Access to remote areas

We take the idea of getting you off-the-beaten track seriously. Forget seeing a destination; we want you to experience it. Our camping trips will take you where busloads of tourists can’t, with feature stays in remote locations you won’t find in any travel brochures.

camping bus tours australia

Memorable experiences

It’s not every day you can fall asleep to the wild sounds of the Serengeti, swap stories around a campfire in the US or count the stars over the Australian Outback . On our camping trips, the fun doesn’t have to stop when the sun goes down – and that’s a promise.

More conscious camping

Responsible travel is at the forefront of every trip we run. We encourage every traveller to think about the environment and how we can make a positive impact, especially on our camping trips. We leave behind zero waste and camp in established areas where we can.

Our favourite camping experiences

Two giraffes standing in trees in Serengeti National Park, Tanzania

Hear the call of the wild in the Serengeti

One of the main drawcards of Africa is the chance to experience your very own ‘circle of life’ moment, and luckily for you, our 10-day East Africa Highlights trip allows you to do exactly that. With two nights camping in Serengeti National Park and no barrier between you and the bush, you’ll get as close to the animal action as possible while still remaining safe with your experienced three-person crew. All you have to focus on is the sound of the wilderness around you and the millions of stars above you.

A group of travellers standing with local Maasai women in the campsite at Loita Hills

Visit the Maasai in the remote Loita Hills

While Loita Hills is an extremely remote destination in Kenya (taking approximately 5-6 hours from Lake Naivasha), visiting the home of the proud Maasai people and learning about their daily life and ancient ways makes up for the long drive. Arrive on Maasai land in the early afternoon and set up your tent for the night before meeting a local elder to chat all things culture and customs. There’ll be no WIFI or shower facilities, but we reckon this is one experience that’s worth the small sacrifice.

A woman posing for a photo in front of iconic rock formations in Monument Valley.

Discover the delights of Monument Valley

There are few places in the United States that’ll leave you in dumbstruck awe quite like Monument Valley in Utah . Named for its giant sandstone formations naturally created over the centuries, this part of the state’s southeast is well worth exploring from iconic movie scene sites (anyone seen Forrest Gump?) and roadside stalls full of authentic snacks. After a full day of fun, debrief and unwind at your accommodation for the night - a traditional Navajo hut made from logs and dirt.

Two female travellers sitting at the mouth of a permanent tent in a campsite in the red centre.

Fall asleep to the sounds of the Aussie Outback

If you’re after a true Aussie experience, our Uluru & Kings Canyon adventure is the trip for you. Not only will you see some of Australia’s most beautiful natural wonders, but you’ll also get to camp right in the middle of the desert in a campsite with permanent tents solely set up for our use. Sit around the fire at night, swapping stories of the day’s fun and wake up as the sun starts to light up the rich, red colour of the earth all around you. That’ll be one sunrise you definitely don’t want to miss.

A line of camels walking over the sand dunes in Morocco.

Escape the modern world in the Sahara Desert

Forget vehicular transportation; ride a camel instead towards your incredible solar-powered accommodation for the night in Morocco’s Saraha Desert. Hidden away among the sand dunes, this magical camp promises an escape from the modern world without straying too far from the premium amenities you’re accustomed to – think permanent tents with large beds, private ensuite bathrooms and authentic Moroccan décor. The best part? A traditional feast under the stars and live Gnaoua music to send you off to sleep.

An aerial view of permanent camps in Serengeti National Park in Tanzania

Gain access to amazing wildlife in Tanzania

What’s better than a one-night stay in permanent tented camps in Tarangire National Park? A two-night stay. That’s right. On our Premium Tanzania trip, relax in your room for the next couple of days and watch wildlife you’ve only ever seen in books casually walk past your tent’s veranda (think zebras, wildebeest and elephants – oh my!). As if that’s not enough, this eco-friendly camp features modern comforts such as ensuite bathrooms and a dining area perfect for eating with your fellow travellers.

A row of permanent tents in the Wadi Rum Desert in Jordan

Sleep under the stars in Jordan’s Wadi Rum

There are some spectacular landscapes in this world. And then there’s the Wadi Rum Desert in Jordan. With an early wake-up call for a stunning sunrise you won’t easily forget and a thrill-seeking 4WD adventure over the dunes in your near future, the Wadi Rum Desert is a sight to behold – one you don’t have to leave when the sun starts to set. Make yourself at home at your Bedouin-style camp and get to know your hosts over plenty of glasses of mint tea, or as the locals call it ‘Bedouin whisky’.

What is a camping trip at Intrepid?

At Intrepid, we define camping trips as trips where the majority of nights use camping for accommodation. These include trips in North America, Sub-Saharan Africa, Australia and along the Inca trail.

What kind of camping trips are there?

