Cycle Provence
Cycle the Loire Valley
Fabulous leaders and incredible route - pathways along the river or back country roads or cycling through small cute towns. Mostly flat - and very nicely paced with coffee and photo stops, or lunch, or a chateau visit! Only reason this didn’t get excellent from me was some of the hotels could have been better (and their free breakfasts)
- Sightseeing
- Wine tasting
There were problems in getting correct tour information from tourradar/Explore and in trying to pay for the tour. Erwin was a very good tour leader, enthusiastic and helpful.

Loire Cycle Path: Wild-romantic all the way to the sea (from Orleans to St-Nazaire)
Fantastic trip. Hotels were tremendous, especially the meal in the hotel in Saint Florent-le-Vieil. Maps were good though I used my app Bikemap.net, to act as a Sat Nav. A couple of hiccups with luggaeew but minor in comparison with holiday organisation. Would certainly recommend.
Loire Cycle Path: Wild-romantic all the way to the sea (from Tours to St-Nazaire)
The luggage was always on site, the hotels so O.k. and the description was good. For the navigation I was glad about the Garmin Navi.

Provence | France | Guided Biketour
this tour company is out of Germany and we were the only english speaking guests. luckily the germans spoke some english and our guides spoke english as well but most casual conversations were in German. our guides were amazing and made us the most amazing picnics each day. 5 of our 7 nights were in very nice hotels but two of the nights we ended up in some 3 star tiny hotels. overall a great tour but americans beware that this company is newly trying to get americans to sign up and don’t really have the population to do so. you might be in groups that only the guides speak english and sometimes forget to give you the translation of instructions or information so you might have to ask.
Bike Tour, Provence, France (guided groups)
I have taken three tours with Chain Gang - Dordogne, Provence, and Tuscany. Hotel accommodations - mostly small and locally owned - are very nice without being over the top. Dinnertime meals are wonderful. The cycling routes are well planned out that are safe and largely free of motor traffic. Cycling is the perfect speed to see the landscape with a group of like-minded enthusiasts and the groups I've ridden with come from various countries (and continents!), so it has always been interesting company. Chain Gang tours also offer a nice range of difficulty levels - from relatively flat and lower distance tours to more challenging, hilly routes.

Bicycling Brittany and Normandy Plus! Bayeux and the D-Day Beaches
Brittany and Normandy are gorgeous as well as historic. And of course the French cuisine is always superb! It's wonderful part of France for cycling.
- Bike and Barge
Bike & barge tour Provence and Camargue: from Aigues-Mortes to Avignon
Very good crew who went out of their way to keep us happy and lovely travel companions. Great sights on the bikes and the bikes themselves very good. The boat is very comfortable and the rooms very small ( which we were forewarned). Our guide made sure there were many options both day and night to see extra. I was disappointed she lost people on 2 days, particularly as someone was hurt on one of those days. The food was very good with variety each night. I think everyone was pleased with the trip
Cycling the Dordogne Plus! the Vineyards of Bordeaux
I always have fantastic trips with Experience Plus! They have great tour leaders (enthusiastic and professional), good cycling (some days the quiet roads are particularly amazing), and their navigation system is great. This particular tour was a big one for me, with some notable cycling (some hills) and many great local-visit experiences. I highly recommend ExPlus.

Overall amazing experience! Met some amazing people and enjoyed some beautiful views. While it was the hottest time of the year, our team had a great support system to ensure everyone was well hydrated. The bikes were nice and sturdy, especially climbing up some of those monstrous hills and the paniers were very handy! I would recommend this trip to anyone looking to enjoy the countryside and south of France!

