“We need to champion each other”: Guy Sebastian lends voice to peers

“We need to champion each other”: Guy Sebastian lends voice to peers

Guy Sebastian has an important message for the Australian music industry.

“I was in LA when I found out about Luke [Liang],” recalls Sebastian. “A few days later, when it started to sink in, I was bawling my eyes out.”

The tragedy of Liang’s sudden passing in August 2018 sent shockwaves through much of the music industry. He was 28-years-old. Almost one year later, Sebastian has found the strength and courage to transcribe their friendship into a hit song.

“I wanted something to celebrate him because he was so funny. Luke was such a good dude and so fun,” Sebastian tells TMN .

Liang was beloved by all who met him, a talented multi-instrumentalist and member of Sebastian’s band, and now the inspiration behind his brand new single ‘Choir’ – an uplifting anthem that intends to serve as a celebration of life and fond friendships.

“He was a mad Trekkie, a real Star Trek nerd. I think ‘nerd’ just sort of sums him up in every aspect. Every instrument he played he went ‘full nerd’. He was so dedicated, and he just had to be the best at it.”

Sebastian believes the music business has a lot to answer for, pointing to a lack of peer support and opportunities for musicians, songwriters and producers, and lacklustre respect among certain circles for pop music. A deeply rooted problem, that he says, is one cause of the mental health crisis plaguing the music biz.

“The Australian music industry can be very segregating. If you look at LA or even London, people are collaborative, and they champion each other. It’s such a weird attitude here that I think needs to change.

“What inadvertently happens is that people go through this industry as a musician or as an artist or whatever, and they feel like there’s this massive pressure on them to be credible in the eyes of their peers, as opposed to just doing what they love and not worrying about what their peers think.

“There’s just this prejudicial kind of separation within the industry, but that also stems out to the general public and how they digest music. There’s not a lot of championing each other.”

Season 8 TV Ratings

The one-time Australian Idol winner hopes to use his platform as a catalyst for change. Right now he’s on season eight of The Voice Australia , mentoring and coaching the next crop of pop stars ready to be thrust into the public consciousness by a television franchise.

Developing artists is something that comes naturally to the Adelaide-born pop star, a passion that extends beyond the small screen.

“It’s a massive part of what I do, and it’s something I feel passionate about; finding new talent and nurturing new talent and helping them carve a path in the music industry.

“There’s a lot of talent this year on The Voice , some outstanding singers.”

Team Guy are in royally good hands. On Monday (June 10) Sebastian was named on the Queen’s Birthday Honours list . He received an AM for significant service to the music recording industry, and to charitable initiatives.

In support of new single ‘Choir’ – which debuted in the Top 40 of the TMN Hot 100 at #35 last week – the Platinum-selling singer will embark on a capital city tour in September and October.

Sebastian will visit Adelaide’s Festival Theatre on September 6, Perth’s Regal Theatre September 7, Wrestpoint Hobart September 12, Hamer Hall Melbourne September 14, The Star Gold Coast September 21, QPAC Brisbane September 22 and The Star Sydney October 3.

Tickets for his RIDIN’ WITH YOU tour go on sale at 10am on Friday, June 14.

Guy Sebastian tells court how he discovered alleged theft by former manager Titus Day

Australian music star Guy Sebastian's performance fees have been revealed in court as the reality TV judge stepped into the witness box on Wednesday for the first time at a major embezzlement trial.

Sebastian's former manager Titus Day, 49, is on trial in the NSW District Court after he pleaded not guilty to 50 counts of fraudulently embezzling royalty payments, performance fees and ambassadorship fees and 50 alternative charges of larceny or stealing.

Police allege Day, a former celebrity agent to stars such as Sophie Monk, Grant Denyer and Stephanie Rice, embezzled about A$900,000 ($993,000) in royalty, performance and ambassadorship funds Sebastian was entitled to between 2013 and 2020.

Sebastian, a judge on Channel 7's hit reality show The Voice and former Australian Idol winner, claims he discovered the theft when examining bank accounts after the pair had a bitter falling out and parted ways.

During the final part of his opening address, Crown prosecutor David Morters SC told the court that there were "shortfalls" in fund amounts transferred by Day to Sebastian, including the right slice of the A$494,360 ($545,760) the singer earned as a support act for music superstar Taylor Swift's Australian concerts in 2013.

