Tour was good . Everything in order . Had a great time with driver Sam

Meghalaya (A Budget Friendly Tour) Tour

Meghalaya (A Budget Friendly Tour)

Everything went according to the agreed plan, so I have nothing to complain about. Sometimes the driving was too long for a single day, it would be nicer if the tour included moving to hotels closer to the destinations, which would allow for more time to visit other places. I went during March, which meant that waterfalls had minimum to no water, so if you are interested in that, I would suggest a different season. My suggestion to the tour operator would be to add tours for Meghalaya that include more physical activities, like the bamboo trek, which can appeal to younger people. Some of the activities were too simple and not really worth hours of driving. Thank you for organising my trip and answering all my queries!

We had a fantastic trip in the North East of India, Organized by Hemender from Travelcon.Visiting the serene mountains was a memorable trip for both of us and we were really felt like we are at a paradise. We informed hemender that we do not want to go the usual Itinerary and wanted few different things and he helped us to fulfil that requirements.I had been to India couple of Times so I knew how to negotiate on prices. There were few airlines and many transfers while visiting this majestic land but was handled seamlessly. Our local guides were awesome and experienced. Our Driver was also a nice person who took care of all our needs while driving. 10/10 I would recommend Travelcon among my friends/family members.

It almost took 3 years to come and explore the wildlife of North East India.During the 3 Years, Hemender was in regular touch and keep remining that your deposit is safe as well as your Tour is on hold. After the tour, I was amazed to see tigers, wild dogs and other wild animals.I am really happy after this tour and certainly I would recommend about Hemender and his company.

What people love about india (eastern) tours.

Overall in India we find that and have opportunity to go on an 11-day tour of North East India and it was truly an unforgettable experience. The tour package was well-organized and covered all the major destinations in the region, giving us a comprehensive overview of the culture, history, and natural beauty of this lesser-explored part of India. The tour started in Guwahati, the gateway to North East India, where we were greeted by our friendly and knowledgeable tour guide. From there, we traveled to Shillong, the capital of Meghalaya, known as the 'Scotland of the East' for its stunning landscapes and pleasant climate. We visited the famous Umiam Lake, also known as Barapani Lake, and were mesmerized by its crystal clear water and surrounding hills. Next, we headed to Cherrapunjee, one of the wettest places on earth, where we got to witness the spectacular Seven Sisters Waterfall and the living root bridges, a unique and fascinating man-made wonder. The tour also took us to Mawlynnong, known as the cleanest village in Asia, and we were amazed by its pristine surroundings and the warm hospitality of the locals. We then continued our journey to Kaziranga National Park, home to the famous one-horned rhinoceros. We were lucky enough to spot these magnificent creatures during our safari in the park. The tour also included a visit to Majuli Island, the world's largest river island, where we got to experience the unique Assamese culture and enjoy a traditional dance performance. The highlight of the tour was our visit to Tawang, located in the state of Arunachal Pradesh, which is home to the second-largest Buddhist monastery in the world. The monastery was a sight to behold, and we were fortunate to witness the daily rituals and prayers of the monks. The tour also took us to the picturesque Sela Pass, which offered breathtaking views of the Himalayan mountains. Throughout the tour, we were impressed by the beauty and diversity of North East India. The accommodations provided were comfortable and the food was delicious, giving us a taste of the local cuisine. Our tour guide was highly knowledgeable and shared interesting insights about the places we visited. Overall, I would highly recommend this 11-day tour package to anyone looking to explore the exotic North East region of India. It was a perfect blend of nature, culture, and adventure, and I returned home with a deeper appreciation for this lesser-known part of our country.

India’s Eastern Zone is rich in cultural heritage. Beaches, temples, monasteries, and a Buddhist circuit with a rural flavour are all available. Calcutta, India’s former capital, Puri & Bhubaneshwar, Buddhist Circuit in Bihar, Monasteries in Sikkim, and the Kanchenjunga Range of Mountains in Darjeeling are among the most popular tourist destinations in this region. Let us take a look at the list of 20 places to visit in East India in major detail.

1. Darjeeling, West Bengal

eastern india trip

Darjeeling is one of the most beautiful hill station places to visit in East India, with jaw-dropping scenery, mesmerising sunrises, the untouched beauty of the hills, the old-world charm of the past, and the welcoming smiles of the locals. Darjeeling, nestled amidst acres of lush green tea plantations on a steep mountain ridge, stands at a height of 2,050 metres above sea level, boasting cool climes all year. This picturesque hill station, located about 700 kilometres from Kolkata, is ideal for a romantic honeymoon.

2.  Kolkata, West Bengal

eastern india trip

Kolkata, India’s second-largest city, is a never-ending celebration of human existence, simultaneously luxurious and squalid, refined and frantic, pointedly futuristic while beautifully decaying. The capital of West Bengal, a vibrant 350-year-old metropolis on India’s Eastern Coast, thrives on contradictions and imposing spectacles; nothing is ordinary in this city. Kolkata, also known as the City of Joy, is the country’s artistic, cultural, and intellectual capital in every sense.

Kolkata’s streets are vibrant, busy, and chaotic, but they are also alive with life and creativity. The city has created a beautiful juxtaposition of old colonial-era charm with the nascent upcoming hipster culture that thrives among the city’s millennial residents, driven by the indomitable spirit of the self-made middle class.

3. Dooars, West Bengal

Dooars is a local name for the floodplains of North-East India around Bhutan, which stretch from the Teesta in the east to the Sankoshi in the west. Because the Dooars are the gateway to Bhutan, the name ‘Dooars’ was derived from the word ‘door.’ Jalpaiguri, Darjeeling, Siliguri, and other towns and districts in this region make up the Dooars. Imagine the mighty range of Eastern Himalayan mountains in the background, a band of thick forests, rich in species of Flora and Fauna, continued with tea gardens and cut here and there by water bodies. Dooars is smack dab in the middle of it all. This is the gate you don’t want to rush through.

