Dweezil Zappa and his band performed very well. I would have preferred more emphasis on songs with vocals than instrumental material. There was one humorous piece with the drummer singing as 'Chewbacca' that was long for the gag and associated music. I would be happy to see Dweezil and his colleagues perform again. I am glad that Frank Zappa's music is being performed live.

Dweezil and his crew were superb this night. The last show in NA before heading to Europe next month as I understand. Do not fear, as he'll be back next year!
This multi-talented group were having almost as much fun playing as we were listening, leaving us all completely satiated yet wanting more as we left. (If that makes any sense) What a wonderful trip back in time yet so fresh, vivid and totally enjoyable an event. If given the chance, see Dweezil and his band, go out of your way if you have to (We went from Saskatoon)you will not regret a few hours drive and you'll have a memory that I'm sure will last.
It's only a couple of days since the concert and my face still hurts from the shit eating grin I had through the whole concert!

Artist Information
The son of Frank Zappa, Dweezil Zappa was born on September 5, 1969 in Los Angeles.
It was inevitable that from the moment of his birth his life would be filled wall-to wall with music (his father having listed his religion as “musician” on Dweezilʼs birth certificate). Dweezilʼs early years were spent largely away from the spotlight -- something of a rarity for the child of a celebrity, but perfect for cultivating a close relationship with his family.
Having watched his father perform concerts from the side of the stage since he was in diapers it was no surprise that he began to show an interest in music early on. At 6 years old he received his first guitar, a Fender Music Master, from his dad. It wasn't until he was 12 that he began to show a serious interest in manipulating the instrument to make music. Having primarily heard the music his father was working on or listening to at home while growing up, Dweezil soon found himself exposed to some new sounds on the radio. Besides his father's music he began listening to the Beatles, Queen, AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, The Who and Jimi Hendrix. Like many aspiring guitarists of his generation, Dweezil ‘s ear was caught in a stranglehold by the trailblazing guitar styles of Edward Van Halen and Randy Rhoads.
To gain more fundamental knowledge of technique and scales Dweezil was fortunate to have some assistance from one of the musicians in his father's band at that time, Steve Vai. Dweezil became remarkably proficient in a very short amount of time due to his intense practicing sessions.
Later that year he recorded his first single, “My Mother Is A Space Cadet”, produced by Edward Van Halen and released on Frank Zappaʼs Barking Pumpkin label.
In 1984, Dweezil contributed guitar solos to both “Stevieʼs Spanking” and “Sharleena” on Frankʼs album Them Or Us.
In 1986, Dweezil made his debut in Hollywood as an actor with his role in the classic 80s film “Pretty In Pink." 1987 saw Dweezil raise his profile further with another film role alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger and Mick Fleetwood in "The Running Man."
In television he worked as a guest MTV VJ. During that same period he recorded and released his first full length album, Havinʼ A Bad Day. This album contained the single “Letʼs Talk About It” which featured Moon Zappa on vocals and found itself on regular rotation on MTV. The video featured cameo appearances from Frank Zappa, Robert Wagner, Don Johnson and Jane Fonda as well.
Around this same time, Dweezil made his own cameo appearances on records for a variety of diverse artists. He played a solo on the Fat Boys "Baby You're A Rich Man” as well as on the Grammy-nominated cover of "Wipeout" with Herbie Hancock and Terry Bozzio from the "Back To The Beach" film soundtrack. He was asked to join Stevie Ray Vaughan and Bonnie Raitt in contributing guitar performances to Miami Vice star Don Johnson's solo album. While Dweezil actually played on the song "The Last Sound Love Makes" it was his appearance in the video for Don Johnson’s single “Heartbeat” that would most notably link him to the project.
1988 saw Dweezil sign a deal with Chrysalis Records, releasing his second album My Guitar Wants To Kill Your Mama.
More TV work followed in 1990 Dweezil and Moon Zappa starred with Laverne And Shirley legend Cindy Williams in a sitcom for CBS titled Normal Life.
With the release of his third album Confessions in 1991, Dweezil began to branch out musically, blending his heavy rock approach with touches of his fatherʼs distinct compositional insignia. Guest appearances on this album pointed the way toward the future for Dweezil, including contributions from Nuno Bettencourt, Gary Cherone and Pat Badger of Extreme and legendary guitarists Warren DeMartini, Steve Lukather and Zakk Wylde as well as Frank Zappa sidemen Mike Keneally and Scott Thunes. Both Moon and Ahmet Zappa also added vocals to the album. Dweezil conceived and directed 2 videos from the album, 'Gotta Get To You' and 'Vanity' both of which featured Robert Wagner as a guest star. Robert Wagner has appeared in 4 of Dweezil's videos as well as the "Music For Pets" infomercial spoof.
There were a handful of live shows played to support the Confessions album. That tour saw the band develop a unique set of skills and usher in the birth of a remarkable non-stop medley that grew to contain 200 songs performed in 20 minutes. After completing the Confessions Tour Dweezil formed a new band and project with Ahmet called ‘Z’.
Armed with a mountain of material and no permanent drummer the band entered the family-owned rehearsal space called Joe's Garage and rehearsed with several different drummers who ended up playing on tracks for the new album. Those drummers included Terry Bozzio, Mark Craney, Toss Panos, and Tal Bergman. Rather than move to a studio they set up for recording rehearsals. The band recorded over 3 dozen tracks at Joe's Garage. The Shampoohorn album was completed in 1992 but awaited it's release over a year later. It was eventually released with 2 different track listings.
The band featured Mike Keneally and Scott Thunes and initiated its new permanent drummer, Berklee School of Music-trained drummer par excellence Joe Travers before departing for a world tour. Thunes departed later in 1994 and was replaced by Bryan Beller who had attended classes at Berklee alongside Joe Travers. The band toured the US and Europe in 1995. They played original material as well as some more oddball medleys including the infamous "Peavey Medley."
In 1996 they released a follow-up album, Music For Pets. By the time of the albumʼs release, both Beller and Keneally had left the band and Z gradually ceased to exist. Dweezil stayed in the public eye however with several projects including composing the theme music for the Emmy Award winning Fox television show "The Ben Stiller Show" and on camera TV appearances including taking the role of Ajax in the Klasky Csupo animated series Duckman and a TV series for the USA network called Happy Hour which he starred in alongside Ahmet.
2000 saw Dweezil issue his first solo album since 1991ʼs Confessions... with the release of Automatic. By this time, Dweezilʼs musicianship had come full-circle as he showed off his guitar virtuosity with eclectic all guitar orchestrations of "You're A Mean One Mr. Grinch" and "Hawaii 5-0."
In 2003 More television work came about as Dweezil formed a band for the WB unconventional improvisational comedy "On the Spot" and performed live in each episode.
He also composed the theme music for the WB series "The Jamie Kennedy Experiment" and composed dozens of tracks for the music library Extreme Music. Many of these tracks are heard on various television shows around the world.
The next several years saw Dweezil preparing to take on an extremely difficult challenge -- bringing his fatherʼs legendary music back to the concert stage. In 2006, some indication of what could be expected surfaced with Dweezilʼs next solo album Go With What You Know.
Dweezil's current lineup is considered his best version ever. Now a 7-piece band, they are firing on all cylinders propelled by the rhythm section of Ryan Brown on drums and Kurt Morgan on bass. Boundless energy is contributed by the rest of the line-up which includes Sheila Gonzalez, Chris Norton, Cian Coey and boy wonder, Adam Minkoff.
Dweezil's has two daughters, Zola Frank Zappa (born 2006) and Ceylon Indira Zappa (born 2008). His family expanded to include stepdaughter, Mia in 2010. Dweezil and wife, Megan reside in Los Angeles.

