Andorra Schengen Visa Explained

Andorra border immigration on the Spanish side of the country

It’s not always easy to get a simple answer on topics regarding Andorra. If you’re looking for info on whether or not you need a Schengen visa to visit or leave Andorra, you’ve found the right place.

Whether you are a tourist looking to visit Andorra for a quick trip or a resident wondering about your rights, we’ll walk you through everything you need to know to make sense of a fairly complex situation.

Table of Contents

The Schengen Area

The Schengen Area consists of 26 European states, 22 of which are EU states. The area allows freedom of travel within its boundaries for tourists and residents alike, and a lack of border control at their mutual borders.

This allows the entire region to operate as a single jurisdiction (as far as travel is concerned), allowing free movement in Europe.

Member states co-operate with each other to ensure security, and are allowed to travel over internal Schengen borders  into another country to catch criminals in the act of committing offences.

At external borders of the Schengen Area however, non-EU nationals need to present a travel document and visa, or a relevant residence permit, along with any supporting documentation for their visit.

Schengen Visas

Entry and travel throughout the Schengen is covered in detail, with examples in this document . Overall, categories are broken down into:

  • Citizens or residents of EU or Schengen member states.
  • Overseas citizens, exempt from needing to obtain a short-stay visa.
  • Overseas citizens, needing to obtain a short-stay visa.

Andorra and the Schengen Area

Andorra has not yet signed on to the Schengen Agreement, meaning it is necessary to pass through border control when travelling into/out of the country, either via Spain or France.

Border controls with both France and Spain are more linked to customs control than immigration. Due to Andorra’s low VAT tax, travellers are often checked to ensure they are not importing greater than allowed quantities of mostly alcohol and tobacco to the Schengen Area.

Andorra began Schengen negotiations in 2015 with the support of Monaco and San Marino, seeking a similar arrangement to that of Lichtenstein.

As it is not possible to fly directly into Andorra, it is necessary to enter the Schengen Area first. This means one must enter the Schengen with an appropriate visa , then enter Andorra. This essentially means Schengen visa rules apply de facto to Andorra.

Tourist Visa for Andorra

Andorra does not require a visa upon entry for visits less than 90 days, however a valid passport or EU identity card must be carried for entry.

While a visa is not required for short-term tourists to enter Andorra, in theory a double or multiple entry visa is required for tourists to leave Andorra and re-enter the Schengen area.

Therefore, without a multiple entry visa it is possible to be denied entry to Andorra (since if you enter and are denied entry back into the Schengen, you are stuck in Andorra).

In Practice

Despite border controls, the likelihood of being stopped and asked for travel documents is rare, but it is worth knowing you could be turned away at the border.

Future Residents to Andorra

Those who are non-EU citizens, planning to become residents in Andorra, either through passive residency, self-employment or on a work permit should consider having a valid multiple entry Schengen visa before beginning their application.

Though there are cases of some (especially passive residents) not needing to show this visa to immigration, it is simple enough to arrange to avoid the risk of a delay in your application.

Residents of Andorra in the Schengen Area

For residents of Andorra not from an EU or Schengen country, there’s good news and bad news.

If you have the right to live or work in Andorra (either via residency or work permit), then you have the same rights as a foreigner with residency in France or Spain.

“The entry and circulation regime in France and Spain for foreigners holding an Andorran residence permit is identical to that applicable to foreigners holding a French or Spanish residence permit.” Decree no. 2003-740

Foreign residents of either Spain or France are allowed unrestricted travel to other Schengen member states for periods up to 90 days. Stays longer than this will likely require a residence permit .

In theory, according to Decree no. 2003-740, foreign residents of Andorra have these same rights.

Many residents of Andorra often enter the Schengen area via Spain and France; more specifically Barcelona and Toulouse. As these countries are familiar with Andorra, entry is not a problem so long as one carries a valid residency permit.

Barcelona passport stamp for the Schengen area

Problems can arise when travelling through countries with immigration officials not familiar with Andorra.

During a recent flight to Canada, I myself was questioned while transiting through Germany. I still made my flight, but if the transit time was any tighter I would have missed it, despite being let through.

Others have experienced similar treatment – it’s rarely about laws and more often about lack of knowledge. Though the outcome is almost always being allowed to continue travelling.

Aside from their passport, many foreign residents carry the following to support their movements:

  • Residency card
  • Copy of a bank statement or onward travel (such as a bus ticket to Andorra in the case of returning home to Andorra)

Some suggest printing a copy of the decree and bringing it with you in case of needing to plead your case in an airport.

Andorra & Schengen Visas: Clear as Mud

Unfortunately for now, this is as clear as it gets. Do know that most people either visiting or residing in Andorra never have any trouble at the borders or when travelling abroad.

With any luck, this article will need a complete review in years to come as future agreements are made!

Entry, Exit and Visa Requirements

Visit Andorra’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs website for the most current travel requirements information.

  • We recommend passports be valid for at least six months beyond your stay.
  • You may enter Andorra through Spain or France under the Schengen Visa Waiver Agreement for a stay of up to 90 days; however, long term visitors should follow the relevant residency regulations and obtain the required Andorra residence card (Note: Andorra does not issue visas).
  • Upon re-entry to the Schengen zone, your passport should have at least 90 days validity after the date of your planned departure from the Schengen zone.
  • If you require a Schengen visa to enter Europe, be sure your visa entitles you to multiple entries to safeguard against being refused re-entry to Spain or France following a stay in Andorra. For further details about travel into and within Schengen countries, please see our website .
  • If you wish to stay in Andorra longer than three months, or to apply for residency, you must provide a criminal record check to Andorran authorities. This may be obtained from the  Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Criminal Justice Information Services office (CJIS) , which you would then send to the Department of State to obtain the required apostille. You can download the FBI form for fingerprint collection (FD-258) directly from the FBI website link:  https://www.fbi.gov/form-fd-258-1.pdf . With this form you can visit the main police station of Andorra: Despatx Central de Policia, Ed. Administratiu de l'Obac, Crta. de l'Obac s/n, Escaldes-Engordany, Principat d'Andorra, Tel: +376-872000, e-mail:  [email protected]  and request that an officer take your fingerprints. This service is available from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Monday through Friday but call ahead to confirm.
  • To prevent international child abduction, many governments have initiated additional procedures at entry/exit points. These often include  requiring documentary evidence of relationship and permission for the child's travel  from the parent(s) or legal guardian not present. Having such documentation on hand, even if not required, may facilitate your entry/departure. (See: Unaccompanied minors travel information from Andorran authorities https://www.exteriors.ad/en/travel-to-andorra ).

The U.S. Department of State is unaware of any HIV/AIDS entry restrictions for visitors to or foreign residents of Andorra.

Safety and Security

Terrorism: Terrorist groups and those inspired by such organizations are intent on conducting attacks worldwide, including within Europe. Terrorists are increasingly using less sophisticated methods of attack – including knives, firearms, and vehicles – to more effectively target crowds. Frequently, their aim is unprotected or vulnerable targets, such as:

  • High-profile public events (sporting contests, political rallies, demonstrations, holiday events, celebratory gatherings, etc.)
  • Hotels, clubs, and restaurants frequented by tourists
  • Places of worship
  • Schools
  • Parks
  • Shopping malls and markets
  • Public transportation systems (including subways, buses, trains, and scheduled commercial flights)

For more information, see our Terrorism page.

