My English Learning Journey

I have been learning English since I was around 10 years old. Everything I was taught at school were tenses, verb conjugations, plural rules, complex grammar,… Every day my teacher required us to memorize new words by writing them down 10 times. Learning English was always a challenge for me. I got sick of vocabulary, of grammar rules, of English. And then one day, when I was probably in grade 10, my parents decided to buy me a computer. The computer has become my best friend ever since. I was amazed at how wonderful things were. The world has become a smaller place and people has become closer to each other. I could learn whatever I wanted without any help from others.

I began to listen to music, and watch TV shows. The first TV show that I watched was Hannah Montana. The TV show was just hilarious. I had picked up quite a lot of vocabulary from the show and it has become a memorable experience. It was also when I happened to fall in love with the language. I remember back then, I downloaded numerous English songs to my iPOD and listened to them everyday. I discovered many websites where people from all over the world exchanged languages and cultures with each other. I had made a lot of foreign friends there and sometimes we talked long hours about everything in life. In the first place, I thought the only reason why people learned English was to communicate with each other.  Not until did I immerse into the language that I realized the very language was the best way to create a strong bond between me and the endless knowledge of the world.

I could see a significant improvement in my English skills. And thanks to English, I have learned much more about the world around me. The journey towards language fluency is not always easy and I still have a long way to go. I don’t, however, give up on it. I enjoy the journey that I’ve been through rather than the destination ahead. If you don’t know where you are, if you’re not sure what to do next, just do whatever you love. If you are struggling with learning English, then let it be! Watch movies and laugh hard, read books and think thoroughly, play games and relax.

Whenever we feel positive emotions rushing through our heads, chances are we are feeling happy. Happiness is what you feel when you enter the house, the smell of your favorite food being cooked or when you finally save up enough money to buy something you’ve wanted. It is an undeniably magical feeling. 

Happiness can do wonders for your productivity and well-being; when you are happy, you are more energetic, optimistic, and motivated. So it is, without a doubt, important. However, do not become caught up in trying to be happy, as this may lead to worse problems. Instead, allow yourself to feel your emotions; be authentic, even if that means feeling a little more negative.

Parker-Pope writes about the different factors of happiness and how to practice mindfulness and positivity in this guide. She gives tips such as doing breathing exercises, moving around more, and spending time in places and with people that make you happy. Most importantly, however, she reminds readers that negative thoughts should not be repressed. Instead, we should accept them but challenge that mindset.

“Happiness is our choice of not leaving our mind and soul at the mercy of the sways of excitement. Happiness cannot eliminate sorrow, suffering, pain or death from the scheme of things, but it can help keep fear, anxiety, sadness, hopelessness, pessimism and other fathers of unhappiness at bay.”

Sultan discusses what happiness means to her personally. It provides an escape from all the dreariness and lousy news of daily life, not eliminating negative thoughts but keeping them at a distance, even just for a moment. She writes that to be happy; we should not base our happiness on the outcomes of our actions. We cannot control the world around us, so we should not link our happiness to it. If something doesn’t go our way, that is just how the world works. It is useless to be sad over what we cannot control.

4.   Happiness is Overrated by John Gorman

“Our souls do float across the sea of life, taking on water as they go, sinking ever so slightly — perhaps even imperceptibly — into despair. But our souls are not the bucket. Happiness itself is. And it’s the bucket we use to pour water out our souls and keep us afloat. What we really need is peace. Peace patches the holes in our souls and stops the leaking. Once we have peace, we will no longer need to seek happiness.”

In his essay, Gorman reflects on how he stopped trying to chase happiness and instead focused on finding peace in life. He writes that we are often so desperate looking for happiness that our lives become complicated, chaotic, and even depressing at times. He wants readers to do what they are passionate about and be their authentic selves; that way, they will find true happiness. You might also be interested in these essays about courage .

“That’s the mindset most of us have. Half of toxic positivity is just the suppression of 200% acceptable feelings such as anger, fear, sadness, confusion, and more. But by closing ourselves off to anything but positivity, we’re experiencing the same effects as being emotionally numb. Why are we doing this to ourselves?”

Mahajan writes about the phenomenon known as “toxic positivity” in which everyone is expected to be happy with their lives. It trivializes people’s misfortunes and sufferings, telling them to be happy with what they have instead. Mahajan opposes this, believing that everyone’s feelings are valid. She writes that it’s okay to be sad or angry at times, and the stigma around “negative feelings” should be erased. When we force ourselves to be happy, we may feel emotionally numb or even sad, the exact opposite of being happy. 

