Unaccompanied children will be asked for proof of age or a signed letter of permission from their parent/guardian. (sms or chat based messages are not permissible)

One infant aged 0-2 travels free when accompanied by an adult with a valid ticket. Additional infants aged 0-2 must be paid for. If you are travelling with more than 1 infant aged 0-2, please book the additional infant as 'Children (3-15).

Our passenger descriptions are designed to help you choose the right ticket for yourself or your fellow travellers.

Adult (16+) and Children (3-15)

Children under 14 cannot travel alone unless accompanied by an adult (16+). Please note, you may be required to show proof of age at any point during your journey. Failure to do so, may result in the full adult fare being charged.

Disabled Children

Should be booked as Children. If they are travelling in a wheelchair or require assistance, please call our Assisted Travel Helpline.

We strongly recommend that you bring a car seat appropriate to your child's age, but ask you to take responsibility to fit the seat.

Booster Seats

Children aged between approximately 4-11 years old, or up to 150cm tall, may use booster seats. We carry a limited number onboard most coaches.

If travelling with a child, you may be required to show proof of age when buying tickets or at any point during your journey. Failure to do so may result in the child being required to pay the full fare for the journey on that day.

Children under the age of 16 are not permitted to travel on any European service unless accompanied by an adult aged 18 or over.

Young persons aged 16 or 17 years can travel alone on European services but only if they have a letter of authority from a parent or guardian.

Senior (60 and over)

Passengers aged 60 and over are entitled to receive a small discount on European journeys. On European journeys a 50% discount is given to carers, please call us on 08717 818177 to book.

We have three different Coachcards available, each offering savings of 1/3 on all of our Standard and Fully Flexible coach fares all year round.

Prices shown include your coachcard discount, your coachcard number will be required during the booking process.

Amazing to see so many diffent natural and man made wonders. I suggest taking all additional tours. The stay before the tour in Las Vegas was at the Tropicana hotel and it was very nice. Highly recommend taking this tour and leave the details to Trafalgar. Relax and enjoy the journey.

We had a wonderful time. Don't expect five star hotels as this was, for the most part, in the accommodations in the National Parks. Richard Nieto, our driver was great! The tour was well planned out and made the maximum use of the time. Beautiful scenery. I would recommend this to anyone wishing a rustic experience.

Fascinating West, Ending in San Francisco

Spectacular Canyons and National Parks (End Denver, 13 Days)

We were given so much information ahead of time about the places we were headed. Whether it be a national park, we always had info about where bathrooms, snack bars and/or tshirts were! Stephen McNally did a wonderful job of keeping our schedule and Mark, the driver, was always kind and both were professional at all times! We've been on many cruises where you can see unique sights somewhat at a distance. This trip, in spite of living out of our suitcases, was one for the books that we will never forget! Great organization showed itself over and over during our 13 day trip!

Best of the West (12 Days)

The tour was good, the destination highlights were amazing! The hotels were good, but sometimes outside towns so there was nothing to do and not much choice for food- a bit disappointing. Breakfast not included. The guide was good, driver amazing! There was a lot of extras to choose from, so spent more than originally anticipated this will cost, especially with tips!

Post-COVID-19 family travel possibilities: How about a train trip?

If you’re turned off by the prospect of flying – the close quarters and tiny seats, the lines, the hassles – consider a train trip next time you feel like traveling. In the U.S, train travel on  Amtrak  is pleasant: Coach seats are roomy and comfortable, the wide windows let you take in the scenery, and you can get up and wander around, including to get a snack. There are no security lines, and there’s plenty of space for carry-on baggage. When it’s safe to travel again in the United States, a train trip could offer an appealing alternative to air travel. 

Train trips fit for families

The easiest scenic train routes on Amtrak are those where you hit key highlights on a single all-day journey. Among the best:

The  Adirondack  operates between New York and Montreal; it includes extensive trackage along the banks of the Hudson River and the shore of Lake Champlain. It’s good in either direction, but it's better heading southbound. If the Canadian border remains closed, you get almost the full trip New York City to/from Plattsburgh or Rouses Point, New York, which you can reach reasonably easily through Burlington, Vermont.

The  Coast Starlight  operates between Los Angeles and Seattle, but the daytime segment between Los Angeles and Emeryville, California (for San Francisco/Oakland) is a top one-day trip. It hugs the Pacific Ocean coastline between Ventura and Vandenberg Air Force Base, including stretches without highway access. For best viewing, take it northbound.

The  California Zephyr  runs between Chicago and Emeryville via Denver, Salt Lake City and Omaha, Nebraska; but the starring segment has to be the Rocky Mountains between Denver and Glenwood Springs, Colorado. Amtrak’s California Zephyr segment through the Sierras between Reno, Nevada, and Emeryville also has its partisans. Both are good for one-day viewing in either direction.

Other popular all-day Amtrak segments are the Portland-Minot (North Dakota) segment of Amtrak’s  https://www.amtrak.com/empire-builder-train which includes the Columbia River Gorge and Glacier Park; the several daily short  Pacific Surfliner  trips between Santa Barbara and San Diego for great coastline viewing; the Cardinal segment between Charleston, West Virginia, and Washington through the Appalachians, good for passengers in either direction; the  Pennsylvanian  between Pittsburgh and Philadelphia through the mountains and Horseshoe Curve, best eastbound; and the  Vermonter  segment through the Berkshires between St Albans/Burlington and Springfield, Massachusetts, best southbound. 

