Greece Cruise Or Land: The Best Mode for Travel

Greece cruise offers scenic views and visits to multiple islands, while the land tour highlights mainland cultural sites and historical landmarks. Both options provide a chance to immerse in Greek history and experience its beauty.

Evili Kesoglou, a former tour Guide from Didymoteicho, Greece has given us a detailed insight into traveling to Greece in our podcast. From her expert opinion and experience, Trip Pursuit has prepared this article to make your travel easier.

So, what is the best way to travel there, the Greece cruise or land ?

Land-based holidays in Greece offer more flexibility and in-depth exploration, while cruises provide an all-inclusive, multi-destination experience. Cruises offer convenience and comprehensive packages, while land-based holidays need independent transportation and accommodation arrangements. Based on various tourist seasons in Greece, cruises are available from April to October, but it’s more appropriate to visit by land during winter.

Greece offers both land-based and cruise holidays, each offering unique experiences and advantages. Let’s learn more about it in this article.

Greece Cruise Or Land: Detailed Comparison

Here is an in-depth comparison between Greece Cruise and Greece Land-based holidays.

For natural sightseeing and island visits, a cruise tour in Greece is better while a land tour is for historic and architectural sightseeing.

You see, Greece has more than 200 islands, so cruises are a good option to choose to visit the islands. The longer the cruise line tours are, the more islands you can visit overall. In our Itinerary Podcast by Trip Pursuit, our guest, Evili Kesoglou mentions, if your main purpose to visit Greece is island hopping and absorbing the natural scenic destinations, cruise lines can take you to multiple islands within a limited time.

On the other hand, Greece is known for its historic and archeological places. The country has a long history of different eras of people living in it, so the culture is very rich. And there’s a different level of attraction in visiting Greece by land if you consider the mythological aspect.

“At some point, we had too many cultures living in Didymoteicho. We had the Orthodox, we had Muslims, we had people from Armenia, so it’s pretty big”.  Evili Kesoglou

So, if you want to visit Greece for its cultural and architectural immersion, a land-based trip can help you explore better at a slower pace. You can also spend more time on each island if you go by land for an immersive experience.

Sightseeing Experience

While a Greece cruise helps to see destinations on the coast side, a land-based trip allows you to sightsee more places along with the islands.

A Greece cruise offers a more packaged, hassle-free sightseeing experience, whereas a land-based trip allows for a more personalized and immersive experience. Evili mentioned how Greece is very popular for its beaches for its blue-green sea like Halkidiki.

“In the majority of Greece, we have steep or very deep beaches. The beaches in Greece don’t have very fine sand, it’s mostly rocks or little stones but you can get used to it. The water is very clear, even around a big city like Athens, even though big cities are usually polluted. There are many beaches around that area that are very beautiful and clean. Everywhere you’d see different types of beaches, the islands, and the mainland”.  Evili Kesoglou

Through cruise, based on the length of the packages, you can visit Athens, the Aegean Islands, the Ionian Islands, the Saronic Gulf Islands, and the Peloponnese Peninsula. The cruise will make a stop at each destination, and you can explore the historic sites, stunning landscapes, popular villages, and islands.

A cruise offers a more relaxed, stress-free trip with all-inclusive meals and entertainment, while land-based trips offer more flexibility to plan your own adventure and outdoor activities. A land-based trip will help you explore more places like Meteora and Delphi along with the destinations above.

You can explore the mainland more extensively, along with its mountain scenery, rock formations, ancient ruins, Greek temples, museums, etc., and relax at its beaches and scenic landscapes.

Evili posited how museums in Greece helped conserve different cultures and history.

“The museum got many artifacts, mostly donations from people. So, we were able to create little corners for different cultures. The artifacts were like the costumes they wore, their everyday attires. We were able to showcase their ways of living, their everyday objects, and all those things.” Evili Kesoglou

Accommodation and Meals

For accommodation and meals, cruises are more convenient as they offer all-inclusive services compared to land-based tours.

On a cruise, you’ll be staying on board the ship, and meals are included in the cost of the cruise. You can upgrade the dining or accommodations in the cruise package. Cruises offer cabins such as –

  • Oceanview cabins,
  • inside cabins,
  • balcony cabins,

These depend on the luxury options.

However, on a land-based trip, you need to find a place to stay and food places to eat. You can choose from a wider range of accommodation options, including hotels, apartments, and villas.

In peak tourist season, the cost of accommodation and meals can be quite high. So, if you require cheaper accommodation , negotiating can be a hassle . Now, if you’re on a budget and if you don’t have a problem with staying in the homes of other people, then Airbnb can be a great option.

“If you live solo in an Airbnb or a hotel I think like 70 euros or 80 Euros would be a good budget for the day”. Evili Kesoglou

On a cruise, depending on the packages and dining options, you can try international and Mediterranean cuisine as well as Greek specialties like gyros, feta cheese, and tzatziki. They have a main dining room, specialty restaurants, snack bar, and cafes as well as buffet options depending on the cruise line and ship.

On the contrary, in Greece land tours, you can set your meals as you wish. If you want you can skip breakfasts and you can even have brunches. Now, brunches aren’t an option in the case of Cruises. So, yeah land tours come with a great degree of freedom when it comes to accommodation and meals.

Itinerary and Excursion

On a land-based trip, you can plan your own itinerary and travel at your own pace, while cruises usually have a pre-planned itinerary.

Based on where you want to visit and how long you want to stay, a land-based tour can be more convenient. It allows you to explore more of the historic places, architecture, and other tourist destinations. You also have the ability to choose your own excursions and activities, potentially leading to a more authentic experience.

Here’s a 7-day land tour itinerary for Greece :

  • Day 1: Athens – Visit Acropolis, Ancient Agora, Plaka, and National Archaeological Museum.
  • Day 2: Athens to Delphi – Visit the Temple of Apollo, Ancient Theater, Delphi Archaeological Museum, and Sanctuary of Athena Pronaia.
  • Day 3: Delphi to Meteora – Visit the monasteries of Meteora and enjoy scenic views.
  • Day 4: Meteora to Thessaloniki – Visit White Tower, Archaeological Museum, Ano Poli neighborhood, Byzantine Walls, and Castles.
  • Day 5: Thessaloniki to Vergina to Pella – Visit Royal Tombs and Archaeological Museum in Vergina, Archaeological Site, and Museum of Pella.
  • Day 6: Pella to Kavala to Philippi to Thessaloniki – Visit Old Town and Castle in Kavala, Ancient Theatre, Forum, and Christian Basilicas in Philippi.
  • Day 7: Thessaloniki to Dion to Athens – Visit Archaeological Site and Museum in Dion, National Garden, and Panathenaic Stadium and enjoy a farewell dinner in Athens.

On the other hand, cruises have a schedule for the destinations they will make stops at and the itinerary is usually fixed. Excursions offered through the cruise line may also be less personalized and of lower quality compared to those arranged independently. These excursions can either be included in the cruise package or available for an extra cost.

There are several 7-day cruise options for Greece, including:

  • Eastern Mediterranean Cruise: This itinerary typically includes stops in Athens, Mykonos, Rhodes, and Santorini, with possible additional stops in Kusadasi (Turkey) and Crete.
  • Aegean Sea Cruise: This itinerary usually includes stops in Athens, Mykonos, Santorini, and the Turkish port of Kusadasi, with possible additional stops in Crete and other Greek islands.
  • Greek Island Cruise: This itinerary focuses on the Cyclades islands and usually includes stops in Athens, Mykonos, Santorini, Crete, and additional islands such as Naxos, Paros, or Ios.
  • Ionian Islands Cruise: This itinerary focuses on the western coast of Greece and includes stops in Athens, Corfu, Kefalonia, Zakynthos, and other islands in the Ionian Sea.
  • Adriatic Sea Cruise: This itinerary usually includes stops in Athens, Corfu, Dubrovnik (Croatia), Kotor (Montenegro), and other ports along the Adriatic coast.

So, based on which places you want to visit, you can decide whether to visit Greece by land or cruise.

Transportation Type

A Greece cruise can be more convenient to visit multiple places at once, while on land-based trips, you need rental cars or public transportation for traveling. However, unlike cruises, on land-based trips, you’ll have room for negotiation.

Greece offers various types of cruise tours for showcasing the beauty and rich history of the country, as well as a unique experience. Based on the luxury level, the cruises can be small or large and you can also choose more destinations in the coastal areas or lesser-known islands and beaches depending on the type of cruise.

Contrarily, if you prefer to have more control over your transportation and itinerary, a land-based trip might be a better option. Greece offers common modes of transportation like public buses, taxis, trains, and ferries.

You can also rent a car from one of the many rental agencies if you want to explore Greece at your own pace. Renting a car is expensive but it will save you the hassle to look for transportation each time you travel from one place to another.

Greece has a well-developed public bus network that covers most of the country. So, public buses are a cheap and convenient way to get around for short distances. Trains are a good option for long-distance travel between major cities and tourist destinations. They are cheaper in comparison, but not as fast as other modes of transportation.

Taxis are also readily available in Greece, and you can find one on the street or at a designated taxi stand. Taxis can be more expensive than public buses, but they offer a more comfortable and convenient way to travel.

Moreover, if you want to explore the Greek islands, you can take a ferry from the mainland to the islands. Ferries are a popular and convenient way to travel, but they can be more expensive than other modes of transportation.

Season and Temperature

Both Greece cruises and land-based trips to Greece can be taken at various times throughout the year, depending on your preferences and the season you choose.

So, what is the best month to cruise the Greek islands ?

The best month to cruise the Greek islands is from April to October, with the peak season being June to August. Some cruise lines offer cruises year-round, so it’s possible to take a cruise in Greece during any season. During this time, cruises offer various packages for tourists.

In the Shoulder Season which is from April to May and September to October, the temperatures are milder and there are fewer tourists. This is a good time to visit through both cruise and land if you are looking for fewer crowds and lower prices. You can still visit the islands, villages, temples, and other historic places during this time of the year.

However, in the low Season during the winter months of November to March, when temperatures are cooler and there is less tourism. This is a good time to visit if you are looking for more peaceful and less crowded destinations. Some sites and attractions may be closed during this time and it may be harder to find cruises during winter due to the sea.

Moreover, the islands are very isolated during the winter, so you won’t really have the proper experience.

“If you decide to visit, for example, the islands in winter, maybe I won’t recommend them. Because you won’t get the cruise ship, the sea won’t allow that. And also, islands tend to be very isolated, and not many people live during the winter, so you’re not going to have the full experience. So, there are different places to visit depending on different times of the year.” Evili Kesoglou

They can be good for a summer trip just like visiting the Aquatica or Typhoon Lagoon . The weather conditions can vary depending on the region you are visiting, so it is best to check local forecasts and plan accordingly.

Luxury Options

Both cruise and land-based tours offer several luxury options with personalized services depending on your itinerary and travel style.

