The Eagles Long Goodbye: See the setlist for the legendary rock band's final tour

eagles hotel california tour setlist 2023

It will be a long goodbye for the Eagles, who announced their final tour in July and vow to stay on the road through 2025 - or until they hit every market that might welcome them, sometimes more than once.

The Rock & Roll Hall of Famers kicked off their farewell at New York's Madison Square Garden Sept. 7 with a 23-song setlist that spotlights their myriad hits – "Take it Easy," "Witchy Woman," "Tequila Sunrise," "Life in the Fast Lane" and of course, "Hotel California" among them – and also paid tribute to "dear friend" Jimmy Buffett, who died Sept. 1 , and original Eagles bassist Randy Meisner, who died in July.

As on past tours, the core of Don Henley, Timothy B. Schmit and Joe Walsh are joined by upper-register maestro Vince Gill and Deacon Frey, son of the late Eagles legend Glenn Frey. The additional four musicians backing the Eagles augment an already pristine sound for this two-hour hits parade.

Here is a look at the songs being performed on the Eagles' Long Goodbye tour.

Eagles Kick Off 2023 “Hotel California Tour” with a Few Surprises: Review, Photos, and Setlist

The post Eagles Kick Off 2023 “Hotel California Tour” with a Few Surprises: Review, Photos, and Setlist appeared first on Consequence .

With over five decades of collective and individual achievements among them,  Eagles have reached rarified air. Nearly all the original members of the country-rock group that are on speaking terms with founding member Don Henley are still alive, still in remarkably good health, and somehow looking far younger than their actual ages. Their music still sells at a comfortable clip as well as popping up with regularity on classic rock radio and streaming playlists named “OK, Boomer.”

In 2023, the Eagles are now more an institution than a musical group. And like most artists of their vintage, seeing the group live becomes a matter of both excitement and trepidation. How well or poorly can these men replicate the songs of their youth?

The answer to that question: impressively well. On Sunday night at Portland Oregon’s Moda Center, as the band opened up their 2023 North American tour (get tickets here ), they hit nearly every mark and still managed to toss a few surprises into their three-hour set.

First, though, Eagles needed to deal with the business at hand. As this run of shows is dubbed the 2023 “Hotel California Tour,” the band got underway by playing their 1976 album in full. This included a corny bit of stagecraft with a wizened looking gent opening the night by traipsing slowly across stage with a copy of Hotel California under his arm before laying the LP on a turntable and dropping the needle. (The side flip was handled later by a buxom blonde in a suggestive black dress.)

From there, the Eagles — these days consisting primarily of Henley, bassist Timothy B. Schmit, guitarist Joe Walsh, and fantasy camp lottery winner Vince Gill — steadily knocked out each song on the record in order, with every moment recreated with care and accuracy. That meant pulling in members of the Oregon Symphony and a choir from the University of Portland to augment the lusher moments of “Wasted Time,” “Pretty Maids All in a Row,” and “Last Resort.” The album’s status as an all-timer is secure.

After a short break, the band returned to play, as Henley put it, “everything we know.” It was in the second set that the pleasant surprises and light stumbles came into play. The biggest moment of the night came when Henley introduced guest Deacon Frey to the stage.

The son of the late Eagles co-founder Glenn Frey, he was brought into the fold following the death of his father in 2016 but last year announced his departure from the group in order to, according to the press release, “forge his own path.” Yet, here he was again, lending his youthful glow to a few songs — “Already Gone” and “Take It Easy,” among them — once sung by his dad. It gave a welcome lift to an already elevated arena show.

Then there was Joe Walsh. The 75-year-old’s pact with Satan, which has helped him survive all manner of chemical dependencies and much personal turmoil, seems very much in place. His face was still an amoebic mass, warping and distending in response to his aqueous guitar solos and his own vocals, but what came out of it was lucid and strong. Walsh took an impressive amount of the spotlight, knocking out his Hotel California song, “In the City,” and a trio of tunes from his life outside Eagles with a supremely joyful countenance. If, at times, it looked like he was pulling it all out from deep within his core as he sang “Life’s Been Good” and “Rocky Mountain Way,” his performance never diminished.

Only Schmit revealed the effects of aging on his voice. His previously angelic tones on “I Can’t Tell You Why” sounded far more earthbound but no less pleasant to hear. Henley, too, has lost a little bit of the punch in his drumming, something that became apparent when the band’s touring percussionist took over the kit.

The show itself was remarkable enough, but what came out of the evening was a sense of how dedicated the remaining Eagles are to one another and to the people in their employ. As Henley noted when introducing the members of the Oregon Symphony, the white-haired gentleman leading those players was Jim Ed Norman, an arranger and producer who had worked on most of the band’s studio albums. Seated next to this writer in the arena was the son of Henley’s personal assistant, who told me that his dad had been working with the artists for the better part of 50 years. The band’s tour manager has been with them since the beginning. It seems that if you can stick it out with the Eagles, you’re in for life.

