GTA Tema to commemorate World Tourism Day with a tour

27th sep 2021    |     source: gna.

The Tema Regional Office of the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) would on September 24 tour some selected tourism sites in the region at part of activities to commemorate World Tourism Day.

The tour, dubbed "Tour with Tema" will witness patrons visiting some tourism destinations including: the Tsenku Waterfall, near Dodowa; Guggisberg Memorial Hall; Dodowa Forest; and the Shai Hills Resources Reserve all in the Shai-Osudoku District of the Greater Accra Region.

Participants would also undertake the Greenwich Meridian Line Walk, at Community One in Tema.

Mr Charles Buabin, GTA Tema Regional Director, told the Ghana News Agency in an interview at Tema ahead of the global commemoration on September 27, that the day will be marked at the Shai Hills Resources Reserve on the theme: "Tourism for Inclusive Growth".

The day is celebrated to herald the socio-economic, political, and cultural importance of the sector to national and international economies through Gross Domestic Product growth, jobs, and employment creation.

Mr Buabin said the tour, is expected to promote domestic tourism and make Ghana a preferred tourist destination not only in West Africa and Africa but globally.

He described the tour as a remarkable step towards the gradual recovery of the tourism sector.

According to him, the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, in conjunction with the Ghana Tourism Authority, had planned a four-day activity to mark the Day and discuss the theme, "Tourism for Inclusive Growth" to convey tourism's role in ensuring inclusive growth for communities and national development.

He noted that the 2021 World Tourism Organisation (WTO) Day Planning Committee had slated September 24 for holding the Public and Private Partnership (PPP) forum.

The forum is expected to bring together the public and private tourism sector stakeholders, relevant Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), NGOs, and Development Partners, to interface and dialogue progress, achievements, and failures of the Tourism sector at Ho in Volta Region.

The Tema Regional Director said the stakeholder engagement and interaction was to proffer planning toward addressing the teething complications of tourism growth and development, to support the creation of jobs and employment, and revenue mobilisation for national development.

Activities lined up for the celebration includes: Radio and TV discussions in the regions, planting of about 6,000 seedlings at major tourist sites across the country on September 25, Health Walk, mountain Afadjato Hiking Challenge, for which three winners will be declared and awarded; and Visits to Wli and Tagbo falls in the Volta Region.

The Grand Finale, which encapsulates fairs and exhibitions and WTO Day Durbar of chiefs, to climax the activities on Monday, September 27 at Hohoe in the Volta Region.

Mr Buabin said this year's theme was linked to outcome four and five of Governments' Programme of Action that sought to create decent employment through inclusive economic growth, and a skilled and vibrant workforce to support an inclusive growth path.

The official "International" World Tourism Day is held in a WTO-designated country with participation from the rest of the world; and this year's Day will be held in Cote d'Ivoire to essentially highlight a participatory approach to creating and sharing tourism wealth for poverty reduction, decency in living standards, and livelihoods security.

Ghana Tourism Authority set to celebrate 50 years with impressive growth in the sector

ghana tourism authority tema

The Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) has officially launched its 50th-anniversary celebrations with remarkable impact and growth in the tourism space commencing this week across the country.

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of GTA, Akwasi Agyeman during the launch recognized the efforts and sacrifices of people who have contributed in diverse ways to improve the authority as he discussed the performance of Ghana’s tourism sector.

Mr. Agyeman announced significant growth in the country’s tourism sector during the launch. According to him, Ghana experienced a 47% increase in international arrivals from 623,523 in 2021 to 914,892 in 2022, outperforming most African countries which were doing 65% of pre-pandemic levels, while Ghana did 81%.

He reiterated that this achievement was only plausible courtesy of the “Legacy initiatives” of the Akufo-Addo-led administration.

“This is a testament to the success of the many strategies we put in place such as the Destination Ghana campaign launched by H.E the President and our continuing effort through the Beyond the Return Project to be the Mecca of the African diaspora,” he said.

Mr. Agyeman also reported that the domestic tourism sector also recorded an impressive growth of 55% increase in domestic tourism from 588,946 in 2021, to 937,087 in 2022. He believes that “Ghanaians are discovering the beauty of our country and are choosing to explore their own backyard, which is great news for the local economy. Tourist sites such as Aburi Botanical Gardens, the Kumasi Zoo and the Kakum National Park all showed strong performance.”