Most of our camping trips are in our Basix style; they keep things simple while promising an amazing trip experience for those on a budget. On our Basix style camping trips, you'll likely have to erect your own tent and pitch in around the campsite, including cooking meals and doing the washing up. However, we do have some camping trips in our Original, Comfort and Premium styles. These styles will often mean camping in pre-erected tents (by the crew) or permanent tented campsites.

Read more about our trip styles

Will I have to set up my own tent?

On some trips, you will have to set up your own tent - these trips will often be part of our Basix style range. But don't worry if you've never done it before; your local leaders and expert guides (not to mention your friendly fellow travellers) will be around to give you a helping hand.

Are the camping trips safe?

On some trips you will at times stay in unfenced campsites within National Parks. While this is a fantastic experience, there are a few safety rules to follow and it's important that you listen to any advice given by your leader and the park rangers regarding responsible and safe behaviour. This can include things like not leaving any meat or cooked food out overnight and cleaning up thoroughly before you leave the campsite.

Are camping trips accessible for travellers with disabilities?

We're committed to making travel widely accessible, regardless of ability or disability. That’s why we do our best to help as many people see the world as possible, regardless of any physical or mental limitations they might have. However, we’re always happy to talk to travellers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them towards the most suitable itinerary for their needs and where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

Backpacker tours in Australia

A popular option with both domestic and international travellers, a backpacker tour gives individuals the chance to travel light and cheaply at the same time as taking in some of the best backpacker tours which the country has to offer. There are an enormous variety of travel tours out there for adventurous people who want to make memories. Accessible on a limited budget, we take a look at some of the opportunities out there to make your Australian backpacking trip one to remember.

The East Coast Tour is an absolute must!

When it comes to adventure tours, travelling some or all of Australia’s east coast is an essential! Traditionally the trip spans the coast from Melbourne right up to Cairns (although travellers can start at either end of the coast, or travel smaller sections). The route passes through three states: Victoria, New South Wales (NSW) and Queensland.

Discover Victoria

Although traditionally the East Coast tour commenced at Sydney, a growing number of people are choosing to begin their adventure in Melbourne. Possibly one of the coolest cities on the planet, Melbourne has a laid-back yet sophisticated vibe which is almost irresistible. From the iconic Flinders station, through to the free street tram, numerous parks and intriguing architecture, Melbourne makes a great base from which to explore the surrounding area. It also benefits from an enormous number of restaurants, bars and clubs, where there are plenty of employment opportunities if you’re looking to supplement your travels with some additional cash. Close to the Wilson’s Promontory National Park, it’s also near Phillip Island (if you love penguins this has to be on your bucket list) and the Yarra Valley, well-known for its impressive vineyards and superior wines.

Move northwards to Fraser Island

The classic backpacking route for East Coast devotees is along Highway 1, which circumnavigates the entire country. Brisbane and the Gold Coast offer numerous opportunities for adventure tours and travel tours. If you’re near Brisbane, why not consider an expedition into the rainforest, or a driving tour in the local area? North of Brisbane, lying off the coast, is Fraser Island. The largest sand island on the planet, it’s the only sand island which also hosts a rain forest! Listed as a World Heritage Site, a tour of Fraser Island provides the opportunity to experience a unique, stunning natural environment.

Consider a tour of the Whitsundays

Located adjacent to the Conway National Park the Whitsundays are the perfect spot to enjoy anything from a snorkelling tour through to some turtle spotting. The Whitsundays are a popular location for day trippers and diving enthusiasts, as well as a haven for wildlife. If you’re visiting Whitsundays, a trip to Whitehaven beach is essential – as famous as Bondi, Whitehaven’s stunning fusion of white sand and blue ocean makes it an idyllic option. Many people choose to fly over Heart Reef, a tiny island which is, indeed, almost perfectly heart-shaped. If sailing is your passion, the Whitsundays are a great location to enjoy as part of a mini-cruise or a day on the water. From the Whitsundays, many people continue northwards towards Cairns and the chance to visit the Great Barrier Reef

Snorkelling tours around the Great Barrier Reef

The largest coral reef in the world, the Great Barrier Reef is a location of exceptional ecological importance as well as one of the most beautiful places on earth. A snorkelling tour is the perfect opportunity to explore this exquisite underwater landscape. Brightly coloured fish dart among the coral, creating a stunning seascape that’s absolutely unmissable. With more than 900 islands and 2900 reefs, the Great Barrier Reef is a must-visit destination. If snorkelling isn’t your thing, why not view the coral through one of the glass-bottomed boats which offer regular tours?

