Award-winning Northern Irish singer/songwriter Foy Vance has announced a very special tour to celebrate the 10 year anniversary of his breakthrough 2013 album Joy Of Nothing. Regarding The Joy Of Nothing Tour's first US leg will kick off on September 6 in Solana Beach, CA. Vance will return to the US on January 18, 2024 to kick off the tour's second US leg in Birmingham, AL.

Bonnie Bishop will provide support on all US dates. Pre-sale tickets will be available beginning May 9, and general on-sale begins on Friday, May 12 at 10:00am local time HERE .

Recorded in Donegal on Ireland's west coast, Joy Of Nothing was Vance's second full-length album and proved a critical and commercial breakthrough for the Bangor-born musician, winning the inaugural Northern Ireland Music Prize. All Music praised, "Steeped in the bold, big-sky expansiveness of the American Southwest, yet devoid of any of its machismo, Vance milks courage and strength from unflinching emotional honesty."

Joy Of Nothing features Ed Sheeran (on "Guiding Light") and Bonnie Raitt (on "You And I"), both of whom Vance supported on world tours, and he also toured with Sir Elton John and Snow Patrol, as well as his own sell-out headline tours.

Comments Foy: "It is hard to believe it has been 10 years since releasing the Joy of Nothing. Thanks to all of you that have listened to it. To those of you that have shared stories with me of what the album has meant to you, oftentimes opening my eyes to sides of the songs that I never knew existed. It's hard to articulate how much it means to have created something that you can inhabit just as well as I can. Regarding The Joy of Nothing... well it still exists and there is joy in it yet...here's to the next decade of 'naught and everything'."

In 2015, Vance became Ed Sheeran's second signing to his label Gingerbread Man Records and he has subsequently released two acclaimed studio albums, The Wild Swan (2016) and Signs Of Life (2021). As an in-demand songwriter, Vance's collaborations include co-writing four cuts including "Galway Girl" on Ed Sheeran's 2017 album Divide.

He has also worked with Alicia Keys, Rag N Bone Man, Keith Urban, Kacey Musgraves, Miranda Lambert, Plan B and Rudimental among many others, effortlessly switching between genres. Vance splits his time between London and the Scottish Highlands with his family.

Hailing from Northern Ireland and deeply rooted in the rich musical history of the Southern United States, Foy Vance has garnered acclaim from fans and fellow musicians alike since his independent debut album release in 2007. Foy released his second LP, Joy of Nothing , in 2013 on Glassnote Records, which led to further critical praise and invites on tours from Ed Sheeran, Bonnie Raitt, Marcus Foster, Snow Patrol, and Sir Elton John. Additionally, Foy has headlined tours globally to sell-out crowds.

Foy was the second artist signed to Gingerbread Man Records, Ed Sheeran’s label division within Atlantic Records. Foy’s debut recording with the label, The Wild Swan , was executive produced by Sir Elton John and released in 2016. In 2019, Foy released two companion albums, From Muscle Shoals and To Memphis , recorded at FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama and Sam Phillips Recording Studio in Memphis. His songwriting credits include cuts on Ed Sheeran’s 2017 album Divide , the title track on Sam Smith’s latest album Gloria, and collaborations with Alicia Keys, Keith Urban, Kacey Musgraves, Miranda Lambert, and more.

Foy Vance’s 2021 album, Signs Of Life , marked Foy’s second studio album ‘proper’ on Gingerbread Man Records and was a testament to his abilities as a songwriter. The thoughtful and poignant album was written and played more or less entirely by Vance, with assistance from young Northern Irish producer Gareth Dunlop, and received global recognition.

Foy Vance has a deep-rooted sound based in the Southern U.S., even though he’s from Northern Ireland. Thursday, he performs at Vilar Performing Arts Center’s second Underground Sound Series concert as part of his ‘Regarding the Joy of Nothing Tour 2023.’

Vance originally recorded “Joy of Nothing” in 2003 on Ireland’s west coast. He describes his Irish influence as a creative outlet that naturally imprinted itself upon him. As his second album, “Joy of Nothing” gained critical acclaim, winning the Northern Ireland Music Prize. It features Ed Sheeran on the track “Guiding Light,” as well as Bonnie Raitt on “You And I.”

