Blondie review, Glastonbury 2023: Debbie Harry whips the crowd into a frenzy with this best-of set

The glastonbury crowd is happy to lend a huge helping hand on the rare occasion harry’s voice falters, article bookmarked.

Anyone in any doubt about the precarious nature of the music industry might look no further than Debbie Harry . The frontwoman of Blondie is still singing for her supper at 77 – a reality you might put down to the bad record deals she says she struck with predatory management. “We weren’t the first band to be ripped off and we won’t be the last,” she said in 2019 .

In truth, though, Harry (née Angela Trimble) is at Glastonbury for the sheer love of the game. It’s Blondie’s third outing, after a set in 2014 and one all the way back in 1999. Their 5pm start means that they come straight after Yusuf/Cat Stevens in the 3.15pm slot, making this year a de facto Legends double-header. Blondie were founded in New York by Harry and guitarist Chris Stein in 1974 – meaning that they have close to 50 years of bangers to choose from. Today their influence can be heard in artists from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs – whose contrast of abrasive guitars and melodic vocals is particularly reminiscent of Blondie – to Lady Gaga.

Opener “One Way Or Another”, from their 1978 breakthrough album Parallel Lines , launches the crowd into a frenzy and sets the tone for this best-of set. “Hanging on the Telephone” – a song originally written by obscure musician Jack Lee and re-recorded by Blondie – has aged incredibly well, its scratchy guitars and punchy vocals giving it a proto Karen O feel.

Harry’s voice is a little thin on the upper register but holds up remarkably well, as she takes to the stage in a black headband with mirrored wraparound shades and a black sequinned jumper studded with skulls and the initials CBGB – a reference to the famous New York club that served as a crucible for the city’s punk scene. There’s no let up as “Call Me” bursts into life, Giorgio Moroder’s pulsing production rippling through the crowd.

The blistering guitar riff of “Atomic” calls to mind “The Chain” by Fleetwood Mac, and there isn’t a voice in the crowd who doesn’t sing along to this huge hit from 1979’s Eat to the Beat , as Harry’s vocals shift from svelte verse to the yelp of the chorus. The Zoomers in the crowd get a chance to bop along to “Rapture” – now a TikTok hit thanks to its kooky rap in the middle section. The song was the first US number one to feature rap vocals, and Harry’s nursery rhyme flow has a charming naivety to it for those raised on a diet of Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion. “The Tide Is High”, meanwhile, has been ruined for the millennial generation by girl group Atomic Kitten, but Harry is here to reclaim the rocksteady song originally performed by The Paragons in 1967.

  • Yusuf / Cat Stevens review, Glastonbury 2023: Legendary artist comes across as a folk Nile Rodgers
  • Sophie Ellis-Bextor review, Glastonbury 2023: Pop singer dispenses disco bangers and sequinned vibes

The sun breaks through the clouds as “Maria”, their 1999 Cardigans-like pop smash, bursts out. It’s here that Harry’s vocal shortcomings are most palpable – she can no longer hit the higher octave on the chorus – but she gets a big helping hand from the crowd.

“Heart of Glass” rolls into view as the set draws to a close. The punk band’s breakthrough hit from Parallel Lines was controversial at the time for its disco stylings, and even the band’s drummer Clem Burke initially refused to play it. All was forgiven once it became apparent it was a worldwide smash. The band breaks the song down into a little of Donna Summer’s “I Feel Love”, as Harry coos over the rippling crowd. Then it’s down to set closer “Dreaming” to coax the crowd out into the ochre evening light. “My mother told me my problem is that I still think I’m 25,” she said in 2019 . “But maybe my problem is that I don’t actually think that’s a problem.” At Glastonbury, where everyone behaves as if they’re in their twenties, she might have a point.

Heart of glastonbury: debbie harry and blondie deliver joyous greatest hits set..

Blondie at Glastonbury 2023

These are crowds like  Paul McCartney  had last year: enormous, impossible-to-penetrate and populated with parties with rugs, chairs and crates of beer who are clearly settled in for the long haul. And well they might: there are legends playing today, and in the first rank of them are  Blondie .

Debbie Harry may be 77, but in a CBGB t-shirt and avant-garde sun vizor, she is still defiantly herself. Her voice has become less elastic over time, but she remains one of the all-time magnetic fronters of bands, and today’s punchily presented set has a dizzying hit rate. Complete with rhyming - it’s good to know that Flash is still fast and cool - Rapture is present in all of its old, dangerous New York glory, while Atomic sees original drummer Clem Burke getting some typically metronomic soloing in. There’s also some recent material made after the band’s first incarnation, with a celestial Maria proving that bands can create some of their defining songs long after their first flush of success. There are also wisecracks: Debbie says they played Call Me and Hanging On The Telephone early on in order to get all the songs involving landlines out of the way. We must point out, however, to not play a song like Sunday Girl takes some nerve.

As beauteous closer Dreaming articulates, it’s the kind of feeling festivals were made for. But if you had to pick a moment it would be Heart Of Glass. Covered earlier in the day by  Toyah and Robert Fripp , Blondie’s latest version segues into the electro bass pulse of  Donna Summer ’s I Feel Love, and is that the same guitar feedback off Bowie’s “Heroes,” which was played by Robert Fripp? To finish it there’s a brief wordless blast through the Pistols’ God Save The Queen (well, Glen Matlock is on bass). What Queen? You know which one. Blondie in 2023: not fading away, still radiating.