In land-based private tours, you can have your own travel guide, have a customized itinerary matched with your own pace, and enjoy the flexibility of a private tour. For accommodation places, luxury and boutique hotels on historic properties or with contemporary luxury amenities can be an option.

For cruise lines, cruises like the Yachts of Seabourn, Regent Seven Seas, and Silversea offer personalized services for luxury tours. The ship amenities include all-inclusive luxurious accommodations, gourmet dining, and several itineraries to visit Greek islands, and other destinations.

Another way to experience the luxury of Greece is to island-hop and take a cooking class or wine-tasting tour. You can stay at a different luxurious hotel on each island you visit and also try the country’s culinary traditions.

The cost of a cruise may be higher compared to a land-based trip, as it includes meals, entertainment, and transportation between destinations.

A land-based trip may offer more flexibility to choose budget-friendly options for accommodations and activities, but transportation costs may add up. You’ll have more control over your expenses, such as choosing budget-friendly accommodations and dining options.

Here’s a summary table of the estimated cost per person per day for the 7-day land tour itinerary for Greece, based on different budget ranges:

On the other hand, cruise tours can be quite expensive depending on several factors, such as trip duration, cruise ship types, the level of luxury and amenities offered, and the time of year.

Here’s a quick comparison table for the estimated costs of a 7-day Greece cruise based on different itinerary options:

Evili has given us quite an insight into the cost estimation for the Greece cruise tour.

“If you visit Greece during July or August, it’s the most expensive. That’s the active tourist season. If you visit around September, even late September, the sea is still warm and the weather is still nice. It’s hot but not unbearably hot in August and the price is much lower than it used to be. If you want to visit the most tourist places and get a cruise in July or August, places like Santorini, and Mykonos, it’s going to be quite expensive. If you take the same cruise in June or September, the price is going to be lower.” Evili Kesoglou

So, how much is a cruise to Greece ?

On average, a one-week Greek cruise tour per person can cost anywhere from $1,000 to $5,000, while a luxury cruise can cost around $10,000 or more. For budget-friendly cruise trips, smaller ships with fewer amenities, and traveling during the shoulder season can be an option.

For land-based tours, one week can cost anywhere from $1,500 to $3,500 or more per person, depending on the type of tour and the level of luxury. A budget-friendly tour, with basic accommodations, public transportation, and a few organized activities can cost you around $1,500 to $2,500 per person.

For a luxury tour, upscale hotels, private transportation, and a variety of high-end activities and excursions cost more than $3,000 per person.

Greece is generally considered a safe country for tourists so whether touring by cruise or land, you can easily travel around solo or with families.

It’s important to take appropriate safety precautions and protect yourself to ensure a safe and enjoyable trip. When traveling by land, you should stay vigilant of your surroundings and keep your valuables securely stored.

Similarly, for cruise vacations, follow safety guidelines provided by the cruise line. Be aware of the risks of theft and pickpocketing, especially in port areas.

Our guest Evili also agrees, “Greece is a safe country for tourists. We don’t have crazy things going on, but if you provoke the situation, regardless of the place, things are going to happen. But generally, it is a female-friendly place.”

Greece is very female-friendly to travel by cruise or land, but avoid walking alone in poorly lit areas at night or when taking part in shore excursions.

You can enjoy a relaxed and laid-back atmosphere for the cruise nightlife, while the nightlife on land is more vibrant and energetic.

Most cruise ships offer a variety of onboard entertainment options and offer shore excursions to nearby towns and islands where you can explore the local nightlife. Cruise nightlife includes live music, dancing, and shows, as well as bars and lounges for enjoying a drink and socializing with other passengers.

In comparison, Greek cities, such as Athens and Thessaloniki, offer a wide range of nightlife options, including bars, clubs, and tavernas. These cities are known for their lively and bustling atmosphere, with music and dancing often continuing late into the night.

Limitations

Both Greece cruises and land vacations have their own limitations when visiting various destinations.

One of the biggest limitations of Greece cruises is that you have limited time in port between two destinations. During peak season, popular islands like Santorini and Mykonos may be overcrowded. Sometimes cruises may not also stop at certain destinations for bad weather or extreme crowds.

These can limit your time to explore the islands and ports, or completely miss a destination point that you’ve been setting to visit. Most cruises also offer specific itineraries which can be restrictive for travelers who want to explore destinations at their own pace.

Both Greece cruises and land vacations have their own unique benefits and limitations.

However, if you choose to stay on land in Greece, you will need to find accommodation and transportation between destinations. This can be time-consuming and expensive, especially if you’re traveling to multiple destinations or during peak tourist season.

Moreover, English is not widely spoken in Greece, which can make it difficult to communicate with locals when going deeper into the villages and navigating the country.

When answering, “ Do they speak English in Greece ?”, Evili remarked, “Sadly, the more rural areas you visit, the less likely the people are going to speak English there. I think that’s the same for every part of the world. The difference is that even if the people don’t speak English, they still want to help you. There’s the body language as well and it’s universal. So, language is a barrier but it is not a barrier that you can’t cross.”

Which One To Choose: Greece Cruise or Land?

When choosing between a Greece cruise or a land vacation, there are several factors to consider. A Greece cruise offers the convenience of visiting multiple destinations in one trip without having to pack and unpack multiple times. It also often includes meals and entertainment on board. If budget is not an issue, a cruise tour can be perfect for a family of two or more members.

However, a land-based trip in Greece offers more flexibility in terms of itinerary and activities. You can stay longer in the destinations you prefer and have a more immersive experience.

Whether you are a solo traveler or in a group, the land-based trip can be quite adventurous and enjoyable as you can explore even the steeper northern mountains. You can go for a budget trip or a luxury trip, depending on your itinerary; however, a land-based trip will definitely be cheaper than a cruise tour.

The time spent at each destination on the Greece cruise may be limited, and the quality of excursions offered through the cruise line may be lower than those arranged independently on a land-based trip.

Whereas, travel between destinations on land may take more time and require more planning and coordination, and meals and entertainment must be arranged independently.

Ultimately, the choice between a Greece cruise or a land-based trip depends on your personal travel style and preferences. If you enjoy the convenience and ease of a pre-planned itinerary, a cruise might be the way to go. If you prefer a more flexible and personalized trip, a land-based vacation might be a better fit.

What part of Greece is best for a holiday?

Greece offers many stunning destinations for a holiday. Santorini, Mykonos, and Crete are popular for their beaches, villages, and nightlife. The Peloponnese is famous for its ancient sites and natural scenery. The Cyclades and Ionian islands offer charming villages and tranquil beaches. The options are endless, making it difficult to choose just one place for a holiday in Greece.

How long is a cruise from Florida to Greece?

A cruise from Florida to Greece takes approximately 12-14 days, with stops in Europe and perhaps Greek islands. The trip length varies based on the route.

Are Greek Island cruises worth it?

Greek island cruises offer the chance to see multiple destinations and experience Greek culture, with the convenience of traveling from island to island. You will visit stunning beaches, ancient ruins, and picturesque villages, as well as sample local cuisine. Whether a cruise is worth it will depend on personal travel preferences and budget.

So, now that we’re at the end of the Greece cruise or land , it’s important to keep in mind that both Greece cruise or land are unique in their own ways. You can explore many of Greece’s famous attractions and destinations, as well as its culture and history in different ways through both land or cruise.

That’s it from us right now. Trip Pursuit will bring you more about traveling around the world!

17 Reasons Why Cruising The Greek Islands Is My Favorite Way To Island Hop

greece cruise or land

  • Destinations
  • Greek Islands

Seeing Greece, the “Cradle of Civilization,” is an inspiring, bucket-list experience, taking you back centuries to walk in the sands of time. Greece has over 2,000 islands, but only 200 are inhabited. While you can visit Greece via a land tour, island hopping aboard a cruise ship lets you relax and make the most of your valuable travel time and dollars.

Here are some of the reasons I think visiting the Greek Islands on a cruise is the best choice.

Note: I was hosted by Celestyal Cruises , but all opinions are my own.

1. Unpack Once

When you cruise, you board the boat and only unpack once, not in a different hotel on each island. Everything is in one place, and you just sail away. Imagine having to carry your bags up the steep cobbled streets of Santorini ?

If you’re island hopping but not cruising, you have to plan ahead for a hotel on each island, unpacking over and over again. In the high summer season, the room rates are higher and there’s less flexibility.

Celestyal Cruises Crystal

2. Experience Islands Accessible Only By Boat

Many of the smaller, “hidden gem” islands are only accessible by boat, and many of the larger vessels are too big to dock there. That means you may miss spectacular scenery, beaches, and shopping. You could cruise on a private yacht charter, but that’s extremely costly.

3. Fewer Flights

Flying between the other islands is possible, but those charges mount up quickly, especially when you add in the price of taking a taxi back and forth.

4. No Need To Navigate The Ferry System

Trying to navigate an irregular ferry schedule is challenging, and in most cases, a direct route isn’t available. The ferry you want might not run every day, or it could make multiple stops before you get to your destination. A friend spent 8 hours on a ferry to Santorini recently. That means you spend more time on the ferry than you do on the island!

Piraeus, the port of Athens

5. Heavenly Ports O’ Call

My seven-night Cruise began and ended in Piraeus (Athens), followed by port stops in Thessaloniki, Kusadasi, Crete, Rhodes, Santorini, Mykonos, and Milos. For even greater flexibility, Celestyal allows you to board in Thessaloniki or Kusadasi. More on my favorites below.

Suite aboard the Celestyal Crystal

6. Beautiful Staterooms And Suites

My first impression was my good fortune in having been assigned one of Celestyal’s suites, which gave us lots of extra room for relaxing and more than enough drawers and closets, something usually in short supply in other cruise cabins. The suite also entitled us to enjoy their private dining room for breakfast and lunch as well as fresh fruit, appetizers, and desserts delivered to our stateroom throughout the day.

What’s more, I found this smaller ship easy to navigate. With only nine decks, everything was easy to find without getting lost.

Pro Tip: I was told before I cruised that each of the islands is different, with its own history, identity, product, and handicrafts. If you see something you like on a Greek island, buy it. Chances are you won’t find it anywhere else. I saw beautiful lace in the windows in Mykonos, but nowhere else.

Aristotelous Square in Thessaloniki

7. Thessaloniki

Greece’s second largest city.

Our first stop was Thessaloniki, filled with Byzantine, Roman, and Ottoman relics. We chose a Panoramic Tour of the port, and our expert guide took us by the White Tower on the Aegean Sea, the iconic symbol of the island. The Tower served as a fortification, and prison in later years. Near it is a statue of Alexander the Great, the Macedonian leader who ruled in 336 B.C.

We loved the hustle and bustle of Aristotle Square with its open-air cafes, lovely boutiques, and grand hotels, highlighted by exquisite views of the sea. We drove through the mountains to the walled Upper Town for a sweeping panorama with Mount Olympus looming in the background.

