Top End BMW Motorcycle Adventure Beckons
Do you dream of riding your GS in remote, exotic locations?
If so, the 2014 BMW GS Safari-Enduro might just be your dream getaway! The GS Safari-Enduro is scheduled to depart Darwin on July 13th for eight days of epic adventure riding, finishing in luxurious Palm Cove on the Queensland coast. Covering around 3,200 kilometers, the route takes in many iconic Territory and Top End Queensland locations.
A high level of back-up support on the BMW GS Safari-Enduro means every rider will experience the very scenic and remote terrain with total security and confidence.
Lead riders mark the course with arrows and a daily route sheet and GPS files are provided, so you will always know exactly where you are. A sweep support vehicle, an on-bike technical support rider and an on-bike safari doctor are all on hand to assist riders if required. A support vehicle transports riders’ gear each day, ensuring participants are not burdened with fully loaded bikes.
Riders will “rough” it some nights in their very own BMW Safari bike swag (which they keep), and live it up in hotels when the Safari hits major towns.
There are still a handful of positions available, so don’t delay. All you need is a BMW GS motorcycle – if you don’t own one, hire one! – and you could be heading off on the ride of a lifetime.
Registrations close on Monday 23 June. For more information please visit www.bmwsafari.com

Off the highway and adventure-bound.
The recent 2015 BMW GS Safari was a huge success – as they always are. 200 riders traversed the magnificent off-road terrain between the Blue Mountains National Park in NSW and Bairnsdale on the Victorian coast.
Adventure Rider Magazine has ridden a few GS Safaris, and both the Safari as well as the more off-road-oriented Safari Enduro are highlights of any riding year. In 2015 we were fortunate enough to be invited to the 20th GS Safari in Tasmania, and to say that landmark ride lived up to the BMW GS Safari reputation would be an understatement. As good as the Safari’s reputation may be, the 2014 run through Tassie was a giant ride in every respect.
For 2015 the GS Safari sold fast, flew past and was an absolute blast. Raging through NSW and cruising its way down the Great Dividing Range into Victoria, the Bavarian bravehearts met the challenges head on and, with good-humoured teamwork, arrived at their destination in the high spirits that seem part of every GS Safari. It’s the benchmark for brand-backed owner rides.
A great start
Backed up by a dedicated support team, the BMW Safari riders departed from the heritage-listed Jenolan Caves Village west of Sydney and threaded their way through the Blue Mountains. Riding on lesser-known gravel roads, the course navigated through rolling farmland and forests before riders arrived in Mittagong for a well-earned break.
The following morning, the riders were soon rolling through Kangaroo Valley and running parallel to the coast toward Batemans Bay. Riders were kept honest by some technical terrain, steep trails and boggy mud holes. They were gifted with ideal GS riding conditions that tested both man and machine. The wide range of terrain and more challenging sections rated well with the group, with many saying the second day of the 2015 Safari was their favourite.
Something for Kate
Batemans Bay was the base for two off-road loops on Wednesday’s ride, showcasing the breathtaking countryside between the coast and the lip of the Great Dividing Range. Steady rain made riding very challenging and for some it was their toughest day ever on a bike.
Although challenged by the muddy and slippery conditions, it was an experience which they won’t forget in a hurry.
One of the GS Safari first-timers who rode the tricky conditions was Kate Peck, a BMW Motorrad Ambassador. Kate, who is kept busy with her Myer fashion ambassador and RPM TV hosting duties, absolutely loves bikes and jumped at the chance to join her first GS Safari. In 2015 she completed two BMW Off Road Training courses as well as a California Superbike School course. On the wet Wednesday Kate was pushed to her limits but showed she was up to the task.
“That was awesome!” she screamed when she walked into the Nelligen Café, drenched from top to bottom.
Victoria-ous
With heavy rain falling and more forecast, Thursday’s route was adjusted, but this didn’t dampen the enthusiasm of the group as it wound its way through interesting backroads into Jindabyne.
The final day was an epic run into Bairnsdale that tracked the Snowy River on the Barry Way. With the Snowy River in full flow from the recent rain the scenery was as incredible as the riding. From the lunch stop in the his-toric town of Omeo the route headed south through forests and pine plantations, finally arriving in Bairnsdale.
Miles ahead
As is the custom, the BMW GS Safari wound up with a farewell dinner. It’s a great way to celebrate an amazing week of motorcycling adventure and the making of many friendships.
BMW Motorrad Australia Marketing Manager Miles Davis was on hand to not only see the riders smile at the end of each day, but also to witness many of the first-time GS Safari riders’ improvement throughout the week.
“An important aspect of the BMW GS Safari is the optional rider training,” grinned Miles as we wondered if he’d send his column in time for the next issue. “Two days prior to the kick-off, more than 30 riders signed up at an amazing property at Oberon for the opportunity to brush up on their adventure-riding skills at the pre-Safari Off-Road Training Course.
This training proved invaluable over the week’s riding.
“The 2015 GS Safari was a fantastic event – beautiful Australian countryside was explored with other GS riders in a spirit of adventure and mateship. I can only encourage all GS riders to experience it for themselves,” said Miles, no doubt already looking forward to the 2016 Safari.
The BMW Safari has been running since 1994, with a proven formula for motorcycle fun and adventure.
Adventure Rider Magazine has been lucky enough to ride a couple of the recent GS Safari Enduros, the more challanging off-road version of the GS Safari, and rates them as some of the best rides of each year.
In 2015 the GS Safari was backed by a dedicated support team which included BMW Roadside Assistance by Allianz, who provided the sweep vehicle and Safari Tech Support Team. Europcar also supported the event with trucks for Safari luggage and tyre-support services.
The Safari support group also included medical support, lead riders and a management team to ensure the event ran smoothly and provided riders with maximum support.
The next BMW Safari event is the 2016 TS Safari, which is a road-touring event from March 13-18, running from the Byron Bay area to Jenolan Caves. Full details of all 2016 BMW Safari events (including GS Safari and GS Safari Enduro) are available, along with more information at www.bmwsafari.com.

