Amtrak welcomes small dogs and cats (sorry, no parrots, snakes, fish, lizards, hamsters or any other companion critters) in a carrier, and the combined weight of the pet and the carrier must be under 20 pounds. So all you Doodle, Lab, Boxer and Dane people are out of luck. But if you have a petite pup, you can bring them along, for a small fee.

Pets are welcome on most routes that are up to seven hours. Your pet must be at least eight weeks old, up to date on all vaccinations and non-disruptive—meaning, not the barky or hissy type. Here’s the catch, though: the total number of animals allowed on a train is five, so you’ll need to make a reservation well in advance to snag a spot.

To reserve a ticket for you and your pet, go to Amtrak.com . You’ll have the option to add a pet to your reservation. Depending on the route, fees range from $30 to $40 per pet. You’ll have to read and sign a Pet Release and Indemnification Agreement before getting to the station. A few rules to note about traveling with your dog or cat on Amtrak: your pet carrier counts as a piece of luggage and must be placed under your seat (not in front of you). If you’re planning to travel by train in the US and want to make sure that your beloved pet will be welcomed on board, have a good look at Amtrak’s pet policy first.

Your dog can only travel on Amtrak trains if they are kept in a closed carrier at all times. The carrier must be placed under your seat. You must always be near the carrier to care for your pet and never leave them alone.

Your pet carrier can be soft sided or hard sided but must be leak proof and allow for air flow. Your pet carrier must not exceed the following dimensions: 19 inches in length, 14 inches in width, and 10.5 inches in height.

Your pet carrier is considered as one piece of carry-on luggage.

If you cannot guarantee that your dog (or cat) will be well-behaved and silent during your Amtrak train trip, visit your vet well ahead of time and ask for medication or tips to calm down your pet. Test the medication and try out the tips out before your train trip to ensure your pet reacts the way you need them to.

We love our pets, and we love traveling with them . And taking the train can be an affordable and easy way to travel around the country.

But boarding with your furry friend requires a good amount of planning and preparation. Here’s what you need to know about traveling with your pet on a train. Note: These rules do not apply to service animals.

Before you book your train trip

First, not all trains allow pets. While some local, regional or scenic trains do, the fees and rules vary. For example, some trains limit pets to specific animals, have weight limits or require that pets travel in a carrier. So, it’s important to do your homework.

Amtrak offers the most routes across the United States, and pets are welcome on many of the trains. You can travel with one dog or cat (sorry birds, bunnies, gerbils and ferrets) weighing a maximum of 20 pounds, including the carrier. Your pet will also have to stay in that carrier under your seat (more on that later).

You can travel up to seven hours with your pet, but that includes transfer time if changing trains. If it’s just you and your pet, you may want to pack some snacks for both of you because pets can’t go in a café or dining car and you can’t leave your pet alone under your seat.

Pets also are not allowed in first class, sleeper cars and non-Acela business class.

You will have to fill out an online pet release and indemnification agreement before traveling. Among the requirements: Your pet must be at least 8 weeks old and up to date on vaccinations, as well as odorless, harmless and nondisruptive during travel.

If these requirements sound too strict for your furry companion, keep in mind that Amtrak has the right to refuse or remove your pet from the train if any policies are violated.

Prepare your pet for the train ride

If your pet checks all the boxes, the next step is to make sure you have everything you need to board the train.

Amtrak requires that your pet can sit and lie down without touching the sides of a leak-proof and well-ventilated carrier that doesn’t exceed 19 inches long by 14 inches wide by 10.5 inches high.

Pets traveling on the Alaska Railroad must be in an airline-approved kennel and have to ride in the baggage car.

Before your trip, make sure your pet is acclimated to the carrier. And if possible, take your pet to a train station so your pet can become more familiar with the sounds and sights. Even better, consider taking a short train ride with your pet to help them become more comfortable with the train’s noises and movements.

Request your pet’s vaccination and other records from the veterinarian in case of an emergency. If your pet is anxious or tends to bark at unknown sounds, ask the vet about ways to keep your pet calm and quiet during the ride. Ask also about motion sickness preventives and getting a microchip implanted into your pet in case it runs off in an unknown destination.

When packing, your pet’s carrier counts as one carry-on so plan strategically for the other. A backpack or shoulder bag allows you to keep your hands free for handling your pet. Pack a collapsible water bowl, water, treats and a favorite (nonsqueaky) toy to keep your pet comfortable during the trip. It’s a good idea to line the carrier with an absorbent pad and bring bags and an extra towel to clean up any accidents that may happen while on the train.