Crime: Andorra has a low crime rate. However, since all visitors to Andorra transit through southern France or northeast Spain, it is important to be aware of the type of crime that tourists typically experience in the region. Please refer to country information for Spain and France for additional details.

  • The local equivalent to the “911” emergency line for police, ambulance, or fire in Andorra is 112. Typically, the 112 line has English-speaking operators.

International Financial Scams:  See the  Department of State  and the  FBI   pages for information.

Victims of Crime: Report crimes to the local police at 110 and contact the U.S. Consulate General in Barcelona at + (34) 932-802-227 for assistance. U.S. citizen victims of sexual assault are encouraged to contact the U.S. Consulate General. Remember that local authorities are responsible for investigating and prosecuting crime.

See our webpage on help for U.S. victims of crime overseas .

We can:

  • Help you find appropriate medical care
  • Assist you in reporting a crime to the police
  • Contact relatives or friends with your written consent
  • Provide general information regarding the victim’s role during the local investigation and following its conclusion
  • Provide a list of local attorneys
  • Provide our information on victim’s compensation programs in the U.S.
  • Provide an emergency loan for repatriation to the United States and/or limited medical support in cases of destitution
  • Help you find accommodation and arrange flights home
  • Replace a stolen or lost passport

Domestic Violence: U.S. citizen victims of domestic violence are encouraged to contact the U.S. Consulate General for assistance. Also, call the toll-free emergency number in Andorra, 181, to report domestic violence. For more information, see English language brochure under “Servei d’Atenció a les Víctimes de Violència Domèstica i Familiar (SAVVDF)” at https://www.aferssocials.ad/igualtat .

Tourism: The tourism industry is generally regulated and rules [with regards to best practices and safety inspections] are regularly enforced. Hazardous areas/activities are identified with appropriate signage and professional staff is typically on hand in support of organized activities. In the event of an injury, appropriate medical treatment is widely available throughout the country. Outside of a major metropolitan center, it may take more time for first responders and medical professionals to stabilize a patient and provide life-saving assistance. U.S. citizens are encouraged to purchase medical evacuation insurance .

Local Laws & Special Circumstances

Criminal Penalties: You are subject to local laws. If you violate local laws, even unknowingly, you may be expelled, arrested, or imprisoned. Individuals establishing a business or practicing a profession that requires additional permits or licensing should seek information from the competent local authorities, prior to practicing or operating a business.

  • Penalties for possessing, using, or trafficking in illegal drugs in Andorra are severe. You can expect long jail sentences and heavy fines.
  • Driving under the influence could land you immediately in jail.
  • Your U.S. passport won’t help you avoid arrest or prosecution.

Furthermore, some laws are also prosecutable in the United States, regardless of local law. For examples, see our website on crimes against minors abroad and the Department of Justice website.

Arrest Notification: If you are arrested or detained, ask police or prison officials to notify the U.S. Consulate General immediately. See our webpage for further information.

Counterfeit and Pirated Goods: Although counterfeit and pirated goods are prevalent in many countries, they may still be illegal according to local laws. You may also pay fines or have to give them up if you bring them back to the United States. See the U.S. Department of Justice website for more information.

Faith-Based Travelers: See the following webpages for details:

  • Faith-Based Travel Information
  • International Religious Freedom Report – see country reports

LGBTI Travelers: There are no legal restrictions on same-sex sexual relations or the organization of LGBTI events in Andorra. The LGBTI community in Andorra is not as visible or as politically organized as in neighboring countries. Andorran law prohibits discrimination against LGBTI persons.

  • Andorra allows for civil unions for same-sex couples. According to Andorran law 34/2014, the same sex “civil union” is accorded all of the same benefits as a “marriage” and differs in name only.
  • Andorra recognizes same-sex marriages performed in other countries where it is legal if neither spouse is an Andorran citizen. If one or both spouses are Andorran, the same sex marriage performed elsewhere would be recorded in Andorra’s Civil Registry as a “civil union.”

See our LGBTI Travel Information page and section 6 of our Human Rights report for further details.

Travelers Who Require Accessibility Assistance: Andorran law prohibits discrimination against persons with physical, sensory, intellectual, and mental disabilities in employment, education, access to health care, and the provision of other state services.

  • Persons with disabilities have easy access to public buildings.
  • Andorra ratified the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in March 2014, and the government continues to adapt infrastructure to the needs of disabled persons to ensure accessibility to public transportation, museums, commerce, restaurants, and other buildings throughout the country.
  • Taxis that can accommodate wheelchairs are available but must be called in advance.
  • In some areas, sidewalks can be narrow and very steep. You should take this into account when planning your visit.

Students: See our Students Abroad page and FBI travel tips .

Women Travelers: Andorra’s Ministry of Social Affairs develops programs and campaigns to promote gender equality and to fight and prevent domestic violence and human traffic (see: https://www.aferssocials.ad/igualtat ).

Good medical care is available in Andorra. Regulations regarding medications may vary from those in the United States, however. Andorra relies on the Spanish and French postal systems. As Spanish and French regulations do not permit the international shipment of medication, please do not ship medication from the United States to Andorra as the package will transit through Spain or France and likely be intercepted. U.S. citizens who plan a lengthy trip to Andorra should bring their own medication or obtain a prescription for that medication from a local physician.

The U.S. Consulate General maintains a list of doctors and hospitals . We do not endorse or recommend any specific medical provider or clinic.

For emergency services in Andorra dial 112 .

Ambulance services are widely available.

The U.S. government does not pay medical bills for private U.S. citizens. Be aware that U.S. Medicare/Medicaid does not apply overseas. Most hospitals and doctors overseas do not accept U.S. health insurance.

Medical Insurance: Make sure your health insurance plan provides coverage overseas. Most care providers overseas only accept cash payments. See our webpage for more information on insurance coverage overseas. Visit the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for more information on type of insurance you should consider before you travel overseas.

We strongly recommend supplemental insurance to cover medical evacuation.

Always carry your prescription medication in original packaging, along with your doctor’s prescription. Check with the Andorra’s Health Department to ensure the medication is legal in Andorra.

Vaccinations: Be up-to-date on all vaccinations recommended by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Further health information:

  • World Health Organization
  • U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)

Air Quality: Visit AirNow Department of State for information on air quality at U.S. Embassies and Consulates.

Health facilities in general

  • Adequate health facilities are available in Andorra La Vella but health care in rural areas may be below U.S. standards.
  • Hospitals usually require advance payment or proof of adequate insurance before admitting a patient.
  • Medical staff may speak little or no English.

Medical Tourism and Elective Surgery

  • Medical tourism is a rapidly growing industry. People seeking health care overseas should understand that medical systems operate differently from those in the United States and are not subject to the same rules and regulations. Anyone interested in traveling for medical purposes should consult with their local physician before traveling and visit the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website for more information on Medical Tourism.
  • We strongly recommend supplemental insurance  to cover medical evacuation in the event of unforeseen medical complications.

Pharmaceuticals

  • Exercise caution when purchasing medication overseas. Pharmaceuticals, both over the counter and requiring prescription in the United States, may be readily available for purchase with little controls. Counterfeit medication is common and may prove to be ineffective, the wrong strength, or contain dangerous ingredients. Medication should be purchased in consultation with a medical professional and from reputable establishments.
  • U.S. Customs and Border Protection and the Food and Drug Administration are responsible for rules governing the transport of medication back to the United States. Medication purchased abroad must meet their requirements to be legally brought back into the United States. Medication should be for personal use and must be approved for usage in the United States. Please visit the U.S. Customs and Border Protection and the Food and Drug Administration websites for more information.