La Belle France
France bike tours.
Bordeaux · Chambord · Champagne · Loire Valley · Marseille · Medoc · Paris · Saint-Emilion
Spectacular culture, unrivaled cuisine, and picture-perfect countryside make France the perfect setting for a bike tour. As home to one of the most famous cycling races in the world, the Tour de France, the country enjoys a strong cycling culture, whether you’re pedaling along the backstreets of Paris, biking amongst the best vineyards in Europe, or cruising the coastline of the south.
There’s no better way to discover Paris, France’s chic capital, than by cycling. Take a city tour to discover the glittering icons of the 'City of Lights' in one day: the Eiffel Tower, Arc de Triomphe, Louvre Museum, and Notre-Dame Cathedral. Or, venture to Versailles, palatial court of the Sun King, to discover the country’s royal and revolutionary history.
Marseille is France’s second city, occupying an enviable position on the country’s southern coast. Historically a crossroads of trade and immigration, the city jostles with a rich cultural tapestry that melds European and African influences. Take a city tour to discover the Cathedral and the Old Port that lend Marseille its historic charm. For a different kind of day tour, pedal out to the Calanques, a national park of white cliffs and turquoise water, for a captivating coastal ride.
For those traveling to France to savor a culinary adventure, there’s no better destination than Lyon. Regarded by some as the gastronomic capital of the world, there are more restaurants per head here than in any other city in France. Take an e-bike tour with food tastings in Lyon to combine cultural sightseeing with a taste of local delicacies.
Venture into the low mountains of the Alpilles or pedal through Provence for a family-friendly tour of sun-baked Southern France. Just a stone’s throw from Bordeaux, meander through Medoc or cycle through Saint-Emilion on a guided tour of some of France’s most prominent viticultural hubs. Learn about the long history of winemaking in these regions and stop at some of the century-old chateaux for wine tasting flights and lunch.
“I had come to the conclusion that I must really be French, only no one had ever informed me of this fact. I loved the people, the food, the lay of the land, the civilized atmosphere, and the generous pace of life.”

Few countries stir the imagination like France. You may have already pictured yourself bicycling through small villages composed of beautiful stone buildings, quaint cafés, and Romanesque churches that gaze across the valley at each other under the Provençal sun. Perhaps you’ve imagined yourself strolling through the lovely cobblestone streets, or enjoying the local specialties as you fill your senses with the pervading sights and scents of a traditional market. You may have always wanted to look out from atop an impenetrable medieval castle or a luxurious Renaissance château, the entire place resonating with centuries of history, romance and revenge.
Let us help you bring these images alive. At ExperiencePlus! we’ve been leading bicycle and walking tours all over the world since 1972, and we have a number of bicycle tours in France. Discovering France by bike: instructions for use

