Excursion Overview

Join the fun on a guided driving tour across the beautiful chichagof island.

Chichagof Island, where Icy Strait Point situated, is near the entrance of Port Frederick Bay. This body of water is known to the Indigenous Tlingit people as the Bay of Bears due to its abundance of salmon. The Bay of Bears contains six major salmon streams. Once the yearly salmon spawn begins, the streams are teeming with wildlife looking for fish. You'll have a chance to see bears as they attempt to fatten up for the winter, and other wildlife like river otters, mink, bald eagles, and martens. The tour begins from Icy Strait Point. You'll drive around the island in a passenger van, searching for bears, while your tour guide narrates the scenery around you. They'll talk about their lives in rural Alaska and their experiences with local wildlife. Imagine living in a town with more bears than people! One of our guests' favorite things to do on tour is to pick their own berries and herbs. Your expert guide will describe the medicinal purposes of the local plant life, explaining the healing properties and nutritional benefits. Some of the wild berries growing here contain more nutrients than any cultivated berries per pound. This tour is very special, providing an experience that you won't find anywhere else. You will not regret getting off the beaten path and joining this experience!

Depart from the Excursions Hub with your lifelong Hoonah residential guides

Guest Reviews

On oct 2023.

We were spoiled and happened to be the only guests who booked a tour on the day we were at port in Icy Strait Point--it also happened to be their last tour day for the season. What a treat for us! We thoroughly LOVED hearing the stories and seeing the sights that the guides shared with us. They are so knowledgeable about the area, the animals, the flora and fauna, and the local history--being longtime locals themselves. We saw a juvenile brown bear, several Sitka deer, many squirrels and birds, and BEAUTIFUL scenery all around! Being with our local guides was so comfortable--like being with relatives you forgot you had! We cannot recommend this tour and these amazing guides enough. Do it! You won't regret it!

On Sep 2023

Our tour with John and Marylyn was amazing and the highlight of our trip. Both of them have spent decades living on the island and there knowledge of the area was evident in our tour. Not only did we see three bears, but also harvested local herbs and berries. It was a tour for all the senses.

Marilyn and John were our guides and they were the best! They had so much knowledge about everything Alaska! They were able to take us to the perfect spots to see bears in the wild. Being locals and full time residents they were able to share so many cultural ways! Ask for John and Marilyn by name!!

We were blessed to have John and Marilyn as our driver and guides. As local First Nation and Tlinglit people, they are extremely knowledgeable about their environment and the flora, fauna and animals. I was amazed at the variety of berries that can be foraged for, more than any place I know. I always enjoy learning as much as i can about any location, and medicinal plants and others. We saw several squirrels, and bear, that we were able to get out of the van, (very quietly) and take photos. They were both on the lookout for recent bear signs during the whole drive and conferring with the other drivers to obtain the most viewings possible. The location has a beauty all its own and one that I will not forget, thanks to John and Marilyn.

On Aug 2023

I cannot emphasize how amazing our tour was and how much we enjoyed spending the morning with John the tour company owner. This tour was the highlight of our trip. John is not only a friendly and fun guy but really knows his stuff. We were able to see five total bears, two sets of a mother and cub and one male bear. He also brought us to a beautiful spot where we could try local berries fresh off of the plants. John's van is also incredibly clean for something that takes tourists around the natural beauty of the Alaskan mountains. I would really recommend this tour to anyone who wants to learn about the area from someone who lives there and who wants to really enjoy nature. John is so knowledgeable and we felt safe with him even while we were (somewhat) close to the bears. 10/10 recommend.

Wilderness Tour and Brown Bear Search – LEO, Military, Teacher Discount!

chichagof island tour

Description

This Alaskan wilderness and bear search tour is offered on Chichagof Island, a one-of-a-kind location with the highest population of bears per square mile of any place on Earth. Depending on the season, catch the bears coming out of hibernation and looking for food; or later on in the season when the bears are mating and eating grasses on the tidal flats. Older males fight each other for dominance and mating rights with the females, who at times are not receptive and force the male to give chase. This is truly an experience for the books, and cameras.

