El Orquidario, the Orchid House in Estepona, is a striking presence in the middle of Estapona’s historical center along the Calle Terraza and one of the best things to do in Estepona (one of the BEST cities in Southern Spain to visit).

The building itself is a surprising piece of modern architecture surrounded by the town’s typical apartment blocks, making for an interesting juxtaposition between old and new.

Curvaceous and sporting a glass ceiling made up of three domes – the highest reaching 30m high, the lowest 6m – it is home to a 17m high waterfall, 5000 plants and 1.300 species of orchids from all over the world. There’s also a vertical garden!

If you’re looking to head further out, towards the port, the mountains, or the Selwo Aventura area, you can do so by bus or car. A taxi to Sonora Beach in Selwo will cost you around €18.

Estepona, located just over an hour from my hometown, Malaga, is one of my favourite coastal towns.

You can do anything from strolling the most beautiful old town in the province of Malaga and admiring the unique street art and statues to soaking up the sun at the beach and doing water sports like paddle surfing and kayaking.

Casco histórico de Estepona is considered the best old town in Costa del Sol . You can spend hours wandering around and taking photos of the many picturesque streets, each one decorated with pots of different colours and bright flowers.

There are two ways you can explore it. The first one is by following your intuition and getting lost in the many streets. The second is by scanning the QR code to get the old town map in the tourism office and following their recommended route to see all the pretty streets.

I really enjoy looking for beautiful streets on my own as I find it more exciting, but if you don’t have much time, you might want to consider taking the route, so you can ensure you see them all.

2. Check out Ruinas del Castillo de San Luis

The remains of the Castle of San Luis confirm the Medieval past of Estepona. The castle dates back to the 16th century, and its aim was to defend and protect the residents of the town, who built houses around the castle and kept it almost hidden for years.

The castle was destroyed by French troops in 1810, so nowadays, you can only see the remains of the tower and a wall. However, I’m always amazed by finding historical spots like this one that tell a story about the previous generations.

El Orquidario de Estepona is one of the best things to see in Estepona.

Estepona Orchid House makes you feel like you’re in the jungle. It’s home to a great variety of plants and trees from around the world, including Southeast Asia and America.

The bird chirping and the waterfall sounds are very peaceful and relaxing. Wander around this botanic garden, take photos and learn about the different plants and orchids, as there are about 1300 orchid species.

Entry to the Orchid House is 3 euros per adult and 1 euro per child.

4. Spot street art around Estepona

If you love street art, you’ll be surprised by all the incredible pieces of art you can find across the city. In fact, there is even an art route to see them all.

There are 60 incredible paintings for you to discover, and although some of them are close to each other, it can be difficult to see them all if you’re spending only a few hours in Estepona.

The most impressive, at least to me, is called “Día de Pesca” by José Fernández Ríos. It consists of a fisherman catching what looks like a sardine or anchovy. This painting is divided into three different buildings and six facades.

Another two art walls you shouldn’t miss are Regando el Jardín (Watering the Garden) and La Última Cena (The Last Dinner).

5. Have a coffee in Plaza Doctor Arce

This beautiful small square is an excellent place to enjoy a coffee or meal on an outdoor terrace. There is a fountain with a statue in the middle which is surrounded by a few coffee shops and restaurants.

MaduBar is one of the best places to eat in this area. It offers traditional and Mediterranean dishes while providing a cosy and beautiful atmosphere. Some of its popular lunch dishes include Gambas al Pil Pil and Kofta Kebab.

However, if you want breakfast and lunch, they also have great choices, including vegetarian dishes.

If you’re looking for cheap eats, La Italiana has breakfast dishes as well as a good selection of ice cream and cakes. I actually had a ham sandwich and orange juice in there, and they were good.

6. Take a photo of the picturesque Plaza de las Flores

Plaza de las Flores (Flower Square) is one of the liveliest squares in the old town of Estepona. As its name suggests, the square is surrounded by beautiful red, pink and white flowers and trees, including orange trees that leave a good aroma, and it has a marbled fountain in the middle.

This is a popular spot to enjoy a meal as restaurants and cafes set up tables around the square.

7. Admire art at Casa de las Tejerinas

Situated in Plaza de las Flores de Estepona, inside the tourism office, you can find Casa de las Tejerinas, a lovely building used for cultural purposes.

It has a beautiful patio and a second floor with stained glass, and a couple of rooms where paintings and pictures from local artists are often displayed. I didn’t know you could find artwork in this building!

Entry to Casa de las Tejerinas is free.

8. Do the sculpture route

Another popular route to take in Estepona is the sculpture route, which consists of 32 statues commemorating important people and events in Estepona and Spain. All these statues are spread across the town – from the historic centre to its surroundings.

With over 30 sculptures, you might not be able to see them all in a day, so if you want to see the most accessible ones in the centre, don’t miss the following ones:

Padre Manuel . Located next to Nuestra Señora de los Remedios Church.
Monumento a la Peseta . Located on the beach promenade, close to the tourism office.
Mujer Pensativa . Located on Plaza Ortiz.
Milagros . Located on Plaza Blas Infante.

9. Do the poetry route

If you love poetry, add this route to your Estepona itinerary. During this walking route, you can find 40 poems by important Spanish writers, such as Antonio Machado and Juan Ramón Jiménez, and international writers like William Shakespeare.

Many of these poems are engraved on tiles in the historic centre, but there are a few spread across other parts of Estepona.

10. Go inside Parroquia Nuestra Señora de los Remedios

Nuestra Señora de los Remedios is a Catholic church located in San Francisco Square. It’s the most important and beautiful church in Estepona, which many locals frequent every Sunday.

Its white and gold coloured facade and tower are impressive, but its interior is too. Inside the church, you can see numerous religious statues of Jesus and Mary, among others. During the months of December and the beginning of January, the church sets up a lovely nativity scene.

