How to Withdraw Money From Your Bank

There are multiple ways to withdraw money from your bank account, especially with the digital banking tools available today. You can withdraw cash from your bank account at an ATM or nearby branch of your bank, or you can directly transfer your money using online banking services and tools.

Withdraw money from an ATM

If you have a checking account or a savings account that offers ATM cards, you can make withdrawals at any ATM. You simply insert your debit or ATM card and verify your identity by using your 4-digit PIN.

You may encounter certain limits when withdrawing cash from an ATM. Banks can set daily withdrawal limits to help prevent fraud and theft, and individual ATMs may have lower limits set at the discretion of the ATM owner.

Using ATMs associated with your bank is typically the best way to avoid ATM fees. Using other ATMs may cost a fee from your bank and/or the ATM owner, although some bank accounts, such as the Citigold Account, will reimburse.

All Citi checking account members can enjoy access to one of the largest networks of fee-free Citibank ATMs in the U.S.

Do you need a debit card to withdraw money from an ATM?

You typically need a debit or ATM card to withdraw money from an ATM. The card and the PIN both serve to protect your identity and prevent fraud. However, some ATMs now offer cardless withdrawal options, usually by connecting to either a bank's mobile app or the digital wallet of your choice.

Withdraw money in person from the bank

You can also withdraw cash in person at your local bank branch. There are two ways to do this:

  • Write a check out to cash: Filling out a personal check and having "cash" as the payee line can let you access money from your account.
  • Talk to a teller: Money can be withdrawn directly via a bank teller, although you will need to provide a proof of identity such as your Debit card and PIN or a government-issued ID.

Withdrawing money from a savings account vs a checking account

Checking accounts make it easy to access and withdraw your money when you need it. All Citi checking accounts come with a debit card that lets you withdraw money easily at any ATM or Citi branch. You can also use a debit card to make direct transactions with most vendors.

Saving accounts also offer several ways to easily access your money. Funds can be withdrawn by visiting any Citi branch to access the funds in your Citi savings account. Citi savings accounts linked to Checking accounts can transfer funds between the accounts with no transfer fee and funds can be accessed as soon as the transfer is approved.

How many times can you withdraw money from your savings account each month?

Many bank accounts will restrict the amount of times you can withdraw money each month before they begin to charge a fee. This is to encourage using your savings account to save, rather than as a daily banking account. Citi does not limit withdrawals from savings accounts.

Withdrawing money from an online bank account

If you have a bank account that you primarily access online without a local branch, there are still several ways to access your funds.

Many online banks have a network of free ATMs through a partnership. This allows you to withdraw cash at certain ATMs.

You can also transfer money to another account or pay bills directly using direct transfers from your online account. Your bank may allow e-Checks and/or instant transfers through their mobile app or online dashboard.

Other ways to withdraw money from your bank account

Cashback with your debit card.

Some banks will allow you to withdraw small values of cash back when shopping at certain vendors. This cash back amount will be charged as a purchase, and you will receive the cash immediately.

Mobile apps

The best mobile banking apps offer multiple ways to easily transfer funds. The Citi mobile banking app comes with Zelle, offering instant digital transfers.

Write a check

Writing a check is a safe way to transfer funds between people and make purchases, but it can also be used to withdraw cash. Simply write a check out to "cash" as the payee and deposit it at a local bank branch.

Open an account with Citi

Cit provides digital access to your savings and checking accounts. Plus, you can access your cash easily with over 65,000 fee-free ATMs nationwide. Open an account online for these benefits or you can visit your local branch.

Claim is based on locations in the United States where customers can make cash withdrawals with no surcharge (usage) fee by the ATM operator. Citibank customers can get cash, get information and make transfers between their eligible linked Citibank accounts with no surcharge fee when they use their Citibank ® Banking Card at ATMs in the U.S. located at Citibank branches, ATMs at select retail store locations, and ATMs participating in the MoneyPass ® Network; regular account charges apply. ATMs in retail stores and at other non-Citi locations are not owned or operated by Citibank and offer fewer functions. 10 tips to save on overseas ATM withdrawals this summer

People in a line at an ATM

No matter how much you plan ahead, you'll often need to withdraw money in the local currency when you're overseas. Of course, the U.S. dollar is accepted in some countries and you'll want to have a credit card on you. However, there might be situations where that will just not work — and the local currency (in cash) is the only accepted form of payment.