The ancient ruins of Ephesus in Kusadasi, Turkey are remarkably well-preserved.

8. Kusadasi

The jewel of turkey.

Kusadasi, a Turkish resort town on the country’s western Aegean coast, was the next port, and the excursion included with our cruise highlighted the ruins of Ancient Ephesus, spanning the third century B.C. Walking through the Hellenistic, Roman, and early Christian relics, we marveled at the amazing structures and marbled streets. Our guide told us the multi-story Library of Celsus stored 12,000 scrolls made with calfskin.

Also impressive was the Great Theatre, which held 24,000 spectators. As a part of our tour, we had a chance to watch a carpet weaving demonstration, starting with the silkworms that created the silk and were woven into gorgeous, intricate patterns.

Oia on Santorini Island

9. Santorini

Where whitewashed, sky-blue domes will enchant you .

You’ve probably seen pictures of Santorini, with its whitewashed houses contrasted by sky blue doors and domes. Those are typically from Oia, the city of buildings carved into lava rock, which is known for its splendid captain’s homes and magnificent sunsets.

A remnant from a caldera and volcanic ash, this island is a joy to explore with its marble stairs and hidden alleyways, all set against the turquoise waters.

We also visited Fira, the capital city, perched high on a hill overlooking the Aegean Sea, and took the cable car back to the tender. For those with more time, there are wine tours, catamaran cruises to catch the sunset, great museums, and outstanding beaches.

Delos is a UNESCO World Heritage Site

10. Mykonos

And its iconic statues at the terrace of the lions.

The excursion to the sacred island of Delos is an archeological site not to be missed. Starting with a delightful 30-minute boat ride, we could see the island come into view. Known as one of the most important mythological and historical sites in Greece — and they’re still digging — this UNESCO World Heritage site boasts Doric temples, houses with mosaics, and an open-air museum.

Delos was considered a holy sanctuary as the birthplace of Apollo and his twin sister, Artemis, during the first millennium. Discover the Temple of Apollo, the House of Dionysus, the Colossus of the Naxians, and the Terrace of the Lions. Mykonos is known as the “Island of the Winds,” which actually feel great on a hot day. It’s also recognized as a party city where the nightlife goes to the wee hours of the morn.

Pro Tip: Delos is open and without shade or amenities. Bring plenty of water , sunscreen, and a hat.

The ancient amphitheater where the Greek sculpture Venus de Milo was discovered.

Where Venus De Milo Was Discovered

This was my favorite island for several reasons. We walked down to Sarakiniko Beach to see the pure white stone sculpted by volcanic eruptions. This impressive natural wonder has an almost other-worldly sense to it, like hiking on the moon.

Go down the inlet to see sunbathers and swimmers snorkeling in the sea caves. Take in the dramatic lunar landscape and snap tons of pictures.

We also stopped at a local bakery to sample their sweets and visited the Mining Museum to trace the island’s famous history of mining obsidian.

But the piece de resistance was seeing the ancient Roman amphitheater where the armless wonder, Venus de Milos, was discovered in 1820. She now resides in the Louvre in Paris.

Experts believe this ancient Greek sculpture was created during the Hellenistic period, between 150 and 125 B.C., and depicts Aphrodite the Greek goddess of love. She is made of Parian marble and stands slightly taller than life-size. Where her arms are is one of the world’s greatest mysteries.

The Acropolis of Athens

Home To The Acropolis Overlooking The City

Perched high, almost above the clouds, stands the Acropolis, a symbol of the once-mighty Greek Empire, built around the fifth century B.C. Imagine living among all of this splendor in your daily life.

On this historical hill stands the renowned Parthenon, dedicated to the goddess Athena, the city’s protector. Walk through the well-preserved ruins and see the Temple of Athena Nike, gorgeous iconic columns, and splendid temples. Be sure to check out the Acropolis Museum next door with its see-through glass floors that let you stand in awe of the structures below.

Pro Tip: Head to the Acropolis and Parthenon early in the morning when the lines aren’t as long and it isn’t as hot. Wheelchair access is available via an elevator.

Our tour also included a stop at the Greek Panathenaic Stadium, where the first modern Olympic Games were held in 1896. One can only imagine the thrilling glory of victory.

We walked through the main plaza, Syntagma Square, with its five-star hotels, central fountain, statues, and the Parliament building. Surrounding us were restaurants, bars, and plenty of souvenir shops, meaning I could bring back loads of baklava, halva, and olive oil.

Beyond these fabulous destinations, after spending a week aboard the Celestyal Crystal , I came to appreciate the following Celestyal cruise-specific Greek island hopping benefits:

13. Don’t Pay Tips Or Gratuities

A Celestyal cruise offers an outstanding value because it’s all-inclusive, meaning it includes your deluxe accommodations, onboard dining, live entertainment, and several shore excursions. Even tips and gratuities are included.

Compare the costs of a cruise to a land tour, and you’ll see why a cruise is much more cost-effective, stress-free, and enjoyable.

14. Celestyal Is An Authentically Greek Outfitter

Celestyal does all the planning for you. With so many islands to choose from, how do you decide where to go? Celestyal is authentically Greek and offers a range of destinations to maximize your experience. Visit the most popular islands without having to worry about how you’ll get there.

15. Greek Culture’s On Board

Celestyal Cruises takes it one step further by offering authentic Greek culture, Greek music, and Greek cuisine to enrich your experience. On-board activities celebrate Greek civilization with Greek folk dancing, Greek language, crafts, and other activities. Cruisers can even enjoy enrichment programs on subjects like Greek mythology.

16. The Best (And Freshest) Greek Food

Celestyal has just partnered with Greek culinary expert Diana Kochilas, author of 18 cookbooks and creator/host of the My Greek Table TV show. Her spectacular onboard restaurant serves a six-course feast featuring the most authentic Greek cuisine and ingredients straight from the islands: homemade bread, the freshest vegetables, succulent seafood, and a Greek Village Cheese Platter to die for.

17. See The Most Greek Islands

On a Celestyal Seven-Night Cruise, you’re in a new port every day — some days even two. There’s no way you could replicate visiting so many islands in such a short space of time.

Upon returning home, our Celestyal cruise and exploration of ancient Greece seemed like a dream. It made me yearn to see more of this exquisite destination.

and welcome to the forum.

3 Islands in 7 days is very rushed. You also need the time it takes to do the transport. It will rather be too little time to do what you like.

If you do island hopping based on DIY you must note the following:

Even if distances between islands don't look far every time you get up and move the best part of one day will be lost from your itinerary (you shall pack\unpack, check out and in of hotels, transport to and from ports, some waiting time in ports, time for embarking\disembarking and the actual time used for the journey).

You will also have to adjust to the ferry schedules departure time. Often there is only one or two ferries daily between the destinations – even in main season.

Also note that 3 nights only equal two full days for the same reasons.

Here is a quote from a post written by a Santorini regular - it should give you an idea of what it is like:

The problem Santorini has is too many tourists arriving by cruise ship and overwhelming the poor cable car below Fira . It can take 36 passengers each way. When you consider that 17,000 landed in one day last year (from memory, could be more), you can imagine the queues.

Add multiple ferries arriving plus planeloads of tourists, it's a busy place. Especially in the small alleyways of Fira and Oia and in Oia at sunset time.

Choosing the Right Cruise for You in Greece

In choosing your cruise, you need to think about what you want to see and at what level of comfort you want to see it.

We recommend you first decide what you want to see. Are you looking to visit the most popular islands -- Mykonos, Santorini, and Rhodes -- or are you interested in places off the beaten path? Whichever it is, you'll want to make sure your itinerary allows you enough time to experience the place or places that take your fancy. Some ships visit a port and spend the full day, while others visit two ports in 1 day, which limits your sightseeing time in each (but gives you more overall visits to different places).

Many Greek islands cruises either begin or end their itineraries elsewhere, often Venice or Istanbul, so you'll have to consider which embarkation and disembarkation points in making your decision.

Greece is also visited by ships as part of European itineraries where Greece is one of several countries visited. Most cruise lines like to give their passengers a bit of variety, which means the Greek isles itinerary you're considering might include a day in Alexandria, Egypt, or Dubrovnik, Croatia. This section focuses on cruises that spend the better part of the itinerary in Greece and Turkey, but there are lots of other options for Mediterranean cruises that include some Greek ports among a more varied lineup.

You'll also want to think about what you want out of the cruise experience. Is the purpose of your cruise to see as much as you can of the islands, or to relax by the ship's pool? And what level of comfort, entertainment, onboard activities, and so forth do you require? Some ships spend a day or more at sea, meaning they don't visit a port at all that day, and while some experienced cruisers enjoy those days the most, treasuring the opportunity they offer for real relaxation, they won't do you much good if your goal is seeing as much of Greece as you can.

Next, consider how long you want to spend cruising the islands -- 3 days, a week, 2 weeks? If you have the time, you may want to consider a cruise tour, which combines a cruise to the islands with a guided tour of important sights on the mainland. This is made easy in Greece with some lines offering cruises of only 3 or 4 days, which you can combine with a land tour into a 1-week vacation, and 1-week cruises you can combine with a land tour to make a 2-week vacation.

Also consider when you want to cruise. Most of the action on the islands takes place in the warmer months, late May through October; traveling in early spring and late fall has its own special charms, including the fact it allows you to avoid the tourist crush (although some visitor facilities may be closed in the off season) and the hottest months (in July and Aug, temperatures can reach 100°F/38°C). For the record, August is the month the islands are most crowded with vacationers (expect beaches, bars, and discos to be either lively or packed, depending on your point of view). April and November are the rainiest months. May and October are relatively problem-free, making them particularly nice times to sail in Greece.

Choosing Your Ship

The onboard experience changes dramatically depending on how many people and amenities you can fit onto your ship. You can choose anything from a 16-deck, 3,000-passenger ship with a three-story restaurant, ice-skating rink, and minigolf course, to a yachtlike ship for 100 or 200 people where the idea of entertainment is an open sun deck, a novel, and an attendant who drops by periodically with a glass of champagne and some jumbo shrimp. Which you choose has a lot to do with your personality and vacation goals.

Megaships & Large Ships -- Cruises aboard these vessels focus as much on onboard activities as they do on their destination. They are floating resorts -- sometimes glitzy -- offering American-style luxury and amenities along with attentive service.

These ships, which tend to be newer, feature Las Vegas-style shows, lavish casinos, big spas and gyms, plenty of bars and restaurants, extravagant meals, and lots of daytime activities from water slides and mini golf to goofy pool-side contests. You or your children can take part in games, contests, cooking lessons, wine tastings, and sports tournaments -- although generally few ethnic Greek activities are offered.