That was certainly the case for their many fans who swarmed the arena. For many, they’ve been listening to and loving the Eagles for their entire lives. Their dedication to the group is strong and unyielding. Neither the small hiccups in the show nor the recap of an exhausted writer will ever change that. Maybe nothing more need be said about the band other than a fervent hope that they may continue to tap into that peaceful, easy feeling for as long as they are able.

The Eagles Announce New 2023 ‘Hotel California’ Tour Dates

The Eagles aren't done yet. The legendary rock band (including Vince Gill ) have announced a new batch of tour dates featuring the iconic Hotel California album.

Six additional  Hotel California Tour dates have been tacked on to the 2023 calendar, bringing the total to 12, plus one non-tour show in California on Feb. 17.

The run is (for now) scheduled to end on April 7, but fans could be forgiven for hoping even more dates will be added.

Per our friends at Ultimate Classic Rock , the Hotel California Tour started in 2019 and paused in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2021 they picked back up with an aggressive slate of shows.

Don Henley ,  Joe Walsh  and  Timothy B. Schmit  will lead Gill and the rest of the touring band, orchestra and choir through the full Hotel California album (1976) and then greatest hits.

Deacon Frey will not be present for the shows. In April, the son of the late Glenn Frey stepped away from the band to pursue his own music. This tightens the band up to a four piece.

Tickets for these new Hotel California Tour dates will go on sale Jan. 13 at 10AM local time.

The Eagles kicked off the “Hotel California” concerts in 2019 in Las Vegas to rave reviews and critical acclaim. To date, the Eagles have performed more than 70 sold-out shows, including five nights at the famed Madison Square Garden in New York City, four nights at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, four nights at American Airlines Arena in Dallas, Texas, three concerts at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas, three nights at the Forum in Los Angeles, and multiple nights in Austin, TX, Denver, CO, Nashville, TN, San Francisco, CA, Phoenix, AZ, Seattle, WA, St. Paul, MN, and Toronto, ON.

“From the title track — a 6 1/2-minute flamenco-reggae ballad— to the elegiac closer ‘The Last Resort,’ it’s consummately performed…”   – Los Angeles Times

“The band performed the album from front to back, following with a blazing greatest hits set that had the audience at the sold-out arena constantly on its feet…With no exception, the songs have aged well, but how could they fail with the Eagles’ five-part harmony and five guitar-approach… (Henley’s) voice sounded as strong and pliant as it ever has, easily hitting the highest of notes, while retaining his trademark huskiness.”   – Billboard

“By now the orchestra has been joined by a choir. The Eagles’ sound, with its glowing harmonies, barely needs them, but they add to the sense of occasion – and the delight of the crowd. I’ve never seen so many songs receive a standing ovation.”   – Daily Mail

“…the Eagles spent more than 2 hours and 40 minutes on stage performing most of the best-known songs in their oeuvre, their voices sounding as robust as they did half their lifetimes ago. And the show was all the best adjectives you can think of — exhilarating, breathtaking, stunning, magical, triumphant.”   – Charlotte Observer

“It was a soulful, technically brilliant concert, with state-of-the-art sound engineering, wonderful performances and beautiful visuals presented on a giant screen behind the musicians.”

-Buffalo News

And it was…sublime. Eagles have long had a knack for precise, recording-perfect performances, and playing “Hotel California” was perhaps the finest exposition of that. The sound mix was pristine, the vocal harmonies were rich…”   – Oakland Press

“Everyone in the arena seemed to leap to their feet and start applauding at once. For a split-second I actually felt my eyes start to mist up. It was just so overwhelming, the power of (Henley’s) voice, the beauty of the song, the majestic-ness of the symphony, the thickness of the nostalgia hanging in the air.”   – Charlotte Observer

“What made the “Hotel California” portion of Thursday’s set so stunning was just how airtight the Eagles sounded… The “Hotel California” portion of the set was near perfection – a tight, 50-minute showcase of musicality that would have been worth the price of admission alone. But the night was far from over.”   – Cleveland Plain Dealer

Hotel California  is the third best-selling U.S. album in history, certified 26-times Platinum by the RIAA. After its release in 1976, it topped the charts and won two GRAMMY Awards for “New Kid in Town” and “Hotel California.”  Several of the songs from the album have never been performed since the original “Hotel California” tour.  The band’s  Their Greatest Hits 1971-1977  is the best-selling U.S. album in history, with the RIAA certifying the collection at 38-times Platinum.

