Airlines and Travel Agencies That Accept Bitcoin for Payment

Richard Kerr

Bitcoin , Ethereum, Ripple and a host of other virtual currencies have become mainstream weekly news and even infiltrated family conversations and bar talk. Due to the unprecedented rise in value of cryptocurrencies over the last year, they continue to gain traction as a payment option in lieu of cash or credit cards.

As early as 2013, airlines and online travel agencies began accepting Bitcoin as a payment method. Valuations back then were roughly $900 per BTC (Bitcoin) and with values in the last few months ranging between $13,000-$20,000 per BTC, the swing toward cryptocurrency as a payment option appears to only be in the beginning stages. Let's look at the airlines and online travel agencies that are currently accepting Bitcoin and similar currnecies for payment.

Price Arbitrage

When I started thinking about paying for air travel with cryptocurrency, one of my first questions was how a carrier could combine two very complicated and very dynamic pricing models. Airline ticket prices change from minute to minute, and cryptocurrency can have significant gains and losses over the course of a few minutes (or seconds). In a five-minute transaction, based on what the crypto market is doing, you could significantly under- or over-pay for a ticket. How would an airline know how much crypto to charge at any given second?

While I'm not a crypto expert, I have the basic understanding of the exchanges and marketplaces in existence, and it looks like many airlines and agencies have partnered with these exchanges to accept payment at the exact market value at the time of transaction. Expedia, for example, processes all payments through Coinbase , perhaps the most popular crypto trading platform in the US right now. There's a clause for over or under payment , allowing Expedia to hold your booking until it receives the correct amount based on market conditions:

If you attempt to initiate a payment of Bitcoins different from the exact cost of the booking indicated by Coinbase, your booking will not complete. You will be required to re-submit payment for the correct amount in order to complete the booking. After a failed payment, the Bitcoin exchange rate may update or you may be required to restart the booking process.

It seems the payment platforms also have countdown timers for you to complete the transaction, so you wouldn't be able to get to final payment screen and wait for the market to fluctuate until you're at the point to save a few dollars.

Why Pay With Crypto?

This was the larger question I had from a consumer standpoint. Crypto currently has all the potential to increase in value in a short amount of time, unlike the cash in your wallet or bank account. The tenth of a Bitcoin I could use to pay for an economy ticket to Europe may cover the $1,300 airfare now (assuming a BTC price of ~ $13,000), but in a year it may be worth significantly more.

Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies obviously don't have any of the built-in trip and delayed/lost baggage protection of premium credit cards, nor do you earn points when paying in crypto. While there are unsavory characters in the world who may use crypto to obscure where the funding is coming from for travel, I don't see any particular incentive for the rational consumer to pay for air travel with crypto over cash or credit. Perhaps someone can point out some reasons in the comments.

Finally, if you're hoping air travel may be a bit cheaper through crypto because you avoid credit card transaction or interchange fees, it won't be the case. Each crypto payment platform I reviewed had a small note about an additional "network transaction" or "miner fee" added to payments — explained away, in most cases, as the cost of verifying Bitcoin/crypto transactions. The amount of these fees weren't disclosed on any final checkout screens, and given the dynamic fluctuations in both pricing markets, it'd be almost impossible to find out the exact amount you're being charged for the courtesy of paying crypto. My suspicion is it's a nice bonus for the payment processors.

With some of the background to these payments covered, let's look at which airlines and agencies are accepting crypto for payment.

Participating Airlines and Agencies

airBaltic — The Latvian carrier began accepting Bitcoin for payment in 2015 and utilizes BitPay as the payment processor. There's a "miner fee" attached to each payment, which is made by scanning a QR code.

btc travel agent

BTCtrip.com — The online travel agency allows you to pay for flights with Bitcoin or Litecoin (LTC), showing prices only in the amount of BTC/LTC required. This European site definitely has an alternative feel to it, but had competitive prices for the routes I searched.

Cheapair.com — In 2013, Cheapair.com was the first US website to start accepting Bitcoin for travel. You can still pay for air, hotel and car rentals with Bitcoin on the site. Cheapair also uses Coinbase for payment processing.

btc travel agent

Destinia.com — The Spanish online travel agency accepts Bitcoin for flights, hotels and car rentals. Simply change the currency in the top-right corner to Bitcoin.

btc travel agent

Expedia — The online travel agency only accepts Bitcoin for hotels (not flights) and uses Coinbase. You can send BTC to an address or use your Coinbase wallet to pay.

btc travel agent

Peach — Japanese discount carrier Peach announced in May 2017 that it would begin accepting Bitcoin by the end of December 2017. However, I went through a few dummy bookings and it still doesn't appear to be a payment option.