Glastonbury 2023: Glen Matlock on playing with Blondie, solo work and “self-centred nitwit politicians”

The punk icon tells NME about returning to Glasto – and his thoughts on Arctic Monkeys, Guns N' Roses and Lil Nas X – and his dream collaborators

Debbie Harry of Blondie at Glastonbury

Former Sex Pistols guitarist Glen Matlock caught up with NME backstage at Glastonbury 2023  to tell us about returning to the festival to play with Blondie and his successful solo career.

  • READ MORE: Elton! Arctic Monkeys! Rick Astley! Glastonbury 2023’s most magical moments on Worthy Farm

After being announced last year to appear on Blondie’s new album – the follow-up to 2017’s ‘Pollinator ‘ – the punk veteran has also been playing with the art-pop icons for recent world tour commitments, performing to a huge Pyramid Stage on the closing day of Glastonbury on Sunday (June 24).

Before he took to the stage, NME asked the bass legend if he could recall the first time he met the band.

“I can’t remember exactly because I was probably really drunk and out of it, but I think I met them first when I did a for-one-night-only gig with Sid Vicious at the Electric Ballroom in ‘78 or ‘79,” he replied. “Blondie turned up as a band, and I think that’s when I met Clem [Burke] and Debbie [Harry] for the first time.

“What I thought was quite sweet about them was that when bands go on tour and have a night off, everyone tends to filter off somewhere – but they always seemed to be out and about as a band. I thought that was good.”

Matlock also revealed how their collaboration came about “just over a year ago”, when he received a phone call from drummer Clem Burke while in the middle of cooking his dinner.

Recommended

“I was in the middle of doing my risotto, it was nearly ready, then the phone rang, I had a mate round so stirred it for me,” said Matlock. “I told Clem, ‘My risotto is nearly ready and you’re spoiling it, so get on with it’.

“He said, ‘We need a bass player’, I said, ‘I thought you got one’, he said, ‘It’s not working out, can you come over?’ I thought he meant in a couple of months but he said, ‘No, next week’. I said, ‘Ah, let me think’. I did overnight and I knew I should. I’ve worked with Clem on loads of things over the years – some alright, some a bit hair-brained – but we play well together and I love Blondie’s material. They’ve got a great body of work and they always seem to push the envelope somehow, slightly. They also have good basslines.”

Asked what he could tell us about the new Blondie album, Matlock replied: “I can’t, because I’ve done the backing tracks but haven’t heard the finished thing yet. I stuck a few ideas in, but how they come out, I don’t know.”

Glen Matlock

Despite being “only ever a phone call away from going to do a session or this or that”, Matlock recently released his acclaimed seventh solo ‘ Consequences Coming ‘.

“I’m quite pleased about it, because I think that consequences have come for quite a few of our more self-centred nitwit politicians,” he said of the album’s themes. “I wrote the songs a few years back.”

He continued: “It’s not only Brexit, per se. It’s what it has led to and the enablement of it all. I can believe that so many people in this country are willing to have the wool pulled over their eyes by a right bunch of wrongun’s. I always thought that as an Englishman, one of the major pluses is that you can spot a wrongun’ from a mile off – but now I think I’m wrong. People can’t.

  • READ MORE:  Does Rock ‘N’ Roll Kill Braincells?! – Sex Pistols’ Glen Matlock

“The problem is that I think the Tories will rescind [Brexit] before the Labour Party get round to it and we’ll be stuck with the Tories again. I think it’s untenable.”

Speaking of the devastating impact that Brexit has been having on touring acts from the UK , Matlock said: “New bands are suffering, as are more established artists like me who are high up the bill with Blondie. We’re not Guns N’ Roses , although I saw them on the telly last night…”

After he exhaled heavily, NME asked Matlock what he meant – is that good or bad?

“You can just write ‘He pulled a face’,” he replied. “Nice blokes, though.”

View this post on Instagram A post shared by NME (@nmemagazine)

While the past five years seeing the UK enjoy somewhat of a punk revival led by the likes of IDLES and Shame , Matlock said that he hadn’t been particularly in tune with it – nor had he noticed too much of the Sex Pistols’ influence on modern guitar music.

“Well, everybody wears straight trousers these days,” he joked. “Before us, everyone wore flares. That’s a major plus, although flares hang on your shoes a little bit better. If you’re going to wear tight trousers you need to wear Chelsea boots really.

“I’m just being daft, but there is a truth in that. I like a bit of Arctic Monkeys . I saw a bit of them [at Glastonbury ] and I like his haircut. Who’s the guy on after us who did ‘Old Town Road’?

Lil Nas X ?

“Yeah, I like him. My son showed me a video of him. I was telling Debbie [Harry] last night that I quite fancy seeing him.”

Matlock didn’t want to speak again of his “disappointment” in recent Sex Pistol Disney biopic series Pistol , but instead look to the future with his solo work and other various projects. In that spirit, is there anyone that he has never worked with but would love to?

“I’d like to have done something with Bryan Ferry in his prime,” he said. “I wouldn’t mind doing something with Iggy again, actually. I saw him in the States and it was great. I’m looking forward to seeing him on Saturday.”