Think of taxi rides, the corner store, tips and excursions — and much more. You never know when the need for cash (in the local currency) will come up, so it pays to be prepared by having a debit card that won't charge exorbitant fees when taking cash out of the ATM.

So before you get on your next international flight, here are a number of ways to prepare in advance tof ensure you have cash on hand while overseas.

What is an ATM foreign transaction fee?

An ATM foreign transaction fee is a fee you pay for using an ATM abroad. Banks have varying policies on fees you will pay for using an ATM that isn't their own, which is typically a flat fee when you are in the U.S. If you're using an another bank's ATM abroad, you may pay this flat fee (often around $5) plus a 1%-3% foreign conversion fee for using an ATM dispensing a currency other than U.S. Dollars.

Know if your credit card charges an ATM foreign transaction fee

citibank travel card atm withdrawal

There are plenty of reasons to hold and use travel rewards cards , but they shouldn't be your go-to when it comes to withdrawing cash at the ATM. Even if you use a card with no foreign transaction fees , the ATM withdrawal will likely entail a large cash advance fee , as they consider the money withdrawn as a loan.

And it gets worse: There's no grace period on cash advances, so you'll be incurring interest charges from the day of the withdrawal, usually at a rate that's even higher than the purchase rate.

Even if you are using a travel rewards credit card that refunds ATM fees worldwide, such as the Chase Sapphire Preferred Card , the money withdrawn is typically considered a cash advance. Although you won't have to pay the ATM fee, the interest fees can quickly add up.

Choose the right debit card to save on ATM fees when traveling

There are three ways you could be hit with fees when using your debit card overseas. First, your bank could charge you a fee for using an out-of-network ATM — both at home and at ATMs abroad. Second, the bank that owns the ATM could tack on additional fees. Finally, you can be charged foreign transaction fees at the ATM, just as you can when making credit card purchases.

Avoid debit cards that charge out-of-network fees

Before you leave home, you'll want to make sure you have a debit card that will not charge you any fees.

There's nothing worse than being charged twice to use your ATM card at an out-of-network machine (once by your bank and once by the ATM owner). To avoid this, open an account that doesn't impose out-of-network fees and ensure this applies not just at ATMs in the U.S. but also in other countries. One great option is to get a Capital One 360 Checking account. This card will not charge you any fees on withdrawals, even if it is out of network.

Use a debit card that's part of a large network, including ATMs abroad

One way to avoid the fees from out-of-network transactions is to use a debit card that's part of a large, international network.

One popular option for those traveling abroad is to have a SoFi Money Checking account . The debit card that comes with the account reimburses account holders at any of Allpoint's 55,000+ network ATMs — available both domestically and abroad.

Related: 3 banks travelers should use to save money on fees

Find a card that reimburses ATM fees

Several banks and credit unions offer reimbursements for ATM fees charged by other banks. So even though your bank might not charge you a fee, you could be hit by the bank operating the ATM. Fortunately, many banks will reimburse those fees — some up to a certain amount per month; others are unlimited.

A great option is the Schwab Bank High Yield Investor Checking account . With this debit card option, you'll receive unlimited ATM fee reimbursements — both domestically and abroad. It's also a great card to use abroad if you only have a credit card that charges foreign transaction fees, since this card waives those fees on ATM withdrawals and debit card purchases. We still recommend traveling overseas with a credit card that offers no foreign transaction fees , so you can earn points and miles on purchases that you can pay for on your card.