“Here’s one from our recent Birdsville trip,” roosted Paul Raymond. “I was on the Super Ténéré and ride-buddy Ian was on his V-Strom 650. We did a 3500km round trip from Townsville to Birdsville and back via whatever different tracks we could take. We also met up with some buddies from Goondiwindi and spent our hard-earned at various pubs and fuel stops along the way: Boulia, Bedourie, Birdsville, Longreach and Windorah to name a few!”
George Ciezki started out from Mildura, Victoria, and followed a wet and muddy Darling River track to head outback. He spent three weeks roaming around central Australia. “I just love getting out into the bush and experiencing the amazing creation we have around us,” said George, who looks like he knows how to pack light.

2014 BMW GS Safari-Enduro
The celebrations for the 20th anniversary of the BMW Safari have got off to an action-packed start with 85 riders recently heading across the top of Australia in the 2014 GS Safari-Enduro.
Setting out from Darwin, the group was treated to some incredible riding and scenery and many were challenged with the ever-changing conditions as they made their way to the coast at Palm Cove via Mataranka, Lorella Springs, Hells Gate, Adels Grove, Karumba and Cooktown.
As the safari headed into the outback, on several nights the group spent the night under the stars in a souvenir swag that was specially produced for the event.
The farewell dinner in Palm Cove raised $3500 for the Black Dog Ride charity, with the winning bidder scoring themselves the number one entry on either the BMW TS or GS Safari in Tasmania later this year.
"We first started talking about this remote and exotic ride a few years ago, so it's very satisfying to see it come together so well,” said Miles Davis, the BMW Motorrad Australia Marketing Manager. “The riders were challenged at times and blown away by this part of our amazing country. At the safaris everyone looks after each other, a lot of friendships are made and everyone has a ball.”

Best used cars for $10,000 or less in 2024
L ooking for a great used car but have a limited budget? You're not alone. Cars and trucks are getting pricier with every passing year, and a limited inventory following the ongoing coronavirus pandemic hasn't helped. If you can manage to stretch your budget to $10,000, there are some solid options to choose from in the used marketplace.
We challenged the Autoblog editors to find a great, versatile used car — note, this list is specifically for cars, not trucks or SUVs, which we cover in a separate list — for $10,000 or less, and this is what we came up with. When there are specific models or options to look for, we'll try to explain why it matters. Each entry includes a link to our classified ads, where you can narrow down your choices using your location and sliders for price and mileage. Pay attention to the deal rating to make sure you're getting the best price possible.
If your tastes run closer to the fringe of the automotive segment, take a look at our Future Classic series where we highlight interesting and sometimes forgotten cars from the past. For the rest of us who prefer to stay closer to the mainstream, the options below all boast at least average expected reliability scores (in most cases better-than-average) and were sold in enough numbers that there should be several options near you.
Best used cars for $10,000 or less
2009-2014 acura tsx.
We're kicking the list off with the 2009-2014 Acura TSX simply because we figured alphabetic order is as good as anything else. Our recommendation would be to stick with a four-cylinder engine to maximize practicality and reliability. Honda , which is Acura's parent company, makes excellent four-cylinder engines, and the K24Z3-coded powerplant in the TSX is no exception. The 2.4-liter spins out 201 horsepower and revs very freely, delivering more driving engagement than many of its competitors. It's available with a sweet-shifting manual transmission or, much more commonly, a five-speed automatic.