Cycling Tourism
Reading time: 0 min Published on 25 October 2023, updated on 17 April 2024
With 26,115 kilometres of cycle routes and greenways, France is the world's second most popular destination for cycle tourism. And the champion when it comes to inventing great escapes to discover nature, heritage and local delicacies. Climb the mountains of the Alps or the Pyrenees in the wake of the Tour de France, stroll along the banks of the Loire between châteaux and vineyards, pedal along the coast or explore towns and cities by bike... We explain how to organise your touring trip, cycle in town, and book suitable accommodation and services. Saddle up!
1. plan your cycling itinerary
Unless you want to pedal with your nose to the wind as and when you feel like it, it's best to organise your cycling trip in advance so that you can make the most of it. Whether it's a weekend, a day trip, a mountain bike tour, a route specially adapted for families or a long-distance tour, the France Vélo Tourisme website lists the various cycle routes available in France: Eurovélo routes, national cycle routes, greenways, cycle paths, etc. An interactive map and search engine enable you to find the route you're looking for. An interactive map and search engine allow you to choose your route (a loop or a one-way trip), depending on your technical level (beginner, family or experienced cyclist), duration or theme (châteaux and monuments, in the heart of vineyards, in the mountains or by the sea). The websites of the regional and departmental tourist boards are also full of information to help you plan your cycling trip!
Take your own bike or hire one locally?
Each solution has its advantages. Cycling with your own bike is reassuring for experienced cyclists, but it has to be transported. Hiring a bike is more suitable if you don't want to worry about transport or if this is your first experience of travelling by bike.
Travelling with a bike
By train The train is the most practical mode of transport for cycle tourists. Some TGV lines have spaces reserved for bicycles that have not been dismantled, as do "Ouigo classic trains" (€10 supplement) and Intercités trains (€5 to €10) and Intercités night trains (€10). Booking is compulsory on these lines. Reservations are not compulsory on most TER lines (with some exceptions). It is also possible to travel with a folded or dismantled bicycle on the TGV Inoui and Intercités lines (at no extra charge) and on the Ouigo Grande vitesse and Ouigo train classique lines (booking required, with an extra charge of €5). The bicycle must be placed in a cover measuring no more than 90 x 130 cm. Recumbents, tricycles, tandems and trailers are not permitted. During the summer (from June to September or in July/August), special services are available on trains to increase capacity for transporting bicycles. Travelling by train with a bicycle
By bus Some bus companies accept bicycles, such as Flixbus, on condition that they are packed or placed in covers (extra charge of 9 euros), or BlaBlaCar Bus (in a cover, with a maximum weight of 23 kg). It is generally possible to transport bicycles by air, although each airline has its own rules (weight, size, pricing, etc.). Travelling by Flixbus coach with your bike Travelling by BlaBlaCar bus with your bike
By boat You can also travel by boat, usually on ferries, but also in summer on boats or ferries between the mainland and the islands (check with the shipping companies beforehand). For a nice roaming tour, you can also opt to hire a barge, especially with your family. It's an ideal way of combining a soft mobility trip with cycling!
Hire a bike
You can book a "one way" hire (you hire the bike in one place and return it in another) from a number of hire companies, particularly on certain cycle routes.
- Good to know : whether you choose to travel with your own bike or hire one, you can use luggage transport services (Bicybags, La Malle Postale, BagaFrance, Loire Vélo Nature, Bag Transfert, DeliverBag, etc.).
if the sunny days are making your legs tingle, saddle up! In the land of the Tour de France, there is no shortage of beautiful escapes. With 22,800 km of cycle routes and greenways, 5,500km of regional tourist routes, 3,000 road and mountain bike circuits inviting you to enjoy gentle pedalling as a couple, with your family or with friends. In the countryside, along a canal, by the sea, in the vineyards or in the mountains, from Northern France to the Côte d'Azur and from Brittany to Alsace... here's a small selection of the most beautiful tours and detours and discover France by bike.
Book accommodation, restaurants and other dedicated services
To travel by bike in optimum conditions, cycle tourists can use service providers with the "Accueil Vélo" label, all of which are listed on the France Vélo Tourisme website . More than 7,000 are listed: accommodation, restaurants, cycle hire and repair services, tourist offices and tourist sites. These businesses make a number of commitments: they must be located less than 5 kilometres from a cycle route, have facilities for cyclists (secure bike shelter, repair kit, plug for recharging, etc.), provide dedicated services (luggage transfer, washing and drying of clothes, bike washing, etc.) and offer a personalised welcome to cyclists (advice, weather, itineraries, etc.). The accommodation listed includes campsites, guest houses, hotels, unusual accommodation, self-catering cottages, etc. A community platform offers (with a subscription fee for the first year) home-stay accommodation for cyclists, and the Fédération Française de Cyclotourisme also lists the best places to stay. Find a restaurant close to cycle routes Search for "cycle-friendly" accommodation near cycle routes
2. Cycle routes in France
In France, each region offers an infinite number of routes to explore by bike, mountain bike or electric bike, as well as long-distance routes combining véloroutes and "voies vertes" (greenways) to discover the natural riches and heritage of the region: The Loire à vélo, along the king of rivers and his châteaux, the ViaRhôna, from Lake Geneva to the Mediterranean, the Vélodyssée, from the Basque country to Brittany or the Vélomaritime from Hauts-de-France to Finistère... Depending on your state of fitness and your desires, you can cycle part or all of them, unless you want to emulate the Tour de France riders and embark on a grand loop! Gourmets can also take advantage of the cycling and cheese routes : over 8,000 kilometres of routes and 1,500 cheese-making sites to cycle and enjoy!
Some not-to-be-missed cycle routes : La Loire à Vélo en Val de Loire the ViaRhôna from the Alps to Provence the Vélodyssée from Brittany to the Basque Country the Vélomaritime from Hauts-de-France to Brittany via Normandy
In towns and cities, cycling is a great way to get from one tourist site to another and around the surrounding area. Numerous improvements have been made in recent years to make French towns and cities even more accessible to cycle tourists, and the network of dedicated lanes is constantly expanding. All the major cities and many medium-sized towns have public bicycles available for hire (including long-term hire) at stations, based on the Vélib' model installed in the Paris region (1,443 stations in Paris and the surrounding area) and in 61 communes, with a fleet of almost 20,000 bicycles, 40% of which are electric (€1 for the first 30 minutes, €2 for each additional 30 minutes). Apps such as Weelo or Lime can also be used to hire electrically-assisted bicycles based on location. As well as the themed cycle tours and other bike treasure hunts on offer in Paris and many other major French cities, there are also long-distance routes such as the véloroutes that criss-cross the cities: in Paris, for example, you can cycle the Scandibérique route linking Belgium to Spain!
- Self-service bike hire schemes in France's major cities: Vélib' in Paris Levélo in Marseille Vélo'V in Lyon VélôToulouse Vélobleu in Nice Bicloo in Nantes Vélhop in Strasbourg V3 in Bordeaux V'Lille Star - le vélo à Rennes
4. Learning the rules of road safety
Before taking your first turn on the pedal, it's vital to know the rules of road safety, especially in town where cyclists share space with pedestrians, motorised two-wheelers and cars. On the French road safety website , visitors can consult a few tips for good cycling behaviour and download a full information leaflet.
- Good to know : helmets must be worn by children under the age of 12, whether drivers or passengers, and the use of devices likely to emit sound (earphones, earpieces, headphones) is prohibited on pain of a fine of €135. It is advisable to wear light colours, a hazard marker to prevent motorists from approaching, rear-view mirrors and trouser clips. Outside built-up areas, cyclists and their passengers must wear a certified retro-reflective jacket at night and in poor visibility.