“Making ‘Joy of Nothing’ marked a turning point in my life both personally and creatively. It was a freeing record to create, and I was experiencing newfound freedom in my personal life,” Vance said. “Everything about that time redefined my route forward, and a decade later that felt worth celebrating and releasing some previously unreleased songs from that period.”

The album’s anniversary edition includes three songs he didn’t originally include —  but says he probably should have: “Tigers,” “Concerning the Horizon” and “Aberfeldy.”

“I liked them enough at the time, and now I realize they are relevant to the lifespan of the album, but perhaps I didn’t know where to place them at the time. In fact, I’m still not sure where they would go, other than at the end, as they are now. ‘Concerning the Horizon’ is a nod to my past. ‘Aberfeldy’ is a nod to the present, and ‘Tigers’ regards a look into the future,” he said.

Support Local Journalism

The album contrasts his debut record, “Hope,” which resulted in him losing all but hope.

“I was failing to see the point in releasing another album. I figured I would just play live until I couldn’t anymore. Nothing felt worth talking about. Then a penny dropped, and ‘(Joy of) Nothing’ actually did feel worth talking about and singing about and writing about and figuring out. Nothing went from being the absence of something to being pregnant with everything,” he said.

In this vein, Vance’s songwriting seems to come about by not thinking about it, while still remaining open to inspiration.

“Everything and anything but appears to inspire thoughts, ideas, melodies, couplets or cadence or whatever. I suppose it is fair to say nature is the most inspiring. It has a glorious lack of human intent and feels so rich with unmined wisdoms, like when you hear people speaking a language you don’t understand but can’t help but feel an influence of some kind,” he said.

Though other musicians he has worked or toured with, including Alicia Keys, Keith Urban, Snow Patrol and even Elton John, may influence him subconsciously, he said he tries not to think about that, either.

“I try to influence that process as little as humanly possible myself, so thinking about how anyone else would approach it is the furthest thing from my mind. When songs are coming, I try to keep out of the way and just listen as best I can,” adding that, for the record, whomever he’s playing with — and working with on production — do influence the sound.

That comes through in the form of Sheeran, who signed Vance as his second artist to Gingerbread Man Records, a label division within Atlantic Records. Elton John was the executive producer on Vance’s first album with the label, “The Wild Swan,” released in 2016.

“Ed is a force of nature. The only thing I have come to expect from working with him is good energy —always pressing forward and always with an aim to do the right thing,” he said.

This year, Vance was nominated for an Emmy Award for Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics alongside co-writer Sheeran and producer Max Martin for Sheeran’s “A Beautiful Game,” featured on the hit Apple TV+ series “Ted Lasso.” Sheeran was a fan of the show, and Vance had heard rave reviews about it from friends.

“We knew we had to write something as universal as football itself and something that drew on the highs and lows of being passionate. The song came naturally. No cesarean section was required,” he said.

In 2019, he released two companion albums, “From Muscle Shoals” and “To Memphis.” Additionally, he has co-written songs for Sheeran’s 2017 album, “Divide,” and Sam Smith’s title track on “Gloria,” and collaborated with other well-known musicians. His latest album, aside from the anniversary release of “Joy of Nothing,” in 2021 (“Signs of Life”) showcases his talent as a songwriter.

His VPAC show will feature songs from “Joy of Nothing,” as well as other albums, but he’s never sure where shows will go: “I plan to be as surprised as (the audience is),” he said. “I am looking forward to it. It is never lost on me that people make so many plans, booking hotels, making flights, organizing babysitters, long drives, etc., all so I can stand there and lose myself in music with them for a couple of hours. I have arguably the best job in the world.”

Foy Vance: Regarding The Joy of Nothing Tour, The Croxton, Melbourne, November 24th 2023 – Live Review

There are many artists that I never would have discovered if I had not seen them as the support act of a tour. One of those artists is Foy Vance.

