●    If you do want to get your hair wet, remember to use and leave lots of conditioner in your hair before and after entering the lagoon. The showers are fully stocked so use as much as you need.

●     Leave your jewelry in your locker . Not only can the water damage some jewelry, but it will also be impossible to find should you drop it in the water.

●    Facilities are available for those who wish to change and shower in private .

●     Stay hydrated , especially if you plan on enjoying the saunas, and don’t forget to eat.

Really loved this! The cost is similar to booking hotels &tours yourself, but it's so helpful to have knowledgeable people book and organise things. I loved receiving our itineraries and any adjustments that needed to be made were relatively quick. My constructive feedback; I wish there had been some context on what to expect when actually waiting at the bus stops for tours; big groups of people and different buses showing up was pretty intimating the first couple times. This tour schedule is pretty intense, you leave Reykjavik before shops open and return after they close. If you take the Snaefellness option (which you should! It's really cool!) I recommend also taking an extra day break between it and your 2 day South coast to enjoy the city and not spend all week in a bus. Guide to Iceland was able to quickly send us a quote and book us an extra night and it was great. Would recommend and totally do it again!

Everything was perfect. From landing at the airport and being picked up by car rental company, every accommodation, and every tour, it was all taken care of and when I contacted customer service with questions they were quick to reply, I’ve traveled my fair share in my life but this was my first solo journey. I have to admit though, I’m not sure it’s fair to call it solo. Guid to Iceland was there every step of the way. I can’t wait to go back and see the north of the country. This tour took me through amazing sights, breathtaking landscapes and plenty of time to see the capitol as well. The accommodations, especially those guesthouses on people’s farm were amazing. This was a perfect way to manage a stopover visit with zero knowledge of iceland going in. The Blue Lagoon was closed during my visit and I was promptly refunded. There were clouds the first night so Northern lights tour was canceled, but the booking was honored the following night and we got clear skies and a stunning multi-hour aurora. I wish I had taken one more day to space things out a little more, but I felt very well taken care of throughout. A special shout out to Troll Expeditions- if I ever come back, I'd likely do all my tours with them. The other companies were very good, but Troll was top notch.

Suddenly, you come across a milky cyan blue lagoon steaming with naturally heated water, standing defiant and beautiful in the otherwise black barren landscape. Welcome to the Blue Lagoon.

Icelanders have long utilized the geothermal nature of their island for domestic and industrial use. The Blue Lagoon spa was formed in 1976, quite accidentally, around the Svartsengi geothermal power plant. The run-off water from the power plant is seawater, rich in minerals, and as the water ran through the surrounding lava field, it started to deposit silica, forming mud which effectively plugged the holes in the lava field, creating the lagoon. As the water began to collect, it acquired another of its unique attributes, a particular kind of algae that can sometimes give the water a greenish hue.

By 1981, the first Icelander had braved to bathe in it and not only deemed it pleasant but relieving for his psoriasis.

Frequently asked questions about the blue lagoon.

The Blue Lagoon is located right in between Reykjavík and the Keflavík International Airport. It takes approximately 45 minutes to get there from Reykjavík and the bus ride from Keflavík Airport takes 20 minutes.

If you booked directly through Reykjavik Excursions, either online or at a sales office, you can always change your booking. Just make sure you do it in time, so pick up information can be changed. To change your booking contact us via e-mail, [email protected] or by phoning (+354) 580 5400. Please have all the necessary information at hand, including your confirmation letter.

If you booked through another travel agency you have to make the changes through that agency and follow the terms set by them.

You can expect up to 24 hours to pass before receiving a confirmation via email.

Reykjavik Excursions offers pick up at designated bus stops, and selected hotels, guesthouses and hostels at an extra cost. Pick up starts 30 minutes before departure and passengers are requested to be ready in time at your pick up location. Passengers are responsible for being ready and visible for their pick up. If passengers miss their Reykjavik Excursions pick up they need to arrive at BSÍ Bus Terminal in time for their tour´s departure at their own cost.