Why take this tour?

In the pristine wilderness of Hoonah, Alaska lies an island known for its year-round beauty, massive bear population, and rich wildlife. The vast majority of which reside in Alaskan’s pure untouched forests teeming with bears or deer depending on what you're looking for - there's plenty to see here! The brown bear reigns supreme as king but other animals like seabirds can also be spotted during your tour--it truly offers something unique from all walks of nature when it comes down how diverse nature really is at this remote destination. The Chichagof Island has the highest population of bears per square mile anywhere on Earth. This Alaskan wilderness and bear search tour is offered May through September during months with highest probability for sightings, such as late April or early May when they're coming out from hibernation mode looking to find food, while mating occurs between June into August. This time period offers for a chance to see males fight other alpha males over females who can be unreceptive at times and force the males to give chase! With years of experience, your guides will know exactly where to go for the best chance to spot a bear. In July, the salmon start their migration from the ocean up the rivers and we find the bears feeding in coastal rivers and streams. In August and September, the salmon have made it further up the rivers to shallow streams where the bears chase them. Depending on the month and the weather, the wildlife can be found in different locations throughout the island. Join us as we search for these amazing creatures! This tour is located on the Tongass National Forest under special use permit from the Forest Service, USDA. Icy Strait Shore Excursions is an equal opportunity provider.

I absolutely loved this tour. We got to to see a mommy bear and her 2 cubs. She was just walking on the street. Then we went down to a river and saw a couple more bears. I would highly recommend this tour.

There were six of us on this beautiful tour of Icy Strait. The guide, Stu, was very informative. We didn't see any bears, but the forest, the trees, the shoreline, were all wonderful to see. I would definitely suggest this trip being done in the early morning, if possible. The bears are more likely to be viewed, but then again, they are wildlife and come and go as they please. We all did enjoyed this tour. Thank you for a great afternoon.

Our guide was very friendly and informative. He gave lots of information about the two tribes on the island and told some interesting stories. When we reached the ocean we stopped to stretch our legs and take a short break - we were lucky enough to see 2 orcas in the distance. Back on the road to search for bears - we were about to give up because we had only seen poop signs that bears had been on the road. When we were almost back to town a cub crossed the road in front of us....then a bigger bear came out of the woods, it stayed in the road for a bit and then crossed completely but still stayed on the hillside. When stopped and watched it and the cub for a while and took some neat pictures.

Saw a bald eagle early. Then orcas in the bay, the 2 bears at the very end then a black tail deer. Driver Gary I think was very informative. This a long trip down twisty turny hilly bumpy dirt roads. Be ready for that. Better this one in a small van vs the large bus. Bring binoculars.

Our chief and guide was excellent. So very knowledgeable and great sense of humour. Was determined and patient to find us bears, which he did. A superb trip, best one we have done whilst on our Cruise. Thank you

Finding our tour operator right off the ship was super simple. We were greeted by our driver Stu as soon as we showed up to the tour Excursion area. Stu made the tour excellent. He is an Alaskan native with tons of history and experiences to share. He is also a Tlingit cultural leader. Having a local tour guide really can make all the difference. Our tour began with a short drive through town and then into the forest. we quickly came across 2 bears and we were able get out of the van to watch them for a good period of time as they slowly made their way from one area to the next. Unfortunately then a local with their barking dog scared them off. So then we headed out to a different area to try and find the mama and her cubs that had been spotted the previous day. Unfortunately we weren't able to find them, but we did see some other Wildlife... deer and eagles. During the search for bears Stu is constantly providing interesting information about the culture, bears, other wildlife, and also the natural medicinal value in all of the plants that you are seeing on the tour. Very interesting. We then made our way back to the area where we saw the two bears earlier and we were able to spot them again just a little ways from where they previously were. So we got out of the van again to watch them until they trotted off into the forest. Then we were able to get pictures of an eagle that was resting on a mound about 20 yards from where we were. Awesome. The only thing that I didn't like was that we didn't get out to do any hiking through the forest itself to get to see the wildlife. The tour is strictly done by driving in the van to the areas where the bears typically will come out of the forest to get water, munch on vegetation, etc. However, with that being said at least the van is very comfortable and small with only about 10 people in your tour versus the cruise ship buses that we saw that have 40 + people. Overall this was a great experience and Stu did not disappoint.

