The traditional Souq Waqif is a mesmerizing place to explore. There's been a market here for centuries, though the original one was destroyed in a fire in 2003. Today, the area has been redeveloped to resemble a 19th-century market, with mud-rendered shops and beautifully restored Qatari buildings.

Going on a Doha Cruise for the First Time? Here's What You Need to Know

All the tricks and trips you should know before embarking on a Doha cruise for the first time. Read on to know more about the travel itinerary.

Book Cruises to Doha

Starting from the capital of Qatar, Doha Cruise trips have recently become a sensation among tourists. As the host country for FIFA World Cup 2022, Qatar received attention from the entire world. It has since attracted enormous tourist attention – making it a favourite location for cruise trips.

Located just beside the Persian Gulf, the city of Doha has always been an important port in the region. Last year, the country inaugurated the brand new Grand Terminal, which further magnifies its popularity as a significant port for Cruise travel.

Get the most out of the Doha cruise trip with these tips and tricks

Here is everything you need to know to make a memorable first cruise trip.

Benefits of a cruise trip from Doha

A cruise trip from Doha comes with a full package of fun and excitement. The trips offer exclusive perks to the tourists and not to mention the experience of luxury. Let the staff pamper you while you explore majestic scenic views.

Following are the exclusive experiences waiting for you onboard –

  • Exotic View: Away from the bustling cities, Doha cruise rides offer you a chance to be a peaceful observer of local culture and heritage. Right from the middle of the ocean to the heart of the city, the cruise lets you experience the authentic beauty of the sea. Especially the twinkling light of the cities during the night is a joy to behold.
  • Explore the complete Middle East: The cruise trips from Doha are usually week-long. During this period, you are exposed to the diverse culture of the entire Middle East. Sailing through the ports of Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sir Bani Yas, and other port cities offers a confluence of the ancient and modern. Except for the ultra-modern Dubai, the cruise takes you along to explore the rich cultural heritage brimming within the modern metropolis.
  • Fun for children as well: For a child, a historic monument or an exotic market holds little interest and it is justified as well. But what if they can indulge in their own activity? A cruise offers exactly the same. Our cruise lines are equipped with special entertaining activities for the entire family, both adults, and children alike. So that your fussy kids can have something to do while you can relax knowing they are safe and secure.

Activities on Doha Cruise Trip

A cruise trip basically means going overboard on indulgence and luxuries. For a period of 7-8 days, the cruise is going to be your home. The only difference is this moving home packs all the pleasures of a hotel, resort, spa, and amusement park in a ship. Look out for these activities and make the best out of your trip –

  • Amusement: Cruise companies offer so many activities that doing everything is virtually impossible. Stay calm and sign up for activities according to your time and preference. Make the most of your time. Do everything or nothing at all and just relax on your floating resort.
  • Spa: When it comes to relaxation, a spa is the best place for you to relieve some of that bottled-up stress. But other guests will be thinking the same as well so keep an eye out for it. The best trick is to pre-book your spa appointments onboard. If the particular cruise line does not offer that, make sure to make a reservation as soon as you board the vessel.
  • Dining: After all those activities and games, it is time to get a good meal for your dinner. Choose from a wide category of restaurants and cuisines offered onboard. From daily comfort food to indulgent luxury, you can find virtually everything on a modern cruise. Opt for Chef's specialty or stick to more familiar alternatives. Most often, Doha cruise ships are equipped to offer you your own personalised dish. Check with your cruise line to know the kinds of flexibility they offer.