Attention passengers staying in hotels and guesthouses in the restricted area in the city centre need to go to the nearest bus pick up spot. For more information on pick up locations refer to our pick up location page . The pick up is operated by smaller and bigger coaches throughout the city, dictated by accessibility.

Drop off starts after indicated arrival time. Please note that drop off locations may not be directly in front of your hotel or guesthouse dictated by actual conditions (e.g. narrow streets, coach size, roadworks, etc.). Those staying in hotels and guesthouses in the restricted area in the city centre will be dropped off at the same place they were picked up from.

Pick up and drop off for day tours operated by subcontractors may vary, please refer to each tour.

A Brief History of the Blue Lagoon

The Blue Lagoon Resort Iceland has the Svartsengi Geothermal Power Plant to thank for its development! In 1976 one of their employees named Valur Margeirsson asked if he could swim into the pool created by Svartsengi´s operations. He suffered from psoriasis and did not want to swim in a public pool. Bathing in the soothing water healed his skin when other psoriasis sufferers tried it their psoriasis also improved greatly. The Blue Lagoon Clinic is now an   internationally recognized psoriasis treatment facility!

Where is the Blue Lagoon Iceland located?

The Blue Lagoon is set in the heart of a lava landscape at Grindavík on the Reykjanes Peninsula. Approximately 49 kilometers away from the capital Reykjavík and 21 kilometers away from Keflavík International Airport, the Blue Lagoon is the perfect first stop when coming to Iceland, or last stop before taking the plane back home.

What is the best way to get to the blue lagoon?

If you don’t have a rental car, the best way to go to the Blue Lagoon is by bus. Whether you are departing from Keflavík International Airport or from the Icelandic capital Reykjavík, we offer both transportation possibilities. Enjoy the trip from Reykjavík/Keflavik and vice versa in our new and comfortable buses with free Wi-Fi.

The transfer from Reykjavík   will take about 45-60 minutes.

The transfer from Keflavik  will only take 15-20 minutes.

The transfer does not include the entrance fee of the Blue Lagoon and it is highly recommended to book it in advance as it often sells out. The journey is free for children under 12 years old and people from 12 to 17 have a 50% discount, so don’t hesitate any more and let us drive you safely to this unforgettable experience. The transfer back from the Blue Lagoon to Reykjavík/Keflavík is also included in the ticket.

When is the best time to visit Iceland’s Blue Lagoon?

Any season really, the Blue Lagoon is always warm and welcoming. The only real difference apart from the weather can be the price as it’s depending on demand. The price is lower during the off-season, this means that   summertime is the priciest time to visit.

The best time during your stay would be when you are leaving for the airport or just arriving since Keflavík International Airport is located so close to the Blue Lagoon, it’s the perfect combo. Either you’ll feel completely relaxed on the plane and ready to go to sleep or you’ll shake that jet-lagged feeling right off and get your mind and body soaked into Icelandic waters before you ultimate Icelandic adventure!

The best moments to see the Blue Lagoon with fewer people are early in the morning and late in the evening. However, the lagoon implemented a limit of visitors so that the lake is not overcrowded. Most of the guests spend around 2-3 hours in the lagoon, so it is always better not to come one hour before the closure time to make the most out of it without stressing out about the time.

Visiting the Blue Lagoon at night   is a really good idea as there will be fewer people. From September to April, it is possible to see the magnificent Northern Lights with good luck and correct weather. The Blue lagoon is far away from the city lights of Reykjavík, and less light pollution means higher chances to see the   Northern lights. What a perfect scenery to observe those natural wonders! During the summertime, the lagoon stays open later during the day so that you can enjoy the midnight sun, which is not less beautiful. Seeing the sun at midnight is something unique one can experience only in a few places around the world.

Blue lagoon Opening Hours

Even if the Blue Lagoon is open when you planned to go, booking in advance   is a must and you should consider doing so some weeks or months in advance to be sure to be able to enter the wonderful lagoon. During the summertime, the lagoon is open later because there is constant daylight, while in winter, the days are shorter. The opening hours are different from a period to another and are divided into 5 time periods during the year.

Many people are planning to visit the Blue Lagoon for the Christmas period, which makes the perfect gift for the ones you love. The opening hours are not the same during those special days. On December 24, the lagoon will be open from   08:00 am – 15:00 pm .