Bike barge tour France — bon vivant by bike and boat
Fine French cuisine, equally good wine, charming chateaus, and a lust for life par excellence — it’s not hard to be tempted by a bike barge tour in France. And who are we to stop you! In fact, we too are lovers of cycle cruises exploring France’s classic landscapes, tumultuous history, indomitable culture and dangerously-good boulangeries, and offer a wide range of cycle and cruise tours throughout this diverse and very bike-friendly country.
Let’s start with the south: The city of Bordeaux combines cycling adventures, the finest of wines, the sun of southwest France, and the exceptional, culturally-rich city of Bordeaux itself. The Bordeaux bike and boat tour explores this wine region, discovering castles, grand architecture, beautiful rivers, superb museums, and world-class vineyards. Or perhaps opt for our Provence – Camargue tour from Avignon to Aigues Mortes, passing through wild nature, the Rhone Valley and Van Gogh’s Provence — and even spotting the Pont du Gard.
All roads lead to Paris on a bike barge tour France
Paris. Little needs to be said about the City of Lights and its famous Eiffel Tower, Louvre, Arc de Triomphe, grand bridges over the Seine River or its cozy bistros… But it must be said that Paris is a wonderful starting (or ending) point for bike barge tours in France.
Take, for example, the voyage of exploration along the Seine River from Paris to Montargis , taking in the forests and history of Fontainebleau, and the impressionist hotbeds of Barbizon and Moret-sur-Loing. Or instead depart in search of the homeland of Champage, Epernay , biking, cruising and tasting your way through this region of Brie and sparkling wine.
Take French cycle cruise routes to Belgium and Germany
Paris is also a fantastic departure point for bike barge tours out of France, with our Paris – Bruges tour passing through the many delights of northern France’s rolling rural countryside. You’ll then enter the French-speaking part of Belgium, also known as Wallonia, visit Somme Valley battlefields, and the gorgeous medieval city of Ghent on your way to romantic Bruges.
Or take a cross-European bike barge tour through France, Luxembourg and Germany as you follow the Moselle River Valley; stopping off to sample its wonderful Rieslings, and relaxing in towns full of half-timbered houses, before pedaling on under the watch of hilltop fortresses.