4. Gopalpur, Odisha

eastern india trip

The quaint, tiny town of Gopalpur is located on the southern coast of Odisha, just 15 kilometres from the city of Behrampur. It was a seaport bustling with trade and commerce during the Colonial Era. Because of its remoteness, peace, and offbeat crowd, Gopalpur-on-Sea is considered one of India’s most beautiful beaches. The beaches are gleaming gold, and the azure waters of the Bay of Bengal provide the ideal setting for relaxation and immersion in nature. With more people becoming aware of its beauty, Gopalpur is quickly becoming one of the most sought-after beaches in the country.

5. Konark, Odisha

eastern india trip

Konark, in the Indian state of Orissa, is famous for the Sun Temple, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, as well as the annual dance festival and its beautiful sandy beaches. The Annual Dance Festival is a five-day cultural extravaganza that brings together exceptional dance talent from across the country. The celebrations take place against the backdrop of the Sun Temple, which adds to the overall grandeur and magnificence of the event. Aside from that, Konark hosts the Sun Festival, during which devotees bathe in the sea to offer prayers to the Sun God. The Dance Festival also features a Handicrafts Mela, where visitors can purchase one-of-a-kind and exquisitely handcrafted items that beautifully reflect Oriya art.

6. Mirik, West Bengal

Mirik, a hill town on the banks of a large lake, adds to North Bengal’s bounty. Mirik, nestled in the Himalayan Valley, offers more than just beautiful mountains and lakes. West Bengal tourism is incomplete without Mirik, which offers everything from romantic boating experiences to temples for the faithful and orchids and gardens for nature’s children. The densely populated, but not overcrowded town also has viewpoints for quiet contemplation and traditional Indian Bazaars where you can splurge. Going to Mirik for the ideal hill station getaway is an idea that will never fail you.

Most of the year, the weather in Kurseong is milder and pleasant. The ‘Land of White Orchids,’ as Kurseong is known, is named after the flowers that abound on its hilly slopes. At sunset, the sky becomes a kaleidoscope of the most beautiful colours.

It is 100 kilometres from Patna, Bihar’s capital and one of the most important Hindu and Buddhist pilgrimage sites. It is unique because of its natural surroundings, narrow byways, and historic structures. Gaya is a sacred site for Jains because it contains numerous Jain temples. If you want to experience Eastern India like a local, Bhubaneswar, the state capital of Odisha, is one of your best bets. This region, which fuses the rich history of the empire with the bustling metropolis, offers the best of both worlds. The Bindu Sarovara Lake, the Udayagiri and Khandagiri Caves, and the Odisha State Museum are all popular tourist attractions, but apart from that, take a stroll down the hawker streets and immerse yourself in the simple local culture.

10. Jalpaiguri, West Bengal

eastern india trip

Rarely does one come across a destination as tourist-friendly as Jalpaiguri. However, a significant portion of it remains untapped. Turbulent rivers battling their way out of steep gorges, vast stretches of forest cover, undulating Tea Estates, and the panoramic grandeur of the Himalayas are just a few of the jewels that drew the British deep into the heart of this land.

Simply driving around or going for a hike will never allow your eyes to rest. There is no better place for a tourist who is a nature lover or a fan of wildlife than this. In the various Sanctuaries, National Parks, and Tiger Reserves available, one can let their imagination run wild.

Chilka Lake attracts a variety of migratory and aquatic birds to its shores due to its unique ecosystem of sandy ridges and brackish waters. It’s the ideal spot for us to take in the allure of this tranquil lagoon, as well as an excellent spot for bird-watching. At the Satapada viewing point, you can even see bottlenose dolphins and the rare Irrawaddy dolphins. If you’re going to Chilika Lake, go in the winter because that’s when the migratory birds arrive!

Understand [ edit ]

Eastern India features Kolkata , once the capital of British India , and the temple cities of Puri , Bhubaneswar and Konark . The region stretches from the mountains to the coast, resulting in fascinating variations in climate. It is also the mineral storehouse of India, having the country's largest and richest mines.

Talk [ edit ]

Eastern India includes multiple states, and the locally spoken languages vary from one state to another. However, Hindi is used and understood widely, unless one is speaking to someone from a remote Benagli/Odiya/Sikkimese village. Bengali is the primary language in West Bengal. Odia (Oriya) is spoken in Odisha. Nepali is the preferred language in Sikkim. People of Gangtok and Darjeeling do understand Bengali and Hindi because these places are tourism destinations. English usage is limited mostly to the urban areas. A dialect of Hindi called Bhojpuri is widely used in Jharkhand.

'Namaste' or 'Namaskar' is the usual way of starting a conversation with someone. 'Bhaiya' or 'Dada' (only in Bengal) is the common way of addressing a man and 'Didi' is used to address a woman. 'Dhanyavad' (meaning 'thank you') is used at the end of any conversation.

Get in [ edit ]

By plane [ edit ]

Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport ( CCU  IATA ) is the gateway to Eastern India. There are airports in Ranchi, Jamshedpur, Siliguri, Durgapur, Bhubaneswar etc. Air connectivity is fair in this part of the country.

By train [ edit ]

Howrah and Sealdah are two of the busiest railway stations in the world. Kolkata is very well connected to the rest of the country by the railways. Tatanagar (Jamshedpur), Rachi, New Jalpaiguri (Siliguri), Malda, Asansol, Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Brahmapur, Jhadsuguda, and Sambalpur, are some of the most important railway stations of this region. Kolkata is also connected to Dhaka by rail and the train running between the two cities is called Maitree Express.

One might consider travelling by local trains which generally operate from Sealdah and Howrah stations. They serve as a quicker option of reaching suburban areas when compared to buses. However, one might come across huge number of passengers who are not always friendly in these trains. Generally, the trains are crowded while going towards Kolkata from 8AM to 11AM and from 4PM to 9PM while leaving Kolkata. That said, it sure is an experience to see the locals getting around and buy some snacks from the passing sellers.

By bus [ edit ]

All major cities and towns of Eastern India are well connected by roads and bus services are good. Each state has their own government-run bus services. Apart from this, there are private operators providing effective bus services all over the region. Bhubaneswar , Cuttack , Durgapur , Gangtok , Jamshedpur , Kolkata , Raipur , Ranchi and Siliguri are some of the major bus hubs in this region.