Blue Lagoon Prices in 2019

The prices to enter the Blue Lagoon always vary depending on availability and if you are booking late or early. If you are booking last minute, the cost will be higher. Plus, there is always the risk that it will be full-booked. This system is the ideal solution to have fewer people in the lagoon at the same time. People are more eager to pay less to enjoy the spa at a different time when there are fewer people. Usually, the price is the lowest early or late in the day and during the off-season.

There are three different kinds of ticket options for the Blue Lagoon Iceland

The Comfort Ticket includes the entrance fee to the Blue Lagoon, a Silica mud mask at the mask bar, a towel and one free drink of your choice. This is the most booked ticket and it really needs former reservations. The Premium Ticket   adds to the comfort ticket services algae mask, slippers, a bathrobe and a table reservation at the Lava Restaurant with sparkling wine.

There is a special ticket for the Retreat Spa from 79 000 ISK for 4 hours into this wonderful VIP spa. It includes private changing rooms, access to the Blue Lagoon and skincare services such as The Blue Lagoon Ritual (a spacious sanctuary of three interconnected chambers where you can cover your body with the treasures of geothermal seawater). But the most amazing thing about this ticket is the Retreat Lagoon which is a private part of the lagoon.

What can you do at the Blue Lagoon?

The Blue Lagoon is not just a pool, the Blue Lagoon is more like a spa. You can get an upgrade from the standard ticket and get a robe and slippers. The famous silica mud mask will make your skin feel amazing. You can order a massage, in the water, so it feels like you are floating in thin air and there is both a sauna and a steam bath. The Blue Lagoon is a wondrous place with an excellent award-winning restaurant called Lava and a great caféteria for those looking to save a buck!

There is an inbuilt water bar in the water so you won’t even have to get out to get a drink and it’s all just charged to the bracelet that you get upon entrance that is actually also your locker key, so convenient!

There is a relaxing area   for those who look to catch a break from the warmth, quite popular for those looking to fix a hangover or are feeling jet-lagged. They have an amazing shop with souvenir and all the Blue lagoon products along with Icelandic design clothing and jewelry. Really, you can spend all day at the Blue lagoon and not a moment will feel wasted.

Blue Lagoon Iceland Hotels

The Blue Lagoon geothermal spa in Iceland has two hotels of its own: The Silica Hotel and the Retreat Hotel.

The Silica Hotel

Prices are from 70,400 ISK (565 USD) per night, is set in the heart of a lava field. In the middle of this volcanic landscape, the hotel is just ten-minute walk from the Blue Lagoon. In addition to being comfortable and relaxing, the Silica hotel offers its own private bathing lagoon, available for hotel guests every day from 09:00 – 22:00. The hotel won various design awards as it is in perfect harmony with its environment. Silica Hotel has 35 spacious rooms with private facilities and a veranda with a view on the surrounding lava field.

The Retreat Hotel

Prices are from 162,000 ISK (1,300 USD) per night, is a brand new hotel which opened in April 2018. This is the best of luxury hotels, with amazing amenities and services such as a subterranean spa, a geothermal lagoon around the hotel, a restaurant, and 62 suites. Each guest has an individual host who will serve as a guide and attendant. The host can book tours, manage itineraries or also inform about the arrival of the northern lights. The guests can enjoy unlimited access to all the services of the Blue Lagoon, morning yoga, guided hikes, and a golf course. The suites have a minimalist design, there are moss, lava, and lagoon suites. The latter offers direct access to the lagoon. The most amazing thing about this hotel is that everyone has access to the Retreat Spa with a lot of relaxing services.

There are also some cheaper hotels near the Blue Lagoon, for example in the closest city of Grindavik. There, you will find a lot of accommodation opportunities such as hotels, guesthouses, cabins, Airbnb or cottages. There are also convenient inns right by the airport.