Watch out for ATM foreign transaction fees

When you're taking out smaller amounts of money, a 3% foreign transaction fee is far preferable to a $3 ATM fee. But if you need to withdraw hundreds of dollars outside of the U.S., you should look for a debit card with no foreign transaction fees on ATM withdrawals and on purchases. This includes debit cards from Capital One, Charles Schwab and Discover.

Avoid changing money at the airport

citibank travel card atm withdrawal

If there's one place where you're guaranteed to get the worst deal, it's at the arrivals area of an international airport. Here, you'll usually find the highest ATM fees, the least-favorable exchange rates and the highest likelihood of being short-changed. Try to avoid exchanging money at international train stations and ferry ports as well.

However, using the ATM at the airport may sometimes be your safest bet and may be a necessity. First, there should be security personnel nearby, which should increase your safety while using the ATM. Additionally, you may need cash before heading outside. If you're taking a taxi or public transit to your hotel, you may need local currency to pay. In these situations, you may need to use an airport ATM out of obligation.

If you have a card that will reimburse the withdrawal fee at ATMs abroad, then the fee doesn't matter as much. If you're in need of cash right away, make sure to check the conversion rate before withdrawing and choose the best-value option if the airport has more than one ATM network available.

What to know before using ATMs in different regions

Regardless of where you're traveling, a general rule of thumb is to always use ATMs in public spaces where you feel safe and secure. Be sure to check the card reader for anything suspicious such as card skimmers , so you don't become a victim of identity theft. Finally, always be aware of your surroundings when withdrawing money and entering secure personal information. Make sure no one is watching you, and be sure to cover your PIN when entering it.

Here are some pointers for those traveling through different regions:

Similar to the U.S., ATMs are nearly everywhere and not too hard to find. Europe hasn't completely adopted paperless payments in the way the U.S. has, so it's always good to have some cash in your wallet when traveling through the region. This is especially important if you plan to travel to smaller towns or shop at local markets.

Middle East

Credit cards are generally accepted throughout the Middle East, but if you plan to go to smaller towns or certain countries — like Iran — you'll want U.S. dollars or the local currency and a no-fee debit or credit card for backup. If you need to get cash out, you shouldn't have any issues finding an ATM, except in Iran, where foreign cards simply do not work.

Cash is definitely still the main payment method in most Asian countries, especially in Southeast Asia. ATMs aren't too hard to find, but that's highly dependent on what country you're in. U.S. dollars are sometimes more valuable than the local currency in countries such as Cambodia, Vietnam or Myanmar, so carry around some dollars for backup.

Regardless, remember to pack a card that doesn't charge foreign transaction fees and reimburses those pesky ATM fees. If your debit card charges foreign transaction fees, make larger withdrawals in the local currency to minimize those add-on charges. Make sure to have a secure wallet to carry all of your cash in. Cash is also important as you'll occasionally have to pay for certain visas with cash upon arrival.

You likely won't run into any issues finding an ATM in the big cities, but you may not be so lucky when on the outskirts. The U.S. dollar is highly valuable across the continent. In fact, many national parks only accept the U.S. dollar or the euro, so you should come prepared with a decent amount of U.S. cash in an assortment of bills. The local currency is preferred in smaller towns, which you can withdraw from a local ATM.

South America

Cash is king in South America and credit cards are not always accepted. Brazil is the exception here, with incredibly high rates of credit and debit card use. Elsewhere, you'll definitely be making lots of ATM trips while traveling through the continent, so be sure to alert your bank about where exactly you'll be traveling. The U.S. dollar is also commonly accepted, so it's always good to have some dollars in case. Note that all 12 countries on the continent have different currencies, so you won't want to take out too much of one currency if you plan to hop around.

U.S. dollars are the most widely accepted currency in the Caribbean, with the euro and other local currencies behind it. Similar to traveling through other regions, it's always good to carry around some cash in case, but credit cards are pretty widely accepted throughout the region. When you need to replenish your wallet, head to the ATM, as that's where you're likely to get the best exchange rate.