The court was told that Sebastian charged A$49,000 ($54,000) for an Allianz Stadium performance during a British and Irish Lions rugby tour; however, "no moneys were remitted" to Sebastian.

The court was told that in 2017 Sebastian commanded about A$54,000 ($59,600) to perform at a wedding in Jakarta, A$10,000 ($11,040) for a wedding at Sydney's Doltone House, A$66,000 ($72,860) to appear at a McDonald's conference and A$33,000 ($36,400) to perform at a Harvey Norman event.

As part of an arrangement between Day and Sebastian, money paid to the singer would go to Day's management business 6 Degrees.

Day was then tasked with deducting the agreed portion of commission and paying Sebastian the rest of the money owed.

"Mr Sebastian will tell you that the accused made undertakings to him that he [Day] was going to transfer an equity interest in 6 Degrees from as early as August 2013," Morters said.

"He [Day] was going to transfer 10 per cent of the company 6 Degrees to Mr Sebastian in recognition of the importance that Mr Sebastian played in his company."

Morters also revealed Sebastian's wife Jules would be called to give evidence during the trial.

He said she was a client of Day's and "chased payment" from him.

The court was told that she was to be paid A$15,000 ($16,560) but was given A$6403 ($7068).

Day's barrister Dominic Toomey SC told the court the case against his client was "misconceived" and suggested police could have been "seduced by Sebastian's high profile".

"When we dig deeper into the evidence and we go beyond a superficial view of it you will see there is an answer to each charge," Toomey told the jury.

"You might even wonder ultimately whether there was some ulterior purpose on the part of Sebastian and police in the pursuit of criminal charges."

Toomey said Day and Sebastian had been involved in a civil case in the Federal Court when police "unceremoniously" arrested Day and laid the criminal charges.

"In those proceedings in the Federal Court both men claimed that the other owed him money.

"It was in the Federal Court that what was essentially a business dispute ought to have remained."

On Wednesday afternoon Sebastian told the court how he and Day were introduced through Day's wife Courtney, a former Sony music executive.

"Titus said that he was starting a new company … and asked if I would go with him to 6 Degrees," Sebastian said.

"He would refer to me as his foundation client and a client that he needed to start a new company.

"I also needed him."

After Sebastian agreed to end his relationship with his former agency 22 Management, he joined Day's new agency.

"I was right in the middle of releasing music, the Like it Like That album," he said.

"I was signed to Sony Music, I had numerous No. 1 records and I think it was two No. 1 albums at the time, two No. 1 singles, top five, top-10 singles as well.

"It's hard talking about … I was very proud of what I had achieved at that point definitely."

Sebastian told the court that "basically everything" he did professionally was done by Day when the pair worked together.

After the pair parted ways the court was told that Sebastian's new manager sought to set up a fresh royalties agreement with another company.

"Upon doing so there was a discovery I was already signed up to a neighbouring rights company by the name of Premier Muzik," Sebastian told the court.

When shown a copy of the contract with Premier Muzik, Sebastian agreed his signature was on it but said he could not recall signing it.

"There were often times where I would be presented things to sign," he explained.

"It wasn't uncommon for contracts or agreements to be put in front of me and for me to sign. One of the benefits of my manager [Day] was he was a contract lawyer, so I trusted that if he put something in front of me he wouldn't do so unless it was ready to be signed."

Sebastian will return to the witness box on Thursday when the trial continues.

Taylor's latest Guy: Guy Sebastian to support Taylor Swift on Red tour

Taylor Swift's Red Tour of Australia this December just got that bit more exciting, with Guy Sebastian announcing today that he will be the US superstar's support act.

Taylor Swift 's Red Tour of Australia this December just got that bit more exciting, with Guy Sebastian announcing today that he will be the US superstar's support act.

Guy spilled the news on FOX FM's Matt and Jo Show this morning.

"I am part of the Red Tour on Taylor Swift's run of Australia, which is pretty awesome. I actually only found out yesterday!" he said.

"I think yesterday no, the day before. And within, no joke, 15 to 20 minutes I had a journalist who's a mate of mine ring me — Oh, you're doing the Taylor Swift thing?' — so these wheels have moved very fast!"

