the time of your visit. But certain activities or attractions are best enjoyed at particular times of the year, particularly if you want to avoid peak times for tourism or enjoy certain kinds of weather.

We tend to visit California in the summer, but have now had a holiday to the state at many other times of the year. General advice is that the best time of the year to visit is in the spring during April and the fall in September or October, as it won’t be as crowded but the weather will still be very pleasant. If you are after hot weather then Pal Springs sees the highest temperatures over the summer, but you’ll still get lots of sunshine in northern and southern towns and cities between June and September.

If you are thinking of visiting California but not sure when to go, here are my recommendations for each month.

Yosemite in the Snow

California in January

California in January enjoys pretty cool weather, with an average high temperature of 15°C and an average low of -5°C. This will vary across the state, with g enerally milder weather in the south and lower temperatures in the north, particularly in the mountains. Chances of rain also vary, but most places will see at least several days of heavy, wet weather or even snow.

Most areas in California experience the off-season for tourism in January, except the snowy areas like Lake Tahoe. Events like the Palm Springs International Film Festival bring people to the Los Angeles area, and the Joshua Tree National Park will start to see more crowds during this month.

Visiting California in January offers an abundance of excellent attractions to explore. Head to the Big Bear Lake, a mountain resort perfect for winter sports activities such as skiing, snowboarding and sledging. Check out the Palm Springs aerial tramway, where you can glimpse the most incredible mountain views and take up some winter activities. Mount Laguna is also a great time to visit in January, especially if you’re fond of adventurous activities.

California in February

In February the weather in California is generally damp, with cooler temperatures leading to fewer crowds. Daytime temperatures have a high average of around 15°C across the state, with lows running between 8°C and 11°C. Ther e’s more rainfall in February than at the start of the year, but still a fair amount of sunshine and dry weather to balance it out.

February is off-season in most parts of California unless you’re visiting Lake Tahoe, which is usually filled with skiers. Visit Chinatown in San Francisco to witness the lively lunar new year celebration, or soak up as much sun as possible at this time of year by staying in Palm Springs.

February is also a great month to explore California’s wildlife. You can go whale watching at Point Reyes National Seashore, see the elephant seals at Piedras Blancas, or watch Monarch butterflies flit along the coast between Mendoc ino and San Diego.

California in March

March marks the decline of the cool winter weather in California and welcomes the arrival of a dry and hot summer. There are still fewer tourists this time than later in the year however, making it an excellent time to explore the Golden State.

The desert areas will start to heat up in March, marking the end of tourist season in these parts of California. Elsewhere, the average high temperature will be between 16°C and 19°C, with typical lows of around 9°C.

California Coastline

California in April

Depending on which areas you visit, the weather in April in California is highly variable. The temperature could get incredibly hot in the desert, reaching up to 31° degrees in Palm Springs and the surrounding desert. But in San Francisco and some other regions in the north, the temperature has an average of 17°C, with fair chances of rain and even frost and ice in areas of high elevation.

When visiting California in April, be mindful of the spring break tourist crowds. The state is packed with events across the month suitable for all tastes, whether you’re planning to attend music festivals, cultural activities, explore national parks, and more. The most famous festival you can witness in California this month is the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in Indio, famous for its celebrity attendees.

April is also the best time to visit California’s national parks, where you can go camping or hiking. But make sure to pack layers to keep you warm, as temperatures in Yosemite or Joshua Tree occasionally still drop to freezing at night.

California in May

California enjoys pretty warm daytime temperatures overall in May, although this does depend on which part of the state you plan to visit. Lake Tahoe can still sometimes see lows of 3°C, whilst Death Valley can get extremely hot, going over 38°. The Pacific Ocean will start to warm up in spring, but some people will still find it cold to swim, although beaches along the coast will still be busy.

Being close to the Mexican border means California turns especially festive in May due to Cinco de Mayo. People will also be flocking to the beach cities for Memorial Day Weekend, so expect the beaches to be crowded.

In May, some of the best things to do in California are whale watching and witnessing the Eta Aquarid Meteor Shower, which is best observed away from crowded cities, such as Lake Shasta and Joshua Tree. National parks such as Joshua Tree and Yosemite will experience high numbers of visitors during this time however, so be prepared to see plenty of other travellers.