From North-Eastern India [ edit ]

Bus travel to some points in North-Eastern India is faster via Bangladesh (visas will be required for entry into Bangladesh as well as for re-entry into India). If you're heading to points in North-Eastern India (Tripura for example) beyond Bangladesh, then there is a regular bus service between Dhaka and Agartala , the capital of the Indian state of Tripura . Two BRTC buses leave daily from Dhaka and connect with the Tripura Road Transport Corporation vehicles, running six days a week with a roundtrip fare of 600 Bangladeshi takas. There is only one halt at Ashuganj in Bangladesh during the journey. Call ☏ +880 2 8360241 for schedule. Other entry points to North-Eastern India through Bangladesh are Hili , Chilahati / Haldibari and Banglaband border posts through Northern Bangladesh and Tamabil/Dawki border post for a route between Shillong ( Meghalaya ) and Sylhet in North-Eastern Bangladesh , and some others with lesser-known routes from north-eastern Indian regions. Although scheduled bus services to Shillong from Kolkata through Dhaka may not be available, you can get to those points via land routes going through Sylhet and then on to Tamabil–Dawki border outposts. Enquire at the Bus Service Counters for details.

Kolkata is famous for its cuisine. The signature food item however would be roshogolla ( rasgullah ). Sandesh is a close second which is also a sweet. Kolkata is famous for its street food culture and one can find innumerable shops dotting the streets with various food items. Rolls (somewhat like tacos), momos, chowmein, etc. are commonly sold items. As Kolkata is home to India's largest ethnic Chinese community, Bengalis have a liking towards Chinese food but that is not authentic Chinese. They are Indianised version of Chinese foods and different from what you would find in China.

Bengali cuisine typically consists of rice, dal, fish curry, chicken curry, mutton curry, prawns, shukto, dorma, etc.

It is said that a trip to Kolkata remains incomplete if you do not try the Kolkata-style biryani. It is a combination of scented rice with piece(s) of chicken or mutton with potato and sometimes egg. Mishti doi (sweetened yogurt) is the favourite dessert in that region. One may also try other sweet items like pantua , chamcham , chhanabara , chhanaar-jilapi and jalebi . Fuchka is another very popular street food which should be tried. Jhal muri is spiced puffed rice. Shingara (also called samosa), gutki, dalpuri, kochuri, various kinds of chops are some of the best snacks of the region.

Cuisines of Odisha and Jharkhand are very similar to that of Bengal. However, Odia cuisine, especially from the sea-side region use salt water fish which is very nicely prepared and a must have. Lithi is one snack which is a must if you are in Jharkhand.

Drink [ edit ]

This is a major tea-growing area, so take some time to have tea from a roadside shop.

In Sikkim, look for the mildly intoxicating tongba, a millet-brew.

Stay safe [ edit ]

Food-borne illness is a major concern in this area. Go to eateries that are busy.

Go next [ edit ]

  • It is popular to take a trip to Nepal in order to enjoy the Himalayan mountains. Trains to the border are available from Kolkata.

East India Travel Guide

Eastern Zone of India is rich in Cultural Heritage. You can have a taste of beaches, temples, monastries, buddhist circuit with a rural touch.

Most Popular tourist destinations for this region are, Calcutta, Former Captal of India, Puri & Bhubaneshwar, Buddhist Circuit in Bihar, Monastries in Sikkim, Kanchenjunga Range of Mountains in Darjeeling etc.

In no time at all the stimulating bustle and heat of Calcutta is left far behind, opening out to the cool and luscious mountains of refreshing Darjeeling. Encounter the mighty range of the Himalayas in Sikkim, the one-horned rhinoceros in wonderful wildlife reserves, then dream of a forgotten age in the ancient holy towns on the plains of rural India.

Discover the Soul of Calcutta Calcutta is the largest city in India, indeed one of the largest in the world. Established as a British trading post in the 17th century, the city rapidly grew, acquiring a life and vibrancy of its own. Its glory is still reflected in the buildings of Chowringhee and Clive Street, know as Jawaharlal Nehru Road and Netaji Subhash Road respectively. It is a city which leaves no-one indifferent-fascinating, effervescent, teeming with life, peoples, cultures. The impact can be a shock at first; the rickshaws, cars, brightly painted lorries, trolley buses, the cries of the street vendors, labourers hard at work on the construction of the vast underground railway, the noise and colour of the huge New Market, the bustle of the crowds...but soon the jumbled impressions will sort themselves out.

Discover the Spiritual Heart of the Subcontinent: An Unforgettable East India Tour Through Sacred Sites and Cultural Wonders

India’s array of cultures and diverse spiritual paths make it one of the most fascinating and rewarding destinations on the planet. Eastern India, less trodden by regular tourists, is a jewelry box of spiritual heritage and the cradle of Jainism (a profound belief system sprang to life nearly 3,000 years ago in the fertile plains of the Ganges). Buddhism also began here, under the sanctified Bodhi Tree in Bodh Gaya, in the 5th century BC.

Embark on a historical East India tour with Professor David Eckel and an intimate group of 13 fellow explorers, traversing the sacred and secluded sanctuaries in Eastern India’s heartlands. This East India tour offers an extraordinary journey, commencing in Bodh Gaya, the revered site of Buddha’s enlightenment, winding through Patna, home to relics of the Buddha’s legacy, and progressing to the illustrious city of Kolkata.

Our odyssey will unveil the architectural splendors of Bishnupur’s Laterite Hindu temples, the serene Buddhist Golden Triangle of the East, and the meticulously sculpted Jain caves of Udayagiri and Khandagiri.

This East India trip is an expedition into the spiritual epicenter of the subcontinent, enriched by visits to three UNESCO World Heritage Sites: the venerated Mahabodhi Temple in Bodh Gaya, the ancient Nalanda University, a beacon of Buddhist learning, and the majestic Konârak Temple, a homage to the Hindu Sun God Surya.