2006-2011 BMW 3 Series
The BMW 3 Series enjoys a well-earned reputation as the class leader in the small sporty luxury car segment. It's important to be aware that repair and maintenance costs will be higher for a BMW than less premium brands, and it's likely that lower-end models without some desirable bells and whistles may offer a bit more long-term reliability than the higher-end versions. BMW started selling this generation of the 3 Series, internally known as the E90, in 2006 here in the States. Many were sold in sedan and coupe styles along with a smaller number of wagons, and all versions are desirable. A nicely maintained model with BMW's lauded naturally aspirated (non-turbocharged) inline-six engines should fall into the sweet spot.

2014-2015 Chevy Volt
There are a lot of solid practical reasons to consider a used Chevy Volt . First and foremost, it's economical to operate. Drivers who can keep their lead feet in check can expect to get between 25 and 50 miles of all-electric range from GM's Voltec drivetrain, which pairs a gasoline-fueled engine with a powerful electric motor and a battery pack that runs down the center of the vehicle. The EPA rates this version of the Volt at 38 miles of EV driving, and we've managed to beat that figure numerous times. The Volt is quiet and comfortable for four passengers, and there's a decent amount of cargo space behind the back seats. On the downside, while Volt batteries have generally proven quite durable over the years, if one module does go bad, replacement costs can be very expensive.

2013-2016 Ford Fusion
Sedans have fallen out of favor with American buyers as crossovers and SUVs gain popularity. This is reflected in Ford's lineup of vehicles in its home market — sedans and hatchbacks like the Fiesta , Focus and Fusion are no longer offered. Still, Ford sold hundreds of thousands of these attractive midsize sedans over the course of a couple of decades, and their low purchase prices mean they make desirable used vehicles. The second-generation model seen above went on sale for the 2013 model year and ran until production ended in 2020. The Titanium trim level offers pretty much all the goodies a modern driver will expect, and the available 2.0-liter EcoBoost engine's 240 horsepower and 270 pound-feet of torque makes it feel reasonably fun and peppy to drive. The Fusion has average expected reliability, but repair costs should be reasonable for the American automaker.

2008-2012 Honda Accord
You're not likely to come across a best-used-car-buys list and not see an Accord . Honda's stalwart midsize sedan is a fixture on such lists because it's been such a solid vehicle for so many years, and the Accords that fall into this price range were built between 2008 and 2012. If you can find a newer example, it's likely a reasonable choice, too. The sedan is most common, but the Accord Coupe is the enthusiasts' choice, particularly when equipped with Honda's sweet-shifting six-speed manual transmission.
Find a Honda Accord for sale near you
2009-2013 Honda Fit
The second Honda on our list is the automaker's smallest, the Fit . We're not skipping the Honda Civic intentionally, it's an excellent choice. But the Fit offers a surprisingly large cabin due to its unique Magic Seat arrangement, is fun to drive and gets stellar fuel economy. Like most Hondas, it's reliable and feels especially good with its revvy four-cylinder engine paired with a manual transmission. But even with the power-sapping automatic, the Fit remains an excellent choice for someone looking for a small car that's easy to park nearly anywhere.
Find a Honda Fit for sale near you
2007-2010 Lexus GS 350
The Lexus lineup is full of solid options for a used-car buyer looking for a comfortable and reliable vehicle under $10,000. The ES sedan shares a lot of its hard parts with the Toyota Camry and Avalon , including its V6 engines and automatic transmissions. The GS we're suggesting is a different and more interesting animal, with a dedicated platform and a range of six- and eight-cylinder engines powering the rear (or all four on some models) wheels. We're calling out the 2007-2010 GS 350 specifically, but the V8-powered GS 460 (which can do 0-60 in 5.5 seconds) is also a solidly reliable choice. Either way, the solid chassis, luxurious interior (though with an oddly tight rear seat) and quiet ride are all major bonuses at this price range.
Find a Lexus GS for sale near you
2006-2012 Mazda Miata
Surely you're not surprised to see the Miata on this list. Mazda's long-running little sports car is a blast to drive, can be found at reasonable prices all across the United States and is solidly reliable. We're highlighting the third-generation NC model here, but older versions of the car are equally fun to drive, so feel free to cast a wide net when searching for the perfect example. Naturally, a small two-seat convertible isn't going to work as primary transportation for everyone, but if it works for you, expect to have lots of fun behind the wheel.
Find a Mazda Miata for sale near you
2014-2015 Nissan Leaf
The Nissan Leaf is the only fully electric vehicle on this list, but it's a good one for a lot of buyers. It doesn't boast the kind of electrified performance that sets Tesla apart from most of its peers, and its 80-something-mile range won't work for everyone. But if the majority of your driving consists of a daily commute to work with some around-town errands along the way, the Leaf could very well serve your needs with mileage to spare. If you do find yourself shopping for a Leaf, make sure to take it for a test drive and take note of the estimated mileage available with a full battery. Nissan fitted its mass-market EV with a sort of battery health monitor with a series of bars to indicate how much capacity is available, and vehicles treated as kindly as possible may have healthier batteries than cars regularly driven in harsher environments or conditions.
