Map for the New Year’s in Dublin: Grand Tour of Ireland (Plus) tour

Find your seat, pick a movie, and then try to get a wee bit of shuteye. The majesty and raw beauty of Ireland awaits.

Welcome to Dublin, the capital of Ireland! Once you arrive and drop your bags off at the accommodation, take a stroll to St. Stephen’s Green, Grafton Street, and Temple bar, where pub culture, literary history, and all-around charm await.

In the evening, enjoy a Welcome Dinner of local cuisine and drinks with fellow travelers at an authentic local spot. Afterwards, you’re free to take the party elsewhere!

Today's highlights:

  • Land at the airport and meet a waiting EF representative.
  • Transfer to your hotel to check in and check out your room.
  • Get familiar with the area around your hotel with an introductory walk with your Tour Director.

Today, see the best Dublin has to offer with a local guide on a tour of the city. Afterwards, enjoy a free afternoon in this bayside Irish capital.

  • Enter St. Patrick’s Cathedral, the 800-year-old church named after the famous saint.
  • Visit the Guinness Storehouse for a crash course in the history of Ireland’s signature beer. Then, let it all soak in high above Dublin with pints at Gravity Bar.
  • Explore Trinity College, one of the world’s oldest and most prestigious universities, and see the storied library that inspired Hogwarts’ own.
  • Sample Dublin’s natural beauty and urban escape at Phoenix Park—the largest park in Europe.
  • Count down to New Year’s in style—with dinner, drinks, and a toast at midnight.

Free time suggestions

Book of Kells: Stick around Trinity College after your tour for a chance to see the Book of Kells—a pristine 1,200-year old illustrated collection of biblical stories—up-close. Jameson Distillery: Sick of stout? Switch things up in favor of the strong stuff with a guided tour and whiskey tasting at the Jameson Distillery Bow St.

Continue by bus to Kilkenny a small city full of Irish charm, medieval architecture, and the most iconic ale in the country. Get ready to eat, drink, drink again, and be very merry.

  • Watch the emerald hills roll along as you head from city to countryside.
  • Arrive in Kilkenny and check in to your accommodation.
  • Join a local guide for a walking tour of Kilkenny and "The Medieval Mile,” featuring 14th-century castles, inns, and towers.
  • Raise a glass of Smithwick’s, Ireland’s best red ale that has been brewed since 1710.

Kilkenny Design Centre: Buy yourself something nice at the Kilkenny Design Centre. Here you can find handcrafted, artisanal gifts from all over the country. It’s like Etsy, but you can touch stuff before you buy. Bridie's General Store: From the outside, Bridie’s General Store looks like an old-fashioned store to buy groceries or souvenirs. And it is. But continue to the back and find a full service pub (indoor and outdoor seating). Talk about a winning combination. Kilkenny Castle: We promised you medieval architecture, and Kilkenny Castle delivered. Originally built in 1195, the castle has had a full makeover, and is open to the public for guided tours of its stunning interior and gardens.

Shamrock shake things up as you leave Kilkenny behind for the quintessential Irish countryside of County Kerry’s rolling hills, tranquil lakes, and plenty of sheep. On the way, stop at the famed Blarney Castle to kiss the Blarney Stone.

  • Board your private bus from Kilkenny to County Kerry, taking in the pristine Irish countryside along the way.
  • Stretch your legs—and your lips—at Blarney Castle. Legend has it that those who smooch the namesake stone are bestowed with that iconic Irish charm: the gift of gab.
  • Continue on to County Kerry and enjoy some free time to hit the pubs in the evening.
  • Enjoy an included dinner with your group.

County Kerry Pubs: County Kerry is known for its raucous pub scene. Locals and visitors alike drink and sing with the bar band well into the wee hours of morning. Irish Cuisine: The Irish know comfort food. Try the shepherd’s pie, corned beef & cabbage, or Guinness beef stew.

Clear your camera roll and prepare to become Instagram famous as you traverse the must-see Ring of Kerry, stopping at each amazing panoramic vista, castle, or ocean view.

  • Encounter magnificent views of the Atlantic Ocean, the Lakes of Killarney, Macgillycuddy’s Reeks, and more.
  • Pick your jaw off the floor after a day of unreal views, and head back to County Kerry for some nighttime free time.

Irish Whiskey Experience: The Irish Whiskey Experience in Killarney is the perfect masterclass for aficionados and new-comers alike. Buy a ticket and sign up for a class of your choice—from taste-testings to cheese plate pairings. Killarney National Park: Need more outdoors time? Take visit to the wondrous expanse of Killarney National Park. Where else can you find mountains, castles, woodlands, and waterfalls all in one place?