Classic & Midsize Ships -- Ships in this category include older, classic vessels as well as newer ships. Destination is more a focus than on the bigger ships, and itineraries may be very busy, with the ship visiting an island a day, or sometimes two. This leaves little time for onboard daytime activities, although some will be offered. In the Greek market, some of these ships feature Greek crews and cuisine, and service tends to be a big area of focus. Because some of these ships are often sold heavily in the European markets, you may hear many languages spoken onboard. The ships offer a variety of bars and lounges, at least one swimming pool and a small casino, a spa and gym, and plenty of open deck space. Entertainment is generally offered in a main show lounge; some ships show films in their cinemas. Some of the ships in this category fall in the luxury camp and offer upscale restaurants, modern spas and cabins with lavish touches, and big, private balconies; other ships are older and definitely more modest.

Small & Yacht-Like Ships -- These tend to offer a more relaxed pace and may seek itineraries that focus on smaller, alternative ports, which they can get into because of their small size and shallow draft (the amount of ship that rides beneath the waterline). They may offer "soft-adventure" cruise experiences focused on nature- and outdoor-oriented activities; or they may offer an experience more like that of a luxury yacht. Some feature Greek crews and Greek cuisine. On these small ships, there will typically be more interaction with fellow passengers than on larger ships -- there's fewer faces to keep track of. There will be fewer entertainment options compared with the big ships, and there may or may not be a swimming pool, casino, spa, or gym. Both cabins and public rooms range from small and serviceable to large and luxurious, depending on the ship. Some ships are fully engine-powered while others are sailing vessels (though these sails are typically more for show than for power).

In addition to the small ships we mention in depth, you may want to look into even smaller yachts, especially if you're seeking a charter or a truly private yachtlike experience.

Calculating the Cost

Cruises in the Greek islands range from 3 nights to 2 weeks, with starting prices per day ranging from around $100 to more than $800 per person, double occupancy, and going up from there. These days, you can almost always get a rate that's substantially less than brochure and/or cruise-line website prices. Like new-car sticker prices, brochure rates are notoriously inflated, so that's why we've listed rates here from a pair of real travel agents, Sherrie and Charlie Funk, owners of Just Cruisin' Plus (tel. 800/888-0922; www.jcp.travel). Depending on economic conditions and the age-old tenets of supply and demand, you may get a good price, as well a shot at the best cabins, if you book early; alternatively, if you're flexible with the cabin category you might be able to get a good price if you wait until the last minute, when the lines are trying to top up their sailings (cruise ships almost always sail full).

Travel agencies and Web-based agencies, as opposed to booking directly through the cruise lines, will typically offer the best overall deal. Depending on demand, you may snag a two-for-one deal or free airfare or onboard credits or hotel stays. No matter what price you end up paying, rates include three meals a day (with a couple of exceptions, which we've noted in the ship reviews), accommodations, most of the onboard activities and entertainment, and, if you book your airfare through the cruise line, a transfer from the airport to the ship. Some rates even include airfare (the inclusion of airfare is more common on European cruises than Caribbean cruises), and in rare cases the fare may include tips, shore excursions, and/or pre- and/or postcruise hotel stays. Some cruises are packaged as cruise tours, meaning the price includes both hotel stays and land tours. With the exception of a handful of high-end lines, don't expect alcoholic beverages to be included in the rates; almost never included are charges for spa and beauty treatments, Internet access, shore excursions, and tips for the crew.

Port charges can run anywhere from around $60 to upwards of $500 per person, depending on the length of your cruise and which ports you visit. These charges will be part of your total cruise fare, but be aware when you're pricing your cruise that although some lines include these charges in the initial base price, some do not. Government taxes and fees are usually excluded from the base rate but will be assessed when your final payment is due.

Cruise prices are based on two people sharing a cabin. Most lines have single supplement prices for solo passengers who want their own cabin. The "supplement," in this case, goes to the cruise line as their compensation for not getting two passenger fares for the cabin. At the opposite end, most lines offer highly discounted rates for a third or fourth person sharing a cabin with two full-fare passengers.

Seniors may be able to get extra savings on their cruise. Some lines will take 5% off the top for those 55 and over, and the senior rate applies even if the second person in the cabin is younger. Membership in groups such as AARP is not required, but such membership may bring additional savings.

If your package does not include airfare, you might want to consider booking air transportation through the cruise line. While the rates offered by the lines may or may not be as low as you can find on your own, booking through the line allows the cruise company to keep track of you if, for instance, your flight is delayed. In this case, the ship may be able to wait for you, and if it can't wait, it will arrange transportation for you to the next port of call. The cruise lines also negotiate special deals with hotels at port cities if you want to come in a few days before your cruise or stay after it.

In the past several years whenever the price of oil surges, some lines add a fuel surcharge on to your tab, which typically ranges from $5 to $10 per person, per day. Be sure to ask when you book.

Note : This information was accurate when it was published, but can change without notice. Please be sure to confirm all rates and details directly with the companies in question before planning your trip.

Best Greece cruises: Top 5 ships sailing the Greek isles

Ashley Kosciolek

From ancient mythology to wine and olives, there's a lot to love about Greece . There's something magical about the contrast between the deep-blue waters of the Aegean Sea and the ancient ruins and white buildings found on the Greek islands.

The best Greece cruises offer a well-rounded mix of islands and key Greece destinations: Athens for its ruins, Santorini for its blue-roofed churches, Mykonos for its shopping and nightlife, and Rhodes for its palace and charming cobblestone streets. You might even luck out and snag a visit to places like Turkey or Montenegro, too.

If you're not sure which ships to consider, here's a list of the best cruises to Greece for different kinds of travelers.

Best Greek isles cruises for families: Disney Dream

greece cruise or land

Disney Cruise Line is ideal for families. If a Disney cruise to Greece with kids sounds appealing, Disney Dream is the ship that will take you there.

The vessel isn't the line's newest, but it's also not the oldest, and you'll still find plenty to do on board. The 2,500-passenger ship's small size means it's easy to learn your way around. Even better, Disney Dream is typically more affordable than the line's newest vessels.

Dream offers jaw-dropping entertainment and daily character appearances, which means your children likely won't be bored on the ship. Its magical kids clubs feature a replica of Andy's room from "Toy Story" and the Millennium Falcon's cockpit from "Star Wars." (Expect surprise visits from R2-D2 or a squad of stormtroopers.)

Also, Greece is wrapped in tons of ancient history to spark your family's imagination. For example, in Athens, you might choose to take a guided tour of the Acropolis, followed by a "day in the life of an archaeologist" experience, where you'll search for treasures in a faux archaeological dig.

If the kids prefer something sportier, they might enjoy an excursion that takes visitors to the Panathenaic Stadium for a tour and a talk about the first Olympic games of the modern era.

Disney Dream sails five-, seven- and nine-night voyages from $322 per person, per night, for a windowless inside cabin. Some itineraries sail round-trip from Rome, while others cruise one-way between Rome and Barcelona with calls on Athens, Mykonos and other ports in Greece.

Best adults-only Greece cruises for party animals: Resilient Lady

greece cruise or land

If you enjoy a lively megaship party atmosphere but you don't want an environment that's overrun with kids, Virgin Voyages ' Resilient Lady will likely be the best Greece cruise option for you.

Although Virgin's Greece itineraries are pretty standard, its onboard experience is what sets it apart in the region.

The adults-only ship combines a casual vibe with a ramped-up nightlife. You'll find passengers dressed like mermaids, crew dressed like drag queens and performers that more accurately represent a cross-section of real life than those whom you'll find on most other lines' vessels.

As part of what just might be the best entertainment at sea , nighttime shows run the gamut from lounge singers and seemingly impromptu atrium dance parties to secret below-deck visits to the "crew bar" for a drink. There's also Scarlet Night — a rave-like pool-deck dance party where everyone wears red.

If that's not wild enough for you, there's also an app that lets you order Champagne to wherever you are on board, free fitness classes that encourage you to dress up in your '80s best and even a tattoo parlor so you can make some bad decisions.

Resilient Lady sails seven-, 10- and 11-night cruises from Athens, starting at $145 per person, per night, for an inside cabin. The voyages feature a mix of stops in Greece (including Santorini and Rhodes and an overnight in Mykonos), Croatia, Turkey and Montenegro, depending on the specific itinerary you choose.

Best budget-friendly Greece cruises: Rhapsody of the Seas

greece cruise or land

Want to check out Greece but have limited funds? Although you'll have to factor in potentially expensive flights to Europe to board, a voyage on Royal Caribbean 's Explorer of the Seas could be right up your alley.

The vessel is one of Royal Caribbean's oldest ships — it debuted in 2000 — but that doesn't mean you won't find fun onboard activities such as trivia, pool games, nightly theater performances, game shows, dancing and live music.

The best part if you're on a budget is the price. You can snag sailings of six, seven or eight nights from just $85 per person, per night, for an inside cabin. These cruises sail either between Rome and Athens or between Barcelona and Athens, or round-trip from Ravenna (the port for Bologna, Italy). Voyages include calls on Athens, Santorini and Mykonos, as well as ports in Cyprus and Turkey.

Best small-ship luxury Greece cruises: Windstar's Wind Star

greece cruise or land

Windstar Cruises ' namesake, Wind Star, is a 148-passenger masted sailing yacht that offers a special Greek islands experience because it calls on some of the area's smaller ports in addition to Athens.

The ship is great for sailing aficionados. Because of its small size, it can visit smaller ports that larger vessels can't access. (Think Monemvasia, a town carved into rock, and Gythion, where you'll find caves and lovely beaches.)

Also, Wind Star is an upscale ship, which means you'll find elevated dining and service on board. All cabins offer at least one window. When you purchase an all-inclusive fare, Wi-Fi, gratuities and alcohol are rolled into the price.

Among other itineraries, the vessel sails weeklong cruises between Athens and Rome that call on Monemvasia and Gythion in Greece, as well as several ports in Italy. Rates start from $300 per person, per night, for an outside cabin.

Best locally based Greek isles cruises: Celestyal Journey

greece cruise or land

Celestyal Cruises is a line you don't hear about too often, but it's based in Greece, which means it has a unique perspective on Greek island sailings.

If you're looking for a cruise vacation that's full of local Greek flair, check out the brand's Celestyal Journey. The ship isn't new, but it's new to the line. Following an extensive refurbishment, and its Celestyal debut in late 2023, it's the youngest member of the line's fleet.

Holding about 1,200 passengers, Celestyal Journey is small enough that you'll still receive a personalized experience but large enough to offer a multitude of onboard amenities. Enjoy yourself at the spa and fitness center, eight bars, seven restaurants, a chef's table experience and two pools. The ship offers 630 cabins, including 149 balcony cabins, 120 junior suites and 28 full-fledged suite accommodations.

Itineraries offered by Celestyal Journey range from four to 28 nights, departing from either Athens or Thessaloniki. Most voyages include calls on well-known Greek ports like Santorini, Rhodes and Mykonos, while longer sailings also venture to places in Turkey and Montenegro. Prices start from $89 per person, per night, for an inside cabin.

