Cebu Waterfalls are some of the best waterfalls I have ever been to and I am sure many other tourists would agree when visiting Cebu Island in the Philippines!

Cebu is so diverse offering a mecca of adventurous things to do including epic waterfalls, panoramic viewpoints, swimming with whale sharks, island hopping, and much more!

I have put together this ultimate list of the 6 Best Falls In Cebu including where to find them, how much the entrance fees are and what to expect at each one.

Kawasan Falls in Badian is without a doubt the most popular falls in Cebu!

A visit to Kawasan Falls to do the canyoneering is the most adrenaline-pumping adventure to be had in the Philippines.

Whether it’s your first time canyoneering or not, the Kawasan Falls experience is not to be missed on your South Cebu itinerary!

Kawasan Falls is located just 45 minutes drive from Moalboal in South Cebu.

I recommend pre-booking a  Kawasan Falls Tour Package  online with Viator, which includes return transfers from your accommodation in Moalboal so you won’t need to worry about the logistics.

Upon arriving at the Kawasan Canyoneering Headquarters, we met our guide Raul who got us fitted into the required safety equipment such as water shoes, life jackets, and helmets.

We took a ride on the back of a motorbike to the top of the mountain and before we knew it we were completely submerged in the first rock pool.

Soon after, Raul made us sit down at the edge of a one-meter cliff before he gently pushed us backward over a small set of falls into another rock pool below.

At this point, I knew we were in for an epic adventure!

We then continued navigating our way through knee-deep water that was as clear as crystal. The water trail took us through some amazing caves and natural rock slides.

There were also numerous cliff jumps ranging anywhere from three meters up to fourteen meters.

Do note that if you are afraid of heights you’ve always got the option to walk around the cliffs instead of jumping.

When you reach the end of the canyon it will bring you to the  famous Kawasan Falls .

You can spend as much time as you like as there are about five different levels of waterfalls and several big cliff jumps to keep you entertained.

There are also a few restaurants by the main waterfall to grab something to eat and drink at the end of your adventure.

Aguinid Falls is one of the most unique waterfalls in Cebu.

The multi-tiered Aguinid Falls is one heck of an adventure and I highly recommend adding it to your list of things to do.

These falls are not quite as popular as Kawasan Falls just up the road, but the word is spreading quickly about this awesome Cebu waterfall and it’s just as impressive, in my opinion.

Aguinid Falls is located in the small village of Samboan in South Cebu. From Oslob, it’s a 30-minute drive and from Moalboal it’s approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes drive to reach Aguinid Falls.

The entrance fee to Aguinid Falls is 300 pesos which includes compulsory safety equipment (wet shoes, helmet, and life jacket), two guides, and also the tip for the guides.

As I mentioned earlier, Aguinid Falls in Cebu is a multi-tiered waterfall with eight levels of falls to be exact. Eight freakin’ waterfalls, can you believe it?!

Although the locals say there are eight levels of falls, only six levels are currently accessible as they are still working to improve the trail to the higher levels.

This is not your typical waterfall where you take a short trek in, go for a dip and take photos, but rather an epic and very physical adventure that involves jumping, climbing ropes, and navigating your way through the cascading falls.

It took us around two hours to complete the Aguinid Falls tour but that included many stops to take photos. For the average person, it would take around one hour from start to finish.

BINALAYAN HIDDEN FALLS

Binalayan Falls (also referred to as Binalayan Hidden Falls) is yet another one of the best Cebu waterfalls!

Binalayan Falls is located in Samboan in South Cebu. From Oslob, it’s a 30-minute drive and from Moalboal it’s approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes drive to reach the falls.

There are half a dozen waterfalls in Samboan, South Cebu so if you plan it right you can visit more than one waterfall in one day.

An ideal one-day South Cebu itinerary from Moalboal is to first visit Aguinid Falls, secondly Binalayan Hidden Waterfalls, and thirdly Dau Falls.

Binalayan Falls entrance fee is 60 pesos which includes a guide and there is also a 10 pesos parking fee. Tipping your guide is completely up to you, but somewhere between 50–100 pesos would do.

There are a number of water crossings on the way to the main set of falls at Binalayan so it’s best to wear a pair of water shoes or flip-flops because your feet will get wet.

The first tier at these falls features a shallow crystalline rock pool, a rest area with some make-shift benches, and a tire swing hung from a tree.

It’s definitely worth taking a short break here in this tranquil little section of the trek.

The main falls boast a 5oft tall rock face and the flow of water is divided into three separate streams that fill the basin beneath.

There is a cave behind the falls from which you can climb up and jump, but it’s best to let your guide go first to show you how it’s done.

The water is around two meters deep so I wouldn’t recommend diving headfirst. I touched the sandy bottom with my feet when I jumped, even with my knees bent.

There is also a range of cliff jumping spots on the left-hand side of these Cebu falls, but even this is a bit sketchy due to the pool below being quite shallow.

Only jump from a height you feel comfortable with, even if the guide encourages you to jump from a higher level just say no.

Apart from cliff jumping, you can hang out in the crystalline waters at the base of the falls and explore the natural caves behind the falls.

My visit to Dao Falls in Samboan was  low-key one of the best adventures I had in South Cebu and a visit to these Cebu waterfalls is an absolute must!

Dao Falls is best visited from Moalboal, which is 53km away and the drive takes around one hour and twenty minutes.

These falls are recognized as the tallest set of falls  in the Samboan region and the jungle trail trek is an epic adventure in itself.

The entrance fee to Dao Falls is 60 pesos which includes a guide and the parking fee is an additional 10 pesos.

Trekking to Dau Falls from the parking lot takes around twenty to thirty minutes including stops for photos.

It isn’t a difficult trek by any means though do note that  your feet will get wet  along this jungle trail.

In most parts, it requires walking through knee-deep water and I recommend bringing a pair of  slip-on waterproof shoes  for these sections.

An  impressive bamboo suspension bridge  surrounded by coconut palms stretches across the river and on the other side is the beginning of the jungle trail to Dau Waterfall.

It wasn’t long until we were completely immersed in a dense jungle as we followed the canyon trail upstream which seemed to grow narrower the further we advanced. It was one of the  most tranquil trails  I have ever hiked along.

Vines cover the canyon walls and  blue Gatorade-colored waters cascade seamlessly past us as we navigated our way toward Dao Waterfall.

The adventurous hike to Dao Falls, in my opinion, is what makes this location so unique. There are many  turquoise rock pools  along the way that are well worth stopping at for a quick dip and this is where you’ll likely get your best photos.

When you reach the top you’ll be graced with the epic sight of Dao Falls which towers 50 meters tall above the large catch basin.

INAMBAKAN FALLS

Inambakan Falls in Ginatilan features blue Gatorade-colored springs and jungle surrounds.

There are multiple levels at Inambakan Waterfall which makes this one of the most epic falls in Cebu to explore.

Inambakan Falls is located in the small village of Ginatilan in South Cebu.

The entrance fee at Inambakan Falls is 50 pesos and an additional 10 pesos for parking.

The hike down to the main falls takes no more than 5 minutes from the jump-off point and the trail winds upstream until it emerges at the base of the 100-foot-tall Inambakan Falls.

My favorite feature of Inambakan falls is the milky blue pool of water in the catch basin which gets its color from the limestone cliffs that surround the falls. It seriously looks inviting enough to drink!

Once you’ve taken a dip in the milky blue waters at the main set of falls, continue hiking along the trail and up the stairs to the next few levels of these Ginatilan Falls.

You can stop in at the second level of Inambakan which features a shallow rock pool right at the top of the main set of falls.

Watch your step on the rocks at this spot as they are very slippery and it’s a long way down if you fall.

The level up from here was my favorite because there are several cliff-jumping spots into a number of refreshing rock pools.

I did a depth check first before throwing myself off different rocks into the crystalline waters of Inambakan Falls.

The lush jungle that surrounds the area contrasts beautifully with the water and adds to the tranquility of this natural attraction.

 If you’re up for a full day of adventuring, definitely add Inambakan Falls to your list of waterfalls to visit!

TUMALOG FALLS

Tumalog Falls in Oslob is one of the most popular Cebu waterfalls!

A visit to these falls is typically combined with the Oslob Whale Shark Tour which is another great activity to add to your South Cebu itinerary!

There is one tour that I can recommend which is a full-day trip from Cebu City and it includes  swimming with whale sharks in Oslob  and a visit to Tumalog Falls.

The Tumalog Falls entrance fee is 20 pesos if you plan to visit without a tour and the opening times are Monday to Sunday from 6 am to 5 pm.

Tumalog Falls is quite unique, featuring a mellow curtain of water falling down the face of a monolithic limestone cliff. There is a large swimming area at the base of the falls where you can take a dip to cool off.