Dweezil’s 2023 update
Dweezil, thanks for the update. Sorry to hear there are no live shows planned for the immediate future. Covid had a disproportionally negative effect on bands (and roadies) playing smaller venues than say, stadium size shows. I’m guessing the latter are bankrolled by deeper pockets and have insurance for such things. And $109K per month for a tour bus is ridiculous. Maybe you could get one of those residency shows at a casino in Vegas for a few months (like Santana) so the fans would travel to you. That would eliminate a lot of costs. Just tryin’ to think of a work around…….. One thing’s for sure: when you do go on tour again tickets will be in high demand. You and your shows are greatly missed.

Dweezil Zappa rebrands upcoming shows as Cease And Desist tour
Dzweezil takes a swipe at family legal feud by changing name of his tour yet again
Dweezil Zappa will perform his father Frank’s music under the banner of the Cease And Desist tour as the family feud over copyright infringement rumbles on.
Dweezil has toured under the banner Zappa Plays Zappa for 10 years but recently renamed it as Dweezil Zappa Plays Frank Zappa amid legal disputes between the guitarist and the Zappa Family Trust over trademarks and music licensing.
In a blog post , Dweezeil says: “I understand there may be some public confusion about all of this. Multiple name changes etc. I also understand that this drama may be a turn off to people.
“At the end of the day, I believe my father’s music deserves to be heard not silenced. I will now be playing it with an even stronger resolve than ever before under the name my father gave me – Dweezil Zappa.
“I would like to thank everyone for their support. Because of the absurdity of it all I have named our upcoming tour the Cease And Desist Tour 2016.”

