Heritage Walk of Old Delhi: An Insider’s DIY Tour

Suzanne wanders delhi contains affiliate links. if you make a purchase using one of the links below, i may receive compensation at no extra cost to you. i only recommend products and services i use and trust. read my disclaimer for more information ..

Even though Old Delhi has a reputation for being chaotic, it’s still easy to do a self-guided heritage walk. This do it yourself tour will take you to the most important sites, some excellent spots for street food, and let you explore a few lesser known gems in Old Delhi. I live in Delhi and have visited Old Delhi many, many times! These are my top tips and insider’s suggestions.

DIY Heritage Walk of Old Delhi: Quick Guide

If you’re short on time, here is a quick summary of your heritage walk in Old Delhi:

  • Jama Masjid (Delhi’s most famous mosque, built in the 17th century)
  • Matia Mahal Bazaar and Haji Nadeem Shahi Sheermal (historic bazaar and street food snack)
  • Red Fort (UNESCO – fort and palace of the Mughal empire)
  • Gurudwara Sis Ganj Sahib (Sikh temple built in 1783)
  • Kanwarji Raj Kumar Bhatura Junction (street food lunch break)
  • Kinari Bazaar, Naughara and Jain Dharamshala (wedding market, historic havelis and Jain temple)
  • Haveli Mirza Ghalib (home of Delhi’s most famous and revered poet, Mirza Ghalib)
  • Fatehpuri Masjid (built in 1650 for one of Shah Jahan’s wives)
  • Khari Baoli (historic spice market)
  • Katra Neel Road (very historic bazaar with many old havelis)

Heritage Walk of Old Delhi

Originally built in the 1600s, many of Old Delhi’s markets, lanes and buildings haven’t changed much. Although very congested and built up now, the general layout of Old Delhi is more or less the same. Old Delhi is a historic treasure, and you’re about to see why it’s on the UNESCO tentative list as a world heritage city. It’s actually the 7th historic city of Delhi, called Shahjahanabad, after emperor Shah Jahan.

Click here for a Google map of the Old Delhi heritage walk.

1. Starting/Meeting Point at Jama Masjid Metro Station

A good meeting point or place to start from is Gate 2 of the Jama Masjid metro station. It’s well marked, everyone can find it and it’s less than a 5 minute walk from your first stop, Jama Masjid. Using the Delhi metro is easy and cheap. I highly recommend it for getting around the city. Walk toward Jama Masjid.

2. Jama Masjid: Delhi’s Largest Mosque

thousands of worshippers outside Jama Masjid in Delhi on Eid-ul-Fitr

Jama Masjid is Delhi’s largest mosque – it can hold up to 25,000 worshippers at a time. It was built by the emperor Shah Jahan in the 1650s as a mosque for the royal family. It’s a close walk to the Red Fort, the royal palace. You may have heard of Shah Jahan before, he is the ruler who built the Taj Mahal for his favourite wife, Mumtaz Mahal.

This is a beautiful mosque, built of red sandstone and marble. For a small fee you can climb one of the towers. You’ll get spectacular views of Old Delhi from this vantage point. I have also heard there are religious relics from the Prophet Muhammad kept here, and that is possible to view them if you find the right caretaker.

Please keep in mind this is a working mosque, and you may not be allowed in during prayer times. Also be respectful with photos.

There are 3 entrances to the Jama Masjid. Enter at Gate 1 or 2. Shoes must be removed. You can leave them with the shoe minder at the entrance for a small tip (INR 50), or discretely put them in your bag. Women must cover their heads, as well as shoulders and knees (this goes for men too). There are cover ups you can borrow if needed.

Hours and Cost: 7:00 am – 12:00 pm & 1:30 pm – 6:30 pm, daily; free but there is a INR 300 fee for bringing in a camera

3. Matia Mahal Bazaar and Haji Nadeem Shahi Sheermal

Matia Mahal road at dusk busy with people and motorcycles - this is a must on a heritage walk of Old Delhi

It’s time for a snack and some famous Old Delhi street food! Exit Gate 1 of Jama Masjid, cross the road and walk down Matia Mahal Road. This is Matia Mahal Bazaar and it has been here since the 1600s. In fact, while the Red Fort was under construction, Shah Jahan lived in a palace in Matia Mahal. The palace is long gone, but several original palace arches are still in the the lanes of the busy market.

There are many famous Old Delhi eateries here, some are on their 5th or 6th generation, going back to Mughal times. I know it’s probably morning so I’m going to start you off with something easy and delicious – sheermal.