Join us on this unforgettable journey and enjoy the cultural and spiritual wonders of Eastern India.

Itinerary of the Eastern India Culture Trip

Day 1 depart for india.

Depart on your flight for India.

Day 2 Arrive in Delhi

Evening arrival into Delhi and overnight in the 5-star Pullmann Aerocity Hotel at Delhi’s International Airport.

Day 3 Flight to Gaya, drive to Bodh Gaya

Fly to Gaya, and drive to neighboring Bodh Gaya, considered one of the world’s most important Buddhist pilgrimage sites. Meet this evening for our gala welcome dinner party. Overnight for two nights in the 4-star Mahabodhi Resort. (B/ /D)

Day 4 Mahabodhi Tree and Temple and Buddha

We will spend the day in the vast Temple Complex in Bodh Gaya. Begin at the Bodhi Tree or “Tree of Awakening”, under which Prince Siddhartha Gautama, the spiritual teacher later known as the Buddha, is said to have attained enlightenment in the sixth century BC. This enormous ficus is a direct descendant of the original specimen planted in the third century BC. About 200 years after the time of the Buddha, the Emperor Ashoka constructed the Mahabodhi Temple. Over the centuries, it has been rebuilt repeatedly and is now part of a large monastery complex. This impressive temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is one of the oldest brick structures in eastern India. Also within the complex is a gigantic, 65-foot tall statue of the Buddha built in 1989 for the Dali Lama. (B/L/D).

Day 5 Venu van, Son Bhandar, Griddhakuta (Vulture Peak), World Peace Pagoda

Our two-hour drive takes us from Bodh Gaya to Rajgir, famous for its hot water springs, and a sacred place for both Hindus and Buddhists. Within the environs are many sites to visit. In the 4th century BC, the Buddha’s friend and protector, King Bimbisar, offered the bamboo grove or Venu Van to be used for meditation. Inscriptions found inside one of the cave contends that the nearby Son Bhandar Caves were carved out of a cliff face in the 3rd or 4th century by a Jain wise man as a dwelling for Jain ascetics. The interiors of the dual chambers were polished and ornamented with sculptures. Holes meant to support beams seen above the cave entrance suggest that the cave once had a second story and a wooden verandah. The Vulture Peak, a small mountain just outside the city, is said to be the site where the Buddha revealed the Mahayana. Near the Vulture Peak is the Rajgir Vishwa Shanti Stupa or World Peace Pagoda, completed in 1969. Another UNESCO World Heritage Site, Nalanda was an ancient university and Buddhist monastic center from the 5th to the 12th centuries. At its height, scholars from as far away as Tibet, China, Korea, and Southeast Asia traveled here to study. After our explorations, continue to Patna, an ancient city that sprawls along the south bank of the Ganges River. Overnight in the 5-star Hotel Lemon Tree Premier. (B/L/D)

Day 6 Bihar Museum, Flight to Kolkata

Patna is the state capital, and home to Bihar Museum, a contemporary landmark exhibiting bronze sculptures and old coins from the region. We will enter to view artifacts from nearby sites, along with textiles, paintings, bronze images and sculptures and terra cotta images by Hindu and Buddhist artists. Also housed here is a collection of rare British-era paintings depicting day-to-day life. After spending the morning within the museum, go to the airport for an afternoon flight to Kolkata and overnight for two nights in the 5-star Oberoi Grand Hotel. Dinner is on our own. (B/L)

Day 7 Kolkata: Dalhousie Square, flower market, Howrah Bridge, St. Paul's Cathedral, Victoria Memorial

Today is a Kolkata day! Begin in Dalhousie Square, the location of St. John’s church, High Court, General Post Office (GPO), Town Hall, and other important British colonial buildings. Then stop by the Mallik Ghat. The unique perfumes of vivid marigold, clusters of sacred lotus, vibrant roses, and bright yellow sunflowers await as we walk through the largest flower market, not only in India, but also in Asia. Nearby, see Howrah Bridge, the sixth longest cantilevered bridge in the world, spanning the Hooghly River. Stunning St. Paul’s Cathedral, completed in 1847 and the seat of the Anglican Diocese of Kolkata, is noted for its Gothic architectural style, “Indo-Gothic”, a mixture of Islamic and European features. We will see the impressive, gleaming white marble Victoria Memorial, dedicated to the British queen, and The Mother House of the Missionaries of Charity, the former home of Mother Teresa, one of the most celebrated and revered women in Indian History; her tomb is within the grounds. (B/L/D)

Day 8 Transfer to Tarakeswar, Baba Taraknath Temple, Continue to Bishnupaur

Drive from Kolkata to Tarakeswar to see Baba Taraknath Temple. The sanctuary is a major pilgrimage spot, and the interior holds the Shayambhu Linga, a non-figurative representation of the Hindu god Shiva. Within the complex are other shrines dedicated to the Hindu goddess Kali and Lord Lakshmi-Narayan, a manifestation of Vishnu. Continue to Bishnupur and the Annapurna Hotel, our home for two nights. (B/L/D)

Day 9 Bisnupur Temples: Radhamadhab, Kalachand, Radhagovinda, Nandalal, Rash Mancha, and Jor Bangla

Bishnupur is an ancient city that was the capital of the Malla dynasty for almost a thousand years. Today it is renowned for clay crafts, Baluchari sarees, and ornately decorated medieval Hindu temples. By walking and cycle rickshaw, we will explore Bishnupur’s glorious past reflected in its splendid architecture. Magnificent Jor Bangla Temple, lavishly bedecked with terracotta tiles revealing contemporary life in the 17th century, portrays the slanted roofs of traditional thatched huts. Built of brick with both exterior and interior walls adorned with terracotta tablets, Madan Mohan is a Bengali ‘chala’ style Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Krishna. 17th century Rasmancha, one of the oldest brick temples in India, is unique in design. Standing on a raised platform of laterite blocks, forty pillars support a pyramid-shaped roof that cover the three interior rooms adorned with carved lotus flowers. Funded by a Malla Queen in 1737, Radha Madhab Temple is an example of the Ek Ratna architectural style. This beautiful building has a sloped roof below the single tower with two outside walls decorated with scenes from the Ramayana and other mythological stories. (B/L/D)