California in June

In June, California’s weather ranges from comfortably warm to very hot during the day in most places, ranging from 24°C to 40°C in some parts of the desert. Chances of rain are pretty low, so you can be confident that you’re going to get hot and sunny weather almost wherever you are.

June is the best time to visit California beaches and mountains to drink your fill of the state’s brilliant outdoor scenery. California’s famous national parks, including Yosemite, tend to see their largest crowds in June, so if you’re after a solitary hiking trip this may not be the best time to visit. June is also the best time to visit California for local fruit, so if you have the chance check out the many farmer’s markets and get a taste of the state’s freshest produce.

San Francisco hosts the world-famous pride parades and events dedicated to LGBTQ people in late June, so expect the city to be incredibly busy around this time. Popular attractions like Disneyland will also be busy this month, with many families coming for an early summer holiday before the real peak in July and August.

Street in Hollywood

California in July

July is California’s hottest and driest month, especially in the desert and the southern and central areas of the state, with average temperatures usually around 40°C. Therefore, when visiting California in July, head to the coastal areas to escape the intense heat and enjoy much more bearable highs of 29°C in Los Angeles and 19° in San Francisco.

In July, the best things to do in California will depend on which area you will visit. In Northern California, check out its farmlands and visit the rodeo in Salinas or take part in the Gilroy Garlic Festival. If you’re visiting South California in July, head to the beach regions to soak up as much sun as possible out on the sand, in places such as in Santa Monica. Don’t miss the chance to witness beach events like the US Open in Huntington Beach, where world-famous surfers compete out on the waves.

July is the peak season for tourists visiting California’s national parks. If you want to explore a national park in July, it is better to head to Kings Canyon National Park, as it has a smaller crowd than Yosemite.

California in August

Similar to July, most areas in California are hot and dry in August. It’s the peak of summer, and many places see their highest influx of tourists for the whole year who all arrive to make the most of the heat and minuscule chances of rain.

August is the best time to visit California’s wineries, so most visitors to the state head to Napa and Sonoma Valleys. Most wineries start harvesting grapes in August until October, so it’s a great time to sample the first of the season’s produce and enjoy the atmosphere of these luxurious areas of California.

Many school districts in North America resume classes in mid-August, so popular vacation spots like Disneyland will see fewer crowds as the month winds down. Campgrounds, forests, and lakes will also be quieter at this time, but remember that August is when wildfires often begin. The safest plan, therefore, is to avoid the parks and stay close to the beaches instead.

California in September

Temperatures start to drop in California in September, making this month the turning point for the weather in the state. High temperatures in the daytime average at around 21°C across most parts of the state, occasionally reaching the high twenties on sunny days and usually dropping to around 14°C at night.

September is viewed by many as the best time of the year to visit California, particularly during the middle or later part of the month when tourism levels are lower but the weather is still relatively warm and dry.

With Labor Day activities kicking off in September and early Halloween celebrations ending it, this month is also one of the most action-packed times to visit California. In Los Angeles, the Los Angeles County Fair takes place, considered one of the state’s biggest county fairs. Late September is also the best time to visit Disneyland California, as the lead up to Halloween begins and you will find the famous theme park transformed into holiday themes with festive and spooky decorations all around.

Golden Gate Bridge at Sunset

California in October

October is one of the best times to visit California if you don’t like extreme heat, with comfortable daytime temperatures averaging around 18°C to 20°C in most places. Places at higher elevations will be cooler, especially in the evening and early morning.

When visiting California in October, be mindful of wildfires, as these are common during this time of the year.

The best thing to do in California in October is to attend fun Halloween events at various places all over the state. Visiting Disneyland is also fun since the park will be brightly decorated in fun Halloween and fall-themed decor. For classic seasonal experiences, visit a pumpkin patch or celebrate the Dia de Los Muertos (Day of the Dead) with the locals.

California in November

Temperatures drop across California in November as the rainy season begins. Towards the end of the month, you should expect light showers most days, but temperatures will average around 17°C  in most places, so it won’t be too cold to spend a long time outdoors.