Good to know before you go

• Unlike many people think, the Blue Lagoon is not inside Reykjavík but in the middle of an 800-year old lava field called  Illahraun  (“Evil Lava”)
• Showering naked is mandatory before entering the lagoon, for cleanliness reasons.
• It is better to  condition your hair  beforehand as the minerals in the water will make your hair a bit weird and dry.
• The entrance is free of charge for children between 2 and 13 years old.
• You won’t need your wallet inside the lagoon. Each visitor is given a wristband   for the lockers and also to be able to pay for everything. You will have to pay the total bill only when you leave.
• The Blue Lagoon is one of the 25 wonders of the world.
• The smell of the geothermal lagoon is special. Just like in other geothermal areas, the sulfur scent will certainly surprise most of the guests. The smell can remind you of rotten eggs, but you get used to it quickly.
• Some shampoo, body gel and conditioner are available in the showers.
• It is not allowed to eat a packed lunch inside the lagoon.
• You can store your luggage by the parking lot for 550 ISK (5 USD) per bag.
• If you wear contact lenses, take it off before entering the lagoon. If the silica goes into your eyes it will be really painful for those wearing contact lenses.
• Don’t wear any jewelry because the minerals in the water can damage it.

How to Visit Blue Lagoon in Iceland on a Cruise

What is the blue lagoon.

The Blue Lagoon is a series of geothermal pools that were created in the 1970’s. While the lava landscape itself is natural, the water actually comes from the runoff of a nearby power plant. The creation of the pools occurs as part of the process of creating electricity and renews itself every 48 hours. Don’t worry, it is perfectly safe to soak in this geothermal spa. The water contains no added chemicals, just naturally occurring materials that can do wonders for your skin. The milky coloration of the water is a combination of algae, silica, and minerals that are thought to have medicinal powers.

How Hot is the Water in the Blue Lagoon?

The water is heated by natural geothermal processes occurring underground. While temperatures underground can reach 300 degrees Fahrenheit, the average temperature in the pools is approximately 102 degrees Fahrenheit. For most people, the warm water will feel soothing and relaxing. As a reference point, most whirlpool hot tubs are kept at a temperature between 100 to 104 degrees.

Who Can Visit the Blue Lagoon?

Families with children two years or older are welcome at the Blue Lagoon. Children under the age of 13 are allowed in free of charge along with an accompanying adult admission. Each member of a party over the age of 13 will be required to have a ticket to gain admission to the spa. Even those who can’t swim are welcomed at the Blue Lagoon. The deepest portion of the water is about 4.5 feet and there are lifeguards on duty at all times.

How Much is the Admission to the Spa?

There are two different packages from which you can choose when visiting the Blue Lagoon. Most tours and cruise line excursions come with the Comfort Package (between $62-$89 USD) which includes a locker, a towel, mud mask, one drink, and entrance to the facilities. You can upgrade to the Premium Package ($89-$116 USD) which includes a bathrobe and slippers, an algae mask, and some perks at the onsite restaurant in addition to the offerings of the Comfort Package. In-water massages are also available for an additional cost.

If you want to splurge, you can purchase one of the limited Retreat Spa packages. This exclusive package gives you private access to a reserved area of the Blue Lagoon. This also comes with access to the Retreat Spa, additional skin care products, a private changing room, and other benefits. This upgraded package is not cheap, costing between $500 to $650 a person.

How Do I Get Tickets to the Blue Lagoon?

You will need to reserve tickets for Blue Lagoon in advance. If you purchase a cruise excursion, the ticket will most likely be included in your package. If you plan to go there on your own, you will want to buy tickets online. Ticket prices fluctuate depending on the day of the week and the time you plan to visit, with peak times and weekends having the highest prices.

When booking your ticket, you are requested to select an arrival time. The Blue Lagoon website clearly states “ If you don’t arrive at the pre-booked date and time, Blue Lagoon cannot guarantee availability .”

How Do I Get to the Blue Lagoon?

The ride from the cruise terminal ( Skarfabakki Harbour) is about 51 Kilometers away which has a travel time of about 45 minutes.  Most cruise lines offer an excursion to this popular attraction which includes round-trip transportation and a ticket for the Comfort Package.

