Sections along the Grand Tour of Switzerland

Grand Tour of Switzerland, Streckenabschnitte, no region, spring, summer, autumn, car

Stage 1: Zurich – Appenzell

The most diverse stage of all – starting in the trendy city of Zurich, you’ll continue on to Zurich’s wine country, the thundering Rhine Falls and on to the historic book and textile city of St. Gallen before ending up in rural Appenzell.

Stage 2: Appenzell – St. Moritz

The stage with the most records – from Europe’s smallest town, Werdenberg, to Switzerland’s oldest city, Chur, and on to the Salginatobel Bridge, Switzerland’s only world monument, before you end up in St. Moritz.

Stage 3: St. Moritz – Bellinzona

Stage with the biggest change in altitude – from Alpine St. Moritz, at 1,822 metres above sea level, the route descends down into the imposing Bellinzona, at around 240 metres above sea level.

Stage 4: Bellinzona – Zermatt

The stage with the most bends – the Tremola snakes its way from Airolo up to the Gotthard Pass. At its most spectacular point, over a length of four kilometres the road climbs a height of 300 metres in 24 hairpin bends, each with its own name.

Stage 5: Zermatt – Lausanne

This is the stage where it’s time to get out – Zermatt is not only known for the Matterhorn, but also for being a car-free village. Visitors must leave their car in Täsch and take the train to Zermatt and back to Täsch, where the journey continues on by car through Valais to Lake Geneva.

Stage 6: Lausanne – Neuchâtel

The stage with the watchmaking tradition – watchmaking and innovation used to play out mainly in Geneva. Watchmaking soon spread across the Jura mountain range to other regions, including Le Sentier and Neuchâtel.

Stage 7: Neuchâtel – Bern

The stage with the most water – from Lake Neuchâtel, the route takes you to Lake Murten, Lake Schiffenen, Lake Gruyère, Lake Thun, Lake Brienz and finally along the Aare River to the capital, Bern.

Stage 8: Bern – Zurich

The stage with the most Swiss history – from Bern, the route leads into the Canton of Uri, the location of the well-known Rütli meadow, where the oath marking the alliance of the three original cantons was sworn in 1291.

Access road: Basel – Neuchâtel

There are around 40 museums in the cultural metropolis of Basel. From here, the access road coasts along the Doubs River to the towns of La Chaux-de-Fonds and Le Locle, both known for their watchmaking traditions. The route ends in Neuchâtel.

Access road: Chiasso – Bellinzona

From Chiasso, the route meanders into the palm tree-lined streets of Lugano, a starting point for excursions to several local mountains. It continues to the historic old town of Locarno and then on to Bellinzona with its castles, which are a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Access road: Geneva – Saint-George

From the cosmopolitan Swiss city of Geneva, where the Jet d’Eau, a 140-metre-high fountain in Lake Geneva, shoots into the sky, the route continues on to Nyon before ending up in Saint-George, which makes up part of the Vaud Jura Park.

The Grand Tour takes you through the entire piano nobile of the palace: in addition to the private apartments of Franz Joseph and Elisabeth, the south-facing reception rooms and the State Apartments you will also get to see the rooms occupied by Maria Theresa.

Fascinating stories from three centuries in three historically important areas of the palace

The Grand Tour supplements the Imperial Tour with the exquisite apartments from the time of Maria Theresa. With their décor largely dominated by chinoiserie and East Asian elements, these rooms are among the most luxurious interiors in the palace. They include the Blue Chinese Salon and the Vieux Laque Room, which was remodelled as a memorial room after the death of Franz I Stephan. A highlight of the tour is the so-called Millions Room, named for its precious rosewood panelling. In the Gobelin Salon you can admire exquisite Brussels tapestries. The tour culminates in the Rich Room, which contains the only surviving state bed of the Viennese court.

Imperial Tour

The Imperial Tour takes in the apartments of Franz Joseph and Elisabeth and the south-facing reception rooms looking out onto the palace gardens. The private apartments of the last imperial couple to reside at Schönbrunn allow you an insight into their lives, particularly into that of the famous Empress Elisabeth, while also giving you an opportunity to admire the 18th and 19th century interiors.

At home with Emperor Franz Joseph and his wife Elisabeth

On the Imperial Tour you’ll first explore the apartments of Franz Joseph, whose private rooms were furnished with an astonishing lack of pomp, and the suite occupied by his famous wife Sisi with its beautiful textile wall hangings and upholstery. Immerse yourself in the extravagant grandeur of the Great Gallery, the exotic charm of the ‘Chinese Cabinets’ and the magnificence of the Hall of Ceremonies.

Please note that while no guided tours are available for the Imperial Tour, free audio guides/printed descriptions are provided.  At the weekend we offer the guided tour "Franz Joseph" through these rooms.

The Imperial Tour is perfect if you’re interested in Franz Joseph and Elisabeth but are on a limited time budget.

State Apartments

As a short highlight tour, the State Apartments give you a compact insight into some of the finest rooms at Schönbrunn Palace. Here you’ll see unique interior ensembles with grand halls and exquisite cabinets, giving you an impression of courtly display at the time of Maria Theresa as well as insights into the monarch’s personal tastes.

The Ceremonial Rooms at the Centre of the Palace

The State Apartments include the Great and Small Galleries with their magnificent stuccowork and frescos. Both rooms formed the festive setting for ceremonial events, balls and private family celebrations from the time of Maria Theresa to the early twentieth century. The ‘Chinese Cabinets’ are an impressive example of Maria Theresa’s love of precious items from East Asia. Large-format paintings provide an impressive record of important events in the reign of the monarch that influenced the course of European politics and were intended to be commemorated for posterity. For reasons of conservation, both of these precious Cabinets can only be viewed through glass doors.