Many would say that happiness aids you in many aspects of your life. Based on personal experience and research, discuss the importance of being happy. Give a few benefits or advantages of happiness. These can include physical, mental, and psychological benefits, as well as anything else you can think of. 

Happiness means different things to different people and may come from various sources. In your essay, you can also explain how you define happiness. Reflect on this feeling and write about what makes you happy and why. Explain in detail for a more convincing essay; be sure to describe what you are writing about well. 

Happiness has a myriad of causes, many of which are material. Research the extent to which material possessions can make one happy, and write your essay about whether or not material things can truly make us happy. Consider the question, “Can money buy happiness?” Evaluate the extent to which it can or cannot, depending on your stance.  

Happiness has often been associated with a higher level of productivity. In your essay, look into the link between these two. In particular, discuss the mental and chemical effects of happiness. Since this topic is rooted in research and statistics, vet your sources carefully: only use the most credible sources for an accurate essay.

In their essays, many, including Gorman and Mahajan, seem to hold a more critical view of happiness. Our world is full of suffering and despair, so some ask: “Can we truly be happy on this earth?” Reflect on this question and make the argument for your position. Be sure to provide evidence from your own experiences and those of others. 

In dystopian stories, authorities often restrict people’s knowledge to keep them happy. We are seeing this even today, with some governments withholding crucial information to keep the population satisfied or stable. Write about whether you believe what they are doing is defensible or not, and provide evidence to support your point.

My Experience of Journey by Train

I have always been an avid supporter of train journeys. My involvement with train journeys began in childhood . I live in Lucknow and from here I have undertaken many train journeys. Furthermore, since childhood, I have paid several visits to the hill station of Almora to meet my relatives. Almora is a hill station located in the state of Uttarakhand. Most noteworthy, Almora is situated in the Himalayan mountain region. Due to this, trains cannot travel directly to Almora. Consequently, Kathgodam is the last town station accessible by trains before the mountain range begins.

The trip from Lucknow to kathgodam is quite a lively experience. I have always ensured the reservation of my seats beforehand. So, my train journey begins from Lucknow railway station. As the train undergoes motion and leaves the Lucknow railway station, my excitement begins to rise. Moreover, as the train gathers speed, a thrilling feeling overtakes me.

My train journey from Lucknow to Kathgodam is probably 8-10 hours duration. However, I enjoy every minute of it in spite of the journey being so long. Furthermore, all along the journey, one can purchase items of food and drinks. I almost always purchase meals and refreshments at least twice in the journey.

When slumber overtakes me, I make use of the sleeping berth. I personally find sleeping on the train berth very comfortable. When I wake after a deep sleep, mountains are visible from a distance. Moreover, as the train approaches Kathgodam with menacing speed, the view of mountains gets bigger and bigger. Also, my amusement greatly rises as I see the Himalayas draw closer. Finally, as the train stops at Kathgodam, my delightful train journey comes to an end.

Why Do I Like to Travel by Train?

Being happy is for most of us one of the key aims in life. But where we often go wrong is in figuring out which path to take to achieve that happiness.

My own path has been a somewhat unconventional one. In my last year at college, most of my peers were busy applying for full-time jobs with large companies, but I knew that wasn’t what I wanted to do.  

I wanted to see the world, which (long before gap years became so common) was met with disapproval by many. But excited, and somewhat scared, I set off alone on my travels.

I didn’t return for good until over seven years later, traveling around the world twice over, working as an English teacher in Istanbul and Barcelona, as a fruit picker on a kibbutz in Israel, in a ski resort, on a campsite in France, and in a fairground in Australia.

I drove across the US, rode the Trans-Siberian railway across Asia, and took precarious bus journeys through the Himalayas and the Andes.

It was a fantastically exciting time and left me with some amazing memories that will last forever. I knew that by doing this I’d probably be sacrificing any chance of reaching the upper echelons of the corporate tree, but that didn’t hold any appeal to me anyway.

Of more concern was the pressure I felt from family, friends, and society to settle down and find a “proper” job. But I’m really glad that I resisted that pressure and didn’t stop traveling and working abroad until I’d seen and experienced all that I wanted to.

I felt that there was plenty of time to have a conventional job after my traveling days were over, and this has proved correct.

The traveling taught me so much about myself, and life, and made me think about what I wanted from this short time on earth. I realized that I wanted to acquire experiences rather than money, and in my subsequent career that is what I have done.