Gary was a super guide. He cannot control the wildlife, but we saw three brown bears. One of them came right up to our vehicle before turning into the woods. We loved it.

Though we saw nary a bear (too early in the season, no salmon running), Gary was extremely informative, telling us great stories about his family and their culture. Highly recommend!

While there is not promise to see a bear, they try hard to see something. We saw deer, including a fawn, and when we didn't see any bear, we went to a harbor to see whales, which also didn't show. We retuned at a fast clip, and half way back, w member of our tour shouted BEAR! We backed up, but there was no more bear to be seen. We continued at a fast clip, and then BEAR!! This time we backed up and the biggest bear was just munching away. We watched it for a while and then headed back. The driver gave us an option to go back or be dropped off at Hannoh, as the shuttle back to the ship was free using their tour. Driver was informative about bears and his eskimo culture and struggles with the Icy Point Corp. Sadly the different tour companies are not cooperative nor friendly with each other. They do not share bathrooms nor information on bear sightings. A different experience than what we had in Ketchikan where everyone worked together for guests and their experience. The negativity and non friendly behaviour kinda tarnishes the experience. So while we saw a bear (very cool) we are unlikely to return to Icy Point.

Awesome tour. Our guide was Stew, also known as Bear1. He's the cultural leader for the Tlinket Raven Clan. He found the bears that no one else seemed to be finding. Loved hearing about his life and the organization of his clan as we searched for bears.

The guide could not have been better. This trip was not in an overloaded bus from the cruise ship but rather a nice van holding no more than 6 people. The guide spent extra effort finding the right spot where bears could or would be seen. I highly recommend this trip.

it was awesome our guide said they had not seen any bear in couple of days so we started out on our trip saw dear along the way came across a group who had just seen a bear cross the road waited did not see the bear so we moved on our guide said there might be some bears at beach so off we went when we got almost to the beach when we saw 4 big brown bears and a cub they were about 50 yards away got some great pictures of grizzly bears was a great sight see bear fishing for salmon

Of course, one always want to see many bears, but we were fortunate to see a bear with her cubs. Very impressive with Stuart our guide and his comments during the tour. Your representative was there to direct us to our tour, and it left in a timely fashion. We only had 10 people on our van, and certainly from a price point as well as not being herded like cattle into a large bus made this tour much more enjoyable.

Our guide was a chief of one of the Tlingit tribes, and had great stories about the history of his people, their culture and practices. Oh, and he found bears! Probably the best of our several excursions during the Alaska cruise

Chichagof Island

Chichagof Island, or Shee Kaax, is the fifth-largest island in the U.S. and is famous for having a large population of brown bears. In fact, it has the highest density of bears per square mile anywhere on earth. The community of Hoonah is located at the northern part of the island. The rest of the Chichagof island is uninhabited wilderness, full of wildlife.

There are tour options to visit Chicagof Island from Juneau and Hoonah. Check out Hoonah ATV Tours to explore the island on your own ATV.

You can also take the Alaska Brown Bear and Wilderness Tour with Hoonah Travel Adventures. It will take you on a 3 hour tour searching for Brown Bear on the island. The guides are experts at knowing the bears patterns and although sightings are not guaranteed, they are likely.

Chichagof Island is a historic watering place for Soapy Smith’s gang in the late 1800s.

There is very limited accommodations on the island in Hoonah.

You can reach the island by  small commuter airlines from Juneau and the Alaska Marine Highway Ferry System, which stops at the town of Hoonah.

Flightseeing Information

We highly recommend travel insurance for participants of this tour – including AYT’s own Save My Butt insurance.