Plan to arrive at least 45 minutes before boarding at any staffed Amtrak station. Once you’re there, check in with the ticket office where agents will validate your pet’s eligibility and paperwork. At unstaffed stations, the train conductor will do this. Note: Your pet must always remain in the closed carrier while in the station and on the train. Pets are not allowed inside Amtrak station lounges or first-class waiting areas.

Tips for traveling on the train

The route you are traveling will determine where you sit. Some trains have a pet-friendly coach car; others allow you to sit in any coach car. If the train has a pet-friendly quiet car, consider sitting there as there will be less noise and fewer distractions. If possible, avoid peak travel times and rush hours for the best experience.

To help avoid motion sickness, feed your pet a light meal three hours before departure .

A tired pet is a happy pet, so exercise your pet before boarding.

And lastly, keep an eye on the schedule so you’ll have all the time you need to disembark.

Carry-on pet program available on amtrak pacific surfliner trains.

WASHINGTON — Amtrak and the Los Angeles – San Diego – San Luis Obispo (LOSSAN) Rail Corridor Agency, which manages the Amtrak Pacific Surfliner service, introduced a pet program for the Southern California train route. Amtrak Pacific Surfliner passengers can now bring their dogs and cats weighing up to 20 pounds onboard Pacific Surfliner trains for only $26 or 800 Amtrak Guest Reward points beginning May 20.

“We’re always looking for ways to better serve the needs of our passengers, and allowing pets to come along for the ride is something our customers have expressed a strong interest in,” said Jason Jewell, Interim Managing Director of the LOSSAN Agency. “This pet program will provide more options for our customers in a way that will be safe and convenient, and we’re thrilled to introduce it ahead of the summer travel season.”

“Nobody likes to be left behind, which is why we are pleased to expand Amtrak’s pet program to Pacific Surfliner trains,” said Jeanne Cantu. Amtrak Vice President, California. “With pets being an integral part of the family, customers can bring their pets, making traveling with a four-legged friend easy and enjoyable for the entire family.”

The Pacific Surfliner travels along a 351-mile route through San Diego, Orange, Los Angeles, Ventura, Santa Barbara, and San Luis Obispo counties, with portions of the route hugging the Southern California coastline. All Pacific Surfliner trains feature comfortable, reclining seats with power outlets, Wi-Fi, bike and luggage racks, a free and generous baggage policy, and an onboard Market Café that offers fresh food, snacks, and beverages, including California wines, cocktails, and local craft beer.

In alignment with Amtrak’s national pet policy, a limited number of pet reservations are available per train and each customer is limited to one pet reservation per trip. Pets will be allowed in all cars, except for Business Class and the Café car. Pets must remain in a carrier at all times and carriers should remain under their seat. Amtrak continues to welcome service animals on board at no charge.

How to Travel on Amtrak Trains with a Dog in 2024

If you’re just travelling a short distance in the United States , it can often be quicker and cheaper to travel by train instead of flying, especially if you are travelling between city centres. Luckily then, for a number of years Amtrak has allowed small pets to travel on many of its train services, similar to flying in the cabin of a plane with your pet.

Find out everything you need to know about how to travel on Amtrak with a dog, from the rules for travelling with a pet on Amtrak to how much it costs and how to make a booking. Plus, I cover in detail our experience of travelling with our dog on Amtrak from New York City to Philadelphia and then to Washington, D.C.

Are Pets Allowed on Amtrak?

Both small dogs and cats are allowed on Amtrak trains, although naturally there are some restrictions. For starters, not all trains allow pets on board. (If you’re travelling with service animals, they are welcome on all Amtrak services and these rules don’t apply.)

Pets are not allowed to travel on the Auto Train, San Joaquins, Capitol Corridor and Thruway Connecting Services. Pets are also not allowed to travel on board the Adirondack, Maple Leaf or Amtrak Cascades in Canada.

Note that the previous prohibition on the Keystone Service and Pennsylvanian has been removed. Double check the latest list at the top of Amtrak’s pet policy for the latest list of services where pets are not allowed.

Other key rules to keep in mind are that the maximum weight of both dogs and cats, including their carrier, is limited to 20 pounds (9kg). There is also a limit of one pet per customer (as the pet must be stowed underneath your seat except on Amtrak Cascades trains), plus your pet must be at least eight weeks old and be vaccinated.

Pets are only allowed on trips up to seven hours in duration, including transfer time for multi-segment trips. Pets are only allowed in coach class, not in first class, business class or sleeping cars, except for Acela business class. Pets are also prohibition from the Quiet Car on Keystone and Pennsylvanian trains.