Whale watching is a really popular activity in California in November, where you can witness grey whales migrating south towards Mexico. November is also a great time to watch football and witness fun Thanksgiving celebrations across the state. During Thanksgiving week, many people will be travelling to visit families which can make transport systems very busy, so if you want to avoid the crowds, try to visit early in the month.

California in December

There are so many brilliant things to do in California in December. From enjoying the last of the surfing season on the Southern California beaches to skiing in the mountains, December is definitely one of the best times of the year to visit California if you’re looking for a variety of things to do.

While the weather varies depending on which part of the state you visit, California generally enjoys a comfortable temperature for the entire month of December. Daytime averages hover around 15°C, dropping to almost freezing in the northern areas of the state and staying warmer in the south. December is quite a wet time of the year, so be prepared for regular showers in most parts of the state.

Many Californian cities will be at their prettiest in December, with major buildings and streets decorated with colourful ornaments for Christmas, Hanukkah, and Kwanzaa celebrations. Head to San Diego to participate in the city’s festive Christmas celebrations, witness the rose parade in Pasadena, spend an evening on Olvera Street in Los Angeles to celebrate Christmas, or take a trip to Disneyland to enjoy the park’s many festive holiday events.

California Zephyr Best Time of Year and Side of Train

Robert Marmion

The Amtrak California Zephyr is a once in a lifetime experience, so riding it at the best time of year and being on the best side of the train are critical. We’ve taken this train trip in all seasons and the best time of year to be on the California Zephyr is the fall. The best side of the California Zephyr to be on is the south side of the train. If you are heading west that is the left side in the direction of travel and if you are heading east it is the right side in the direction of travel.

  • 1 Best Months to Ride the California Zephyr
  • 2 California Zephyr In The Fall

Best Months to Ride the California Zephyr

California zephyr in the fall.

The prettiest time to ride the California Zephyr is from mid September to late September when the fall colors are beautiful in the gorges of Colorado.

The Colorado section of the trip is the highlight, so plan your trip around the weather in that area only. Most years the fall colors peak between mid September and early October in Colorado.

If you wait too long into the fall, such as late October and early November, you’ll miss the fall colors and be too early for the best snow scenery as well. November is the worst month to ride the California Zephyr as you’ll be dealing with colder temperatures and probably not have the best scenery.

California Zephyr Best Time of Year

California Zephyr in Winter

Riding the California Zephyr in winter is a delight. You’ll see snow covered mountains and gorges that will amaze you. Make sure you’ve given enough time for a decent snow fall before your trip. The early winter months of November and December are not ideal as there isn’t enough snow on the ground. February is the best winter month to ride the California Zephyr due to the heavy amounts of snow falling in the area. March is also good.

The views in winter are simply wonderful. It is an incredible feeling to see the snow capped Rocky Mountains outside your windows as you ride through Colorado.

California Zephyr in winter

California Zephyr in Spring

In Spring the snow melts and gives way to green vistas again. As with other seasons you want to be careful to not be on board between seasons, when the snow is gone, but the new growth has not happened yet. Spring is not our favorite time to be on the California Zephyr, but May is a good choice due to lower crowds if you need to visit in this time frame.

California Zephyr in Summer

The worst season to ride the California Zephyr is the summer. You’ll be riding with more passengers and miss out on both fall colors and snow. The positive aspect of this time frame is that you’ll have more light in the day and should have good weather. This is our least favorite time to ride the train.

California Zephyr Best Side Of The Train

The views are best from the south side of the California Zephyr . You’ll see the absolute best views and gorges during the Colorado section if you are on the south side of the train during this section.

If you are facing the north side you’ll also see great views, but not the most stunning parts of the canyon. As you get into California, and near the Donner Pass area, the views are better to the north.

The best thing you can do is get to the observation car before the canyon section of the trip and you’ll be able to see out both sides. During summer months we have seen trains limit the amount of time passengers can spend in the observation car due to crowding. This is less of a problem during the winter.

If you are wanting to take photographs of the canyons from the train, follow these Amtrak train photography tips .