Next to the church, you’ll find the statue of Padre Manuel, who used to be a very important priest in Nuestra Señora de los Remedios Church.

If you happen to be in Estepona on the 15th of August, you can see a religious procession which goes through the old town of Estepona.

11. Admire Casa Siglo XVIII

Casa Siglo XVIII is a hidden gem in the historic centre of Estepona. This building, located on Mondéjar Street, was an important building in the past, and what makes it unique is the paintings surrounding the frame of the door to access the balcony.

This valuable painting was restored in 2019 and consists of two columns on the two sides of the door and other decorative elements.

Look up because it’s very easy to miss this spot; I found myself checking Google Maps a couple of times.

12. Find Torre del Reloj

Situated in Plaza del Reloj, you’ll find this beautiful beige and pink sand colour tower which belonged to Iglesia de Los Remedios, a former church built in the 16th century.

This square, named after the tower, is where celebrations and concerts occur. Otherwise, it’s a very tranquil place.

You can celebrate the New Year in this square if you’re around Estepona during the festive season.

13. Go for a walk on the beach promenade

One of the best things to do in Estepona on a sunny day is to walk on its beach promenade. The wide path, scenic sea views and sculptures make it a fantastic walk.

You can stop by restaurants or chiringuitos (beach bars) along the promenade to sip a cocktail or have delicious fresh fish.

It’s a meeting point for tourists and locals, especially on a sunny day in winter. When I visited Estepona recently, I saw there was a giant chessboard with pieces to play with. It was nice to see families and friends playing a chess game.

14. Soak up the sun at Playa de la Rada

Estepona enjoys an average of 320 days of sun, warm summers and mild winters, which makes it a perfect place to visit any time of the year.

Going to La Rada Beach isn’t only a summer activity, and it isn’t a surprise to see many tourists sunbathing with temperatures of 20 degrees Celsius (68°F) in the winter months.

This 2-kilometre sandy beach in Estepona is the most visited by locals and tourists due to its central location.

It’s perfect for everyone as it’s accessible, the water is calm, and it has good facilities like public toilets and showers, and it’s surrounded by many beach restaurants where you can enjoy traditional fish dishes like espeto de sardinas (sardine skewers).

Another reason I love this beach is its views; you can see the Strait of Gibraltar on clear days.

15. Do water sports

Whether you love kayaking or want to hire a pedal boat, you can find plenty of water activities to do in Estepona.

El Saladillo Beach, one of the longest beaches in Estepona, is the best beach to practice any aquatic sports. There are companies that offer paddle surfing, wakeboarding and kayaking.

Scuba diving is another option, and a few schools teach you how to scuba dive and provide you with certification.

16. Go to Puerto Deportivo de Estepona

A 25-minute walk from the historic centre, you’ll find Estepona Marina. It’s a lovely spot to leisurely walk on a sunny day or stop by one of the cafes to have a drink and a quick bite.

Here you can also see Estepona Lighthouse, called Faro de Punta Doncella in Spanish, and go on a catamaran cruise.

Actually, Estepona is a popular spot for dolphin watching, so if it’s an activity that has been on your list for a while, check out this dolphin tour .

17. Taste the local fish and seafood

If you’re looking for a good restaurant to try the local fish and seafood, go to Restaurante La Escollera near Estepona Port. Enjoy a wide selection of fish dishes – from traditional fried fish to seabass and sardine skewers.

Another good place to eat to add to your list is Restaurante El Palangre .

18. Spend half-day at Playa del Cristo

Alongside the port of Estepona, Playa del Cristo is a peaceful dark sand beach perfect for families. The beach has a playground area as well as shadow places to keep you away from the sun when it’s strong.

Playa del Cristo is accessible, has parking, and there are two beach restaurants where you can grab some traditional food.

19. Visit Museo Arqueológico de Estepona

The Archaeological Museum of Estepona is a must-see for anyone who loves museums. Located in Casa del Aljibe, a beautiful 18th-century building from the Muslim period.

Here, you can contemplate a collection of unique and valuable items that have been discovered in the last few years.

This is the ideal place to learn about Estepona’s history and previous civilizations. Admire anything from a 5000-year-old mini statue of the Venus of Estepona to the grave goods of the Roman and Byzantine empires.

20. Check out the Estepona Street market

With over 250 stalls, the Estepona Street market is one of the markets to check out in Costa del Sol.

It’s a very lively market where you can find anything from fresh vegetables and fruits and spices to clothes, jewellery, handmade crafts and flowers.

The market takes place in Calle Eslovaquia from 9 am to 2 pm every Wednesday.

If you aren’t in Estepona on a Wednesday, visiting Mercado Municipal de Abastos (Estepona’s main market) is an alternative option.

21. Play golf near Estepona

Estepona is a hotspot for golfers in Costa del Sol. The weather, the pitch conditions and the surroundings are some of the reasons to choose Estepona as your next golf destination.

If you’re wondering what the best golf resorts near Estepona are, you need to check out Doña Julia Golf Club, Valle Romano and El Paraíso Golf.

22. Explore Dólmenes de Coromínas

Dólmenes de Coromínas is a place worth visiting for anyone who loves archaeology. Unfortunately, I didn’t have time to visit it on my recent visit to Estepona, but it’s on my list.

This archaeological museum counts five unique monuments for you to discover and also hosts concerts – from jazz and classical to flamenco music – so it’s worth checking out their calendar. It’s definitely a distinctive place to enjoy a live concert.

It’s located 15 minute drive from the old town; therefore, you’ll need a car to get to this museum.

23. Go on a scenic hike to Sierra Bermeja

Sierra Bermeja is a mountain range that goes from Ronda to Casares. What makes Sierra Bermeja unique is the presence of peridotite, a volcanic rock that gives this mountain range garnet tones.

The weather conditions, rocks and location are perfect for the growth of unique plants that you won’t find anywhere else.

