Road Encounters Levels 1-4

Roads and trails encounters.

Roads and trails connect the cities and ports of fantasy nations. A few newly built but many fallen into ruin upon the causeways of older empires. A highway connecting two prominent cities, an ancient trail through sylvan woods or a road built by dwarves and now used by local tribes. Encounters happen at haunted crossroads and narrow paths, with desperate brigands, friendly pilgrims, hungry mercenaries, locals herding goats and any others on the path.

There is a 5e road random encounter generator at ChaosGen. And also a pdf of these and more tables at the DM's Guild as Road Encounters .

100 Dungeons and Dragons Roadside Encounters

Travel in d&d or pathfinder doesn't need to be boring..

' data-src=

Travel time in Dungeons and Dragons can be boring. But it doesn’t have to be. Lord of the Rings taught us that the adventure is in the journey. Here are 100 Dungeons and Dragons roadside encounters to make that trip to the next town a little more enjoyable.

You’ll note that few of these lead immediately to “roll initiative.” Instead, these are meant to add intrigue, introduce an important NPC, or perhaps serve as a red herring. And, you know, some will lead to the words “roll initiative,” so that’s nice.

You can read through them to work as inspiration for encounters you want to spring at your players, our you can roll 2d10 and take your campaign off the rails by letting chance dictate. Regardless, enjoy.

1. A huge nest has fallen from a tree on the side of the road. The strange-looking eggs within seem on the verge of hatching.

2. A dwarf falls from the sky onto the road with a splat. (Did a creature drop it, was he launched into the air, did he fall from a floating fortress?)

3. A row of severed heads on spikes and a warning sign claiming, “Dis Rode Belong Negan”

4. A very small goblin wearing an old carpet as a cape leaps into the path and demands tribute.

5. A crazed halfling, starved out of his mind, jumps to the backs of the PCs and rips their packs apart with his teeth in search of food.

6. A bounty hunter tracks his target.

7. A lush garden is filled with ripe vegetables. It is protected by a magical ward, but what is triggered when entering the garden?

8. A monstrous mount is ridden by a gnome. Friend or foe?

9. Two guards hold a wanted poster. They carefully studies the party as they pass by.

10. A smiling roadside merchant roasts rats, frogs, and squirrels on sticks. He offers a bite to the PCs.

11. A chatty bard walks alongside the party. Time for an exposition dump!

12. A bridle ties a well-groomed speckled horse to a nearby tree. The horse is fitted with an elegant but empty saddle. Who does it belong to? Do the PCs take it?

13. A powerful storm forced you to take the only available refuge: an elderly couple’s home just off the side of the road. The two room home holds numerous open cups of the same pungent liquid.

14. A naked bard asks for a lift to the nearest inn where he left his clothes and money.

15. Alongside the road, a charlatan asks the party if they want to see a performance of his trained pets. The slightest affirmative answer causes Steve to give a whistle, and a huge swarm of ravenous locusts suddenly manifests.

16. A fat friar hurries past the PCs mumbling, “It isn’t fair.”

17. An evil wizard is tied to a stake, the body still smoking.

18. Three young men work on tipping over an occupied outhouse.

19. A band of orcs runs toward the party. They look over their shoulders and try to run through the party. Something dreadful has terrified them, and the party is heading in its direction!

20. Traveling off the main road, the PCs feel like they are being followed. Who is hunting them?

21. Three types of meat hang on a spit over a campfire. It is clear that it is three types of humanoids that hang over the flames.

22. A snowy road hides a sinkhole that chutes the party on a slalom slide down the mountainside.

23. A well-spoken bugbear wearing fine studded leather armor is trapped under a fallen tree. He begs the party to come to his aid.

24. A ranger stops by the group’s camp one night and gives them advice on the trail ahead, including places to camp and a tavern where they can get good rates if they mention his name. All his advice is impeccable, but when they mention his name at the tavern, they’re told he died years ago on that very road.

25. A shopping list for potions lies on the ground.

26. The local baron has enacted a toll bridge. Several peasants were unaware, and cannot afford the toll. They beg the PCs for change.

27. You find the remains of a pouch that contains coins fro ma land you do not recognize.

28. The party hears a long stream of curses further up the road. Then they spot a head in the road. A person is still alive, buried up to his neck!

29. An arrow hits a nearby trunk, a message wrapped around the shaft.

30. A bridge is missing. Where it used to be is now a ferry service, for a sizable fee. The ferry looks like it might consist of bridge parts, and only takes a few travelers at a time.

31. A loaded wagon travels down the road toward the party, but it has no apparent means of propulsion.

32. As bandits attack, the PCs realize a friend of theirs is among the robbers.

33. There is a mysterious flicker ahead, and one member of your party suddenly stops, paralyzed.

34. Orcs gather twigs and berries along the road and it’s clear they have non-hostile purpose. Will the PCs attack just because they are orcs?

35. A tree falls onto the road. Then a fireball blows up the tree. It appears the PCs are in the middle of a skirmish between druids and fire wizards.

36. Flowers by the roadside turn their heads to follow the party, and they’re getting larger.

37. An overturned beer cart lies in the road. Nearby, an enormous troll snores loudly, surrounded by empty kegs.

38. A set of shackles lies at the side of the road.

39. A village can be seen to the west. It isn’t on any of the maps.

40. Three pilgrims trudge along the dusty road, an old man and two young men. Simple travelers? Or are they more than they seem?