Sheermal is a sweet flatbread made with saffron and topped with dried fruits and nuts. You’ll see it all over Old Delhi, but this place is one of the very best. Haji Nadeem Shahi Sheermal will be on the left side of the street, at the first corner.

Hours and Cost: hours for shops and restaurants vary, but everything is open during the day and into the evening, except on Sunday when the markets are closed; free

4. Red Fort (UNESCO)

the author outside the Red Fort in Delhi, a important stop of a heritage walk of Old Delhi

From Matia Mahal Road, walk back toward the Jama Masjid. Hopefully you already purchased your online ticket for the Red Fort and can head straight to the main entrance at Lahori Gate. Otherwise, head to the main ticket book near Delhi Gate.

This is the royal Mughal palace built in 1639 by Shah Jahan, the ruler who built the Taj Mahal in Agra and the Jama Masjid you just visited. It remained the residence of all successive Mughal rulers until the British tossed out the last emperor Bahadur Shah Zafar in 1857. The Red Fort is Delhi’s most visited site, and I recommend you buy your ticket in advance on the Archeological Survey of India website .

When it was a royal palace, the fort was a world unto itself, designed so that nobody had to leave. It had beautiful fountains, gardens, marble audience halls, baths and a covered bazaar. Hundreds worked and lived within the fort. During the Rebellion of 1857 the British destroyed and looted much of it. Whole palace buildings were razed and replaced with ugly army barracks. Today the Red Fort is a far cry from its former splendour, but you can still get an idea of how magnificent it must have been.

There are a group of museums in the old army barracks at Red Fort, including a war museum, art museum and archeological museum. There is an additional fee for these and tickets must be purchased at the Red Fort.

Hours and Cost: 8:00 am – 9:00 pm, daily (closed Monday); INR 600 foreigners (online tickets are INR 550), children under 15 free

If you are visiting around August 15th (Independence Day), check ahead because the fort usually closes to visitors about 10 days before. The Prime Minister addresses the nation from the fort on Independence Day and it is closed for preparations.

5. Temples and Havelis of Chandni Chowk

Chandni Chowk the most important street on a an Old Delhi heritage walk

Exit the Red Fort and, cross the street and start walking up Chandni Chowk. Stay on the left side for now. It’s pretty easy to walk across Chandni Chowk since motorized vehicles are banned between 9:00 am and 9:00 pm every day. Some do break the rules, but it’s a lot better than it used to be.

On your left, very close to the Red Fort, is Shri Digambar Jain Lal Mandir & Bird Hospital, a Jain temple built in the 1650s.

The Jains were quite prominent in this area at that time, and the land was gifted to the community by Shah Jahan. Feel free to pop in and take a look. Behind the temple is a charitable bird hospital and visitors are welcome, though I am warning you the floors can be full of droppings. Because the hospital is on temple grounds you have to go barefoot.

Just past the Jain temple you will pass a large Hindu temple with a prominent white dome called the Gauri Shankar Mandir. It was built in the 1950s, but the lingam (a representation of Lord Shiva) inside is 800 years old.

Make sure you look up towards the second and third floors of the buildings you pass. Some of these are traditional 17th century havelis. They’re in pretty sad condition now, but you can imagine how lovely they must have been when Chandni Chowk was lined with gardens and fountains.

Hours and Cost: hours for shops and temples vary, but everything is open during the day and into the evening, except on Sunday when the markets are closed; free

6. Gurudwara Sis Ganj Sahib

Gurudwara Sis Ganj Sahib, Delhi

Next is Gurudwara Sis Ganj Sahib, one of the most prominent Sikh temples in India. The original shrine was built in 1783 at the site of the martyrdom of the ninth Sikh Guru, Guru Tegh Bahadur. The Guru was beheaded by emperor Aurangzeb in 1675. The gurudwara takes its name from the Punjabi word for head, ‘sis.’

Aurangzeb was the ruthless son of Shah Jahan (he seized power by imprisoning his father and killing his brothers), and executed the Guru after he refused to convert to Islam.

Despite its past, this is a very peaceful and beautiful gurudwara. Everyone is welcome.

For a very special and culturally authentic experience, join the free vegetarian community meal, langar after visiting the temple. It is in the dining hall. Everyone is welcome to have langar, regardless of religion or nationality.

You must remove your shoes and cover your head to enter the temple. Bandanas are available to borrow.

Hours and Cost: 24/7; free

7. Lunch at Kanwarji Raj Kumar Bhatura Junction

Bhatura Junction stand in Old Delhi, a great place for lunch on a heritage walk of Old Delhi

It’s time for one of the most real Delhi experiences you can have – eating lunch like a local in Delhi-6! Delhi-6 is what locals fondly call this part of Old Delhi. It refers to the postal code.