Shore excursions

Apart from all the facilities you can get on a cruise line, you also can avail yourself of ground excursion tours in the landing ports. Doha is by far the most happening landing port with so many activities to experience. The Doha port is now turned into a dedicated Cruise port with various nearby tourist attractions. Following are some popular tourist destinations near Doha port –

  • Museum of Islamic Art: The museum is famous for preserving some pre-Islamic manuscripts of the Persian Empire. The architecture of the museum itself is a wonderful example of the avant-garde. The museum is designed by architect I.M. Pei who is known for designing the glass pyramid outside the Louvre Museum, in France.
  • Souq Waqif: Souq Waqif is known for its mediaeval architecture. The site has everything it takes to spend an entire day. From exotic spice markets to indigenous jewellery shops, it is a shopper's paradise. After a tiring day of exploring the rich, vibrant artworks of Souq Waqif, recover your energy with delectable Persian cuisine. Pay a visit to Parisa and tantalise your taste buds before you can resume your Doha cruise trip.
  • National Museum of Qatar: If you have an interest in learning about Qatar's rich heritage, the National Museum is your place. With its 11 galleries, this museum takes you through the exotic history of the country leading to the present day as well as to the future of this country. In presenting its story, the museum uses both audio and visual mediums. In a first of its kind, it also uses aromas to enrich the storytelling experience.

Things to remember

So, all things figured out, it’s finally time to go for your Doha Cruise trip. But wait, there are certain things you need to remember to have a great experience in the foreign country as well as onboard the cruise line.

  • Book F&B packages: It is always a good idea to book package deals in advance. Rather than opting for one or two services, go for a package to get extra benefits. Booking packages in advance will save you money and time. Many of the cruise lines have special offers which may include promotions on beverage packages and specialty dining. Others offer a discount if these packages are booked any time prior to sailing.
  • Respect the local culture: Amid all its modernity, Qatar preserves its centuries-old traditional culture. So, as the saying goes, when in Rome dress like Romans! Maintain respectful behaviour with locals and follow guidelines from authorities when in a port. Drinking in public places is considered a serious offence in Qatar. So does a public display of affection. Keep your drinks and affections reserved for designated spaces and you will be just fine.
  • Declare your preferences: Since the staff at the cruise line will be responsible for your nutrition for the next few days, it is a good idea to let them know about your likes and dislikes regarding food. If you may have any allergies or strict aversion to a dish, embarkation is the appropriate time for you to discuss it with the staff.

Tick off your checklist

This is the final step before you embark on your exotic Doha cruise journey. Keep a track of the following information to have a safe and comfortable trip –

  • Passport and visa: It is almost a no-brainer but ensure that your passport and visa are in order before the journey. Keep a note of the tenure of the Visa and plan your trips accordingly.
  • Pack light: Packing too much is a serious issue when it comes to cruise travel. Keep in mind the climate you will be travelling in. Based on that light linen and cotton are what you should go for. It will help you through the heat.
  • Sunscreen: With all its splendour, you must remember that Qatar is located in the middle of a desert. Consider the heat a given aspect of your vacation and please carry good sunscreen to prevent any nasty sunburn.
  • Embassy contact details: When going out to foreign lands, you should always stay in touch with your embassy. Especially before venturing out into international waters inform the local embassy about your tour plans and give them your itinerary.
  • Deal with your mobile: Soon as you venture out into the ocean, your telecom service provider is unlikely to cover you. Plan ahead of your trip and determine if you want to get a roaming pack. Most cruise lines these days offer onboard Wi-Fi service, so check with your cruise line beforehand.

So, you are all prepared for your first cruise experience. There are ample reasons to be thrilled about it. After all, a Doha cruise trip offers you an affordable and easily accessible opportunity to explore the Middle East in all its grandeur. In all excitement, make sure to pack all necessary documents and ensure to make an itinerary so you don’t roam off your schedule.

Happy travels!

Doha Qatar cruise port

Region Asia

Local Time 2024-04-27 09:01

Port Doha Qatar cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month. The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from Doha Qatar. To see the full itineraries (ports of call dates and arrival / departure times) and their lowest rates – just follow the corresponding ship-link.