I’ve done a variety of jobs: I’ve been a musician, graphic designer, novelist, and journalist. Much of the time, these have been precarious freelance jobs and not well paid, but they’ve all been fantastically interesting and given me a wealth of life experience.

I always wanted to have no regrets with the way I spent my life, and so far I haven’t. I know that if I’d spent my whole life trying to climb the corporate ladder I wouldn’t have been happy and would now have been lamenting what I hadn’t done in my life.

I’ve always found it really important to enjoy each step of the journey that I’ve been on and not just hoping to be happier at some point later in my life.

The path I’ve chosen may not be for everyone, but it is an example of the importance of choosing your own path in life, and ignoring the pressure from family, friends, and society. 

I’ve seen how some people are pressured into certain jobs, often because they are considered prestigious, but hate the path they have chosen. Others may be pushed to get further up the career ladder, but then find out they hate the managerial responsibility that this generally brings.

People also often think that when they have more material goods or money they will be happier . But while it may be hard to be happy in the western world with no money (although some people achieve it) making lots of money and buying lots of things may not necessarily make you content.

Buying a new car or yacht is often only a short-term happiness boost and it seems that after a while, each upgrade to the car, house, or yacht gives less and less extra happiness.

Surveys have shown again and again that once people reach a certain wage—around the average wage in western countries—happiness levels do not increase much.

With relationships, it’s also important to find the right path for ourselves, and to be as sure as we can that we have chosen the right partner. And when we’ve hopefully found them, it’s so important to enjoy each moment of that relationship, not always be looking to the future.

We might think that having children will make us happy, but then when we have them we realize all the responsibilities and difficulties that brings, and may look back on our days without children with fondness. Or if we have young children we might wish they were older, but then they become teenagers!

The common pattern in all this is choosing the right road for the type of person we are and finding happiness at as many places along that route as we can.

So it’s important to look at all the good things in our lives and to enjoy them to the full right now. That is much more likely to bring happiness than waiting for it to appear around the corner.

Travelling with friends is always fun. I had been to Jaipur, Nanital and Shimla with my friends. All these trips were planned by our school. We travelled by train on all these trips and had a lot of fun on the way but none of them involved so much travelling. Most of these were overnight journeys. But on our trip to Goa we spent one night and one and a half day in the train.

I kept sitting by the window for the first two-three hours of the journey. I loved the view outside. As it started getting dark, I joined my friends who were playing dumb charades. We kept playing this game until it was time for dinner. After having our dinner, we chatted until late night. We shared our experiences, narrated interesting stories and mimicked our teachers. It was all great fun. I slept comfortably at night and woke up late.

The breakfast was served almost immediately after I woke up. After having the breakfast, I went and stood by the train door which was half opened. The view outside was beautiful. I love nature and I can watch the trees, hills and the water bodies for hours. It soothes and pleases my senses and offers a delightful experience.

I kept standing there for a long time. One of my friends joined me there. We enjoyed the view and spoke about our love for travelling and nature. During the rest of the day, we played games, had food and chatted with each other. We reached Goa at around 11 at night.

• Compared to aeroplanes, travel time taken by trains is much higher. It is not a good option for those who need to reach somewhere urgently.

I have been on many train journeys since my childhood. I have gone to Mount Abu, Udaipur, Varanasi, Shimla, Chandigarh, Lucknow, Bombay and many other places with family, friends and relatives. I have travelled to most of these places by train. What I love most about train journeys is the view outside. I love to sit by the window and watch the natural surroundings that come by during the journey. I often take a novel along as I love reading while travelling.

Train journeys become all the more fun when we are travelling in groups. There are so many fun things to do on the way. We crack jokes, sing songs, play games and chit chat for hours during the journey. We also get a chance to meet new people. It feels great when we meet like-minded people on our way. It makes the trip quite enjoyable. There is so much to talk about and share. I have made quite a few friends during my train journeys.