The color of the water in the basin is that classic milky blue tinge that the Philippines is most famous for!

The falls are surrounded by tall bamboo and mossy walls adding to the jungle vibes that you will find here.

A large cave can also be found on the left-hand side of the falls if you wish to explore deeper and get another cool perspective of Tumalog Falls from inside.

There are changing rooms and toilet facilities for guests to use and also a small sari-sari store if you wish to buy some water and light snacks.

Cebu Island is located in the Central Visayas region of the Philippines.

Cebu island is very close to the neighboring islands of Bohol and Negros Oriental which can be easily reached by plane or ferry.

BEST TIME TO VISIT CEBU

The best time to visit Cebu, weather-wise, is between April and July when temperatures are hot and there is barely any rainfall.

This is also high season in Cebu, so expect to see many tourists during these months.

I recommend visiting Cebu during the shoulder months of the high season between November and March which sees a bit of rainfall but usually only lasts for a couple of hours and the rest of the day is sunny.

Try to avoid the typhoon season which is between August and October.

GETTING AROUND CEBU

There are a couple of options on how to get around Cebu Island Philippines and they are by public bus, taxi, grab taxi, scooter, habal habal (motorbike taxi), tricycle, and Jeepney.

You can rent a scooter in Cebu City and Moalboal for as little as 300 pesos per day and make your own way around to the tourist destinations in Cebu.

If you are not confident driving a scooter, the other option is to ride in a taxi, grab taxi, public bus, Jeepney, tricycle, or habal habal in the main city areas.

For longer distance journeys, for example; from Cebu City to Moalboal, Cebu City to Oslob, or Cebu City to the north, it is best to take public buses as opposed to riding a scooter or taking a taxi.

From Cebu City to South Cebu the journey time is around 3 hours on the bus and the cost is between 150-200 pesos.

If you are traveling to North Cebu to visit Malapascua Island, Kalanggaman Island, and Bantayan Island, the bus journey is around 4 hours and the cost is between 200-250 pesos.

Alternatively, it’s possible to rent a car in Cebu and drive around the island at your own pace.

WHERE TO STAY IN CEBU CITY

There are two main tourist areas to stay in when visiting Cebu Island, one is in Cebu City in Central Cebu and the second is in Moalboal in South Cebu.

Cebu City is located on the Central East Coast of the island and it’s a great base for a day or two upon arriving and exploring some of the Cebu tourist attractions.

However, the majority of places to visit in Cebu are in South Cebu and the best place to stay is in Moalboal which is located on the Southeast coast of the island.

Cebu has hundreds of accommodation options to choose from, so I have narrowed it down to a few of the best places to stay in Cebu City and in Moalboal to fit the needs of budget backpackers, luxury travelers, and everyone in between.

Luxury: Radisson Blu Cebu City

Radisson Blu Cebu is the best 5-star accommodation in Cebu City! The hotel is centrally and located features direct access to SM Mall, a large outdoor swimming pool, 3 dining options, and is close to the airport.

The rooms offer panoramic views of the city and are fitted with a flat-screen tv, a large memory foam bed, 24-hour room service, air conditioning, a spacious living area, and a private bathroom.

It’s perfect for couples, families, and friends.

Mid Range: Cebu Parklane International Hotel

Parklane International Hotel is a 3-star accommodation in the heart of Cebu City and is within walking distance of Ayala Center and other nearby attractions.

This property features an outdoor swimming pool, a fitness center with a sauna, 3 dining options, and free wifi.

The rooms are spacious and fitted with air conditioning, flat-screen tv, a work desk, sofa seating, and a private bathroom.

Recommended place to stay for couples, friends, and families.

Budget: Murals Hostel & Cafe

I personally stayed at Murals Hostel on several occasions and can’t recommend this place enough!

Murals actually have 3 properties in awesome locations, one is in Mactan near the airport and the other two are in the city center.

There are dorm rooms, private rooms, and capsule-style rooms available perfect for solo travelers, friends, and couples.

There is also a really great co-working space at Murals Hostel & Cafe with high-speed wifi!

Moalboal has hundreds of accommodation options to choose from, so I have narrowed it down to a few of the best places to stay to fit the needs of budget backpackers, luxury travelers, and everyone in between.

Luxury: Dolphin House Resort Moalboal

Dolphin House is the best luxury accommodation in Moalboal, located a stone’s throw away from the ocean. Features included a pool, a restaurant and bar, free wifi, and ocean views.

There are double rooms, triple rooms, family rooms, and bungalows available at Dolphin House Resort.

It’s recommended for families, friends, or couples looking for a luxurious stay.

Mid Range: Pescadores Seaview Suites

Chief Mau hostel offers dorm rooms and private rooms with free wifi. The owner Trish is super lovely and goes out of her way to make all of her guests feel welcome and comfortable.

There is a shared lounge with hammocks, a billiards table, and an in-house restaurant and bar serving up the best western food in Moalboal.

For solo travelers, couples, or friends on a budget, this is the spot for you.

This set of multi-tier waterfalls lies in Barangay Matutinao, Badian, which sits on the southwestern coast of Cebu and is about 103 kilometers from Cebu City. This coastal town is blessed with natural attractions such as rivers, freshwater streams, and massive jungle canyons. Badian is also close to notable towns like Moalboal (18KM away), Alegria ( 17KM away), and Oslob (73 kilometers away).

Kawasan Falls tours have always been popular among international and domestic tourists. This attraction is a photographer’s dream come to life! Visitors are in awe of Kawasan Falls’ clear turquoise water and natural pools. Locals often compare this color to the Gatorade blue drink. Sitting at the foot of the Mantalongon Mountain Range, Kawasan Falls' surroundings consist of gorgeous lush scenery and steep limestone canyon walls.

Another spectacular attribute of Kawasan Fall in Cebu is its multi-tier layout. It has three waterfall levels, all of which feature natural pools where visitors can swim and relax. Kawasan is not only picturesque, but it is also an excellent place to swim in. Visitors often praise the water as cold and refreshing. The water from the top of Kawasan comes from the Kandayvic Spring. It then eventually flows into the Matutinao River and the Tañon Strait.

The ideal period to visit Kawasan Falls in Badian is dependent on what you want to experience as a visitor. The dry period (late December to early June) is an ideal time to visit because, during this time, Kawasan Falls is a safer place to trek and do some Cebu canyoneering tours . However, the dry months are also the busiest as more domestic tourists make their way to Kawasan. 

The rainy season (from late June to early December) makes Kawasan Fall's water flow more abundant and powerful. Thus, if you visit during this time, you will be able to witness the true power of Kawasan. Another advantage of visiting during this time is there are usually fewer visitors. If you plan to visit during the rainy season, make sure to keep track of weather forecasts as typhoons can also occur at this time. Canyoneering under typhoon conditions is very dangerous as trekking spots and rocks are slippery.

Visiting during the shoulder season (late December to early June) may also be an excellent decision because the water flow is also powerful at this time, but the crowd is smaller. Take note that the waterfalls normally start to get busy again closer to Christmas. 

When it comes to the specific day and time to visit Kawasan, it is better to visit during the weekdays. To beat the crowd, come early in the morning before 9 AM. Weekends in Kawasan are busier compared to weekdays.

Depending on where you’re coming from, this Kawasan Falls travel guide will tell you how to get to this Badian tours attraction. Here are the most common routes:

How to Go to Kawasan Falls from Manila

If you are coming from Manila , the most convenient way to get to Kawasan Falls is to fly from NAIA (Ninoy Aquino International Airport) or Manila Airport to Mactan-Cebu International Airport . Philippine Airlines and Cebu Pacific are some of the airlines that facilitate this flight route every day. 

When you land in Mactan-Cebu International Airport, you can head first to Cebu City or go straight to Badian. You can take a taxi from the airport to Cebu City. The best way to get to Badian right from the Mactan-Cebu International Airport is to prearrange a private vehicle. The distance between the airport and Badian is around 120KM.

You can also fly to Bohol or Dumaguete from Manila. From either of these places, take a ferry then a bus to reach Badian. Please take note that this route takes longer and requires more transport transits.

How to Go to Kawasan Falls from Cebu

You can reach Kawasan Falls from different areas on Cebu Island.

Going to Kawasan Falls from Cebu City 

Cebu City is the main jumping point for Kawasan Falls tours and trips. Tourists can book such a tour, which includes the drive from Cebu City to Kawasan Falls. 

Alternatively, you can get to Kawasan Falls by self-driving or taking the bus. If you are taking the bus, make your way to Cebu’s South Bus Terminal. Make sure to ride the bus that goes to Bato via Barili. This bus travels along the western part of Cebu Island. If you prefer a private trip, you may rent a car in Cebu and drive to Badian. Just make sure you have the requirements to rent a car in the Philippines .