Day 10 Panchumura Craft Village, Flight to Bhubaneswar

Depart Bishnupur and drive to Panchmura craft village where, for 300 years, families have created hand-made clay collectibles. The villagers offer a wide range of terracotta products from animal to human figurines but they are renowned for their huge clay horses. Continue to Kolkata to board an afternoon flight to Bhubaneswar, called the ‘temple city’ with its multitude of sanctuaries in the old city and the nearby countryside. Our home for three nights is the 5-star Mayfair Lagoon Hotel in Bhubaneswar, a luxury resort overlooking a lush lagoon. Be sure and make reservations for a sumptuous experience in the spa! Dinner is on our own. (B/L)

Day 11 Odisha’s Buddhist Triangle of Lalitgiri, Ratnagiri and Udayagir

Today’s all day excursion takes us into the nearby Assia Hills to discover Odisha’s Buddhist Triangle of Lalitgiri, Ratnagiri and Udayagiri, hidden well off the beaten tourist trail. Dating back to the 1st century CE, Lalitgiri is the oldest Buddhist site in Odisha. Excavations have unearthed remnants of a stupa complex, and two stone caskets were found containing bone relics, believed by some to be of the Buddha or one of his important followers. Ratnagiri was home to a 5th century Buddha monastery, or mahavihara. Elaborately decorated with doorways and pillars of contrasting colors of green and purple shades, each of the three brick structures enclose a central paved courtyard with monastic cells. During archaeological research, two dozen colossal Buddha heads were unearthed, and one of the shrines is still home to a 12-foot-tall sculpture of the Buddha. The sanctuary of Udayagiri spreads across two hills and is the largest Buddhist complex in Odisha. The walls of one of the many stupas is adorned with niches containing multiple representations of the Buddha. (B/L/D)

Day 12 Rani Gumpha, Khandagiri Cave, Lingaraj Temple, Mukteswar Temple

This morning’s drive takes us to see ancient rock-cut caves that, as early as in the 1st century BC, were shelters for Jain monks. The largest at Udayagiri, Rani Gumpha, is two stories, elaborately embellished with intricately carved images. The friezes on the upper floor depict the victory march of a king. Nearby Khandagiri Cave is also abundantly bedecked with reliefs of deities and charming scenes from everyday life. We then return to the old city of Bhubaneswar to visit two holy places. Several times a day, the lingam at Lingaraj Temple is washed and decorated with flowers and sandal paste and, with luck we will see one of the ceremonies. With lattice designs and refined carvings, Mukteswar Temple is certainly an architectural gem. A highlight here is the wonderful decorative gateway with twin columns supporting a semi-circular arch that blends Hindu and Buddhist characteristics. We will stop at the Museum of Tribal Arts & Artefacts to view displays of traditional dress, silver and bead jewelry, elaborate headdresses, weaponry, and other artifacts representing the more than 60 tribal groups in the region. Our final stop will be at the Dance Academy School to enjoy a presentation of Odissi Dance, one of the classical dance forms of India. (B/L/D)

Day 13 Transfer to Puri, Konârak Sun Temple

Depart this morning for Puri where we will visit the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Konârak . Dedicated to the Hindu Sun God, Surya, the creator of the universe and the source of all life, the fabulous 13th-century Hindu temple has twelve pairs of gigantic stone wheels on the sides of the structure transforming the entire temple into the chariot of Surya. The figures of horses on the front and on each side of the staircase further enhance this allusion. The elegant structure is exquisitely bejeweled with stone carvings. Overnight for two nights in the 4-star Mayfair Heritage Hotel in Puri, with gorgeous ocean views. (B/L/D)

Day 14 Jaganath Temple, Raghurajpur Heritage Village

Begin the day at Jaganath Temple, a massive temple complex dedicated to Lord Jagannath, a form of Vishnu, and an important pilgrimage site. Only Hindus are allowed inside but we will be able to view the spectacular architecture from the outside. Then we move on to Raghurajpur, declared a ‘heritage village’ in 2000 by the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH). Although other traditional art forms are created here, the village is known for its Pattachitra artists. Painted on cloth and depicting scenes of myths and folktales, this art form dates back several centuries. The ancient  Gotipua  tradition has survived in this small village and we will have an opportunity to learn about this dance performed by young boys who dress as female to praise of Lord Krishna. The carved dancers on the bas-reliefs on the Sun Temple in Konârak are evidence that this is a very old tradition. (B/L/D)

Day 15 Puri to Bhubaneswar to Delhi

Depart Puri this morning to fly to Bhubaneswar airport where we will board a mid-day flight to Delhi. Upon arrival, we will join together for our final lunch and then have time to rest before our flights home. Overnight in the Pullmann Aerocity Hotel at the Delhi Airport. In the late evening, board our planes for the return flights. (B/L)

Day 16 Arrive home

Arrive home.

We have designed this trip to be as comfortable as possible, while also aiming to visit some remote or unique sites that other companies do not attempt to include in their itineraries. There may be days where we have very long drives and the conditions of the roads may vary. Hotels and transportation in some remote areas may not be up to western standards. There may be times when no bellhops are available; please pack with the understanding that you need to be able to handle your own luggage at times. At times we may be walking over uneven trails for a mile or more; hiking boots are strongly recommended. Not every meal will not be haute cuisine and several lunches may be picnics or box lunches. Your flexibility and patience will be appreciated.

Itinerary Changes

Changes in our itinerary, accommodations, and transportation schedules may occur. While we are committed to keeping as close to the published details as possible, sometimes it is simply not possible. Weather events, government affairs, or other factors out of our control sometimes come into play. A good book to read as well as patience, flexible attitude, and a sense of humor are essential.