Way back in December 2015, Ed Sheeran performed at AAMI Park and one of the supports on that tour was, you guessed it, Foy Vance . Falling in love with his songwriting, vocals, and overall talent, I started listening to a lot of his music. One of those albums was Foy Vance ’s second studio album, ‘Joy of Nothing’ which quickly became my go to album on my playlist.

And whilst Foy Vance returned in 2015 and again in 2016 for solo shows, I have been craving to see him live again ever since. Thankfully, his return was imminent with his ‘Regarding the Joy of Nothing Tour’ , a 10-year celebration to his previously mentioned second studio album ‘Joy of Nothing’ .

Performing at Melbourne’s Croxton Bandroom, Foy Vance had three acoustic guitars on stage aching to be played. On the floor was an interesting looking effects bank, complete with a foot pedal organ looped in and to the left of stage, an electric baby grand piano. The stage was dimly lit, and the audience was eager for his arrival.

Foy appeared on stage to a rapturous applause and sat down at the piano opening with the first track off the ‘Joy of Nothing’ album, ‘Closed Hand, Full of Friends’ . With the venue intimately lit, the moment he struck the first note, the crowd cheered. The cheers and whistles continued as Foy ’s incredible vocals bellowed throughout the venue. Being on photo duties for the evening, I could hear the audience sing back during the chorus. He seamlessly transitioned into ‘Sapling’ from his 2021 album ‘Signs of Life’ . The timber in his voice sent chills down my spine, and I knew I was in for a wonderful evening with his stunning voice.

Continuing on the piano with ‘Bangor Town’ from his 2016 album ‘The Wild Swan’ . During the song, Foy told a story about how every town has their town drunks and the two of Bangor were Jerry and Julie. How they both had a thirst for knowledge, just that their thirst for vodka was much greater. Not only was this a prelude to the final part of the song about Jerry, but also a wonderful appetiser for the various stories we were going to hear that night.

As Foy stood up from the piano to grab a guitar, one audience member shouted, “I love you, Foy ” to which Foy provided quick-witted response, “I’d need the lights up to say whether I love you or not” . I had almost forgotten how cheeky and funny he was and was excited for what other antics were to come.

Continuing his set with the title track from ‘Joy of Nothing’ and other album songs including the powerful ‘Janey’ , we got a taste for what the foot organ sounded like. The best way I can describe it is like a harmonising hum in the background and I cannot say that I have ever seen one used before and it added so much depth to his performance. Another addition to Foy ’s live arsenal is a loop station and various other effects. On his previous tours, Foy had a drummer with him. This time, on his own, the loop station work was fantastic.

Foy also showcased a talent I had never seen before. Using the pickups of his guitar and the effects pedals, he would sing directly into the acoustic hole of the guitar, creating a unique synth style sound. I was absolutely blown away! I have seen many different effects in my time, but never this. It was incredible!

As Foy continued to play songs from the ‘Joy of Nothing ’, including ‘At Least My Heart Was Open’ , he went on to explain how the album came to be. After releasing his first album, Foy shared that it took “seven long hard years, but I finally realised, nothin’ is worth writing about” and how he found solace in “enjoying the everything of nothing and the nothing of everything” , thus became the theme for the album.

Some of the highlights of the evening came from the participation of the crowd. One such track was ‘She Burns’ that included a joke intro as a country song with some patrons only realising the song was his own a few lyrics in. This joke was complete with Foy putting on his best western vocal work and lifting his leg up onto the foldbacks which had laughter ringing throughout the venue. The laughter quickly turned into a chorus as the entire venue eventually sang back.

Other highlights included ‘Feel for Me’ where the audience already knew what to sing back when Foy was setting up the song, bringing a beaming smile to his face. Each time the audience sang back, Foy would take a step back to soak it all in, and in that moment, he was the happiest man alive.

Easily the most touching moment of the evening was a heartfelt tribute to fellow Irish singer and songwriter, Sinéad O’Connor , with a gorgeous cover of ‘Nothing Compares 2 U’ . Having sadly passed away only recently this July, hearing the whole audience sing along to the iconic song with Foy got me all kinds of emotional.