Don’t hesitate to ask bus terminal staff if you’re unsure of which bus to take. Buses to Badian run several times every day. 

Going to Kawasan Falls from Moalboal

Moalboal is around 21 kilometers from Kawasan Falls. From here, you can take a bus or tricycle (local three-wheeled transport) to Kawasan if you are not self-driving. 

You can approach a tricycle driver and discuss taking you straight to Kawasan Falls. Taking a bus is the cheaper option. However, you will need more time and patience to wait for the bus. 

On the main road of Moalboal, wait for any southbound bus. You need to hail one of the buses and inform the bus driver that you are going to Kawasan Falls. The bus driver can drop you off near the entrance of the falls. From this entrance, you must walk for around 15 minutes to get to the first waterfall tier. 

Other options to Kawasan include joining a canyoneering tour or driving a rented scooter from Moalboal.

Going to Kawasan Falls from Oslob

Oslob is another popular town in Southern Cebu known for whale shark watching tours . Depending on which road you take, Oslob is about 50 to 81 kilometers from Kawasan Falls. One of the shortest routes to get from Oslob to Kawasan is taking the Santander - Barili - Toledo Road. 

If you’re not self-driving or joining a tour, you can take buses from Oslob to Badian. The journey has two parts. The first part requires you to take a bus bound to Bato from Oslob. Once you reach Bato, you will need to take another bus going to Cebu City or Badian via Barili. 

From Bohol 

If you’re coming from Bohol Island, you can get to Kawasan Falls by first taking a 2-hour ferry ride from Tagbilaran City to Cebu City. From Cebu City, you can take a southbound bus to Badian as stated above.

Best Kawasan Falls Tours and Activities 

The beauty of Kawasan Falls can be enjoyed in various ways. Here are some of the best Kawasan Falls tours and activities that we recommend: 

Canyoneering 

There are many types of  Kawasan Falls tours you can choose from. However, tours that feature canyoneering to Kawasan Falls are arguably the most popular because they are thrilling and adventurous. The objective of canyoneering is to travel down a river or canyon, usually in a group. But instead of simply hiking, canyoneering participants accomplish the journey by doing a mix of activities like climbing, trekking, cliff diving, and swimming. 

Kawasan Falls canyoneering can be nerve-wracking so you shouldn’t do it by yourself without an experienced guide. The offered Kawasan canyoneering tours are usually organized, carried out safely, and led by a qualified guide.

Overall, Canyoneering in Cebu and Badian may sound really fun but it’s not for everyone. Fortunately, you can still enjoy Kawasan Falls in various ways.

It is very much possible to enjoy Kawasan Falls without canyoneering. A number of tourists are content swimming in one of the natural pools of the falls. Instead of taking the canyoneering route, you can go straight to Kawasan Falls without the challenging hike and jumps.

As mentioned, the water here is clean and refreshing. Once here, you can take your time and relax in the water. You can take as many photos as you want and have some snacks. Just make sure you clean up before you leave!

If you want to level up the thrill of your Kawasan Falls adventure, consider cliff diving. Diving from the cliff is actually one component of canyoneering. However, you have the option to just cliff dive on your own.

Cliff diving in Kawasan means jumping from the cliffs surrounding Kawasan Falls and plunging into its cool and deep natural pools. There are several cliffs surrounding the waterfall area and they are of varying heights. The two highest jumping points are around 10 and 12 meters. 

Hiking is a natural requirement for visiting Kawasan Falls. Visitors usually need to hike for about 15 minutes from the site entrance in order to reach the first tier of the waterfalls. You have a choice of hiring a guide to show you the way. But the path is clear enough that you may be able to hike by yourself. 

If you would like more hiking opportunities, you can hike to the higher tiers of Kawasan Falls. There are visible stairs that lead up to the second and third waterfalls.

As with all outdoor activities, activities offered in Kawasan Falls also come with certain risks. Accidents can happen when doing physical activities like cliff diving and climbing. Before signing up or doing the recommended Kawasan tours and activities, make sure that you are aware of and understand the risks. 

Take note that Kawasan Falls attracts a large crowd. During your visit, always keep an eye on your belongings. The good news is the site has lockers for rent for those who want to store their things extra safely. 

Wear light and comfortable clothing during your visit to Kawasan. Even if you plan on not swimming or canyoneering, it is smarter to bring swimwear and extra clothes during your visit to Kawasan. The waterfalls’ turquoise waters have been known to be quite enticing even to those who don’t enjoy swimming. 

If you book a canyoneering tour, the operator typically provides specific gear. However, you will need to wear sturdy outdoor shoes that can handle rocky terrain, and are meant to get soaked in water. 

Kawasan Falls in Cebu has a collection of small restaurants and stores around its area. But because of the site’s popularity, the prices of food and drinks sold here are more expensive than the standard prices. If you are on a budget, pack your own food and drinks to save money.  

Bring essential items only. Avoid carrying a heavy bag as you will do a fair amount of physical activity especially if you’ve signed up for a canyoneering-in-Cebu tour. 

Don’t forget to bring the essentials like a towel, a dry bag, sunscreen, and other sun protection. 

Using a waterproof camera may save you a lot of trouble. 

Kawasan Falls is a tourist hotspot so expect a lot of visitors. If you want to be in a smaller crowd, visit the waterfalls early in the morning. It usually gets busier at around 9 am.

People with reasonable physical fitness can do canyoneering or hiking up the higher levels of Kawasan. However, you need to manage your expectations and understand that these activities need more physical exertion than usual. 

Nearby Attractions 

Kawasan Falls is not the only premier attraction in the southern area of Cebu Island. If you are planning to Kawasan, consider stopping by the other nearby attractions. These natural attractions are spectacular on their own and are popular among tourists who are already on Cebu Island. 

The town of Moalboal is about 21 kilometers from Kawasan Falls. From the waterfall site, you can go through the Santander - Barili - Toledo Road to reach Moalboal. This ride is quite scenic as you will pass through the southwestern coast of Cebu Island, overlooking Badian Bay.

This coastal town is a highly recommended tourist destination mainly because of its beautiful beaches, islands, and natural attractions. Moalboal is home to some of the most beautiful beaches near Kawasan. What to Pack for Cebu, Philippines

Regardless of whether or not you choose to swim at the base of the waterfalls that you’ll be visiting, you will most likely get wet. Most of the waterfalls on Cebu Island require some easy river crossings and the trails can get slippery. So you’ll want to keep your valuables in a waterproof bag and do the trek in shoes that offer traction and that you don’t mind getting soaked.

• You’ll want to bring a swimsuit because the waterholes in Cebu are amazing! Most Filipinos swim in their clothes unless they’re under the age of six so you’ll probably feel more comfortable in a one-piece.
• It would be a shame to hike all the way to these amazing waterfalls and not go for a dip in the swimming holes at the bottom! Bring a lightweight, quick-drying towel so you can use it over and over again throughout the day.
• Many of the Cebu waterfalls involve several water crossings. And if you choose to go canyoneering at Kawasan Falls you’ll be scrambling up rocks and then leaping off of them so water shoes will help to give you traction.
• If you have expensive camera equipment that is not meant to get wet, invest in a quality dry bag prior to departing for the Philippines. If you’re not overly concerned that your bag might leak, there are plenty of dry bags for sale at shops around town and at the entrances to the more popular waterfalls.
• If you choose to hike in tennis shoes rather than water shoes, it’s a good idea to keep a pair of flip-flops in your bag as well. Oftentimes the area around the swimming holes is fairly rocky so it’s nice to have some protection for those soles.

7 Must-Visit Waterfalls on Cebu Island

1. mantayupan falls.

Mantayupan Falls is not a popular foreign tourist destination but it’s certainly a popular swimming hole for Filipinos! There is only one waterfall and the swimming hole is quite deep so kids will need a lifejacket. Bring snacks and spend the day getting to know the locals.

Getting to Mantayupan Falls

Mantayupan Falls is about two hours southwest of Cebu City in the central part of Cebu island. Most tourists on this side of the island choose to stay in the town of Moalboal. Mantayupan waterfall is just an hour or so north of Moalboal. The road is paved so it’s easy to rent a motorbike for the day to make the trip there and back. Even if you choose to stay elsewhere, it’s still worth visiting Moalboal for snorkeling & scuba diving.

You’ll find plenty of locals picnicking at Mantayupan Falls but very few other foreigners so the locals will likely be quite surprised and excited to see you. There is just one large waterfall and the base gets plenty of suns so it’s perfect for swimming. Locals like to congregate on the one bamboo raft that just sits on the left-hand side since most of the swimming area is very deep.

Hike to the Falls

The hike to the falls is fairly short. You’ll need to cross a long, swinging bridge and then you’ll come to the picnic area and the falls.