The Blue Lagoon website also offers transportation from several locations in the city, including the cruise terminal, for $50 a person. When working out the total costs, there is not much savings based on which mode of transportation you choose. The one benefit of booking directly with Blue Lagoon is the ability to pick a preferred departure time from the cruise port, whereas cruise excursions will usually leave at only one set time.

One word of caution is don’t miss the bus. While there are taxis in the area, they will cost you. The trip back to the cruise port will probably run you between $125-$150+ USD.

What Else Do I Need to Know Before Visiting Blue Lagoon?

When visiting the Blue Lagoon, you will be given a wrist band that will serve as your “wallet” while in the spa. This wrist band will also be used to access a locker in the changing facilities. Yes, you do need to shower before entering the water; however, even though Icelanders are accustomed to changing and showering in public, you will have access to private showers and changing stalls if desired.

You should also remember to remove jewelry as the minerals could discolor the metals. Women will also want to tie their hair up or apply plenty of conditioner before entering the lagoon. Cameras and phones are permitted, but a waterproof option is definitely recommended. We used our iPhone with a Lifeproof case to ensure no water damage.

Should I Visit the Blue Lagoon in Iceland on Cruise?

Yes, the trip to the Blue Lagoon was a fun and memorable excursion that we both enjoyed. Given our time in port, we were able to see some of the Downtown area during the day prior to visiting the Blue Lagoon and visited the Golden Circle on our second day in the city. Having a relaxing evening with a drink in hand (yes, there is even a swim up bar) in a thermal hot spring is something you don’t get to do every day!

Our four hour tour was just enough time as it gave us about 2 hours at the Blue Lagoon. This equated to about 90 minutes in the water. If you’d prefer to spend more time in the geothermal spa or exploring the grounds, you should plan the trip accordingly.

Fjaðrárgljúfur (Feather River Canyon) is a surreal sight – a marvelous sheer-walled river canyon covered in blankets of velvet-green moss.

Bird Watching

Everyone wants to see Iceland’s famous puffins when they visit in the summer months (late May until mid-August) . Iceland is also home to countless more species of birds, some of which stay all year round.

On our South Coast and Ring Road tours, you’ll also have a chance to see Arctic terns, kittiwakes, guillemots, and razorbills. Lake Mývatn in North Iceland attracts thousands of ducks each summer, making it a bird watcher’s paradise! Look out for the Barrow’s Goldeneye, Harlequin ducks, gyrfalcons, gannets, and ptarmigans! Iceland’s fierce volcanic activity fuels gushing geysers all around the country, and the most famous hot spring is Geysir , one of the highlights of our Golden Circle tours . Geysir was the first erupting hot spring discovered by Europeans, and its name is the Icelandic word for “gush”, giving its name to all hot springs worldwide. Geysir is quiet these days, but Strokkur sends hot water and vapor high into the sky every few minutes! You won’t have to wait long to see it blow sky-high. Traditional Icelandic architecture is characterized by its simplicity, functionality, and integration with the natural environment. During our tours you will be able to see couple of its examples. 

Eiriksstadir is a reconstructed Viking-era longhouse in Iceland, which provides a glimpse into the architectural style of the early settlers. Hlíðartúnshúsin (located in Borgarnes) is a collection of several turf houses that were first built more than a hundred years ago. You’ll see a sheep barn, a cowshed, and even a hut used to store potatoes!

Iceland is also famous for turf-roofed churches, such as the iconic Viðimýrarkirkja and Hofskirkja, showcasing the continuation of this architectural tradition into religious buildings.

Enjoy an evening and overnight stay in the capital of the North

Akureyri is the unofficial “second city” of Iceland, located in the far north about six hours from Reykjavik, nestling at the end of the longest fjord in the country.

Once a little 17 th -century fishing village and trading station, Akureyri is now a bustling town. You’ll find funky cafés, restaurants, art galleries, design stores and a botanical garden to explore.

Even though it’s very close to the Arctic Circle, the 20,000 people who call Akureyri their home enjoy some of the country’s warmest and most stable weather.

As you walk the streets of Akureyri, make sure you take a look at the traffic lights. All the red lights are heart-shaped!