Highlights of the Seven Sisters: why Northeast India is the place to travel right now

Oct 10, 2019 • 9 min read

eastern india trip

Of the countless pictures you’ve seen and travel tales you’ve heard of India , it’s unlikely many – if any – focused on its remote Northeast States . This triangular-shaped piece of land is wedged between China, Bangladesh, Bhutan and Myanmar, and consists of seven states, known collectively as the Seven Sisters. Long neglected by even the most intrepid of travellers because of their notoriously troubled past, the Sisters have slowly come of age, and may soon grow into India’s most sought-after travel destination.

A fisherman, carrying a large net over his shoulder, wades into a river in Assam, with the low sun bathing the scene in an orange hue

Home to a kaleidoscope of cultures, religions and ethnicities, the region has endured a turbulent history (think tribal warfare, independence struggles and cross-border smuggling). However, much of the outright conflict has subsided – apart from the occasional peaceful protest – and, as a result, the Indian Government has recently relaxed most of the travel restrictions and permit requirements for foreigners, meaning the region’s pristine nature, diverse landscapes and unique tribal cultures are open to the world for the first time.

From Himalayan monasteries to rhino-filled national parks, here are seven of the highlights of India’s Northeast – just make sure you see them before everyone else does.

Aerial view of Loktak Lake, showing its green islands of vegetation which float on the lake's surface. The lake is backed by mountains in the distance.

Loktak Lake, Manipur

Manipur was considered the most dangerous of the seven states as its fierce independence movement and forested hills favoured by smugglers prolonged the region’s instability. However, the locals will repeatedly assure you those days are long gone, and foreigners are welcomed with eager hospitality.

Loktak Lake, one of the largest inland bodies of water in India, is one of the most memorable highlights of the Northeast States. Just an hour from Manipur’s capital, Imphal, the landform is known as the ‘floating lake’ due to the presence of phumdis , large masses of vegetation that float on the lake’s surface. One of these buoyant islands is so big it’s been granted national park status, set up to protect the endangered sangai deer, which at one time was thought to be extinct. The park has a couple of viewing platforms where rangers will help you locate the deer through binoculars. Alternatively, it’s possible to spend time out on the water in wooden boats with local fishermen (many of whom live on the phumdis), who can provide insights into traditional fishing methods and details about the lake’s 100 species of birds.

It’s possible to stay in a village homestay on the lake run by the local ecotourism committee. Alternatively, there are also accommodation options in Moirang, the largest nearby town.

The top of a mountain is filled with countless white buildings with gold roofs, all part of the Tawang monastery.

Tawang, Arunachal Pradesh

Arunachal Pradesh is the last frontier and eastern most state of India, sharing borders with Tibet, Bhutan and Myanmar. It’s the most precarious of the Seven Sisters, due to the heavily militarised nature of the area and the ongoing border dispute between China and India. For this reason, it’s one of only two states in the region – the other being Sikkim – where a Protected Area Permit is still required for foreigners. However, it can be easily arranged in Guwahati or Kolkata from government offices.

Arunachal is characterised by an impressive mountainous region that rises to the Greater Himalayas. Tucked inside these snow-capped peaks between Bhutan and Tibet , is the town of Tawang. This little-visited spot is home to the second largest Buddhist monastery in the world, spectacularly set on the edge of a slope at 3000m elevation. The monastery dates back to around the mid-17th century and is where the sixth Dalai Lama was born. It’s now home to around 300 monks and a treasure trove of Tibetan Buddhist relics, including rare manuscripts and thangka cotton paintings.

The real highlight, aside from the incredible scenery surrounding the monastery, is to spend time mulling around the peaceful, white-washed grounds, which are most atmospheric at sunrise when the monks perform their morning prayers, or puja , to the sound of beating drums.

A group of people from Assam perform a traditional dance show wearing colourful masks and outfits resembling Hindu deities.

Majuli Island, Assam

Assam is the largest state in the region and perhaps the most well-known thanks to its production of its namesake tea. It’s lesser-known tourism marvel is Majuli, the world’s largest river island marooned in the mighty Brahmaputra River.

The island is home to some of the most important temples and satras (cultural centres) of the neo-Vaishnavite sect of Hinduism, which is native to Assam. More than just complexes for prayer, they are also used for traditional performing arts that includes elaborate and colourful masks which are handmade on the island. Majuli once had 65 of these satras, however, due to the slow erosion and seasonal flooding of the Brahmaputra River, the number has been reduced to just 22.

The large landmass is also home to the Mishing tribe, an indigenous community with roots in Mongolia who migrated to India in the 16th century. Their houses sitting high on stilts are traditionally made from bamboo and thatch, almost blending into the thick vegetation found on rural parts of the island. The community are extremely affable – don’t be surprised to find yourself being invited into a stilt-house for tea.

Profile shot of a former headhunter from the Konyak tribe in Nagaland. The man's face is darkened by tattoo ink and he has two large black tusks piercing either ear.

Konyak villages, Nagaland

The Seven Sisters are often referred to as tribal states, and, in this context, Nagaland is the region’s poster child. The Nagas is the collective term for around 20 tribes, but each has its own traditions and customs and occupies a different area of land. The largest of these tribes is the Konyaks, mostly situated in the north of the state, around the town of Mon.

The Konyaks are unique for their headhunting traditions. Not so long ago, territorial disputes in the area that is now the India-Myanmar border culminated in the practice of decapitating enemies and displaying their heads as trophies on door frames. These ruthless days are a thing of the past, but remnants of this time endure, most notably in the form of body art; ex-warriors – now in their twilight years – can still be distinguished by their tattooed faces and chests, a decorative practice used to honour their achievements in battle.

Although there are a couple of hotels in Mon where you can base yourself for village visits, a more immersive experience is to opt for a homestay with a Konyak family. The village of Longwa has a number of such accommodation options available, with hosts often doubling as guides. Staying in the village itself not only gives you more of a chance to meet some of the former headhunters, but also provides a window into everyday village life, as well as the opportunity to sample some memorable home-cooked meals, like smoked beef heart served with local red rice.

The Neermahal palace complex: the palace is on a small island, and, in this shot, almost appears to be floating on the water. The large complex is made from sandstone and marble, with two big white domes visible.