You’re off to Galway, a city famous for live music, street performers, and art shows. On the way, stop at the Cliffs of Moher for breathtaking views of the coastline.

  • Gawk at the Cliffs of Moher—limestone walls of rock that dominate the coast for five miles and rise to staggering heights of 700 feet
  • Arrive in beautiful Galway and take it all in on a walk along the banks of the River Corrib, gaze at the picture perfect Galway Bay, then get stoked for a night out in a new town.

Quay Street: Quay Street is a pub-crawler’s heaven. Pick a starting point, have a pint, and see where it takes you. Buskers: Busking, or street performing, is basically Galway’s favorite pastime. Catch the best fiddle player you’ve ever seen on one corner, and a blazing banjoist on the next.

Raise your glass, here’s to one more rowdy day in the British Isles! We know you’ll make it count. Before heading out for the day, take a moment to reflect on all the Guinness, rolling meadows, hearty food, and  craic  you’ve had. Ready? Go make some memories!

Eyre Square: The end of the rainbow in Galway leads to Eyre Square—a bustling center of shops, cafes, and art, though no known pot of gold sightings—yet. Irish Coffee: Vodka Red Bull’s Irish cousin packs a caffeinated punch of coffee, whiskey, and Bailey’s. Please enjoy responsibly.

Farewell Dinner Share some last laughs and revisit the best moments of the trip at this included farewell dinner with the group.

Take a ferry ride to the Aran Islands, where old traditions and iconic Irish countryside are hanging on strong. Don't miss Dún Aengus, a 2,000-year-old fort with walls that go right to the edge of a cliff high above the sea. Why wait? Save money by booking this optional excursion before your trip departs.

Slán libh, a cháirde! Translation: Goodbye, friends. Your next destination awaits—home. Before you head to the airport, enjoy your last few moments together. Take one more group photo. Grab that final drink. (Fine, maybe a couple of drinks.) But this isn’t goodbye. It’s, “See you later.” The only question is, where?

My tour director Gavin was amazing! He had a million suggestions for food, pubs, activities in all our locations and planned some amazing optional activities for the group as well. Pickled kippers and smoked salmon are popular as well as hearty dishes like Scotch broth (stew of meat and root vegetables) and haggis (a savory pudding of sheep innards). Scotch whisky is a legendary local spirit, and Scottish ales are world-famous.

