The bluegills were a species of neural parasite that infiltrated Starfleet in 2364 . Their plans were foiled by Captain Jean-Luc Picard and Commander William Riker of the USS Enterprise -D .

All the known parasites perished when the "mother" creature inside Commander Dexter Remmick was destroyed. However, by that time, a subspace message had been sent in the direction of the Delta Quadrant , a homing beacon that Lt. Commander Data believed would eventually lead more parasties to Federation space. ( TNG : " Conspiracy ")

Appendices [ ]

Background [ ].

  • According to the Star Trek Chronology and other production sources, the parasite plot was supposed to lead to the introduction of the Borg , originally conceived as an insectoid species rather than cybernetic in nature. Negative reaction to "Conspiracy" and the subsequent WGA strike ultimately changed these plans.
  • Pocket Books ' post-finale Deep Space Nine novels featured the return of the parasites, as a mutated off-shoot of the Trill symbionts . Star Trek Online had a different take, and featured them as a nemesis in the Delta Rising expansion, having "joined" with the Vaadwaur . In that timeline, they were revealed to be a species bio-engineered by the Solanae at the behest of the Iconians . Star Trek: Pendragon does not follow either of these interpretations, though certain aspects of either might be incorporated as the series progresses.
  • Most significantly, the audio drama Starship Excalibur uses the bluegills as a major antagonist, portraying them as an extra-galactic menace known to some as the Zero .
  • The bluegills also make an appearance in the Star Trek: Hidden Frontier universe, where they are used by the Grey , similar to their relationship with the Solanae in Star Trek Online , though preceding the video game by several years.

History [ ]

Star trek: lambda paz [ ].

One of the bluegills had infiltrated Teero Anaydis in 2374 . This allowed him to communicate telepathically with the Spawn Mother. Presumably, the bluegills were using The Circle as a cover for their own activities suggesting they had overcome the weakness of not knowing about their hosts' pasts. Presumably, this was achieved by temporarily relinquishing control of their host bodies. (" Divided Loyalties ", " Faces in the Crowd ")

The bluegills had the ability to cause the deaths of their hosts when they felt the hosts were in danger of capture. This was the case when co-conspirators of Teero were captured by teams from Deep Space 9 and the USS Lambda Paz . Preliminary autopsies were inconclusive. The parasite that inhabited Lambda Paz engineering technician Saul Mavik caused its host's death after fleeing the reactor room of Starbase G-6 to allow Kelsen Daron to carry out his mission: to destroy the starbase and all surrounding ships. Upon vacating its host, this parasite was incapacitated and taken aboard the Lambda Paz for further study.

Bek Gillen served as a host for one of the bluegills. His editorial program was an apparent method for the Spawn Mother to carry out her plans for Bajor . After the near destruction of Starbase G-6, Bek attempted to disassociate himself from the perpetrators, one of whom was inspired by Bek's warnings, by urging his viewers not to resort to causing such destructive methods in rise up against what he perceived as Federation oppression. (" Faces in the Crowd ")

The Ethereals used these neural parasites as a means of recruiting new soldiers into the Grey Confederacy . (" Entanglement, Part 2 ")

Parasite

A soldier parasite

Soldier parasites , also known as Takers of Gist , were a type of bluegill parasite , the lowest caste which did the bidding of queen parasites and spawnmothers .

Soldiers were either spawned directly from a spawnmother or were amongst the fifty or so children of a queen parasite . They could be controlled or instructed via telepathic or short range pheromonal communications with their queens and spawnmothers and did their leaders bidding. ( DS9 novel : Unity )

Dexter Remmick

  • View history

Lieutenant Commander Dexter Remmick was a Human male Starfleet officer in the 24th century .