All four of Zappa’s children are beneficiaries of the Zappa Family Trust. Following the death of their mother Gail last year – who managed Zappa’s musical legacy since his death in 1993 – Ahmet and Diva were left in charge of the organisation as its trustees.
Their threatened legal action has fuelled tension with their siblings, Dweezil and Moon.

The trust claims that they own the Zappa name, and that Dweezil risked copyright infringement damages of $150,000 each time he played a song without proper permission.
Meanwhile, two previously unreleased Frank Zappa albums will be released on July 15.
Frank Zappa For President and The Crux Of The Biscuit will be issued by Universal Music and are the latest in a long line of posthumously released Zappa albums.
Frank Zappa For President features mainly composed on the Synclavier, an instrument Zappa turned to in 1990 when he was diagnosed with terminal prostate cancer.
The Crux Of The Biscuit features music recorded during the same sessions for his 1974 album Apostrophe.

NEWS... BUT NOT AS YOU KNOW IT
Celebrities picking unique baby names might be amusing – but it’s actually pretty bleak
Share this with
Celebrities, celebrities, celebrities. Why do they always give their sprogs such bizarre names?
When was the last time an A-lister opted for a sturdy Kate or George over Katamalia and Gorgeous? Nope, not happening: they prefer Bambi ( Molly Mae and Tommy Fury ), Rocky ( Kourtney Kardashian ) and Apple (who else but Gwyneth Paltrow ).
But this desire for a unique baby name transcends the world of celebrity and is seeping into UK households, according to Sophie Kihm from Nameberry, who spoke to Metro.co.uk last year.
‘New word names are on the rise across the English-speaking world. In England and Wales , names like Raine, Dusty, Storm, and Navy are trending for girls, while Sunny, Zephyr, and Forest are rising for boys. Ocean is hot for both sexes,’ she said. Wavy, indeed.
So what is going on: why do we and celebrities choose weird – and sometimes wonderful, sometimes not-so – names?
Chartered Psychologist Dr Mark Rackley tells Metro.co.uk it’s more to do with the parents’ image of themselves than their aspirations for the child.
‘Having a unique name draws attention to the parent and the child. The parent will view this as positive attention and will enjoy this attention (the same cannot be said for the child),’ he said.
‘Some people also want the unique name to create a sense of who or what they are in society, such as believing that certain names are more associated with the upper classes, showing that you are highly educated or well-travelled. Whatever the reason, it serves a purpose for the parent.’
So are weird baby names a sign of a wanting ego? It appears this might be the case, which could go some way to explaining why celebrities – who live in and thrive off the limelight – coin the weirdest names around.
While Dr Mark thinks some children will ‘embrace the name and own it,’ he says it doesn’t always go so well.
‘They can also resent the parents for giving them the name in the first place and this creates friction in the relationship,’ he explains.
Ye have been warned. Back to Oliver, it is.
Elon Musk and Grimes’ baby names
Of course Elon Musk and Grimes called their child little, er, X Æ A-ii. Originally, their son – who they welcomed in 2020 – was called X Æ A-12, but due to that darn mediaeval thing called Californian law, which prohibits names including numbers, they swapped 12 out for Roman numerals.
In the days following the little one’s birthday, Grimes tweeted an explanation for the weird moniker, as she wrote: ‘X, the unknown variable. Æ, my elven spelling of Ai (love &/or Artificial intelligence).
‘A-12 = precursor to SR-17 (our favourite aircraft). No weapons, no defences, just speed. Great in battle, but non-violent.’
The second A is named after Archangel, Grimes’ favourite song and 12 is the Chinese zodiac sign of the rat – 2020 is believed to be the year of the Metal Rat.
Elon addressed his baby mama’s explanation, as he replied: ‘SR-71, but yes.’
Okay then!
Musk is also dad to Nevada, Griffin, Vivian, Kai, Saxon, Damian, Strider, Azure, and X’s younger sister, Exa Dark Sideræl Musk, and brother, who was reportedly welcomed in 2023, Techno Mechanicus. Of course.
Jimmy Carr ‘s baby name
Comedian Jimmy Carr revealed in 2021 that he secretly welcomed a son called Rockefeller in 2019 with his partner Karoline Copping .
He revealed the unusual moniker in an interview with the Radio Times that year, telling them his toddler is named after John D Rockefeller, the Standard Oil magnate, richest person in modern history and wealthiest American of all time, although added: ’Also with a hint of Chris Rock, the greatest ever comedian.’