  • The cost of porterage is included in your tour price, and it is not necessary to tip baggage handlers.
  • You will use the euro in Ireland and the Pound sterling in the United Kingdom on the tour extension.
  • Better rates of exchange are usually available overseas, although it’s worth ordering some currency from your local bank to use when you first arrive.
  • We strongly advise that you take debit/bank cards and credit cards, which can be used to withdraw cash at local banks as needed.
  • You can use most debit/credit cards at ATMs on the international networks Cirrus and Plus, but make sure to check with your home bank about withdrawal fees.
  • International banks and businesses primarily accept debit and credit cards that work with the EMV chip system. If you do not already have at least one debit or credit card with a chip in it, we strongly recommend requesting one from your bank prior to your tour.
  • Plan ahead and bring cash to tip your tour director, local guides, and bus drivers. We also recommend keeping coins in the local currency on hand, as some public bathrooms may charge a fee for use.
  • To ensure you feel prepared before traveling on tour, we strongly recommend you download the EF Go Ahead Tours mobile app. The app is free and provides important deadlines, entry requirements, your detailed itinerary, packing tips and more. You can also connect with fellow travelers through the chat feature in the app.
  • Wifi is available in most hotels, though some charges may apply.
  • There is no Wifi on any of the motor coaches.
  • Please contact your mobile service provider for information on roaming charges.
  • Your Tour Director will be leading your group throughout your journey. You will have the same Tour Director throughout your tour.
  • The role of the Tour Director is not only to provide information and context on the destinations you visit, but also to confirm services, coordinate inclusions, prepare each days’ activities and support travelers while on tour. As such, they must focus on the success of the group, and cannot provide individualized assistance to any one traveler.
  • One of the benefits of traveling with EF Go Ahead Tours is our on tour emergency support team.
  • Our extensive network of offices around the world, and our integration of ISO 31000: Risk Management Guidelines, help our dedicated 24/7 Emergency Service teams anticipate and address on-tour challenges in a flexible and iterative way.
  • This team supports travelers and Tour Directors using a combination of extensive training, simulations, incident response planning, and decades of experience to help manage emergencies if they arise, ranging from personal health concerns or injuries to major world events.
  • As needed, On Tour Support can facilitate additional support for travelers on tour, arrange assistance from outside specialists, and liaise with local and international authorities to help solve on-the-ground issues. In addition, the team is dedicated to supporting and facilitating communication between travelers and families in the event of an emergency while on the road or at home.
  • Ireland and the United Kingdom are on Greenwich Mean Time (GMT), which is five hours ahead of Eastern Time (ET).
  • When it’s noon in New York, it’s 5pm on tour.
  • When you travel with EF Go Ahead Tours, you’ll make a positive impact on the places you visit, and the people and animals you meet along the way. That’s because our three core Responsible Travel commitments—protecting the environment, supporting local communities, and promoting animal welfare—are at the heart of every tour we offer.
  • Travel, when done responsibly, can make an enormous socio-economic impact to communities. To maximize your impact, eat at locally owned restaurants and shop at local businesses. Ask your Tour Director to point out restaurants they recommend.
  • Prepare for your trip: be aware of the monetary norms such as tipping and negotiating in a market, learn about the destination’s forms of etiquette, and take some time to learn a few words in the local language.
  • When interacting with locals, make sure to ask people for permission before you take their picture, and approach cultural differences with empathy and an open mind.
  • EF Go Ahead Tours encourages our travelers to limit their waste while on the road, especially single use plastics. You can avoid single use plastics by packing your own toiletries, using electronic documents, and bringing a reusable water bottle and shopping bag. If you need to use plastics or paper, please recycle.
  • Environment: On this tour, we recommend the use of a reusable water bottle, as the local drinking water is safe for travelers. Your Tour Director can provide additional guidance on local water standards. Make sure to bring a reusable water bottle to cut down on single use plastics.
  • Environment: When visiting national parks, reserves, or other protected areas, please do not remove anything from the natural environment or leave any litter. Carry out what you carried in.

We wanted to give you a detailed look at what an EF Ultimate break tour includes. What It’s Actually Like Traveling with EF Ultimate Break

Why we love traveling with ef ultimate break.

We traveled with EF Ultimate Break on the Grand Tour of Europe trip, and it was truly the trip of a lifetime! We love traveling with EF Ultimate Break because it removes so much of the detailed planning required for an international trip. EF Ultimate break also makes it super affordable to travel. Read more about why traveling with EF Ultimate break is worth it in our detailed post !

Are EF Ultimate Break Trips Customizable?

While there are a ton of activities included in a tour with EF ultimate break, there is free time built into the schedule. Thanks to having a full-time tour director, they can offer suggestions and even plan additional activities for the group if people are interested. For the grand tour of Ireland, our tour director planned several activities for us, and some of them were favorite things that we did! So remember this when booking a trip with EF Ultimate Break: having a tour director can open up opportunities to do things you wouldn’t have considered doing on your trip! And when planning your free time ahead, remember that there might be opportunities through your tour director.

How Do I prepare for an EF Ultimate Break Trip?

Before your departure, you will likely not have an hour-by-hour itinerary for each day of your trip. This is one small criticism of EF Ultimate Break that we have. We are BIG planners, so for us, we wanted to have a detailed itinerary before we left home on our trip. Especially because we wanted to plan some popular activities that required timed tickets. In retrospect, we probably should have tried to reach out to our tour director about it earlier. But at the same time, sometimes the tour directors don’t know the exact day’s schedule until a few days before. Sometimes, this was a little frustrating because we had ideas of what we wanted to do during our free time. Still, we weren’t sure of how long we were actually going to have, or when precisely that free time will start, or where we would be physically during the day when free time started (since walking or transit to destinations might be required). But when traveling with a tour group like EF Ultimate break, you have to be adaptable and flexible in this way since you’re on the tour’s schedule. Just something to keep in mind! Because of this, we recommend having several ideas for free time pre-departure so that when the time comes, you can make a decision.

In addition to researching activities for free time, we recommend researching restaurants as well before departure, especially if you’re a foodie or if you have dietary needs. Pam is a vegetarian, so we needed to find restaurants that had items on the menu she could eat. And Kathrine is a huge foodie, so she wanted to try the best local cuisine. So before departure, we put in time to find several restaurant options for each place we traveled. We didn’t want to be wasting time trying to find a restaurant the day off.