Travel inland to Alice Springs, or take an Uluru tour

Although the East Coast has an enormous range of sights and experiences on offer, no backpacking trip in Australia would be complete without a journey to the interior. A popular tourist destination, Alice Springs (NT) is located within driving distance of the legendary Uluru (Ayres Rock), an impressive sandstone monolith which is of enormous cultural importance to the indigenous Australian people. Uluru tours allow visitors not only to visit the rock itself, but also to take in some of the arid scenery which forms much of inland Australia as well as trips to Kata Tjuta and Kings Canyon. Alice Springs has plenty of attractions, including a Desert Park, reptile centre and some intriguing museums. A camping tour of these iconic locations is a great opportunity to get closer to the amazing plants and animals in the area.

Variety of backpacker tours available

The traditional image of a backpacker is that of an individual who mainly walks or uses public transport to reach their next destination. Contemporary backpackers often prefer a more diverse range of options when it comes to getting the most from their travelling. Adventure tours or travel tours are a good way of seeing more of what Australia has to offer, as well as giving access to unique experiences such as bush camping, snorkelling, sailing, off-road driving, outback tours and more. These can either be completed as trips in their own right, or as an add-on to a longer trip along the East Coast route.

An organised adventure tour can have many benefits

A package adventure tour provides the opportunity to enjoy many of the country’s most stunning areas in relative comfort. Frequently a tour includes specialist equipment and vehicles, enabling you to take part without needing to buy additional kit. Because you will be accompanied by an experienced guide, it’s possible to visit more remote and potentially dangerous locations safely. Guides also tend to have an in-depth knowledge of the local area, enabling you to find out more and get a much deeper insight into the location during your visit. If you want to get the most from your time backpacking, adding a suitable tour to your itinerary can be of real benefit.

The 15-day Birdsville, Strzelecki and Oodnadatta 4WD accommodated and outback camp tour runs through remote sand dune country, mining towns and includes Lake Eyre. While the 17-day Kimberley and Tanami Desert Australian outback safari tour, criss-crosses Western Australia and the Northern Territory, from the coast to the red centre.

Accommodation

Our Australian outback tours offer a combination of motel and camping accommodation. The 17-day tour only has 1 night in a motel, the rest is camping. This is due to the remote nature of the places we visit. All tours provide a connection to country.

If you’re planning an Australian outback adventure, contact Oz Tours Safaris today. We’ve been running professional tours for over 30 years. We deliver exceptional outback safari tours, covering the best bits of country and culture. We’ll show you, our country.

About the Australian Outback

The Australian Outback is a landscape of red earth that occupies much of the country’s vast interior. It’s an unforgiving terrain which bears the mark of early settlers and their attempts to forge an existence here. Abandoned mines and townships bear testament to their efforts. It’s also a place rich with nature and culture and Oz Tours Safaris explore the best bits of the Australian outback on three very different outback safari tours.

The 15-day central desert outback safari tour includes the Birdsville, Strzelecki and Oodnadatta Tracks. It showcases what most visitors’ think of when imagining the Australian Outback; open space, endless dirt roads, red sand, extreme temperatures, no people and dangerous wildlife.

The Australian Outback is as harsh as it is beautiful. It covers about 80% of the state and has 1% of the population but is an absolute must see when visiting Australia. Even people who have travelled the whole world are taken by the beauty and absolute remoteness of the terrain, when they’re on an Australian outback holiday. Stony deserts, saltpans and sand hills roamed by kangaroos, dingoes and eagles can be expected when exploring this landscape

Learn the history and culture of the original inhabitants and the people who opened up this area to European settlers, on one of our amazing outback adventure tours. We trace the pioneer stock routes, the path of the old Ghan Rail track and stand at the very centre of Australia. Visit the sites and towns of a bygone era and take in the natural beauty of the ancient landscape of central Australia.

Outback travel Australia is always difficult through these parts. Even today there are only four main routes, each with an individual character and history. One of them, the Birdsville Track, is famed in Australian Outback history as the trail along which stockmen once drove their herds of cattle from Queensland.

australian outback adventure

Another, the Strzelecki Track, runs through remote, sand dune country to Innamincka and on to Cooper Creek. Both these tracks cut through the “dog fence”, a 5,600km long barrier designed to keep dingoes out of the pastoral lands to the south. Following the Oodnadatta Track, you will come across mining towns where people from all over the world have been turned loose in the maddening search for opal. Natural springs coming above ground from the Great Artesian Basin and remains of the Great Northern Railway and the First Telegraph Line are rewarding treats on these very remote tracks.

You must take your time to truly enjoy and inhale the outback spirit, on one of our outback adventures. You will come back enlightened, excited and more relaxed than you have ever been in your life.

australian outback safari tours

The other is our epic 17-day 4WD outback camp tour in the Kimberley and Tanami Desert. This region offers one of the most spectacularly rugged coast lines in the world. The perfect place for an outback Aussie tour. A place of soaring red cliffs and cascading waterfalls, tidal rivers lined with dense rainforest, sprawling mangroves and all are teaming with wildlife. The area is virtually unspoilt, and for a very simple reason! It’s remote. It covers about 421,000 square kilometres, slightly larger than Japan and much larger than United Kingdom, New Zealand, or the Australian state of Victoria. The Kimberley has only three towns with a population of more than 2,000 (Broome, Derby and Kununurra), and the total population is only around 25,000. This outback adventure is 16 nights of camping and 1 night in a motel.