California Zephyr in Sleeper Cars

If you are riding in a sleeper car, you cannot guarantee which side of the train you’ll be on. The cars are often put on in different orders and directions so on some trips a car may be facing the opposite direction. When you board, check which side you are on and make a plan to get to observation car, or dining car to see what you want to see.

You’ll have traditional dining on the California Zephyr, which is a long meal. You can ask your dining car attendant to be on a specific side of the train and enjoy the views from whichever side you want. Eat your meal slow and soak up the views as this is one of the best train experiences you can have anywhere in the world.

California Zephyr in Coach

If you are in Coach Class you’ll likely have more options for getting the seat you want. Sometimes you’ll be assigned a seat ahead of time and other times it will be open seating, where you can pick a seat when you board and then that is your seat for the entire trip. If that is the case just pick a seat on the side you want and you’ll be all set. If you end up on the wrong side of the train, just ask a conductor if you can switch sides to your preferred side, and they will usually accommodate you.

California Zephyr Scenery

If you’d like to see the actual scenery you’ll be seeing on the trip, we made a ride along video during a late September trip of just the views from the train.

The California Zephyr is the prettiest rail route in the United States so it is important to get your timing right on this vacation. With some planning ahead of time you should be able to see the best sights at the right time of year and from the best side of the train.

I am obsessed with this soft-sided checked bag – it fits an absurd amount of stuff. You can easily pack enough clothes, shoes, accessories and gear for a two- to three-week trip, and even when it's filled to the brim, the wheels and handle make it easy to maneuver the suitcase across many types of terrain. Mine has been checked numerous times, and the darker-colored fabric with its subtle design means any scuffs are pretty impossible to see and it hasn't scratched or dented at all. – Erin Evans, Managing Editor

The double wheels will allow you to navigate any airport or destination with ease. The Freeform also comes in medium and carry-on sizes, as well as a two-piece set.

I used to only use soft-sided luggage, but I've been won over by this suitcase. I love how easy it is to maneuver and lift such a large bag during my travels. Like many Travelpro luggage pieces, the Travelpro Crew Classic Large Check-in Expandable Spinner comes with a plethora of handy features. There are also interior pockets (including a water-resistant one) and hold-down straps for keeping your belongings organized and secure.

This Travelpro spinner can hold plenty at 130 liters, but if you need something even bigger, the Travelpro Platinum Elite Large Check-In Spinner is a great alternative with many of the same features and 143.5 liters of space.

I was shocked at how lightweight this suitcase was for its size. The fold-out suiter is a game-changer for business travel or travel that requires formal attire, like a cruise or destination wedding . – Leilani Osmundson, Senior Digital Producer

This checked bag also comes with a color-matched luggage tag. For the inevitable scratches, you can use a magic eraser to wipe the bag clean.

The flat-top opening on this large suitcase really makes it stand out from the crowd. Given its size, the top opening makes it easy to pack and close the suitcase when you have limited space. If you're the type of person that likes to transfer your clothes from your suitcase to the hotel dresser upon arrival to keep things organized, this Solgaard suitcase is for you. With its built-in shelving system, you don't have to unpack – just pack your clothes into the five shelves and, when you get to the hotel, hang the removable shelving system for easy access. The suitcase is made with a durable polycarbonate shell. It comes with a TSA-approved three-digit lock, and the frictionless wheels paired with its comfortable handle make this checked bag easy to maneuver.

What our contributors say:

Not only does this suitcase make it easier to travel, but I also love that it is designed with sustainability in mind. Each one is made from 100% recycled plastic that is collected in coastal communities, in order to prevent it from going into the ocean. The one downside is that the shelving does take up some room, so you might be trading convenience for maximum capacity. – Sharael Kolberg

How we tested

Taking into account durability, capacity and features, our team tested more than a dozen checked bags from a variety of brands at a range of price points. We tested to see how the overall structure of the bag works for travel needs, along with the maneuverability of the wheels and comfort of the handle on a range of surfaces from moving walkways to cobblestones. After taking these suitcases on a variety of journeys, we've selected these checked suitcases as the best for 2024.

When is the next total solar eclipse in the US after 2024 and what is its path? What to know

The highly anticipated 2024 total solar eclipse will cross North America on Monday , giving millions of sky-gazers the chance to see a rare cosmic event that won't be viewable again for 20 years.