Matlock as part of Blondie will play with Iggy Pop at Dog Day Afternoon in London’s Crystal Palace Park this Saturday (July 1). Visit here for tickets and more information. They’ll also be playing shows at the Lytham Festival and Malahide Castle in Dublin this week, which you can find tickets for here .

Blondie self-confirmed for Glastonbury 2023

Share with :.

Blondie are playing Glastonbury 2023. The group's drummer Clem Burke has let slip that the Debbie Harry-fronted punk rock band are joining headliner Sir Elton John at the world-famous festival in Somerset in June. The band are already playing Crystal Palace Park on July 1, plus the Isle of Wight Festival in June. Glastonbury takes place at Worthy Farm between June 21 to June 25. He told Foxy Radio: “We’re also doing Isle of Wight and we’re doing some other festivals. “I guess it hasn’t really been announced, the full list of artists to be playing Glastonbury, but we are going to be playing Glastonbury, so maybe you got an exclusive there.” The only act confirmed so far is retiring music legend, Sir Elton John. The 75-year-old star will play the Pyramid stage on the final night of his last UK tour on Sunday, June 25. Elton - who has never played Glastonbury before - said: "I couldn’t be more excited to be headlining the Pyramid Stage. As the end of my 'Farewell Yellow Brick Road' tour comes into view, there is no more fitting way to say goodbye to my British fans. They have been beyond brilliant, and have supported me through all the highs and lows of my career. "Every week I speak to new artists on my radio show and Glastonbury is often cited as a pivotal moment in launching their careers - the festival’s genuine, enthusiastic support for the best emerging talent is something I’ve long admired. I’ve been talking to Emily Eavis about it over the last few weeks and I can’t wait to embrace the spirit of the greatest festival in the world. It’s going to be incredibly emotional.” And the 'Tiny Dancer' hitmaker is already planning to ask his celebrity pals to join him. A source told The Sun newspaper's Bizarre column: "Elton knows just about everyone in music so he’s not short of names he could ask to appear with him on stage. "Glastonbury has long been linked with some epic special guests, and Elton’s set will be one of the biggest ever. "Sir Paul McCartney was joined by Bruce Springsteen and Dave Grohl this year and Elton wants to top that, which will be no mean feat. "It’s been years in the making but now he has finally signed on the ¬dotted line. Everyone is excited to put the plans into action." Other artists rumoured to be playing this year include Arctic Monkeys and Taylor Swift. Last year's festival was headlined by Sir Paul McCartney, Billie Eilish and Kendrick Lamar.

Debbie Harry performing with Blondie on the Pyramid stage.

Blondie at Glastonbury review – Debbie Harry is an atomic charisma bomb

Pyramid stage She can’t sing like she used to – but makes up for it with a riveting performance full of untamed theatrics and awesomely aloof cool

T he chief grumble about Pyramid stage sets is about artists who aren’t perceived to have enough hits to play it (Stormzy and Billie Eilish have been the chief recent targets of this opprobrium, each with an undercurrent of prejudice). Of all the bands to play this weekend, the one least burdened by this problem has to be Blondie .

It’s easy to forget just how broad and deep their discography goes, until you’re socked again and again with hit after hit; even with 75 minutes to play with there’s no room for Union City Blue, Picture This, Sunday Girl and so many more. And aside from a couple of tepid latter day choices – the dull Doom or Destiny makes the sun-parched field suddenly feel very boggy – they show off that slate of hits with great panache.

The wellspring for that charisma is very much Debbie Harry, who emerges wearing a CBGB T-shirt and futuristic visor, as if stalking a neon-lit cyberpunk reboot of the grimy New York the band emerged from in the late 1970s.

Let us be very real for a second and admit that she really cannot sing as well as she once could, particularly in the first half of the set. She doesn’t attempt the top notes of Call Me, which really are the hinge of the song, and there’s a slightly airy, distracted feel at times to her vocals. The rap to Rapture, once semi-authentically badass, is now delivered as if she’s reading out a grocery list pinned to a fridge on the other side of the kitchen.

But once she warms up, her voice does move into those higher rooms – Denis is given its requisite girlishness as a result – and there is so much untamed cool and unpredictable brio throughout. The “uh-toh-mic” utterance of Atomic was once the last word in po-faced NYC cool – Harry yells it here like a particularly lairy nuclear scientist who’s been given a promotion. Later, out of nowhere comes a prowling cat impression, like a moment of genuine feline possession. For Hanging on the Telephone, she rants like a woman castigating a ratfink lover down the line of a public callbox.

Debbie Harry and Glen Matlock.

It’s pure theatre, and after she follows it up with Call Me – a back-to-back of songs that interrogate all the anxiety and erotic potential of the telephone – she has a very droll and disparaging sign off: “None of it is relevant today – we all have our phones in our pockets,” she says with operatic disdain. She is so riveting to watch, not least because she has one of pop’s great faces, with a smile that spears the heart with its mix of joy and faint malevolence.