The Happy Journey by Thornton Wilder: Summary

Ma (Kate) Kirby opens the window and calls her neighbor, Mrs. Schwartz, who comes out and asks if Kate is going. Mrs. Kirby relies that they are going in a minute and asks how the baby is. Mrs. Schwartz answers that she is all right now because she spat the thing up when they slapped her on the back. Then Mrs. Kirby requests her to give her cat a saucer of milk in the morning and in the evening. After this she greets Mrs. Hobineyer, another neighbor, who has heard that they are going away. Mrs. Kirby explains that they are going away just for three days to see her married daughter, Beulah, in Camden because her husband, Elmer, has got his vacation week from the laundry early this year. She adds that he is the best driver in the world. She thinks that the change ought to be good for the children and that her married daughter was completely sick a while ago. Then Mrs. Hobmeyer expresses her sympathy. Mrs. Kirby has not seen her daughter since then and she will not feel easy without seeing her. She orders Caroline to greet Mrs. Hobrneyer and Caroline does it obstinately. Mrs. Hobmeyer does not like to beat the rugs until they go because she does not want to choke them. She wishes their happy journey. Mrs. Schwartz expresses her good wishes for their journey and she also sends her best wishes to Beulah. Mrs. Kirby has finished packing. Elmer Kirby, her husband, comes in with Arthur's hat from the car. He has gone to the mechanic to get his car checked up. Caroline has rubbed her cheeks and they are red. All the high- school girls do this these days when they want to go out. But her mother does not like such silliness. She collects two pieces of luggage and starts for the door. Arthur, Caroline and Elmer go through it and then she locks the door and hangs the key by the ice box. They come out and get into the car. Elmer holds a steering wheel and continuously changes gears. Kate Kirby sits beside him. Arthur is behind his father and Caroline is behind her mother. Then they all say 'good-bye'.

Arthur requests his father not to drive by the school because his teacher might see them. But his mother does not care if he sees them 'because she thinks she can take her children out of school for one day without having to hide down back streets about it. Elmer nods to a passer-by who arranges their banquets. He asks his children to take deep breaths because the air is getting better. Pointing to an advertisement board about nice suits, Arthur wants to know if he will wear them one day and her mother replies that if he graduates with good marks his father will buy them for him.

Elimer suddenly takes his car to the side and Caroline asks him if they have to wait while the whole funeral goes by. He takes off his cat and Kate looks at them curiously. She asks Arthur to take off his hat like his father. The dead body seems to be one of Elmer's lodge-brothers. They all express their sympathy. Watching the funeral in silence, they are quite serious. Kate then remembers the funeral of Harold, who gave his life for his country. She philosophizes that one day everyone will meet the same fate and hold up the traffic for a few minutes. Kate does not mind what other people think of her. She does what she likes. Now they go on. Caroline reads an ad, "Fit-rite suspenders. The Working man's choice", but she does not understand why they spell "rite" instead of "right". At this her father replies that it will make her stop and think and that she will remember it. When Arthur reads another advertisement for "Miller's Spaghetti", Caroline asks her mother to make some when they get home. Ma Kirby promises to fulfill their demand. Then the children scream with laughter. Even, Elmer smiles. He praises her cooking and she says that she has had enough practice after cooking three meals a day for twenty-five years. Caroline loves going out in the country. When, Arthur wants to go to the lavatory, Caroline comments that he always behaves shamefully at school. But the mother asks her not get excited. The girl at an advertisement for Chesterfield cigarettes looks like Beulah, Ma says.

Arthur asks permission for taking a paper route with the Newark Daily Post but Ma Kirby does not allow him to do so at any cost because he would miss the God-given sleep. At this Arthur says that his mother got a letter from Him this morning. Then the mother becomes angry and asks him to get out of the car. She wants him to go back home. They are all surprised. But Kate does not like anybody to make fun of God, who has done a lot of things for her. They all request her to keep her nerves. Arthur is frightened because he thinks that he has said nothing like that: Because of God, they have not been to night clubs and bars, Ma Kirby comments. They drive on in silence for a moment and Elmer wants to give the car a little water.

He stops the car in a garage. He wants to have a little water in the radiator. The serviceman pours some water into the hood. Ma Kirby asks if they are on the right road for Camden. The man replies that they have to keep straight ahead. Then she says that her married daughter likes Camden. The man also likes it because he was born these. Kate and the man become fond of each other and talk about their private life. He says that his father sold the farm, built a factory there and moved to Philadelphia. Kate says that her married daughter Beulah lives there, 'because her husband works at the telephone company, that they are going to see her for a few days and that her husband and son are going to stay at the YMCA. He wishes their happy journey. Then they drive on. She expresses her desire to feed him up for a few days and make him fat. The man looks pale due to lack of motherly care. They see hot dog stand and Elmer stop the car. They are all hungry because of the early lunch. He sends Arthur to buy some. Kate and Caroline get out and Kate wants to take some flowers for Beulah. Kate is happy because she was born in New Jersey and it is the best state, although every state has something special about it. Soon, Arthur returns with hot dogs and distributes them. As he goes near his mother, he hesitates. He says sorry for what he said and bursts into tears. Then the mother consoles him, saying that everyone says wicked things sometimes, and that his intention was not bad. He weeps more violently than before. She forgives him. She whispers that he is a good boy at heart. Then Caroline starts to cry too. Ma is suddenly joyously alive and happy. Then she cajoles Arthur and they start having the hot dog. They reach Lawrence and then cross the Delaware near Trenton. George Washington had crossed the river at this point and he was first in everything: in war, in peace and in the heart of his countrymen. Ma Kirby added that he never told a lie and the children looked unhappy. There is a good sunset. Arthur asks how many people there are in the world and in America. His-father replies that there are a hundred and twenty-six million people in America.