Comfortable train travel for families

Multi-day Amtrak trips in coach can be a drag, with the usual problems of trying to sleep sitting up and lack of shower facilities. For an extended multi-day “land cruise,” the most comfortable approach for family travel is to book a “sleeper” accommodation in a  private room .

A  Family Bedroom  accommodates two adults plus two children in lie-flat beds, and it includes access to a restroom and shower in your car.

Even better is a Bedroom Suite accommodating up to four adults in lie-flat beds and offering a private restroom and shower in your bedroom. As you might expect, you pay a stiff premium for a private room – but it’s a lot less than you pay for the several luxury excursion trains that operate in Europe and Asia.

Train tickets and discounts

Amtrak trains have fares that are capacity-controlled, which means that the earlier you book, the better deal you get. As a sample, in early December, Amtrak quotes $162 for a family of two adults and two children ages 2 to 12 from Los Angeles to Emeryville in coach in mid-February. By contrast, a Family Bedroom would cost $643.

You wouldn’t need a bedroom for this trip, but the fares show how much of a premium you pay for a room. A family bedroom for the two-night California Zephyr trip between Chicago and Emeryville would cost $1,293, compared with $423 in Coach.

Amtrak offers some useful family deals: 10% off for seniors age 65 or over, 50%  off for a child ages 2 to 12 when accompanying an adult, and “share fares” with up to 35% off for groups of three or more adults. These discounts are almost always limited to Coach travel, and you can’t combine one with another. 

Beyond the regular discounts, Amtrak has recently started running flash sales with even better deals. One such sale earlier this year applied to sleeper accommodations. If you’re interested, Amtrak ’s booking system at amtrak.com automatically quotes discounts when you check for a trip. But for the best deals, you need to keep on the lookout for flash sales.

As you might expect, Amtrak sightseeing trips work best in late spring and summer, when daylight hours are longest. But winter snowscapes can be exciting, too. 

Once you’re able to travel without limitations, you can find great scenic rail trips in other parts of the world, most notably Canada, Europe, and the South Pacific. I’ll review some of them soon.

Complete Guide To Amtrak For Families

Planning a family trip on Amtrak is easier with our complete guide to Amtrak for families . Train travel with kids can be a fun experience, but it can be challenging and confusing planning a trip for you and your children. We are here to help. Amtrak has lots to offer families traveling with children, from discounts to special offerings.

Are There Family Discounts?

Kids ages 2-12 get half off and infants travel for free. The discount can be applied to coach and sleeper car accommodations. Amtrak has lots of discounts they offer throughout the year, see their discount tab on their home page for up to date offers. Often you will find there are several discounts that can be applied to travel with children. You can have up to four occupants in a family bedroom. If you plan to have more than that you can also reserve an extra roomette.

Are There Family Bedrooms On Amtrak?

Amtrak has Family Bedrooms on their Superliner train cars. They can be found downstairs in each sleeper car. There is only one Family Bedroom per sleeper car train, so they are very limited. The family bedroom has four berths. There are two upper berths that fold down and the coach and chair on the main level fold out into beds. The family bedroom has a window on each side for watching the world go by.

There is no bathroom in the family bedroom like in the regular bedrooms. You have easy access to three bathrooms and the shower since the family bedroom is downstairs. There is also easy access to the luggage rack should you need to store items there. A sleeper car attendant is also available to assist you and your family throughout your journey.

Dining With Children On Amtrak

Parents may be concerned about feeding their kids while on Amtrak. You will find that Amtrak offers several options for children 12 and under. If you are traveling on a train with Traditional Dining you and your kids will be delighted with the restaurant like experience. The traditional menu offers several options for children as well as the option to have any adult menu item. If your train has Flexible Dining you will still have options as well.

Seating Accommodations For Families Traveling With Children On Amtrak

You’ll be surprised to know that not all trains have assigned seating in coach. Amtrak can help arrange for your family to be seated together in coach. There are a couple ways to ensure your family is seated together. First, you can call 1-800-USA-RAIL and speak to an agent for assistance. Another way is to inform the attendant when you check in at the station. You can also inform the conductor as you board the train. If you are in the sleeper cars you will automatically be in the same room.

Does Amtrak Welcome Children?

We have noticed an increase in families traveling with children on Amtrak. One thing is certain, Amtrak loves kids. You will often see staff members engaging children as well as answering their questions about train travel. If you are in Metropolitan Lounges be sure to ask for the Amtrak coloring book. At some stations they also have the paper conductor hat and paper locomotive you can build into a 3D train.

One thing we can not leave off this list is discussing why you should travel with your family by train. Amtrak has so much to offer for families traveling with children. One of the great benefits of traveling by train is enjoying the trip without concern for food or restroom stops. Children can move around the trains, use the restrooms and eat food on the train with ease. Another bonus of train travel is connectivity, many trains have Wifi available as well as access to your cell service. But you will be spending lots of time looking out the window and enjoying the ride.