In 2364 , he was part of the Inspector General 's office, when he beamed aboard the USS Enterprise -D with Admiral Gregory Quinn to conduct a thorough investigation of the vessel . The nature of the investigation was kept secret, and this uncertainty drove tensions very high on the ship. Remmick questioned the Enterprise -D senior staff at length, asking them about the apparent unfitness of Captain Jean-Luc Picard for command. Despite the crew's strong objections, he seemed to be intent on finding problems with Picard and his command. His final report, however, was one of praise, claiming nothing was wrong with the Enterprise -D. Furthermore, despite his seemingly stiff demeanor, he could be seen quietly cheering in praise after Picard successfully guided Jake Kurland away from a catastrophic death .

After delivering his report to Admiral Quinn, Remmick said he would like to serve aboard the Enterprise -D after the completion of his tour of duty at the Inspector General's office. ( TNG : " Coming of Age ")

Remmick aftermath

The end of Dexter Remmick

A few months later, when the Enterprise -D returned to Earth , Remmick was an officer at Starfleet Command . He had apparently been transferred there by alien infiltrators, who had compromised the Federation . It was determined that Remmick's body was host to the parasitic being mother creature, and he was eventually killed by Captain Picard and his first officer William T. Riker when two direct phaser blasts, set on full power, blew off Remmick's head and the front half of his torso. By destroying the mother creature, they killed all the other parasites as well. Shortly before Remmick's death , the mother creature was able to send out a homing beacon that was presumably intended to draw other members of the species to Earth. ( TNG : " Conspiracy ")

An image of Remmick was part of Lieutenant Commander Data 's psychotronic stability examination in 2365 . ( TNG : " The Schizoid Man ")

Remmick was part of Commander Riker's memories while being infected on the surface of Surata IV and treated in sickbay . ( TNG : " Shades of Gray ")

Bluegill2

The parasite lodged on the host's spine.

BluegillMotherCreature

A mother parasite emerging from its host's abdomen.

Bluegills is an unofficial designation given to a race of sapient parasitic life forms which operate in a hive-like society, obeying commands from a hive-mother.

Each individual parasite infects a live humanoid host and controls it from the cervical spine. They are so named for having a blueish gill which protrudes from the back of the host's neck through its skin, allowing the parasite to breathe.

  • 1.1 Effects on the host
  • 3 Appearances

Biology [ ]

These creatures seem to originate from an unexplored sector of the galaxy. Regular individuals are lilac in color and approximately mouse-sized. They have three pairs of short legs and a pair of disproportionately large pincer mandibles. As stated above, they also have a tube-like gill which emerges from the host's neck.

The mother creature, in contrast, is much larger and more worm-like in appearance. Due to her size she resides in the host's abdominal cavity rather than neck, and appears to give birth to numerous fully-formed individuals which also remain within the mother's host until a suitable humanoid is found for each of them to inhabit. If a host is killed, the parasite leaves the body from the host's mouth and scurries in the general direction of where the mother's host is, as they can always return to it.

Effects on the host [ ]

Hosts infected with Bluegills are completely under the parasite's control, although they usually try to behave like the host's normal self to avoid suspicion. The Bluegills have the ability to enhance the host's physical strength and resilience to great levels, to the point that an infected Human can easily subdue a Klingon , and phasers need to be set on "kill" in order to incapacitate them. Interestingly, the host's physiology doesn't seem to matter much to the Bluegill, as they have been shown to infect both Humans and Vulcans , even though the former's blood is iron-based and the latter's is copper-based.

Additionally, people infected by the parasite have demonstrated the habit of feeding on live insect larvae, suggesting this might be some kind of nutritional requirement. Alternatively, however, it could be just a cultural habit, as the Bluegill are an intelligent race, they ought to have their own customs.

It's not entirely clear how much information from the host's brain the parasite has access to, but it seems that they don't retain clear memories, as infected people can be spotted by asking personal questions about them. While the infected Savar did attempt to use a Vulcan nerve pinch on Riker, he failed to incapacitate him fully, suggesting that the parasite did know that the technique existed, but was unable to put this knowledge to practice.

History [ ]

In 2364, members of this species started to infiltrate the United Federation of Planets, infecting high-ranking members of Starfleet Command in an attempt to take control over the Federation. The invasion was stopped after the mother creature was killed by Jean-Luc Picard and William T. Riker.