So much to say about Carla Williams. She is a terrific tour guide. Very organized. Very accessible. Very cordial. She managed to get 24 people of different ages and backgrounds to mingle and appreciate one another. She is very good with people and with the large number it is quite amazing. Kudos to Carla. Housing: Kalbarri should be upgraded. Monkey Mia was terrific. Coral Bay and Exmouth were both good. Food: Breakfasts could improve. Additions of fresh fruit...yogurt...coffee cake/muffins? Lunches needed some variety. This may be difficult. Salads? Dinners were tasty and a good selection. Having all help with the cooking aided with group dynamics. Again Carla was very organized. The bus: need a bigger one. Activities: excellent. I'm amazed at all we got in. Carla was a good and knowledge guide. Enthusiastic.

Nat was my tour guide and she was brilliant! Knew a lot of knowledge and didn’t “white wash” Australia’s history! Had alot of positive energy and joined in on activities which helped people to give everything a go. Cooked good meals, cracked some jokes with us and made sure we got the most of our trip! 1000% would recommend and have been to all my friends & family are jealous of all the photos I’ve shared on my socials :)

The trip was great. However, I didn’t like the hostel in Airlie Beach. It was the worst one in this trip. Overall was great
I loved every aspect of this tour. Geoff was an AMAZING tour guide!!
A great tour with an excellent driver/guide, Carlos, full of information, well organized and sensitive to our needs. Lots of wonderful places to see and experience from sunrise to sunset. Long bus rides at times and a full bus so little room to stretch out. But worth traveling the distances. Highly recommend the one way tour and fly out from Exmouth

Find Northern Territory tours and tour packages here that depart from Alice Springs , Uluru (Ayers Rock), and Darwin to see Uluru (Ayers Rock) and Kakadu National Park in Australia. Have a great holiday in the Northern Territory on our active and adventurous tours.

You will find Northern Territory outback camping adventure tours here – some with permanent campsites (comfort camping) and others with traditional or bush camping (swags). Our Top End tours require a certain level of participation from guests. This may include assisting and cleaning afterward with the preparation of meals, collecting firewood, and sweeping out tents.

Some of our Northern Territory travel packages have the option to upgrade to hotel/lodge accommodation. So just check with us when booking and we can provide the accommodation options. We are all about adventures in Australia on our small group tours. Trying to get you out of the city, into nature, and off the beaten track. Our tours from Darwin are mostly 4WD adventures, taking you on the dirt roads to the hidden gems of the Top End .

The Northern Territory has a diverse range of climatic conditions and habitats from the central Australia desert region around Alice Springs to the tropics around Darwin. You can take a tour from Alice Springs or Ayres Rock airport depending on where you get the best value flights into. All our Uluru tours finish in Alice Springs or Ayers Rock, go onto Adelaide in the south or Darwin in the north. We have larger tour packages for Australia starting in Darwin or Alice Springs going onto Melbourne or Sydney.

All Kakadu and Litchfield shorter tours start from Darwin and return to Darwin. Like our popular one-day tours in the Northern Territory:  1 day Kakadu tou r and 1 day Litchfield tour. We have longer overland tour packages to Alice Springs, Adelaide, Melbourne and Sydney.

We also have our tours starting in Northern Territory and heading to Broome in Western Australia. These take you through the Kimberley region. Our most popular tour is our 10 day Darwin to Broome Kimberley Tour. This tour operates from April to October every year which is the dry season up in the Kimberley region.

Follow historic trails and marvel at the endeavours of our extraordinary explorers

In 1860’s Australia, there was fierce competition between the colonies to map the interior and host the terminus of the Australian Overland Telegraph Line. Only one thing stood in their way; the Australian continent. In 1860 Burke and Wills departed Melbourne with much fanfare, arriving on the shores of the Gulf of Carpentaria in 1861. Eighteen weeks later, their expedition ended in tragedy on the banks of Cooper’s Creek. The ‘Dig Tree’, a lonely coolibah under which supplies had been buried, still stands to this day.

In that same year, John McDouall Stuart set off from Adelaide to cross the continent, reaching the north coast east of Darwin on the July 24, 1862. They returned home safely, maintaining Stuart’s impeccable record of never losing a man.

The story of these brave explorers is utterly fascinating, and retracing part of their expeditions makes for an incredible adventure.

Fundamental to understanding Australia as a whole is an appreciation of first nations culture, its history and relation to country. Intercultural exchanges with First Nation communities are one way we seek to inspire this.