The eclipse's  path of totality  will travel over a portion of northern Mexico before entering the U.S. It then it will cross 13 states  from Texas to Maine, where the spectacle is expected to attract huge crowds.

If you aren't lucky enough to be in the path of totality this time around, you will have another chance - you'll just have to wait until the 2040s.

Here's what we know about the next total solar eclipse to cross over the U.S.

Eclipse playlist: Fans return to Bonnie Tyler's 'Total Eclipse of the Heart' ahead of total solar eclipse

When is the next total solar eclipse visible from the U.S.?

It will be 20 years before there's a chance to  witness a total solar eclipse  in the United States again.

According to NASA, after Monday's total solar  eclipse , the next one viewable from the contiguous U.S. will be on Aug. 23, 2044.

2044 total solar eclipse path of totality

Unfortunately, the 2044 total  solar eclipse  won't have the broad reach across the U.S. as the 2024 eclipse.

The path of totality during the 2044 eclipse will only touch three states, according to the Planetary Society, a nonprofit involved in research, public outreach, and political space advocacy.

The eclipse will begin in Greenland, sweep through Canada and end around sunset in Montana, North Dakota and South Dakota.

Pets and the eclipse: Will my pets be safe during the April 2024 solar eclipse? What experts say.

2045 solar eclipse

While the 2044 total eclipse will only touch three states, a 2045 eclipse will have a more robust path across the U.S.

Expected to occur on Saturday, Aug. 12, 2045, this solar eclipse will trace a path of totality over California, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Kansas, Texas, Arkansas, Missouri, Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama, Florida, and Georgia.

A partial solar eclipse will also be viewable in 35 other states, according to National Eclipse.com

What is a total solar eclipse?

Any celestial object like a moon or a planet that passes between two other bodies can create  an eclipse  by obscuring the view of objects like the sun.

In the event of a solar eclipse, the moon comes in between the Earth and the sun, blocking its light from reaching a small part of our planet. Partial eclipses, when some part of the sun remains visible, are the most common, making total eclipses a rare sight to behold.

Total eclipses can lead to a period of darkness lasting for several minutes, during which time nocturnal animals stir while confused birds and insects may fall silent, NASA says.

When a solar eclipse reaches totality, people are able to see the sun’s outer atmosphere called the corona, which is usually obscured by the sun's bright surface. This offers scientists an uncommon opportunity  to study the corona .

Totality also offers spectators a chance to gaze upon the spectacular sight with the naked eye, though  proper  safety  glasses  are still required for the rest of the time.

What states are on the 2024 eclipse path of totality?

Mexico's Pacific coast will be the first location in continental North America to experience totality, which is expected to occur at about 11:07 a.m. PDT,  according to NASA .

As the moon's shadow will northeast, totality in the U.S. will begin in Texas at 1:27 p.m. CDT. The path will then cut diagonally across the country, traveling through Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont and New Hampshire.

The eclipse's path is expected to end in Maine at 3:35 p.m. EDT before visiting the maritime provinces of Canada, according to estimates.

Solar eclipse 2024: Photos from the path of totality and elsewhere in the U.S.

Images show the Great American Eclipse, seen by tens of millions of people in parts of Mexico, 15 U.S. states and eastern Canada for the first time since 2017.

Millions gathered across North America on Monday to bask in the glory of the Great American Eclipse — the moment when the moon passes between the Earth and the sun.

The path of totality measures more than 100 miles wide and will first be visible on Mexico’s Pacific coast before moving northeast through Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois and upward toward New York, New Hampshire and Maine, then on to Canada.

Total solar eclipse 2024 highlights: Live coverage, videos and more

During the cosmic spectacle, the moon’s movements will temporarily block the sun’s light, creating minutes of darkness, and will make the sun's outer atmosphere, or the corona, visible as a glowing halo.

Here are moments of the celestial activities across the country:

When is the next total solar eclipse in the U.S.? See the paths for the 2044 and 2045 events

By Cara Tabachnick

Updated on: April 9, 2024 / 2:31 AM EDT / CBS News

Eclipse-watchers waited more than six years since the last time a total solar eclipse charted its way across the United States,  in 2017 . After the  April 8 event , prepare to wait a lot longer — the next chance won't be coming around any time soon.