Surf Air — The California-based all-you-can fly airline announced in December 2017 that it would accept Bitcoin and Ethereum for monthly payments. I went to the site to try and find any mention of the payment form and got all the way to a checkout page for a new membership, but only credit card was listed. I called the airline to check and got a "no one is here to accept your call, goodbye" message and a hangup.

Bottom Line

The people I know who have done extremely well over the last year with their crypto portfolio (gains in the 6-7 figures) told me they'd never pay for travel or goods right now with their crypto. They also added that while cryptocurrency continues to gain legitimacy, they should still be seen as risky place to park your money and treated akin to a trip to the Vegas craps tables.

A few airlines like LOT and Mexican regional carrier TAR have removed Bitcoin as a payment method, followed more recently by Microsoft removing Bitcoin as a payment method in its stores due to the dynamics and risk of the currency. With the current volatility of the currency, I don't foresee many carriers feeling a rush to begin accepting the currency this year. However, I suspect it will happen down the line if the current path of cryptocurrency gains continues.

Some of the trips & places enjoyed:London, Paris, Rome, waterfalls on the coast of Maui, the dream like waters and hills of Moorea & Bora Bora, walking the Great Wall of China and seeing the Terra Cotta soldiers, the golden statues and buildings in Bangkok, the beaches and delicious food and $10 massages in Phuket, the fantastic beaches in the Indian Ocean-Mauritius, Seychelles, Maldives, the safaris in Kenya and East Africa, the Nile River trip to see ancient Egypt, the north coast of Africa and the market in Marrakech, the carved limestone city of Petra, Jordan and Europe. We have been fortunate to have taken over 50 cruses. Our first cruise was on Royal Caribbean from Barbados in 1982. We like cruising. Ron likes to say, "the hotel moves every night", so you only unpack once. One of our favorite cruises was the Baltic Cruise to St. Petersburg, Russia on Azamara Cruise Line.Another cruise we liked was a cruise from Istanbul down the western Mediterranean coast and through the Suez Canal to the Jordan port of Aqaba. We left the ship here and went inland to Petra and then to Amman,Jordan. The next day was in to Jerusalem to visit the walled Old City before the next day home from Tel Aviv.

Other cruises that that we have taken where Alaska and New England Fall foliage cruises that are seasonal and have spectacular vistas. The Caribbean cruises have been easy for us and our clients to take by sailing from Galveston. It is a great way to get away from the job for along weekend or a week. We have been the Hawaii a several times, once with granddaughters, and love going back. You can cruise the Hawaiian Islands on either NCL cruises round trip from Honolulu or cruise on a couple of lines round trip from the West Coast.

PRESS RELEASES

Global travel advisor groups raise concerns around american airlines’ anti-competitive actions.

World Travel Agents Associations Alliance (WTAAA), Association of Canadian Travel Agencies and Travel Advisors (ACTA) and Foro Latinoamericano de Turismo (FOLATUR) Join ASTA in Speaking Out to Protect Travel Advisors and Consumers

Alexandria, VA, April 12, 2024  – The World Travel Agents Associations Alliance (WTAAA), Association of Canadian Travel Agencies and Travel Advisors (ACTA), and Foro Latinoamericano de Turismo (FOLATUR) have joined  the American Society of Travel Advisors (ASTA)  in sounding the alarm about American Airlines’ latest ploy to force travelers to use AA’s new, proprietary booking tool that leads to reduced consumer choice and higher costs. These three organizations, representing hundreds of thousands of travel advisors in more than 75 countries, each issued statements in response to American Airlines’ new policy, which will threaten the travel advisor industry globally.

Starting on May 1, American will no longer award AAdvantage rewards to flyers unless they book directly through American owned or preferred channels. This means that travelers who book flights with a travel agency could lose their right to earn miles. In their letters, all three organizations echoed concerns previously raised by ASTA, about the impact of American’s actions:

“American is actively discouraging travelers from booking through the travel agency channel. …This heavy-handed tactic will fragment distribution, drive up costs, and reduce transparency for consumers who seek to compare offerings across multiple airlines. It also demonstrates a troubling disregard for the critical role that travel agencies play in serving travelers, especially in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic when their expertise and personalized service were more valuable than ever.” –  WTAAA

“Restricting the ability to earn loyalty points through these channels will undoubtedly disadvantage consumers who value booking through their trusted travel partners. Furthermore, this decision will have far-reaching consequences for the openness and competitiveness of the travel marketplace. By leveraging its position to restrict consumer choice, American Airlines is engaging in practices that will lead to higher prices, stifled innovation, and a less dynamic travel industry.”  –  ACTA President Wendy Paradis