Bottom line

The best cruises to Greece combine a mix of fascinating destinations with a ship that fits your budget and travel style. If you're still unsure which cruise to choose, check with a knowledgeable cruise travel agent who can help you sort through the options.

Greek Isle Beauty

Explore greek isle ports.

Piraeus (Athens), Greece

Step back in time on your cruise to Greece. Visit the Parthenon, the Temple of Athena Nike, and other ancient ruins. Follow your tour with an open-air dinner in the Plaka neighborhood.

Crete (Souda), Greece

On the northwest coast of the island of Crete, Souda beckons with a romantic Venetian harbor, Old Town’s tangle of streets, and a 500-year-old lighthouse.

Katakolon (Olympia), Greece

The region reveals what it means to be Greek: traditions that go back thousands of years, simple but delicious and healthy cuisine, towering mountains, and crystal blue seas.

Mykonos, Greece

Mykonos is a top choice among the glamourous. Chic tavernas with open terraces line the sea and after the sun dips down, the island sizzles with youthful energy.

Kerkira (Corfu), Greece

Come ashore to Corfu on your Greek Islands cruise, a muse for some of history’s most notable writers. Be inspired with a swim in its azure waters or wander verdant, cypress-dotted hills.

Rhodes, Greece

Even without its immense Helios statue, Rhodes remains one of the most-visited Greek islands with its white-sand beaches, glittering coves and fascinating ruins.

Thira (Santorini), Greece

Santorini has a dizzying array of archeological treasures, sun-bleached villages and world-renowned wines. To top it all, it’s home to one of the most beautiful volcanic calderas in the world.

Gythion (Sparta), Greece

Once the port of ancient Sparta, this lovely fishing town draws its name from gi theon, which means “land of the gods” in Greek. It’s the entryway to the rugged, mountainous realm of the Spartans—the fiercely independent people who rejected foreign rule time and time again.

Kavala (Neapolis), Greece

Northern Greece is often overlooked as a Greek Isle cruise destination, and many will not even have heard of the Macedonian port of Kavála. But the city, and the region it opens into, are both picturesque and culturally important, with a history that encompasses classical times as well as the more modern era.

Mytilene, Nisos Lesbos

Lesbos, Greece is well known for olives and ouzo production, and visitors can see evidence of both everywhere. The island's charms extend beyond those pleasures, though: It’s a beautiful place of open plains, sweeping hills, and sandy beaches with views of Turkey across the water.

Pylos, Greece

Pine-covered hills wrap around the lovely town of Pylos (often referred to as Navarino, its Italian name), in the Messenia region of Greece's Peloponnese. Cobblestoned streets lead down to the harbor, where outdoor cafés overlook the bay. This pleasant scene, however, belies a turbulent history.

Day 2: Athens

greece cruise or land

Our guided morning tour takes us to the famed Acropolis, a must-see UNESCO World Heritage site described as the “most striking and complete ancient Greek monumental complex still existing in our times.” We'll see the stunning Parthenon, dedicated to Athena, the Erechtheum with its graceful Porch of Caryatids, and the ruins of the Temple of Zeus before descending the Acropolis for a panoramic drive past the Royal Palace, government buildings and elegant homes of modern Athens. We'll enjoy the afternoon at leisure to explore Athens independently. Consider exploring Plaka, Athen's lively old town which is located within easy walking distance of our hotel.

Day 3: Athens – Mycenae – Nafplio – Olympia

greece cruise or land

Today we take off for a three-day road trip to the classical cities of mainland Greece. We'll visit the wonderfully preserved 2,300-year-old theater of Epidaurus. Next, we'll visit ancient Mycenae, founded by Perseus and built with the help of the mythological Cyclops, or at least that’s what the poets say! Here, we'll see excavations that reveal the splendors vividly described by Homer including the Beehive Tombs, Treasury of Atreus, Lion Gate (Europe’s oldest known monument), the remains of Agamemnon’s Royal Palace, and the impressive fortifications of the Citadel. In Nafplio, a picturesque and romantic city, we'll have time to explore and relax. This afternoon, we'll depart for Olympia, the birthplace of the Olympic Games. We'll enjoy dinner at our hotel this evening after check-in.

Day 4: Olympia – Nafpaktos – Delphi

greece cruise or land

This morning, we'll join a local expert to tour the archaeological site and museum at Olympia, where the games were conceived as a tribute to Hercules, son of Zeus. Day 8 Afternoon Tour

The lovely island of Patmos is a UNESCO World Heritage Monument. Our panoramic excursion begins in the port of Skala, heading to the centre of the island and the capital of Chora. Here we'll see the Monastery of St John the Evangelist and visit the Grotto of the Apocalypse. This is where, according to the biblical account, Jesus spoke to John and told him of the Apocalypse. In the central area of Chora we find the silent windmills which stand sentry-like over the capital. Our tour continues as we head to some of the more desolate landscapes of the island, typical of the Dodecanese. Rocky hills, barren soil and promontories jutting into the sea creating dozens of coves and bays making up an intricate coastline. Here you might reflect on the legend of how the island lay at the bottom of the sea and how Zeus was prevailed upon to allow it to rise from the water.

Cultural journeys and expeditions

Step back in time to ancient Greece and sail to fabulous destinations steeped in legend, lore and sunshine and enjoy lovely sunsets over the Aegean Sea as our cruise blends ancient with modern in a kaleidoscope of discoveries both mythic and epic...

See for yourself what small ship cruising is all about, tauck exclusive – library of celsus dinner, an exclusive special dinner with chamber music at ephesus' library of celsus.

Although the ancient city of Ephesus, in what is now Turkey, was originally built by the Greeks in the 10th century AD, much of the ruins you'll see at the site today date to the city's Roman period – like the famed Library of Celsus, constructed in the 2nd century AD to memorialize a Roman governor of Asia. Only the facade of this remarkable building has survived, but restored and re-erected, it is a stunning example of Roman urban architecture... and the amazing nighttime setting for a Tauck Exclusive, al fresco dinner featuring a chamber music orchestra performance.

Hotel Grande Bretagne

Eternal elegance in athens' ancient heart.

Situated right in the heart of Athens since 1874, the five-star, landmark Hotel Grande Bretagne offers an unrivalled perspective of the Greek capital's mythical history, with breathtaking views of the fabled Acropolis, regal Syntagma Square and the Parliament, lush Lycabettus Hill or the original Olympic Stadium. A favorite of celebrities and dignitaries for more than 140 years, this historic hotel is also within walking distance of exclusive shopping areas, museums and the business district.

From beginning to end, a fabulous vacation and a wonderful experience. The organization, itinerary and ship was superb.

About Booking This Tour

Travel Documents

If you are a U.S. citizen traveling internationally , you will need a passport valid for six months beyond the completion of your Tauck journey for entry into Greece and Turkey. Although Turkey usually requires foreign visitors to obtain a visa in order to enter the country, Tauck guests traveling aboard a ship are part of a validated escorted shore excursion and are thus not required to obtain an individual Turkish visa (regardless of their citizenship). You do not need a visa for Greece.

If you are a citizen of another country traveling internationally , you should contact a consulate or embassy of Greece to determine what travel documentation is required.

International maritime security guidelines require that your passport information be provided to us prior to your embarkation. You need to provide this information to us as soon as you book your cruise or boarding may be denied. Once you board the cruise ship, your passport will be held by the purser until you disembark.

You will be issued a boarding card, which you must present before embarking the ship in each port. This security measure also ensures that only Tauck guests are permitted onboard.

We recommend that you make at least two photocopies of all the travel documents that you bring with you. Include copies of the photo page of your passport that contains the date of issuance, the date of expiration and your citizenship. Secure one set of copies in the safe in your room while traveling and leave one set behind with someone at home who will assist you in the event your documents are misplaced, lost or stolen.

To facilitate Travel Requirements, destinations are increasingly utilizing online forms that require digital proof that you've successfully completed your submission (via an email, QR code, etc.) To ensure smooth travels and peace of mind, we strongly recommend all guests carry a personal smart phone and sign up for international data plans before traveling overseas.

TRAVELING WITH CHILDREN AS A GUARDIAN: If you are traveling as the guardian of a child/children, we strongly suggest that you carry a letter from both parents of the child authorizing emergency treatment in the event of illness or accident. For travel abroad, many foreign countries have specific entry requirements for children under 21 who are traveling internationally without BOTH parents. (These requirements are in response to the increased incidence of children being abducted and taken abroad.) PLEASE NOTE THAT TAUCK IS NOT RESPONSIBLE for the disruption of travel caused by improper documentation for children traveling without both parents.

Travel Requirements For This Tour

Air Information and Luggage Restrictions

AIRFARE: Airfare to and from this destination is not included in the journey cost. If purchasing your air elsewhere, it is very important to provide us with your confirmed arriving and departing flight information no later than 3 weeks before your arrival date. Flight information can be submitted to Tauck (or verified, if you've already provided it) in the My Account section of Tauck.com.

TAUCK AIRPORT TRANSFERS are included at the start and end of the journey between the airport and the Tauck hotel. Airport transfers are available for any pre tour or post tour hotel stays immediately consecutive to the tour, providing flight information is received in the Tauck office no later than three weeks in advance. Details on locating your transfer upon arrival to the tour start city will be included in your final documents.

AIRLINES and CHECKED LUGGAGE: Due to space limitations during your Tauck journey, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one average-size suitcase per person. Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and are free to revise luggage policies without notice. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies. PLEASE NOTE that if you are booked on a tour that includes on-tour flights, the checked luggage weight restrictions for these flights may be lower than the weight restrictions for your international flights.

Special Luggage Restrictions for this Tour

Due to space constraints aboard the Windstar vessel and on motor coaches in Greece and Turkey, we recommend that you limit your hand luggage to one small carry-on, no larger than an average size knapsack, which will easily fit under your seat, as overhead racks are not wide enough to accommodate large bags.

Checked Luggage – General

Due to space restrictions, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one suitcase per person weighing no more than 50 pounds (23 kg) and with overall dimensions (length + width + height) not exceeding 62 inches (158 cm).

Airlines are free to revise luggage policies without notice, and certain airlines have different baggage allowances for different classes of service. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies .

Tauck luggage tags will be provided by your Tauck Director on Day 1 of your itinerary. Please do not attach a Tauck luggage tag to any carry-on items, as the Tauck tags designate luggage that is to be handled and transferred by ground operators and hotel staff during your journey.

Health, Safety and Mobility

HEALTH CONSIDERATIONS

A doctor and limited medical facilities are available onboard. However, if you take special medications, please bring an adequate supply with you; they may not be available onboard. Medical services and all medicines (except acetaminophen, aspirin and anti-nausea pills) dispensed to you by the ship's doctor will be charged to your shipboard account. If you become ill during the voyage and the physician is unable to care for your needs onboard, you will be transferred to medical facilities onshore.