Weather in Alaska changes by the minute, and there’s always a risk you might get stuck in Hoonah.  The airport can get weathered in, or even the seas might be too rough for the ferry.

In the event of a cancellation or delay, AYT will do its best to get you home, however meals, hotel, and other expenses are your responsibility.

Save My Butt insurance will cover the cost of a hotel and any change/cancel fees associated with getting you back to Juneau.  It does NOT cover lost wages or missed excursions/tours/flights.  AYT will advocate on your behalf to get those items rebooked, however.

Legal stuff

The booking engine, located top RIGHT, is where you will start.  The system will provide you an ESTIMATED cost of the tour based on your customizations and input.  The rates are based on availability & subject to change.  Should the final price not be acceptable, we do allow you a full refund, no questions, of the deposit!

For overnight & same day travel excursions, we will lock in any/all air or sea travel first, and secure hotel space if overnight was requested. Most tours & excursions will be confirmed at a later date, but not less than 20 days prior to departure.

AYT’s Travel Designers will monitor your flight schedules before and during your trip.  We will work proactively when there are schedule changes or issues – including weather or other issues. We’ll work with you and our vendors to ensure you have a fantastic vacation.

Any upgrades to packages components will require a reprice of the package.  Substitutions are allowed.

Final price is dependent on variables, such as airfare & hotel availability, and government taxes & fees.  Once the travel designer & you have confirmed the options, AYT will require an additional payment.

We HIGHLY encourage you to purchase travel insurance – either individually for this trip or an annual plan.  We can provide you a quote by clicking on the check-box in the booking engine.

This tour requires a $100 USD deposit per person, plus tax, to begin the process.  This deposit is fully refundable if we are not able to accommodate your package due to an increase in price or availability.

Once a travel designer has provided you with the confirmed package and pricing, we will need to process another payment.

Guests have the option to pay for your package in full or in two payments:

  • $150 USD per guest due now
  • 30 days before travel: Final Payment

We will automatically charge your credit/debit card based on this schedule, along with a text or e-mail receipt.  You can also opt to update or change your payment at any time.

chichagof island tour

We are NOT able to upgrade to the fast ferry once we have booked your standard ferry reservations.

Name changes & fixes are subject to airline/ferry rules.  Name changes on some excursions may incur a $10 fee.  It is YOUR responsibility to ensure that you have provided accurate and legal names of all travelers.  Please verify the names on all receipts & itinerary. Covid-19 remains a concern among all of us, however the State of Alaska no longer has any COVID-19 mandates or requirements.

We offer hand hankys, as a gift, to any of our guests who request them.  These are 2″ square fabric pieces that can be used to open doors and reduce your touchpoints while on a cruise or train – which significantly decrease your chances of picking up germs.

Joe was amazing gave us so much information about the island and where to go. The Atv itself was equipped with a preprogramed GPS for the hot spots but you could go anywhere if you wanted. The island is beautiful. This was by far the best excursion. Thank you Joe!

We road all over the island. It was a blast, we saw deer and bears. We also took extended trip. 1 1/2 hour well worth it.

The atv was fast and reliable, with a GPS system with preset destinations to follow and get back. We had a blast, we loved going at our own pace and going where we wanted. Couldn't have been more pleased, great experience at a great price. Worth every penny.

Chichagof Island Birding & Nature Adventure

chichagof island tour

Trip Highlights

Nesting pigeon guillemots, nesting bald eagles, salmon spawning in the rivers, frequent brown bear sightings, a ½-mile walk through varied habitat, including some old growth spruce and hemlock, description.

In the lush vegetation of Chichagof Island, near Hoonah, Alaska, where Brown Bears outnumber humans, birding is an adventure! Your expert bird guide is also a naturalist, and you will learn about the natural and human history of the area, the plants, animals, fish, forests, and rivers. Pigeon Guillemots, Bald Eagles, Varied Thrushes, Steller’s Jays, Chestnut-backed Chickadees and Red-breasted Sapsuckers are some of the favorites, but this is so much more than just another birding tour. Come experience the vibrant ecological web created here, in Hoonah, Alaska, near Icy Strait Point where the towering temperate forests of Chichagof Island tangle with the rich marine life of Icy Strait.