Assisted Reproductive Technology and Surrogacy

  • If you are considering traveling to Andorra to have a child through use of assisted reproductive technology (ART), please see our ART and Surrogacy Abroad page .
  • Surrogacy is illegal in Andorra and subject to complex local regulation.

Adventure Travel

Andorra is a skiing and mountain climbing destination and offers adventure travel activities (See: https://visitandorra.com/es/naturaleza/naturaleza-de-aventura/ ). These meet WTO guidelines, and Andorra does not report major incidents in adventure travel activities.

Visit the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website for more information about Adventure Travel .

Travel and Transportation

Road Conditions and Safety: While in Andorra, you may encounter road conditions that differ significantly from those in the United States.

Andorra’s transportation infrastructure is largely road-based. The road network has a length of 167 miles of which 123 are paved. In winter, the main roads are, in general, quickly cleared of snow and remain accessible but storms in the north might cause traffic disruptions.

See our Road Safety page for more information. Visit the website of the Andorra Tourism authority and Andorra’s national authority responsible for road safety .

Traffic Laws:

  • You must carry proof of car insurance and an International Driving Permit while driving.
  • Driving while intoxicated is a very serious offense and carries heavy penalties.
  • The use of front seatbelts is mandatory, as are car seats for infants.
  • Talking on cell phones while driving is prohibited,  except when using a hands-free system.
  • If your car is disabled due to an accident or mechanical issue, you will have to place two red warning triangles on the road, one in front and one behind the vehicle, to alert other drivers.
  • Unlike in the United States, Andorran police authorities may levy and collect fines on the spot and issue a receipt for the payment.

Please refer to our  road safety page  for more information. We also suggest that you visit the Andorra Tourism website for more information.

Public Transportation: Bus service connects all parishes, and there is frequent long-distance bus service to La Seu d’Urgell and Barcelona in Spain and to Toulouse and Perpignan in France.

Car rental agencies in Andorra have offices in most towns. To rent a car, you must be in possession of a valid EU driver’s license or an International Driving Permit and a credit card.

Taxi service is available through the Andorra Association of Interurban Taxi Drivers .

Aviation Safety Oversight: Andorra does not have an international airport. The closest airports in Spain are La Seu d'Urgell,  Barcelona , Lleida, Reus and  Girona . The nearest airports in France are  Toulouse ,  Carcassonne  and Perpignan. Most offer coach or minibus service to Andorra .

Traveling to Andorra: requirements and 9 tips for tourists

Are you going to travel to Andorra soon and you don't know very well how to manage this trip? In this article we will give 7 tips or advice you should keep in mind when visiting this country as a tourist so that the management is as easy and enjoyable as possible and you can enjoy the Principality without too many complications. These tips will be very helpful when planning your trip

Requirements to travel to Andorra

Andorra has agreements with its neighbors Spain and France because you can only enter the country precisely through them. According to these agreements, to enter Andorra a person only needs that documentation that is required to enter Spain or France . So, for example, the requirements to travel to Andorra from Spain are to bring the documentation that has had to be obtained to travel to Spain. Obviously, if you are going to be Andorran resident , more documentation is required but not to travel as a tourist. Thus, the list of requirements would be as follows:

  • Spanish people or people from within the European Union: they only need the ID or valid passport .
  • People from countries outside the European Union and within the Schengen Area: bring the valid passport .
  • People from countries outside the Schengen area: provide the Valid passport and Schengen visa .

Regarding the requirements to travel to Andorra due to the covid, there are currently none . You can travel to Andorra from Spain and from France without any extra requirements. PCR is not needed to travel to Andorra and neither is TMA or other tests.

Travel to Andorra from Barcelona

To travel to Andorra from Barcelona, obviously, there are many options . You can go by taxi, but then prepare your wallet because it's not going to be cheap. You can also look for options in blablacar , since it is usual for people from Andorra to travel to Barcelona and vice versa and it is easy for someone to have a Blablacar service.

But without any doubt the most reasonable and most used option is the bus . In this sense there are two main lines; on the one hand Andorra By Bus , which also allows you to take buses from Toulouse and on the other Directbus , which only Barcelona offers. However, DirectBus offers a stop at Barcelona Sants, Barcelona's train station, while AndorraByBus only has stops at airports.

Finally, there are other bus options such as Alsa buses and also those of Flixbus . All trips are around €30 per person for a one-way ticket and €55 per person for a return ticket.

Travel to Andorra from Madrid

Similarly, to travel to Madrid we can do it with a taxi, although it is not recommended, and we can also search if there is any Blablacar . On the other hand, the company Alsa also offers Madrid-Andorra trips for €52 one way and €98 round trip. However, the best option without a doubt for those who do not want to waste time is to use the newly opened flight from Andorra to Madrid , since for €59 the trip is made from La Seu d'Urgell airport to Madrid and vice versa in one hour.

In any case, we tell you more about how to get to Andorra here .

Travel insurance and healthcare

You'll probably be interested take out travel insurance before coming to Andorra . As we told in our article on the functioning of Andorran healthcare , the European health card does NOT work in Andorra: it is not valid. the principality is not within the European Union and therefore this card is useless.

Therefore and as if that were not enough, when having any urgency tourist taxes apply that is, on Andorran non-residents. And it is necessary to say that ski slope insurance only covers you on the ski slope , not out of it.

Therefore, in addition to request scroll wheel ( E/AND.101 ) in the Spanish Social Security, for example) take out travel insurance it can be very interesting. So you will not have to worry about your health while you are here because you will have full medical insurance as a tourist.

About telephony and mobile internet

Do not enter the country with the foreign mobile internet activated, nor activate it at any time once inside. The strictest recommendation we can give regarding telephony when traveling to Andorra is turn off the phone at the border, before entering the country and turn it on again but without entering the PIN or activate the SIM card. Thus, the mobile will be completely blocked at the telephone level and they will not be able to charge you any absolutely crazy cost.

We make that recommendation because there are telephone companies that charge to receive the call in a foreign country , with which even if you turn off the data or do not answer the calls, they can charge a plus for receiving said call on a foreign network, and return from your trip to Andorra with a disgust.

Only if you are totally sure that this is not your case, it may be advisable not to do the restart, although it is the safest. If this is the case for you and you decide not to restart your phone, the advice is that you must remember not to take any incoming calls and turn off the data of the device before entering the country and not turn them back on that SIM card until you return to the country of origin.

But then how do I connect?

Andorra wifi, free internet, travel to Andorra for tourists

Andorra is a pioneer country in technology and internet connection . The first solution is that you wait to go to your hotel or lodging place, restaurant, etc. where you can access the internet via local WIFI and you can connect, using the local wife of that site.

The second option, but only if it is an emergency is to connect to one of multiple free wife networks that are spread through all the country. For example, the Andorra wifi offered by the Andorran select company, Andorra Telecom, is a free Wi-Fi network that connects the most important points of the country. Also, the libraries and (common) municipalities of Andorra have free Wi-Fi and even some shopping centers such as the River Shopping Center , located in Sant Julia de Lòria, or the same Ill Carlemany .

Use this second option only if it is an emergency and never enter personal or important information such as credit cards, passwords or ID. These networks are not secure.

And finally, if you want to have 4g mobile internet and not rely on WiFis to access the network, one of the tips is to buy a prepaid card for your visit , especially if you are going to travel to Andorra for several days. One option is the famous card Holly or similar with which you can get mobile connection in many countries. Another alternative is to buy a andorra Telecom prepaid internet card with which you will be able to navigate, call and send SMS, although it is better to see the communication rates of the card before carrying out any action.