The Windstar cruise ships are registered in the Bahamas. Please check with your health insurance provider to determine whether you are covered while traveling. If you will not be covered under your current policy, we strongly suggest that you arrange for adequate coverage while on tour.

If you have a medical condition that might limit your participation in activities, please consult your physician for pre-departure health advice and notify us as soon as possible, if you have not already done so. We will advise your Tauck Director accordingly.

VACCINATION REQUIREMENTS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

Some of the countries visited on this itinerary may require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against certain diseases in order to enter the country.  These requirements are subject to frequent change as outbreaks occur and subside in different areas, and it is therefore crucial that you obtain the very latest information on entry requirements as you prepare for your journey.

For the most current information, please consult the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) by clicking here  and the World Health Organization (WHO) by clicking here . You may also wish to visit the web sites for the embassies of the countries you will be visiting.  Besides providing details on vaccination requirements, these sites can also provide information on vaccinations that may be recommended (but aren't required) and other potential health issues for which no vaccines are available.

Any decisions relating to your health, of course, should not be based solely on information provided by a web site.  It is critically important that you consult with your personal physician prior to your journey to obtain any required vaccinations and to review any optional recommendations offered by the CDC or other sources.

Please be sure to discuss your journey with your physician at least four to six weeks in advance of your departure, as certain vaccinations take time to become fully effective.  Also, be certain to ask your physician for proof of any vaccinations you receive, and to pack this proof along with your other travel documents in your carry-on luggage (not in your checked luggage).

Researching and complying with vaccination entry requirements for the countries visited on this itinerary is the responsibility of the traveler and not Tauck. Tauck is therefore not responsible for any expenses incurred or disruptions to travel caused by improper or incomplete vaccinations, or by the failure to provide proof of required vaccinations.

If you do not obtain the necessary vaccinations and proper documentation, you may be denied entry into one or more countries, or temporarily quarantined until the necessary vaccinations are administered, or until proper documentation is provided.

To enjoy this cruise, you should be in good health and able to walk reasonable distances, often over unpaved and uneven surfaces. Some of the most memorable sightseeing can only be accomplished on foot.  Many of the sites visited were built in antiquity and have many steps and uneven surfaces. It is important that you wear sturdy, comfortable walking shoes that have already been broken-in. The amount of walking that you choose to do, however, is at your discretion. Additionally, you should be steady on your feet to circumnavigate the decks of the ship while cruising on the Aegean Sea. Some ship-to-shore transportation is by local tender.  Occasionally you may get wet with spray.

PLEASE NOTE:  We regret that this Tauck itinerary cannot accommodate wheelchairs or motorized scooters.  Likewise, we regret that we're unable to provide individual assistance to guests with walking difficulties or other personal needs.  The responsibility of the Tauck Director who accompanies your trip is to ensure that the larger group enjoys a relaxing and informative journey, and he or she cannot be relied upon to provide ongoing individual assistance to any one guest.  Guests requiring such individualized assistance must be accompanied by an able-bodied companion who can provide it.

Your Windstar vessel does not have elevators.

SPECIAL DIETARY REQUESTS

The restaurants, hotels, caterers and numerous other partners we work with all do their best to accommodate special dietary requests from Tauck guests. However, given the diverse nature of those food providers (from small wineries to grand hotels to world-famous restaurants in more than 70 countries worldwide), some of our partners are better able than others to accommodate such requests. We therefore cannot guarantee that all dietary requests can be accommodated at every meal. Also, please note that where dietary requests can be accommodated, choices will frequently be limited.

Smoking is not permitted on the motor coaches or inside the ship, including inside staterooms. Smoking is only permitted on the outer decks in the designated smoking areas. These regulations pertain to e-cigarettes as well.

Bringing the right clothing for your trip is important – we've partnered with Necessary Gear who provide an "easy-to-use, one-stop shop" for your Tauck travel needs, specifically selected for this trip. Click here to visit their site .

Your journey is designed with leisure in mind. Dress for comfort and convenience with a wardrobe that is adaptable and allows for layering.  Most days are spent outside or in transit. Therefore, casual, comfortable, cotton clothing is recommended. Breezy days at sea and cool evenings will require warmer, layered clothing. A jacket and tie are not required for gentlemen aboard ship, but may be preferred or required at some local restaurants.

The "casual elegance" of a small cruise ship is also reflected in the way their guests' dress. We recommend that you wear relaxed and comfortable clothing, as you would at an elegant land resort. For women's daytime wear, we suggest walking shorts, skirts, sarongs, lightweight tops and cover-ups; for evening wear - sun dresses, pants, or informal cocktail attire. For men's daytime wear, we suggest Bermuda shorts, polo shirts, and khaki pants; in the evening - lightweight trousers and short-sleeved dress or polo shirts. No suits or ties are required. Shorts, jeans, and t-shirts are not permitted in the restaurant during the evening.

Valet laundry service is available at the hotel listed on this itinerary. On board the ship, next-day laundry and pressing service is available; dry cleaning services, irons and ironing boards are not available.

Following is a list of recommended items to pack for cruising on the Aegean Sea:

Rainwear, such as a raincoat and rain hat, plus a collapsible umbrella

Short and long-sleeved shirts/tee shirts (for the warmer, summer months extra tee shirts are always a good idea)

Shorts (for summer) and pants for casual daytime wear

Sport coat for men (suggested but not required) and slacks/dress for women for evening wear

Sweater; lightweight for summer, and medium weight for spring/fall

Camera, lenses, chargers, batteries and extra memory cards

Sunscreen and hat

Small flashlight

Insect repellent

Washcloth - not all European hotels provide washcloths, so you may want to bring one along.   A package of pre-moistened towlettes is an excellent alternative.

Travel alarm clock (many hotels do not have clocks in the rooms)

Reusable zipper lock bags or other waterproof bags

Prescription medicines (an adequate supply to last your entire journey), and written copies of your prescriptions from your doctor.  While it may be possible to refill prescriptions during your journey, the availability of refills cannot be guaranteed.  What's more, refilling prescriptions in foreign countries can be difficult and time-consuming.

The Mediterranean and Aegean coasts of Greece and Turkey enjoy long hot dry summers and mild winters. Summer temperatures in Greece and Turkey are tempered by the Etesian northerly wind which blows across the Aegean Sea, and breezes called "meltemia", however, mainland temperatures are often very high. Winters are mild and wet, although rainfall is generally low in most areas.

Greece's Largest Island Is Packed With Ancient History, Gorgeous Resorts, and a Stunning Pink-sand Beach

Get ready for plenty of fun in the Grecian sun.

greece cruise or land

Best Hotels and Resorts

Cities to visit, best things to do, best beaches, best time to visit, how to get there, how to get around.

Gautier Houba/Travel + Leisure

Crete, Greece's largest island, clocks in at more than 3,000 square miles and offers plenty of ancient history, incredible food, and natural beauty to explore. But you don't have to take my word for just how special Crete is.

"I often describe Crete as a compact, island version of California. We have surfing and backcountry skiing in winter. In summer, we have canyon hiking, mountaineering, and, my personal favorite, hidden beaches only accessible by boat. And the shoulder seasons are — chef's kiss — perfection," Anastasia Sotiropulos, a tour guide based in Chania, Crete, shared. "The real treasure of Crete, though, are the people. The farmers, cheesemakers, fishmongers, artists, restaurateurs, winemakers, musicians, and homemakers create unique experiences for those lucky enough to visit this incredible island."

Top 5 Can’t Miss

  • Stay at a hotel with stunning Mediterranean views, like Elounda Bay Palace or Domes of Elounda.
  • Explore the ancient Palace of Knossos.
  • Catch some sun on Elafonissi Beach, one of the world’s most beautiful pink-sand beaches.
  • Wander the streets of Chania’s Old Town to admire Venetian, Turkish, and Greek architecture.
  • Visit during the shoulder season to avoid the hottest temperatures and largest crowds.

Ready to start exploring for yourself? Here's everything you need to know to plan a trip to Crete.

Gautier Houba/Travel + Leisure

Elounda Bay Palace

This luxury hotel has long been beloved for its mix of elegance and charm. The rooms and suites here open up to sweeping views of the azure Mediterranean waters, and the hotel's private beaches ensure you can always find a chair (and an umbrella). Make an appointment at the Chenot Spa, which offers massages, facials, and body treatments using science-forward ingredients and techniques.

Domes of Elounda, Autograph Collection

Looking to stretch out? Domes of Elounda is the place to be. Known for its breathtaking views of the Mediterranean and the historic island of Spinalonga, the resort is home to just suites and villas, which open to fantastic patios with private plunge pools. Yes, this hotel comes with its own spa, but guests can also indulge in an in-room treatment to truly never lift a finger.

Courtesy of Blue Palace, a Luxury Collection Resort & Spa

Blue Palace

Blue Palace was named a Travel + Leisure reader favorite in the 2023 World's Best Awards , and in 2024, it's getting a whole new look. The renowned hotel is reopening as a modernist boutique hotel with just 47 bungalows and suites, all with brand-new interiors and some with private plunge pools. But even if you don't book a room with a pool, that's okay, as the hotel sits just steps from the beach anyway.

Casa Delfino Hotel & Spa

Find yourself in a 17th-century Venetian mansion-turned-boutique hotel at Casa Delfino . The hotel, located in the heart of Chania's Old Town, allows travelers to stay amid the action while also offering a retreat-worthy rooftop garden that comes with sweeping views of the sea. It's a perfect place for families thanks to its one and two-bedroom suites.

A visit to Chania's Old Town is a must, thanks to its charming Venetian, Turkish, and Greek architecture. To make the most of your time in Old Town, book a tour with a guide who can show you all the best sights and all the prime spots to get a great meal.

Get in a little more Venetian architecture at Rethymno Old Town , one of the best-preserved historical districts in Crete. The city is built around the Venetian fortress, which provides fantastic panoramic views from its hilltop location. Don't skip the artisan shops where you can find the perfect souvenir.

No visit to Crete is complete without a visit to its capital, Heraklion . Here, visitors can check out numerous historic sites, the Archaeological Museum mentioned below, and all the city's bustling markets, cafes, and bars. And as a bonus, the Palace of Knossos is just a short drive away.

Explore the Palace of Knossos.

Dive into more than 4,000 years of Greek history at the Palace of Knossos , Crete's most iconic archaeological site. The ancient complex is absolutely massive, and it comes with a gorgeous view of the sea thanks to its position high on the hill. "Crete's most famous archaeological site is the great Minoan Palace of Knossos, the oldest, largest, and most elaborate of these sites," Peter Sommer of Peter Sommer Travels , shared. "In its wide courts, shaded colonnades, and intricate arrangements of room after room, floor after floor, one can really come to grips with a civilization from far back in the Bronze Age, and grapple with questions that are still hotly debated – what did these palaces look like, what were they for, who lived in them, and how did they function?"