Sólheimajökull Glacier & Lagoon

Sólheimajökull is a magnificent glacier located on the South Coast of Iceland. It is an outlet glacier that descends from the larger Mýrdalsjökull ice cap. Sólheimajökull is famous for its breathtaking ice formations, including deep crevasses, ice caves, and dramatic ice ridges. 

The glacial environment of Sólheimajökull provides a unique opportunity to witness the effects of climate change, as the glacier has been receding in recent years. This caused new Glacial Lagoon to appear on the map of Iceland, where huge chunks of ice slowly float on its surface.

Húsafell Canyon Baths

This is a spellbinding place that has to be seen to be believed, with three geothermally-heated pools of varying temperatures (30-41°C or 86-105°F), a cold-water pot and a cooling waterfall, all designed to blend seamlessly into the natural environment. 

These are traditional and authentic Icelandic bathing pools , inspired by the age-old ways used by the locals in this area for a thousand years. Sustainably built in the traditional stone-bath style in an off-grid location, it’s a unique combination.

Gljúfrabúi is a hidden gem located in Iceland, near the popular tourist attraction, Seljalandsfoss waterfall.

It is often referred to as the “Secret Waterfall” or “Cave Watefall” due to its concealed location and the fact, that is very often missed by many ! To reach Gljúfrabúi, you´ll need to walk through a narrow opening in the rock and wade through ankle-deep water in a small canyon. Inside, you will be greeted by a magnificent waterfall cascading down from a steep cliff. Remember to wear solid shoes and take your raincoat with!

Diamond Beach

Diamond Beach, also known as Jökulsárlón Beach, is a mesmerizing natural wonder located in Iceland. It is situated near the Jökulsárlón glacial lagoon, where icebergs from the nearby Breiðamerkurjökull glacier float into the Atlantic Ocean.

Arnastapi is a small village located on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula in Iceland. It is known for its stunning coastal scenery, with cliffs, gorges, and rock formations.

The village offers a peaceful and tranquil atmosphere, making it a popular destination for nature lovers and hikers. One of the main attractions in Arnarstapi is the famous Gatklettur, a natural arch rock formation that stands tall against the crashing waves of the Atlantic Ocean. There, you can also take a walk on the Lava Bridge and pose for a unique picture.

Enjoy an evening and overnight stay in the capital of the West

Borgarnes bubbles with life, packed into a picturesque promontory overlooking the broad waters of Borgarfjörður, the “City Fjord”.

It’s one of the busiest towns in West Iceland, a focal point for fishing, culture and commerce for a thousand years. But you can still feel its Viking roots wherever you look!

You’ll discover that it has a cheerful small-town vibe that makes it a delight to explore. So take a walk around its pretty streets and rocky shoreline, and enjoy the stunning views across the fjord to Hafnarfjall!

We usually arrive there around 5-6 pm, crossing the fjord over the second-longest bridge in Iceland, with stunning views to enjoy on both sides of the waters.

Enjoy an afternoon and overnight stay in the charming, geothermal village

Hveragerði catches your attention with steam vents billowing vapor into the air everywhere you look. You’ll be amazed by the endless rows of geothermally-heated greenhouses, where bananas and other fruits are grown all year round!

The town is surrounded by moss-covered lava fields and towering volcanic mountains. The Mid-Atlantic Ridge runs through this area, so there are frequent earthquakes. That means new hot springs are constantly opening up in this highly active area, even in people’s homes and gardens! 

If you’re looking for a bite to eat, there’s a wide selection of bars and restaurants. Some even use geothermal power for carbon-neutral cooking! Make sure you try the tomato soup while you’re here!

Have the ultimate thrill in Iceland by experiencing the  first & only Glacier Zip Line in the world!  Soar across the glacier and over a vertical ice cave (called a Moulin ) taking in panoramic views of the vast blue and white expanse below. Feel the wind rush through your hair as you glide above the frozen landscape, taking in the natural beauty of Iceland from a whole new perspective. Along with the zip line, you will also get to experience our famous  Crystal Ice Cave , Iceland’s biggest and most blue naturally formed glacier cave. 