Where to Stay Near the Falls

Eco-Top Inn offers air-conditioned rooms for 1,000 PHP (~$20 USD) for 24 hours and an air-conditioned music lounge for 100 PHP/hour. However, we would recommend staying in the Moalboal area where there are plenty of options for eating, drinking, shopping, and sleeping. Here’s our favorite spot in Moalboal:

2. Kawasan Falls

Kawasan Falls is the most popular waterfall in Cebu and for good reason! There are several lovely waterfalls, perfect for swimming. Plus there are plenty of restaurants and adventure opportunities. It gets crowded so arrive early for a more enjoyable experience.

Getting to Kawasan Falls

The parking area for Kawasan Falls is located right off of the Santander highway about 45 minutes south of the Moalboal neighborhood. It’s an easy drive on a motorbike or you can catch one of the red or yellow buses that run every 30 minutes. You’ll know when you’re getting close when men start running out in the middle of the street to try to take you canyoneering.

There are three levels of waterfalls at Kawasan Falls that any visitor can access without a guide. The first is by far the busiest. There is a bustling restaurant with tables that are filled with locals sporting life jackets and chowing down. You’ve probably seen beautiful photos of couples on bamboo rafts in front of these falls. But don’t get your hopes up, all bamboo rafting adventures have been suspended indefinitely.

There is also a restaurant at the second falls. It is less crazy than the first and also gets a lot of suns, so swimming in the freezing cold water is a bit more enjoyable. You’ll probably want to spend the majority of your time lounging in the swimming hole below this waterfall. This is also the perfect vantage point to watch the canyoneering adventurers attempt their highest jump at 15 meters!

The third waterfall that you can hike to is a man-made fall that photographs exceptionally well but isn’t necessarily an ideal spot to swim.

You’ll want to park your motorbike at the church and then walk the long, paved path to the first waterfall. The parking fee is considered a “donation” to the church but you’ll be required to give 50 PHP. Most of the trek is paved and flat. You’ll see several vendors along the route and occasionally cars and motorbikes will attempt to pass through the crowds so be careful.

Once you reach the second parking lot (reserved for vendors) the pavement ends and you’ll begin walking on a well-trafficked path. There is a restaurant and plenty of tables at the base of Kawasan Falls. If you don’t feel like eating, there are very few areas to sit and enjoy the falls or to keep your belongings (although the restaurant does offer lockers for a fee).

From the first waterfall, you’ll need to take the stairs on the left side to climb up to the second fall. There is also a restaurant here but there are fewer people.

There are rooms available at the base of the falls for 1300 – 2500 per room depending on whether or not you need air conditioning or just a fan. However, Kawasan Falls is only a 30-minute or so drive from Moalboal which, as previously mentioned, is full of lovely hotels, delicious restaurants, and lively bars.

Activities at Kawasan Falls

The most popular adventure in the area is canyoneering. You do not need to book this in advance unless you specifically want to. There are guides literally lining the streets beginning several miles before you even reach the turn-off for Kawasan Falls. The price seems to be set at 1500 PHP per person (including lunch) or 1300 PHP per person if you’d rather skip the meal.

Your canyoneering adventure will start with a motorbike ride up to the very top where you will sign the manifest, grab an umbrella, and walk 30 minutes in the unrelenting sun to the first falls. There are some steep stairs here which can be difficult to get down but handrails make the descent easier.

Once you reach the first waterfall, you’ll strap on your helmet, tighten up your life vest, and hop in! If you are afraid of heights you really needn’t worry, many of the cliff jumps are optional (including the 15-meter jump at the end). There are also generally two options for jumping – a taller one and a much shorter one. Just tell your guide which one you would feel more comfortable with. Canyoning at Kawasan Falls is one of the best things to do in Moalboal (and in all of Cebu)!

3. Inambakan Waterfalls

Inambakan Waterfall is similar to Kawasan Falls but without the crowds! The main waterfall is beautiful and ideal for swimming, and there are several well-maintained trails so you can explore other smaller falls nearby.

Getting to Inambakan Falls

Inambakan Falls is tucked away in the hills to the east of the small town of Ginatilan. It is 34 kilometers south of Kawasan Falls making it about 50 kilometers south of Moalboal. Head south on the main road from Kawasan Falls (or north from Fantasy Lodge ) until you arrive in Ginatilan. Then turn inland and follow the steep curvy mountain road to Inambakan Falls. There are a few signs and plenty of friendly locals to point you in the right direction.

Overview of Inambakan Falls

While there are several guides waiting at the entrance who would love to show you around for a small tip, this is one of the few falls that doesn’t require you to have a guide. The trail is very well maintained so it’s quite easy to find the way on your own.

The biggest and most impressive falls are the first ones you’ll see along your hike. It’s also the perfect spot to swim. Follow the stairs up the right-hand side to see all seven levels of waterfalls in the area. The trail splits near the top. Off to the left is a small fall and swimming hole but you’ll want to turn back around once you’ve seen it to follow the trail on the right side the remainder of the way.

The seventh level is a waterfall with a refreshing swimming hole and the trail abruptly ends here. You’ll probably be surprised that you saw all seven levels but count them as you go back down. The fourth and fifth levels are visible, they’re just really small. The entire hike is lush and beautiful, and it’s far less crowded than many of its neighbors.

The walk from the parking area to the first waterfall is very short, less than 1/2 mile. There are a few sets of stairs but it’s easily accessible for any fitness level. If you continue to all seven levels you’ll need to climb some steep stairs and go through several water crossings.

Inambakan Falls and the rest of the Cebu waterfalls in this article can be reached from Moalboal, but you’re in for a long day on a motorbike. We recommend moving to a hotel a bit further south as it’s much more pleasant to visit these waterfalls in the early morning to avoid the heat and the crowds.

Fantasy Lodge Cebu

Fantasy Lodge Cebu  is centrally located to visit several lovely waterfalls in southern Cebu, as well as to do some whale shark diving in Oslob. The hotel has a gorgeous pool, delicious food, and a private beach.

4. Dao Falls

The entire hike to Dao Falls is gorgeous and you’ll be rewarded with an idyllic turquoise blue swimming hole at the end. It was our favorite waterfall in all of Cebu so be sure not to miss it!

Getting to Dao Falls

After visiting Inambakan Falls, return to the main road and head south for three kilometers. Turn inland two kilometers before you reach the town of Samboan and follow the signs to Dao Falls. The road is windy and a bit confusing but anyone you encounter along the way can point you in the right direction.

Overview of Dao Falls

You’ll be required to have a guide for this hike and as with a few others, tipping is at your own discretion. We gave our guide 250 PHP but also took our time at the falls to snap some photos and swim. The falls are truly stunning. The walls surrounding it are a greyish color and the water is milky blue.

The hike to Dao Falls is one of the prettiest in all of Cebu. After a fairly steep descent into the canyon (the loose gravel is difficult to walk on), you’ll follow a trail along the river for about 30 minutes or so.

You’ll need to do a few river crossings and if water levels are high, you may be walking through waist-deep water so be prepared to get wet. It’s also pretty slippery at times so be sure your valuables are in a waterproof bag, just in case you fall in.

Your guide will likely take you back up a different way than you went down. The climb back out of the canyon is over 100 stairs and if you are there in the middle of the day you’ll probably need to take a few breaks along the way. The shade is minimal, the gravel is loose, and the stairs seem never-ending.

Fantasy Lodge Cebu  is just 15 minutes south of Dao Falls and is the most conveniently located hotel in the area.

5. Binalayan Hidden Waterfalls

Binalayan Hidden Waterfalls is not nearly as popular as the rest of the Cebu falls because it’s not nearly as impressive as some of its neighbors. But cliff jumping is great fun and the guides go out of their way to make the experience enjoyable.

Getting to Binalayan Hidden Waterfalls

Binyalan Falls is located right off of the main road just a couple of kilometers south of the town of Samboan (or 5 kilometers south of Dao Falls). Just look for the sign and you’ll find the entrance booth and small parking area less than 100 meters from the road.

Overview of Binalayan Hidden Falls

Binayalan Falls (sometimes also called Bonbon Falls or Triple-Drop Falls) is the smallest of the waterfalls we visited in Cebu. They are also the least visited, which means you might wind up with them all to yourself!

You’ll be required to have a guide for this hike which will probably strike you as being silly since the trail is so well-trodden, flat, and short (less than a mile). However, they will show you where to jump off the rocks at the last waterfall and help you get up there if your climbing skills need work. They’ll snap photos of you and even push you on the tire swing.

We thought it was worth the 250 PHP tip we gave to have our own personal photographer hanging out with us for the hour or so that we were there.

The walk to the two waterfalls is short, flat, and well-trodden. Only the short bit at the end of the second waterfall is a bit slippery. Shoes with traction would be recommended over flip flops.

