Get to Know Carnival Freedom

Carnival Freedom has a message for you, and its "feel free to have fun!" Explore the ship and you'll find food options galore, starting with two dining rooms, but definitely extending outdoors — there's mouth-watering Guy Fieri burgers at Guy's Burger Joint ™ , plus the greatest tacos and burritos this side of the pier at BlueIguana Cantina ™ . For delicious, but quick and easy, selections from the sea, get your chopsticks around all the good stuff at Bonsai Sushi Express ™ . For every great food spot, there's a great place to enjoy drinks, too, from the toe-tapping Scott's Piano Bar to the always-hoppin' 70's Nightclub. For the thirsty, libation hotspots include Alchemy Bar ® and the place we all gather to raise very important toasts: Heroes Tribute ™ Bar & Lounge. Everybody's favorite outdoor seaside bar is here... whether yours is the RedFrog Rum Bar ® or BlueIguana Tequila Bar ™ . (Or hey, make it both!) The rum bar's older brother, RedFrog Pub ® , features drinks, live music and traditional pub games. Topping off adult-time is Serenity — adult-only, of course — the retreat where total relaxation is not only encouraged, but pretty much required. If you're a kid, Carnival Freedom means you're in for a treat. Not only will you find new friends at one of three youth spaces — like Camp Ocean ® — but you can splash around with them in one of our many pools, speed down a waterslide at Carnival WaterWorks ™ , or once you dry off, challenge them to a round of mini-golf. Oh, and adults — don't get jealous; your inner kid gets to do all this stuff too! Up on stage is Playlist Productions ™ , featuring songs you know... and dance moves you'll soon be using. And for the cherry on top... it's actually called Cherry On Top ™ . It's the spot for something special, whether that something's a little something sweet — or simply a little something to sweeten a special occasion.

15+ Hotels With Cruise Shuttles Between Orlando and Port Canaveral

If you are flying into Orlando for a cruise from Port Canaveral, then you are going to need to figure out how to get to your ship. The port is about 45 minutes away from the Orlando International Airport (MCO), which is the closest major airport to the cruise terminals.

Cruise ship docked at Port Canaveral

The good news is that as one of the busiest ports in America, there are a number of options to get to the cruise terminal. From Uber to shuttles, you can easily make your way to the Port Canaveral/Cocoa Beach area .

But perhaps no way of getting to the port is as convenient as an Orlando hotel near the airport with a cruise shuttle. As a way of winning your business, many spots near the airport offer a free shuttle to their hotel after you arrive from your flight. And then after your stay, they can help you with a shuttle ride to Port Canaveral (for a fee).

This way you don’t have to worry how you are going to get to the hotel from the airport or to the cruise ship on the day you sail. (A number of hotels in Port Canaveral also offer cruise shuttles if you prefer to stay closer to your ship.)

How Airport and Cruise Shuttles Work for Orlando Hotels

Airport Shuttles : Most of the hotels below work in a similar way. They offer free shuttles between the airport and the hotel that run either 24 hours per day, or at all times except for a few hours in the middle of the night.

You’ll want to get all your luggage and only then call the hotel. They will direct you on where to go to catch your ride. Since all the hotels below are right near the Orlando airport, the ride should only take 5-10 minutes.

Port Canaveral Shuttles : Given the distance, the vast majority of hotels don’t have their own shuttle to the port. Instead, cruise passengers can arrange a ride with a third-party shuttle provider if staying at a hotel near the airport. So you book the hotel and then contact the shuttle company to book your ride . The shuttle will pick you up right at the hotel to take you to the port. They will also give you a ride back for your flight when you return.

Expect the shuttle to run roughly $50-70 per person, round trip. The following companies offer pickup at the hotels near the airport.

  • Cortrans Shuttle
  • Port Canaveral Quick Shuttle
  • Danica Transportation

For hotels that offer shuttles through a package, you may have to book through the hotel website. Review ratings come from Google and are rounded to the nearest half point.

Port Canaveral officials announced a new seventh cruise terminal and...

“The need now for our cruise partners is immediate,” said port CEO Capt. John Murray. “We have a point now where we’re starting to turn business away from Port Canaveral.”