“If undeterred, AA will continue with its ever-increasing discriminating pattern, and other airlines in the oligopolistic air transportation market will certainly follow … Both air passenger in the US and foreign markets are and will increasingly be negatively affected by these anticompetitive business practices.” –  FOLATUR

“It’s clear from the consensus among WTAAA, ACTA and FOLATUR, representing travel professionals around the world, the detriment that American’s decision will have on the travel industry globally,” said Zane Kerby, President & CEO of ASTA. “American is operating in bad faith, looking to pad its bottom line at the expense of our valued clients and the millions of consumers who rely on their trusted travel advisor to help them secure the best price, value and peace of mind when it comes to their business and personal travel.”

ASTA recently launched the Save My Miles campaign to raise awareness and amplify the voices of travel advisors and consumers who will be impacted by American’s decision. For more information, visit:  www.savemymiles.com .

ABOUT ASTA Rebranded in 2018 as the American Society of Travel Advisors, ASTA is the leading global advocate for travel advisors, the travel industry and the traveling public. Its members represent 80 percent of all travel sold in the United States through the travel agency distribution channel. Together with hundreds of internationally-based members, ASTA’s history of industry advocacy traces back to its founding in 1931 when it launched with the mission to facilitate the business of selling travel through effective representation, shared knowledge and the enhancement of professionalism. Top three 2024 NFL free agents at every offensive position: Tyler Boyd, J.K. Dobbins among best options left

These are the best players still on the market.

usatsi-17412234-tyler-boyd-bengals-wr-td-1h-2021-1400.jpg

NFL free agency has passed its second wave as the top players have already signed , and the next crop of free agents have found a home for 2024. There are still some good players available, but the market has significantly dried up over the past few weeks.

Teams are focusing on the draft before free agency ramps up in its third wave, when compensatory picks no longer factor into the equation. Players who should be rostered are still available for the taking, if any team can't wait until after the draft.

These are the top three free agents available at every position.

Quarterback

The best of the free agent quarterbacks remaining, Tannehill is likely awaiting an opportunity compete for a starting job given his resume. Tannehill has 151 career starts in his 12-year career (81-70 record), throwing for 34,881 yards and 216 touchdowns with a 91.2 rating.

The 35-year-old Tannehill likely will have to wait until after the draft to sign with a team, as his veteran presence as a starter and a backup makes a quarterback room better. Tannehill can still compete for a starting job, even after his benching in Tennessee last season.

Hoyer actually made a start with the  Las Vegas Raiders  last season, as the 38-year-old quarterback has 41 starts to his resume. A prototypical backup quarterback at this stage of his career, it remains to be seen if Hoyer wants to continue playing after 15 seasons.

Las Vegas released Hoyer last month. If Hoyer wants to continue playing, he'll likely end up as quarterback depth somewhere.

Gabbert's days in Kansas City appear over after Carson Wentz signed in Kansas City, so the former first-round pick is likely looking for a new team. The 34-year old Gabbert has started 49 games in his career, but only one over the last four seasons (Week 18 game last season in which he completed 50% of his passes and threw three interceptions).

A veteran of 13 seasons, Gabbert is one of the most experienced backup quarterbacks remaining.

Running back

Injuries have certainly limited Dobbins, or else he would have been signed by now.  Prior to tearing his Achilles in Week 1, Dobbins averaged 5.7 yards per carry the previous season (92 carries, 520 yards, two touchdowns), this after a brutal knee injury that cost him the 2021 season.

Dobbins was dominant in his rookie season (2020), leading all  NFL  running backs in yards per carry (6.0) while setting a Ravens ' rookie record with nine rushing touchdowns (third amongst all NFL rookies). His 805 rushing yards were also third among rookie running backs as Dobbins finished with a Ravens' franchise-record seven consecutive games with a rushing touchdown.

If healthy, Dobbins is tremendous value for the team that signs him.

His best days may be behind him, yet Elliott is still a threat in the end zone. Elliott rushed for 642 yards and three touchdowns last season, averaging a career-low 3.5 yards per carry. A No. 2 running back at this stage, Elliott is an excellent fit in red zone packages -- even if he's turning 29 in July.

Hunt was a red zone force as a No. 2 running back in Cleveland last season, scoring nine touchdowns in 15 games. He rushed for 411 yards and averaged just 3.0 yards per carry, but still adds value to a running back room in short-yardage situations.