Neermahal, Tripura

One of the smallest and least visited states in the country, Tripura is bordered on three sides by Bangladesh and to the north with Assam. Though it remains a relatively isolated state, it is connected to the country’s national railway network – a rare feature in the Northeast States.

The state’s most picturesque attraction is Neermahal , which literally translates to water palace. The former royal fortress was built in the 1930s in the middle of the lake by the Maharaja of Tripura and is considered a unique blend of Muslim and Hindu architectural design. To reach it you need to take a wooden boat from the small dock, which is walking distance from the town of Melaghar.

The palace appears like something you might find on the opposite side of the country in Rajasthan , except the pure joy of visiting Neermahal is that you will likely have the place all to yourself. Although the rooms are mostly empty now, you are free to roam around the complex and admire the view of the lake from various vantage points. The palace is particularly striking at sunset, when the marble domes are splashed in a golden hue.

An aerial view of the city of Gangtok in Sikkim, which is located on a hilltop and surrounded by verdant forest.

Gangtok, Sikkim

Sikkim is a former mountain kingdom, bordered by Bhutan, Tibet and Nepal , and features some of India’s most impressive mountains vistas and trekking opportunities. It’s the least populated state in the country and one-third of its area is covered by the Kanchenjunga National Park to the north.

And for all this natural splendour, it is Sikkim’s urban charms that steals the show. The state’s capital, Gangtok , is one of India’s most laid-back cities and is a joy to explore. The majority of the population have origins in Nepal and Tibet, and you will find typical Himalayan delights such as momos (dumplings), thukpa (noodle soup), yak wool shawls and thangka paintings in the open-air market in the city centre. You can explore Gangtok’s Buddhist culture further by visiting some of the city’s nearby monasteries such as Rumtek, which is the largest in Sikkim.

The state is extremely mountainous and the sprawl of Gangtok laps against the slopes of the surrounding hills. There are a few lookout points around town, the best of which is considered to be Tashi Viewpoint, where you can gaze at the impressive mountain backdrop of the city which, on a clear day, extends all the way to Kanchenjunga, the world’s third-highest mountain.

A rhino grazes on grassland in Kaziranga National Park. In the background a lake and forest is visible.

Kaziranga National Park, Assam

The Seven Sisters are known for their vast natural landscapes, and the forest and floodplains of the Karizanga National Park are considered – remarkably – to be one of the last areas on the Indian subcontinent that is undisturbed by human settlement. Its place as a wildlife haven has been recognised for over a century, which has allowed tigers, elephants and one-horned rhinoceroses to flourish amongst the wetlands of the Brahmaputra River. It’s home to two-thirds of the world’s population of rhinos and sighting them grazing in the grass is highly likely, even on a short visit.

As with the more famed national parks in India, a jeep safari is the most common way to explore the park. The reserve is divided into five sections, with the well-maintained tracks of Kohora being the most popular and busy. Agoratoli is perhaps the best alternative, with much less traffic while retaining a high chance of animal sightings.

Some of the most famous photos of the park are of tourists on elephant-back safaris. Although the creatures are reputedly well cared for by rangers, in the interest of animal welfare it is highly recommended to explore the park on four wheels instead. There are numerous lodges ranging from high end resorts to budget camps on the outskirts of the park, which can arrange half-day safaris from their doorstep.

A single road winds its way up a steep mountain in Sikkim. With more mountains visible in the distance.

Getting around

The remoteness and somewhat isolation of the Northeast region of India does pose certain barriers to those wishing to explore its far corners. Tourist and transport infrastructure is fairly limited and often, not in great shape. However, there are significant improvements planned for the future, which will only make travel easier.

The capital of Assam, Guwahati , is the region’s major transport hub and you’ll likely find yourself revisiting multiple times for connections between places. For now, it’s home to the region’s only international airport and it’s connected by flight directly to seven countries, all of which are in Asia. Guwahati also has the region’s main interstate railway station with services to most other major cities in Northern India.

Besides Tripura and Assam, the rest of the Seven Sisters do not have an existing rail network and must be explored by either state government buses or private and shared jeeps. This can pose some obstacles to travel plans as the mountainous region and poor road conditions, particularly in Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland, make travelling between places long and arduous. However, jeeps are abundant, relatively well organised and will go virtually anywhere, so with some time and patience the rewards are boundless.

Asian Rhino - Kaziranga National Park in Assam, India

Inspiring green journeys to North East India

Thrown across the farthest reaches of India, obscured from the greater world by ageless forests and formidable mountain ranges, the Northeast States are one of Asia’s last great natural and anthropological sanctuaries. Sharing borders with Bhutan, Tibet, Nepal, Myanmar (Burma) and Bangladesh, these remote frontiers are a region of rugged beauty and a collision zone of ancient tribal cultures, rich wildlife, untouched landscapes and original peoples.

Endless freedom

The Northeast is divided between the fertile Brahmaputra plain, dry or wet jungles, high plateaus and Himalayan foothills. Outdoor activities such as trekking, rafting, kayaking and mountain biking are still pioneering here. Essentially naturalistic, rich in varied discoveries, unusual encounters and anthropological experiences, taking place in magnificent, often unspoilt landscapes. This Eastern Himalayas, formerly known as the “Indo-Burmese”, has been identified, along with Bhutan and southern Nepal, as a global biodiversity hotspot. Endowed with numerous national parks (2 of which are recognized by UNESCO) and wildlife sanctuaries, Northeast India is a paradise for nature and wildlife lovers.

What people says about our Services

Image is not available

Eastern Route organized my travel in Northeast India. Choices of places to visit, accommodation and driver were very good. I received a warm welcome from him and he really cared about my happiness and my satisfaction. I also feel that he knows this area of India very well, and that gives me the desire to come back and discover this area with his experience.