In today’s faddish, fractured, rock landscape, the Eagles retain an appeal that transcends both generation and genre, cementing the band’s role as enduring musical icons. As the best-selling American band of the ’70s, and one of the top-selling acts of all time, the Eagles have sold more than 150 million albums worldwide, scored six #1 albums and topped the singles charts five times. They have won six GRAMMY® Awards, were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1998, in their first year of eligibility, and received the Kennedy Center Honors in 2016.

The Eagles brought their iconic masterpiece to life in Phoenix on Hotel California Tour

eagles hotel california tour setlist 2023

It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out why “Hotel California” is the album the Eagles have taken to revisiting in its entirety these past few years.

It’s their crowning achievement, a 26-times-platinum masterstroke.

The title track remains their greatest hit, an epic guitar solo tagged at the end of a wounded morality play about a hedonistic culture in a hell of its own making.

It’s the album that welcomed Joe Walsh to the table, expanding the scope of their sound even further than "One of These Nights."

The whole album has held up amazingly well, from the killer guitar riff Walsh brought to the party on "Life in the Fast Lane" to the bittersweet yacht-rock of "New Kid in Town," the soulful balladry of “Wasted Time" and the majesty of “Pretty Maids All in a Row.”

And the Eagles that returned to downtown Phoenix on Wednesday, March 1, for a sold-out show at Footprint Center made that album come alive in concert.

Eagles flashback: The Eagles honor Glenn Frey's memory in a hit-filled set while welcoming new members

The Eagles were joined by a symphony orchestra

Henley, Walsh and longtime member Timothy B. Schmit (whose first appearance on an Eagles album was just after “Hotel California”) were joined by country star Vince Gill, who signed on in 2017 after the death of founding member Glenn Frey.

Their ranks were further fleshed out by four touring members: Scott F. Crago on drums and percussion; Steuart Smith on guitar, mandolin and backing vocals; Will Hollis on keyboards, synths and backing vocals; and Michael Thompson on piano, keys, accordion and backing vocals.

Smith did a heroic job of duplicating the guitar licks and entire solos that defined so many of the Eagles greatest hits in a lineup that now features three extremely talented guitarists in Smith, Walsh and Gill.

Several songs featured a symphony orchestra conducted by their old pal Jim Ed Norman, who supplied the string arrangements on three Eagles albums, not the least of which was “Hotel California.”

A choir emerged in matching robes to join the orchestra in underscoring Henley’s plaintive vocal on “The Last Resort,” the song that brings the album to a stately finish.

Different Drum: How a pop song written by one of the Monkees made Linda Ronstadt a star

Following 'Hotel California' with 'Their Greatest Hits' and more

“That concludes the ‘Hotel California’ portion of the show,” Henley said, with a smile, “because albums were only 40 minutes long back then.”

After taking a beat to introduce “some very important people up here on the stage that are making all this happen,” including members of the Phoenix Metro Orchestra and Solis, Choir of the Sun, he promised they’d be back to “play everything else we know.”

That may have been a slight exaggeration, but they did come back from intermission with a second set that went on for an hour and 45 minutes and included every single on “Their Greatest Hits (1971–1975),” an album destined to remain the biggest-selling album in U.S. history, having overtaken Michael Jackson's "Thriller."

Frey’s son Deacon, who joined the band in 2017, left to pursue his own solo career in 2022, but Henley brought him out as a surprise guest after opening the second set with “Seven Bridges Road” to take the spotlight on two early hits his father used to sing.

At the end of "Peaceful Easy Feeling," a photograph of Glenn Frey filled the screen above the stage.

The orchestra returned on two second-half highlights — "Take it to the Limit" and a gorgeous "Desperado."

Henley also dusted off his solo hit “The Boys of Summer.” And Walsh did three non-Eagles songs — the James Gang hit “Funk #49,” the epic talk-box showcase “Rocky Mountain Way” and “Life’s Been Good” — in addition to taking a turn in the spotlight on two Eagles songs — the “Hotel California” ballad “Pretty Maids All in a Row” and “In the City,” one of four songs from “The Long Run.”

Review: Eddie Vedder's Innings Fest set was a ukulele-smashing triumph — complete with guest stars

Joe Walsh was a blast. But in the long run, it's the vocals that get you

Walsh will always be the Eagles wild card, a cartoonishly crowd-pleasing goofball who, as Schmit said, “makes great faces.”

But beneath the buffoonish exterior lies a priceless combination of raw talent and a tendency toward spontaneity in a show that might begin to feel a bit too smooth around the edges if they reined him in.

Having said that, the Eagles’ relentless pursuit of perfection is what elevates their live performances to a whole other level.