Hike the Samaria Gorge.

Outdoor lovers will adore spending a day hiking through the Samaria Gorge, a lengthy hike through Crete's White Mountains. The hike stretches on for nearly 10 miles through ancient cypress and pine forests and the abandoned village of Samaria before ending at the sea. However, the most famous part of the hike has to be the "Gates," where the gorge is just 13 feet apart but is more than 1,500 feet high. Make sure to give yourself plenty of time if you plan to hike the entire trail. The park's official site estimates that it takes about five hours to complete the journey.

Visit the Old Venetian Harbor of Chania.

Take a stroll through the Old Venetian Harbor of Chania and take in all the colors of Greece. Travelers can walk past homes and buildings showcasing Crete's unique melding of history, including all its Venetian, Ottoman, and Greek influences. Shop in its boutiques, grab a frappe in a cafe, view the massive fortress, and dine on plenty of fresh ingredients (hello, Greek salads) at its waterfront restaurants. Just make sure to have your camera ready, as its colorful buildings make for the perfect Instagram backdrop.

Learn something new at the Heraklion Archaeological Museum.

Get an even deeper education on the island's history with a visit to the Heraklion Archaeological Museum , which houses the world's most comprehensive collection of artifacts from the Minoan civilization. Its most famous exhibit is the Phaistos Disc, a clay disc sporting more than 240 symbols that is said to be more than 3,000 years old. As the museum notes, "experts have not yet a definitive conclusion of the contents of the inscription," so maybe you can uncover what it all means during your visit.

Elafonissi Beach

Get ready to step foot on one of the world's most beautiful and romantic beaches, Elafonissi Beach . The stretch of shoreline is well-known for its pink sand — created by millions of crushed seashells —that disappears into shallow, turquoise waters. The beach, which is part of a nature reserve, is an ideal spot for families with small children thanks to the calm waters, but there are also plenty of spots for adults to put down their towels and umbrellas for a quiet day at the beach.

Balos Lagoon

One more brilliant beach to visit is Balos Lagoon , a beach made up of brilliant white sand that's lapped by unbelievably blue water. "One of the most popular must-see places in the Chania region is the Balos Lagoon with hypnotizing turquoise waters and a panoramic landscape," Alonso Marly, a travel expert at Skylux Travel , said. "I suggest visiting the beach early in the morning to experience the lagoon at its most tranquil and skip the tourist crowds."

Find a different style of landscape at Vai Beach , famous for the palm forest lining the coast. Once again, it's a spot where travelers can find warm, sandy beaches and beautiful blue waters, just this time with the bonus of tree shade for the perfect beach snooze.

The best time to visit Crete is from June to August when the weather on the island is at its prime. As WeatherSpark notes, the warmest weather can be found between early June and late September, when the average daily high temperature hits above 79 degrees Fahrenheit. Things get particularly hot in July, when the average temperature hits 84 degrees.

"When it comes to the best times to visit Crete, keep in mind that the island is seasonal, and during winter months, most of its attractions are closed," Marly added. "However, throughout the high season, it is full of life day and night."

But, if you're looking to escape the crowds, try plotting a visit during the island's shoulder seasons, which fall over April to May and September to early October.

"If possible, I recommend visiting the island during the shoulder season when it's not too hot and crowded – from April to June or September through October — to make the most of your authentic Greek holiday, full of sunshine and unforgettable experiences," Marly said.

Crete is accessible via its international airports in Heraklion (Heraklion International Airport, HER) and Chania (Chania International Airport, CHQ). Heraklion is the island's busiest airport, and it is also the second-largest airport in Greece, just behind Athens. Several major airlines fly into the airport, including Emirates, Aegean, RyanAir, EasyJet, and KLM.

For those looking to avoid the airport, there is a ferry option, but be warned: It's a long ride. Travelers can hop aboard a ferry from Piraeus Port in Athens to Heraklion or Chania, but the ride can take between nine and 10 hours.

The best and easiest way to get around Crete is with your own car. Remember, this is Greece's largest island, so if you want to explore more widely, you will need some wheels. There are a ton of rental car companies on the island, including big names like Avis, Budget, and Hertz, all ready to loan you a ride.

Public Transit

Crete also has a robust public bus system that can get you to most points of interest. Just note the buses here tend to move more slowly than cars, but it's also a rather affordable option, with rides starting at just a few euros.

Scooters are also a rather popular mode of transportation here, as they are in almost all of the Greek islands. Visitors do need a valid license to rent scooters and must wear a helmet while riding.

Mediterranean Cruise Ports of Call

Discover some of the world-renowned destinations that await you on a Mediterranean cruise with Princess.

Rooted in Greek mythology, Athens is alive with stories from civilizations of the past. On a cruise to Europe departing from Athens, arrive early to tour the remains of ancient lores — like the Temple of Olympian Zeus and Acropolis — dine at the city’s lively tavernas and admire iconic sculptures bathed in natural light within the Acropolis Museum.

Until it was popularized by the 1992 Olympics, Barcelona was a hidden gem amidst Europe’s diverse landscapes. Now it’s widely recognized for its architectural masterpieces and spirited customs. On European cruises from Barcelona, leave enough time before you depart to visit Park Güell — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — and feel inspired by the colors and unique artistry that lies in the park and throughout the entire city.

As one of the greenest islands in Greece, Corfu is an emerald treasure amidst the colorful Mediterranean landscape. From Paleokastritsa, hike to the mountaintop for unparalleled views of the Ionian Sea. Or get a taste of Corfu when you team up with a famous chef, and handpick local produce that they’ll use to prepare your lunch. Experience it all on a Greek cruise with Princess.

On a Mediterranean cruise to Livorno, travel to Florence or Pisa where artifacts abound. Capture snapshots of the Leaning Tower of Pisa, stop by Michelangelo’s David statue at the Accademia and walk up to the “Gates of Paradise” at the Baptistery. Or explore the countryside and meander through the region’s rolling hills that bear vineyards and green olive groves.

Nestled within Boka Bay lies a medieval gem. Kotor is enrobed in ancient houses, palaces and churches that speak to its 12th-century origins. On a Greek cruise, dine on Montenegrin cuisine in the home of a local chef, appreciate 14th-century Venetian art at St. Tryphon’s Cathedral and taste regional wines along the riviera. Or see another side of the city when you kayak through the tunnels of Lipa Cave.

As the largest port in the Mediterranean, Marseille is the gateway to opportunity. On a Mediterranean cruise, spend the day in Arles, and explore the landscapes that inspired much of Van Gogh’s artwork. Stroll through the MuSaMa, a soap museum, and create your own blend alongside a master soap maker. Or roam the city’s most popular landmark, Notre-Dame de la Garden, a Catholic basilica that overlooks the city.

Famous for its beaches and spirited lifestyle, Mykonos is the heartbeat of Greece. Embark on a jeep safari past the city’s windmills, lighthouses and lakes. Walk past temples and marble-lined sanctuaries in Delos, the birthplace of famous Greek gods. Or soak up a day of relaxation on the beach with the city’s Cycladic architecture as your backdrop — all on a Greek cruise with Princess.

Italy’s capital city is something of a dream. Grand chapels and stone angels line the roads, whispering secrets of Rome’s past. On a cruise to Europe from Rome, arrive early to toss a coin into Trevi Fountain. Legend has it, you’ll be guaranteed return to The Eternal City. Then walk in the footsteps of Emperors at the Colosseum, and receive a blessing from the Pope at St. Peter’s Square.

Santorini is the epitome of Greece. Wander into the welcoming cafes in Oia, a village teeming with whitewashed buildings and blue-domed roofs. Continue to some of the world’s oldest vineyards and taste the bouquet of wines produced on the island, making sure to visit the black-sand beach of Kamari before heading back to your Mediterranean cruise ship.

Why Cruise the Mediterranean

In lands where the culture is as flavorful as the cuisine, the splendor of the Mediterranean speaks for itself.

World-Class Dining

Captivating cuisine

With mouthwatering entrees and confections, the Mediterranean invites you to embark on a gourmet tour through iconic cities. Reawaken your taste buds with Italian classics like pastas, pizzas and gelato. Or fill your plate with gyros, keftethes and baklava on a Greek cruise. From breakfast to dinner and every delectable dessert in between, the best is before you with Princess.

Bold reds and crisp whites

The countryside of Italy and Greece are home to some of the most flavorful wines around the globe. With sun and warm temperatures year-round, vineyards are flourishing with grapes by the harvest season. Sip on Italy’s red wines, or sample Greece’s white blends. From sweet Lambruscos to earthy Bordeauxs, fill up your glass on a Mediterranean cruise with Princess.

Ancient Ruins

Where history comes to life

From towers and temples to cities and shorelines, the Mediterranean is sprinkled with remains of civilizations past. Step back in time on a tour through ancient ruins on a Mediterranean cruise with Princess. Imagine life as a gladiator at the Colosseum, explore Greek mythology at the Parthenon and discover the archeological excavations of Pompeii — a lost city and UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Art Galleries & Museums

Artistic ingenuity abounds

From the treasures on land to the jewels within museums, the Mediterranean is a true work of art. On an Italian cruise, see portraits from the Renaissance period at the Uffizi Museum in Florence, and admire Michelangelo’s masterpieces at the Vatican Museum in Rome. Or walk in the footsteps of celebrated artists that called these regions home — like Picasso and Dali — and allow their work to spark your creativity.

Sun-Kissed Beaches

A vision of natural beauty

Visions of sparkling coasts and crystalline waters welcome you to the Mediterranean. Dip your toes on the black-sand coast of Santorini on a Greek cruise. Head to Salerno to spend the day in Positano relaxing on the white beaches and admiring the pastel houses that decorate the cliffs around you. Or travel to Mykonos with your loved ones and daydream on the city’s long stretch of golden sand and stroll in the sunshine.

Mediterranean excursions

Our award-winning Mediterranean cruise shore excursions bring you to iconic beaches, landmarks and ancient artifacts. See the yacht-lined shores of Kotor while riding on a tuk tuk, an electric rickshaw. Savor the flavors of “Koum Kouat” liqueur, created from Corfu’s exclusive citrus plant. Or stroll along the streets of Dubrovnik’s Old town, one of the most well-preserved medieval cities in the world.

Local connections

From chefs and beverage makers to artists and guides, meet the many personalities that call the Mediterranean home with our Local Connections program. On a Mediterranean cruise, voyage to an olive tree farm just outside of Provence, and join your hosts for a unique olive oil tasting. Or explore the Archaeological Museum of Naples with a local artist, and accompany them for lunch to dive even deeper in Italy’s art scene.

More ashore

Enjoy even more opportunities to experience the colors, cultures and flavors of the Mediterranean with More Ashore late-night departures and overnight stays. Witness the beautiful sunset in Mykonos on a Greek cruise. Sit front-row for a flamenco dance, and savor a paella dinner during an evening in Barcelona. Or stroll the illuminated streets of Genoa with gelato in hand after a traditional Italian dinner.