Most of the hiking trails in the area are either moderate or challenging but take you through beautiful scenery. Pinsapo to Picos Los Reales is among the most popular hikes. In this almost 10 km circular trail, you’ll see a waterfall as well as breathtaking views of Africa and the Sierra Nevada mountains.

24. Experience Selwo Aventura

Selwo Aventura offers a fun day out for families and those who love animals. A few minutes drive from Estepona, so there’s no reason not to visit this safari.

It’s home to thousands of animals (from monkeys and lions to zebras and parrots), some of which live in semi-captive conditions.

The safari is huge, so you can spend a full day exploring the different parts and seeing the animals. If you love a bit of adrenaline, make sure to go on the zip wire and suspension bridge. I was a bit nervous about going on the zip wire, but I loved it once I tried it.

When visiting Selwo Aventura with little ones, it’s worth checking out the daily exhibitions and animal experiences. There are talks about birds, elephants and much more.

If you’re travelling across the Costa del Sol, you might also hear about Selwo Marina in Benalmadena. I recommend Selwo Aventura over Selwo Marina. It has many more animals, it’s bigger, and I find the price to be more reasonable.

25. Go on a day trip to Marbella

Estepona is only 30 minute by car, so it’s a fantastic short day trip, and you can do it by driving or getting the bus.

Marbella isn’t only about its port and parties; there’s much more than that in this coastal town.

You have many activities to do in Marbella in a day. Marbella old town is a must-see – its picturesque whitewashed streets with bougainvillaea flowers hanging down the walls, its monuments and buildings like Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación church and its former castle.

During your time in the old town , stop at Plaza de los Naranjos (Orange Square) to enjoy a drink or meal. The atmosphere is vibrant.

Puerto Banus is another place to add to your list. It’s one of the most expensive ports in Spain. Here you can see impressive yachts and luxurious shops.

If you visit Marbella in the summer, go to the beach. Marbella is home to some of the best golden sand beaches in Costa del Sol .

26. Go on a day trip to Gibraltar

Would you love a day trip in which you can visit a new country? If so, you’re lucky because Estepona is close to Gibraltar, at only 45 minute drive.

Despite some people thinking Gibraltar isn’t special, this day trip is one of my favourites because you get to see another country, and it isn’t any country but a special one because of its multicultural influence.

Plus, you’ll have plenty of things to do on a day trip from Estepona to Gibraltar.

The first thing that you should add to your list is going to the Rock and Upper Nature Reserve. This is the most emblematic place in Gibraltar.

See the monkeys, get breathtaking views of Gibraltar, Spain and Africa from one place and explore the beauty of the reserve.

Other things to do in Gibraltar include shopping at Main Street, exploring its colourful streets, and spending the day at the Catalan beach.

If you prefer a more affordable option and stay at a boutique hotel, Hotel Estepona Plaza is a great option.

Situated in the heart of Estepona, you can’t find a better location if you want to stay central. This 3-star hotel has 36 rooms with 4 different styles, but all of them offer modern and comfortable beds, air conditioning, Smart TV, WiFi, and bathroom amenities. In addition to this, daily breakfast is included.

Regarding food options, the hotel has a cafe and bar that serves breakfast, tapas, and cocktails.

H10 Estepona Palace

Located at 20 minute walk from Estepona Marina, H10 Estepona Palace is another great hotel in the area.

Although I haven’t personally stayed in this hotel, I can’t say anything negative about H10 hotels after staying in one in Barcelona.

The hotel integrates a modern but Andalusian style across the facilities and rooms. The rooms are spacious and include king-size beds, air conditioning, flat-screen TV, WiFi, and a minibar, among other amenities. All the rooms also have a lovely balcony, and some of the balconies overlook the sea.

Regarding facilities, you can enjoy two pools (one of them is heated, so it can be used in winter), two restaurants, a bar and a spa with a Turkish bath and a fitness centre.

How to get to Estepona

The fastest way to travel from Malaga city centre to Estepona by car is driving via AP-7, which includes tolls, and the journey will take you only 1 hour.

Another option is to take the A-7 motorway, which offers scenic views of the coast, but it’ll take you approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes to get to Estepona; this is taking into consideration that there’s no traffic.

If you’re travelling to Estepona from Malaga Airport, the fastest way is also taking AP-7. In this case, it’ll only take you 50 minutes.

Travelling to Estepona from Malaga city centre and Malaga Airport is easy. You need to get the AVANZA bus towards Algeciras as it stops in Estepona. The bus journey takes approximately 1 hour and 10 minutes, and tickets start from 8 euros per one-way ticket.

Your last option is to book a private transfer. This is especially a great idea if you travel with a group of friends or you’re a large family because you’ll save money on transportation and it’s a comfortable way to get to your accommodation.

You can visit Estepona year-round because of its sunny and warm weather.

Summer is best for relaxing at the beach or doing water activities, whereas autumn, winter and spring are best for sightseeing.

Although you can go sightseeing in summer too, it’s more challenging because of the extreme heat. The temperatures can reach up to 40 degrees Celsius (104°F).

This is the town’s main plaza and is where the tourism office is located as well as Casa de las Tejerinas - an 18th century building that was once a hospital for the poor. Surrounding the plaza are various cafes and restaurants that are nice to sit outside at when the sun is shining. It’s always a beautiful plaza to visit with its abundance of flowers year round.

Iglesia Nuestra Señora de los Remedios

The Iglesia Nuestra Señora de los Remedios is an iconic landmark in Estepona that you’ve probably come across in photos. It was built in the 18th century, and although it’s the main church in Estepona today, it was once a monastery chapel. Following the Lisbon earthquake of 1755 the chapel became the parish church instead. It’s one of the best places to visit in Estepona and you’ll be able to photograph the tower from many different areas of the old town too.