Refer to the Amtrak pet policy for details of the carrier your pet needs to travel in. The maximum size is 19″ long x 14″ wide x 10.5″ high. It can be either hard or soft, but must be leak-proof, well-ventilated and large enough for your pet to sit and lie down inside without touching the sides.

Note that your pet in its carrier counts as a piece of carry-on baggage (out of your normal limit of two carry-on pieces and two personal items). Your pet must remain inside its carrier both at the train station and while on the train, and you are not allowed to leave your pet alone.

Booking Your Pet on Amtrak

There is a limit to the number of pets allowed on each Amtrak train service, usually five pets, so try and book your train trip in advance.

Unfortunately, it’s not quite as easy as it used to be to book an Amtrak train trip with your pet. Whereas previously the number of remaining pet spots on each train service was clearly displayed when the list of train services to select from were listed (plus made clear which train services were pet-friendly), this is no longer provided.

To double-check that the train service you’d like to book is pet-friendly, once you’ve started your search, I recommend clicking on Trip Details and then Services under the train service. Underneath Add-Ons, “Pet” should be displayed.

Once you’ve comfirmed your preferred train service allows pets, then choose your seat type and ticket option (whether Saver, Value or Flexible). On the next screen, the Trip Summary screen, you’ll be displayed a list of Additional Items and be able to add your pet, along with see the price charged. The number of pets you can add depends on the number of passengers in the booking.

Click Add to Cart, and then it’s time to finalise your booking, including entering passenger details, and pay for your tickets. It’s also possible to make pet reservations through the customer call centre or at staffed Amtrak stations.

The fee for traveling with a pet varies depending on the train service and distance travelled, as of December 2023. Currently the pet fee is either $29 or $39 per segment. The full list of pet fees is displayed on this page, plus the fee is listed when you add a pet to your trip.

This fee is higher than I’ve experienced on trains in Europe (where in many countries a small pet in a carrier bag rides for free), but it is far cheaper than the fee charges for pets to fly in the cabin on US airlines .

Checking in with Your Pet

We travelled with our dog on two Amtrak train trips in 2018: firstly from New York City to Philadelphia, then from Philadelphia on to Washington, D.C . We made sure to arrive in plenty of time for both trips.

Amtrak requests that people traveling with a pet from staffed stations (like we were), to check-in at the ticket office 45 minutes before departure. I don’t believe this is a hard cut-off like when checking in for a flight. Although we did go close to finding out in New York!

In my experience though, the down-side is then it’s a long wait after checking in until the platform number is announced for trains. And pets can’t join you in any station lounges or First Class waiting areas.

At the ticket office, the staff member looked up our booking, had a quick glance at our pet carrier bag with our dog inside (although didn’t weigh or measure it), and then handed us a Pet Release and Indemnification Agreement to sign. (This form is available at the end of your booking, or later through “My Trip”.)

It’s best to review this ahead of time, so you are familiar with the contents, but you don’t need to print it and bring it to the station. If you are traveling from an unstaffed station, speak to the conductor who will validate your pet’s eligibility and paperwork.

Boarding the Train with Your Pet

Once the platform for our train was announced each time, we headed downstairs to the train. Previously it was stated that you need to sign the provided form and return it to a crew member, but this no longer applies (and wasn’t even enforced when we travelled in 2018).

The other confusing thing is that despite having “reserved coach” tickets, you generally don’t have a specific seat reserved. “Reserved” just simply means you are guaranteed a seat (with a maximum number of tickets sold for the train).

Except for a few trains that have a specific car for pets, you can sit anywhere, on any coach car (although perhaps skip the quiet car).

The trains with a specific car for pets include: Amtrak Cascades, Carl Sandburg, Illinois Zephyr, Illini, Lincoln Service, Saluki, Pere Marquette, Wolverine, Blue Water, Hiawatha and Missouri River Runner. Pets are also not allowed in the quiet car on Keystone and Pennsylvanian trains.

Additionally, it’s possible to travel with a pet on Acela trains in business class cars, where it’s possible to reserve an exact seat.

On-Board the Train with a Pet

Once you’ve found seats onboard the train, place your pet in their carrier bag underneath your seat. (The seats are constructed differently than on a plane, so there’s a gap underneath your seat, rather than the seat in front.)

The one exception is Amtrak Cascades trains where you can put your pet carrier on the floor in front of the seat next to you. It’s even possible to stow your pet’s carrier bag in your footwell, if you would prefer, as it’s quite roomy.