He also highlighted GTA’s commitment as he promised continual and significant efforts to improve the tourism industry, including infrastructure improvements that will enhance the visitor experience and make it easier for tourists to access the many attractions that Ghana has to offer. The GTA boss intimated that, work has started on several projects, including the Aburi Botanical Garden, the Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum, the Yaa Asantewaa Museum and the Pikworo Slave camp among others.

“MOUs were signed with some 13 communities for project upgrades. This is in line with the new Legislative Instrument LI 2393 on Tourist sites and attractions. In the year, we undertook sensitisation of all players in the industry,” he added.

Mr. Agyeman further commended the private sector for investing in the tourism industry and expressed the commitment of the Ghana Tourism Authority to promoting Ghana as a top tourist destination.

The Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Hon. Ibrahim Mohammed Awal who graced the occasion congratulated GTA and its CEO for pushing beyond the limit. He, however, tasked the authority to attract a total of 1.2 million visitors by the end of the year.

Activities for the GTA @50 anniversary are set to include industry games, awards and dinner night, a presidential summit on rethinking Ghana’s tourism and familiarization trips among other exciting activities. The authority called on all stakeholders and Ghanaians to join them in the celebration.

Ghana Tourism Authority

Charles Buabin, Tema Regional Director, Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA), says tourism plays a crucial role in promoting and fostering sustainable rural development. He said rural tourism could be stimulated and enhanced further to contribute immensely in income generation and job creation for a diversified rural economy. The Regional Director was speaking in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Tema over the weekend to commemorate this year's World Tourism Day on the global theme: “Tourism and Rural Development.” According to him, rural tourism was increasingly becoming important, contributing to the development of communities and the sustainability of rural populations and economy generally. Whiles responding to the relationship between local tourism and rural development, he explained that “rural tourism helps to boost domestic economy as local residents position themselves to own small businesses along the value chain to improve their livelihoods." He said, “tourism brings technology transfer to the rural areas that may impact positively on the livelihood of rural dwellers to make valuable contribution to rural economies” and further stated that tourism had a positive correlation to development in rural settlements with the ability to preserve and promote natural and cultural heritage, cutting down rural-urban migration. He cited the Volta Estuary in Ada, the Beachfront of Prampram and beaches along the Accra-Tema beach road at Sakumono, hotels and hospitality facilities as some tourism sites that were significantly impacting the lives of the local people through the provision of jobs. He informed that plans were afoot to establish a Paragliding Training School uplands around Osuwem, in the Shai-Osudoku with the aim of giving local Ghanaians the needed skills to fly revellers, during the Kwahu Easter paragliding festival, hosted by the GTA annually. Speaking on the expected impact the Tourism Regulations, 2019 Legislative Instrument (LI 2393) had on rural development, the Regional Director mentioned the provision of training for tour and site guides and indirect certified and licensed jobs for people engaged in support services, such as tour guides, escorts and tour guards. He indicated that the Covid-19 Pandemic had immensely impacted the tourism sector, and said: “tourism is a major pillar of the economy, providing incomes and jobs for over 275,023 direct and 388,000 indirect jobs in 2019 with a record of 1.13 million arrivals and a contribution of some 3.3 billion dollars in foreign exchange – 27.9 per cent over the previous year.” “The sector posted a growth of 18 per cent, well above the global rate of growth of five per cent. There was an increase in the registration of tourism enterprises by 29 per cent, ” he noted, adding that expectation was to leverage on the 2019 performance to further boost the sector beyond the year of return when the crisis Covid-19 pandemic struck. In the immediate aftermath of the pandemic, Mr Buabin stated that the Tema Regional Directorate of the GTA provided; Personal Protective Equipment, thermometer guns, hand sanitizers, nose mask, soaps, Veronica buckets, information materials among others, to 98 establishments which were still operational in Tema. He said besides aggressively marketing the country as the preferred tourism destination in West Africa, The Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, had launched the “Beyond the Return” initiative, spanning 10 years, aimed at further energizing the momentum gained during the year of return in 2019. “The focus on rural tourism, with the coming into force of LI 2393 – Tourism Sites Regulations (2019) gives this year’s commemoration an even bigger twist of creating possibilities for the rural community, their respective district assemblies and resource owners to define ways to oversee attractions according to the regulations specified in the act 2393.” As part of activities lined up for this year’s commemoration of World Tourism Day in Tema, he said the Authority hoped to visit one of its Coconuts Plantation Projects at Tema New Town Beach and the Community 22 Polyclinic to better nurture them.