If you’re thinking of doing some shopping in Estepona, Calle Real has a large selection of shops to choose from and it’s completely pedestrianized, located less than 5 minutes from the waterfront. The other two main streets in Estepona, Calle Terraza and Calle Caridad , are also worth exploring with the latter having a bit more traditional charm than the other two.

Castillo de San Luis

Did you know that there’s a castle in Estepona? Castillo de San Luis was once a mighty castle that's now almost completely disappeared. The castle was originally built in the 15th century along with a series of defensive towers along the coast. Today you can walk around the castle wall and relax in a garden that’s been placed between the castle and the market. This isn’t one of Estepona's most popular tourist attractions but it’s worth visiting if you’re interested in the history of the town.

Museo Arqueológico

Looking for things to do in Estepona when it rains? Visiting the Museo Arqueológico is a great option. The town’s archaeological museum is housed within Casa del Ajibe , or the old town hall, and is completely free to enter. Inside you can immerse yourself in thousands of years worth of history and take a look at over 400 pieces on display. The building itself is very impressive and is a nice spot for a photo.

Torre del Reloj

Estepona’s clock tower, Torre del Reloj , was once part of the oldest ecclesiastical building along the Costa de Sol. The church was completed in 1473 and was built on the site of an old mosque. Sadly the Lisbon earthquake of 1755 destroyed everything apart from the clock tower. Rather than rebuilding the church the parish was moved to Iglesia Nuestra Señora de los Remedios and the clock tower was preserved.

A unique thing to do in Estepona is to visit El Orquidario , located a short walk from the main part of the old town. The orchid house is home to over 1000 species of orchids from all parts of the world and visitors can take a self-guided tour inside for just €3. If you’re not the type of person who enjoys looking at plants though, I would still recommend walking to El Orquidario to take a look at its impressive architecture from the outside.

Go mural hunting

As you make your way out of the old town you’ll come across a number of unique murals throughout the streets. The murals can be found on all types of buildings and are often at different heights, so make sure you look up as well! No two murals are the same so if you’re a fan of art you can go on a little treasure hunt for the best murals in Estepona.

Estepona Marina

One of the best things to do in Estepona is to take a walk from the old town and visit Estepona Marina . It’s the third largest marina in the province and is always busy with its variety of restaurants and bars. In the off season it’s quieter so you’re able to enjoy a relaxing sunset stroll.

A short walk from the marina is a lighthouse, Faro de Punta Doncella , which was built in the early 20th century and Plaza de Toros which has a unique asymmetrical design to its exterior that makes it stand apart from other bullrings in southern Spain.

Beaches and promenade

The choice of beaches in Estepona is one of the biggest draws to the coastal town. The beaches stretch along 21 km of coastline and vary in size, with some being more built up than others. The most popular beaches include Playa de la Rada , Playa Cristo , Playa de la Cala , and Playa del Padron . I would suggest doing your own research beforehand to find the ones you like the most.

When we visited Estepona they were completely revamping the promenade all the way from the old town to the marina. The promenade is beautiful to walk along with plenty of space for large crowds and provides easy access to the main beaches.

Now that you know about the best things to do in Estepona, what about food? There are a lot of places to eat in Estepona, especially in the old town and along the promenade. Some of these eateries are very tourist oriented though, so it can be difficult to find the best spots. These are the places I would highly recommend eating at in Estepona that are locally run.

Las Gitanillas

One of the best restaurants in Estepona’s old town has to be Las Gitanillas . They’ve been dishing out the best Andalucían cuisine for decades. The speciality of this restaurant is fresh seafood which they pick up daily from a local market. Las Gitanillas prides themselves on being a zero-kilometre restaurant meaning all of their food is sourced as close to Estepona as possible. The head chef and owner even enjoys picking his own avocados before the restaurant opens! You’ll have a fantastic dining experience here, but what should you order?

We sampled some of their most popular dishes, paired with locally made wines, when we visited for dinner. One of their latest refreshing dishes is grilled avocado with an orange vinaigrette, chopped tomatoes, and onions all topped with fresh parsley. The tuna tartare is another great sharing option, as are the tiger king prawns baked in a bed of salt which are plated up right in front of your table.

The rodaballo (turbot) is a beautiful white fish that’s also prepared in front of you and comes with a side of potatoes and broccoli. There are other options on the menu other than fish but Las Gitanillas is well known for its seafood and as Estepona is a fishing village you shouldn’t miss this dining opportunity.

And of course you can’t forget dessert! I would highly recommend ordering the apple tart that’s served with vanilla ice cream and molasses. It’s a very unique dessert using fresh ingredients that really blend well together. If you’re wondering where to eat in Estepona, you won’t be disappointed at this family-run restaurant in the heart of the old town.

El Patio del Macarena

El Patio del Macarena is located down a narrow street just off of Plaza Antonia Guerrero. This traditional restaurant offers some of the best tapas in Estepona and is a very popular spot with the locals. The menu is quite varied, offering a good selection of products from the region, with a mixture of unique takes on classic dishes as well as typical tapas plates that both tourists and locals adore.

Wherever I go for tapas I have to order the patatas bravas . El Patio del Macarena’s take on this popular tapas dish combines two different sauces on top of potato wedges - each were equally delicious. We also tried their flavourful prawns on a skewer , fried aubergines drizzled with molasses, and toast with roquefort and pork sirloin . If you’re on the hunt for tapas in Estepona’s historic centre then this is your place to go.

Amarillo Coffee & Lounge

Breakfast is my favourite time of the day so I’m always looking for the best breakfast or brunch spots to try out. We came across Amarillo Coffee & Lounge as we were driving to Estepona from Málaga and we’re very glad we stopped by. It’s located a short drive out of the old town, in Guadalmansa, but is definitely worth the drive. As well as having some incredible healthy dishes on their menu, Amarillo Coffee & Lounge have an equally unique selection of coffee to choose from which is always a nice way to start the day.