As you exit Gurudwara Sis Ganj Sahib, go left and continue walking along Chandni Chowk. In less than 5 minutes you’ll see the Kanwarji Raj Kumar bhatura stand. Bhatura are puffy fried breads and are often served with chole, a rich chickpea curry. That is exactly what you should order here: chole bhatura. It is one of the very best in the city.

You have to pay for your food around the corner at the window where they sell the sweets (this is actually a very famous snack and sweet shop). Grab your receipt and go back to the bhatura stand and hand it over to the guy behind the counter.

Once your order is ready, grab a seat wherever you can find one (I often eat on the benches in the median), dig in, and enjoy eating like a Delhi local.

Everything is cooked and should be safe to eat. I’ve eaten her numerous times and never had a problem. You’ll be using your hands, so if you have sanitizer wipes it would be smart to use them now! I’m pretty sure half the time people get ‘delhi belly’ is not from the food, but from the bacteria on their hands. If you are worried, you can see my tips on how to eat street food safely .

Hours and Cost: 9:00 am – 9:00 pm, daily; about INR 100 for chole bhatura

8. Kinari Bazaar, Naughara Gali and Jain Dharamshala

A series of pained Mughal stle doors in Naughara Lane, Old Dlehi

Go back to the window where you paid for your food at Kanwarji Raj Kumar Bhatura Junction and walk down this lane. This is the beginning of Kinari Bazaar, the wedding market. Chandni Chowk is full of these historic, specialty bazaars and Kinari Bazaar is one of the most popular and famous. These lanes and bazaars were here in the 1600s, you are literally walking the streets of history.

Kinari Bazaar is where you’ll find all kinds of trinkets and adornments used in Indian weddings. The lanes are windy, narrow and full of interesting shops. You can pick up all sorts of lace, trim, beads and embellishments at great prices, especially if you can bargain. You will walk past Parantha Wali Gali , the lane full of parantha shops. If you enjoy the stuffed Indian flatbreads, you’ll be bowled over by the variety here. The first parantha shops opened in this lane in 1872.

To find Naughara Gali, take a left down another lane just a bit past the parantha area, and then a right. Naughara Gali and the Jain temple are marked on Google maps – I recommend you navigate using this. If you don’t have data, ask a local.

Naughara Gali is a lane with 9 historic havelis from the 1700s. They are all on this small alley that ends with the Jain Svetambar temple. The havelis are subject to heritage restrictions and must maintain the exterior in the original style. The doorways and elevations are typical Mughal design, with latticed balconies and arched doorways carved with flowers and vines. These homes were, and many still are, owned by wealthy jewelry families.

Continue to the end and take a look inside the Jain temple. Parts of the temple are believed to be 2500 years old.

9. Haveli Mirza Ghalib

A marble bust of Ghalib inside Haveli Mirza Ghalib, Old Delhi

Use Google maps to help you navigate through the lanes of Old Delhi to Haveli Mirza Ghalib. You can also walk back to Chandni Chowk and go from there, but why back-track when you can walk the lanes and see the real Delhi-6?

This is the historic home of the last Mughal poet, Mirza Asadullah Khan Ghalib. His poetry is part of the cultural heritage of Delhi. Ghalib is widely accepted as the greatest of the Mughal poets. He lived through the decline of the empire and was a poetry tutor of the last ruler, Bahadur Shah Zafar.

Ghalib wrote painful, beautiful poems about the destruction of Shahjahanabad (what is now Old Delhi) during the Rebellion of 1857. The lovely old city was looted and destroyed by British forces at that time, and Ghalib was witness to it all.

The haveli was much cleaner and more beautiful during Ghalib’s time, but the narrow lanes and architecture have not changed much. You can also visit Ghalib’s grave in  Chausath Khamba .

Hours and Cost:  10:00 am – 6:00 pm, Tuesday to Sunday (closed Monday); free

10. Fatehpuri Masjid

One of the red sandstone Mughal style gates of Fatehpuri Masjid- a must on a heritage walk of Old Delhi

From Ghalib’s haveli, head up Ballimaran Road back to Chandni Chowk. Turn left onto Chandni Chowk and take it to the end, in front of Fatehpuri Masjid.

The mosque was built in 1650 for Fatehpuri Begum, who was a wife of Mughal ruler Shah Jahan. During the Rebellion of 1857 British troops occupied the mosque. Soldiers looted and destroyed the fountains and carvings, some even carved their own names into the red sandstone arches.

The mosque was later auctioned off to a wealthy Hindu merchant who sold it back to the British, and 20 years later it was finally returned to the Muslim community. You’ll notice there are some prominent graves in the courtyard. These belong to Islamic scholars and past Imams of the mosque.