41. You stumble upon an old scroll case wedged between a tangle of tree branches. Inside is a village’s charter of rights and freedoms.

42. A dead magic user clutches a scroll in his stiff hand. The scroll says something important.

43. A single giant footprint lies along the path. There are no other signs of such footprints in the area.

44. You party awakens to find all your gear has been stolen during the night. A quick search reveals twelve sets of tracks and, lying in the middle of your campsite, a smoldering pouch of herbs that, when you sniff them, make you feel slightly drowsy.

45. An enormous dragon lands on the road in front of the group. It asks for directions to a certain village, gives the party a generous tip, and then flies off saying he intends to raze it to the ground.

46. An exotic, almost alien weapon or tool lies on the side of the road.

47. The PCs mysteriously repeat a piece of road they already passed, though the route has been perfectly straight to this point. The road even includes their footprints.

48. A dozen townsfolk are running after a fleeing woman and attempting to stone her to death for being a prostitute.

49. Two other adventuring groups are arguing in the middle of the road.

50. You see a man-sized shadow from the left side of the road waving its arms at you. “Over here, quickly, I’ve caught one!”

51. A person fleeing arranged marriage seeks refuge with the PCs.

52. Picked mushrooms lay on stump to dry.

53. A strange old man offers the PCs a scroll in a language they cannot read.

54. Gnomes are holding a yard sale! They have any number of strange and fascinating contraptions.

55. Someone has scattered caltrops across the road.

56. You encounter a monk, a monkey, a turtle and a pig, all heading west.

57. A weathered sign points off the road, yet with no apparent trail to follow.

58. The next 100 feet of road are covered with newly grown grass.

59. Ladies clothing and under clothing are strewn in the bushes along the road. How did these get here?

60. A formerly brilliant wizard, now pesters the party with the incoherent rants of a man driven mad by a botched invisibility spell.

61. A drunken dwarf staggers along, challenging everyone to a wrestling match.

62. A goblin, on fire, runs shrieking past the party.

63. A rock with an odd, glowing rune sits by the road ahead.

64. A noble, disguised as a filthy beggar, tests the party’s compassion and generosity. If they pass whatever standard he sets, then he becomes a source of various quests that require personal sacrifice to accomplish.

65. A circus is set up alongside the road. A barker on the roadside cajoles you to “come inside and see what wonders it holds.”

66. The road crests a hill, and spread out before the group is a stunning, sweeping vista of the land beyond. A painter sits nearby, capturing the scene, and asks the group to pose for his foreground.

67. An overturned rowboat sits on the side of the road. There is no river or stream nearby. Under the rowboat is an entrance to a lair.

68. A wandering cleric begs the heroes to recover a relic for them.

69. A road sign saying where you came from is ahead of you.

70. A group of guardsmen hang wanted posters on trees. One face looks familiar to a PC.

71. A carriage is stuck high up in a tree.

72. In the morning while breaking camp, the PCs spot a bush that wasn’t there before.

73. A beautiful woman, adorned in the robes of an enchantress, emerges from hiding near the road and implores you to lend her aid.

74. The road is lined with snakes sleeping in the sun.

75. A necromancer uses his talents to animate animal and human corpses and forces them to perform in a roadside circus. The townsfolk from a nearby village seem to enjoy the show a bit too much.

76. A chain gang digs ditches beside the road.

77. A traveling minstrel challenges the wisest looking member of the party to a storytelling contest.

78. A wizened tinker sells charms from his cart: dried frogs, finger bones, cat skulls, and the like. Leaving him, you turn to find he is eerily out of sight altogether.

79. A paladin of a holy church and his retinue have ridden out on a holy crusade against evil and demand others who serve the cause of good to join their cause on the spot.

80. The road starts to get muddy. Soon the mud is two feet deep. Water in the ditches alongside starts to bubble.

81. A majestic elk sprints past with something golden caught in its antlers.

82. A stranger on the road tells each PC to repent of their sins. He knows details.

83. A door stands beside the road, but there is no sign of the rest of the house.

84. A wine merchant’s wagon has shattered a wheel and he offers passers-by cut rate prices on his wares as it is getting repaired.

85. An ugly old woman struggles to bring her wash basket of wet clothes up from the creek to the road. She stumbles and drops the laundry back down the slope.

86. A monk, collapsed and bleeding on the roadside, pushes an unremarkable ring into a PC’s hands and desperately whispers, “You must…” before exhaling his last breath.

87. A lost gnome asks for directions.

88. A dead raven lies on the road, pierced by a bright blue fletched arrow.

89. A table on the roadside holds a large basket of fresh vegetables. A sign reads “1 copper a bunch: honesty is a virtue!”

90. You find a small leather bag. It smells of moisture, and contains a set of keys and a vellum map to the location of a small keep.

91. The road is littered with bear traps.

92. A thick fog has settled on the bridge ahead.

93. The group arrives late at night at a tiny village straddling the road. They secure accommodation and food from the friendly locals and fall asleep. In the morning the village is empty and ruined, as if abandoned years ago.

94. As the road passes through a hilly region, you spy a cave, from which can be heard the voice of a singing female.

95. As you turn the corner, a dwarf and elf are standing over a stack of goblin corpses. They argue over the kill count.

96. The party notices a sudden and drastic change in temperature, then just like that, things are back to normal.

97. A little girl is watching you from just off the road. The next time you glance over, you see a wolf run away.

98. An ecstatic farmer presses a cigar into your hands and proclaims, “It’s a girl!”

99. Scratched into the dust of the road are the words, “Good luck tomorrow. You’re going to need it.”

100. The entire party suddenly loses their bearings and realize that they’ve walked the same mile three times. Are they road weary or are they caught in something manipulating them.