Their acai bowl is a must-try filled with fresh fruits, granola, and grated coconut. If you want to have another of their main dishes I would recommend ordering this to share as it can be quite filling with all of that healthy goodness inside. Their American Breakfast is a nice hearty choice for your first meal of the day, or you can opt for one of their bagels which are a big hit with customers. Don’t forget to order a freshly blended smoothie to cap off your breakfast or brunch!

Churrería El Barco

What’s a trip to Spain without having churros? There are plenty of traditional churrerías located around Estepona but after much research we decided to visit Churrería El Barco . This churrería has always been a popular place for local fishermen to grab a quick coffee and something to eat in the morning and it didn’t disappoint. We ordered 5 churros, chocolate for dipping, a coffee, and a freshly squeezed orange juice all for under €7 - what a bargain!

Where To Stay in Estepona’s Old Town

Veranera hostel.

There aren’t too many hostels in Estepona to choose from, but if you want a very modern option in the heart of the old town with private rooms available and a beautiful rooftop then you need to book Veranera Hostel . This hostel has only been open a few months and is quickly becoming one of the best places to stay in Estepona’s old town.

The shared areas include a large kitchen, a reception and dining area complete with complimentary tea and coffee as well as individual baskets to store your food, a TV room, a workspace on the first floor, and a rooftop with seating, a bar, and a small pool. The views from the rooftop are amazing so I would recommend spending some time up there.

We booked a private double ensuite room with a balcony , located on the first floor. As the hostel is newly opened everything in the room was immaculate. The double bed was extremely comfortable and we had a lot of space for our luggage too. The bathroom was almost as big as the bedroom with a beautiful walk-in shower and towels are included with this type of room. If you forget to bring shower products with you there are some shared ones available in the main lobby.

We loved our little balcony overlooking one of the streets of the old town which is a nice feature that you don’t often get with hostels. Dorm rooms are also available if you prefer or are on a tighter budget. If you like to be surrounded by other travellers then Veranera Hostel will be the perfect choice of accommodation in Estepona for you.

This is one coastal town in southern Spain that’s worth visiting for more than a few hours, but if you can only spend a day in Estepona you’ll still have a wonderful time. Most of the top things to do in Estepona are within walking distance of one another and if you have some spare time would suggest going on at least one day trip from Estepona as well. With its location along the Costa del Sol and at the foot of the Sierra Bermeja there are almost endless possibilities of places to visit near Estepona.

Estepona is located on the Costa del Sol in Spain.

Estepona has maintained much of its original charm giving it that pueblo ambiance and isn’t like its neighbours Marbella, Benalmadena and Torremolinos which have been massively built up to deal with hordes of tourists.

Estepona has two airports a short transfer away of which Gibraltar Airport is the closest. Malaga International Airport, a little further away has many daily services to the United Kingdom and beyond.

Hotels and Accommodation

When it comes to accommodation Estepona has over forty hotels in all categories and price ranges. Estepona hotels that have been recommended include the Hotel Senator Banús Spà Hotel, Kempinski Hotel Bahia, Gran Hotel Elba Estepona Thalasso & Spa and the Marriott’s Plaza Andaluza.

People who wish to book self catering holidays to Estepona will find plenty of villas and apartments that they can rent either privately through the owner or with a tour operator.

What To See and Do

Estepona has a picturesque, modern, stylish marina and is well known for it’s fish restaurants and luxurious yachts moored there.

There are over one hundred and eighty highly recommended Estepona restaurants by Tripadvisor of which the top ten to visit includes La Pampa, Itapu Bar & Restaurant, Cocomo, Tandoori Nights, Tehuelche Grill Argentino, Cinnamon, La Alcaria de Ramos, Le Petit Paris, Casa Miguel and Tanino.

Consider Kokomo restaurant on Avenida Pernet 26, Nueva Atalaya which is a elegant modern restaurant serving an International cuisine. “Set in a mature garden, the covered terrace captures a cooling breeze on the hot summer evenings. Exclusive Gin Menu and have over 25 exquisite Gins to choose from. Our fresh Sunday lunch, 2 courses for 18.95, is simply delicious and changes weekly to reflect the local produce available. Simply the best quality and value roast dinner on the Costa Del Sol.”

Night life revellers in Estepona should make their way to the Marina and here they can dance the night away at Tolone’s and Lola’s also come highly recommended.

Estepona bars worth spending an evening at include Bar Caleu, O´Donoghues Irish Pub, El Duende, Comic and Vanilla.

The main beaches of Estepona are La Rada Beach and El Cristo Beach while Costa Natura Spain’s very first nudist gated community can be found on the outskirts of the resort.

Estepona is located in the heart of the “Costa del Golf” and in the resort and its vicinity there are a number of different courses on which to play which are the Club de Golf Los Almendros, Valle Romano Golf & Resort, Estepona Golf, the Finca Cortesin Golf Club, Casares Costa Golf and the Doña Julia Golf Club.

To the north of Estepona are the tourist resorts of Punta Pinilos and Playa del Sol-Villacana which are great for spending a day away from the tourist crowds or playing golf at the nearby golf courses of La Resina Golf & County Club, Flamingos Golf Club, El Paraiso Golf Club, Monte Mayor Golf Club and the Atalya Golf and Country Club.

Selwo Safari Park

Days out for the whole family can be spent at Selwo Safari Park Estepona which is a zoo with natural surroundings. The park is open from March until November and ticket prices for adults are around €24.50 and €17.70 for children. For more information and opening times you can look at www.selwo.es .

Water and Theme Parks

The nearest water park is located in Mijas and goes by the name of the Aqualand. Ticket prices start at €15 for children and €20 for adults. The park is open from late April until early October. For more information you can look at www.aquamijas.com

In Benalmadena a little further up the coast you can visit Tivoli World and Sea Life while Fuengirola is home to the Fuengirola Bioparc and in Torremolinos you can visit the Crocodile Park .