The port had initially targeted construction of a seventh terminal on the south side of the port after moving several marina businesses. This new plan will convert North Cargo Berth 8 opposite Cruise Terminal 5 on the north side of the port.

Port Canaveral officials announced a new seventh cruise terminal and parking garage will be built on the north side of the port in the west turn basin opposite Cruise Terminal 5 targeting completion in summer 2026. (Courtesy/Port Canaveral)

Murray said the original plan turned out to be “a five- to six-year project to do it correctly.”

Working with the existing cargo terminal allows for a quick construction turnaround. It’s already deep enough to handle any cruise ship, even what will become the world’s largest cruise ship, Royal Caribbean’s Star of the Seas, set to call Port Canaveral home when it debuts.

“It will be a state-of-the-art terminal, will use all the latest technologies, that will handle the largest ships in the world, and it will be a multiuser facility,” Murray said. “In other words, we, Port Canaveral, will run the terminal and it won’t be cruise-line specific — so multiple brands, a big-ship terminal, gives us the flexibility to put the largest ships in there and the smaller ones at some of our older facilities that can’t handle the largest ships.”

Building what is expected to be about a 2,500-space garage and other terminal support buildings also is going to be faster because the space is already what is known as “greenfield,” meaning ready for any kind of development.

Right now, the cargo berth is basically a parking wharf, sometimes used by SpaceX recovery ships for docking, but most of the space industry will focus on the other cargo terminals farther to the east in the port, Murray said.

Port Canaveral plots timeline to take over marina for new cruise terminal

Murray said the south side plans are still something the port wants to pursue, but the cruise terminal needs by shifting to the north will alleviate the demand for now.

An eighth terminal could come online after 2030, he said, but it also allows the port to focus attention on its commercial fishing industry and reorganize the district in the coming years. So the existing announcement that the port was not going to renew the lease of Cape Marina, which it deems an underutilized space, is still going forward.

The cruise industry is its main revenue source, generating the bulk of more than $187 million projected for this fiscal year. The port had 16 cruise ships calling it home either year-round or seasonally over the last year, and expects that to grow to 19 in the next fiscal year.

A new terminal could realistically add another three, Murray said, and that would continue to grow the port’s burgeoning business that expects to see more than 7 million passenger movements this year, and continue its already record revenue totals.

Port Canaveral chalks up record month amid growing cruise demand

Next year will also see the port’s first homeported ships from Princess Cruises and Celebrity Cruises on top of the fleets already from Disney, Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Norwegian and MSC Cruises.

Murray said tinquiries for new ships are running into full slates not only at Port Canaveral, but also Port Everglades and Miami, while also pointing out that Tampa and Jacksonville are limited in what size ships they can take on.

“So there’s only three ports really that can take these ships in Florida and if we can’t take them, they’re going to go into another state. So it’s really important that we find a way to take that business and keep that economic impact in Florida,” he said.

‘urgent and necessary:’ port canaveral ceo announces new cruise terminal, expansion coming to north side of port.

BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. – In order to meet the growing demands of the cruise industry, Port Canaveral announced its plan to build a new cruise terminal and parking garage.

During a press conference on Thursday, CEO John Murray said the need for a new terminal is urgent and necessary.

“All of our ports in Florida on the East Coast and south ports are full,” said Murray. “Can’t go to Miami, can’t go to Tampa, the ships are too big. Jacksonville — same issue.”

The expansion will be located at the existing North 8 berth and adjacent to Terminal 5, an area that Murray said is underutilized. Designed and built in 2018 for multi-purpose flexibility, the North 8 berth will require minimal modifications to extend the current 1,020 linear feet bulkhead to 1,344 feet to accommodate large cruise vessels.

Crews will also be able to build a terminal faster on the north side as opposed to the busier south side. The new terminal would help relieve congestion in the south side community and bring it to the north side.

The announcement comes as Port Canaveral prepares for more ships in 2024: Utopia of the Seas — the world’s second-largest cruise ship — is expected to set sail in July, Celebrity and Princess cruises are expected to begin in the fall, and the Disney Treasure’s maiden voyage is set for December.

“We’re at a point where our six terminals are operating at maximum utilization and the need for a new terminal has become more urgent,” Murray said.

About 800,000 people went on a cruise in March, a new monthly record for the port.