Swimming across a rushing river, sneaking down a dungeon corridor, scaling a treacherous mountain slope—all sorts of movement play a key role in fantasy gaming adventures. The GM can summarize the adventurers’ movement without calculating exact distances or travel times: “You travel through the forest and find the dungeon entrance late in the evening of the third day.” Even in a dungeon, particularly a large dungeon or a cave network, the GM can summarize movement between encounters: “After killing the guardian at the entrance to the ancient dwarven stronghold, you consult your map, which leads you through miles of echoing corridors to a chasm bridged by a narrow stone arch.” Sometimes it’s important, though, to know how long it takes to get from one spot to another, whether the answer is in days, hours, or minutes. The rules for determining travel time depend on two factors: the speed and travel pace of the creatures moving and the terrain they’re moving over.

Travel Pace

Difficult terrain, special types of movement, climbing, swimming, and crawling.

Dungeons & Dragons: How To Handle Travel And Rests

Everyone knows that adventuring involves a lot of travel. And travel involves a lot of rest. Even in Dungeons & Dragons.

  • Spice up in-game travel with descriptive language, checks, weather, and terrain puzzles to keep players engaged.
  • Break up the monotony of travel with NPC encounters and dynamic weather conditions to add intrigue.
  • Enhance rest periods with items, skill learning opportunities, and random tables to make downtime more interesting.

Even in Dungeons & Dragons , adventuring involves a lot of travel. Unless the party finds some sending stones or other means of fast travel, they’re going to be walking or riding somewhere far away, eventually. Travel is an unavoidable part of the journey — even in a fantasy world, folks have got to walk places. Travel is just a fantasy reality, but it doesn’t have to be boring, slow, or un-fun. There are many ways to make travel interesting, exciting, and even engaging.

Another reality of travel is that lots of time on the move means lots of time on the mend. Rest is another unavoidable component of D&D , and it’s a necessity of travel. But rest in D&D is actually a rich chance to do lots of interesting things besides just sleep. Learning how to augment and enhance travel and rest can keep gameplay exciting no matter how sleepy the PC party is.

Start With Detailed Narration To Engage The Players

Spice up in-game travel with:.

  • Descriptive, beautiful language
  • Interesting sights and sounds in the distance
  • Perception, Survival, Investigation, and Nature checks
  • Dynamic weather patterns
  • Dynamic terrain puzzles
  • Random Tables

15 Fey Type Monsters To Add Whimsy To Any D&D Campaign

For a lot of gaming groups, travel between key locations can be an unwanted or even boring experience. The party has to take time walking through a purposefully uninteresting patch of the map to get to the next narratively significant location. Travel that feels empty can be fatal for fun, and this mechanic simply doesn’t have to be this way. It can be every bit as engaging and involved as every other aspect of gameplay. It might not pack all the punch of combat, or all the intrigue of hunting after a mystery, but it can certainly be fun in its own right.

Creatively handling travel only involves a few fair twists put in place by the DM . Engaging travel has to involve more than just descriptions of the party traveling. However, DMs shouldn't underestimate the power of good, descriptive narration, as this is unarguably an important part of travel. The DM will need to describe the scenery, terrain, weather, and interesting locales that the PC party passes on their travels. This is a big first step in making travel more than just downtime between key locations. The players should be called on every now and then to make Perception or Nature rolls and rewarded with something unique or exceptionally descriptive for their troubles.

The Dynamic Duo Of Travel: Weather & Terrain

17 best d&d adventures you can finish in one night.

There are a few more relatively easy ways to go beyond just pretty, descriptive narration, however. Poetry in motion only goes so far in keeping everyone at the table engaged, but it shouldn’t be left out. Something as simple as adding dynamic weather patterns to the game where appropriate can bring travel and downtime to life. Have the weather and climate be alive in-game. Is the local tavern on fire? What if it’s located in a rainy part of the region, or it’s the winter rainy season? Does the PC party all like to wear heavy cloaks to disguise themselves? Maybe they’re walking through an exceptionally hot and dry part of the map. Now they need to change gear or rest more often to survive.

Dynamic weather conditions can add lively little quirks to gameplay not just while traveling, but at any time. It’s not always clear skies and sunshine, even amid an adventure! It’s easy to go one step beyond dynamic weather and make the terrain dynamic, too. For example, the DM can create a non-combat encounter that puts players at odds with the terrain. Suddenly the PC party is face-to-face with a sheer, sharp cliff face. Now they have to climb without taking damage from rocks or falling. This will require Strength, and Athleticism rolls to successfully scale the cliff face. Maybe they stumble across an unexpected swampy marshland. The PCs will need to roll Dexterity and Acrobatics checks to navigate through the murky bog.

Encounters With NPCs Break Up The Monotony Of Travel

7 easiest (& 7 hardest) premade d&d campaigns for new dms.

By just making the weather and the terrain alive, the DM has added opportunities for dice rolling and keeping the party engaged while traveling. But it doesn’t stop there. The DM looking to make long travel times truly exciting can add Travel Encounters. Determine how long the party may be traveling. For every 2 to 4 hours of travel add a Travel Encounter. Perhaps the party meets a wandering merchant, or a young couple in distress, or maybe a pack of wolves or bandits.