Note that if you're traveling to Cuba, the cash situation is much different than the other islands. U.S. dollars are not widely accepted. In fact, if you try to convert U.S. dollars to Cuban Convertible Pesos (used by foreign visitors), you'll often be charged a 10% commission by the government. Your best bet is to carry cash for daily spending, since U.S. credit and debit cards are not accepted in the country.

Other tips for saving money on currency conversion

citibank travel card atm withdrawal

Never underestimate the power of the U.S. dollar

While it's important to have local currency, you may receive a better effective exchange rate when using U.S. dollars. I'm often surprised by how much demand there is for U.S. currency in foreign countries, and I've had great success when offering to pay in dollars — especially at smaller stores and with merchants in a large bazaar.

On the other hand, hotel operators and other large companies often impose their own exchange rates, which can be very unfavorable. If you're paying in dollars or exchanging money, note that you'll often get the best rates on $100 and $50 notes, with smaller notes fetching a lower rate and old or worn bills not accepted for exchange in many places.

Be extremely careful in paying in the local currency

Dynamic Currency Conversion , or DCC, is a popular scam with merchants and credit card processors. Supposedly, this "service" offers you the opportunity to pay in your local currency, but it really just adds a huge commission. In theory, you're supposed to be asked to agree to this "service." Between language barriers and the merchant's incentive to earn a commission, many travelers get duped into these inflated charges. This happened to me when Hertz in Italy fraudulently added a 4.5% commission to my bill, but I successfully received a refund when I contacted its executive customer service.

Always contact your bank before you go

The only thing worse than paying extra fees for an ATM transaction is having your withdrawal declined. Yet this can happen if you travel overseas without notifying your bank in advance and it suspects fraud. Before you leave, call your bank and provide a list of the countries you plan on visiting, even if you just have a layover.

Bottom line

There's a time and a place to earn valuable points or miles by using a travel rewards credit card . Unfortunately, withdrawing money abroad is not one of them. By understanding the different surcharges you could face when using an ATM aboard and choosing the best debit cards to help you avoid withdrawal or foreign transaction fees at these ATMs, you can access cash in other countries at little to no cost.

20 Years Helping You Live Richer

Reviewed by Experts

Trusted by Millions of Readers

You work hard for your money. Naturally, you want to be able to access your cash when you need it — even when the banks are closed. If you bank with Citi, you probably have questions about your Citi ATM limits for your checking and savings accounts. Keep reading to learn what you need to know about withdrawing cash from a Citi ATM.

Understanding Limits on Withdrawals, Deposits and Transfers

Here’s an overview of the limits on ATM withdrawals, deposits and transfers with Citi.

ATM Withdrawal Limits

The daily ATM withdrawal limit depends on the type of Citi checking account you have. If you have the Citigold ® Account or the Citi Priority Account, you can withdraw up to $2,000 per day from a Citi ATM . If you have any other Citi account, your withdrawal limit is $1,000.

What Is the Maximum Amount of Money I Can Spend Using a Citi Debit Card?

Citi customers with the Citigold ® Account or the Citi Priority Account can spend up to $10,000 a day with a Citi debit card. If you have any other kind of Citi account, you can spend up to $5,000 per day with your Citibank debit card. That includes both in-person and online debit purchases.

What Is the Maximum Deposit Limit for Citi ATMs?

There’s no limit to the amount you can deposit in a Citi ATM . However, some Citi ATMs in non-bank locations may have limits on how many bills they can accept.

How Quickly Will My Money Be Available After I Make an ATM Deposit?

If you make a cash deposit, it is available in your account within minutes. Check deposits are subject to hold before releasing funds.

Most of the time, your check gets released on the business day following the date of your deposit. However, in cases where your full check may not be released, the first $225 becomes available one business day after you deposit the check. The remaining balance is released once the check clears.

How Can I Increase My ATM Withdrawal and Deposit Limits?

Individual accounts have limits based on tier and relationship with Citi. You can call and request a temporary lift on your account limits and it may be granted. However, Citi may require that you upgrade your account to access high limits.