EF Ultimate Break App – Predeparture

Before your trip, you will added to your tour group on the EF Ultimate Break app. This is a great place to communicate with others before the trip, so you can plan free time and get to know everyone. Your tour director will also contact you through the app or by email with pre-departure information.

How Much Money Do I Need Per Day on an EF Ultimate Break Tour?

During your trip, you will pay for at least two meals per day, non-included tips, and any non-included activities. We recommend anywhere from $100-$200 per day, depending on how much shopping and additional activities you plan. But usually, $100/day is enough.

We chose the Grand Tour of Ireland because our ancestors are from Ireland, and it’s been on our bucket list for years. 9 Days in Ireland Itinerary – EF Ultimate Break Grand Tour of Ireland

Here is a detailed look at our day-to-day itinerary

Day 1-2 – Dublin

The first two days of the Grand Tour of Ireland are the arrival and settle-in day. Almost all EF Ultimate break trips are like this. The first day is when you fly to your destination, get checked in to your first hotel or hostel, and then have the welcome dinner. Group members will arrive throughout the day. You might arrive early or later in the day, depending on where you are flying from. We arrived early, around 8 AM, in Dublin, so we had the whole day to explore! Which was great but also very tiring because of the jetlag. So, for us, our first day was a tourism day. That evening, we met with our tour director for introductions and then walked to our welcome dinner.

  • Free time
  • Self-guided walking tour – Temple Bar, Penny Bridge, downtown
  • Lunch in Temple Bar
  • Guided tour of Dublin Castle
  • Checked in and met with group

Day 3 – Dublin

Departure Day or continue on to another trip or extend your trip on your own

When booking with EF Ultimate break, you can fly home on the departure day, extend your trip by booking another trip back to back, or continue on your own. We opted to continue on our own with family to explore Northern Ireland. When doing this, we called EF Ultimate break support and told them our new departure date (and where we wanted to fly back from), and they rearranged our flight home. When continuing on your own like this, you are responsible for all other accommodations and travel aside from your flight back to the United States. For anyone not continuing to another trip, day 9 is a departure day where you are shuttled from Galway back to Dublin for your flight home.

Why you should book the Grand Tour of Ireland

The grand tour of Ireland is an excellent trip if you want to immerse yourself in a single country. It was a great way to see most of Ireland’s major attractions and destinations in a single trip. The Grand Tour of Ireland has a good balance of organized and free time. We personally liked how the trip was just over a week, so it didn’t feel too short, but it wasn’t too long away from home either. We appreciated that being only in one country, the bus rides were not long. The longest ride was 3 hours.

EF Ultimate Break’s Grand Tour of Ireland is a fantastic trip if you want to see beautiful landscapes, interact with wonderful people, eat amazing food, and drink good beer and whiskey!

Our happy travellers rave about Ireland

Best trip i’ve ever been on.

Best trip I’ve ever been on! I have so many photos and memories. I’m tempted to go back again. With Approach of course.

We had a ton of fun

My sister and I had the most amazing trip to Ireland. We had an awesome guru, a great tour guide and a great bus driver. They all went out of their way to make it an awesome trip. We had a small group who were great. Everyone got along well we had a ton of fun. I would recommend your company to anyone wanting an all inclusive trip.

The Irish trip was wonderful…excellent guides and driver…top notch! I will certainly check Approaches tours when I take another trip. Thank you!

Very well organized

I liked the green, lush land of Ireland. Driving around the countryside was wonderful and the sites we visited were inspiring. This tour was very well organized the whole time from departure to seeing places and lunches and dinners – all incredible. By the way, our tour Guru was amazing!

Absolutely breathtaking!

Loved seeing the Cliffs of Moher and the Rock of Cashel. Absolutely breathtaking! The Celtic Crystal factory was very interesting and I really enjoyed it. Kelmore Abbey and the grounds were also beautiful.

I enjoyed the west coast! It was so beautiful! The group of people we were travelling with were wonderful and fun-loving. Caroline kept us organized and I really enjoyed conversations with her. Jeremiah was very knowledgeable and funny! He allowed for many unexpected stops, to see and experience things not necessarily in the itinerary. Wow!

Spectacular

Both Andrew and Maggie are excellent with managing the group. Some of the hotels and villages were spectacular. The castles, the countryside, the guided tours… this trip was more than we expected or hoped for. Maggie is a gem – so knowledgeable. Kind and spunky.