Murray said the port is so busy it actually has to turn some ships away now.

Murray could not give details on production costs but did say the project is self-funded. The goal is to have the cruise terminal operating by mid-summer of 2026.

Previously, that was about when the port wanted to finish a terminal in the marina district, as the port said it would not renew the Cape Marina’s lease when it ends in 2026.

On Thursday, Murray reiterated the lease still won’t be renewed, but he also said fishermen are not being kicked out of the port.

“We’re going to carve out a long-term spot for our commercial fishermen,” he said. “We think of them as the fabric of our port, and we want to make sure that we protect that segment of the industry.”

Murray said building a terminal at the marinas should happen around 2030.

Port Canaveral (Orlando, Florida) unveils plans for new multi-user cruise terminal

CruiseMapper logo

Port Canaveral (Orlando, Florida) has announced a strategic initiative to construct a new multi-user cruise terminal to meet the growing demands of the cruise industry. The decision to build this terminal at the Port's existing North 8 berth is aimed at maximizing cost efficiency, operational flexibility, and expediting the construction timeline to accommodate the largest cruise ships from various brands.

The existing North 8 berth, situated in close proximity to Port Canaveral's Cruise Terminal 5, was designed with multi-purpose flexibility in mind when constructed in 2018. With minimal modifications required, the current bulkhead at North 8 will be extended from 1,020 linear feet to 1,344 feet to accommodate larger vessels effectively. Waterside improvements on the north side of the shared basin will also enhance the berthing capacity of Cruise Terminal 5.

The new multi-user cruise terminal and associated parking facility will leverage advanced technology to ensure optimal flexibility for accommodating multiple users and brands. The North 8 location, combined with its current berth configuration and available uplands, offers the advantage of minimizing disruptions to ongoing port and tenant operations during the construction phase.

The timeline for the design, engineering, and construction of the new facility is currently being developed, with a targeted completion goal set for summer 2026. The terminal campus will feature a multi-story parking facility capable of accommodating up to 3,000 vehicles, alongside roadway enhancements including turning lanes and a dedicated "flyover" ramp directly connecting the site to State Road 401.

Florida Cruise Port Home to MSC, Norwegian, and More Is Expanding — What to Know

A cruise port on Florida’s Space Coast is going bigger, planning to build a brand-new cruise terminal to meet demand.

Port Canaveral’s new, expanded cruise terminal will be built at one of the existing berths and is expected to be operational by summer 2026, according to the port . When complete, it will have the ability to serve multiple cruise lines.

"A new cruise terminal and the business it will deliver builds on our Board’s commitment to the economic prosperity of our Port community," Micah Loyd, the chairman of the Canaveral Port Authority Board of Commissioners, said in a statement. “This proactive, business-oriented strategy reaffirms our commitment to ensure the State of Florida continues to prosper from cruise tourism and remains the ‘Cruise Capital of the World’.”

When finished, the new terminal will extend the current North 8 berth by more than 300 feet to  accommodate larger cruise ships. The project will also include a new multi-story parking facility with the ability to accommodate up to 3,000 vehicles along with roadway improvements.

Port officials expect disruptions to current operations to be minimal during construction due to the project’s location.

Capt. John Murray, the Port Canaveral CEO, said in the statement the planned new terminal is “key to retaining and growing this important business segment that supports many jobs and delivers high value to our regional and state economy.”

Currently, several major cruise lines call Port Canaveral home: Carnival Cruise Line, Disney Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean, Norwegian Cruise Line, and MSC Cruises. In fact, the site welcomed an all-time high 6.8 million cruise passengers in the 2023 fiscal year, according to the port .

From Port Canaveral , which is nestled along Florida’s Space Coast , travelers can explore NASA’s Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex , hang out on the sand at Cocoa Beach , tour mangroves, keep an eye out for manatees and dolphins, and more.

Port Canaveral announces plans to build a new cruise terminal

PORT CANAVERAL, Fla. — Port Canaveral announced plans Thursday to build a new cruise terminal to accommodate large cruise vessels.

Port officials plan to build a new multi-user cruise terminal at the Port’s existing North 8 berth, which would require minimal modifications to extend the current 1,020 linear feet bulkhead to 1,344 feet.