This Glacier Zip Line + Ice Cave tour is the perfect combination of adventure and natural wonder, giving you the chance to experience Iceland’s unique landscapes in a whole new way. Don’t miss out on this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to explore the beauty of the ice caves while getting your heart racing on the one and only glacier zip line!

´No-fly´ Zip Line tickets are for guests who wish to participate in the full tour experience, except go on the Zip Line. ´No-fly´ tickets will have the opportunity to watch their family, loved ones and friends on the Zip Line. They will not have the opportunity to leave the tour early and must stay with the guide. 

Optional: Pickup/Drop-off out of Reykjavik for this Glacier Zip Line + Ice Cave Tour is available for an additional 175,000 ISK per group (max 6 pax). Pickup time would be at 6:30am from your accommodation and the duration of the tour would change to approx. 16 hours. This option will be visible once you click ‘continue’ at the checkout.

Meeting with your Guide

You will meet your guide at the Glacier Lagoon parking lot in Vatnajokull National  Park. The official address for this location is:  í Hornafirði, Jökulsárlón, Glacier Lagoon, 781 Höfn  or you can simply type in ‘Ice Pic Journeys’ in Google Maps and we will come up.  It is important to be aware that this is a 5-hour drive from Reykjavik so it is always recommended to stay at an accommodation closer to this meeting point.

It is best to arrive 15 minutes before your scheduled tour so you can use the restrooms since there will be none at the glacier. Your guide will be right across from the restrooms in the bus parking lot. You can look for the ‘Ice Pic Journeys’ logo on our 4×4 vehicle amongst the other companies. 

Drive in 4×4 to Vatnajokull Glacier

From the Glacier Lagoon parking lot, you will hop aboard one of our 4×4 vehicles and head towards the glacier. About 10 minutes into your journey, you will turn off onto an F-Road and make the bumpy journey toward the glacier. From the road to the glacier parking lot, this will take roughly 20-30 minutes to reach. As you drive, your guide will teach you the history of the surrounding area as you enjoy a scenic ride through an ancient glacier plain.

Optional Add-On: Pickup/Drop-off out of Reykjavik is available for an additional 175,000 ISK per group (max 6 people). Adding this on will make your transport to/from the tour private but not the tour itself. Pickup time would be 7 am from your accommodation and the duration of the tour would change to approx. 15 hours. When this option is available it will be visible once you click ‘continue’ at the checkout.

Hike to the Ice Cave

Once you arrive at the glacier parking lot, your guide will begin handing out your gear for the tour. This includes crampons, an ice axe, a harness, a helmet with a headlamp, and hiking boots if you rented them. Once everyone has their gear, you will take a 30-minute hike to the edge of the glacier. The hike is relatively easy for most and will have you walking on flat, yet slightly rocky ground the entire way. We will always go at the pace of our guests so you can take your time and enjoy the walk as your guide leads the way.

Arriving at the Iceland Crystal Ice Cave

Upon arriving at the edge of the glacier, you will be greeted with a massive cavern in front of you with a river running underneath it. You have finally reached our Crystal Ice Cave! Also regarded as the Sapphire Ice Cave, this cave varies each year in its shape, location, and size. This is because the cave is always melting away and reforming naturally during the summertime. That is why you will always get a unique experience when going into it because it will never be the same as it was on that day.

Before entering the cave, your guide will help you put on your crampons. After your guide instructs you on how to put them on, your guide will go over a safety briefing about walking on the glacier and exploring the cave. It’s important to understand and follow these rules and to ask any questions that you may have before stepping foot on the ice. 

Exploring the Crystal Ice Cave

Entering the ice cave will be an unreal and otherworldly experience for most people. Your eyes will slowly adjust to the crystal blue walls of the cave and showcase its hidden beauty. As your guide leads you deeper into the ice cave, they will take their camera and photograph you in the best locations and angles. Having explored and photographed these caves hundreds of times, they will have the best insight at getting you amazing photos while you relax and enjoy the cave without worry.

As you are enjoying the ice cave, your guide will teach you about its formation and composition. You will spend roughly an hour inside the cave, exploring all of the different areas. Normally, these caves will have multiple chambers that you will be able to explore as you go deeper into the cave, however, this can vary from year to year. After everyone is happy with their photos and experience inside the cave, we will exit and make our way onto the glacier.