So did Taylor personally chose the Aussie 'Battle Scars' hit-maker?

"Oh, of course, it's all approved by her and management," Guy said.

Guy hopes the tour will bring him a wider audience.

"I actually just bumped into Ed Sheeran while I was in LA and he was having a ball and I guess for him, it really cracked him in the US — being on Taylor's tour — and I'm hoping that it's really going to crack me here in Australia," he said.

Hasn't he made it here already though? Taylor, can you please reconsider Ed Sheeran and take Guy Sebastian on your US tour instead? Pretty please?

Guy has been touring his Get Along show across Australia over the past few months, finishing up in June.

Taylor kicks off her Australian tour on December 4 in Sydney. For more details and tickets click here .

Some 300 musicians, from Diplo to Nile Rodgers, lobby Congress for ticketing reform

From left, Nile Rodgers, Chappell Roan and Diplo are among the more than 280 musicians who signed a letter to senators in support of concert ticketing reforms.

What do Billie Eilish, Dave Matthews and Diplo have in common?

As of Thursday, they are among the more than 280 popular musicians who have signed a letter urging lawmakers to help reform the concert ticketing system.

Other prominent signatories include Becky G, Duran Duran, Fall Out Boy, Finneas, Graham Nash, Green Day, Nile Rodgers, ODESZA, Chappell Roan, Cyndi Lauper, Indigo Girls, Jason Mraz, Sia, Sylvan Esso and Lorde.

"We are joining together to say that the current system is broken: predatory resellers and secondary platforms engage in deceptive ticketing practices to inflate ticket prices and deprive fans of the chance to see their favorite artists at a fair price," the letter reads.

Live Nation and Ticketmaster tell Biden they're going to show fees upfront

Live Nation and Ticketmaster tell Biden they're going to show fees upfront

It goes on to say that the use of illegal bots, speculative ticket listings and deceitful advertising causes "real harm," including severing the relationship between artists and fans — "which forms the backbone of the entire music industry" — and allowing resellers to profit more than the artists themselves.

The artists are asking the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation to help fix those problems by supporting the Fans First Act , which was introduced by a bipartisan group of senators last December. It was referred to and remains before the committee, which would need to approve it to bring it to a floor vote.

"We, as artists, as music lovers, and as concert attendees ourselves, urge you to support the Fans First Act to combat predatory resellers' deceptive ticketing practices and the secondary platforms, which also profit from these practices," the letter continues. "Predatory resellers should not be more profitable than the people dedicating their lives to their art."

Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., who along with Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, is a co-sponsor of the bill, said in a statement Thursday that she will "keep working to pass this legislation."

"Buying a ticket to see your favorite artist in concert is like going through a gauntlet for too many Americans," Klobuchar said. "This is hurting music fans and it's hurting artists. That's why our bipartisan legislation to improve the ticketing experience has growing support, including hundreds of major musicians."

The Fans First Act focuses on three priorities : ticket sales transparency, consumer protection and stopping bad actors.

Senators are calling on the Justice Department to look into Ticketmaster's practices

Senators are calling on the Justice Department to look into Ticketmaster's practices

It would require live event ticket sellers and resellers to disclose more information about ticket costs and seat location, refund customers the full ticket price when events are canceled and create a reporting website for fans to file complaints.

"Even better, it backs all these regulations up with clear penalties and enforcement," the letter says.

The letter was organized by Fix the Tix , a coalition of over two dozen live event industry organizations led by the National Independent Venue Association (NIVA).

Since its formation in the fall of 2023, it has called on Congress to enact legislation that would protect fans from price gouging, ban fake tickets and ticket-buying bots, end fraudulent resale practices and ensure price transparency, among other reforms.

So how did this letter come together, and why now?

NIVA Executive Director Stephen Parker told NPR over email that industry groups representing artists — such as the Recording Academy and Music Managers Forum - U.S. — are a "critical part" of Fix the Tix's efforts.

"Artists engaged in those organizations heard about our efforts and volunteered to lend their voice to getting comprehensive ticketing reform passed," he said. "The letter is being sent now because time is running out in this Congress for the Senate and House to meaningfully address the predatory resale platforms and ticket brokers that plague fans and artists."