What You Need To Know

Port canaveral announces plans to build a new cruise terminal port officials to build a new multi-user cruise terminal at the port's existing north 8 berth they will extend the current 1,020 linear feet bulkhead to 1,344 feet officials hope to have the new terminal operational by summer 2026.

Port Canaveral’s North 8 berth — which was designed and built in 2018 for multi-purpose flexibility — shares its basin with the Port’s Cruise Terminal 5 on the northside of Port Canaveral.

In addition to extending the North 8 bulkhead capacity, the project would also extend and improve the berthing capacity of Cruise Terminal 5 by improving the waterside to the northside of the shared basin.

“We have cruise partners with immediate needs to locate assets in Florida and Port Canaveral is where they want to be,” stated Capt. John Murray, Port Canaveral CEO. “Our ability to efficiently bring a new cruise terminal online was key to retaining and growing this important business segment that supports many jobs and delivers high value to our regional and state economy.”

Due to North 8’s location, current berth configuration and vacant uplands, port officials said construction would cause minimal disruption to current port and tenant operations.

The new terminal campus will include a multi-story parking facility to accommodate up to 3,000 vehicles and roadway improvements in and out of the new facility, including turning lanes and a “flyover” ramp directly connecting the site with State Road 401.

The port is often referred to as “the cruise capital of the world,”

Here, 6 terminals are already operating at maximum capacity, and officials say the need for a new terminal has become urgent.

Baking is her specialty. It’s Brenda Bernard’s day to day at Ludz Foodie Bar and Grill. Tourism that comes from the cruise ships makes up about 80% of Bernard’s clientele.

For her, today’s announcement is great news.

“What we look at is job creation, an opportunity to bring in more employees and get involved with the local community,” Bernard said.

For businesses in the area, accommodating these extra crowds will mean hiring more employees and expanding restaurants to accommodate the growth in Port Canaveral.

Officials are targeting summer 2026 to complete the new facility.

Child airlifted off cruise ship after emergency

A child is recovering after suffering a medical emergency on a cruise ship and being airlifted in the open ocean by Brevard County-based rescuers.

BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. - A child is recovering after suffering a medical emergency on a cruise ship and being airlifted in the open ocean by Brevard County-based rescuers.

It happened on May 4 on a Carnival cruise ship nearly 350 miles off the East Coast. The child and his mother were both hoisted to safety in the open ocean before they were flown to a hospital in North Carolina.

It’s not what anyone expected to see on vacation.

"It was terrifying. I was screaming and crying, and anxious, scared the whole time watching them take him," said Angela Bridges, whose son suffered a medical emergency with a perforated bowel.

Bridges couldn’t believe her eyes when she watched her 12-year-old son get hoisted away on their family vacation.

She’s glad he was because she knew something was wrong when "he couldn’t really get up and move a lot, and he was in pain. He couldn’t keep anything down really," said the mom.

He saw a doctor on board on Friday, and by Saturday, jets and helicopters from the Patrick Space Force-based 920th Rescue Wing were on the scene in the sea to rescue the family.

"Even me going down on a silly water slide, my heart was pounding. I can’t imagine being airlifted out on a stretcher," said Marla White, who was a passenger on the cruise ship.

White watched in awe and recorded everything when Aiden and Angela were lifted into the air on a stretcher at sea.

"I even had tears in my eyes because I’m a mom, too," said White.

Doctors say Aiden punctured his bowel, and he’s still at a hospital in North Carolina with his mom.

"I had a doctor tell me today, just this morning tell me that this is such a rare occurrence to see a 12-year-old with no history, no medical reason, no anything that shows why there would be a perforated bowel," said his mom.

FOX 35’s Esther Bower asked the mom how she felt now, knowing he was in safe care, recovering, and still alive.

"I’m definitely very grateful because one small thing could have been the difference between getting him off the ship or not and him surviving and not," she said.

The rescue mission took eight hours from beginning to end, and crews flew more than 1,200 hundred miles to transport the child to safety, with cruise passengers cheering as the family left the ship.

The Bridges family didn’t know how long they’d have to stay at the hospital, but they’re thankful everyone came together to make sure her son didn’t lose his life on their vacation.

"We were very lucky," concluded Bridges.

To help with expenses and recovery costs, the family started a GoFundMe for their son’s journey.