Pogacar wins Liege with epic solo break, launching bid for Giro d’Italia and Tour de France
Tadej Pogacar won the Liege-Bastogne-Liege bike race on Sunday thanks to a solo break 30km from home launched on a steep climb and sustained to the finish line.
Issued on: 21/04/2024 - 17:07
Ahead of Pogacar 's Giro d'Italia and Tour de France double bid the 25-year-old Slovenian blew the opposition away with a maverick acceleration that none could answer on the 254km race in the Ardennes forests that marks the end of the spring classics.
Billed as a duel between Pogacar and winner of Paris-Roubaix and the Tour of Flanders Mathieu van der Poel, the Dutchman came in a commendable third but was far from going shoulder-to-shoulder for the title.
Frenchman Romain Bardet was second, also solo 1min 39sec off the pace with Van der Poel leading a bunch home at 2min 02sec.
Another pre-race favourite was Briton Tom Pidcock, who was 10th on the day after a mechanical problem at a key moment hindered his day.
The win puts to bed Pogacar's fall here last season that broke his wrist and blighted his Tour de France bid.
"It was an emotional day of riding for me," a drained-looking Pogacar said.
"Not just because of my hand but also because two years ago just before the race Urska's mother died, so I was riding for her today," Pogacar said referring to his professional cyclist partner Urska Zigart.
Pogacar also won here in 2021 and this was his sixth one-day Monument win with three wins at the Tour of Lombardy and his 2023 Tour of Flanders triumph.
Champion Remco Evenepoel, former winner Primoz Roglic and Tour de France champion Jonas Vingegaard would all have been suited to this course but are injured after a mass fall at the Tour of the Basque Country.
Pogacar came into the race fresh from altitude training and at the start line said he had "no regrets about not racing la Fleche", referring to the frozen and drenched midweek race in the same region.

Texas MS 150 Bike Tour Returns To Aggieland
Texas A&M University will once again serve as the finish line for thousands of cyclists riding in the Texas MS 150 when the 40th annual charity bike tour concludes Sunday on Houston Street between Kyle Field and Aggie Park.
The two-day event benefiting people with multiple sclerosis — a condition that damages the body’s nervous system by eroding the protective coating of nerves — will run April 27-28, with a variety of routes beginning in Houston and Austin before converging in La Grange and again in College Station. Texas A&M Transportation Services is advising drivers to anticipate multiple road closures and potential delays beginning early Sunday as the riders make their way through campus.
A section of Lamar Street starting at the bell tower will be closed to drivers throughout the day, while Houston Street will remain closed from George Bush Drive to Joe Routt Boulevard. Riders will make their way down Olsen Boulevard and Old Main Drive before passing the Memorial Student Center and Kyle Field on their way to the finish line. A map of the route through campus, as well as accompanying road closure and parking information, can be found at transport.tamu.edu/ms150 .
Visitors planning to watch the participants finish are invited to park in one of the three nearby garages: Gene Stallings Boulevard Garage and University Center Garage will both charge a flat $10 entry fee, while West Campus Garage charges an hourly visitor rate. Additional parking information is available on Transportation Services’ event parking page .
The National Multiple Sclerosis Society’s Bike MS, which encompasses the Texas MS 150 and a variety of other charity rides across the country, traces its roots to 1980, when the first MS 150 was held in Minnesota. Today, it is the largest fundraising cycling series in the world. Participants in this year’s Texas MS 150 have already raised nearly $7 million to fight multiple sclerosis, with an overall fundraising goal of $9.425 million. More information about the Texas MS 150 and Bike MS is available at events.nationalmssociety.org .