Does Citi Have a Transfer Limit?

The upper limit for transfers between linked Citibank accounts can be as much as $100,000 inbound monthly or inbound daily. However, those limits may vary based on your individual type of account and where you’re transferring the money to.

As for deposit accounts, if you have a Citigold ® or a Citi Priority account, you have no daily or monthly limits on the amount you can transfer between accounts.

Transfers from Citi accounts to other banks are limited to $10,000 per day and up to $15,000 total every month.

How To Get Cash If You’ve Reached Your Limits

If you’ve already withdrawn your daily limit from the ATM and still need cash, here are a few ways you can access your money:

Request Cash Back When You Make a Debit Purchase

When you make an in-person purchase in a store using your Citi debit card, you can request cash back from the retailer. When you make your payment, a screen prompt will ask if you want cash back. Select “yes” and choose the amount you’d like, and the cashier will hand you the cash. Citibank doesn’t set limits on the amount of cash back you can receive, but many stores do place limits.

Withdraw Cash from Another Account

If you have an account separate from your primary account that has its own debit card , transfer money online. Then use the card associated with that account to access your funds.

Make a Withdrawal in Person at the Bank

When you need cash during banking hours, you can walk into any branch or stop at the drive-thru and make a withdrawal. You won’t face any limits, and you’ll be able to withdraw as much cash as you have available in your account.

Helpful Hint If you find yourself reaching Citi account limits regularly, consider upgrading your accounts. But before you do, check the fine print for additional fees and requirements.

Understanding the daily limits for Citi ATMs can help prevent a situation where you need cash but aren’t able to get it. Knowing how much cash you have available to spend can also help you manage your money wisely.

Debit Card Tips

  • Never leave your debit card or documents containing its details lying around.
  • Sign the back of your debit card with permanent ink as soon as you receive it.
  • Safeguard your card details. Do not disclose your personal identification number (PIN) for cash withdrawals to any one. Memorise your PIN.
  • When you make small value transactions without the need to sign off on the receipt, ask the merchant for a receipt of the transaction to ensure the correct amount is deducted.
  • Call Citibank immediately if your card(s) are lost or stolen.

For more information and tips on safeguarding your card(s), please click here to visit the MoneySense website.

Important Notes

In addition to ATM withdrawal functions, your Debit Card also allows you to sign for local and overseas purchases, perform contactless payment via Mastercard® Contactless (including through the use of digital wallets like Samsung Pay) and card-not-present transactions (such as mail and phone orders) (collectively ,"Debit Card Transactions") which shall be paid for by directly deducting the transaction amount from your primary bank account.

Your Debit Card therefore carries the risk of unauthorized signature-based, contactless payment or card not-present transactions. Please note that the default daily limit for these types of Debit Card Transactions is S$2,000 unless revised by you. For replacement card: if you had previously revised your old Debit Card’s daily limit, your new Debit Card daily limit remains the same as your existing daily limit of your old card or the available balance in your primary bank account, whichever is lower. For clarity, this limit is shared between the Debit Card Transactions that you are permitted to effect using your Debit Card. You may choose to increase or decrease this limit upon activation.

In addition, because the magnetic stripe of your Debit Card contains sensitive payment card data, double swiping the magnetic stripe of your Debit Card on Point-of-Sale readers or Electronic Cash Registers may expose it to skimming and/or cloning and hence theft of your sensitive payment card data. To protect your information from being skimmed and/or cloned, it is recommended that the magnetic stripe of your Citibank Debit Card is not swiped on Point-of-Sale readers or Electronic Cash Registers.

The Citibank Debit Mastercard lets you withdraw cash from ATMs and can be used to make purchases at Mastercard accepting merchant locations. What's more, you get to enjoy Citibank's signature suite of worldwide privileges whenever you use your Citibank Debit Mastercard.

Where can I use my Citibank Debit Mastercard?

With the Citibank Debit Mastercard, you get to enjoy shopping at millions of Mastercard merchants globally, simply by signing for your purchases at places like restaurants, bars, groceries and daily needs, fashion apparels, pharmacies etc.