Andorra and the snow

Don't leave Andorra without having enjoyed the snow , unless your trip is in summer. If you are going to travel to Andorra in non-snow seasons, you should also visit the wonderful Andorran mountainous landscape to discover the whole country. Having three natural parks, one of which is a World Heritage Site, unique lakes and peaks, not making trips to the Andorran mountains is a sin, excuse me.

Andorra in winter is splendid. Going up to a ski resort should be in your travel plans, even if its not for skiing . The Principality is one of the best sites in the Pyrenees for the experience of the mountains and the good snow. You can not only ski, but do all kinds of activities . For this we offer you to go to 3 ski resorts where you can not only ski, so you do not leave here without enjoying the snow.

Grandvalira

Grandvalira  is the largest ski resort in Andorra, and one of the largest in the world. It has 7 different sectors from which to access its tracks and peaks (Encamp, Canillo, Solder, Gray Rig, Ex Tarter, Patrol, Pas de la Casey). With more than 120 slopes and more than 200 km of skiing, this is undoubtedly the great Andorran ski resort. The Grandvalira ski pass is one of the most expensive (although not so much) but it works for all these sectors. It is the definitive option for a great weekend.

Grandvalira is the most common stop for anyone who is going to travel to Andorra. Regarding activities without skiing, in the Grau Roig sector you can do activities such as snowmobiles (€120 for 2 seats) or make an igloo, and in the Palau de Gel de Canillo you can ice skate with a rink that is all the year open, and other activities such as karting, quads etc. This track, in addition, is free for those of the Super 3 Club.

Andorra Vallnord

Although Vallnord it has fewer sectors (Pal, Arousal, Ordino Arcades), it is more affordable than Grandvalira. The price of the ski pass for an adult is €41 and for beginner skiers there is a ski pass for €19.50 that allows you to take the chairlift and conveyor belt for beginners, with the access cable car included. The ski pass for children under 6 years old is free and from 6 to 15 years old it costs €35.

In Pal if you do not like skiing, you can sled on a good track for 5 euros the person with a conveyor belt.

 Naturlandia

In Naturlanda – La Rabassa There is not only a great cross-country ski station and snowshoe routes, but also a park for adventure activities (snowmobiles, zip lines, etc…) with an animal park. If you don't like skiing, this beautiful place is probably the best for you if you are wondering what to see or do on your trip to Andorra.

It is divided into two levels: at the 1600 level is the amusement and adventure park and at the 2000 level is the animal park and the Nordic ski slopes and snowshoes. Cross-country skiing or snowshoeing while watching the animals fully integrated into their habitat in a large forest, a beautiful spectacle! The price of the Nordic ski pass is €12 and that of the animal park €14 for adults.

Be careful with shopping

You can buy a lot of reduced price products , but pay special attention to the amount (in monetary value) of what you buy . Shopping in Andorra can be very affordable, not only because VAT or consumption tax there (IGI) is 4.5% or less , but for the special taxes on tobacco, gasoline, alcohol, etc. But the purchases are not unlimited. One of the tips is nothing to buy perfumes, electronics, tobacco and alcohol for the whole neighborhood.

You have to know that there are  limits on private importation  of these products. Smuggling is a very typical activity when traveling to Andorra, but it is very controlled. If you exceed any of these limits, you will have to declare them at customs and pay a fee or fine that will make your product more expensive than if it were foreign, even being more profitable if they requisition it in some cases.

First, note that  the maximum limit of the value of what you import per person over 16 must be less than €900 . And for each product there is also a different limit:

  • The limit for  alcohol  below 22 degrees is  3 liters
  • For beer is 16 liters
  • At most you can import  300 units of cigarettes
  • In sugar or candy you must carry less than 5 kilos
  • Milk less than 6 liters
  • Coffee you can only 1 kg
  • And some more limits

In addition, you must also know that the total value of what you wear both when entering and leaving (cash and valuables) must be less than €10,000.

Travel to Andorra with children and pets

The first tip to remember is that you must have all the documentation in hand. If you come from countries with which Andorra has an agreement, such as Spain, France or Portugal with the DNI of all people you can enter the Principality . If not, you must have your passport and/or other documentation in order and in force. So if you are traveling with children on board, do not forget that they must have a valid DNI.

Best travel plans to do in Andorra with children

Well, the truth is that when traveling to Andorra you can do almost anything with children: from mountain walks, hiking in nature and routes to lakes to snow sports such as skiing, snowshoeing, or snowmobiling. You can also go to Naturlandia, the Caldea spa... almost all plans can be done with children in Andorra . Even so, we recommend a few that are key:

travel to Andorra with children

  • The  Chaldea Lipids , in the spa of Chaldea , to spend 3 hours in the SPA with your partner alone while the children have fun in an exclusive children spa with monitors and have a great time.
  • The second plan is to got ice-skate in the  ice skating rink of the Paley de Gel in Canillo . A plan that we also remember is free if you have the Super 3 Club cards.
  • Go to ; the two dimensions of Naturlandia  and enjoy its adventure activities, animals and the small snowshoe circuit, charming for everyone. The Naturlandia Animal Park is also a very interesting place to visit, since animals from the area such as deer, wolves, bears or boreal lynxes coexist in semi-freedom. In addition, they have a spectacular Tobotronc through which launching will be the illusion of children in Andorra.
  • Walking among animals and dinosaurs through the  Jerri contemporary gardens located in Sant Julia de Lòria. In these private gardens but whose visit is free of charge, you can find a collection of contemporary art sculptures taken care of by their owner, as well as dinosaurs and many other animals.
  • Climb the Naturlandia Airtrekk, which is the largest adventure activity facility in Europe. It is a wooden structure full of nets, platforms, ropes, zip lines, walkways, etc.
  • You can also do easy hiking trails such as  the Ruth Del ferry , on foot or with snowshoes on a small route where your children will discover everything about the exploitation of the old iron mines or the green ring path .
  • Finally, the museums could not be missing. The Miniature Museum, the Carmen Thyssen Museum, the National Automobile Museum, or the ARTALROC exhibition hall

Travel to Andorra with dogs

If you bring a dog when traveling to Andorra, you must complete certain documentation before visiting the country of the Pyrenees. The  requirements to enter animals in Andorra  is that they have to be over 3 months old, they have to have the animal passport that your veterinarian will make for you, the rabies vaccine up to date and next to it there must be a serology that is negative for animal rabies made by your veterinary. As for activities, if your dog lives in the mountains, obviously almost any plan will delight him.

The chains or contact tires

If you visit the country in winter, make sure that you carry chains or winter contact wheels in your vehicle .

No excuses that if it is a good day, if it is only a moment or that you will not climb much, The Pyrenees climate is very treacherous and can change in a short time and start to snow. On the other hand, on a cold day, nobody assures you of not finding an ice or snow plate on the road. Therefore, never forget the  chains ,  and being able to be 4 , one for each wheel if you go to Andorra by motor home or 2 minimum if you go by car.

In addition, in 2015 a modification of the Andorra Traffic Code entered into force, in which it  forces  to bring adequate equipment (chains or tires adapted) to all vehicles that circulate on the roads and streets of the small country of the Pyrenees. The obligation begins each season on  November 1st , and finish the  May 15th of the following year

Normally the  andorra police  fine only when in case of snowfall or ice on the road (although you can do it at any time within that mandatory period), a vehicle gets stuck hindering the movement.