Ma Kirby asks Arthur to sing a song and they all sing with him. The signpost says that Camden is five miles. Ma Kirby tells her husband to drop her and Caroline at Beulah's and the father and the son should go to YMCA. But they have to come back in an hour. Caroline sees the first star and asks everyone to make a wish. But her mother jokingly replies that she can make wishes without waiting for the star. Caroline knows what her mother's wishes are. She wants Caroline to be a good girl and Arthur to be honest-in-word-and-deed. As they are near the city Elmer asks Caroline to take Beulah's letter out of his pocket and to read the underlined part. After driving in the same direction, they reach the Beulah's house. She is looking for them.

All of them are very happy and the journey has almost ended. Beulah's eyes are filled with tears. She is very glad that she is alive after the operation. Horace, her husband, is expected to come soon. Ma Kirby asks the men to go to the YMCA and come back in an hour. Beulah has got two puppies. She looks at her mother and tells her that her baby girl just did not live a few minutes. Ma Kirby thinks that God thought it best. She is worried about the dinner. She asks Beulah to have a rest and goes into the kitchen herself to prepare dinner. She sings absent-mindedly and indistinctly.

Do you want to be happy? If you’re like most people, then yes, you do.

But what is happiness? What does it mean to be “happy”? [1]

This essay discusses four major philosophical theories of happiness. [2]

1. Hedonism

According to hedonism, happiness is simply the experience of pleasure. [3] A happy person has a lot more pleasure than displeasure (pain) in her life. To be happy, then, is just to feel good. In other words, there’s no difference between being happy and feeling happy.

Famous hedonists include the ancient Greek philosopher Epicurus and the modern English philosophers Jeremy Bentham and John Stuart Mill. [4] These philosophers all took happiness to include intellectual pleasures (such as reading a book) in addition to physical pleasures (such as having sex).

Although we associate being happy with feeling good, many philosophers think that hedonism is mistaken.

First, it’s possible to be happy without feeling good (such as when a happy person has a toothache), and it’s also possible to feel good without being happy (such as when an unhappy person gets a massage). Since happiness and pleasure can come apart, they can’t be the same thing.

Second, happiness and pleasure seem to have different properties. Pleasures are often fleeting, simple, and superficial (think of the pleasure involved in eating ice cream), whereas happiness is supposed to be lasting, complex, and profound. Things with different properties can’t be identical, so happiness can’t be the same thing as pleasure.

These arguments suggest that happiness and pleasure aren’t identical. That being said, it’s hard to imagine a happy person who never feels good. So, perhaps happiness involves pleasure without being identical to it.

2. Virtue Theory

According to virtue theory, happiness is the result of cultivating the virtues—both moral and intellectual—such as wisdom, courage, temperance, and patience. A happy person must be sufficiently virtuous. To be happy, then, is to cultivate excellence and to flourish as a result. This view is famously held by Plato, Aristotle, and the Stoics. [5]

Linking happiness to virtue has the advantage of treating happiness as a lasting, complex, and profound phenomenon. It also explains how happiness and pleasure can come apart, since a person can be virtuous without feeling good, and a person can feel good without being virtuous.

In spite of these advantages, however, virtue theory is questionable. An important part of being virtuous is being morally good. But are immoral people always unhappy? Arguably not. Many bad people seem happy in spite of—or even because of—their unsavory actions. And a similar point can be made about intellectual virtue: unwise or irrational people aren’t always unhappy, either. In fact, some of these people seem happy as a direct result of their intellectual deficiencies. “Ignorance is bliss,” the saying goes!

But virtue theorists have a response here. Maybe some immoral people seem happy, on the surface; but that doesn’t mean that they are truly happy, at some deeper level. And the same thing can be said about people who lack the intellectual virtues: ignorance may lead to bliss, but that bliss isn’t true happiness. So, there seems to be some room for debate on these issues.