Viewers in what's called " the path of totality " saw the moon completely block the sun  — an opportunity those in North America won't have again for 20-plus years. The next total solar eclipses in North America are not anticipated until 2044 and 2045.

"A total solar eclipse is one of the most spectacular things anyone can see in their lifetime," Virginia Tech astrophysicist Nahum Arav told CBS News. The eclipse "looks like a black hole in the sky," said Arav, who watched the paths of totality of eclipses in 1991 and 2017.

The total eclipse of the sun. The rays of light appear as

Monday's eclipse started around 11:07 a.m. PDT on the Pacific Coast of Mexico, and then moved into Texas . The eclipse's visibility tracked  through 15 states  — Oklahoma, Illinois , Ohio,  Pennsylvania , New York , Vermont ,  New Hampshire  and Maine , among them — before heading northward into Canada and then exiting North America.

Even with spotty weather in some states, millions of people from coast to coast saw a partial solar eclipse, in which the moon partially covers the sun. However, only those within the path of totality experienced the darkness of the total solar eclipse.

When is the next total solar eclipse in the U.S. after the 2024 eclipse?

Solar eclipses happen about twice a year, said Arav. "Eclipses happen all over the Earth evenly," he told CBS News — but noted the timings when they occur are not regular. That means  eclipses can occur within just a few years, or every few decades, in North America.

Before the eclipse in 2017, the last total solar eclipse to cross North America was in 1979 . That was the first eclipse whose path of totality crossed the entire continent in 99 years.

Even though eclipses may seem to occur randomly, scientists can pinpoint exactly when and where they will happen.

"There is no ambiguity, as we know exactly where it will land," said Arav.

There will be eight total solar eclipses visible from North America in the 21st century, Arav said, with one occurring about every 12 years, on average.

The next total solar eclipse to cross North America is predicted to occur on Aug. 23, 2044 , NASA said. However, the path of totality from this eclipse will only touch three states, according to  The Planetary Society, a nonprofit organization dedicated to public interest in space.

This next eclipse will mainly be observed in Canada, Arav said.

Path of totality for the 2044 total solar eclipse

The 2044 eclipse will start in Greenland on Aug. 23, 2044, and will continue its path through Canada.

The 2044 total solar eclipse will be short, mostly appearing in Canada. It will be visible from three states in the U.S.: Montana, North Dakota and South Dakota.

The path of totality will cross Williston and Dickinson, North Dakota, and Great Falls, Montana.

Map showing the path of the 2044 total solar eclipse from Greenland, Canada and parts of the United States.

Path of totality for the 2045 total solar eclipse

The next solar eclipse that crosses a significant portion of the continental U.S. will be in 2045, said Arav. That year, a solar eclipse will darken skies in parts of the U.S., Haiti, Dominican Republic, Venezuela, Guyana, French Guiana, Suriname and Brazil.

In North America, the 2045 total eclipse will be visible in many states as it moves from coast to coast. The eclipse will start in California and move east to end in Florida, similar to 2017, Arav said.

There will be numerous U.S. cities where eclipse watchers can view the total eclipse, including Reno, Nevada; Colorado Springs, Colorado; and Orlando, Florida.

United states map showing the path of the 2045 solar eclipse.

Future solar eclipses in North America after 2045

Scientists have predicted eight total solar eclipses will appear in North America in the 21st century.

"Natural phenomena are like a Swiss clock," Arav said. "We know exactly when and where they will appear."

After the 2044 and 2045 total solar eclipses, the next total eclipses in North America will occur in 2078 and 2099.

May 11, 2078

This total solar eclipse on May 11, 2078 , will pass over the southern United States.

Cities include:

Atlanta, Georgia

New Orleans, Louisiana

Charlotte, North Carolina

Virginia Beach, Virginia

Sept. 14, 2099

This total solar eclipse on Sept. 14, 2099 , will cross a wide swath of the United States.

Minneapolis, Minnesota

Milwaukee, Wisconsin

Chicago, Illinois

Columbus, Ohio

Fargo, North Dakota