6. Aguinid Falls

The waterfalls of Aguinid are not only beautiful but also so much fun to get to! You’ll hike up a waterfall and crawl behind another to check out the hidden cave. It’s a good mix of relaxing swimming and adventurous hiking, and it’s a photographer’s dream.

Getting to Aguinid Falls

You’ll find the road for Aguinid Falls just a short 650 meters south of Binalayan Falls. It’s the second most popular waterfall in southwest Cebu (behind Kawasan Falls) so it’s well signed and easy to find. There are several free parking areas on the road leading to the falls. We were skeptical at first, but it seems they are just hoping you’ll make a purchase at their store before or after visiting the falls.

Overview of Aguinid Falls

Once you arrive at the entrance to the falls, you’ll need to stop at the booth and pay your entrance fees. You’ll also be assigned two guides and given a quick safety briefing. Apparently, they’ve been attempting to establish the guide program for three years. At the time of writing, it was still in the works so you aren’t required to pay your guides but you are expected to tip them. We read in advance that 100 PHP per guide was standard for the 1.5-hour trip. We gave each 300 PHP because we took our sweet time taking photos along the way.

There are five waterfalls in total and, of course, the most impressive one is at the end. There is a small cave in the middle of the waterfall and your guide will help to hoist you up and the other guide will take photos of you from down below.

There are five waterfalls in total. The distance between each is short but you’ll be expected to scramble up several rocks and climb a waterfall while using a rope. The rock is limestone so it provides a surprising amount of traction. You will most certainly get wet during this hike so wear either water shoes or tennis shoes that you don’t mind being soaked.

The guides are very attentive and helpful throughout the entire hike. They’ll carry your bag if you need it, lend you a helping hand, and get some amazing photos and videos of you along the way.

7. Tumalog Falls

Tumalog Falls has a minimal water flow but the cliffs that surround the swimming hole below are quite impressive. You’ll be in awe of the majestic beauty of the entire area!

Getting to Tumalog Falls

Tumalog Falls is just a short 10-minute drive from the whale shark watching area in Oslob. If you hired a tricycle to take you to go whale watching it’s easy to ask them to tack this stop on for a small fee. And if you have a motorbike it’s super convenient to get to after you’re finished snorkeling.

Overview of Tumalog Falls

Tumalog Falls is more of a water trickle as there isn’t a whole lot of water cascading into the pool below. But the steep cliffs rising overhead make for a picturesque spot regardless. Plus there is a pool at the bottom that is full of Garra rufa fish which are known for chowing down on dead skin. Soak your feet for 20 minutes or so for an all-natural foot spa.

From the parking area, you’ll need to walk down an incredibly steep paved road to reach the falls. It doesn’t take long, it’s only about a quarter of a mile, but it’s rough on the knees. Several entrepreneurial motorbike drivers are doing a booming business bringing visitors back up to the top for 30 PHP per person.

L & M Hearthstones Lodge  is close to the whale shark watching area and offers vibrantly colored spacious rooms. The pool is stunning and everyone on staff is super friendly and helpful.

Nearby Activities On Cebu Island

Cebu, and more specifically Oslob, is known for the whale sharks that congregate nearby. And divers and snorkelers are almost guaranteed to spot at least one. However, the way that the tour operators guarantee this up-close-and-personal experience is by chumming the water.

Many people would argue that this is really harmful to the whale sharks because it domesticates them, causes them not to fear people, and makes it difficult to return to the wild to feed themselves. Be sure you do your research before deciding whether or not you’d like to participate.

We would like to see at least Inambakans Falls, Dao, Aguinid, Kawasan, & I think Binalayan & Tumalog if not too far apart. Once we finish on Cebu we will be going either to Bohol or Siquijior next, whichever makes sense for the easiest, quickest travel. Would you please suggest how many days we need for these falls? is it best to just do one a day or are there some close by that it makes sense to do a couple in one day? Maybe it is too crowded by afternoon & best to do each in the morning? We would also appreciate if you are able to suggest the order that makes sense so we are not crossing back & forth. We will be there in the end of April. So the questions are:, best order, number of days needed & then move on to Bohol or Siquijor? Hi Gina, Thanks for reading our blog! The waterfalls are arranging in our blog from north to south and they are all along the southwestern side of Cebu. So the order you should visit them is the same order they are listed in the article: Kawasan, Inambakan, Dao, Binalayan, Aguinid, and then Tumalog.

Kawasan will take you at least half a day to visit – probably close to a full day if you want to do the canyoning. Inambakan is quite large as well and you could easily spend a half-day there. It’s also the busiest of the waterfalls and the one you would probably want to visit early in the morning to beat the crowds.

The other 4 waterfalls are not so big and you could see Dao, Binalayan, and Aguinid all in a single day (those 3 are quite close together).

Tumalog is quite far from the other waterfalls, but it is close Oslob (where the Whale Sharks are) and to Liloan – where the ferry leaves to Siquijor). So you could potentially visit Tumalog Falls in the morning and then catch the ferry to Siquijor. All total you’ll probably need at least 3 days to see those 6 waterfalls though 4 days would make it a little less rushed.

Regarding your last question, I think it makes the most sense to go to Siquijor after visiting the waterfalls on Cebu. There is a ferry to Siquijor from Liloan on the southern tip of Cebu. Then you can catch a ferry from Siquijor to Bohol.

In Badian/Alegria and even Moalboal there are many tour companies you can book with for your Kawasan Falls canyoneering adventure on Cebu. However, these are often big groups and can range in quality as it’s tough to see the ‘reviews’. I suggest booking in advance with the online tour that has 1000+ positive reviews. There are two main options that I recommened:

WHERE IS KAWASAN FALLS

Kawasan Falls is located in the municipality of Badian, on the southwestern coast of Cebu Island, Philippines. It’s a renowned tourist attraction famous for its turquoise blue waters and the thrilling canyoneering activities. The falls are situated approximately 130 kilometers southwest of Cebu City, the island’s capital. If you’re planning a trip, it’s typically a three-hour drive from Cebu City to Kawasan Falls.

HOW TO GET TO KAWASAN FALLS FROM CEBU CITY

Bus from Cebu South Bus Terminal : Take a bus from the Cebu South Bus Terminal to Badian. Look for buses heading towards Bato via Barili. These buses pass by Badian, where Kawasan Falls is located. The bus trip usually lasts around 3 to 4 hours depending on traffic. Buses typically leave every 30 minutes, starting early in the morning. Ask the bus conductor to drop you off at the entrance to Kawasan Falls, which is along the highway.

If you are traveling by car from Cebu City to Kawasan Falls, you can follow these steps:

• From Cebu City : Begin your journey from Cebu City center. You need to get on the Cebu South Coastal Road.
• Take the SRP Road : Take the South Road Properties (SRP) Road, also known as Cebu South Coastal Road. This road will lead you out of Cebu City.
• Carcar City and Barili : Continue driving and you will pass through the towns of Minglanilla, San Fernando, Carcar City, and Barili.
• To Badian : After Barili, you’ll pass through the towns of Dumanjug, Ronda, Alcantara, and Moalboal before finally reaching Badian.
• Arriving at Kawasan Falls : Once in Badian, watch out for signs to Kawasan Falls. The entrance to the trail leading to the falls is just off the highway. You can park your car in the designated parking area near the entrance.

HOW TO GET TO KAWASAN FALLS FROM MOALBOAL

Traveling from Moalboal to Kawasan Falls in Badian by moped is a convenient and scenic option. The journey typically takes about 30 minutes to 1 hour depending on your speed and traffic conditions. Here’s a guide:

• Starting from Moalboal : Begin your journey from the Panagsama Beach area in Moalboal.
• Route to Badian : You’ll need to head south on the Cebu South Road. This road will take you through the town of Badian.
• Arriving at Kawasan Falls : Once you reach Badian, look for signs to Kawasan Falls, which is right off the highway. There’s a designated parking area near the entrance where you can leave your moped.
• Walking to Kawasan Falls : From the parking area, there’s a 15-20 minute walk along a trail leading to Kawasan Falls.

MY EXPERIENCE: KAWASAN FALLS CANYONEERING

Huddled together in a village of Alegria we were waiting for locals to decide who wanted to be our guide. Surrounded by huts and coconut trees, we handed over 1500 pesos or $30 USD (2017). It would turn out to be the best money we spent all trip. The entire trip lasted over five hours and our guides were with us for 3.5 hours and then sent us on our way to Kawasan Falls for the last part of the journey.

The adventure started with a walk down a jungle path as we got to know our guides. Five different guys came with us and allowed us to go without lifejackets and helmets. I got to know our guide Jerome who was actually a ‘spiderman’ and did the entire canyon in jeans and flip-flops without slipping once.