With Chris Stein retired from touring but Clem Burke still on drums, the rest of the band is populated by younger musicians – the lead guitarist gives Slash the previous night a run for his money with some showboating solos, and an ostentatious keytar is played with heroically casual insouciance on Call Me. With their buzzcut sides, floppy fringes and sharp suits, they resemble a 1980s street-punk gang who have started a sideline in doing the accountancy for other 1980s street punk gangs. The exception is bassist Glen Matlock (the third ex-Sex Pistol to play this weekend after Generation Sex yesterday), whose tan and silvery mane make him look like the mafioso who’s funding the operation. There’s a nice sibling-like feel to a moment where Harry moseys over and leans against him, Matlock taking the mic for a brief holler.

A robust performance of the superb Dev Hynes co-write Long Time shows that their later tunes can match their classics, but it’s Heart of Glass that has this gigantic Pyramid crowd waving in unison – a truly awesome sight. By now Harry is dressed in a cowl made from shards of mirror, like a comic-book soothsayer stalking the mean streets of the Lower East Side. As she mellifluously sang earlier on, at age 77 she’s clearly not the kind of girl to give up just like that.

Blondie appear to have accidentally confirmed they will be performing at Glastonbury Festival this year. The rock legends, who have appeared twice previously at Worthy Farm, look set to return this summer.

So far, Sir Elton John is the only confirmed act for the legendary festival, which returns in June. But rumours are swirling about who else might appear and headline, from Guns N' Roses to Arctic Monkeys.

But Blondie look set to return to the festival they played at in 1999 and 2014 after drummer Clem Burke appeared to let slip they will be there. He told Foxy Radio: “We’re also doing Isle of Wight Festival and some other festivals… I guess the full list of artists to be playing Glastonbury hasn’t really been announced yet.

“But we are going to be playing Glastonbury, so maybe you’ve got an exclusive there.” Clem isn't the only one to have let slip that their band will be at Glasto.

Last month, Guns N' Roses bassist Duff McKagen said on a radio show that "Glastonbury is going to be iconic for us." GN'R, recently announced they will be performing at Hyde Park in London on June 30, which falls just days after Glastonbury (June 21-25).

Appearing on Three Chords & The Truth on SiriusXM radio, Duff appeared to let slip that GN'R will perform at Glasto. When discussing the band's upcoming shows, he said "Glastonbury is going to be iconic for us". He added: "We’re going to be announcing some shows, you guys, at some point, we’ll be announcing a bunch of stuff."

Other acts rumoured to headline Glastonbury, include Lizzo, Lewis Capaldi and Harry Styles. Mel C recently responded to rumours about a Spice Girls reunion at Glastonbury Festival .

Speculation has been swirling that the 90's pop group, whose current members are Mel B, Mel C, Emma Bunton and Geri Halliwell, could reunite to perform at the world-famous Somerset event.

Last year, fellow band member Mel B, AKA Scary Spice, teased that the Spice Girls could reunite for a special performance on the Pyramid Stage. Responding to a question asking if the Somerset reunion is happening, she said: "Yes, I think so! But I’ve got to convince the other four b*****s to do it with me!"

However, in a recent interview with The Guardian , Mel C, AKA Sporty Spice, seemingly put paid to the rumours for a performance at Glastonbury Festival, for this year at least. She said it "doesn’t fit with the current plan".

Glastonbury 2023: Blondie’s Clem Burke confirms band will play this year

Burke dropped the news during a recent interview about the band's summer plans..

By Nick Reilly

blondie glastonbury 2023 tour

Blondie drummer Clem Burke has seemingly confirmed that the New York icons will head to Somerset for Glastonbury Festival this summer.

While Elton John is the only performer to be officially confirmed for this year’s Worthy Farm bash, the unofficial announcement from Burke comes weeks after Guns N Roses guitarist Duff McKagan also let slip that an appearance was on the cards.

Burke seemingly let the cat out of the bag when discussing plans for upcoming UK performances, with their schedule also taking a performance at the Isle of Wight festival.

“We’re also doing Isle of Wight Festival and some other festivals… I guess the full list of artists to be playing Glastonbury hasn’t really been announced yet… but we are going to be playing Glastonbury, so maybe you’ve got an exclusive there,” he told Foxy Radio.

The New York rockers, led by the formidable Debbie Harry, are no strangers to Glastonbury either. They last performed at the iconic festival in 2014 on the Other Stage and also graced the Pyramid Stage back in 1999.

Elsewhere, Elton’s headline slot on the Sunday night of the festival (June 25) will mark the final UK show of the music icon’s last ever tour. Tickets for Glastonbury sold out within an hour of going on sale in November, a much longer time frame than usual due to a “technical problem”.

“I couldn’t be more excited to be headlining the Pyramid Stage,” John said in a statement last month. “As the end of my Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour comes into view, there is no more fitting way to say goodbye to my British fans. They have been beyond brilliant, and have supported me through all the highs and lows of my career.”

Other acts linked with a headline slot include Arctic Monkeys .

Outstanding gig. How Debbie Harry looks so cool and moves so effortlessly is incredible. Clem Burke captivated as usual - he is not only a fantastic drummer but visually stunning - in that you can’t help but just watch him! Chris Stein is as enigmatic as ever and appears to have stopped ageing. All 3 supported my musicians of quality and great talent.

The graphics behind the band were fitting and the banter Debbie has with the audience is just lovely.

Loved it. Blondie still rock!