Wide receiver

A two-time 1,000-yard receiver in Cincinnati, Boyd was a valuable third option next to Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins . He finished with 67 catches for 667 yards and two touchdowns (10.0 yards per catch), but the 29-year-old wideout would be more productive with more targets.

Boyd has 6,000 career receiving yards and 31 touchdowns. He'll find a slot on a receiver-needy team.

One of the top options on a bad Carolina team last season, Chark had 35 catches for 525 yards and five touchdowns (15.0 yards per catch). The former Pro Bowl and 1,000-yard receiver can still stretch a defense and open things up for other wideouts.

Beckham wasn't worth the salary he received in Baltimore last season. He still was productive in an offense that spread the ball around, having 35 catches for 565 yards and three touchdowns (16.1 yards per catch).

Still productive as a deep-ball receiver, Beckham should have suitors amongst the contending teams.

A poor Washington offensive limited Thomas to 55 catches for 496 yards and four touchdowns (9.0 yards per catch). Thomas isn't a good separator, but the 32-year-old Thomas is a reliable pass catcher as a No. 2 tight end.

Tonyan had 11 touchdown catches in 2020, but has just four touchdowns since (including zero last year). He played in every game for Chicago, but had 11 catches for 112 yards last season. In Tonyan's last season with Green Bay (2022), he had 53 catches for 470 yards and two touchdowns.

Tonyan isn't a good blocker, but is a good pass-catching tight end in the right offense.

Slim pickings for the rest of the free agent tight end pool, as the former playoff standout for Cincinnati had just eight catches for 58 yards for New York last season. At this stage of his career, Uzomah is good tight end depth.

One of the best tackles in the game when healthy, Bakhtiari has missed 38 games over the last three seasons. A First Team All-Pro in 2020, Bakhtiari made five straight All-Pro teams prior to injuries catching up to him. He allowed just one sack and 10 pressures in 11 games in 2022.

The former first-round pick badly needs a change of scenery, allowing 12 sacks and 47 pressures in 613 pass-blocking snaps last season. Becton isn't even 25 yet (his birthday is this month), and last season was his first one back after missing 33 straight games due to right knee issues. If Becton has the knee issues beside him, he's worth taking a flyer with the right coach to develop him.

A veteran starter in the league, Smith allowed two sacks and 36 pressures in 476 pass-blocking snaps last season (7.6% pressure rate). Smith has started all 136 games he's played in the league, all at left tackle.

Peat can play left tackle, but his best position is guard. He allowed three sacks and 11 pressures with a 4.2% pressure rate in 310 pass-blocking snaps in his last season as guard (2022). Peat started 12 games and allowed two sacks and 30 pressures (6.5% pressure rate) at left tackle in 2023. Peat's versatility is valuable.

Risner didn't allow a sack in 459 pass-blocking snaps last season, but allowed a 6.3% pressure rate and started 11 games for Minnesota. Perhaps a better situation would salvage Risner's career as a starter, as he's started 73 games in the league.

Perhaps not having Zack Wilson under center will help the 32-year-old Tomlinson, who allowed seven sacks and 47 pressures in 695 pass-blocking snaps at left guard last season (6.8% pressure rate). Tomlinson allowed just one sack the previous season, so 2023 may be the outlier instead of the norm.

Another interior lineman who can play guard and center, Williams is arguably the best center left in free agency. The 26-year-old Williams allowed just one sack and six pressures in nine games last season with a 2.9% pressure rate.

A center for Chicago last season, Patrick allowed zero sacks and 23 pressures in 539 pass-blocking snaps last season (4.3% pressure rate). Patrick has also played left guard, having versatility on the interior of the offensive line. Patrick is still primarily a center and a better player there, evidenced by his 3.3% pressure rate allowed in Green Bay in 2021.

The former starting center for Los Angeles hasn't been right since knee and thumb injuries limited him to five games in 2022. Coleman Shelton beat out Allen for the starting center job in 2023, and Allen was relegated to backup duties.

Allen started in 32 of 50 regular-season games with Los Angeles, but allowed nine sacks in his last 23 games started. There are still starting jobs available for Allen.

Dedicated Agent Services From World Travel, Inc.

By Stephanie Berrier

To: Deans, Directors and Department Chairs; Campus Unit Finance Leads; Business Managers; Travel Arrangers From: Rebecca Spanos, Director, Travel and Payment Card Services

Over the past few months, Travel Services has been closely monitoring the level of service being provided by World Travel, Inc (WTI). During this time, we have received more frequent feedback from campus regarding delays in response time, errors in bookings, and overall unacceptable performance. While we may not have been able to respond directly to every email, please know that we have reviewed the information provided and greatly appreciate each of you who took the time to share.