If Henley’s voice has aged more than a day or two in the 50 years since “Desperado” hit the streets, you’d be hard-pressed to hear it in his yearning vocal on the title track to “Hotel California,” much less the high notes on “One of These Nights.”

Festival review: The highs and lows of Innings Festival 2023 in Tempe from chilly weather to Randy Johnson

The Eagles still sound real (and flawless) in an age of smoke and mirrors

Schmit’s vocal showcase, “I Can’t Tell You Why,” remains a soulful highlight of the Eagles set. And Gill is a brilliant addition, a point made obvious before he’d even hit those Orbisonesque high notes on “New Kid in Town.”

But it's the way those voices blend that ultimately sets this band apart.

That airtight wall of harmonies supporting Gill’s angelic vocal when he hit the line about “tears on your shoulder” in “New Kid in Town” could not have been more breathtaking.

And there were countless other instances, from “Seven Bridges Road” to “Take it to the Limit,” that spoke to not just what amazing singers these guys are by nature but the discipline required to achieve that level of perfection while still sounding utterly human in an age of smoke and mirrors.

Eagles add 2023 Hotel California Tour dates

North American concerts added

Eagles featuring Don Henley, Joe Walsh, and Timothy B. Schmit, with Vince Gill are extending their Hotel California Tour into 2023. Shows return in February and March in Portland, Oregon; San Jose, California; Phoenix, Arizona; San Diego, California and the Grand Opening concert at Acrisure Arena in Palm Springs, California.

Each concert will feature Hotel California, performed live in its entirety from start to finish, accompanied by an orchestra and choir. After a short intermission the band will perform a full set of their greatest hits. All shows will begin at 8 pm.

Presales are available starting Thursday, October 27th at 10 am local time. A limited number of VIP packages, including premium seats, exclusive merchandise, parking & more, will be available. Tickets go on sale Friday, October 28th at 10 am local time through Ticketmaster .

The Eagles kicked off the Hotel California concerts in 2019 in Las Vegas to rave reviews and critical acclaim. To date, the Eagles have performed more than 70 sold out shows, including five nights at the famed Madison Square Garden in New York City, four nights at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, four nights at American Airlines Arena in Dallas, Texas, three concerts at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas, three nights at the Forum in Los Angeles, and multiple nights in Austin, TX, Denver, CO, Nashville, TN, San Francisco, CA, Phoenix, AZ, Seattle, WA, St. Paul, MN, and Toronto, ON.

Hotel California is the third best-selling US album in history, certified 26x Platinum by the RIAA. After its release in 1976, it topped the charts and won two Grammy Awards for “New Kid in Town” and “Hotel California.” Several of the songs from the album have never been performed since the original Hotel California Tour. The band’s Their Greatest Hits 1971-1977 is the best-selling US album in history, with the RIAA certifying the collection at 38-times Platinum.

In today’s faddish, fractured, rock landscape, the Eagles retain an appeal that transcends both generation and genre, cementing the band’s role as enduring musical icons. As the best-selling American band of the ’70s, and one of the top-selling acts of all time, the Eagles have sold more than 150 million albums worldwide, scored six No. 1 albums and topped the singles charts five times. They have won six Grammy Awards, were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1998, in their first year of eligibility, and received the Kennedy Center Honors in 2016.

Eagles Hotel California 2023 Tour Dates:

Feb 19 – Portland, OR @ Moda Center Feb 21 – San Jose, CA @ SAP Center Feb 24 – Palm Springs, CA @ Acrisure Arena Mar 1 – Phoenix, AZ @ Footprint Center Mar 3 – San Diego, CA @ Pechanga Arena

The Eagles Profile

The Eagles are a classic rock band who have sold more than 120 million albums worldwide while producing five #1 singles and six Grammy Awards. Their 3x Platinum two-disc compilation album ‘The Very Best Of” was released in 2003 and spent a total of 62 weeks on Billboard 200 chart. They are arguably known most for their single “Hotel California”.

2020 was the first Eagles tour since the death of lead singer Glenn Frey. Filling in on vocals for the tour are Glenn’s son, Deacon Frey, and Vince Gill. Most shows had to be cancelled due to the pandemic. That tour was rescheduled for 2021 and then eventually for 2022.

The Eagles announced their final farewell tour in 2023, where they will perform the entirety of their Hotel California album, along with other Greatest Hits. The success of that tour led to The Eagles extending the dates into 2024.

Eagles Kick Off 2023 “Hotel California Tour” with a Few Surprises: Review, Photos, and Setlist

What came through was Eagles' dedication to their fans and each other

Eagles Kick Off 2023 “Hotel California Tour” with a Few Surprises: Review, Photos, and Setlist