This is a working mosque, so shoes must be removed and women must cover their heads. Conservative dress is required.

Hours and Cost:  6:00 am – 8:00 pm, daily; free

11. Khari Baoli – Old Delhi’s Spice Market

display of spices at the spice market, one of the most interesting hertigates sites on a walk in Old Delhi

Exit Fatehpuri Masjid through the north gate and you will find yourself in Khari Baoli, Asia’s largest wholesale spice market. The market is named after an ancient saltwater stepwell that was at this location, but has long since dried up.

Khari Baoli has been here for many years, some of these shops have been in the same family for 10 generations.

This is the perfect place to pick up fresh spices, dried fruit, nuts and loose tea. But don’t buy from the first shop. Head further into the market to get better prices. Khari Baoli is on just about every Old Delhi walking tour and gets a lot of tourists. Prices will be inflated, especially if you look like a foreigner.

Be prepared, the market is an assault on the olfactory senses! I cannot walk through here without sneezing.

Hours and Cost:  11:30 am – 6:00 pm, daily (closed Sunday); free

12. Katra Neel Road

The Katra Neel gateway in Old Delhi on a busy street with pedestrians

From Khari Baoli walk back across Chandni Chowk on the opposite side of the street this time. If you took the metro, you can walk to Chandni Chowk metro station by way of Katra Neel Road. Katra Neel market is known for cloth and Indian wedding clothing.

The area was established during Shah Jahan’s time and you’ll find many examples of Mughal architecture and old havelis if you look. You’ll also see a stone arched gate, Katra Neel Gateway, built in 1857 but now off limits as a portion recently collapsed. Many of the old haveli courtyards have a Shivalay (shrine to Lord Shiva), and Katra Neel is known for this. If you have the chance, look into the courtyards to see the Shivalays.

This market is significant in the heritage of Old Delhi. It was here the rebels lived during the revolts of 1857, and many were hanged here by the British.

From Katra Neel, walk through Mahatma Gandhi Park (behind Town Hall – look for the clock tower) and toward the Chandni Chowk metro station. This is where your DIY Old Delhi heritage walk ends. There are many great places to eat in Old Delhi if you’re not ready to call it a day.

Hours and Cost:  11:00 am – 9:00 pm, (market closed Sunday); free

These walks cover the well-known heritage sites that are on the regular tourist map, such as Red Fort, Humayun’s Tomb, Purana Qila and QutbMinar. While the rules may oblige us to use a licensed guide inside the main sites, we supplement the information they give with stories, little known facts and visual aids. We can also explore the lesser known places in the area, and familiarise you with local foods and transport, such as rickshaws and the metro. A wider perspective is also provided by a comparative study of architectural forms across the world of the same period.

The options are innumerable

Here the walks are around:

i) Chandni Chowk–  The walled city of Shahjanabad, through kuchas, galis and katras, havelis and fascinating Bazaars (warning: some walk trails are through narrow, congested dirty alleys.) There are several walk routes:

Walk 1. This is more of a  spiritual tour.  We visit Jain & Hindu temples, a Sikh Gurudwara and Masjids and see their forms of offering and meditation. Along the way we pass havelis and educational institutions; some nestling in narrow alleys. We relish and savor the delicious street foods and end at Jama Masjid.

Walk 2  Here we stay on the main street of Chandni Chowk Chowk and walk all the way from the Red Fort to Fatehpuri Masjid and climb to the top of the Spice market to get a stupendous view of the Red Fort .

Walk 3.  Around Fatehpuri Masjid – this is quite a unique walk devised by me wherein we explore beautiful Shivalayas (Indian temples), Baghs (gardens) of the Mughal and British period (now all modern) and we end with the 1912 bombing story of Lord Hardinge.

Walk 4  Havelis and history around Sita Ram Bazar and Turkman Gate

Walk 5  Savor mouth-watering (vegetarian) winter delicacies on a Street Food walk. Meander through the colorful bazaars offering glittering jewellery, aromatic spices, sumptuous silks, bridal outfits and much more.

It’s best to combine walks in the above areas with a visit to the Red Fort. You also have the option of selecting places from the above list and leaving the customization to us.

iii)   Civil Lines–  a remnant of the decaying British bungalows set in large gardens, and colonial-era schools,

v)   Delhi University –  a walk in the North campus to unravel the history of the colleges.