Sometime after boarding, a ticket inspector will come around the check your tickets. At this point, also hand over your pet agreement form.

At the time of our trip, as well putting some tags in the holder above our seat to indicate our ticket had been checked (and perhaps the destination), the ticket inspector also placed a paw print tag there.

Now it’s time to sit back and relax for your train trip. Note that until you disembark and depart from your destination station, your dog will still need to stay in their carrier bag. And if you’re planning on heading to the food service car, you won’t be able to take your pet. (Perhaps pack a snack instead.)

Other Dog-Friendly Trains in the United States

In addition to Amtrak, there are a number of other regional trains in the United States where pets are allowed to travel onboard with you.

The most common scenario is that small pets in a secure, enclosed carrier are allowed to travel with you, similar to the Amtrak pet policy. Some of the trains that this applies on includes:

There are also some train services that are more pet-friendly. For instance, on the San Francisco Muni trains in San Francisco , larger dogs that are leashed and muzzled are also permitted on board, outside of peak hours. On the Metro North Railway in New York, dogs up to 65 pounds are permitted onboard.

Scenic tourist trains also tend to be pet-friendly, often allowing small pets in carriers onboard.

I wish Amtrak would allow large dogs as well. Since they already have vehicle cars for transporting people’s cars to Florida, I don’t know why they couldn’t put aside an entire car for people with large pets. But the US is far behind the rest of the developed world on train travel so I guess I won’t expect to see it in my life time.

It would be great if they allowed large pets too! They’ve only been allowing small pets for a couple of years, so fingers crossed. Hopefully by having lots of small pets ride and be well-behaves, helps the case for larger pets, too.

I rode Amtrak a few days ago with my King Charles Cavalier, who had her on ticket. She was in the carrier for four hours, sleeping. When we got near Winona, Wisconsin, the only stop where people can smoke or walk a dog) I took her out to put her jacket and leash. The conductor, Mr. Shorter, came by and said, “ I’m taking you off the train because your dog is out of the carrier.” He actually called the POLICE! I was left in the middle of nowhere, at a depot without an attendant. I had to call a friend who drove 2 hours to pick me up. I guarantee that my dog was sleeping the whole time and I am a calm, elderly woman who has never made trouble, anywhere

Linda – That’s terrible to hear! It’s horrible to hear that the conductor was so strict with the rules, when it should have been clear you were just preparing to walk your dog outside. Have you spoken to Amtrak to complain? I guess for now, it should serve as a warning to leave our dogs in their bag until outside the carriage when stopping.

Hi, I travelled with a 20lb pug on amtrak this week. I found it painful and frustrating. Much like Linda above, it seemed that amtrak trained its employees to be nitpicky about every single possible thing. For example, when we first got on the train, the train was in the sun and quite hot. We opened his carrier to fan him and give him some water. he just had his head poking out, and the conductor had a major issue with it. He was quiet, calm, seated in the carrier under our feet, not bothering a soul. I found this kind of stickler-ness for the rules to be typical. It makes travelling with a dog pretty stressful and not fun. Overall, I wouldn’t do it again. And my dog is pretty good!

(Obviously I understand the need to keep dogs from acting out, being unruly, etc., but I’m mostly looking at the no harm type situation, like the example above, or if you wanted to hold your dog in your lap, assuming it wasn’t bothering your neighbor, etc)

Hi Sampath, I’ve only taken shorter trips on Amtrak, so don’t directly have experience with this. However, I recommend you to speak to the staff on board to find out what are the longer stops, when you can take your dog off the train for a walk, plus to feed or give them water. Otherwise, I recommend feeding and supplying water to your dog inside their carrier, as some other travelers have been treated harshly for even briefly taking their dogs out of their carriers. Do you leave your dog under the seat to use the restroom on Amtrak? Or do you take your dog with you in its crate the the bathroom?

I’ve only travelled with my husband, so we could take turns to use the restroom. Pets shouldn’t be left alone, so either take your pet in its carrier to the restroom, or ask someone else to look after them if you have some friendly fellow passengers.

They need to come up with a way for large dogs to travel on trains….not everyone has a small dog!! Can a person book a cabin and have a large dog? My dog is well behaved, does not bark ever!!

In Europe, it’s quite normal for large dogs to also travel on trains (plus small dogs in carrier bags are usually free). Hopefully the rules will change one day. Small dogs were only initially allowed on trains recently, so I guess it’s just a matter of waiting.