How can I convert my Citibank ATM Card to a Citibank Debit Mastercard?

You may visit any of our Branches to apply for the Citibank Debit Mastercard. Alternatively, you may contact our 24 Hour CitiPhone Banking at 6225 5225 6225 5225 or apply online .

What is my liability if I misplace or lose my Citibank Debit Mastercard?

Your liability for all unauthorized transactions on your Citibank Debit Mastercard which are effected prior to our receipt of your notification shall be limited to S$100 provided:

  • you have immediately notified us of the loss, theft or unauthorised disclosure/use;
  • you assist us in the recovery of the unauthorised charges incurred;
  • at our request you furnish us with a statutory declaration and/or police report accompanied by written confirmation of the loss, theft or unauthorised disclosure and any other information that we may require;
  • we are satisfied that such loss, theft or unauthorised disclosure is not due to your negligence or default

What is the maximum spending limit for my debit card?

The default daily and monthly point-of-sales transaction limits for your Citibank Debit Mastercard are set out in the table below. With effect from 1 August 2019, you will be able to enjoy a higher monthly point-of-sales transaction limit for your Citibank Debit Mastercard based on your banking relationship with Citi. For any newly issued card, the daily point-of-sales transaction limit is defaulted at S$2,000. Your daily point-of-sales transaction limit remains unchanged should you have made adjustments prior to 1 August 2019.

How can I check or change my daily spending limit for my debit card?

Please contact CitiPhone at +65 6225 5225 to change your daily spending limit.

What is a debit card?

Debit cards are similar to ATM cards. You can use your debit card with your personal identification number (PIN) to withdraw cash from ATMs. You can use it to purchase goods and services. For purchases made on debit cards, the purchase amount is immediately deducted from your bank account. You can spend only the amount in your account. Make sure your card is safe at all times.

Your debit card carries the Mastercard branding which allows you to perform signature-based Point-Of-Sale (POS) transactions. While this may seem similar to credit cards, do note that when you use credit cards, you are paying on credit. But when you use a debit card, the purchase amount or withdrawal is deducted immediately and directly from your account.

Risks arising from debit card usage and safeguards

Although the Mastercard that you have received is a chip card it also has the magnetic stripe for overseas use. While chip technology can reduce the risks of cloning, the magnetic stripe portion of the debit card can still be cloned. As debit cards allow customers to sign off on the receipt, there is also a risk of forgery.

Some merchants allow you to make transactions below a certain value without the need to sign off on the transaction receipt. Do ask the merchant for a receipt of the transaction to ensure the correct amount is deducted. If the wrong payment amount is deducted, please contact Citibank immediately.

Your debit card details (such as name, account number, expiry date etc.) may be captured by fraudsters either through skimming or via intercepted online transactions. Fraudsters will then be able to use such information to clone a card or perform fraudulent card-not-present transactions (such as online or mail-order-telephone-order (MOTO) transactions).

However, for online purchases with merchants whose websites are enabled with the 3D Secure Technology, you will be asked to enter a One-Time Password before you can complete the transaction. This helps to protect you against online fraud and is a secure way to authenticate that you are making the purchase as the rightful owner of the debit card being used. Inform Citibank immediately if you have received a One-Time Password (OTP) but you did not make the transaction.

What is my liability if my debit card is lost or stolen?

If you lose your debit card, inform Citibank immediately. If your card is stolen, make a police report and inform Citibank immediately.

Once you report the loss, your maximum liability for unauthorised charges prior to reporting the loss to Citibank will be capped at $100. This cap applies provided you have not acted fraudulently, or were not grossly negligent, or did not fail to inform Citibank as soon as reasonably practicable after you became aware that the card was lost or stolen.