Authentically Irish

I loved the drives each day along rural areas (through the country, etc.). It was so great to drive through smaller towns and villages, and see even more than just the bigger cities and tourist attractions. I also loved that we had leisurely sit-down meals as a group every day, not just breakfast together. I also loved the meal location choices, and that many of them were authentically Irish. A personal highlight for me was successfully finding my way around Galway later at night. It meant a lot to me because it was where my grandma and granddad were from.

I fell in love with the beauty of Ireland

The choice of itinerary and stops was superb. I really feel I covered essential Ireland in 14 days. Maggie gave us all the information we needed on the bus before arrival at the sites to make us ready for our guide. I feel in love with the beauty of Ireland thanks to your tour, staff, and transportation – by the way great drivers! All in all a fabulous experience that I will never forget. How about Africa? Or Iceland! Count me in.

Great choice by Approach

Maggie Griffin was an invaluable asset to your trip. Her knowledge of the area and both countries was amazing. Great choice by Approach to have local guides who know the nuances and history of an area because they’ve lived it. I enjoyed thoroughly the entire tour, not just a few highlights. Andrew had a “can do” attitude and was always with a smile (and sometimes a wink!)

The Book of Kells

The Book of Kells and the university library were incredible. The Rock of Cashel was so interesting and such a beautiful place. The Carrowmore Megalithic Cemetery and the Céide Fields were really something. I had never heard of these. The Giant’s Causeway was a phenomenon not to be missed. Its existence is something that must be seen to be fully appreciated. The Belfast visit and history were extremely interesting as well.

Pleasantly surprised

I didn’t have any expectations, as this was my first tour, but I have been pleasantly surprised at how organized and well-planned everything was! All the excursions were enjoyable for me – obviously, not everyone likes the same thing and that can be difficult to manage but I found every excursion had something great to offer. The Ploughboy show the last evening was my highlight.

Excursions and tours were excellent

Approach Tours’ guide made pretty much everything very interesting. Excursions and tours were excellent. Tour guides – Jerry and the specific area guides were very good, especially Belfast. Overall, excellent. Thank you.

Wonderful group

My top highlights were Dublin Castle… seeing it all lit up, the Titanic Museum, the country, and all the shorelines. Definitely, the nature that we saw rather than the cities. Wonderful group and it was wonderful getting to know new friends.

Excellent tour guide & bus driver

My highlights were sites such as Megalithic Cemetery, Passage Tomb, (London) Derry Wall Tour, etc. Excellent tour guide (Gerry) & bus driver (Heiki). Very sociable/helpful Approach staff. Excellent travel aids. The group made it easy to get to know everyone & adjust schedules when required.

I totally appreciated all they did for us

I enjoyed all aspects of the trip even with all the cool weather. The time spent with Anne, Daniel and Barry was great. I totally appreciated all they did for us. Customer service was first-rate. I am so appreciative of Julie. She was amazing! Made the process seamless and enjoyable. She always had time to reply to my 100 questions and she was always cheerful. She’s a keeper for sure!

I would recommend this trip and Approach tours to anyone.

Our trip to Ireland was extraordinary. Ireland is a wonderful place and I would recommend this trip and Approach tours to anyone. Approach is working very hard to make sure everyone enjoys their time and trip. We even stopped at the dark hedges. The bus driver was excellent and even though it was recommended that busses should not go down the road she did anyway and did a marvellous job turning the bus around. Our guide was also very knowledgeable about his Country and answered all our questions. It was nice having it be all-inclusive, even tips, made it a very easy way to travel. The agenda was not rushed and we were provided some free time to shop or visit pubs as well. Great tour.

Holiday Details

Day one – go westport.

You start the tour travelling by train from Dublin to County Mayo, and a jewel of a town on Ireland’s Wild Atlantic Way – the world’s longest defined coastal touring route. Your accommodation is a short distance from Dublin Heuston station, from where you take the train journey of just over three hours to Westport, in the shadow of Croagh Patrick, Ireland’s holiest mountain. Arriving late afternoon gives you time to get your bearings and perhaps enjoy a drink before dinner in this classic Irish tourist location.

Your Accommodation in Westport

Just couple of minutes away from the station by taxi, your accommodation in Westport is a richly appealing family-owned hotel. You’ll find the warmest of Irish welcomes here from your host and staff and we’re sure you’ll love the recently upgraded rooms, fine breakfast and good dining either in the orangery or the restaurant. There’s also a traditional Irish pub in-house. The hotel’s location at the centre of Westport makes it the perfect place from which to explore this jewel of a town.