They need to change to rules to all house hold pets. Not everyone has a pet cat or dog. I can understand dangerous “pets.” However rabbits, hamsters and such aren’t dangerous. Yes I did suggest sneaking them in as long no see them and you rid them in a bag or whatever. Large dogs would be hard to sneak in. But yeah large breeds should also be allow.

Since the time limit aboard is no more than 7 hrs and memphis to New Orleans is 9 hrs, can I book from memphis to Greenville MS and then from Greenville to NOLA?

I don’t see why not, as long as they are separate trains and there is a break in between. If you booked two tickets on the same train, without a break in between, I believe there would be an issue when your documents are checked for the second leg.

Do they let your dog go out to go potty. And what happens when your dog is over 20 lbs. Do they still let you get on and charge more. Do you pay for a pet Can you book with a dog more then 8 hours .

There’s no specific break spots to let dogs potty, but if you know the train is stopped for long enough you could do this. Just I would be worried the train might leave without me! I’ve only taken my dog on shorter trips, where I know he’s fine with staying inside, and that’s probably why they have the 7 hour limit.

For larger dogs, they simply don’t allow them onboard. However, our dog wasn’t weighed, although I guess they might do this if they are concerned about the size of the dog. Yes, you pay for a pet’s ticket.

Is there a place to take the dog to the bathroom on board the train?

Sorry, there’s no bathrooms for dogs onboard. The easiest option is to stick to trips short enough so that your dog can comfortably hold on – part of the the reason why there’s a maximum duration enforced. If needed, you could encourage your dog to go on a pee pad in the human bathrooms, or if the train is stopping for awhile, disembark and see if they can go nearby – speak to the train guards about this.

“ Only dogs and cats are allowed to travel as pets”. As in cats and dogs are the only pets. What makes a rabbit or hamster not allow to be on trains? Rabbits are much quieter than dogs. You know what. Screw this dumb rule. If someone wants bring a hamster or bunny they should, but do it sneakily. Rabbits are quiet and rarely make any noise. If the rule is dumb then it shouldn’t be deserve to follow. Oh you get caught unless they check.

Riding the train can be a fun, scenic, and relaxing way to get across the country. Amtrak is the United States’ primary rail provider for passenger travel, and most long-distance rail travel must be done through Amtrak in North America. If you are thinking about taking a long trip on the train with your pet, there are a lot of things you should know before you go. Amtrak has a very detailed pet policy. Amtrak does allow dogs, but they must adhere to all of their rules, and the rules can seem daunting if this is your first time trying to book a ticket for you and your dog.

It is important to note that dogs must weigh less than 20 pounds to ride, so many dogs will be disqualified from riding based on their size alone. This is because Amtrak requires you to put your dog in a carrier under the seat for your trip. Even if your dog is less than 20 pounds, there are many additional things you need to be aware of before you travel.

Here is everything you need to know about riding Amtrak with a dog, including all the rules and some tips to help ensure that your trip goes smoothly.

Amtrak Dog Policy

Before we begin, note that service animals are not considered pets. Service animals are always allowed on Amtrak trains in accordance with the Americans With Disabilities Act.

Reservations

One of the oddities of the Amtrak policy says that there can only be a total of five animals per train. Not five animals per car or per party but five animals per train. That means that animal slots can fill up quickly. If you are planning on traveling with your pet, you should book as far in advance as possible to guarantee yourself a spot on the train with your dog. If a train fills up with pets before you book, they will not allow you to book a ticket for yourself and your animal.

Only one pet is allowed per person.
Reservations with pets are limited to 7 hours of total travel time. That includes transfer time between trains on multiple-segment trips.
Pets are allowed in Coach Class and Acela Business Class.
Pets are not allowed in Acela First Class seating, First Class private rooms, non-Acela Business Class, food service cars, or other accommodations.

Pets will be charged an additional fee per segment. This charge will be tacked on to the price of your ticket. Route fees are either $29 per segment or $39 per segment. Note that not all Amtrak routes and trains allow pets. Check the schedule of fees to see what routes allow pets and to see what the exact fee for your trip will be.

Required Carrier

All pets riding Amtrak must travel in an approved carrier. The carrier can be soft sided or hard sided. The only exception is for service animals that are actively doing a job during the trip. You are not allowed to let your pet out during the trip, which is why Amtrak limits riders to seven hours maximum per trip if you are traveling with a pet.