Tips for safeguarding your debit card

  • Safeguard your card details. Do not disclose your personal identification number (PIN) for cash withdrawals to anyone. Memorise your PIN and destroy the PIN mailer.
  • Only shop at reputable and legitimate merchants (including online stores). Do not perform online transactions using shared devices such as computers in cybercafes.
  • Check regularly that your cards are with you.
  • Call Citibank immediately if your card or card information is lost or stolen. Note the time and date when you do so.

For a comparison of ATM, Debit and Credit Cards, we urge you to visit MoneySense by clicking here .

How can I disable the Point-of-Sale payment feature (including contactless payment or card not-present transactions) on my Citibank Debit Mastercard?

You may contact our CitiPhone Banking at +65 6225 5225 between 8am to 8pm to convert your debit card to an ATM card. We will send you a new ATM card without fees and charges.

Terms & Conditions: Terms & Conditions:

Your use of the Citibank ATM and Citibank Debit Mastercard is governed by the Citibank Debit Mastercard Terms and Conditions as set out in the Citibank Singapore Global Consumer Banking Terms and Conditions. For the Citibank ATM or Citibank Debit Mastercard Terms and Conditions, please visit www.citibank.com.sg

Where we allow your Citibank Debit Card to be tagged to a Foreign Currency Account and used for any and/or all foreign currency fund in the Foreign Currency Account, foreign currency transactions and Cash Withdrawals will be directly authorized from the respective Foreign Currency Account in the foreign currency directly provided that that there are sufficient funds in the relevant foreign currency. In the event if you have performed a Cash Withdrawal and/or Card Transactions in a different currency from the Foreign Currency Account, the transaction will be subject to an administrative fee of up to 2.5% on the converted amount, or such other rate as determined and notified to you.

If you choose to make a Card Transaction payment via the Mastercard Network, you will be bound by the relevant rules governing such transactions including but not limited to rules governing chargeback and dispute resolution.

With effect from 15 November 2014, the EPINS direct debit payment service will be discontinued and you will no longer be able to make EPINS point-of-sale debit payment transactions on your Citibank ATM or ATM/Debit Card. Please note that the EPINS service is offered by Card Alliance Pte Ltd.

Please note that your privileges, rewards and/or services will differ depending on your choice of debit network.

Your Citibank Debit Card comes with a daily point of sales limit that is set at S$2,000. This limit is shared between signature-based, contactless payments (e.g. Mastercard ® Contactless and payments made using digital wallets) and card not present transactions (including mail and phone orders). You may choose to increase/decrease this limit upon activation of your Citibank Debit Card. Notwithstanding the limit that you set, the limit on your Citibank Debit Card will remain subject to your available bank balance.

Where your Citibank Debit Card has Visa or Mastercard Card Transaction functionality enabled, you acknowledge and accept that the Citibank Debit Card carries risk of unauthorized signature-based, contactless payments (e.g. Mastercard ® Contactless and other payments made using digital wallets) or card not present transactions.

Double Swiping is a term used to describe the act of a second swipe of a payment card at a Point-of-Sale terminal after the first swipe to obtain initial authorization from the bank. The second swipe effectively exposes your Citibank Debit Card’s magnetic stripe full track data to compromise. You acknowledge and accept that double swiping the magnetic stripe of your Citibank Debit Card on Point-of-Sale readers or Electronic Cash Registers increases the risk of skimming and/or cloning and hence the theft of your sensitive payment card data.

Activate the service in advance.

You are required to activate the overseas ATM withdrawal service on your ATM card and credit card(s) in advance if you wish to withdraw cash (including cash advances) from overseas ATMs 1 . citibank travel card atm withdrawal

As required by the Hong Kong Monetary Authority, the requirement will be imposed from March 1, 2013 for ATM and credit cards. The overseas ATM withdrawal service will be pre-set as "de-activated". So, if you want to withdraw cash from overseas ATMs on or after March 1, 2013, you will need to activate the overseas ATM withdrawal service by setting a desired daily overseas withdrawal limit and the active period. This is to further enhance the security for ATM services.