Ticketmaster and its parent company, Live Nation Entertainment, have come under increased scrutiny from artists and fans in recent years who accuse the companies of maintaining a monopoly over the industry ever since their controversial 2010 merger. Live Nation has repeatedly denied the allegations.

The Senate's Ticketmaster hearing featured plenty of Taylor Swift puns and protesters

The Senate's Ticketmaster hearing featured plenty of Taylor Swift puns and protesters

In particular, Ticketmaster's chaotic sale of Taylor Swift Eras Tour tickets in November 2022 left scores of fans empty-handed and outraged. Several state attorneys general launched investigations, a group of Swifties sued the companies for fraud and the Senate grilled Live Nation executives at a January 2023 hearing.

Lawmakers have since introduced several aptly-named bills to reform various aspects of the industry, like the TICKET Act and the BOSS and SWIFT Act .

For its part, Live Nation expressed support for the Fans First Act when it was first introduced in the Senate in December.

"We believe it's critical Congress acts to protect fans and artists from predatory resale practices, and have long supported a federal all-in pricing mandate, banning speculative ticketing and deceptive websites, as well as other measures," it said in a statement shared with NPR.

The Justice Department is said to be ramping up its antitrust probe into Live Nation, with unnamed sources telling the Wall Street Journal and Axios in recent weeks that the agency could file a lawsuit as soon as May.

Daniel Rooney.

Unknown singer stands in for Olly Murs at last-minute as Take That support in Glasgow

Daniel Rooney stood in at 30 minutes’ notice on Friday night when Murs’ flight from London was cancelled

A Scottish singer has said he is “still on a high” after being plucked from obscurity to replace Olly Murs as the opening act for Take That at the last minute.

Murs was due to open for Take That at the OVO Hydro in Glasgow on Friday but had to pull out after getting stuck in London when his flight was cancelled.

The Scottish presenter Ross King was watching Daniel Rooney play at the Radisson hotel opposite the arena when news broke that Take That were without a support act.

Impressed with his vocals, King recommended Rooney to his friend and Take That frontman Gary Barlow to fill the slot, the Daily Record reported, with only 30 minutes to get to the venue.

Rooney later shared a series of images and videos of him performing on stage before 14,000 fans on Instagram , describing it as a “crazy night”.

“Hardly slept, still on a high from last night,” he added.

“Thanks for everyone’s lovely messages about the gig and all the support so far.”

He also thanked King for spotting him at the hotel and getting him to the venue, adding: “Craziest 30 minutes ever.”

Rooney added: “Also a big thanks to the takethat lads for calming me down before the show and talking setlist tunes. Absolute legends.”

Barlow praised Rooney for stepping up to the plate, writing “this young man saved the day thank you” on Instagram with a photo of the musician.

Fellow band member Mark Owen also gave a “huge thanks” to Rooney for helping them out at the show, which is part of their This Life tour.

Murs apologised for cancelling his performance at short notice on Friday after experiencing flight issues all day.

He said he had been at London Heathrow from 11am but after “several delays” and an incident with a cabin crew member the British Airways flight was cancelled.

“So sorry to everyone at the takethat show tonight in Glasgow , unfortunately I won’t be there,” Murs, 39, said on X.

“Don’t think I’ve ever missed a gig before, am so annoyed!

“But am now in a car heading up for our six-hour journey for the Saturday and Sunday shows right now.”

Murs had been updating fans throughout the day on Instagram story, sharing a video from inside the plane which was “stuck on the runway” before exiting and attempting to board another flight.

“I’m trying my best to get to Glasgow,” he said.

Murs later said: “Honestly, you couldn’t write this day.

“One of the cabin crew has fallen over and hurt herself … I hope she’s OK, but basically it has further delayed our flight. So we’re waiting for someone to come in to replace her.”

Murs described the wait as “so frustrating”, before announcing the flight and his show had been cancelled.

“I’m extremely gutted, I don’t think I’ve ever missed a gig that I can recall, especially of this magnitude.”

He later shared a video of himself being driven to Glasgow for his Saturday and Sunday performances.

A British Airways spokesperson said: “We’ve apologised to our customers for the disruption to their travel plans, which was caused by a technical issue with the aircraft.”