Icy Strait Point Excursions Hub

Why take this tour?

Do you feel like you haven’t truly experienced a place until you get to know the birds, plants, and animals? If so, we think you will love this excursion. At Icy Strait Birding Tours we love sharing our wild little corner of paradise, in Hoonah Alaska near Icy Strait Point with visitors from all over the world.

This land-based tour begins with a shuttle pick-up at the Icy Strait Point Excursion Hub, where you will be given a ride into the town of Hoonah (1.5 miles from Icy Strait Point), to meet your guide and transfer to the 15-passenger tour van. We will begin by making a few stops around town, including at a Bald Eagle nest and a small Pigeon Guillemot rookery. While at the rookery, we will use our high-powered spotting scope to scan the waters of Port Frederick for other seabirds, ducks, seals, or sea lions. Often Humpback Whales can be seen feeding right offshore! Next we will leave town, driving about 10 miles into the wilderness on gravel roads. Enroute to a walking trail, we will make a few stops at a scenic estuary, salmon streams, and anywhere that we encounter wildlife or birds of interest. Brown Bears, Sitka Black-tailed Deer, and American Mink are some of the most common mammals we encounter. The walking trail is where we see most of the tour’s smaller birds, such as sparrows, warblers, chickadees, swifts, wrens, flycatchers, kinglets, jays, and woodpeckers. We walk at a “birder’s pace” through a mixture of wooded habitats including some towering old growth Sitka Spruce and Western Hemlock! Your guide will identify plants along the way and explain their traditional uses.

The trail winds down a 100ft hill before opening into a beautiful coastal uplift meadow, where we pause to enjoy the view and check for grassland birds before heading back to the van.

This is a perfect tour for birders, nature nerds and the insatiably curious. We know you will leave with a greater appreciation for Alaska’s rainforest ecosystem, but we hope you also will be inspired to learn more about the nature in your own backyard when you get home!

This tour is located in the Tongass National Forest, under special use permit from the Forest Service, USDA.

Field guide booklet to 50 bird species and other wildlife commonly seen on our tours. (Yours to keep, and a handy way to keep track of your sightings!)

Spotting scope, a few trekking poles, pick up at icy strait point excursion hub, all guests get a "return to ship anytime shuttle pass" so you can explore hoonah, local naturalist guide, back to ship on-time guaranteed, 6.5% city sales tax, drinks & snacks - we encourage guest to bring a full reusable water bottle., gratuity - never expected - always appreciated if we did a good job, $6.59 u.s. forest service national park fee, frequently asked questions, is this tour just for birders, do i need to bring binos, should i bring a spotting scope, what are my chances of seeing a puffin, things to know, mobility issues.

Guests must be able to climb in and out of a van several times throughout the tour & this tour includes a ½-mile walk on an uneven gravel path with some hills.

What to pack

We highly recommend bringing a rain jacket and waterproof footwear on your cruise and using them if the forecast for the day of your tour shows rain. If it has been raining a lot in the days before the tour, the trail will have some puddles.

Staying in the Vehicle

Guests will not be allowed to remain in the van while the rest of the group walks the trail, so this tour is not recommended for guests with walking difficulties.

Cancellation Policy

To receive a full refund guests may cancel up to 24hrs before the date of their experience. If your cruise ship is scheduled to come to our port and does not make it to our port, or we have to cancel, this would also be a 100% refund. If you book for the wrong port and do not give the appropriate 24 hour notice No Refund will be given, so please. double check the port and date before booking. If you book a party of X and only show up with a party of Y, and do not give the appropriate notice, No Refund will be given. There will be no refund for cancelations less than 24hrs from the date of the expereince. We need at least this small period of time to try and sell last minute abandoned slots. Thank you for understanding! ***There is a booking fee applied to all online bookings. This fee will not be refunded on partial cancellations. It is refunded on full cancellations. We unfortunately have no control over this as a business.***