Amazing and Fabulous. They sang newer songs in addition to big hits 'Atomic, 'Heart of Glass', 'Maria', 'One way or Another' and 'Call Me'.

You would never think Debbie is 72, she looks young for her age and her wonderful voice is pretty much the same which makes you wonder she could go still be rockin in 10 years time. They were not late on stage which shows how professional they are.

Any true Blondie fan will have a brilliant time. Best £60 quid i spent.

Simply stunning "Mustang" were supporting Blondie. The French band really got the place rocking out to their surf Blues Rock.

Odd pairing but totally worked. The music spoke in volume and made up for the language barrier.

As for Blondie, Simply amazing.

Mix of new and old songs even a cover of Beastie Boys "Fight for the Right".

Younger band members injected great live stage presence that Blondie in the 80s would have done themselves.

So Glad I saw them live. A great experience.

Glastonbury 2023, sunday live: blondie rock out on the pyramid stage after cat stevens legends slot.

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

Glastonbury Festival continues today (Sunday 25 June), with a set from a joyful Yusuf/Cat Stevens played to thousands of people gathered at the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury on Sunday (25 June), the final day of the festival.

The revered folk singer-songwriter performed with his band in the coveted Legends Slot, a gig previously handed to artists including Lionel Richie, Kylie Minogue and Dolly Parton. He also gave superfan/comedian Ricky Gervais a shout-out on his birthday, before playing his song “Tea for the Tillerman”.

Stevens performed ahead of legendary New York rock band Blondie, and what will undoubtedly be a show-stopping, emotional headliner from Sir Elton John , who will take to the same stage this evening for a farewell to live shows in the UK. Find out all the stage times for today here.

Elsewhere, Sophie Ellis Bextor delighted fans with a shimmering set of disco bangers.

Partly at the audacity of the crowd chanting “one more song”. You want one more song after THAT?! Come on guys, what do you think he was going to follow with? Honestly. But what a show, what a showman. Kate Hutchinson is reviewing Elton for us tonight, and we’ll have that with you very shortly. In the meantime, sit back, relax, and soak in the gloriousness that was Elton John’s headline show on the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury Festival.

Let’s get some more reactions in

22:52 , Roisin O'Connor

Killer song after killer song. Most of us artists can only dream of having a catalogue like this. What a SET. The legacy Elton leaves us is immeasurable. @eltonofficial #EltonJohn #Glastonbury ❤️ pic.twitter.com/bnmwIJMUhw — Beverley Knight💙 (@Beverleyknight) June 25, 2023
Elton John seems so genuinely bloody happy to be up there. And a little surprised by the magnitude of it all. Which is mental, when you consider the sheer volume of stage time he’s clocked in 50+ years. Love it ❤️ #Glastonbury #EltonJohn pic.twitter.com/9Eramym82K — Phil Clifton (@philclifton) June 25, 2023

And we have 15 minutes to go...!

22:49 , Roisin O'Connor

“I’ve had the most incredible time, and I will never forget you in my heart and in my soul,” Elton tells the audience. “Thank you so much Glastonbury.”

I rest my case

22:47 , Roisin O'Connor

This is EXACTLY what I was talking about with the Arctics set, by the way. You want FUN at a Glastonbury headline show, you want a boogie. All killer no filler. Cue Elton, and one of the greatest headline shows in festival history. — Roisin O'Connor (@Roisin_OConnor) June 25, 2023

This is categorically one of the greatest Glastonbury sets in history

22:31 , Roisin O'Connor

I can’t believe there’s only 30 minutes left of Elton’s two-hour set - it feels as though it’s only been 10 seconds?! And you know why that is, right? Because he doesn’t give you a second to feel bored, not one moment. This is a masterclass in entertainment, I hope the other Glastonbury headliners are watching carefully and taking notes.

This Hell is better... without you?

22:21 , Roisin O'Connor

A certain 1975 frontman is probably feeling mighty uncomfortable right now, given Sawayama called him out (not by name, by it was clear who she was referring to), during her set yesterday:

Rina Sawayama publicly calls out Matty Healy at Glastonbury Festival

Rina Sawayama joins Elton John for “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart"

22:20 , Roisin O'Connor

Elton John brings out Rina Sawayama, who played a belter of a set on the Woodsies stage last night, for “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart”. Elton has supported her basically since her career first began, so it’s no surprise that she should be one of his guest stars.

22:17 , Roisin O'Connor

On Sunday evening (25 June), the musician played the Pyramid stage , delighting his audience with performances of hit songs including 1973’s “Benny and the Jets” and “Your Song”.

The 76-year-old is the last of three headliners to play at Worthy Farm , Somerset this weekend. His show follows sets from Guns n’ Roses and Arctic Monkeys , who played on Saturday (24 June) and Friday (23 June), respectively.

My colleague Annabel Nugent reports:

22:14 , Roisin O'Connor

Elton John is a genius in so many ways, but it's his unwavering support for new music that gets me every time. He could have had anyone - literally anyone, this is the biggest gig of the year - but "save for one person" he's offering up his stage to young talent. Beautiful. — Roisin O'Connor (@Roisin_OConnor) June 25, 2023

The next musical guest is The Killers frontman Brandon Flowers!