ALEGRIA TO KAWASAN FALLS

As soon as we saw the river for the first time, the turquoise blue shocked me. I had never seen water looking so dense and rich in color. Our guides yelled out to jump in. I was a bit nervous about how deep it was and how lax the guides were but Jerome casually backflipped into the river so from that moment forward it was on.

The current was strong but even without lifejackets, it was never overwhelming. I would call myself a good swimmer and definitely had no issues but a lifejacket would have been more relaxing for the floating parts of the canyoneering tour at Kawasan Falls.

Each section of the Kawasan Falls canyoneering tour went for 10 or so minute before we would arrive at a big jump or a natural water slide. Our guides had no issues waiting around for everyone to climb the canyons and make their jump or to re-do their failed backflip to get a better photo. This is the benefit of booking a tour rather than just going with a big random group you will get thrown in to at the entrance. Our crew was really chilled out and it made the experience much more fun knowing that our guides were just in on the fun too.

The biggest jump of the day came early on and wasn’t a necessary part of the adventure. Only those who chose to climb the canyon and make the leap had to do it.

I jumped feet first but snapped a photo on my GoPro of this crazy headfirst dive from 50-60 feet. A GoPro and a small amount of cash were all I brought along as there was some food sold halfway through the adventure. It would be smart to bring a spare 200 pesos that will get you a drink and a snack and some cash for the tricycle home.

HALFWAY POINT OF CANYONEERING AT KAWASAN FALLS

From this point onwards it is mostly just trekking and exploring rather than cliff jumping and swimming. The water Is only ever about knee height. If you are like me and get cold easily you will be happy that you are out of the water and can now warm up for the rest of the Kawasan Falls canyoneering tour.

What are my favorite pieces of gear for waterfall adventures?

There are four pieces of gear that I simply never forget when I go on a waterfall adventure . These are four items that I using right now and this list gets updated every year! Here are my waterfall adventure essentials.

• Arcteryx BETA AR Rain Jacket : This is my go-to rain jacket. It’s super light, folds down into a tiny ball, and protects brilliantly in a storm. This one never leaves my backpack.
• Osprey Ultralight Dry Sack : Waterfalls get wet and wild so having this ultralight dry sack for cameras, phones and valuables means you don’t have to hold back!
• Quick-Dry Towel : A quick-dry towel is a must for travelers. It hardly takes up any room and dries in seconds.
• GoPro Hero 12 : The best and easiest way to capture your underwater and snorkeling adventures.

There was a huge dam wall and a rope swing that we spent some time checking out. The jungle was such an amazing setting for our journey and around each corner was another magical scene.

We were starting to wonder if we would ever reach Badian   Kawasan Falls when all of a sudden a small group of people huddled over a huge drop. We were at the second falls, which was about a 50 foot drop. I watched someone jump and decided this was a great way to cap off an amazing day!

REACHING KAWASAN FALLS

After hanging out in the pool below the second falls for about half an hour we decided to finally check out Kawasan Falls Cebu . Arriving at the falls we saw the 60ft+ jump and decided to give it a miss because of all the ropes below.

Kawasan Falls is a multi-tiered system of waterfalls with water that has a distinctive turquoise-blue color, thanks to the high mineral content in the water.

The first and largest waterfall is the most frequented by tourists. It’s a large cascade of water that plunges into a deep natural pool, which is great for swimming. The pool is surrounded by lush tropical vegetation that enhances the serene and picturesque setting.

Upstream, there are more waterfall tiers, smaller in size but equally beautiful. The second waterfall is about a 15-minute hike from the first, and the third waterfall, the smallest and most secluded, is another 15-minute hike further up.

This pool was much more crowded because many people just walk in off the road and pay Kawasan Falls entrance fee of 20 Pesos or 40 cents USD. We took in the moment and reflected on our amazing half-day journey before finally heading home.

A 10-minute walk out to the road before a short tricycle journey home and our amazing day was complete.

MY TIPS FOR CANYONEERING IN KAWASAN FALLS CEBU

• Do the Canyoneering from Alegria to Kawasan Falls. Just seeing Kawasan Falls at the end was not nearly as awesome as the entire experience and for only $30-40 USD it is amazing value.
• Don’t try and do canyoneering alone. I am the first one to try and ditch the guide but this is a tour where you really do rely on their knowledge with your safety. The guides tell you where to jump, land, step and what areas are safe. They help you hold on in the current and guide you safely. Our guides were happy for us to do risky climbing and high jumps but were on hand to point to us where to land and give us helpful advice.
• Only bring a GoPro. We were given a dry bag, which leaked. There is too much impact, scraping on rocks and big drops to feel entirely confident in a dry bag. Bring a GoPro but definitely no DSLR. If you only visit Kawasan Falls from the road without canyoneering you can bring a DSLR as you don’t need to swim or jump.
• Wear grippy closed shoes. I wore a pair of Nike’s and had no problems. There are lots of slippery rocks and climbing made much easier with a decent pair of sneakers.

IS KAWASAN FALLS CANYONEERING TOO BUSY?

Kawasan Falls is a popular destination and can be quite busy, especially during the peak tourist season and on weekends. Weekends, holidays, and the period from December to May, which corresponds to the dry season in the Philippines, typically see the most visitors.

Weekdays, on the other hand, tend to be less crowded. If you are seeking a quieter experience, planning your visit on a weekday can be a smart choice. Also, consider arriving early in the morning, before the larger tour groups typically arrive, regardless of whether you’re visiting on a weekday or weekend. The canyoneering activities tend to start getting busy from mid-morning onward. I’d highly recommend going on a weekday if you are a traveler to avoid the local crowds that come on the weekends.

It’s also worth noting that even during busy times, the canyoneering experience at Kawasan Falls is managed in a way that ensures groups are spaced out during the activity, thereby reducing the feeling of overcrowding. That’s the aim but it can still feel a bit crowded at times.

I advise going very early in the morning if you want to get photos of Kawasan Falls without 50 people swimming in the background!

WHERE TO STAY IN CEBU?

I really think that if you are going to be exploring Cebu, the best place to stay is in Moalboal. There are a few reasons why!

Cebu City might be where you land at the airport but if you are looking for adventure, you will need to head south as soon as possible. Most of the best waterfalls, whale sharks, snorkeling with sardines and turtles are all down in the south of Cebu. So where do you stay to do all of these adventures? Moalboal!

Moalboal is a cool town, which is the free-diving and scuba capital of Cebu. There are tons of hostels, hotels, and hostels here as well as being close to all the waterfalls and hikes in the region.

Here are my recommendations on where to stay in Moalboal depending on your budget.

I can tell you, I have snorkeled out the front of this place with turtles many times. For about $30 USD you get a private room with all of the facilities you need. Moped: The best way to get around Cebu Island is through moped/scooter rentals. A moped can be rented for about $8 a day but that price may come down if your rental is more than a week long. The roads aren’t always great to and from the waterfalls and hikes so drive safely. You will need your regular drivers license from your home country and a helmet to avoid any issues. Below are the other main transport options for Cebu.

• Tricycles : the most common means of private transportation in the Philippines, accommodating 2-4 passengers, more than a motorcycle. This allows you to hire a driver to transport you to various attractions and things to do in Cebu.
• The Habal Habal : essentially a “scooter taxi,” is an economical option for single passengers who don’t wish to rent their own vehicle.
• Jeepneys : vibrant buses used by locals for transportation in the Philippines. Operating on fixed routes, they provide a shared riding experience and offer a unique opportunity to interact with the local community. Expect to be crammed in like sardines but it’s the authentic transport mode for locals.
• Vans : available for transportation, typically offered by resorts, hotels, and private transportation companies. This option will be the most expensive, it can be a worthwhile choice during rainy weather or for larger groups.

hi I experienced that last April 30, 2023..extreme to the extreme LOL but its great experienced Tour guides is very helpful and funny . we are 7 in a group and my son really enjoyed it .

Every time I go on holidays, I check if you have been there before as your reccomendations are spot on and adventurous - just how I like it -If you are ever back at Cebu I reccomend doing wonderfalls in Algeria.

It is a canyon but they have just opened in for tourtist 2021 so there would be 10 visitors per day as not many people know about it. The scramble features are interesting, no shopping cart half way the canyon and it is so remote and beautiful. It has two parts as well so you can do part 1 one day and part 2 the other.

It was my favourite experience while staying in Moalboal .

Cebu Province is not just about Magellan’s Cross and the lechon of its capital city, swimming with sardines in Moalboal , or meeting with whale sharks in Oslob . In Samboan, a small town perched on a hill, you can find a bunch of waterfalls , and one of them is Aguinid Falls. 

Aguinid Falls is a paradise on Earth. Located in South Cebu , particularly in Barangay Tangbo, this waterfall is the perfect place to beat the heat and commune with nature. The water cascades down toward crystal turquoise pools encapsulated within lush greenery. 