Travel Encounters are easy enough to add to the game. Simply generate a Random Travel Encounter Table. Create 20 encounter scenarios that fit the area of the map the PCs will be traveling across. It won’t necessarily make things more fun to have Lava Monsters attack the party in the middle of a frozen lake. But, hey, a frozen lake is a good opportunity for a terrain puzzle or a yeti attack! Once the list of 20 appropriate Travel Encounters is generated, simply roll on that table at designated intervals of in-game travel time.

While that’s being done, go ahead and randomize weather and terrain puzzles, too. Pay close attention to the areas of the map the PCs will be traveling to and make a Random Weather Table and a Random Terrain Table. With just three simple tables, travel is now an exciting mystery even for the DM! This will keep a journey of any size engaging in any scenario.

Getting Some Much-Needed Shut-Eye: The Two Types Of Rest

Add interest & engagement to rest periods & breaks by:.

  • Equip the PC Party with interesting items like medicine kits or healing potions to improve their HP
  • Equip the party with food, drink, and books that can be used to acquire stat boosts
  • Equip the PC party with magic items to learn about or attune to
  • Generate Random Tables to enhance Rest periods like Random Encounters, Random Rest Occurrences, Random Rest Sightings

D&D: 10 Essential Rules New Players Need To Know

As if rest wasn’t unappealing enough to some players, there are two different types of rest. However, don’t let this be discouraging or strike fear of boredom, as rest is a fun mechanic that can add a lot to the game. It isn’t a boring necessity that needs to happen between sessions. Rest is an opportunity for a lot of fun things that don’t otherwise make it into the game.

The two types of rest are a long rest and a short rest. A short rest is a basic break. It’s glorified lunchtime, a minimum of 1 hour long and roughly up to four hours. Players are allowed to do nothing more involved than tending wounds, reading, eating, drinking, meditating, or the like. During this short rest players have the option to perform a limited amount of healing by rolling hit die.

Long rests are a bit more complicated. They must be a minimum of 8 hours long, and players can sleep for at least 6 hours, and do no more than 2 hours of light activity. Light activity includes what is mentioned in a short rest, plus standing watch or something equal in involvement. If a long rest gets interrupted for any reason by more involved activities like fighting or walking, the clock has to start all over again. At the end of a good long rest the PCs regain all their lost hit points and up to half of their hit die . A PC must also be conscious to benefit from rest, i.e. has at least 1 hit point, and can’t long rest more than once every twenty-four game hours. Players and DMs can learn more about resting on page 186 of the Player's Handbook , and there are further rest variants for the DM to play around with on page 267 of the Dungeon Master's Guide.

What Can Players Do On A Rest?

There’s much more to do during a rest than just sit around or sleep. There’s eating, drinking, talking, meditating, studying, attuning, reading, strategizing, and the list goes on. Players can do anything on a rest, long or short, that isn’t too strenuous or involved. This gives the players and the DM plenty of time to get creative. Handling rest as the DM leaves room for way more than just describing the scene where the PC party decides to stop and take a break.

One productive activity during rest is for players to identify or attune any loot they may have picked up along the way. These activities will naturally take some time, and the DM can also inject a bit of intrigue by tying plot threads to a mysterious magical item that the party acquired on their adventures. Rests are usually the downtime players take to investigate such items, so this is a natural point for the DM to give the players any hidden details for the loot they may have prepared ahead of time.

There are ways to get even more creative, however. Long rests, especially if there is frequent need or usage of them, can be a great opportunity to augment gameplay by taking the downtime to learn new skills or languages. Perhaps the PC Bard wants to learn how to use thieves’ tools. All they have to do is buy a set and study and practice with them during the long rests for an amount of time the DM deems acceptable. Now the PC Bard can use thieves’ tools in addition to their many instruments and other skills, just as one example.

This same mechanic can be used with books of mysterious or educational origin. Say a PC has a low History proficiency , but they pick up a History book and study and read it every long rest. After a few rest periods of study, the DM could now give them a +2 to all History checks because they read the book. The same can be done with any language a PC may want to learn — all the player would need to do is acquire the appropriate book and study it for the requisite amount of time. Then, bingo, the PC has learned a new language. These are seemingly simple or mundane details, but utilizing them can have a major impact on gameplay. The possibilities are endless.

Once again, rest is a fun and fine time to make use of random tables, which the DM can populate with random encounters, random rest occurrences, and random rest sightings. Whatever kind of experience the DM wants to add to rest periods, they can generate a random table that will suit them. Rest is also the place to satisfy any hunger, thirst, or survival mechanics that may have been added to the game. Long rests can also easily be turned into level-up sessions if it’s too difficult for the PCs to do between sessions.

While travel and rest may seem like parts of Dungeons & Dragons to brush over, they are downright rich with opportunities for fun, engagement, and game enhancement . So much can be done during travel or rest periods to keep players involved, keep the game alive, and change the way the game is played. Don’t neglect the power of a nice walk or a long nap, even in D&D !

Geography [ edit ]

Khabarovsk Krai occupies a long swathe of Russia's Pacific coastline, a full 2000 kilometers of it, going as far south as Sakhalin and north to Magadan Oblast . At nearly 800.000 km², it's Russias fourth largest province. In the north, taiga and tundra prevail, deciduous forests in the south, and swampy forests in the central areas around Nikolaevsk-on-Amur . As a testament to its size there are more than 50 thousand lakes to fish in, more rivers and streams than you would care to count, and several mountain ranges intersect the region, including the northern reaches of the Sikhote-Alin mountains shared with Primorsky krai. The highest point is Mount Bery, towering nearly in fact, three quarters of the area is occupied by mountains and plateaus.