22:13 , Roisin O'Connor

This is amazing, so Brandon Flowers, whom Elton met in Las Vegas back in 2005, is joining him on stage right now for “Tiny Dancer”.

Elton John’s next guest is... Stephen Sanchez!

21:59 , Roisin O'Connor

OK so “save for one person”, Elton’s musical guests are younger artists, a display of his utter dedication to new music, which is one of my favourite things about him.

So the next guess is US musician Stephen Sanchez, who delivers quite a beautiful tribute to Elton’s kindness and generosity (I teared up) before beginning a rendition of his song “Until I Found You”, one of the best singles of 2022 and, quite recently, a viral sensation on TikTok.

21:49 , Roisin O'Connor

A sublime performance from Jacob Lusk, who looked as though he was bricking it in those first few moments

21:44 , Roisin O'Connor

Dressed in his resplendent hot pink suit, Jacob Lusk did look VERY nervous as he looked out at the (100,000? more) people in the audience. I thought he might have been half a beat or so behind but he swiftly caught up, and then got into the swing of things for a tremendous gospel-backed finish.

First surprise guest revealed!

21:39 , Roisin O'Connor

And Elton’s first guest is Jacob Lusk of the band Gabriels, along with a gospel choir, here to sing “Are You Ready For Love”! What an astonishing moment for Lusk, whose band have been on the rise for the past year or so. If you needed anything to help boost your popularity, this would do it.

Let’s see what you’re all saying about Elton’s performance on Twitter

I’m working from home in Folkestone and I’m convinced I can hear the rapturous applause from here. John is on absolutely superb form: his voice has a wonderfully rich timbre to it, the keys on his piano sound bright and sharp, and the band are loving life, soaking up the adulation from the crowds.

Thunderous applause for Elton John as he greets his audience

21:14 , Roisin O'Connor

“Oh wow, I never thought I’d ever play Glastonbury. But here I am, and it’s a very emotional night for me, because it might be my last ever show in Britain... so I’d better play well,” John says, before careening into “Benny and the Jets”!!

It’s hard to think of a more perfect moment for Lil Nas X to perform his 2021 hit “SUN GOES DOWN” than right now, as the Glastonbury crowd become awash in the warm orange glow of sunset.

Ok, wow...!

19:29 , Annabel Nugent

Rocking a gold chest plate and white fringed flares, Lil Nas X looks incredible as he takes the Pyramid stage by storm – and by horse.

It’s certainly one of the biggest, most elaborate sets we’ve seen this weekend with a group of dancers, a sculptural backdrop, a giant horse and a massive bird sharing the stage with the musician.

An emotional post from Raye who absolutely smashed her set yesterday

19:07 , Roisin O'Connor

How can I ever recover, 60,000 people came to watch us at Glastonbury’s Pyramid stage, followed by our surprise set at the BBC Introducing stage which was somehow just as magical 🫀🫀🫀🫀🫀😭😭😭😭😭😭😭 #Glastonbury pic.twitter.com/SDeW03FQQC — RAYE (@raye) June 25, 2023

Any minute now...

19:02 , Annabel Nugent

Lil Nas X is due on the Pyramid Stage – and if the musician’s past shows are anything to go by, it’ll be a spectacular, show-stopping performance!

PSA: Caroline Polachek on at Woodsies at 8pm

18:50 , Annabel Nugent

If I were at Glastonbury, I’d soon be making my way over to the Woodsies Stage where Caroline Polachek is due to perform in approximately an hour.

Having seen the New York artist at Primavera a couple of weeks ago, I can confidently say Polachek will be putting on a brilliant performance, complete with stunning vocals and swoon-worthy choreography.

18:45 , Roisin O'Connor

Spice Girl Melanie C has raised hopes the famous girl band could play at Glastonbury in the future, saying they “all” would like to perform at the music festival.

The singer, 49, took to the stage on Saturday night on the Avalon Stage, and speaking to BBC Radio 6 Music’s Matt Everitt, she responded to whether the Spice Girls would accept an offer to play the legends slot.

According to BBC News, she told Everitt: “All of the Spice Girls would like to play Glasto, that is the truth.

“Like I said to the audience (on Saturday night), doing a couple of Spice Girls songs, ‘a bit of a warm-up for next year?’

“They’re rehearsed, they know the words, they’re ready.”

“So, if I can drag the other girls along... I say ‘drag’ the other girls along - all of the Spice Girls would like to play Glasto, that is the truth.

“It’s just getting it together, the timing being right.”

The pop star, also known by her nickname Sporty Spice, added: “And it’s quite daunting, some of the girls haven’t been up on stage for years.

“But I think it’s, we call it (playing Glastonbury) the bucket list, because as an artist it really is the ultimate.”

Video footage shared on Instagram shows Mel C, full name Melanie Chisholm, performing some of the band’s hits such as 2 Become 1 and Spice Up Your Life on Saturday night.

In a separate interview talking to Huw Stephens and Arielle Free, on the BBC’s iPlayer channel, Mel C said of the band doing Glastonbury: “There are certain members of the band, most of them, who would jump at the chance. We would love to do it, the thing is when we do it - do you like that?”

“I’m manifesting - when we do it, it’s got to be amazing. We’ve not been out since 2019 when we did our stadium tour.