Doha is Qatar's largest/principal port and capital city, with population around 2,4 million and total area approx 132 km2 (51 mi2). Port Doha (locode QADOH) is on the Persian/Arabian Gulf. Over half of Qatar's population lives in Doha City or its suburbs. The city is also Qatar's commercial capital and one of the Middle East's financial centers. There is a same-named seaport (Doha Port/Mina Doha) in Kuwait's Al Kuwayt Governorate.

The coastal territory (Trucial Coast) was ruled by Britain as part of the empire's strategy to secure safe passage through the Arabian Gulf for the merchant ships of the East India Company (1600-1874). The agreement with the local sheiks (signed in 1820) acknowledged British authority in the Gulf and practically ended the piracy and the slave trade.

The town of Doha was established in the early-19th-century as an extension of Al Bidda (British Qatar's largest city). The country was a British protectorate between 1916-71. Doha became the country's capital in 1971 when Qatar declared independence from the UK.

The city was selected as a host of renowned sporting events, such as "2006 Asian Games", "2011 Pan Arab Games", and most of the games at "2011 AFC Asian Cup". The 20th "World Petroleum Conference" was held here in December 2011. Doha also hosted "2012 UNFCCC Climate Negotiations" and "2022 FIFA World Cup".

In May 2015, the city was officially recognized as one of the "New 7 Wonders Cities" - along with Beirut (Lebanon) , Durban (South Africa) , Havana (Cuba) , Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) , La Paz (Mexico) and Vigan (Philippines).

Doha City houses the headquarters of numerous domestic and international corporations and organizations, including Qatar's largest oil and gas companies RasGas, Qatargas, and Qatar Petroleum. The city's economy is built primarily on the natural gas and oil industries.

Qatar's cruising season is during winter (October through April). The seaport is managed by Qatar Tourism Authority (QTA).

During season 2017-2018, TUI Cruises (German shipping company) visited Doha 7x times, bringing ~17,500 tourists to Qatar. The same season was a record-breaker (~65,000 tourists, or 39% increase over 2016). Port Doha was visited by a total of 22 vessels plus 1 superyacht. The Port received 5x maiden calls ( MSC Splendida , Mein Schiff 5 , Crystal Serenity , Crystal Symphony , Europa 2 ). Data showed 86% disembarking passengers, of whom 53% booked city tours and 18% booked desert safaris.

The main factor for the Port's cruising business growth was the 2016-introduced free 96-hours transit visa for international tourists. Seaport's largest visiting liners so far are MSC Splendida ( MSC ) and Mein Schiff 5 ( TUI ). In 2017, Splendida (max capacity 3900 passengers) replaced  MSC Fantasia .

For season 2018-2019 were booked 43 ships (of which 10 with maiden port calls) and were expected 140,000+ tourists (passengers and crew). The season had 5x 2-ship days. During season 2019-2020, the cruise port expected nearly 200,000 visitors, targeting an annual volume of ~0,5 million passengers by the year 2026.

For season 2019-2020 the cruise port had scheduled a total of 74 ship calls, with estimated 186,000+ passengers plus 61,000+ crew. During the season here was homeported Costa Diadema , with booked 16 berthings (planned roundtrips).

Doha plans a port redevelopment project budgeted ~QR 2 billion (Qatari Riyals, ~USD 550 million).

In 2021-Q1, the French luxury travel brand Ponant  chartered the ship Le Champlain to Qatar Airways Holidays. The airline (via partnership with Discover Qatar) launched the "Luxury Coastal Cruise of Qatar" program custom-made for citizens and residents of the country. The exclusive program was based on a 3-night Persian Gulf itinerary (leaving roundtrip from Doha). The coastal sightseeing and exploration activities included snorkeling (at Al Ashat Island), gliding (over Khor Al-Udaid channel), scenic cruising for marine and wildlife viewings (hammerhead sharks, whale sharks, dolphins, dugongs, flamingos). The shipboard and ashore enrichment programs were led by expert tour guides - marine biologists, naturalists, ornithologists. Le Champlain's Qatar cruise season (late-March - April 2021) included 6 consecutive departures out of Doha, with all-inclusive prices starting from QR 4990 (USD 1370 / EUR 1140) per person with double occupancy.