Maximum carrier dimensions: 19″ long x 14″ wide x 10.5″ high
Maximum weight: 20 pounds (with pet)
Pet carriers count as a single piece of carry-on luggage

Permitted Pets

Not all pets are permitted on Amtrak trains. Amtrak will only allow cats and dogs to ride. Cats and dogs must weigh less than 20 pounds with their carrier to be allowed on the train. The carrier must also fit the size restrictions because it has to fit under the seat during the duration of the trip.

Restrictions

There are numerous restrictions in place when you take Amtrak with your pets. Animals must remain in their carriers at all times when on the train and at the stations. Animals can weigh a maximum of 20 pounds with the carrier included. That means if you have a particularly chunky cat or a dog right on the edge of the weight limit, you should opt for a light carrier.

Pets must remain entirely inside a closed carrier while in stations and onboard trains.
Never leave your animals alone or unattended.
Onboard, place your pet carrier under your seat and not the seat in front of you.

Pet Friendly Routes

If leaving your pet in its carrier under your seat does not sound like the most pleasant train ride, you can look for a pet friendly route. Specific routes have been designed with pets in mind and offer a pet friendly car where animals can be allowed out of their carriers during the trip.

The pet friendly routes are:

Amtrak Cascades
Carl Sandburg
Illinois Zephyr
Lincoln Service
Pere Marquette
Missouri River Runner

Be sure to check with your booking agent to see if your route is pet friendly and if there are available seats for the coach cars where pets are allowed.

Before boarding the train, you must sign a release for your pet for each segment of the ride. If you are boarding at a main station, you should arrive 30 minutes ahead of time so that you can sign and file the paperwork before getting on.

If you are boarding at an unstaffed station, your conductor should be able to verify your paperwork and let you board. You must sign this form before boarding any Amtrak train with your pet.

The Fine Print

Like anything in life, there are some additional rules that you must abide by that are not obvious at first glance. Here are some more regulations that Amtrak has in place regarding pets that you must be aware of before booking your trip.

Pets must be at least 8 weeks old to travel.
Pets must be odorless.
Pets must be harmless.
Pets must not be disruptive.
Pets must require no attention during travel.
Amtrak maintains the right to refuse acceptance and may remove any pet exhibiting these issues from stations or trains.
You certify that your pet is up to date on all vaccinations.
Riders accept liability for their pet by signing the pet release document at check-in.
Amtrak does not accept liability for the health and well-being of pets.

The 6 Tips for a Successful Ride

In order to have the smoothest trip possible, you should follow these tips. There are a lot of rules and regulations about traveling with your pet on Amtrak, and you must follow all of them in order to reach your destination successfully.

Book as early as possible to guarantee a spot on the train for your animal.
Do not try to bring more than one pet to the station; only one will be allowed to board.
Make sure you have a carrier that your animal enjoys riding in ; you might want to do a trial run in the car to make sure they are not noisy or disruptive in the carrier.
Pay your fees, sign the paperwork, and ensure that you booked a pet ticket.
Weigh your pet in its carrier before you go to ensure that it comes in under the 20-pound limit.
Brush up on all of the rules and guidelines before you go so you are not surprised or denied service.

Can You Take A Dog On Amtrak? 7 Rules to Know!

So can you take a dog on Amtrak? You see traveling with a dog can be tough whether you’re using an airline, ferry, train, or bus they all have rules regarding pets.

Now the good news is Amtrak does welcome dogs and other pets on board, but to be sure there are rules you need to follow, which we are going to cover in this article.

So let’s get started…

Dogs Age And Health

Now there are Age and health restrictions you need to be aware of when taking a dog on Amtrak. First, your dog must be at least eight weeks old to be able to board this train.

Your dog cannot be disruptive and must not require any attention while traveling, your dog needs are odorless and not show any kinds of aggression to other passengers.

Second, you must also show documents that your dog is up to date with all vaccinations, you will be required to sign a pet release document at check-in and accept liability for your dog, you need to do this no later than 30 minutes before departure.

Approved Pet Carrier

If you haven’t got one already ‘then’ your need a dog carrier to be able to board Amtrak. The rules say you must transport your dog in an Approved Pet Carrier with the maximum size of 19″ long x 14″ wide x 10.5″ high, and the weight of 20 pounds, including the dog carrier.

Your dog carrier must be leakproof, well ventilated, and have enough room inside the carrier to sit or lie down without touching the sides of the dog carrier. The dog carrier also counts as one carry-on baggage.

Once on board your dog must remain completely inside the carrier when on the train or in the station, the carrier must be placed under your seat, and your dog must be with you at all times.