Gibraltar with its shopping and attractions is less than twenty minutes away by car and is well worth visiting.

Estepona is definitely the place to come and enjoy a golfing holiday amongst some very luxurious surroundings.

Moving to Estepona

Estepona remains very much a Spanish village with a large and beautiful historic old town situated minutes from the towns amenities and fantastic wide beach. Estepona´s Spanish identity makes it a unique location in the Costa del Sol and also ensures it has a life of its own outside the busy tourist season.

Would the area not suit certain types of people, i.e. are there any possible downsides?

If you are looking for expensive shops and glitzy nightlife then Estepona is not for you. It is a normal town with fabulous local restaurants and a vibrant nightlife which is the antithesis of Puerto Banus.

What proportion of the local population are Spanish?

In the town probably close to 90 percent. Outside of the town probably 60-70 percent.

What are your favourite things to do in the area?

Eat at many of the excellent local fish restaurants with a group of friends, crawl the various tapas bars around town, cycle along the paseo to the port, enjoy a drink in one of the beach chiringuitos, relax on the beach with friends.

Can you give us some insider tips to the best bars or restaurants?

El Pescador – One of the main stays in Estepona, by the beach with a good playground on the beach for families. Excellent fish and rice dishes, tartar de atun, fish of the day a la plancha

La Rada – Another institution in Estepona, incredible value set course lunches, excellent fish and in fact very good meat also

Simonitos – Old school fish restaurant, sit at the bar with a caña and order fried tuna and a tapa of marinated peppers

Casa del Rey – Beautifully refurbished tapas restaurant in the main square of Plaza las Flores with a great selection of tapas and the best wine selection in town

Taberna de Miguel – Traditional tapas and formal restaurant on one of the main streets in Estepona, very good revueltos, fish, meat and tapas

Taberna de Andalucia – A fish tapas restaurant in the centre of town offering very good food where you can watch the world go by. They also have a restaurant of the same name in the port.

Sur Restaurant – Charming Argentinian restaurant in one of the main plazas with excellent meat, empanadas, wine and good Moroccan tagines

La Bulla – Experimental and excellent tapas bar in one of the main squares

Tolone – A place to have breakfast or an illy coffee or one of their excellent smoothies and homemade cakes and cookies

El Caliente – The place for breakfast after a night out unless you want churros, good montaditos (little sandwiches) or pan con tomate y sal and aceite

Churreria la Cordobesa – The best churros in town

Chiringuito el madero – Open only in summer, reasonable seafood and good mojitos!

Rincon Toscano – The best pizzas in town

La Escollera – Very traditional fish restaurant in the port, best to arrive early at the weekends as it gets packed, eat in the bar for the real experience!

Are there many facilities such as doctors and dentists, shops etc?

Yes there are many both private and state doctors and dentists. Estepona has a good range of shops and new shops are opening all the time.

Are there smaller villages nearby that you might also recommend?

Yes. Casares, Gaucin, Genagaucil.

What are the nearest international schools and how good are they?

There are a lot of choices. In Estepona town is the excellent San Jose School. Close to town is the Mayfair International school and the new school in Benahavis.

Is crime an issue for expats?

Crime is not an issue in Estepona.

Coming onto buying property, what is the market like now in terms of prices going up, or down or staying the same?

In line with other areas on the coast, prices are rising slowly. Estepona, since the rejuvenation program by the mayor, has changed significantly and has seen a massive increase in demand.

Is this a good time to buy and are there any repossessions or very cheap properties still available to buy?

Prices are still cheap compared to the highs of 2006. Sales volumes are nearly the same as 2006 so this is why we predict sales prices will increase.

What urbanisations are there and can you describe each one and how they might differ from each other?

A selected few would include:

Alcazaba beach – built in 1986 but still one of the best urbanizations on the coast

Los Granados del mar – Luxury Apartments walking distance to Estepona

Torre Bermeja and Cabo Bermejo – Luxury Apartments, very high quality by Las Dunas hotel

Seghers – for buyers wanting to be in town but owning a villa near the beach

El Paraiso – established leafy villa community with excellent golf courses

Casasola – beachside luxury villas on the border of Marbella

Estepona old town – flower filled streets and convenient living by the sea and close to amenities

How much are the typical property prices in Estepona for apartments, villas etc?

There is a huge range. Apartments can be as low as 200,000 euros and reach over 2 million euros. Villas can be as low as 400-500,000 euros and reach 15 million euros for fabulous beachside pads.

Is Estepona near Benidorm?

People who like Estepona would love Benidorm but they are not at all close. Benidorm is far away on Spain’s Costa Blanca coast which is a distance of 600 km and a drive time of 5 hours and 50 minutes. If you want more bars and clubs try Fuengirola, Marbella or Torremolinos instead.

ESTEPONA FLORAL ART CLUB meet on the third Tuesday of the month from September to May when different qualified floral artists from create five or six arrangements which are raffled at the end of the meeting. The town offers a large number of good places to eat, among them, a bunch of excellent fish frying and seafood restaurants, known as freidurias and marisquerias, along Calle Terraza, the main street which cuts through the centre – try the Restaurant La Gamba located in Edificio Jacaranda at the end of the Seafront towards Malaga.

There’s an excellent churreria towards the southern end of the town in Calle Real ( one block back from, and parallel to, the promenade ) – get there before 11 am as they sell out early.

For market lovers, there is a covered market that sells fresh food daily and is located on Calle Villa which opens up early in the morning up to around 14.00 each day except Sundays.

Estepona’s nightlife centres on the recently pedestrianised Calle Real, running behind and parallel to the seafront and the Marina area. Here you will find enough clubs, music bars, and lively pubs to satisfy every night owl.