Biodiversity [ edit ]

The diversity of purely North animals like brown bear and sheer South representatives like Eastern softshell spiny turtle (Trionix) is backed by the legend that God would mix the rest of seeds and animals when somebody told him about missing spot on Earth.

One can encounter pine-tree and wild Far-Eastern grape which came definitely from the South. Its blue round berries with sour taste are cultivated in gardens to produce home wine.

Like Trionix many species are listed in the Red Book.

Culture [ edit ]

Japanese director Akira Kurosawa's 1975 film Dersu Uzala, based on a book by Russian explorer Vladimir Arsenyev, describes the friendship of a Russian explorer and his Nanai guide named Dersu Uzala. (Wikipedia)

Aboriginal culture within small enclaves across the krai are Nanai, Ulchi, Manchur, Orochi, Udege, Negidal, Nivkhi, Evenki and varies in each settlement.

Get in [ edit ]

Khabarovsk is a major transportation hub for the entire Russian Far East and will likely be any visitor's first stop by either the Trans-Siberian Railway or via Khabarovsk's international airport ( KHV  IATA ).

From China there are two entrance routes: one begins on the border with the Heihe - Blagoveshchensk crossing point, the other from Fuyuan town on Amur river. Another possible way is one from Sakhalin, where international ferry operates between Russian Korsakov and Japan's Wakkanai . A one-night bus trip along the federal highway Vladivostok-Khabarovsk is an option for a traveller, if the train carriage by some odd reason is not preferable.

Do [ edit ]

Fishing and hunting in the wild are the major attractions for local villagers, town and city dwellers as well as trekking routes to taiga plains and mountains untouched by humans are favourite activities for all sorts of tourists. Khabarovsk and Komsomolsk mountain bike clubs are all at it. Taiga forest roads are always abuzz with mosquitos in summer and the best seasons for visiting are May and September when the air is not so stifling and the sun is just warm. Winter attracts regional skiers and snowboarders to the ski bases "Holdomi" and "Amut Snow Lake" near Komsomolsk and "Spartak" slopes near Khabarovsk.

Eat [ edit ]

Local food follows traditional Russian cuisine featured with salted bracken, mushrooms, Korean and Chinese and even European dishes served in theme restaurants of two big cities. Don't forget to taste pancakes with a spoonful of linden, wildflower, buckweat honey or a season caviar stuffing.

Stay safe [ edit ]

Snakes and bears are rare attackers in the wild, lest provoked. More dangerous are infectious ticks which are active most of all in spring. Use spray against ticks.

Go next [ edit ]

Khabarovsk is the hub for regional air travel with important flights to Russian destinations Anadyr , Irkutsk , Krasnoyarsk , Magadan , Moscow , Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky , Yakutsk , and Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk , as well as international flights to Niigata , Japan and to Seoul , Korea . There are no direct flights to/from the US .

The next major stops to the east on the Trans-Siberian Railway are Ussuriysk and Vladivostok ; to the west, Birobidzhan .

There is a regular ferry from Vanino (the terminus of the Baikal-Amur Mainline ) to Kholmsk , Sakhalin .

Ontario Amazon River

How to spend a weekend in and around Ontario's 'Amazon river'

Latest Videos

With summer weather around the corner, it’s time to start planning road trips and your next adventure. There’s no need to travel far for beaches, adventures and Amazon-esque views.

A two-and-a-half-hour drive from the city you come to Norfolk County and two Provincial Parks that offer warm waters, sandy beaches and lots to explore.

Where to Explore

There is so much to explore in this area of Southwestern Ontario if you like beaches, water and adventure.

Long Point Provincial Park is a World Heritage biosphere due to its 40 km sandpit. This park, Ontario's 4th oldest, is considered to be one of North America’s top places to see birds with over 300 species migrating there.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Long Point Island Hugger Tours (@long_point_iht)

The park has 1.5km of sandy beaches, a 5km paved road bike path and over 250 campsites to enjoy. The best way to explore is by water renting or bringing a canoe or paddleboard to navigate the sheltered marshes.

Nearby Turkey Point is a smaller Provincial Park. The park boasts 1-4 km of hiking trails, 2km of sandy beaches with sandbars to swim on and what remains of their old golf course.

My favourite part of this area is Big Creek . The river, which is located at and around the Big Creek National Wildlife Area will make you feel like you're in the Amazon. The river is flanked by massive trees and vines that will make you half expect to see some monkeys swinging by.

There are lots of birds here and hours of river to explore. The water is deep enough to keep you moving in the current yet shallow enough to see the occasional snake or fish swimming along.

Near Port Rowan there are a few launch sites if you have your own gear. If you don't know where to start or don’t have your own kayak or paddleboard, check out Long Point Eco-Adventures . They offer multi-hour tours or rentals for whatever you need.

Long Point Eco-Adventures also offers a massive range of adventure packages including paddling, ziplining, axe throwing, observatory tours and foraging workshops. You can book a day adventures or build them into a multi-day foodie or adventure package.

Lake Erie Beach

Lake Erie Shores.