Glacier Hike to the Zip Line

Next, you will put your crampons into the ice and make your way onto Breiðamerkurjökull Glacier. Hiking on the ice is definitely a unique feeling and may take some getting used to but by the end of the tour, you won’t want to take your crampons off! As you hear the crunch below you, you will march forward and follow your guide up the glacier toward the direction of the moulin where you will jump on the zip line. Throughout this, your guide will show you different formations on the glacier known as moulins or deep glacial holes. The Glacier Zip Line

After making your epic jumps on the zip line, you will head back up the slope and off the glacier knowing that you are one of the few that got to experience something so special here in Iceland. 

Return to the Glacier Lagoon

You will finish the tour with a hike back to the glacier parking lot and a 30-minute drive back to the Glacier Lagoon where you will say goodbye to your guide and have memories of an amazing day inside of Vatnajokull National Park.

GOOD TO KNOW

– Ice caves are a dynamic ever-changing natural phenomenon. Each year, old ice caves melt and new ice caves appear.   Photos that you see of the cave at any given time on our website or any social media will not necessarily mean that is what you will necessarily experience on your tour.  This makes each experience unique and special for our guests. 

– This Glacier Zip Line + Ice Cave tour involves roughly 10km of total hiking. The first half of the terrain is very flat yet rocky and is relatively easy for a person of average fitness. The second half is hiking on the glacier which goes up a gradual incline for about 20 minutes. The overall hike is rated as easy with some areas of moderate exercise.

-Please note the tour can take approximately 6-7 hours depending on weather conditions, the speed of the group and other daily factors.  -If weather conditions for the the Zip Line become unsafe during your tour then your guide we alter your tour to a Glacier Hike and Ice Cave or Ice Cave tour if conditions allow it to maximise your experience.

– Photo packages may sometimes take more or less than 14 days to edit. This is just our average turnaround time.

– IPJ Editor selects and edits the photo package based on what we feel are the best shots from the day. If additional photos are available outside of the package count they may be available for 1,000 ISK per but not guaranteed.

– Also be aware that if there is a request to have specific photos from the day, advance notice via email is required before the editing process begins.

– ´No-fly´ Zip Line tickets are for guests who wish to participate in the full tour experience, except go on the Zip Line. ´No-fly´ tickets will have the opportunity to watch their family, loved ones and friends on the Zip Line. They will not have the opportunity to leave the tour early and must stay with the guide.

What is the Blue Lagoon?

The Blue Lagoon is a geothermal spa located in the heart of the Reykjanes UNESCO Global Geopark, which is home to many geological wonders. The Blue Lagoon is fed by seawater 6,500 feet (1,981 m) below the surface, where it reaches a scorching 464⁰F (240⁰C). On its way to the surface, the seawater captures silica and other minerals before emerging from the ground at a balmy 100⁰F (38⁰C), the perfect temperature for a relaxing soak. In 2012, the Blue Lagoon was named a wonder of the world by National Geographic. Not only is the Blue Lagoon revered for its otherworldly beauty, but it’s also renowned for the restorative powers of its water. The geothermal seawater is rich in silica, algae, and minerals—elements known for their healing properties for the mind, body, and skin. How do you get to the Blue Lagoon from Reykjavik?

The Crystal Blue Ice Cave Adventure is an adventurous trip, off the beaten path, on which you experience the forces of Icelandic nature. We depart from the Glacier Lagoon every day at 9:30 and 14.00, driving off-road to Iceland’s largest glacier, Vatnajökull. During the scenic drive in our special super jeeps, we will see the best of the amazing glacial terrain .

When we get to the ice cave, we will provide you with the right equipment, and guide you as we enter this magical blue world . Our guides are very professional , experienced, and know ice caves inside out – You are in safe hands.

After approximately an hour of exploring the caves, we head back to Jökulsárlón.

Jeans are not recommended for ice cave tours. Denim absorbs moisture easily and takes a long time to dry, so take care to choose fabrics that will keep you warm and comfortable throughout the day.