Aguinid Falls is one of the most visited waterfalls in Cebu , boasting eight tiers—five of which are accessible to tourists, offering an unparalleled experience.

How to Go to Aguinid Falls

➡️from cebu city.

To get to Aguinid Falls from Cebu City, you need to take a jeepney, car, or Grab heading to Cebu South Bus Terminal near E-Mall ( see map ).

Then, ride a bus with the route to Bato via Barili and inform the conductor to drop you off at the trail leading to Aguinid Falls in Barangay Tangbo within the Samboan town proper. 

You can find signage at the basketball court, and for private vehicles, there is another way after this court. The fare is around 200 PHP (~4 USD), and your travel time is approximately 4 hours. 

➡️From Moalboal

The easiest way to get to Aguinid Falls from Moalboal is to rent a motorbike or scooter. It costs around 300 PHP (~6 USD) per day. 

If you are driving the scooter independently and not hiring a driver, you should start your journey from Moalboal’s Panagsama Beach area. To get to Samboan, you must head south along the Cebu South Road. Continue on this road. You shall pass by the Badian, Alegria, and Malabuyoc towns.

Upon reaching Samboan, look for the junction with a signage directing you to Aguinid Falls. The junction is just before you get to the Samboan town proper if you are approaching from the north. 

Turn right at this junction and simply follow the road. You will soon arrive at Aguinid Falls. It is recommended that you use the Google Maps or Waze app so you won’t get lost.

If you wish to get to Aguinid Falls from Moalboal by bus, ride a bus heading to Bato via Barili and ask to be dropped off at Aguinid Falls. The fare is around 70 PHP (~1.5 USD).

➡️From Oslob

The best and easiest way to reach Aguinid Falls from Oslob is to rent a motorbike or scooter. It costs around 300 PHP (~5-6 USD). Or you can charter a habal-habal (motorcycle taxi) to get you to the falls for 1,000 PHP (~17.5 USD). The travel time takes around 1.5-2 hours.

If you are driving the scooter independently and not hiring a driver, the path from Oslob to Aguinid Falls is easier because of its shorter distance from one another compared to the other origins discussed earlier. It will be a scenic drive around the island’s southern tip, passing by the beautiful Sumilon Island along the way. Be sure to open your Google Maps or Waze app!

If you wish to get to Aguinid Falls from Oslob by bus, take a bus going to Bato Port in Samboan. From there, you need to ride another bus going to Cebu via Barili. Tell the driver that you will alight at Aguinid Falls. The total journey by bus costs around 50 PHP (~1 USD).

As you reach the place, if you take the bus, you can walk or hire a motorcycle to take you to the registration area of Aguinid Falls. If you drove your own car or rented a motorbike, you can simply park your car or motorbike there.

Aguinid Falls Fees

The entrance fee to Aguinid Falls is 300 PHP (~5-6 USD). This includes compulsory safety equipment (wet shoes, helmet, and life jacket), two guides, and tips for the guides.

Aguinid Falls Opening Hours

Aguinid Falls is open from 6 AM to 6 PM daily except Mondays, which is the cleaning day.

What to Bring to Aguinid Falls

Before heading to Dao Falls, here’s a checklist of the things you need to bring on your hike.

• Trekking shoes or sandals
• Water bottle
• Waterproof phone case
• Microfiber towel

Trekking Aguinid Falls

After paying the entrance fee, you will start with a quick briefing with your guides. The walk to the first level is just simple. It takes around 15 minutes from the trailhead to the first level. You will be walking up the dry rock to the side of the falls.

Upon reaching this first level, you will find a large pool by a small waterfall, where you can swim. However, sadly, for those who like to dive into it, it is not deep enough to do so. You can swim here either before or after your hike.

Then, you will head to the second tier. This is the hardest level (you are just at level two, right?). Things here can get a little bit trickier. It requires you to walk up a steep and smooth rock in the middle of the waterfall.

Don’t worry because a rope is there to help you stay grounded, and the foothills are cut into the rock. As long as you are wearing the right shoes, getting your footing won’t be that difficult.

However, you need to maintain your balance especially when the waterfalls are coming at you. Follow your guide at all times. They will tell you where to put your feet.

Though all these levels belong to just one waterfall, each level seems to show off a different kind of personality. The third level is like a jungle paradise as the scene changes from the enormous waterfall to a milky blue river section covered in greenery.

The walk here is mostly through shallow pools, then up some rock. This tier is a nice place to take a shower in the waterfall if you feel like doing so. Also, there is a steep rock to climb at the side of this section, but there are footholds to guide you.

The fourth level is what cliff divers are waiting for. Here, unlike in the other levels earlier, the pool is deep enough to dive, plunge in, and swim. If you do not have the guts to cliff dive, you can just enjoy the views of the surroundings.

The fifth level, where the top of the falls is, is pretty impressive yet somewhat anticlimactic. The trek to this point is quite stunning, passing by several amazing falls and wading through a bright blue river. 

Once you reach this area, the falls are huge, but you can’t take a plunge here as the water is very shallow. You can sit on a rock or in the water and take in the views.

Your guide will tell you that there are more tiers these waterfalls have, but they are not accessible anymore for tourists for safety reasons.

Best Time to Visit Aguinid Falls

The best time to visit Aguinid Falls is during Cebu’s dry season, which runs from December to June. While you can still visit the falls during the rainy season, it may be harder to climb because of the higher water levels, and the trek may be more slippery.

7 AWESOME WATERFALLS IN SOUTH CEBU

It’s going to be really hard to write this travel guide without making a cheesy reference to chasing Cebu waterfalls, but I’ll give it my best shot. The waterfalls in South Cebu are easily the most spectacular we have ever come across, and the sheer number of incredible waterfalls packed into such a small area is ridiculous.

Having spent over a week exploring here, we wanted to compile a list of the best waterfalls in Cebu. While each waterfall is totally unique, they all have one thing in common, and that is the crazy blue water that flows down them. This part of the world is famous for its Gatorade blue water and it’s pretty special to see this amazing water cascade down hidden waterfalls, tucked away in the jungle. Cebu ended up being an unexpected highlight of our Philippines itinerary .

How to Get to South Cebu

Most people first arrive in to Cebu City. In order to get to Moalboal from Cebu, you need to reach the  Cebu South Bus Terminal . The easiest way to do this is to take a Grab, which is the Asian version of Uber, to the bus terminal.

The bus you need to take is the Bato via Barili bus and is run by Ceres Tours. This bus leaves from bay 4 of the Cebu South Bus Terminal. Busses run frequently throughout the day and into the evening until clear. This means that the busses run until there is no longer a queue of people waiting to travel.

We recommend travelling during the day if possible, as you will be unable to rely on catching a bus late in the evening. We caught our bus at 8:30pm and it may have been the last bus of the night.

The journey to  Moalboal should take around 2 hours and 45 minutes  and costs 156PHP ($3.05 USD) per person. Most of the busses are large, air conditioned coaches that make for a comfortable journey.

Once you reach Moalboal you will be dropped in the town centre. The main tourist area isn’t actually located in Moalboal centre, but at nearby Panagsama Beach. You will need to take a trike or habal habal to get here. If you arrive during the day, this trip should cost 50PHP ($1 USD) per person, however if you arrive late in the evening it will be more expensive. We paid 180PHP ($3.52 USD) for a trike at 11.30pm.

How to Get Around South Cebu

Although the waterfalls are concentrated in quite a small area, you still need to drive to visit each one and some are more easily accessible than others. There are several options for getting around all of these waterfalls, the first of which is to rent a scooter and drive yourself.

Scooter rental costs around 300PHP  ($6 USD) per day and the roads in Cebu are fairly well maintained. It isn’t too busy on the roads, making driving a scooter here pretty easy. While a couple of the waterfalls are located on some slightly worse roads, some are located just off of the main highway.

If you don’t feel confident riding a scooter yourself, you can pay to be driven around in a tricycle which can fit 2 – 3 people at a tight squeeze. This will tend to be more expensive than renting a scooter but still won’t break the bank.

7 Best Cebu Waterfalls

Our list of the best waterfalls in Cebu starts with our favourites and then as you get further down the list you come to our least favourite. We use the term least favourite lightly though as we genuinely recommend visiting every waterfall on this list if you have the time. We originally planned to stay for 2 nights in Moalboal and kept extending our stay so we could go and discover new waterfalls each day.

Kawasan falls, inambakan falls, cambais falls.

• Binalayan (Hidden) Falls

Kabutongan Falls

Our favourite falls in South Cebu! The Tangbo River cascades down 8 different levels to create these stunning waterfalls.  Aguinid Falls  was the best and most challenging waterfall adventure we had in the Philippines. The water cuts through the jungle, gushing down limestone rocks and into too many blue pools to keep count.