How Much Does It Cost

To make a reservation on Amtrak for you and your dog all you need to do is visit the Amtrak website or book by phone.

When you do make a reservation this is made on a first-come-first-serve basis, and these reservations are limited to one pet per person with a maximum of five pets per train.

The cost to have your dog travel onboard is $26 or 800 Amtrak Guest Rewards points, Amtrak does advise that you to make your dog reservations in advance and your dog cannot be booked with multi-ride tickets.

Your dog is welcome in the Coach class but is forbidden to travel in First class, Business class, or bedroom accommodations and they are not allowed in any food service cars.

Service Dog On Amtrak

If your taking a Service dog on Amtrak, I have some good news, All Amtrak services welcome service dogs on board, and are granted access in all areas of the train.

Your service dog must always be on a leash or harness unless this is not possible due to a disability. they must sit under the passenger’s seat or your feet. Service dogs are not allowed to sit in the aisle or on any seats or beds.

Identification requirements

When purchasing any tickets on board from the conductors or at check-in, you must provide photo identification to be able to purchase a ticket, and you must be 16 years old or over.

Once you are on board, make sure you have easy access to your photo I.D. Amtrak is known for conducting random checks on board their trains, this is to ensure that passengers have valid tickets.

If you’re unsure what type of I.D Amtrak accepts, here are some examples…

Military photo ID
Job Corps photo ID
State or provincial driver’s license
Canadian provincial health card ID card that has a photo
Student identification university, college or high school photo ID
Official government issued identification or foreign government.

Motion Sickness

It’s always a good idea to prepare for any motion sickness that your dog might experience when traveling on a train, this can happen suddenly and unexpectedly.

So always keep some dog accessories with you to keep your dog as comfortable as possible, make sure you have plenty of bags and wet wipes because you never know when you might need them.

Also your dog can get dehydrated very quickly when traveling for long periods of time so make sure you pack plenty of water and give to your dog when needed.

Where Can You Travel

Amtrak covers more than 30 train routes throughout the U.S, and over 500 destinations in 46 states with some even in Canada. Now If you planning on crossing the border you will need to show certain documents.

This includes your date of birth, your gender, country of citizenship, and detailed information regarding the form of ID that you will take with you on your trip and no passengers under 18 years old can cross the border.

To be granted permission to enter the US or Canada is at the discretion of Customs and Immigration officers. This is where your need to show all the documents for your dog.

Depending on which country you are from your need to show documents like a (CVI) short for a certificate of veterinary inspection, this certificate will be stamped, signed, and given to you by an Official Veterinarian before you left your country.

This certificate shows that your dog is fit to travel and all the vaccinations that your dog has taken are up to date.

Flying with pets? Here's what to know.

Thinking of taking your dog or cat with you the next time you fly? For a growing percentage of the 90.5 million pet owners in the U.S., the answer is yes. But while the notion of boarding a plane with your pet may seem simple, the rules and restrictions around traveling with an animal can be confusing.

Eight major U.S. airlines allow pets to fly in-cabin as carry-ons. But flying with your pet takes research and planning, as pet policies vary from airline to airline, are steeped in restrictions, and are limited to specific countries and cities. You'll also have to pay an extra fee for your pet ranging from $95 to $200, depending on the airline and where you're flying. And restrictions often change.

For example, American Airlines recently revised its policies so passengers flying with pets may also bring one full-size carry-on or personal item. But the carrier prohibits carry-on pets on transatlantic and transpacific flights. Here's what you need to know when considering taking your fur baby with you on a plane.

Cargo, check-in or carry-on?

Most airlines offer three options for transporting animals: cargo, check-in or carry-on. But if your pet is larger than a bread box, your options are limited to the cargo or baggage check-in options, with very few exceptions.

Given that large canine breeds such as Labrador Retrievers, German Shepherds and Golden Retrievers are among the most popular dogs in the country, the size restriction for in-cabin pet travel can be a major frustration for those who would rather not fly at all if that means putting their pet in cargo.

A 2023 Forbes Adviser survey of 10,000 U.S. dog owners found that 33% of respondents fly with their pets, while 37% listed not being able to bring their dog on a plane as their biggest annoyance. Carry-on pets

Even for pet owners whose animals are small enough to fly as a carry-on, traveling is no breeze.

"When I fly with him I have to go to the desk," Margaret Rauch, 44, told CBS MoneyWatch, referring to her 15-pound poodle mix, Soda. The New York City resident has taken Soda on dozens of flights to St. Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands, where Soda, now 4, was being fostered by a friend after being found as a stray puppy in 2021.