Now, as amazing as the night was with plenty of singing, there was still sadly a lot of talking and murmurings heard within the audience while Foy Vance was singing. Nothing annoys me more than trying to enjoy the music and all you can hear are the conversations around you. It got to a point where it was even annoying Foy . He interjected, and exclaimed, “Sorry, is my gig getting in the way of your conversations over there?” . I am relieved that he called them out and appreciate that continued to do so for the rest of the gig as I wholeheartedly agree with what he said. I have no idea why you would pay money for a gig to just talk the whole time. It makes zero sense!

Rounding out the evening, Foy performed crowd favourite ‘You and I’ , complete with more audience participation, ‘Casanova’ and ‘Shed a Little Light’ . It was the latter where Foy decided to put down the guitar and get the audience to sing a harmony, allowing for his incredible vocals to shine. Finishing with an encore of ‘Guiding Light’ , even joking by saying “put your hands together for Keith Urban … he’s not here, I just wanted to say it” , before Foy left the stage, he stood to the side as the crowd continued to sing the final verse of the song, with everyone in the venue only accompanied by each other’s voices.

Thinking the gig was over, I headed to the back of the venue. But the audience was still singing and I was impressed. I don’t ever recall seeing an audience continue to sing long after the artist had left the stage before. Thankfully, Foy Vance returned, just as impressed, and treated us all to one last song, a wonderful cover of Michael Jackson ’s ‘Man in the Mirror’ .

Foy Vance is such a fantastic live act to see with plenty of great songs, heaps of audience participation, funny stories, cheeky banter, and no bullshit. His songwriting is as incredible as his vocals, and with the addition of the loop station and other effects to his live act, combined this all just elevates his already impressive musicianship. It was such a fun night! Experiencing this magnificent artist and his fans sing to each other was so endearing and it was a beautiful moment to be a part of.

Although the Australian leg of ‘Regarding the Joy of Nothing Tour’ over now, Foy Vance continues his tour internationally right up until February next year. His long awaited revisit to Australia was a joy to witness and I really hope that it doesn’t take another seven years for Foy Vance to return to our shores. Either way, I will definitely be there the next time he visits.

Foy Vance performed three dates across Australia, Brisbane at The Triffid on Tuesday November 21, Sydney at Factory Theatre on Wednesday November 22, and ending in Melbourne at The Croxton on Friday November 24.

Foy Vance

Hailing from Northern Ireland and deeply rooted in the rich musical history of the Southern United States, Foy Vance has garnered acclaim from fans and fellow musicians alike since his independent debut album release in 2007. Foy released his second LP, Joy of Nothing, in 2013 on Glassnote Records which led to further critical praise and invites on tours from Ed Sheeran, Bonnie Raitt, Marcus Foster, Snow Patrol and Sir Elton John. Additionally, Foy has headlined tours globally to sell-out crowds.

Foy was the second artist signed to Gingerbread Man Records, Ed Sheeran’s label division within Atlantic Records. Foy’s debut recording with the label, The Wild Swan, was Executive Produced by Sir Elton John and released in 2016. In 2019, Foy released two companion albums, From Muscle Shoals and To Memphis, recorded at FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama and Sam Phillips Recording Studio in Memphis. His songwriting credits include co-writing four cuts on Ed Sheeran’s 2017 album Divide, the title track on Sam Smith’s latest album Gloria and collaborations with Alicia Keys, Rag N Bone Man, Keith Urban, Kacey Musgraves, Miranda Lambert, Plan B and Rudimental.

Foy Vance’s 2021 album, Signs Of Life, marked Foy’s second studio album ‘proper’ on Gingerbread Man Records and was a testament to his abilities as a songwriter. The thoughtful and poignant album was written and played more or less entirely by Vance, with assistance from young Northern Irish producer Gareth Dunlop, and received global recognition.

In 2022, Foy embarked on the Signs of Live + 15 Years of Hope tour, celebrating his latest album as well as the anniversary of his debut record. This year, he’ll be heading out on the road once again to play songs from one of his most impactful album’s, as well as tracks from the rest of his poignant discography for the Regarding the Joy of Nothing Tour.