One popular option is to rent a car at Malaga Airport . The drive from the airport to Estepona takes approximately one hour via the AP-7 toll motorway. The route offers scenic views of the coastline and allows you the flexibility to explore the surrounding areas at your own pace. The road network in the region is well-maintained, and there are clear signposts guiding you to Estepona.

Alternatively, if you prefer not to drive, you can take a direct bus from Malaga Airport to Estepona. The journey takes around 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on traffic conditions. The bus service is operated by Avanza and offers a comfortable and cost-effective option for travellers. It's recommended to check the bus schedules in advance to plan your journey accordingly.

Once you're in Estepona, the town itself is compact and easily navigable on foot. However, if you wish to explore the surrounding areas or travel along the coast, there are regular bus services available. The local bus network connects Estepona with nearby towns and villages, including Marbella , Puerto Banus, and Gibraltar. It's a convenient and affordable way to discover the Malaga region and beyond.

There is no train service to Estepona as yet from Malaga as the coastal train stops at Fuengirola which is approximately 40 kilometre’s away.

Estepona, on the world-famous Costa del Sol, conserves all the charms of a typical Andalusian town, with its peaceful squares bedecked with colourful flowerpots and little white houses. It is also a holiday resort offering all the latest modern amenities, golf clubs and sporting and recreational areas.

Its 21 kilometres of coastline are home to a number of beaches that have been awarded the European Blue Flag. Highlights include the areas along the seafront promenade and the marina (which every Sunday is the site of a street market offering traditional products and arts and crafts). Right in the centre is the beach of La Rada, the perfect place for a dip.

The lovely old town centre fits the classic image of Andalusia, with restored streets of whitewashed houses, crowded with pots of bright flowers. There are several art routes around the town, such as the Murals Route, with over 40 works of art, the Sculpture Route, with over 30 pieces by different artists, and the Poetry Route, with works in several languages. Notable buildings include the Clock Tower, the 18th century church of Los Remedios, and the former San Luis Castle. Also worth a visit are the megalithic necropolis of Corominas, the original bullring, the Plaza de las Flores, Casa del Aljibe (home of the Archaeological Museum), and the Botanical Gardens and orchid house.

Estepona’s numerous restaurants run the gamut from traditional Mediterranean dishes to innovative, international cuisine. We recommend the salt-baked fish, 'fritura malagueña' (mixed fried fish platter) and char-grilled sardines.

Nature, sport, and countryside

Nature lovers will enjoy a side trip to the S ierra Bermeja natural park , where they can climb the Pico de los Reales (1,449 metres) for views over the western Costa del Sol, the Rock of Gibraltar, and the north coast of Africa. Estepona is also home to several golf courses, the Costa del Sol School of Equestrian Art, and the Selwo Aventura leisure park, where over 2,000 animals live side by side in semi-freedom. Another worthwhile excursion just a few kilometres away is to Manilva, which has seven kilometres of beaches along its coastline. Nearby is the historic-artistic site of Casares, presided by the church of La Encarnación and the Torre de la Sal tower. Continuing on along the coast you'll come to Marbella, one of the most important holiday resorts on the Costa del Sol, and Fuengirola, a town boasting a profound Andalusian heritage with magnificent beaches.

A visit to Estepona’s Centro Historico (Estepona Old Town) will give you a feel of a typical Andalusian town. It’s easy to spend a couple of hours exploring charming whitewashed houses and winding alleyways. The locals proudly keep their streets clean, mostly traffic-free, and cheerfully decorated with geraniums, bringing more than a splash of color to the cobblestoned streets. It all makes for a very pleasant atmosphere while enjoying a stroll.

Not surprisingly for a historical center, you’ll find plenty of relics of times gone by in Centro Historico. The old fortress of Castillo de San Luis, which dates to the 15th century, is worth a visit, as is the town clock at Plaza del Reloj. After working up a thirst, you can make a pitstop at the town's attractive little cafes and restaurants.

Playa del Cristo (Cristo Beach)

Playa del Cristo is sheltered from the wind in a small cove, making it a family-friendly spot in Estepona. The 700-meter-long beach has an east-facing orientation which, coupled with its breakwater and the natural curve of the bay, gives it protection from the worst of the winds and waves. Combine this with its shallow waters, this all makes for a kid-friendly swimming spot. The beach received the iconic Blue Flag status in 2019.

Ruta de los murales artisticos.

The urban art found all along Ruta de los Murales Artisticos has helped attract lots of travelers to Estepona in recent years. While the old town is notable for its whitewashed houses, potted plants, and ceramic tiles, a trip to the surrounding neighborhoods will also be richly rewarded with views of the ever-changing Estepona murals.

Painted on the sides of apartment blocks and office buildings, the murals are diverse in subject material and style. The street art covers quite a large area, so it's a good idea to pick up a map indicating the locations of these works of art at the tourist office. You can find it by the harbor or in Plaza de Las Flores.

Restaurants at Puerto Deportivo de Estepona serve some of the tastiest and freshest seafood in town. There’s a popular market offering plenty of local products and a fun atmosphere on Sundays.

Selwo Aventura Wildlife Park

A visit to Selwo Aventura Wildlife Park lets you see around 2,000 exotic animals in an expansive plot of land. Located in the hills above Estepona, the 100-hectare park is just 15 minutes from Estepona town by car. You’ll get a chance to view lions, tigers, rhinos, zebras and giraffes in various enclosures.

There are many attractions to keep you entertained throughout your visit, including hanging bridges, a zipline, trampoline, and archery. Selwo Aventura Wildlife Park also offers a couple of restaurants and an ice cream shop to keep you fed and watered.

Sierra Bermeja

At 1,449 meters high, Sierra Bermeja looms over the landscape behind Estepona. This mountain range gets its name and distinctive red appearance from the iron deposits found here. While hiking, you might see wildcats, ibex, golden eagles, falcons, vultures, and plenty of common reptiles.