Where to eat

There are a few recommended restaurants in the area and loads of small breweries and wineries worth checking out. Sandbar on the Beach has a beautiful beach-side patio offering wings, appetizers, burgers and a range of drinks.

A short drive down the road is Jetty Bar and Grill . Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner on weekends, they offer tacos, wings, pizzas and more at the ends of Lake Erie.

If you're more in the mood to taste the beers and wines of the region, there are many options to make it a tour. Charlottesville Brewing Company is nestled in the local Carolinian forest and prides itself on its sustainable take on farming and crafting.

Beyond a wide range of beers and flights, they have live music on weekends and other weekday events to consider. Nearby Blueberry Hill Winery sells unique small-batch blueberry-infused ciders and wines using some of the 13 kinds of blueberries grown on-site.

Where to stay

There are a range of options for overnights here. You can glamp with Long Point Eco-Adventures in one of their pods or a large cabin for between $100 to $350 a night for double occupancy. They also run The Harbourview Inn with simple king and mixed bedrooms.

If you're interested in camping, Long Point and Turkey Point offer hundreds of treed campsites bookable on the Ontario Parks website . If you can convince a group of friends to adventure, places like Union Hotel and websites like Airbnb have accommodations for 6+ friends.

These Russian stone carvings date back to 12,000 BC. WHAT??!

dnd travel rhodes

With its gracious, broad and tree-lined boulevards, well maintained turn of the 19th to 20th century buildings and a lively riverfront, the city of Khabarovsk is often called the most European city in Asia. Nothing in the tranquil city hints of a history that goes beyond the middle of the 19th century, but a short road trip along the Amur River is enough to unfurl a treasure trove of petroglyphs (prehistoric rock carvings) that are believed to date back to 12,000 BC.

Khabarovsk's city center

Khabarovsk's city center

The Khabarovsk Krai, which has about 789,000 square kilometers of territory, is one of the most sparsely populated places on the planet. These vast swathes of emptiness are visible when one drives on the highway that connects Khabarovsk with the industrial city of Komsomolsk-on-Amur.

The Nanai village of Sikachi-Alyan on the Amur River

The Nanai village of Sikachi-Alyan on the Amur River

75 kilometers north of Khabarovsk and just off the highway and on the right bank of the Amur is the Nanai village of Sikachi-Alyan, where the petroglyphs are located. Residents call the village the ‘home of angry spirits’, thanks to the mystical occurrences that many have claimed to witness there.

History on the rocks

The area has about 200 petroglyphs, with a significant number being well preserved. The petroglyphs are easily accessible, as they are near the water’s edge on basalt boulders.

Petroglyphs of Sikachi-Alyan

Petroglyphs of Sikachi-Alyan

The best time to visit the area is actually early or late winter (despite the brutal cold), since the overflowing waters of the Amur hide them in the warmer months. Floods and ice floes have also caused considerable damage to many of the petroglyphs. Locals say some of the boulders have been turned upside down.

The carvings that date from different periods depict hunting scenes, animals, such as elk, horses and mammoths, shamans and shamanic masks and even people sitting in boats.

dnd travel rhodes

Russia’s Far East is believed to have been one of the last habitats of mammoths before they became extinct. Among the best-preserved petroglyphs of Sikachi-Alyan, there is one engraving that clearly depicts a mammoth, while another shows a mammoth with an unknown creature. There’s also a large depiction of a beast with a tail.

Svetlana Onenko, a local historian who is also the curator of the indigenous people’s ethnographic museum and cultural center in Sikachi-Alyan, says the very existence of the mammoth depictions proves that the petroglyphs date back to around 12,000 BC. She adds that the ancient dwellers of this area probably also hunted mammoths.

The older images, dating to the Paleolithic age, were carved out using stone tools. It should be noted that some archaeologists argue that the wild horses depicted in some of the petroglyphs did not exist in the Amur Region even in the Neolithic age.

dnd travel rhodes

The newer carvings, including those of shamans and shamanic masks were used with more modern tools. These images are sacred to the Nanai and other indigenous groups who live in the village with a total population of just 300. Onenko says the members of the indigenous community are descended from the people who carved out the petroglyphs. Some European anthropologists, however, believe that the indigenous people were more recent settlers, who moved to the area around 2,000 years ago from Manchuria.

An abode of Shamanism

Neo-Shamanists visit the area from different parts of the world and take part in rituals, which some suspect as being influenced by a cult. Such is the belief in Shamanism in this area that the museum, which has a large number of indigenous artefacts, crafts and ancient Chinese coins, keeps its Shamanic objects in a designated space that is ritually blessed. “Shamanic objects are believed to possess a powerful (and potentially dangerous) energy,” Onenko says.

Locals claim to spot mystic occurrences near the so-called Starukha (Eng.: “old lady”) rock formation. According to indigenous legends, human beings did not die at one point of time, but their population grew so large that there wasn’t enough food for everyone. So the earth’s spirits decided that people, like animals, would also have to die.

The Starukha was apparently the first human being to face death and ended up turning into that big (and apparently haunted) rock.

First Russian visitor

While the Nanai and other indigenous groups were aware of the existence of the petroglyphs for centuries, the outside world came to know of them only in 1859, a year after the foundation of the city of Khabarovsk.

This “discovery” was made by Richard Maack, a geographer, naturalist and explorer who set out on an expedition of the Amur and Ussuri valleys. Maack, who was born in the Russian Empire’s Baltic governorate of Livonia, studied natural sciences at the University of St. Petersburg and undertook several expeditions to Siberia and the Russian Far East in the 1850s.