Citibank clients holding Citibank ATM or credit cards with the JETCO ATM logo are not required to perform the activation in order to withdraw cash from JETCO ATMs in Macau and China. However, please note that Citibank ATMs in Macau and China are not in the JETCO network, so you must activate the service if you wish to withdraw cash from these Citibank ATMs.

Starting from March 1, 2013, there are 4 channels available for you to modify the service:

  • Citibank Online - Logon and select the overseas ATM withdrawal service activation
  • Citibank ATMs and JETCO ATMs that display the JETCO chip-enabled ATM sticker
  • Citibank Automated voice recording system - Call 28600333 28600333 and follow the instructions.
  • Citibank branches.

You must set the active period (start date and end date) and indicate a desired daily withdrawal limit in HKD. The start and end dates will be of Hong Kong time. If you are traveling overseas, please be aware that the time zone may be different from that of Hong Kong's.

Please log on to Citibank Online. Then select "Overseas ATM withdrawal service activation" on the right panel and follow the instructions. You will have to set both the active period and also the daily withdrawal limit for the ATM or credit card you would like to use overseas. Once you have completed the setup, you will receive a confirmation SMS.

The withdrawal setting will be effective upon reaching your selected start date for the active period. You will receive a confirmation SMS upon successful setup of the function.

You can perform the activation through Citibank Online or by calling our CitiPhone Banking at (852) 2860 0333 (852) 2860 0333

The maximum daily withdrawal limit remains unchanged: HK$20,000 for Citibanking ® clients and Citi Priority ® clients; HK$40,000 for Citigold clients and Citigold Private Clients ® . For credit cards, the maximum withdrawal limit depends on individual credit limits or a daily withdrawal limit of HK$40,000, whichever is lower.

No. The overseas ATM withdrawal limit is not shared among different cards. However, please note that if your credit cards have a shared credit limit, the available amount for cash withdrawal is still affected by the usage of your credit cards.

No. This security measure only affects the overseas ATM withdrawal service. It does not affect other ATM service functions. You can still access your accounts and make transfers at overseas ATMs.

The activation is free of charge. For overseas ATM cash withdrawal, waiver is only limited to the handling charge incurred by Citibank (Hong Kong) Limited and/ or Citibank, N.A.. For transactions effected in currencies other than Hong Kong dollars, the amount withdrawn will be converted into Hong Kong dollars at the prevailing exchange rate plus a conversion spread as determined by the Bank on the conversion day and debited from your account together with any charges that may be imposed by the respective ATM network provider (if any).

No. The withdrawal limit applies to all the accounts linked to your card.

You and your joint account holders are holding separate ATM cards with different card numbers. So you and your joint account holders should activate the service separately. Each of you should choose your own active period and daily withdrawal limit for your own ATM cards. As your own personal settings will not be changed by your joint account holders, no notification will be sent to you if they make a change to their own settings.

The overseas ATM withdrawal service for your own ATM/ credit card must be set up by yourself. Third party authorization is not accepted.

Yes. You can set it for your credit card. Please note that if your supplementary card has the same card number as the principal card, the activation period and daily limit you set will also apply to the principal card and/or other supplementary cards with the same card number. All cards with the same number will share the same setting.

Remarks Remarks

  • If you withdraw cash from ATMs located in Mainland China and Macau, you will also need to activate the overseas ATM withdrawal service in advance. However, please note that you can withdraw cash from "JETCO" ATMs without the activation.
  • Important Notes for Credit Cardholder(s) whose Principal Card(s) and Supplementary Card(s) share the same number: For cardholder(s) whose principal and supplementary credit card numbers are currently the same, both cardholders can activate the overseas ATM withdrawal service and set the daily withdrawal limit (including cash advances) and the effective period. The latest settings will be applied to both principal card and supplementary card(s). To allow individual settings on the principal and supplementary card(s), we will replace your supplementary cards with a different card number upon your card renewal date or by the end of December 2015, whichever is earlier. All the existing settings for autopay/ standing instructions will remain unchanged. If you would like to request for an earlier card replacement, please call (852) 2860 0333 for assistance.