The Gloriette is the crowning glory of the hill behind the palace, making it one of Vienna’s best-loved sights and a sought-after subject for photos. The Gloriette has been used as a viewing platform since the beginning of the nineteenth century, and today visitors can still climb the steps to its roof to enjoy the stunning view.

Forming a fitting finale to the palatial Baroque complex, the Gloriette crowns the hill behind the palace, making it one of Vienna’s best-loved sights and a sought-after subject for photos. The Gloriette has been used as a viewing platform since the beginning of the nineteenth century, and today visitors can still climb the steps to its roof to enjoy the stunning view.

The building consists of a central section designed as a triumphal arch and flanked by round-arched arcaded wings. The flat roof is edged with a balustrade and was used as a viewing platform from the beginning of the nineteenth century. Today visitors can still access the roof via steps to enjoy the stunning view.

The Maze and Labyrinth in the park at Schönbrunn provide fun for the young and young-at-heart! One of the highlights in the Baroque gardens, it’s a fun place to relax.

Fun for young and old alike - Find your way through the Baroque maze in Schönbrunn Palace Park!

The maze was designed around 1720, but by 1892 it had gradually been removed. It was not until 9 September 1999 that the new maze, based on historical models and covering an area of 1,715 m², was finally re-opened.There is a viewing platform at the centre of the maze and two energising harmony stones activated by feng shui masters Jes and Julie Lim. According to feng shui beliefs, if you place your hands on the stones it strengthens the flow of energy and enhances inner harmony.

Discover this playful opportunity for relaxation for young and old.

Privy Garden

The Privy Garden is known in German as the Crown Prince’s Garden, after a suite of rooms was furnished for Crown Prince Rudolf on the ground floor of the palace. The garden contains impressive formal beds laid out in intricate patterns resembling embroidery, together with precious specimens from the citrus collection of the Vienna Federal Gardens authority.

Take a stroll under the shady pergola in the former Privy Garden of the imperial family!

Known as the Crown Prince Garden in German, the Privy Garden was given this name when a suite of rooms was furnished for Crown Prince Rudolf on the ground floor along this side of the palace around 1870. In the summer months the garden hosts precious specimens from the citrus collection of the Vienna Federal Gardens authority.

The elevated section of the Privy Garden (called the Garden above the Cellar) is notable for its Baroque design, with four parterre flower beds in designs edged with gravel. This part of the garden is bounded by a pergola with four wooden trellis pavilions. The original fifth pavilion has been replaced with a modern viewing pavilion from which you can look down on the colourful patterns of the formal beds.

Lying immediately along the east façade of the palace, the Privy Garden is part of the imperial family’s private gardens on the Meidling side of the park.

Orangery Garden

The Orangery Garden at Schönbrunn allows fascinating insights into European horticulture. Let precious exotic plants like pomegranates, olive trees and myrtles beguile your senses!

Visit the Orangery and discover where rare exotic plants spend the summer and winter!

Built by Nicolaus Pacassi around 1754, the Orangery at Schönbrunn measures 189 metres by ten metres, making it the largest Baroque orangery in Europe after Versailles. The western section of the Orangery still serves as overwintering quarters for exotic plants. In the summer months – as soon as weather conditions permit – these plants are taken out and distributed around the park at Schönbrunn.

Take a look inside this imposing building and note in particular the original hypocaust heating, which is still in operation and ensures a constant temperature of approximately 10º Celsius in winter.

Let precious exotic plants like pomegranates, olive trees and myrtles beguile your senses in the Orangery Garden while you enjoy a brief survey of the beginnings of European horticulture.

Children´s Museum Schönbrunn Palace

Here you can learn lots of interesting facts about the everyday life of the imperial children. How did they dress? How did they greet the emperor and empress?

In the Children’s Museum at Schönbrunn Palace there are loads of things to discover about the everyday life of the imperial children:

World Snooker Championship 2024: Draw, dates, results and Crucible schedule as Ronnie O'Sullivan misses out on eighth title

Stuart Bingham ends Ronnie O'Sullivan's hopes of winning record eighth World Snooker Championship; Kyren Wilson, David Gilbert and Jak Jones also through to semi-finals; tournament runs from April 20 to May 6 at The Crucible in Sheffield

Thursday 2 May 2024 23:35, UK

Ronnie O'Sullivan wins a record-equalling seventh world snooker title

The 2024 World Snooker Championship takes place in Sheffield between April 20 and May 6.

Ronnie O'Sullivan won the World Championship in 2022 to equal Stephen Hendry's record of seven Crucible crowns but was knocked out in the quarter-finals by Stuart Bingham.

The Rocket had appeared on a collision course with Judd Trump in the semi-finals, only for Trump to be beaten 13-9 by Welsh qualifier Jack Jones in a shock result.

“Toyoda” Alex…seriously…major problem in your edit style I’d say…hmmmm

Hey Mav, that’s the correct spelling of Akio Toyoda’s name. Thanks.

I’m a big fan of the top gear/grand tour crew. They saved my life in Afghanistan! I was glued to their show which I watched from a bootleg afghan copy! My Platoon mates were rushing to go to chow but I made them wait the ten minutes left to the episode. Those ten minutes were crucial because had we left when my friends asked, we would have been in the cafeteria alongside the 17 soldiers who died in a rocket attack that day. Thanks!!!

Would really like to see the manual turbo pt cruiser on an episode! I’m sure you’d have a blast

Funny stuff, but the constant degrading of America and the American people got old. I quit.

would love to do a series on the worst things someone can do to a car. mods, paint and alike

Amy chance of a special somewhere challenging but with Clarkson Hammond and may touring with Gordon Ramsey geno and Fred

Probably be hysterical