Maack’s main area of interest was botany and six previously unknown plants that he collected by the Amur were named after him. His expedition north of the newly-founded Khabarovsk led him to Sikachi-Alyan, where he spotted the petroglyphs. There are less than a handful of surviving copies of Maack’s book titled, ‘Travel on the Amur river made by order of the Siberian department of the Emperor’s Russian Geographical Society in 1855’, which contains a wealth of information.

Russian archaeologists, scientists and historians took a great interest in the petroglyphs in the 20th century. In the 1930s, archaeologist Nikolai Kharlamov photographed them in detail. Three decades later, ethnographer and historian Alexei Okladnikov went on several expeditions to the area and wrote about the petroglyphs in detail in two books. His findings suggest that the artwork of Sikachi-Alyan had some resemblance to its counterparts from South East Asia, Polynesia and Australia.

The petroglyphs of Sikachi-Alyan are now among the most visited sites in Khabarovsk Krai. The Russian federal government was declared the legal owner of the petroglyphs in 2018 and efforts are underway to better preserve them, as well get the rock formations listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.

Travel | travel troubleshooter: road scholar downgrades traveler from business to economy.

Author

I spent $3,000 on business-class airfare. I’d like to get a refund for the fare difference. But so far, both Road Scholar and British Airways have refused. Can you help?

— Maureen Kelleher, Simsbury, Connecticut

ANSWER: Flight cancellations happen. But when they do, you should receive a refund for your downgrade from business class to economy.

British Airways’ general conditions of carriage — the legal agreement between you and the airline — addresses a change of schedule like the one you experienced. It explicitly says that you will get a refund when there is a fare difference and you use the ticket. Road Scholar’s terms and conditions don’t address an involuntary downgrade like the one you suffered.

There are also Department of Transportation rules that have to be followed. It says that you’re entitled to a refund if you’re involuntarily moved to a lower class of service. For example, if you buy a first-class ticket and get downgraded to economy class because of an aircraft change, the airline must refund the fare difference. If your flight had originated in the United States, DOT rules would have applied.

I think you have a strong case for a refund. So, what’s going on here? I reviewed the paper trail between you and Road Scholar. Since the tour operator had booked your flights, it was responsible for getting you your refund, so you went to the right place. But after four months, you weren’t getting anywhere. It was time to call my advocacy team.

I could see no reason for the delay in your refund. In fact, two other members of your party had already filed successful credit card disputes to recover their money. By the way, I don’t recommend doing that as a first step to recovering your money. It’s always better to ask the company for a refund first. You can find the executive contacts for Road Scholar on my consumer advocacy site, Elliott.org .

I contacted Road Scholar on your behalf. A representative responded to me shortly after that.”I’m happy to report that we have resolved the situation with Maureen and are issuing her a refund,” she said. “Her previous complaints had gotten caught up in the wrong department. Thanks for the nudge to escalate so we could get her talking to the right people to resolve her issue.”

This Scenic Arizona Road Is the Most Distracting Drive in the U.S. for Its Beauty, According to a New Report

The Red Rock Scenic Byway in Arizona is just too dang pretty.

Some roads are simply more beautiful than others. Some are so stunning, in fact, that they are downright distracting. And new research from the personal injury law firm Jason Stone Injury Lawyers is showcasing which American roadways are in the latter.

In May, the law firm dropped its research report, which analyzed America’s byways based on a host of scenic factors that the lawyers said "could distract the driver’s attention."

The researchers focused their work on the All-American Roads (AAR), as designated by the Federal Highway Administration . As the administration described, "to be designated as an All-American Road, a byway must meet criteria for at least two intrinsic qualities that are nationally significant and have one-of-a-kind features that do not exist elsewhere. The road or highway must also be considered a 'destination unto itself.' That is, the road must provide an exceptional traveling experience so recognized by travelers that they would make a drive along the highway a primary reason for their trip."

The study then ranked which of these are the most distracting based on the number of related hashtags mentions they receive on Instagram and paired this with their individual TripAdvisor ratings. After looking at the data, it named the Red Rock Scenic Byway in Arizona the nation's most distracting.

"The iconic red sandstone canyon near Sedona city measures only 7.5 miles, but visitors will likely spend more time there than just the 20 minutes it takes to cover the entire byway," the findings noted. "The Red Rock has a record 1.68 million related hashtags on Instagram and 4,285 reviews on TripAdvisor rating it as a 5-star scenic drive."

However, the Las Vegas Strip in Nevada came in a close second, "as one of the hardest roads to concentrate on while driving," thanks to all those glowing lights. The road, the team added, has 1,460,384 hashtag mentions with an average TripAdvisor rating of 4.5 stars.

Joining these two on the list are the Blue Ridge Parkway in North Carolina and the Acadia Byway in Maine in third and fourth place, which both feature gorgeous natural scenery that is absolutely worth pulling over to view. Two California roadways, the San Luis Obispo North Coast Byway and the Big Sur Coast Highway (aka Highway 1), round out the top five.

“Some of these roads are so mesmerizing that it is easy for drivers to get distracted by all these beautiful surroundings our country has to offer," a spokesperson for Jason Stone Injury Lawyers shared.

But they also offered this advice: "Some people might even be tempted to slow down as they reach a particularly eye-catching view. Therefore, it is sensible to make regular pitstops along the way to enjoy the scenery and, ideally, have an alternative driver always available in the front passenger seat.”