WTI has also been acutely aware of these issues and has partnered with Travel Services to determine the best solution moving forward to improve the UNC-Chapel Hill travel booking experience.

Therefore, effective Tuesday, April 9, World Travel, Inc. has shifted UNC-Chapel Hill from a Designated Agent Team (agents shared with other higher-ed clients) to a Dedicated Team of Agents. These agents will be solely responsible for supporting bookings for UNC-Chapel Hill. If our volume exceeds the bandwidth of these agents, additional agents will be added to support. With this change, we expect to not only see reduced response times but higher levels of accuracy and overall service.

As this Dedicated Agent Team takes over, we ask that you continue to share your WTI experience with Travel Services. Both WTI and the University are committed to this partnership and its success, and your feedback is essential to ensure we drive continuous improvement towards this objective.

As a reminder, the Dedicated Agent Team is responsible for answering phone calls and emails from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday. After-hours phone support will still be provided by WTI outside of these hours, including weekends and holidays, but they do not have access to University emails. The after-hours team should only be contacted when there is an urgent need to book, exchange or cancel a reservation.

Travel tips for snowbirds returning to Canada

From: Canada Border Services Agency

News release

April 12, 2024 Ottawa, Ontario

The Canada Border Services Agency and the Canadian Snowbird Association are encouraging Canadians who have spent the winter abroad to plan ahead for a smooth return to Canada this spring.

These are the top travel tips to know before arriving at the border:

Have your travel documents handy.  Whether travelling by land, air or water, you can help speed up processing times by coming prepared with your travel documents.

Driving home? Plan ahead and check  border wait times . You can avoid waiting in line by planning your drive to cross the border during non-peak hours such as early morning.

Flying home? Save time with Advance Declaration .  Download the application on your smart phone to make your customs declaration up to 72 hours in advance of your arrival into Canada at the Toronto, Vancouver, Montréal, Winnipeg, Halifax, Québec City, Ottawa, Billy Bishop, Calgary and Edmonton international airports. Data shows that using this tool can reduce time at a kiosk or eGate by up to 50%.

Be prepared to declare your goods upon entry into Canada.  Gather your receipts for goods purchased or received while away before you travel and keep them readily available. Visit I Declare: A guide for residents returning to Canada and use the  CBSA duty and taxes estimator  to help calculate your monies owed. You should be aware of everything that is inside your vehicle as you are responsible for its contents.

Know your exemptions from duties and taxes .  If you have been outside of Canada seven days or more, you can import goods worth up to CAN$800, duty-and tax-free. Within this personal exemption, you are allowed to bring back duty and tax free:

  • Two bottles of wine (1.5 litres total), or one large standard bottle of liquor (1.14 litres),  or  approximately 24 cans or bottles (355 ml each) of beer (8.5 litres total); and,
  • 200 cigarettes, and 50 cigars, and 200 grams manufactured tobacco,  and  200 tobacco sticks. The packages must be stamped “duty paid,” as you would find them at a duty-free store.

Travelling with medication?  If you have a prescription for a narcotic or controlled drug, you must declare it and ensure its in properly labelled container. Learn more about your responsibilities .

Travelling with firearms? If you are travelling with a firearm be sure to check the  rules on importing firearms  and other  restricted and prohibited goods before your departure. Better yet, consider leaving the firearm at home.

Importing a vehicle ?   If you are a resident of Canada you can  temporarily import a vehicle  that is licensed and registered in the United States, however, the duty and tax implications, the length of time the vehicle can remain in Canada, and how the vehicle can be used in Canada may differ. If you are permanently importing a vehicle from the U.S. or Mexico, visit Canada’s  Registrar of Imported Vehicles  website prior to arriving at the border for details about vehicle eligibility and the overall process, including the necessary duties and taxes.

Bringing poultry across the border?  Any poultry products you wish to bring into Canada must be for human consumption, retail packaged and labelled as a "Product of the USA." Homemade food or leftovers containing poultry cannot be brought into Canada. Check the latest  Information for travellers: Restrictions on poultry and birds from the United States  before bringing these products across the border.

Travelling with a pet or importing an animal into Canada? You will need the right paperwork at the border to meet Canada's import requirements.

Not sure? Ask a border officer.  The best thing you can do to save time is to be open and honest with the CBSA officer. Be sure to follow all instructions they provide to you. If you are not sure about what to declare, don't hesitate to ask. Our officers are here to help!