I can testify that the services of this young but seasoned outfitter are not only professionally top-notch, but mostly wise and eco-friendly: the staff and the owner/manager act in all situations with high standards of ethics, respect of the local communities and values, constant care of the environment or how to alleviate our impact, attention to detail and altogether the sincere love of the job well done. In particular, I recall the experiences of in-depth immersion within local homes and tribal villages of Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Meghalaya and Assam: each time, when we parted, our hosts and ourselves were filled with the same sense of rich moments shared together, and a better understanding of our common humanity, which, for real travellers, rank as invaluable treasures.

If you're looking for a true adventure in one of the most exciting and untouched parts of India then get in touch with Laurige at Eastern Routes. Although i'm quite well travelled in some remote parts of the world, nothing prepared me for the remoteness and sheer experience of trekking in the upper Konyak region of Nagaland. The natural beauty, sense of adventure and overwhelming kindness and hospitality of these once feared headhunters resulted in probably the trip of my lifetime to date. This was down to Laurige's meticulous research, solid grasp of Hindi (he's French) and warm character that was able to open doors for us as we went along on our journey. if you're a seasoned traveller and are looking for a new frontier, look no further the NE India, a place we seldom notice, yet is full of secrets and surprises beyond our imaginations. After years of explorations, Eastern Routes have got the region covered with some fantastic tours and adventures .10/10.

We traveled twice with Eastern Routes, once in Meghalaya in 2017 and in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh in 2018. We highly recommend their services, they are very professional, have a real expertise on North-East, and offer unique trips to remote places off the most traveled routes. We will definitely travel with Laurige and his team again! Looking forward our next trip with Eastern Routes 🙂

After travelling a little bit everywhere in India, came to us the idea of visiting two states : Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland. We asked Eastern Routes to organize our 12-days holidays from a program we made (Driver and hotel bookings). The main highlight was the good English of the driver, a big part of the trip success.

See the 2024 Solar Eclipse’s Path of Totality

A total solar eclipse is expected to pass through the United States on April 8, 2024, giving stargazers across the country the opportunity to view the celestial phenomenon in which the sun is completely covered by the moon.

The eclipse will enter the U.S. in Texas and exit in Maine. It is the last time a total solar eclipse will be visible in the contiguous United States until 2044.

Here's what to know about the path of the eclipse and where you can see it.

Read More : How Animals and Nature React to an Eclipse

Where can you see the total solar eclipse?

The eclipse will cross through North America, passing over parts of Mexico, the United States, and Canada.

The eclipse will enter the United States in Texas, and travel through Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine. Small parts of Tennessee and Michigan will also experience the total solar eclipse.

Much of the eclipse's visibility depends on the weather. A cloudy day could prevent visitors from seeing the spectacle altogether.

When does the solar eclipse start and end?

The solar eclipse will begin in Mexico’s Pacific coast at around 11:07 a.m. PDT. It will exit continental North America on the Atlantic coast of Newfoundland, Canada, at 5:16 p.m. NDT.

The longest duration of totality—which is when the moon completely covers the sun — will be 4 minutes, 28 seconds, near Torreón, Mexico. Most places along the path of totality will see a totality duration between 3.5 and 4 minutes.

Total solar eclipse April 8, 2024 facts: Path, time and the best places to view

In the U.S., 31 million people already live inside the path of totality.

Scroll down to see the list of U.S. cities where the April 8 total solar eclipse will be visible, the duration of the eclipse in those locations and what time totality will begin, according to GreatAmericanEclipse.com .

"Eclipse Across America," will air live Monday, April 8, beginning at 2 p.m. ET on ABC, ABC News Live, National Geographic Channel, Nat Geo WILD, Disney+ and Hulu as well as network social media platforms.

On April 8, 2024, a historic total solar eclipse will cast a shadow over parts of the United States, prompting a mass travel event to the path of totality -- from Texas to Maine and several states and cities in between.

A total solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes between the sun and the Earth and, for a short time, completely blocks the face of the sun, according to NASA .

The track of the moon's shadow across Earth's surface is called the path of totality, and to witness the April 8 total solar eclipse, viewers must be within the 115-mile-wide path. To discover when to see the solar eclipse in totality or the partial eclipse in locations across the U.S. outside of the path, check out NASA's Eclipse Explorer tool .

In the U.S., 31 million people already live inside the path of totality, bringing the celestial phenomenon to their doorsteps, Michael Zeiler, expert solar eclipse cartographer at GreatAmericanEclipse.com told ABC News.

But for individuals outside of the path, investing time and money are needed to experience the event in totality.

Eclipse chasers, or umbraphiles, are individuals who will do almost anything, and travel almost anywhere, to see totality, according to the American Astronomical Society .

"There's a very active community of solar eclipse chasers and we will go to any reasonable lengths to see solar eclipses anywhere in the world," Zeiler said. "All of us are united in pursuing the unimaginable beauty of a total solar eclipse."

Bringing together both eclipse experts and novice sky watchers, the total solar eclipse on April 8 is projected to be the U.S.'s largest mass travel event in 2024, according to Zeiler, who likened it to "50 simultaneous Super Bowls across the nation."

"When you look at the number of people expected to come to the path of totality for the solar eclipse, we estimate those numbers are roughly the equivalent of 50 simultaneous Super Bowls across the nation, from Texas to Maine," he said.

Hi Lindon H

Welcome to Bangladesh! A land of 170 million smiling people!

As per the immigration office terms & conditions, the available process is you can take an Indian cab taxi from Tripura with driver which will drop off you to the Agartola - Akhaura (India - Bangladesh) border.

The Indian name plate taxi will not get permission to run Bangladesh road. But, very rarely, if you take necessary permission from Bangladesh Embassy in Tripura for this reason, perhaps you can do that.

Similarly, you can take a yellow cab taxi from Dhaka, which will drop off to the Benapole border of Bangladesh, then you need to complete the immigration process, cross the border and higher an Indian taxi which will drop off to you at Kolkata New Market .

For any kind of question, feel free to ask me in here.

Have a safe and nice trip in Bangladesh!

Saimoon Islam (Ontu)

Thankyou, I shall conract the embassy

Dear Lindon H

You are cordially welcome anytime for any information.

Hope for the best to you for your upcoming trip in Bangladesh.

Saimoon Islam (Ontu).