“So we need to be out there, we need to be doing shows, we want to come to this stage being on top form.

“So, we’ve got a little bit more planning to do before we get here... you want to be brilliant and for some of the girls they’ve not been on stage since 2019 so a lot of it is psychological as well.”

In 2019, the beloved girl band of Mel B, Geri Halliwell, Mel C, and Emma Bunton, and minus Victoria Beckham, got back together for a string of tour dates across the UK and Ireland.

It was the first time the Spice Girls had performed together since the 2012 London Olympics closing ceremony.

If they were to play in the legends slot they would be following in the footsteps of this year’s performer, Yusuf/Cat Stevens, and other prolific music names like Dolly Parton, Kylie Minogue and Dame Shirley Bassey.

And on the West Holts Stage

18:39 , Annabel Nugent

Jamiacan reggae and dancehall artist Barrinton Levy is wowing the crowd over at the West Holts Stage, where Candi Station and Rudimental are due to perform later tonight.

Rami Malek loves Blondie, too

18:33 , Annabel Nugent

Kate Hudson isn’t the only celebrity Blondie fan at Glastonbury this year.

Oscar-winner Rami Malek was also spotted in the wings of Debbie Harry’s stellar performance on the Pyramid Stage.

What’s the weather looking like?

18:31 , Annabel Nugent

After a threat of rain clouds over the Pyramid Stage earlier today, it’s looking like Glastonbury is in the clear with the Met Office reporting less than a five per cent chance of rain tonight.

Becky Hill is on over at the Other stage

18:28 , Annabel Nugent

Donning an outfit emblazoned in bright yellow smiley faces, Becky Hill is certainly bringing the summer vibes to the Other Stage.

Her song “Afterglow” is proving to be a hit with the audience, who eagerly sing along with every word.

Spotted: Kate Hudson and Stella McCartney watching Blondie on the Pyramid Stage

18:15 , Roisin O'Connor

Where are we at with the Britney rumours?

17:58 , Roisin O'Connor

OK so yes, the fields at Worthy Farm are buzzing with speculation that Britney Spears could be one of Elton John’s special guests at his headline show tonight. Some are dismissing this as nonsense, but a very reliable source told me the locals around the festival site were talking about this before revellers even turned up, and they usually hear these things first.

Britney’s definitely in a British mood, too - her Instagram is suddenly full of images of apples cut into a St George’s flag shape, along with fish and chip sandwiches, and the caption GBGBGB. There is a completely unverified/unconfirmed report that she was spotted at Bristol airport yesterday, though I’m not too sure how much I believe that one.

I’m not saying I think she’s going to perform, but I do think there’s a strong chance she might pop in to say hello.

We’re loving Blondie on the Pyramid Stage!

17:50 , Roisin O'Connor

I think I’ve seen Blondie three times now, and it never gets old, so the fomo is real as I watch this Pyramid Stage set from home. Debbie Harry’s such a legend, and they know how to do a crowd-pleasing set: “Maria”, “Call Me”, “Rapture”... And she gets the crowd going!

Yusuf / Cat Stevens

17:26 , Mark Beaumont

Of recent years the Legend Slot has tended towards the camp mid-afternoon party starter – Barry Gibb, Jeff Lynne’s ELO, Diana Ross – and pop, soul and country one-namers: Kylie, Dolly, Lionel.

Anything that the stage-front security can do a synchronised routine in aid of consigning to history the phrase “guilty pleasure”. 2023, however, recalls the roots of the slot, when Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson and Brian Wilson would take a Sunday lunch pedestal as Yusef Islam - the artist previously known as Cat Stevens - emerges with a gently supportive band and an acoustic guitar set to “glistening arpeggios”.

“What a journey” he says of his path from the 1960 folk clubs to the Pyramid, then takes a skipping trip back along it. For a dedicates peacenik – his suggestion to end all war, he tells us, is to “lock all the leaders up in London Zoo” – it’s a pretty punk statement to throw “Moonshadow” away early, but he has plenty more folk gold in the vault.

An early medley takes in “The First Cut is the Deepest”; the stirring gospel “Tea For The Tillerman”, theme from Extras, floats sweetly out of the cultural subconscious; “(Remember the Days of the) Old Schoolyard” is a synthesised diversion into truly classic pop.

By the time “Wild World” and “Father and Son” – accompanied by footage of a young Cat – drift by and “Morning Has Broken” arrives like all of your assemblies come at once, it’s apparent that Yusef is so embedded within pop culture, he comes across as a folk Nile Rodgers. As lovely as a “Here Comes the Sun” tribute to George Harrison is, he’s quite enough sunshine on his own.

The Chicks review

17:23 , Adam White

Who’s ready for a hootenanny?” asks Natalie Maines, frontwoman of The Chicks, during their Sunday afternoon set on the Pyramid Stage.

The Texas three-piece (Maines is joined by sisters Martie Maguire and Emily Strayer) remain one of country’s most purely anarchic acts, celebrating the historic sounds of bluegrass and pop but also always pushing forward, tangling with politics, feminism and race (the Confederate connotations of their previous name, The Dixie Chicks, led to their decision to change it in 2020).

They’re born rebels, with the historic controversies to prove it (they were famously blacklisted by US radio for criticising President George W Bush and his invasion of Iraq, and absolutely refused to apologise despite taking a massive commercial hit).