For season 2021-2022, the Port had booked a total of 30 ship calls, of which 4 were maiden port calls and 4 by luxury ships. The Qatar Tourism Authority also developed special onboard flight programs for foreign cruisers that stay overnight in Doha for their departure and return flights, as such tourists start and end their flights from/in Qatar.

For season 2023-2024, Port Doha had booked 120 cruise ship berthings, with expected ~200,000 tourists.

Doha Qatar cruise terminal

Before the inauguration of Qatar’s new cruise port Doha, large-sized cruise ships docked at the Hamad Port (cargo port). Doha Port is located off Doha Corniche - several kilometers long waterfront promenade along Doha Bay. Before the port redevelopment, the largest cruise liners able to dock at Doha Port were with LOA length under 250 m (820 ft).

Due to the increasing number of cruiseship tourists, Qatar's Tourism Authority, Ports Management Company and Ministry of Interior took measures to facilitate the passengers' disembarkation process and entry procedures.

Following an investment in new security technologies and close collaboration with cruise ship operators, passenger processing / disembarkation time was reduced to just several minutes.

As part of the new process, cruise ship tourist (passenger and crew) passport details are shared with Qatar's immigration office 48 hours before the ship's arrival in the country. This allows cruise tourists to be cleared for entry before the ship docks in port.

Due to the short port stay duration (~8 hours), passengers and crew are eligible for transit visas (free 96-hour visas), which further eases the entry process. In 2017, Port Doha was visited by its largest cruise vessel so far -  MSC Splendida . The ship docked in Doha on December 20, bringing over 3900 passengers and 1400 crew.

Port Doha's new Grand Cruise Terminal was slated for opening/inauguration for FIFA World Cup 2022 (Nov 20 thru Dec 18). The new  facility has a large terminal building (sized 24000 m2 / 258334 ft2, divided into 2x terminals) and docking capacity to handle/berth 2x mega-ships (max 12000 cruisers/passengers + crew) simultaneously on a single wharf. The Grand Terminal buildings have departure and arrival halls, cafe, duty-free shop, parking areas (separate stands for taxis and buses), as well as a huge aquarium (interconnecting both terminals) and an art gallery. A large terrace (on floor 2) stretches across both buildings.

The Top 10 Dhow Cruises in Doha: A Magical Blend of Tradition and Luxury

Nestled on the northeastern coast of the Arabian Peninsula, Qatar boasts a rich maritime heritage deeply intertwined with the iconic dhow boats.

For centuries, these traditional wooden vessels have been the lifeline of Qatar’s economy, serving as the backbone of its trade, fishing, and pearl diving industries.

Today, while modernization and progress have reshaped Qatar’s landscape, the allure of these historic boats still captures the hearts of locals and visitors alike.

Understanding the Rich History of Dhows in Qatar

The history of dhows in Qatar traces back to ancient times when Bedouin tribesmen first crafted these sturdy wooden boats to navigate the Persian Gulf’s azure waters.

With their majestic lateen sails billowing in the wind, dhows traversed the seas to connect the Arabian Peninsula with far-flung lands, trading in pearls, spices, textiles, and other precious commodities.

As the country’s fortunes flourished, so did the significance of dhows, turning them into cultural symbols of Qatari identity.

Dhow construction became an art form passed down through generations, with master shipbuilders meticulously crafting these vessels using traditional techniques and locally sourced timber.

The craft’s intricate design and impeccable functionality were honed over centuries, ensuring that each dhow was perfectly suited to withstand the harsh marine conditions and sail the vast Arabian waters.

I've chosen this flight because my other options were choosing another date or choosing a flight with 19 hours stop that seems too much long and boring. Should I change my flight ? Is it worth for me to purchase front seat so that I can minimize the wasted time while taking of the plane ? Any suggestion will be appreciated.