3. Desire Satisfaction Theory

According to the desire satisfaction theory, happiness consists in getting what you want—whatever that happens to be. A happy person has many of her desires satisfied; and the more her desires are satisfied, the happier she is.

Even though getting what you want can be a source of happiness, identifying happiness with desire satisfaction is problematic.

To start, this implies that the only way to become happier is by satisfying a desire. This seems wrong. Sometimes our happiness is increased by getting something we didn’t previously want—such as a surprise birthday party or getting stuck taking care of a neighbor’s cat. This implies that desire satisfaction is not necessary for happiness.

Desire satisfaction is not always sufficient for happiness, either. Unfortunately, it is common for people to feel disappointed when they get what they want. Many accomplishments, such as earning a degree or winning a tournament, simply don’t bring the long-lasting happiness that we expect. [6]

So, even if getting what we want sometimes makes us happy, these counterexamples suggest that happiness does not consist in desire satisfaction. [7]

4. Life Satisfaction Theory

According to the life satisfaction theory, happiness consists in being satisfied with your life. A happy person has a positive impression of her life in general, even though she might not be happy about every single aspect of it. To be happy, then, means to be content with your life as a whole.

It’s controversial whether life satisfaction is affective (a feeling) or cognitive (a belief). On the one hand, life satisfaction certainly comes with positive feelings. On the other hand, it’s possible to step back, reflect on your life, and realize that it’s good, even when you’re feeling down. [8]  

One problem for this theory is that it’s difficult for people to distinguish how they feel in the moment from how they feel about their lives overall. Studies have shown that people report feeling more satisfied with their lives when the weather is good, even though this shouldn’t make that much of a difference. But measuring life satisfaction is complicated, so perhaps such studies should be taken with a grain of salt. [9]

5. Conclusion

Understanding what happiness is should enable you to become happier.

First, decide which theory of happiness you think is true, based on the arguments.

Second, pursue whatever happiness is according to that theory: seek pleasure and try to avoid pain (hedonism), cultivate moral and intellectual virtue (virtue theory), decide what you really want and do your best to get it (desire satisfaction theory), or change your life (or your attitude about it) so you feel (or believe) that it’s going well (life satisfaction theory).

“The Happy Journey” written by Thornton Wilder, describes a simple journey of the Kirby family from their home to Camden, to visit the family’s married daughter Beulah. Beulah was sick while giving birth to a dead child and had to undergo operation.

Before they begin the journey, Ma Kate Kirby advises her 13 year old son Arthur to put on hat, and warns Caroline not to use any cosmetics. Kirby family has kept good relationship with their neighbours. They help each other in need. Ma Kirby asks about the health of the baby of her neighbour Mrs. Schwartz, and also asks her to feed her cat during her absence. She tells her to use anything she needs by opening the door. Mr Schwartz readily accepts it. When another neighbour Mrs. Hobmeyer comes Ma Kirby asks Caroline to greet her. Mrs. Hobmeyer does not beat the rug because she does not want to choke the Kirby family. Before they leave the neighbours greet them best wishes.

Arthur requests his father not to drive by the school because he is afraid that his teacher may scold him. But mother Kirby thinks that she has right to take her children anywhere she likes. On the way they see a funeral procession, and father Elmer takes off his hat. Ma Kirby asks Arthur to take his hat off as sympathy to the dead ones. She even becomes philosophical and says that everyone has to die one day.

They see various advertisement billboards– for suits, suspenders, spaghetti and cigarettes. Arthur asks permission for taking a paper route with the Newark Daily Post but Ma Kirby does not like it because for her family and health is more important than money. Arthur speaks disrespectfully about God, this makes her very angry. Around New Brunswick, they see a collie dog and Ma Kirby pities the rather weak dog. On the gas station, Ma Kirby talks with the young garage man and sympathies with him. They stop again to have hot dogs. At this time Arthur repents that he was wrong for making fun of God. Ma pardons him asks to him to be good in words and deed. So, Arthur and Caroline start crying. They reach the house of Beulah and all are happy. Beulah eyes are filled with tears. She kisses her father and embraces him. She presents gifts to her brother and sister. Later Ma Kirby asks her daughter Beulah to lie down on the bed and take rest. Being a responsible mother, she goes to the kitchen and starts preparing food.

Ma Kirby is the main and strong character in this play. She is a loving mother, active, strict about dress and manners. She is happy and satisfied with her family. She thinks that the place where her family live is the best place in the world for her. She wants her children be honest in deeds and manners. She is thoughtful, determined and kind person.