Their set is a brilliant encapsulation of their appeal, with a mix of Nineties classics such as the uplifting “Wide Open Spaces” and modern hits like the glitchy, atmospheric “March March”.

A cover of Beyoncé’s “Daddy Lessons” massively pops off, as does a cover of Miley Cyrus and Dolly Parton’s “Rainbowland” to acknowledge Pride Month. For sheer potency, though, look no further than Maines belting out the group’s 1999 pop crossover anthem “Ready to Run” at the front of the stage with a silver-frosted mohawk.

Cat Stevens’ birthday message for Ricky Gervais

17:00 , Annabel Nugent

Cat Stevens gave comedian and TV writer Ricky Gervais a special shout out during his Glastonbury set.

The music festival continued on Sunday (25 June) at Worthy Farm, with The Chicks, Sophie Ellis-Bextor and Blondie all taking the stage before Elton John’s much-anticipated headline show.

Yusuf Islam – commonly known by his other stage name Cat Stevens – performed on the Pyramid Stage in the sunny afternoon.

The 74-year-old and his band delighted the crowd with hits including the 1967 tracks “The First Cut Is the Deepest” and “Here Comes My Baby”.

Introducing his 1970 song “Tea for the Tillerman”, Stevens shouted out one of his biggest fans, Ricky Gervais.

“Oh Glastonbury, are you enjoying yourselves?” Cat Stevens asked his audience. “You should be, it’s teatime! The only person missing right now is Ricky Gervais.”

The comedian and actor – who celebrates his birthday on Sunday (25 June) – is known to be a huge fan of Stevens.

Breaking news: Man in his 40s dies at Glastonbury after ‘medical incident'

16:32 , Roisin O'Connor

A man in his 40s has died at Glastonbury Festival after suffering a “medical incident”, police have said.

Avon and Somerset Police said in a statement: “Shortly before 4am today emergency services responded to a medical incident involving a man in his 40s at Glastonbury Festival.

“The incident happened on a footpath known as the old railway line.

“Sadly, the man died at the scene. His next of kin have been informed and our thoughts are with them at this difficult time.

“The man’s death is not being treated as suspicious and officers are carrying out inquiries on behalf of the coroner.”

Cat Stevens closes his Legends set with two classics, “Wild World” and “Father and Son"

Beautiful Beatles cover from Cat Stevens, and just what we needed. It really does feel like years since summer’s been here, but here it is!

Cat Stevens just shouted out his biggest fan, Ricky Gervais

15:56 , Roisin O'Connor

“Oh Glastonbury, are you enjoying yourselves?” Cat Stevens asks his audience. “You should be, it’s teatime! The only person missing right now is Ricky Gervais.”

In case you didn’t know, the comedian is a massive fan of Stevens’, and picked his classic song “Lilywhite” as his Desert Island Disc favourite back in 2007.

“It’s just beautiful, he said of the song.

Stevens has previously said the song was inspired by an “amazingly bad trip”.

“I was at Noel Redding’s house, we were on tour and he introduced me to this substance,” he told Mojo. “That was the worst night of my life!

“It was in his flat in Clapham Common. By the time I got to dawn and I was able to get out of the door it had snowed and it was like looking at an angelic gift from heaven! It was beautiful. Now, the song represents a recapturing of that moment where after darkness comes light.”

Gervais was likely also behind “Tea for the Tillerman” being used as the closing title track for his comedy sketch show Extras.

Moshing – to Weyes Blood?

15:43 , Annabel Nugent

When you think of Weyes Blood’s psychedlic folk, you don’t exactly think of mosh pits but anything is possible.

“I’ve heard this festival is extremely known for having the best moshes so this is your chance. This is our one extremely upbeat song...”

Weyes Blood: ‘A beguiling blend of nostalgia and optimism’

Keep ‘em coming

15:26 , Annabel Nugent

Cat Stevens is reeling through the hits! From “Here Comes My Baby” to “First Cut Is The Deepest”, this is a crowd-pleasing set if ever there was one.

“What a journey!"

15:24 , Annabel Nugent

Cat Stevens reflected on his long, storied career in between songs on stage.

The musician recalled the first ever time he walked up to a microphone at a small folk venue in Soho in 1965.

“And now walking on the great Pyramid stage of Glastonbury – what a journey!”

Now on the Pyramid Stage

15:21 , Annabel Nugent

Yusuf Islam – aka Cat Stevens – is here, and winning over the crowd with a gorgeously sung rendition of his 1971 “Moonshadow”.

Applause for Rick Astley

15:19 , Annabel Nugent

Rick Astley has just finished up a crowd-pleasing set over at the Pyramid Stage, with his 1987 hit “Never Gonna Give You Up” proving to be the ultimate antidote to this sweltering weather.

Ready for Elton!

“Absolutely massive set by The Chicks over on the Pyramid Stage just then – lovely mix of Nineties classives like ‘Wide Open Spaces’ and modern hits like the glitchy, atmospheric ‘March March’.

“A cover of Beyonce’s ‘Daddy Lessons’ massively popped off, but for me the highlight was frontwoman Natalie Maines belting out ‘Ready to Run’ at the front of the stage with a silver-frosted mohawk. I may have ascended.”