Curated comfort, world-class entertainment and international flavors await you.

Customizable Itinerary

Athens – athens unwrapped.

Welcome to the city of Athens. If you were able to untie the bow around a present and watch the wrapping fall away this would be what you find underneath. The Acropolis rises over the center of ancient Athens and glistens a subtle orange in the light. The Plaka , one of the oldest and longest consecutively used streets in the city, winds along the foothill. The path is paved with stone. Tradesmen welcome you into their shops with trinkets and sparkly jewelry, some made with bronze, other with silver. Restaurants stretch down the street giving the air a blend of luscious aromas, from crispy filo stuffed with cheese to gorgeous roasted lamb. The lively calls, lovely food, and range of ancient history are almost too much to bear…almost.

What's Included:

Athens – Antiquity at Your Service

Let the wonder of Athens wash over you as you venture deeper into the city’s history, both modern and ancient. Your tour begins once you leave your hotel and journey through the fabulous streets. Along the way you will stand beside the Panathenaic stadium, the first stadium to hold a modern Olympic games in 1896. The marble arena reaches far back from the street, wrapping round the track and giving space for plenty of spectators and fans. You can almost hear the roars of history’s cheers celebrating their country, their favorite runner, or the first javelin record archived.

Collect the jewel of Athenian history by witnessing the sensation of the Acropolis. The entire plateau is paved with marble, harkening back to the city’s Golden Age. The Erechtheion stands to the left of the Parthenon where Caryatids, robed female figures used as architectural support, decorate the temple with grace. An olive tree gives an air of earthen zest to the citadel, a gift from the goddess Athena to the city of her namesake. The Parthenon is one of the most famous temples in history, standing before you like something out of a postcard, almost unreal in its elegance and historical significance. Carvings grace the surrounding metopes of the temple. The porticos are decorated with people and their offerings to Athena. Upon the citadel it feels like you could step back and watch the opulent structures of the city remain just as sturdy and smooth throughout time.

Athens – A Wonderful Day for Exploration

The new day brings another chance to venture through the city at your leisure, finding the nooks and crannies that make Athens such a desirable city to visit. Whether you prefer the vibrant markets of Monastiraki or would rather stroll through the Cyclades neighborhood of Anafiotika, this day is for your whims. The New Acropolis Museum sits lavishly beneath Acropolis Hill with a splendid view of the Parthenon from the third floor. Enter the foyer and stand over the ruins of the ancient city that spread throughout the center of Athens. The large hall that houses busts and statues not only embraces the past but displays its charm and awe within the art that has decorated the past. A bust of Alexander the Great is positioned within the room almost highlighting each strand of hair within the sculpted marble. It is hard to imagine how detailed a sculpture can be, until you take a walk through the Acropolis Museum.

Mykonos – Island Ascension

The antiquity of Athens has been around for thousands of years and will wait for your return to the city but today you will depart for the inspired island of Mykonos. The beaches almost wrap around the entirety of the island like one stretch of ornate sand, where the water sparkles with the opulence of a sapphire. Mykonos Town gives a classic sense of the whitewashed walls of the Cyclades meandering beside the labyrinthine streets that offer simultaneous charm and trendiness to the day. Mykonos lets you settle in, relax, and enjoy its splendor.

Mykonos – An Ideal Favorite

Once settled onto the shores of Mykonos there is no wonder as to why the island is a favorite for people around the world. Today can be spent wandering along the island at your leisure, but if wandering doesn’t seem to be in the cards then grab a towel and venture to one of the many fabulous beaches that the island has to offer. Perch beneath an umbrella along the perfect sands of Paradise Beach. The calm water kisses the shore. The hot sands shimmer like gold beneath your feet. Beside the boardwalk brings a plethora of rich aromas, from melting cheeses to creamy tzatziki. You could even relax with a cool, sweet drink beneath the shade of a parasol. With the sound of the water in the distance, the icy glass in your hand, your cares melt away as you blissfully watch the day go by.

Mykonos – A Castle in the Clouds

It may not actually be in the clouds but with another day to traverse the sensational island the Castle Panigirakis is not to be missed. The castle overlooks the entirety of Mykonos Town, the white walls wrapping around the coastline and shining against the various shades of blue sea. Vibrant grass blankets the hillside and leads you to the famed stone archway that frames the town and ocean below. The breeze is sweet and cool. A windmill watches over the hillside. It is easy to lose track of time as you look below to the winding streets of town, and beyond to the archipelago created by the islands of Syros, Tinos, and Delos. Sit along the skyline, look into the horizon, and let the dusk roll across the sky.

At Sea – Where Cruisers Cruise

Today you will separate yourself from the land all together as you board your cruise ship and make way to the bordering waters of Turkey. The majesty of the water is alluring, drifting from turquoise to crystal clear to sapphire and back again. Sporadic islands drift by in the distance. The sea is filled with the sweetness of the mist rising from the sea and the wind blowing through your hair. The middle of the Mediterranean allows a sense of serenity to rush over the ship and urge you forward.

Patmos – Wondrous Ancients and Ancient Wonders

Step onto the shores of Kusadasi, a Turkish island that holds the secrets of the best preserved Greek and Roman ruins in Asia Minor. The stronghold was a center for trade amongst the East and the West for centuries. Where once the prominent city stood lay the ruins that now inspire and awe visitors. Mosaics date back to the ancient Greeks, one in particular that displays Medusa, pieced together with colorful tiles to outline the piece. The mythical icon boasts locks of brown hair from which the heads of two snakes peer. At the south end of Domitian Street is the temple of Domitian. Terraces continue to stand showing the original size of the structure as two stories. Marble columns stand in front of the cellar made of brick and sitting along the foothill of the surrounding slope.  There is tangible history that fills you with awe at the stunning remains of the ancient city.

The island of Patmos is known for housing the cave in which St. John the Divine wrote the Book of Revelation. Arrive in the port and explore the island at your leisure. The castle-like structure that looms over town is actually a monastery built over St. John’s cave. Patmos Town sits in whitewashed opulence beneath the monastery, with a sun-kissed sheen under the afternoon sky. The oldest homes of the island were built in the 12th century, the walls painted white and plastered. The walls were built higher than the roofs to discourage climbing, especially in the surge of pirate fears. The delicate perfume of bougainvillea and pastries drift from the square. Each street looks as charming as the last. You almost feel like you have stepped into a storybook because no town could ever be so seamless.

Rhodes – Who Needs the Colossus of Rhodes

The island of Rhodes no longer boasts the colossus that once stood as a symbol of power and prosperity for all who came within viewing distance of the island. However, the history of Rhodes is far greater than one single statue, set deep within the people and the remaining architecture of the city at large. Whether you choose to indulge in a tour or meander through the old town on your own, the gems of the island are far too great to be missed. A visit to the Acropolis of Lindos is filled with illustriousness from a heyday of ancient times. The plateau looks out over the Mediterranean giving a sense of blessing to those leaving the city and a beacon for those returning. The Doric Stoa was once shaped like a great hall of a university, flanked by structural wings. The pillars at the base of the stairs, and the stairs themselves, continue to decorate the Acropolis, giving you a sense of the enormity of the structure in its prime. The façade of Temple of Athena Lindia also continues to stand proud against the backdrop of ruins. Within the temple you can see the spot where the statue of the goddess once stood.

Crete – Castles and Calderas

Journey to the heart of Heraklion, Crete, at your leisure; stroll along its cobbled paths that rise and fall, narrowing and widening between hotels, shops, and restaurants. If you choose you can also visit the famed Knossos Minoan Palace where the infamous Minotaur was held captive. Along the port of Heraklion is the Venetian castle of Koules. The imposing two-story structure surrounds the harbor and once guarded entry to the port. Built by the Venetians, the castle has been restored by various occupiers over the years; however, the structure is no less powerful and inspiring. The cool stones stand at the water’s edge bracing against the rugged sea. Stroll along the stretch of the fortress walls and view the expanse of the Mediterranean as it extends away from Crete.

The latter half of the day brings you to the famous cliffs of Santorini. The whitewashed homes brace the precipice of the crescent shaped island. Once along the ridge of Santorini you can look into the caldera, the afternoon sea clamors against the rock. The volcano’s tip rises in the distance, looking like a tiny island within the beautiful blue sea. Stroll through the town of Fira, the island’s capital, where the panorama of the island will do nothing less than take your breath away. The lighthouse in the distance stands against the sometimes harsh wind of the island. The pleasant streets of the town allow you to stroll at your leisure, where local artesian shops mix with the rich flavors of local restaurants, all with a view of the open world beyond.

Santorini – It Doesn’t End

Today you will transfer to the Santorini airport to begin your journey home. As your  begin to relive your expedition to Greece you can feel the vibrant memories replaying through your head. The sights you’ve seen and the adventures you’ve had will never be taken away and, the best part is, they will never fade away. From the antiquity of Athens to the monastery of Patmos, the mainland to the islands, other holidays may come and go but the wonder of Greece never ends.

Consider extending or customizing this tour.  See the reviews for Greece and Santorini travel agents for additional information and ideas.

Detailed Description

Enjoy your journey into the unparalleled sights of Greece on this 12-day tour through the Mediterranean Sea. The antiquity brings with it a sense of nostalgia for a Golden Age which inspired the whole of Western Civilization. Cruise through the famous islands that combine pristine beaches, fabulous architecture, and some of the most well known ruins of the past. Your time along the shores will bring you not only to the grandeur of Greece, but the magic of its history.

The wonder begins with your arrival in Athens, the city that brought about the Golden Age. Tour through Greece’s past along the ruins of the Acropolis and within the New Acropolis Museum which houses much of the art from the surrounding city. Step onto the cruise ship and venture to Mykonos where the celebrated island brings about the luxuries of beaches and the charm of its town’s cosmopolitan streets. The days are yours to spend them as you wish, where the water is pure and the town has plenty to discover. A day cruising along the Mediterranean will bring you out of Greek waters and into the waters of Turkey.

On the shores of the Turkish island of Kusadasi you will find yourself wandering through the ancient city of Ephesus where the fabled temple of Artemis once stood. Today the ruin is a prized monument to the prosperous trading post it had been. On the island of Patmos you can stroll through town or within the walls of the monastery that commemorates St. John the Divine’s stay when he wrote the Book of Revelations. Travel to Rhodes where the island boasts the grand ruins of the Acropolis of Lindos which rise 400 feet above the sea. In Heraklion you can meander along the fortress built by Venetians during their occupation of the island in the 13th century before coming to the cliff side shores of Santorini. The whitewashed walls and blue roofs bring those famous photo images of Greece into three-dimensional relief. As you depart for home you can rest assured that the wonders of the Mediterranean were not just visited but experienced.