In addition to calling the airline in advance to register her dog for a flight, Rauch has to check in at the counter whenever she's traveling with Soda, so the airline agent can confirm her dog and pet carrier conform to the in-cabin pet requirements and that the flight hasn't already met its pet maximum.

Rauch, who said she would never consider putting Soda in cargo, applauded American Airlines' new policy, while noting that in her experience the one carry-on rule was rarely enforced.

"I feel the price is already high for what I get. Even with AA's rule change, I lose the underseat space," she said. "My dog creates no extra work for anyone."

Despite the added preparation, paperwork and hassle involved in flying with Soda — not to mention the unfriendly looks she occasionally detects from fellow passengers at the sight of her pet carrier — Rauch said, "It's absolutely worth it."

Asked how the experience could be improved, she pointed to early boarding for pet owners as something that would help.

"If you can get in early, get a seat and settle down, that is an accommodation I don't expect to see anytime soon but I think it makes sense," Rauch said.

Safety and comfort

For the many Americans who see their pets practically as family members, one of the most challenging aspects of flying is ensuring their animal's comfort and safety.

"The increasing humanization of pets, which involves treating them as part of the family rather than as mere animals, has increased the demand for pet travel services that are of high quality and can be customized to meet the specific needs of each pet," LinkedIn reported in December.

Among other tips, the U.S. Department of Transportation and animal experts recommend that you not feed your pet four to six hours before a flight and limit their water intake. Others also suggest keeping bottled water on hand at all times. Additionally, most airlines require certain vaccination and vet certification that your pet is healthy enough to fly. Individual countries also have their own requirements for pets to enter.

Not surprisingly, some airlines do better than others at handling pets. One of the best-rated carriers for pet travel is Alaska Airlines, which has repeatedly topped rankings, such as NerdWallet's Most pet-friendly airlines of 2024. In recent years, the airline also has maintained one of the industry's lowest incident ratings, according to Veterinarians.org. United Airlines and Delta are among the airlines with the highest incident rates, according to the pet information website.

On Rauch's first plane trip with Soda traveling home to New York, a layover in Miami led to the flight sitting on the tarmac for two hours. Calming treats are something that helps keeps her dog relaxed on flights. She also withholds Soda's food and limits his water intake up to five hours before a flight, which is also helpful given that he doesn't like using pet relief areas, which she said generally smell of urine and can be overwhelming for dogs. Flights between New York City and St. Croix are generally under six hours.

"I'm not sure how I'd handle a flight to Singapore," Rauch said.

Alaska Airlines

Pet fee: $100

Pets allowed: Dogs and cats are the only pets allowed in-cabin on international trips and flights to Hawaii. Domesticated rabbits and small household birds are allowed as carry-on on domestic flights.

Destinations: Domestic and international, with additional requirements and documentation required for pets traveling to Hawaii or internationally .

Good news for pet owners! American Airlines is relaxing its pet policy and allowing those who travel with their animal companions to bring a full-size carry-on too, along with the pet carrier.

"On flights with American you can bring one pet carrier as a carry-on if: You pay the carry-on pet fee; Your pet stays in the pet carrier and under the seat in front of you the entire flight," says American Airline's on their website , adding that passengers can also bring "one additional item on board with your pet," which can be a personal item like a purse or small handbag or a carry-on bag that fits in the overhead bin and meets the airline's requirements .

"Remember, you can only bring one with your pet carrier, not both," says American.

Earlier, travelers with pets were only allowed to bring a small personal item, that could fit under the seat if they were bringing their pet onboard. Anything bigger than that, like a carry-on, was required to be checked for $35. Alternatively, pet owners could put their pet in the cargo hold if they wanted to bring a bigger item with them on the flight.

However, there has been no change in fees required to bring a pet onboard. That remains fixed at $150, as per the American Airline's website. Meanwhile, pet strollers are still required to be checked in and all checked bag fees apply.

American Airlines did not immediately respond to USA TODAY's request for comment and what prompted the relaxation in policy.

Every airline has its own guidelines for traveling with pets and the websites for domestic carriers like Southwest , JetBlue , American , Alaska , United and Delta each spell out what pets can travel where and the requirements for a carrier that can fit under the seat.

There are limitations on the number of pets a passenger can travel with on different aircrafts and travelers are advised to go through the airline policies before making their travel plans and booking tickets.

Similarly, country-based restrictions also apply, and travelers are advised to understand pet-entry requirements for their destination county when traveling abroad.