Day Two – Getting to Know Westport

With history stretching back around 5000 years – as reflected in the many megalithic monuments on the Clew Bay Archaeological Trail – there’s a wealth of activity and attractions to enjoy in Westport. Perhaps chief among these is historic Westport House and Park, a magnificent 17th century mansion house festooned with period antiques, art and artefacts, easily reached from your B&B on foot via the defined greenway around the edge of town. Westport’s bustling Quay area features quirky shopping and one or two good dining options, while the town of Westport itself contains colourful shops and restaurants, as well as several classic Irish pubs where traditional music can be enjoyed over a few pints of the Black Stuff on any night of the week.

Day Three – Riding the Rails to Galway

After a hearty Irish breakfast, get ready for a wonderful day on the rails, traveling  downwards to the lively city of Galway. The station is just a short walk from your hotel (it’s on the same street) but your host will be happy to arrange a taxi if you wish, for which you’ll be invited to pay directly. Once aboard the train, you can relax in comfort as you wend your way, with wonderful Irish countryside gliding past your window. There’s a change of trains at Athlone and then onwards to the ‘City of Tribes’.

Once in Galway you can leave your bags at the hotel and take some time to explore. Once described as the ‘Venice of the West’ by Irish poet WB Yeats, is a vibrant city with plenty to see and do. Why not take a leisurely stroll along the Salthill Promenade with views of Galway Bay down to the Claddach, the oldest fishing village in Ireland, or you could wander the Victorian Streets, enjoying the numerous shops, bars and restaurants – maybe enjoying a pint whilst listening to some traditional Irish music.

Your Accommodation in Galway

Right on the harbour at the edge of the city centre, your accommodation in Galway is a bright and modern hotel in a winning location. From here, it’s easy to explore the city itself and it’s just a handful of steps from the pier for the ferry to the Aran Islands.

Day Four – To the Aran Islands, Touring with an Engaging Local

Catch the ferry this morning at Galway docks for the crossing to Inis Mór, the largest of the magical Aran Islands. Arriving, you’ll be met by a friendly local guide, and set off on a tour of the island either by Land Rover or horse-drawn carriage (availability depending on your day of arrival).

The three rocky limestone outcrops that make up the Aran Islands are a bastion of traditional language, culture and music, unique in their geology and archaeology and unrivalled in their potent sense of history. Each has its own distinct atmosphere and character, and the dramatic landscapes and endless sea form a backdrop to a labyrinth of meandering stone walls and tiny, tightly packed fields. In between, a network of narrow winding roads and grassy lanes sweep from pristine beaches and craggy shores to the dizzying cliffs that mark the edge of Europe. The islands have lured legions of writers, artists and visitors over the centuries – their enigmatic ancient monuments, early Christian remains, holy wells and historic lighthouses adding to their sense of timelessness and mystery. This serenity makes the islands a precious sanctuary from the rush of modern life and their isolation guarantees their place as a stronghold of traditional culture.

You will return to Galway in the early evening, your ferry taking the scenic route via a close pass by the soaring Cliffs of Moher, reputedly the highest in Europe.

Day Five – Continue Round Ireland by Train to County Clare

It’s just a short, scenic train ride today, so take your time over a leisurely breakfast before setting off for Galway Railway station and boarding your train to Ennis, the county town of County Clare.

In a little over an hour, you’ll be in the ‘Mecca of Irish Traditional Music’, the friendliest of towns, where you’ll find a session in every pub, a smile on every face and the craic on every corner. There’s fine quirky shopping here, too, as well as a growing number of good places to eat and some really superb, authentic Irish pubs. The impressive granite cathedral and its spire loom over the end of McConnell Street, while the fast-flowing River Fergus cuts through town on its way to the Atlantic. We’ll provide all the recommendations you need to make sure you get the very best from your day out in town.

Your Hotel in Ennis

Your hotel in Ennis is a long established and iconic, family owned town hotel, standing proudly in the shadow of the cathedral. Cosy and comfortable rooms, a bustling bar full of locals and tourists alike, a good bistro (do try the seafood chowder with a pint of Guinness) and a terrific fine-dining restaurant, combine with friendly and attentive service to make your stay a memorable one.

Day Six – The Best of County Clare

You’re in for a really special day out today, with a private guided tour around some of the most famous and arresting sights in County Clare. The mysterious rocky landscape of the Burren, the spectacular Cliffs of Moher, including the stupendous views from O’Brien’s Tower, the clifftop walks at Doolin, as well as Doolin Cave, and the world class beach at Lahinch are just a few of the Wild Atlantic Way attractions within easy reach of your hotel, and your carefully chosen guide will ensure you have a fabulous day out.