The entrance fee here is 60PHP ($1.17 USD) per person and you are required to take a guide here. On top of the entrance fee you will need to leave a tip for your guide as the entrance fee does not cover their wages. Aguinid is located about 1 hour and 20 minutes drive from Moalboal.

Usually you are only able to climb the first 5 levels, however you may be able to convince your guide to take you to all 8 levels like we did. The main waterfall is at level 5 so don’t fret if they won’t take you any further.

Again we only had to share this amazing place with a few people and we even received fresh coconuts at the end. Scrambling up these waterfalls made for an epic day out and if you only have the chance to visit one waterfall in the region, make sure it is this one.

When people are deciding what to do in Cebu this is usually at the top of their lists. Kawasan Falls is probably the most famous and popular waterfall in the Philippines and is regarded as the best waterfall in Cebu. The water flows down through the mountains into numerous Gatorade blue pools. It is a seriously beautiful place.

The epic thing about Kawasan is that you can actually go on a canyoneering tour. You start high up the waterfall and make your way to the pools at the bottom by swimming, sliding and cliff jumping. It is an adrenaline filled adventure that makes for a super fun day out. The expert guides know all the best and most thrilling ways down and will guide you through these amazing falls. Canyoneering is always a good time and to be able to do it somewhere so spectacular makes it next level good.

If you don’t fancy canyoneering, then it is possible to just visit the main waterfalls and swim in the blue pools. We chose to do this on our second trip here as we had already done the canyoneering experience. You can drive to Kawasan Falls and pay the entrance fee, 45PHP ($0.88 USD) per person, and explore the bottom section of the multi tiered cascading waterfalls yourself.

There are several waterfalls to enjoy and once you make your way passed the main falls at the bottom, the crowds start to thin out and you can even find little pools to chill out in with no other people.

We recommend canyoneering here as it is so much fun and probably the most beautiful place on earth you can do an activity like this. But if you decide against canyoneering, a visit to Kawasan Falls should still be one of your main priorities.

After Kawasan Falls this is probably the most remarkable of the waterfalls in South Cebu in terms of sheer size and scale. The main waterfall at the bottom level is huge and it thunders down into a stunning aquamarine pool. You can swim under the waterfall and into the cave behind the falls.

Inambakan Falls is actually spread across 5 different levels. As very few people venture past the main waterfall at the bottom, we actually had the upper levels all to ourselves. Make sure you hike to the top and enjoy each level of the falls. It is a steep 15-minute climb to reach the top of the falls and you make your way back down from here.

The upper levels have more of an emerald green water colour as opposed to the magnificent blue of the main waterfall. However, it is the fun of getting down the falls that make it such a great experience. There are some cliff jumps, caves and numerous different pools to enjoy.

Our favourite part of the falls was at level two where we could clamber up onto the rocks at the base of one of the waterfalls and let the water rush over and around us. It was epic. Plan to spend around 1.5 hours here.

Entrance to Inambakan Falls costs 50PHP ($1 USD) per person and we also paid 15PHP ($0.30 USD) for parking. You have to take a guide with you to explore the top levels of the falls and be sure to tip your guide.

Dau Falls, with its canyons, is one of the more unique and spectacular Cebu waterfalls. The 20-minute hike through the jungle to reach the main waterfall was just as impressive as the falls themselves. We crossed a rickety looking bamboo bridge, walked through the jungle, across streams and through the canyons and ravines.

It really was an awesome hike and the canyons that the river flows through are so different to all of the other waterfalls in Cebu. There are four different pools to swim in plus several waterfalls to enjoy. The final waterfall is the best and it cascades into a blue pool which is ideal for swimming in.

The entrance fee for Dau Falls is 60PHP ($1.17 USD) per person and even though there isn’t really any need for a guide you are required to take one with you. There was also a 20PHP (0.40 USD) fee for parking our scooter.

Dau Falls is a 1 hour 15-minute drive from Moalboal. It is ok to wear flip flops as it is an easy hike to the falls. Plan for at least 1 hour to enjoy Dau Falls.

Cambais Falls allows you to enjoy 3 levels of waterfalls but offers a more DIY adventure than the likes of Kawasan Falls. You can cliff jump, rock climb, swim and slide between the different pools. It is a remote waterfall surrounded by lush jungle greenery which just enhances the sense of adventure you feel when exploring these magnificent falls.

Cambais Falls is located on the road out towards Osmeña Peak and Casino Peak, rounding out a great day trip and making it the perfect spot to cool down after a couple of hikes. Entrance fee is 50PHP ($1 USD) per person and you are not required to take a guide. If you decide to take a guide you will need to leave them a tip.

Cambais Falls is one of the more off the beaten path waterfalls in the area and you should only have to share it with a few other people.

Please note that that Cambais is closed on the first Monday of every month to allow regeneration of the area.

Binalayan Falls (Hidden Falls)

Binalayan Falls  isn’t one of the must see Cebu waterfalls but if you have some extra time it is definitely worth checking it out. It is right next to  Aguinid Falls  so we easily squeezed it into our South Cebu itinerary. If you are in the area it is worth making a stop.

It is a 15-minute walk to reach the first waterfall. Here you can swing out over the water on the tire swing, swim in the pool and enjoy an aqua massage from the small waterfall. The second waterfall is the main attraction though.

The water splits into three different streams and flows down the 10-metre drop to the pool below. There are several cliff jumping spots at varying heights and if you are feeling limber you can climb up into a cave behind the waterfall with the help of one of the guides. After enjoying the view from behind the falls you can jump through the waterfall and into the pool below.

It costs 60PHP ($1.17 USD) per person and parking our scooter cost 10PHP ($0.20 USD). Even though it is a straight walk through the forest you are required to take a guide with you and you will need to tip the guide.

Binalayan Falls are just a few minutes’ drive from Aguinid Falls and you only need an hour to experience these falls. If you have the time we recommend making the short trip as it is still a really cool waterfall.

These falls are just a 10-minute drive from Inambakan Falls and perfect to do on the same day. These were probably the least beautiful falls that we visited – although keep in mind we are comparing it to the brilliant blues of Kawasan and Cambais – and that they are still in no means average. They are definitely still worth doing.

It was the most active and challenging experience as most of your time is spent in the water, clambering over rocks, wading through waterfalls and swimming from one spot to the next.

You swim and climb your way across 4 different levels, until you reach the main waterfall at the top. There is a 20-foot cliff jump into the deep green pool, a large cave you can swim into behind the falls and the main waterfall itself is really cool.  

On the way back down there are some other smaller falls, natural rock slides and some smaller cliff jumps including one into the emerald pool at the bottom of the falls. The return trek up the waterfall and back took us just over 1 hour.

The entrance fee is 100PHP ($2 USD) per person and you are required to take a guide and wear a life jacket.

Where to Stay in South Cebu

In our opinion,  Moalboal is the best place to stay when exploring the southern region of Cebu . It has all the amenities and everything you need to make an epic trip. Most importantly, it is within easy driving distance of all the amazing waterfalls in South Cebu, making it the perfect hub to base yourself. There are lots of great places to eat, strong WIFI connection, plenty of other travellers and a wide range of choices for accommodation.

Budget :  J&C Guesthouse  – Our choice for budget accommodation and where we stayed while in Moalboal. A private double room with air conditioning cost 1000PHP ($19.56 USD) and this price also included breakfast. It is a short walk to the beach and close to lots of good restaurants.

Mid-range:   Moalboal Shaka Traveler’s Place  – If you want to stay right on the beach but not break the bank then this is the place for you. They have their own private beach area and a great terrace to watch sunset each night. Shaka also offers dorm rooms for those who want a more social atmosphere.

Luxury:   The Blue Orchid Resort  – A much more luxurious way to enjoy Moalboal. They have an awesome pool, an on-site dive centre and they are also located right on the water.

Final Thoughts

You may think that visiting all the waterfalls in South Cebu will get repetitive, but we guarantee you’ll enjoy visiting every single one of them. They all offer a different experience, some are more off the beaten path and are more DIY, while others are easy to get to and have guides to take you through the whole thing.

Take an extra few days to really explore the incredible Cebu waterfalls and some of the other amazing hikes, beaches and snorkelling that this island has to offer.

A ‘local’ style breakfast along the way fuelled us for the wonderful experience which began with a scooter ride up the road, followed by a zip wire ride (worth the small extra fee) to the start of the canyon. I was pretty nervous beforehand but the instructors were great and I felt like I knew what I was doing when I got in the water. I couldn't believe the size of the whale sharks! Once we arrived in Bohol we were greeted by Bing and we were off. Bing was very knowledgeable and a local to the island. Our driver Fidel was quiet but cracked a few smiles throughout the day.