The amount of the penalty goes from  180 euros  at 500 euros in the case of vehicles of more than 3.5 tons. And to avoid it, the vehicle must be equipped with winter tires or with metal or cloth chains, which are suitable for the dimensions of the wheels. At a minimum they must be carried on the tractor wheels. The measure affects both Andorran residents vehicles and  no residents ones .

One last point

Finally we remember and recommend contact us if they want to settle in Andorra, move to this country, open your company in Andorra o reside and live in Andorra . You can make it pressing here . They can also see the all general advantages offered by the Principality of the Pyrenees .

Andorra Schengen

Traveling to Andorra doesn’t require a Schengen visa, but there’s a twist. You’ll pass through either Spain or France to get there, both Schengen countries. This means you need to understand the nuances of Schengen rules before packing your bags. AndorraPartner will be your guide through the ins and outs of Andorra’s connection with the Schengen Zone. Whether you’re a seasoned traveler or planning your first European adventure, knowing these details can make or break your trip. Let’s dive into the fascinating world of Andorra and its place beside the Schengen Agreement.

What is the Schengen Zone?

When planning a trip to Andorra, it’s crucial to grasp the concept of the Schengen Zone. So, what exactly is it? The Schengen Zone refers to a region comprising 26 European countries that have abolished passport and all other types of border control at their mutual borders. This area functions as a single jurisdiction for international travel purposes, with a common visa policy. It’s named after the Schengen Agreement, which was signed in 1985 in the small Luxembourgish village of Schengen.

For travelers, the Schengen Zone means freedom to move across member countries without undergoing border checks at every crossing. However, the notion of unhampered travel comes with stringent entry requirements. Upon initial entry into the Schengen Zone, visitors are subject to immigration scrutiny, after which they can travel comprehensively with ease.

The signatory countries have different regulations regarding how long a tourist can stay. Typically, one can spend 90 days within any 180-day period in the Schengen Area without the need for a visa for short stays. Below is a breakdown of this 90/180 rule which is central to understanding travel within the Schengen Zone:

  • Duration of Stay: 90 days.
  • Reference Period: Within any 180-day period.
  • Visa Requirement: Not required for short stays.

This rule applies uniformly across all Schengen countries, reinforcing the value of seamless travel within these borders. But remember, just because you’re in the Schengen Area doesn’t mean the rules can’t change at the borders of certain countries due to temporary controls or policy shifts.

It’s also key to understand that not all EU or EFTA countries are members of the Schengen Zone and vice versa. Some countries like Andorra, Romania, Bulgaria, Croatia , and Cyprus are not part of this Zone; conversely, non-EU countries like Norway, Iceland, Switzerland , and Liechtenstein are. This diverse membership contributes to the complex travel landscape in Europe, especially for unique cases like Andorra, which although not part of the Schengen Zone, is surrounded by countries that are.

The Unique Position of Andorra

Nested amongst the majestic Pyrenees mountains, Andorra presents a blend of allure and complexity for international travelers. Despite its location in the heart of Europe, it stands out as an unusual case since it’s neither a member of the European Union nor the Schengen Zone. Yet the way it’s sandwiched between France and Spain, two prominent Schengen member states, gives it a peculiar status that demands attention.

Traveling to Andorra involves passing through either French or Spanish borders. Important to note , both countries fully implement Schengen rules, which requires me to undergo the necessary Schengen border checks. However, once you’re within Andorra’s borders, you are not subject to further border control, implying a sort of informal association with the Schengen region.

Here’s a key aspect we always underscore: because Andorra has no airport , the usual port of entry is through neighboring countries’ transportation hubs. So whether you are landing in Toulouse or Barcelona, you are effectively stepping onto Schengen soil. It mandates that my documentation complies with Schengen criteria, even though my ultimate destination is outside the zone.

Another notable point is Andorra’s visa policy. Although it isn’t part of Schengen, it honors Schengen visas. This policy simplifies things for tourists who want to include Andorra in their European itinerary. Likewise, any traveler holding a multi-entry Schengen visa can enter and leave Andorra during their trip without needing an additional visa.

When it comes to understanding Andorra’s position in regard to the Schengen Zone, it’s essential to grasp these nuances. We always remind our readers to ensure their documents are up to par and to plan their entry and exit points with care, aware of the layered travel implications. Visiting Andorra may not require extra paperwork for those already cleared for Schengen travel, but it does require a good grasp of this small country’s unique place on the European stage.

Andorra’s Relationship with the Schengen Zone

Andorra’s unique location in Europe has fostered a distinctive bond with the Schengen Zone. Despite its non-member status, there’s a mutual understanding that benefits travelers and the principality alike. What’s especially interesting is how Andorra has struck a balance between maintaining its sovereignty and facilitating travel across European borders.

Andorra’s bilateral agreements allow Schengen visa holders to enter without extra paperwork. This streamlined process is a boon for tourists and simplifies my trips to the region. However, these agreements also require some homework: travelers must double-check their visas to ensure multi-entry access since a departure from Schengen to Andorra technically counts as exiting the zone.

Traveling to Andorra, we find the absence of border checkpoints within the country both surprising and refreshing. Despite this open-border policy, it’s crucial to acknowledge that any re-entry into France or Spain invokes standard Schengen procedures. As such, we always advise carrying your passport and supporting documents when traversing these borders.

The intricacies of Andorra’s relationship with the Schengen Area can be confusing. For instance, there’s no formal Schengen affiliation but the de facto treatment of Schengen rules when it comes to tourism conveys a sense of partnership that’s undeniable. It’s my observation that the smooth cooperation between Andorra and surrounding countries straddles an interesting line—offering a case study in how a microstate adeptly negotiates international travel norms while holding on to its autonomy.

How to Travel to Andorra

Traveling to the quaint principality tucked in the Pyrenees isn’t as straightforward as hopping on a direct flight. Andorra lacks an airport , so visitors typically fly into neighboring France or Spain and drive or take a bus. Most international travelers land in Barcelona or Toulouse, which are around a three-hour drive to Andorra.

If you’re coming from Barcelona, bus services like Andbus or Andorra Direct Bus operate frequently and offer a comfortable ride. Alternatively, renting a car allows for a scenic drive and flexibility once you’re in Andorra. In contrast, Toulouse is a popular entry point for those coming from the north, with similar bus services and car rental options available.

Getting Your Paperwork in Order

Before starting your journey, it’s vital to ensure your travel documents are up to date . While you don’t need a specific visa to enter Andorra, your multi-entry Schengen visa must be valid to re-enter France or Spain after your visit. Here’s what you need to check:

  • Multi-entry Schengen visa validity
  • Passport expiration date (at least 6 months before expiry)
  • Entry and exit stamps to avoid overstaying in the Schengen Area

Remember, even though border formalities are straightforward, carrying the correct documentation is always essential.

Navigating Border Crossings

While border checks may be non-existent when entering or leaving Andorra, you’ll still encounter them when re-entering France or Spain. Let’s make sure you’re prepared:

  • Keep your ID and travel documents accessible
  • Be aware of the items you’re carrying (Andorra has duty-free status but there are limits to what you can bring back)
  • Understand that customs checks can occur, especially for large quantities of goods

Andorra’s allure isn’t just in its picturesque landscapes or its tax-free shopping—it’s also in its unique position in European geopolitics. Traveling here offers a glimpse into a nation that deftly walks the line between seclusion and openness, a trait evident in its approach to international visitors.