Day Seven – A Private Road Tour from Clare to Kerry

Get set for another great day on the road, the last of your private guided tours, as our carefully chosen expert guide takes you on a fascinating route from Clare to Killarney in beautiful County Kerry. You’ll skirt the mighty Shannon estuary and the city of Limerick, before cutting southwest through ‘Ireland’s prettiest village’ Adare and continuing onwards to Killarney, with plenty of photo-opportunities along the way.

Your Hotel in Killarney

A warm welcome and impeccable service, along with well appointed rooms and a comfortable restaurant make this a supremely relaxing place to stay. Its convenient location makes the hotel perfectly placed to explore this most charming town and its surroundings.

Day Eight – Out and About in Killarney

The vibrant town of Killarney – ‘the Town in the Park’ – surrounded by beautiful Kerry countryside, is famous for its welcoming atmosphere and convivial hospitality. Perfectly placed on the Ring of Kerry by the three Lakes of Killarney, it’s one of our favourite places to return to time and time again. Enjoy a morning in the company of a Jarvey on one of the town’s famous jaunting cars for a fun trip around beautiful Muckross Park and towards Ross Castle, or take one of the many superb walks that circumnavigate the town. Later, head back to eat at any one of the dozens of fine eateries and to have a browse of the many quirky shops – not forgetting to pop in to a welcoming pub for a pint or two of the Black Stuff.

Day Nine – The Romance of Rail from Killarney to Kinsale

Back on the train today for a scenic journey to the lovely and historic fishing town of Kinsale in County Cork. You’ll take the train from Killarney to Cork City and enjoy a 30 minute road transfer from here to your hotel in Kinsale.

Your Accommodation in Kinsale

On the harbourside in this most vibrant town, your accommodation is an independently-owned guest house filled with local art and hosted by the very friendliest of local families. Enter through the garden to a pleasingly modern interior, decorated in robust colours and always so neat and tidy. Aside from the well-proportioned en-suite rooms, there’s a number of lounging areas, where guests are invited to enjoy endless hot drinks, perhaps while planning  a day or evening out. With some of Kinsale’s best eateries on the doorstep, your stay here is offered on a room-only basis.

Day Ten – Out and About in Kinsale

Today you’ll meet with something of a local legend, with whom to enjoy a gentle stroll around Kinsale. As a lifelong resident of the town and a scholar of its history, your guide is the perfect host to help you uncover the story of this most colourful location, its long history and current context.

Day Eleven – North by Rail to the Titanic City of Belfast

Today you’ll have one of your most fun days on the trains as you make the journey from Cork all the way to Belfast, via Dublin. You’ll be transferred back to Cork City to catch the train to Dublin Heuston, then make a connection on the “Luas” (light rail)  across Dublin to continue your tour of Ireland by train from Connolly Station to Belfast.

Your Hotel in Belfast

Your hotel is a locally owned guesthouse close to the University area and a mere 10 minute walk from the city centre. This AA four star rated accommodation comes highly recommended for offering great value for money and a comfortable base from which to enjoy the city. There is complimentary WiFi in all rooms, a light, airy breakfast room and, within a few minutes’ walk, a host of restaurants and bars to suit all tastes and budgets; as they say in Belfast, “the craic is never far away”.

Day Twelve – Bustling Belfast – a City Transformed

At the head of Belfast Lough, the city is compact and easy to get around, whether by public transport or on foot. Belfast is teeming with a multitude of stylish bars, gourmet restaurants, trendy clubs and some of the best shopping in the UK. Visitors can enjoy traditional Irish music in a local pub or dance the night away to the latest vibes – the choice is yours!

Today you’ll meet a knowledgeable local guide, who will steer you through the history of Belfast, both ancient and trickier modern, with customary Belfast humour.

As the birthplace of the Titanic, Belfast’s industrial heritage has shaped a city steeped in culture, seen at the City Hall, the Ulster Folk and Transport Museum and the city’s many preserved historic buildings. Also, the city’s many parks, gardens and galleries offer a perfect haven to relax. Don’t miss the newly refurbished Ulster Museum; it has an enviable collection of Irish art and the wonderful Girona Exhibition of Spanish Armada gold.

Later, enjoy a visit to the world-class, award-winning Titanic Museum, telling the story of th e liner’s conception, design and build in Belfast and, of course, its fateful maiden voyage.