There are lots of hiking trails offering views out towards the African coast from the mountain slopes. For those looking for an easier hike, the Reales de Sierra Bermeja Trail features a 6.5-km route up through a Spanish fir forest with great views. For the more seasoned hiker, there is a 15-km hiking trail to the top of the Reales which takes about 9 hours. It's not recommended during the summer due to the heat and lack of water sources.

Playa de la Rada (Rada Beach)

The largest beach in Estepona, Playa de la Rada spans around 2.6 km of sand along with with a host of beach amenities. You’ll find almost everything, from children’s play areas with trampolines to a basketball court and fitness trail.

As the closest beach to Centro Historico (Estepona Old Town), you’re within a short distance of the old town's many dining options. There are lots of apartment buildings and hotels nearby Playa de la Rada, so this location is excellent if you want to combine a beach vacation with all the convenience of an urban town.

Dólmenes de Coromínas

Dólmenes de Coromínas is an underground museum and necropolis containing 5 well-preserved tombs – or dolmens – dating from around 3,000 BC. The futuristic museum contrasts with the ancient artifacts it houses, which you’ll find a treasure trove of jewelry, arrowheads, stone tools, and pottery.

Dólmenes de Coromínas also displays more gruesome relics in the form of skulls and bones. Note that these are just reproductions as the originals are kept in storage. There’s an English-speaking guide available if you want to gain a deeper insight into the museum's exhibits.

Estepona has 17 beaches stretching to over 20km of coastline. The closest beaches to or location are La Rada beach and Playa Del Cristo.

Cristo beach is 5 mins west of the port and is a shallow protected cove popular with families. In the high season it is lifeguarded and provides chiringuitos (bar/restaurant) for refreshments.

La Rada is the main beach of Estepona. It is much larger and wider and stretches over 2.5km in length. It is backed by a lovely flower lined promenade which leads to the old town. Along the beach is a whole host of amenities, bars, restaurants to cater everybody.

Estepona's port and marina is working fishing port with a host of bars and restaurants offering the perfect place to sit and enjoy its elegance. The port is also the location of a popular Sunday street market selling mostly textile, leather goods, trinkets and gifts.

The historic town of Estepona is known as the old town. It has white washed buildings and flower lined streets which has earned Estepona the title of The garden of Spain.

The town offers plenty of shops, bars, restaurants and small squares to sit try some Tapas, or just relax and watch the world go by.

The indoor market offers stalls selling fresh meat, fish and vegetables.

Orchidarium

The orchidarium close to the old town is a modern botanical park housing over 8000 species of which 1300 are orchids. It has europe's most extensive collection of orchid's and one of the largest in the world. The building has 2 floors with a 17 meter high waterfall to reflect closely the orchid's natural habitat. Entry is €3

Selwo Aventura (Highly recommended)

The largest park on the Costa del Sol where you can go on safari. With over 1000 animals spread over 14 hectares, zip line, hanging bridge. It is a new concept of zoo and a tourist symbol of Estepona. The Selwo pack is best value for money where you have a day at the main park, the Selwo marina sea life park in Benalmadena and the Benalmadena cable car which offers magnificent views of the Costa del Sol. At an extra cost there is a bird of prey flight presentation at the top of the cable car.

The Costa Del Sol is a golfers paradise offering around 64 courses which means there are plenty of courses in and around Estepona to satisfy all levels of golf enthusiasts.

The local courses are: Estepona golf, Valle Romano Golf, La Duquesa Golf and Country Club, La Resina Golf and Country Club, El Paraiso Golf Club, Finca Cortesin, Dona Julia resort and the recently opened Azata Golf.

Puerto Banus

The famous Puerto Banus is around half an hour drive East of Estepona and well worth a visit. It is renowned for its luxury marina and shopping complex drawing 5 million visitors a year. Soak up the sun and explore the many shops and see the luxury yacht's moored up and super cars usually parked in the area and relax on the sandy beach.

Gibraltar is around 45 minutes drive from our location. Known for territory owned by the British there is plenty of duty free shopping to be had. Take a cable car to the top of The Rock of Gibraltar and see the free roaming Barbary Macaques which inhabit the area. Gibraltar is also popular with tourists for boat trips along the Gibraltar straight for dolphin and whale spotting.

Sierra Bermeja

The Sierra Bermeja mountain range is a national park thats sits behind Estepona. The mountain range has an elevation of 550 meters and provides breathtaking views of the Costa del Sol, Africa and Gibraltar. The mountain range can be driven to the top. There are lots of trails for hiking/walking and mountain biking.

Estepona old town, centro historico.

A visit to Estepona’s Centro Historico (Estepona Old Town) will give you a feel of a typical Andalusian town. It’s easy to spend a couple of hours exploring charming whitewashed houses and winding alleyways. The locals proudly keep their streets clean, mostly traffic-free, and cheerfully decorated with geraniums, bringing more than a splash of colour to the cobblestoned streets. It all makes for a very pleasant atmosphere while enjoying a stroll.

Not surprisingly for a historical centre, you’ll find plenty of relics of times gone by in Centro Historico. The old fortress of Castillo de San Luis, which dates to the 15th century, is worth a visit, as is the town clock at Plaza del Reloj. After working up a thirst, you can make a pitstop at the town's attractive little cafes and restaurants.

Playa del Cristo (Cristo Beach)

Playa del Cristo is sheltered from the wind in a small cove, making it a family-friendly spot in Estepona. The 700-metre-long beach has an east-facing orientation which, coupled with its breakwater and the natural curve of the bay, gives it protection from the worst of the winds and waves. Combine this with its shallow waters, this all makes for a kid-friendly swimming spot. The beach received the iconic Blue Flag status in 2019.

The urban art found all along Ruta de los Murales Artisticos has helped attract lots of travellers to Estepona in recent years.