Understanding Schengen Rules

Navigating the Schengen Zone’s regulations is crucial for seamless travel across Europe, and knowing the rules can save you a lot of hassle . The Schengen Area is a group of 26 European countries that have abolished passport and all other types of border control at their mutual borders. This arrangement creates a territory without internal borders which allows for unrestricted movement of people, in theory. However, there are still rules to be followed, particularly for non-EU citizens.

My travels have taught me that the Schengen Zone allows for short stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period for tourists and business visitors. It’s essential to keep track of your stays; overstaying can lead to fines or bans from the Area. It’s not just about counting the days; it’s about understanding how they accrue. Here’s a crucial piece of advice: the 180-day period keeps rolling, so always count backward from your current date to ensure you’re within the limits.

For those who need to stay longer, different types of visas are available, such as the national long-stay visas (D-visas) or residence permits. But remember, these are country-specific and won’t necessarily allow you to travel to other Schengen countries without additional authorization.

Here’s a quick breakdown of Schengen Visa types:

  • Type A: Airport Transit Visa
  • Type C: Short-term Visa
  • Type D: National Long-term Visa

Keep in mind that not all Schengen countries are EU members , and not all EU countries are part of the Schengen Area, like Ireland. This can influence your travel plans, so double-check the list of Schengen countries before your trip.

Even when you’re in the clear with Schengen rules, local laws can throw you a curveball. For example, driving from Spain to Andorra is usually straightforward, but there are instances when France or Spain reinstates temporary border controls due to events such as political summits or security threats. Always stay updated with the latest travel advisories from your home country and the countries you plan to visit.

When planning your journey through the Schengen Area, including Andorra, it’s wise to have copies of your travel insurance, flight itinerary, and hotel bookings at hand. These documents may be requested at any point during your trip and are vital in proving the legitimacy of your travel.

Latest update: 5th October 2022:

Latest update: 5th october 2022, new page passive residency changes update 04/10, andorra and schengen explained. is andorra in the eu, is andorra in the eu, can i stamp my passport when i enter andorra to extend my 90 days allowed.

Technically yes, realistically it depends on who is on duty at the border and whether they can be bothered to find the stamp. Andorra has random border checks and tourist "Immigration stamp collectors" looking for that souvenir can get a tourist stamp BUT this is undated. To get an officially dated exit stamp from Spain and then an entry at the Andorra side is not guranteed at all. I do know persons have been successful and I know some who have not been so lucky.  If you are entering by bus then  the chances are far higher to be checked than by private or hire car, and also by entering on the bus it is far more unlikely that they will wait for you while you chase the officials for that stamp !!

Schengen Andorra

So what does the actual law say on Schengen ?

Just how do i get an andorran passport .

can i travel to andorra with schengen visa

If you are a tourist who wants to visit Andorra either for a quick trip or to reside in the Principality, you need to know some somewhat complex policies to be able to move to Andorra successfully.

The Schengen Agreement

This is based on a treaty between several countries to minimize border controls, but safely. The Schenge space is made up of European Union countries: Germany, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Slovenia, Spain, Estonia, Finland, France, Greece, Holland, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Norway , Poland, Portugal, Czech Republic, Slovak Republic, Sweden and Switzerland. With this border control, it allows the entire region to function as a single jurisdiction, with respect to travel, resulting in free movement in Europe.

In this way the member states cooperate with each other to ensure the safety of all those who circulate within the Schengen territory, and allowing members of the Schengen area to catch people committing illegal acts within their limits.

However, at the border of the Schengen area, non-EU visitors must present their visa and travel documentation, or otherwise the relevant residence permit, together with any other supporting documentation.

Schengen visa to visit Andorra

Andorra has so far not signed the Schengen Agreement, which means that it is necessary to go through border control when traveling to the country, whether through France or Spain.

Andorra has conducted Schengen negotiations in 2015 with the support of Monaco and San Marino, seeking an agreement similar to that of Lichtenstein to enter the Schengen Agreement and be part of the countries that comprise it.

The border controls that France and Spain apply to Andorra are mostly linked to customs control rather than immigration. Due to the low VAT tax in the Andorran Principality, travelers are often checked to ensure that they are not importing alcoholic beverages and tobacco in excess of the amounts allowed in the Schengen Area.

As it is not possible to have a direct flight to Andorra, it is first mandatory to enter the Schengen Area. Once in the territory, you must enter with the Schengen visa and then enter the Principality. This means that the Schengen visa rules apply, in part, to enter Andorran territory.

The Schengen Visa

Entrance and travel throughout the Schengen area are covered in important detail, but, in general, the categories are divided into:

  • Citizens or residents of the states belonging to the EU or Schengen.
  • Foreign persons free of the need to acquire a short-stay visa.
  • Foreign citizens with the need to obtain a short-stay visa.

Tourist visa to enter Andorra

The Principality does not require a visa to allow visitors to enter for less than 90 days, however, they must carry the European Union identity card for entry or a valid passport.

Although a visa is not required for short-term visitors to enter the Principality, they will need a double or multiple entry visa for tourists to leave Andorra and be able to enter the Schengen area again.

In view of this, without a double-entry visa, you can be refused entry to the Principality, since if you enter and are denied entry again to the Schengen area.

Consequently, a person without a multiple entry visa may be refused entry to Andorra because if he is admitted and denied entry again to Schengen, he would be trapped in the Andorran Principality.

Future citizens of Andorra

For those people who are not from the EU but have plans to become residents of Andorra, they should consider having a Schengen visa with a valid multiple entry to apply for Andorran nationality either through passive residence, with a work permit or by self-employment

Although there have been cases, most commonly with passive residents, they do not need to show a visa to immigration agencies when they travel.

Andorran citizens in the Schengen area

For Andorra citizens who do not belong to a European Union or Schengen country, there is positive and negative news.

The resident has the right to live or work in Andorra, with a residence or work permit, and has the same rights as a foreigner residing in France or Spain, according to Decree no. 2003-740 which dictates: “The entry and circulation system in Spain and France for foreigners with an Andorran residence permit is identical to that applicable to foreigners with a Spanish or French residence permit.”

Basically, foreign residents of France or Spain can move without limitations throughout the Schengen territory for periods of less than 90 days. If a longer stay is required, a residence permit will be required. And as dictated by Decree no. 2003-740, foreign residents of Andorra have these same rights.

Although in practice, many residents of Andorra frequently enter the Schengen territory through Spain and France, and since these countries are already familiar with the Principality, entry does not mean any problem as long as the citizen has a valid residence permit.

Although it is rare, there have been cases in which some problems may arise such as immigration officials are not familiar with Andorra or, in remote cases, due to lack of knowledge of the laws. Whatever the case, it usually resolves quickly and the result allows the citizen to continue their journey.

The advisable thing to avoid some type of inconvenience is that the foreign residents carry in their passport some types of documents to support their movements. These documents can be the residence card or the copy of a subsequent travel ticket (in case of returning to Andorra).

Keep in mind that the majority of citizens who reside or visit Andorra, usually never have border problems or when traveling abroad, but it is also noteworthy to mention that the laws are changing and should be kept updated of them.

Well, this tiny country is not a member of the European Union or the Schengen Area, but it has unique arrangements that travelers need to be mindful of. To enter Andorra, you’ll pass through either Spain or France, so you’ll need a multi-entry Schengen visa which allows you to enter, exit, and re-enter the Schengen area, which is essential since Andorra is only accessible via these two countries.