Travel is both joyful and stressful. Here’s how I overcome anxiety on the road

A s a long-time sufferer of mild depression and anxiety, I find travel bittersweet. Lost luggage, delayed transport, navigating an unfamiliar environment… the risks and hurdles can be especially triggering for those, like me, who are less resilient.

From crippling homesickness in Sarajevo to angst in Azerbaijan, I’ve had some very low moments across almost three decades of globetrotting.

Yet despite these pitfalls, travel has also been a vast source of joy. Spanning a rite-of-passage summer in Salamanca (in which my Spanish and self-confidence soared) to an eye-opening festival in India (involving coconuts and a group of holy nude men), my trips in over 55 countries have truly enriched my life. Refreshing and resetting, thrilling and wondrous, they’ve often conversely been a saving grace.

So, in light of the UK’s upcoming Mental Health Awareness Week (13-19 May), I’m sharing a few tips I’ve discovered on managing mental health when travelling.

Medication mistakes can ruin a trip - I’ve learned the hard way

Ten years ago, my parents invited me to join them on an amazing trip to New Zealand. Unsurprisingly I jumped at the chance.

Unfortunately, though, I made a blunder; just before this journey-of-a-lifetime, I came off the antidepressants I’d been taking since my teens. My mild anxiety and depression seemed to be better, my dosage was low anyway and I’d weaned myself off gradually as per the doctor’s advice. Surely I’d be ok? Wrong.

No sooner had we got to Singapore (our outward stopover) than I was having panic attacks, worsened by the time difference and new surroundings. I muddled through the holiday with erratic mood swings and a persistent sense of dread. It was a massive shame: not least for my parents, who’d kindly invited me along.

The lesson: try to avoid major medication changes just before going away, no matter how confident you feel. Other tips include checking how to access medical facilities in your destination and being aware of any relevant rules; for example, certain countries require a doctor’s letter for prescription drugs.

Always disclose any health conditions on your travel insurance (although several insurers allow you to choose not to be covered for these if you feel it’s not necessary).

How I lessen anxiety while travelling

Get anxious easily? Develop contingency plans to lessen the risk of stressful situations. I no longer book an airport connection of less than 90 minutes, in case of a delay with the preceding flight, and download plenty of escapist entertainment beforehand to make waits more bearable.

Group tours  are another consideration if you’re solo and worry about logistics, though ensure the format’s right for you. I’ve found a happy medium in options like Intrepid’s ‘Original’ and G Adventures’ ‘Classic’ trips, which attract a wide range of like-minded travellers via comfortable lodgings and a mix of cultural inclusions and downtime.

Groups are typically capped at 16 people, and my companions have spanned twenty-something Europeans to middle-aged Aussies and a lively Canadian couple in their seventies. I also pay for a single supplement, as I find my own space invaluable.

One last pointer if you suffer from post-trip blues - plan a treat for after you return, maybe a day trip or meal out. If you have the luxury, book one or two days off work too, to help you ease back into daily life.

How to make travel more meaningful

Bungee jumping over a Nepalese ravine, spending time with Chinese yak herders, meandering around Europe ’s fairy-tale cities… I’ve had countless enriching travel adventures. Some have even helped me make sense of my own life at home.

That said, travel can also feel draining and disappointing. In an age when so much is already known, and there’s endless content telling us what to see and do, it’s easy to lose curiosity and purpose - which in turn can affect wellbeing.

I enjoyed reading Stephen W Brock’s ‘Hidden Travel’ for handy hints on making trips more rewarding, from connecting with locals to stepping outside your comfort zone . One of my favourite suggestions? Having a goal, whether that’s seeking out Riga’s Art Nouveau treasures or brushing up on your Spanish in Mexico.

As well as boosting mental health generally, things like talking to a friend, journaling or a few minutes of meditation can help you find greater meaning in your experiences as well. A ‘ digital detox ’ could also be beneficial, if you dare.

How I manage my expectations when travelling

I love author Alain de Botton’s dry observation in his book ‘The Art of Travel’: that when we travel, we bring ourselves with us. Your partner’s untidy habits will no doubt still annoy you, and that unresolved work issue will still niggle.

Add to this all the boring (and sometimes stressful) minutiae involved in travel, from the long wait at the baggage carousel to the mundane outskirts of that picture-postcard town, and it’s clear those curated Instagram feeds and colourful travelogues don’t tell the full story.

As I’ve found myself, travel can be escapist and often triggers moments of huge joy and wonder. But, as with life in general, there’s a lot of humdrum among the highlights. So try and be positive but pragmatic; manage your expectations accordingly, avoid comparisons with impossible ideals and anticipate things won’t always go to plan.

Remember to look after your physical health too

Robust mindsets and a sense of meaning are all very well, but they’re hard to maintain if you don’t feel good physically. Once, failing to drink much in hot weather, I became quite dehydrated - something that took several litres of water, rehydration salts and a long rest to rectify. Needless to say, until my headache and fatigue shifted, my mood was pretty poor.

From activities and time zones to cuisine and climate, going away can mean many variations on your usual environment. Most of us know to wise up on specific advice for where we’re going, whether that means getting certain vaccines or swerving the tap water, but might forget that the usual health advice applies too.

Fresh air, exercise, healthy eating and drinking, a regular sleep pattern - they all still boost physical and mental wellbeing, wherever you are in the world.