Day Thirteen – Return Home

Enjoy a final hearty Irish breakfast before transferring back to the Railway Station or airport for your onward journey home.

  • Visit the Guinness Storehouse for a crash course in the history of Ireland’s signature beer. Then, let it all soak in high above Dublin with pints at Gravity Bar.
  • Enter St. Patrick’s Cathedral, the 800-year-old church named after the famous saint.
  • Pass by Trinity College, one of the world’s oldest and most prestigious universities, home to the storied library that inspired Hogwarts’ own.
  • Sample Dublin’s natural beauty and urban escape at Phoenix Park—the largest park in Europe.

  • Walk "The Medieval Mile,” featuring 14th-century castles, inns, and towers.

Before you head to the airport, make sure to take one more group photo and grab that final drink. But this isn’t goodbye because you can always get the gang back together for another trip soon. Or if you’re feeling adventurous, we have a couple ways to keep your vacation going.

Physical Activity Level

This is a high physical activity-level tour. You can expect to be on the move on a regular basis throughout the course of the tour.

Tour Pacing

This is a brisk-paced tour. The pace of a tour itinerary considers how often you’ll switch hotels, the amount of planned daily activities, and how you’ll get from place to place. You can expect:

  • Most days full of included activities (more if you add excursions)
  • Most transportation by motor coach
  • Daily bus time varies and can be lengthy

  • Travelers should be healthy enough to participate in all included walks without assistance.
  • Please Note: Adding optional excursions may increase the total amount of walking on your tour.

Climate Considerations

  • Travelers can expect cool, cloudy, and rainy days throughout the year, with occasional heatwaves in the summer months (June-September).

Physical Activity & Tour Pace Questions

  • Go Ahead Tours and the Tour Director who accompanies your group are unable to provide special mobility or luggage handling assistance to travelers on tour. The responsibility of the Tour Director is to ensure the group enjoys a smooth and informative journey, and they can’t be relied on to provide individualized assistance to any one traveler.
  • This tour moves at a reasonable pace to avoid missing scheduled stops. The rest of the group cannot miss any scheduled activities because of the needs of an individual.
  • Due to the pace and physical activity level of this tour, mobility aids such as wheelchairs or walkers will be difficult to use and are not recommended. Please notify Go Ahead Tours before your departure if you plan to bring these on tour with you.

  • Contact your airline(s) for baggage size and weight restrictions for your flights

  • Travelers need to be prepared to manage their own luggage during ferry transfers. This includes carrying your luggage up/down the boarding ramp, lifting luggage onto racks; and managing crowded spaces with other people and motor vehicles.
  • We recommend packing lightweight, loose-fitting clothing that can be easily layered to accommodate varying temperatures, as well as a light jacket or rainwear.
  • A sturdy pair of walking shoes or sneakers is recommended for sightseeing.

  • Most of our itineraries include headsets used during certain sightseeing tours so travelers can hear their guides or Tour Director. If you use an assisted listening device, such as a hearing aid or cochlear implant, please visit our Help Center for more information or contact our customer experience team. Please note that at this time not all our destinations offer headsets due to supplier limitations.

  • Breakfast each morning is also included at the hotel and is typically buffet style with hot and cold options.
  • Irish pubs serve up hearty lunches, such as the traditional stew of bacon and boiled cabbage. Soda bread is delicious, very filling and served with many meals. Nibble a scone at afternoon tea, with a pat of high-quality butter from County Kerry. Guinness stout is an international sensation, but locals might favor Murphy's, depending on where you are.
  • Dublin has seen something of a culinary revolution, and the city now boasts an impressive array of new restaurants offering exciting cuisine with continental Europe, Asian, and even American influences.
  • Scottish cuisine, on the tour extension, relies on readily available ingredients like game, dairy, and fish, with little use of exotic spices. Pickled kippers and smoked salmon are popular as well as hearty dishes like Scotch broth (stew of meat and root vegetables) and haggis (a savory pudding of sheep innards). Scotch whisky is a legendary local spirit, and Scottish ales are world-famous.
  • At the conclusion of your tour, it is customary to offer your Tour Director and driver a gratuity in local currency. Please keep current exchange rates in mind.
  • We recommend tipping the equivalent of $10-$12USD per person per day for your Tour Director and the equivalent of $3USD per person per day for your driver.
  • If applicable, we also recommend the equivalent of $2USD per local guide.
  • Tips can only be paid in cash.
  • If you are traveling to multiple countries with different currencies and the same Tour Director, ask them what currency they prefer for their tip.