If you are a citizen of a country that is not visa-exempt for the Schengen Zone, you’ll need to apply for a Schengen visa ahead of your trip. Check your particular requirements at the official Schengen Visa Info website, or consult with the nearest French or Spanish consulate or embassy for the most accurate guidance.

The Schengen Visa Application Process Applying for a Schengen visa involves several steps, but don’t let that discourage you. Here’s a simplified guide to the process:

  • Identify your main destination. The Schengen visa should be obtained from the consulate of the country where you’ll spend the most time or where you will enter the Schengen Area.
  • Set up an appointment with the appropriate consulate or embassy. Plan well in advance, as slots fill up quickly, especially during peak travel seasons.
  • Prepare the necessary documents. Typically, you’ll need a passport with at least two blank pages and 3-6 months validity beyond your planned stay, travel insurance, a completed application form, biometric photos, proof of accommodation, a detailed itinerary, and evidence of financial means.
  • Attend the visa interview. Be prompt, courteous, and prepared to answer questions regarding your trip and background.

The cost of a Schengen visa application generally falls around €80 for adults and €40 for children aged 6-12, but these fees are subject to change, so it’s always wise to verify the current rates.

Additional Tips for Smooth Travel to Andorra Remember, having a Schengen visa does not guarantee entry, as the final decision rests with the border officials. To improve your chances of a hassle-free journey, consider these tips:

Andorra and the Schengen Area

Schengen Area Andorra Border Crossing

As you probably know, Andorra sits right on the border between France and Spain, however it is neither in the EU nor in the Schengen Area. So this poses the great questions of what happens when you cross the border, and do you need to get your passport stamped.

What is the Schengen Area?

The Schengen Area is an area made up of 26 European countries without internal border controls and with a common visa policy, so that travellers have freedom of movement within the area. To enter the Schengen Zone you need a Schengen Visa, or some countries, like the UK, have a Schengen Visa Waiver. The Visa or Visa Waiver allow you to spend 90 days out of 180 within the Schengen Zone.

Is Andorra in the Schengen Area?

No. Despite being on the border between Spain and France, and enjoying free movement between the countries, Andorra remains fully independent and is not a member of the Schengen Area. As you’ll need to travel via either France or Spain, first of all you’ll need to make sure you’re allowed into the Schengen Zone, so depending on your nationality you may be required to have a Schengen Visa.

But not all Schengen Visas are the same! If you have just a single entry visa then you cannot use this to travel to Andorra, because you’ll be leaving the Area and then re-entering when your trip finishes. So this means you must have a double or multiple-entry Schengen Visa (or Visa Waiver) if you intend to travel to Andorra.

Do I have to stop at the border with Andorra?

No, not unless you are told to. There are only two border crossings, one at either side of the country – at each border crossing you will find two sets of border police, the police for France or Spain (depending where you are), and the police for Andorra. The border is an open one, which means you don’t have to stop unless you’re told to, and most of the time it is free flowing.

How area my 90 days from 180 counted?

You’ll get your passport stamped when you enter the Schengen Area, which will have the date you entered, eg. when you fly from the UK to Barcelona or Toulouse. When you leave the Schengen Zone you’ll get another stamp in your passport showing the date you left. As an example, if you’re travelling from the UK on a British passport and land in Barcelona on a Saturday, then fly home again the following Saturday, this would be eight days from your allowance.

Does my time in Andorra count towards my 90 days in the Schengen Area?

No. But maybe! For most people, 90 days in the Schengen Zone every six months is plenty, so there’s no actual requirement to get “stamped out” when you cross the border into Andorra (leaving the Area) and “stamped in” going home when you cross the border (back into the Area). However this means that officially you will have spent those days in the Schengen Area and will be used from your allowance.

The 90 days from 180 in the Schengen Zone are counted when you officially enter or leave the Area, so if you need to be careful about the number of days you use up, such as if you are a regular traveller for your job, then you’ll need to make sure you stop at the border to get your passport stamped.

Passport Stamps La Seu

How do I get my passport stamped to leave the Schengen Zone?

To get your passport stamped just stop at the French or Spanish border crossing and ask to be stamped out of the Schengen Area. It is a very common thing to happen, so the border guards will know exactly what you’re wanting.

If you’re arriving/leaving on a private or a shared transfer, just let your driver know well in advance that you need to stop at the border and it’s no problem to do this.

However, if you get your passport stampted to leave the Area on the way in to Andorra, make sure you do the same leaving Andorra to get stamped back in to the Area, otherwise you may run into issues when you next pass through a border crossing.

Going back to the previous example, if you arrive on a Saturday and go home the following Saturday, but you get yourself stamped out/back in as you cross the border you’ll only be using two days of your allowance rather than eight days.

Important note: it’s the French or Spanish police who will stamp your passport and not the Andorran police. When you arrive at the border this means it’s the first set of poice you’ll come to.

Will I get a passport stamp going into Andorra?

Only if you ask. As a rule you won’t get your passport stamped coming into Andorra, however if you stop and ask then the border guards will stamp your passport on entry. You cannot get your passport stamped at the tourist office.

No visa of any type is required to enter Andorra. Our country, however, has a very special geographical location in Europe. Andorra neither belongs to the European Union nor is in the Schengen Area. We therefore uphold agreements on the movement of people with neighbouring countries. To enter the Principality, you will therefore not experience any additional problems. Find out what documentation is required at the border and at customs controls and what you need to bring for pets.

Entry documentation If you are a European Union citizen, you do not need a visa to enter. Transit agreements with Spain and France mean that, in practice, people arriving from any European state will not be subject to any special procedure. A passport or national ID card is sufficient to enter or to leave Andorra. If you are a citizen of a country that does not belong to the EU but is in the Schengen Area, you must bring a valid passport. If you are a citizen of a non-EU country, you must bring your passport and, given that access to Andorra is through France or Spain, you should find out at the French or Spanish embassies or consulates in the country you are from whether you need a visa to access the Schengen Area and, if so, how to go about the corresponding application. When necessary, you will need to apply for a two or multiple-entry Schengen visa, depending on your travel plans, so you can leave and re-enter the Schengen Area trouble-free.

EU CITIZENS

To travel to Andorra with your pet (dog, cat or ferret), make sure it meets the following requirements:

  • It should be identified with a clearly legible microchip or tattoo which was applied before 3 July 2011.

  • You must have the pet passport when the animal comes from a member state of the European Union, Switzerland, the Faroe Islands, Gibraltar, Greenland, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Monaco, San Marino or the Holy See.
  • Have an official veterinary health certificate when they come from a country other than the ones previously mentioned.

Please also note that any person who wants to enter the country with wild animals that are native and non-native fauna (or parts of these animals), they must apply for authorisation through the request relating to specimens/products of native/non-native fauna with the Government Procedures Service and address this request to the Department of Environment and Sustainability. Depending on the animal species, it will be necessary to attach the specific documentation detailed in the Regulations relating to the conditions of transport, import and export of wild animals.

Vaccination requirements (other than COVID-19)

At least 8 weeks before your trip, check the vaccinations and certificates you need in TravelHealthPro’s Andorra guide .

All About the Visa for Andorra

Andorra is a tiny country sandwiched between Spain and France in the Pyrenees, with sweeping mountainous landscapes. In winter, it’s a popular skiing destination, while the rest of the year it attracts avid hikers.