Nara and Lucky Blue Smith’s baby name
Nara Smith, 22, and her husband, Lucky Blue Smith, 25, welcomed their third child together earlier this month, calling her Whimsy Lou Smith.
Whimsy Lou’s siblings are called Slim Easy and Rumble Honey, while model Lucky Blue also shares a daughter – Gravity Blue – with his ex Stormi Bree, born in July 2017.
In December, Nara – who is a TikTok influencer and model – teased what she would be calling her children by listing the names she ‘loves’ but won’t be using.
‘These are some baby names that are on my list I won’t be using. For reference, our kids have pretty unique names, so these might be a little out there,’ she said, before listing names like Odie, Pepper, Dawn and Pear, as well as Cherry and Bubble for a middle name. For a boy, she said she liked the names Frosty, Sunny, Silver and Zen.
But what if Zen isn’t Zen…?
Frank Zappa’s baby names
The late rock n’ roll legend Frank Zappa, who died of prostate cancer in 1993, had four children with his wife Gail Zappa.
Their two sons are called Dweezil and Ahmet Zappa, with their daughters’ names Diva Thin Muffin and Moon Unit Zappa. Unique.
In 2013, Gail opened up about the reasons for their unusual names in an interview with The Times , as she explained Dweezil was Frank’s pet name for one of his toes. Okay.
Ahmet was the name of the family’s, er, fictional manservant they would pretend to have when they were ‘all but penniless’.
Diva was a loud baby, and Moon… While Zappa was leaving the house for a tour of Europe, Gail asked what they should call her. His response was ‘You can name it Moon or Motorhead.’
‘You know, you’re not [truly] related to your partner in life until you have a child together. So we became a family unit and that’s the significance of Moon’s middle name,’ Gail said.
Paul Danan’s baby name
Former Hollyoaks star Paul Danan welcomed a son in 2015, and called him, erm, DeNiro Danan. A tribute to Hollywood actor Robert DeNiro, perhaps…
Nick Cannon’s baby names
Where do we start? Nick Cannon has got so many children even his own brother Gabriel can’t keep track .
The US TV star now has 12 children with six different women called, deep breath: Monroe, Moroccan, Golden, Powerful, Zion, Zillion, Zen, Legendary, Onyx, Rise, Beautiful and Halo.
Kim Kardashian and Kanye West’s baby names
Kim Kardashian and Kanye West welcomed four children together during their eight-year relationship. North, Saint, Chicago and Psalm are their chosen names, and all have a deeper meaning
Chicago is a nod to the All Falls Down hitmaker’s hometown, while Kris Jenner previously revealed North means ‘highest power’.
‘[Kim] says that North is their highest point together,’ she explained.
When Saint was born a source told E! News the couple chose Saint because he was ‘a blessing,’ after Kim’s ‘difficult pregnancy.’
A friend of the couple told People that Ye sees names as an important part of identity. ‘Kanye believes that a name is extremely important and that it’s the first sense of identity that we have,’ they said, continuing: ‘He believes that people live up to their names, which is why he wanted a name with spiritual significance.’
As for Psalm, Jenner told ET ‘the inspiration was the Book of Psalms in the Bible’.
A source previously told People the name was a reflection of Kanye’s renewed dedication to his Christian faith.
Jason Lee’s baby name
Pilot Inspektor Riesgraf Lee was the name actor Jason Lee and Beth Riesgraf chose for their first child together in 2003.
Lee explained that the little boy’s name was inspired by one of Riesgraf’s favourite songs by indie rock band Grandaddy.
Shannyn Sossamon’s baby name
A Knight’s Tale actor Shannyn Sossamon and boyfriend Dallas Clayton named their son Audio Science, explaining: ‘We wanted a word, not a name, so my boyfriend read through the dictionary three or four times. We were going to call him Science, but thought it might get shortened to Sci, as in Simon.’
Penn Jillette’s baby name
Moxie CrimeFighter Jillette was the natural name magician Penn Jillette gave his daughter – of course.
In 2006 he told the New York Times in an email: ‘“Moxie” is a name that was created by an American for the first national soft drink and then went on to mean “chutzpah,” and that’s nice.’
Your Daily Horoscope
Daily horoscope today: April 29, 2024 astrological predictions for your star sign
‘Everyone I know with an unusual name loves it,’ he continued. ‘It’s only the losers named Dave that think having an unusual name is bad, and who cares what they think. They’re named Dave.’