Andorra has no entry requirements for visitors. However, you cannot reach it without travelling through Spain or France. This means that, if you are a citizen of a country within the Schengen zone, you won’t need to get any sort of permit, and you can enter Andorra freely.

On the other hand, if you’re from a non-Schengen country, then depending on your nationality, you will need to get either an ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorisation System) visa waiver or a Schengen Visa to enter. See the next section of this page for more details on these entry documents.

Anyone visiting Andorra for tourism purposes can stay for up to 3 months, after which you would need to apply for a work or resident permit if you wish to stay longer. Read on to learn more!

What Is the Difference Between an Andorra ETIAS Visa Waiver vs Schengen Visa?

The ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorisation System) is a new visa waiver system that will be introduced in 2022/3. Much like the American ESTA and the Canadian eTA, it’s a simple online document for all countries that either aren’t Schengen Member States or don’t require a Schengen Visa.

With an ETIAS you will be able to visit any of the 26 countries of the Schengen zone for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. The ETIAS is a Multiple-Entry document, so can travel in and out of Andorra freely. What’s more, it’s valid for 3 years, which means you can return time and again on the same document.

By comparison, the Schengen Visa needs to be acquired from an embassy or consulate. The document will be stamped into your passport. Just like the visa waiver, these are valid for stays of up to 90 days in a 180-day period. However, in this case you can choose between 3 types of Multiple-Entry travel documents, valid for either 1, 3 or 5 years. If it’s the first time you are travelling to the Schengen zone, you will be granted a 1-year visa.

Andorra Visa Requirements and Eligibility

To enter Andorra, you will only need to show a passport or European Union ID card. However, as we mentioned above, since there are no commercial flight airports in the country, you will need to enter by land from either Spain or France. Therefore, you must take into account the entry policies for these countries if you wish to visit Andorra.

The Schengen zone is a union of 26 European countries (with more in the process of joining) which allows freedom of movement within the area without stops or checks when you cross a border. The great thing about this is that, once you have your Multiple-Entry Schengen Visa or ETIAS, you will be able to visit any country within the Union.

Countries in the Schengen Zone and EU

The following countries are part of both the Schengen zone and the EU, which means their citizens can visit Andorra by simply showing their passport or European ID card:

Austria Belgium Czechia Denmark Estonia Finland France Germany

Greece Hungary Italy Latvia Lithuania Luxembourg Malta Netherlands

Poland Portugal Slovakia Slovenia Spain Sweden

Countries Only in the Schengen Zone

The following countries are part of the Schengen zone, but are not part of the EU, which means they can visit Andorra by showing their passport:

  • Liechtenstein
  • Switzerland

Countries that are not part of the Schengen zone or the European Union will either need an ETIAs or a Schengen Visa. Below you will find all the countries that fall under these 2 categories.

Countries Eligible for the ETIAS:

Albania Antigua and Barbuda Argentina Australia Bahamas Barbados Bosnia and Herzegovina Brazil Brunei Darussalam Canada Chile Colombia Costa Rica Dominica El Salvador Federated States of Micronesia Georgia Grenada Guatemala Honduras

Hong Kong Israel Japan Kiribati Macau North Macedonia Malaysia Marshall Islands Mauritius Mexico Moldova Montenegro Naura New Zealand Nicaragua Palau Panama Paraguay Peru Saint Kitts and Nevis

Saint Lucia Saint Vincent and the Grenadines Samoa Serbia Seychelles Singapore Solomon Islands South Korea Taiwan Timor-Leste Tonga Trinidad and Tobago Tuvalu Ukraine United Arab Emirates United Kingdom United States Uruguay Vanuatu Venezuela

Countries Eligible for the Schengen Visa:

Afghanistan Algeria Angola Armenia Azerbaijan Bahrain Bangladesh Belarus Belize Benin Bhutan Bolivia Botswana Burkina Faso Burundi Cambodia Cameroon Cape Verde Central African Republic Chad China Comoros Congo Côte d’Ivoire Cuba DR of Congo Djibouti Dominican Republic Ecuador Egypt Equatorial Guinea Eritrea Ethiopia Fiji Gabon

The Gambia Ghana Guinea Guinea-Bissau Guyana Haiti India Indonesia Iran Iraq Jamaica Jordan Kazakhstan Kenya Kosovo Kuwait Kyrgyzstan Laos Lebanon Lesotho Liberia Libya Madagascar Malawi Maldives Mali Mauritania Mongolia Morocco Mozambique Namibia Nepal Nigeria North Korea Northern Marianas

Oman Pakistan Papua New Guinea Philippines Qatar Russia Rwanda São Tomé and Príncipe audi Arabia Senegal Sierra Leone Somalia South Africa Sri Lanka Sudan Suriname Swaziland Syria Tajikistan Tanzania Thailand Timor-Leste Togo Tonga Tunisia Turkey Turkmenistan Uganda Uzbekistan Vietnam Yemen Zambia Zimbabwe

No matter which travel document you require, your passport must be valid for at least 3 months from your departure date from the Schengen zone.

Also, it’s essential that your entry document allows Multiple Entries, as you will need to use it when you leave and re-enter the Schengen zone from Spain or France.

Andorra Visa Application Process

The application process is different for the ETIAS and the Schengen Visa, so below we have outlined each process step by step to help you navigate both systems.

The great thing about the new ETIAS system is that it’s quick and easy to apply since you can do the whole process online without needing to visit an embassy. Byevisa can take care of the whole process for you.

All you need to do is follow these simple steps, and we will send your travel document directly to your email inbox:

  • At the top of this page, select your nationality in the first box and either Spain or France in the second box. Then select ‘Get Visa Info’. It will tell you if you are eligible for an ETIAS, how much the government and the processing fees are as well as the processing time.

Simple as that! Once your document has been approved, we will send it directly to you.

Schengen Visa

To be granted a Schengen travel document, you will need to visit the embassy or consulate of the country you will be entering the Schengen zone from. For Andorra, it will likely be France or Spain, unless you plan on visiting other countries beforehand. No matter which embassy you end up applying with, they will all follow this process:

  • Make an appointment.
  • Fill out the application form and gather the required supporting documents (see section below).
  • Bring all the documents to the embassy appointment along with your passport.
  • Pay the processing fee.
  • The travel authorisation will be stamped into your passport, which you will need to collect from the embassy. Alternatively, it may be posted to you.

In most cases the application is processed in 15 days. You should apply for the visa between 6 months and 3 weeks prior to your departure date.

Therefore, citizens of the European Union, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, and Liechtenstein do not need a visa to enter Andorra and can stay up to 90 days within 180 days. However, citizens of other countries need a Schengen visa to enter Andorra.

As of 2024, a new travel authorization called ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorization System) will be introduced for citizens of visa-exempt countries, including the United States. Andorra is an EU microstate. Thus, third-country passport holders will only technically need an ETIAS to enter Andorra. However, since Andorra is landlocked between France and Spain, these travelers will need an ETIAS or Schengen Visa to enter either of those countries en route to Andorra.

Therefore, US citizens traveling to Andorra will need an ETIAS authorization starting in 2024, while citizens of the EU and associated countries will continue to enjoy visa-free travel. It is always recommended to check the latest entry requirements before planning a trip to Andorra.

It's important to note that the ETIAS is not a visa but a travel authorization valid for three years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first.

US citizens must have a valid passport, email address, and credit or debit card to complete the online application. The ETIAS can be obtained in as little as 10 minutes. For more information on the ETIAS, please visit our ETIAS section .