More so in the Period walks section b) Central Delhi

i)  Walk through Connaught Place and New Delhi to know Lutyens’s Delhi better;

ii)  Nizammuddin Dargarh for the story of the revered sufi saint, Nizamuddin Aulia – one of the urban villages of Delhi, where extreme poverty co-exists with one of the most important sufi shrines in the country; iii)  Safdarjung Tomb – a magnificent 18th century tomb with an interior that is of greater interest than that of Humayun’s Tomb,

iv) Lodi Gardens – four tombs from the 15th and early 16th centuries in a well-maintained garden that also contains other minor ruins Also meet the birds, trees & butterflies that flourish in this glorious green space. This walk is an anytime and all time favorite!

v)  Paharganj & New Delhi Railway station and Qadam Sharif – a little known 14th century fortified tomb

Why not explore Delhi’s markets, cafes, architecture, art, theatre and culture on one of our new walks?

c) South Delhi

Combine this with the Qutb complex ( a regular walk)  and enjoy the added bonus of the Flower Market. This is the best introduction to the 1st City of Delhi

1.  Haus Khas, South Extention, Khirki, Begumpur, Chirag Dilli etc. for villages and tombs.

2.  Mehrauli ( Lal Kot) for the village – a marvellous mixture of quiet residential lanes, a busy market, ancient ruins and the important sufi shrine, fascinating and unusal Lodhi period buildings, pleasure garden resorts of the later Mughal Emporers and Britishers etc.

3.  Mehrauli Archaelogical Park – a range of ruins dating from the 13th century to the 19th set in partly landscaped, partly wild parkland.

Many people like to combine a Regular Walk of an area with an  Off- The- Beaten- Track Walk in the same area. You can do this too!

The possibilities are endless:  Food, Spiritual tours, the Baolis (stepwells) and Baghs (gardens) of Delhi, Textiles, Havelis of Old Delhi, Ghalib’s Delhi: walk around Ballimaran’s streets, home to Urdu poet, Mirza Ghalib.

Let’s walk the ‘7 cities of Delhi’ and explore the ruins associated with these:  Mehrauli, Siri, Jahanpanah, Tughlakabad, Ferozabad, Dinpanah and Shahjahanabad. Then we add the 8th city – Imperial Delhi, and its links to Calcutta and Shimla.

Here we explore the heritage sites relating to the 1857 Mutiny, the three durbars, and British Colonial Delhi of 1911 based around the Civil Lines of Temporary Delhi. This integrates ASI protected monuments with the Delhi Metro, covering the Ridge, Badli ki Sarai, Kashmere Gate & Civil lines. This walk is done in a 2-part series.

Our over 30 walk routes mentioned in this section can be offered as online tours from home. For further details refer to Tours from Home section

All the above tours can be customized to suit your requirements coupled with ideas from you, as well. First time tourists can enjoy combining a regular walk with an off-the-beaten track Walk, theme or period walk.

Walks for schools have been designed keeping in view the audio-visual element of learning. learning. The boring history being taught in schools can be made into a tremendous learning experience by taking a walk through the Humayun’s Tomb (to supplement a lesson on the Mughal Dynasty): or through Lodi Gardens (to discover the Lodi Kings), or Tughlaqabad (much more exciting than memorizing dates for Tughlaq dynasties). Kids really love these outdoor experiences with us that include quizzes, puzzles and internet searches related to the walk. Some of our most popular walks have been the ones for moms, dads and kids, in which all participate in the puzzles and quizzes, and essentially take the walk home with them.

Delhi is blessed with several museums whose collections can be made more interesting by focusing on subjects such as the history of textiles, Lord Krishna, textiles etc.

We even escort groups to places around Delhi that include Agra, Jaipur, Shekhawati, Brindavan, Mathura, Mount Abu (Jain temples), Amritsar, Ajmer, Dehradun, Mussorie along with designing eco-trails and spiritual tours to Rishikesh, Vrindavan, Doon valley etc.  Read more in Short Trips

Delhi Heritage Walk - Kanika Singh

Laxmi Narayan Temple

Delhi Heritage Walks is a team of young historians who lead walking trails in lesser known parts of the city of Delhi. Regular walks open to all members of the public are organised on weekends and the calendar of the month is available on www.delhiheritagewalks.com . The charges for regular walks are Rs. 600/- per head.

Custom walks are organised on request. The charges are Rs. 3000/- for a single person; Rs. 4000/- for 2-5 people; Rs. 800/- per person for 6 or more people.

Some of our most popular trails are:

Mehrauli Archaeological Park: This Park is unique in being dotted with ruins from early medieval times to the 19th century. It is one of the most interesting sites in Delhi. Its main attractions include the mosque and tomb of Jamali, a royal tomb which is the first building in the subcontinent to use the true arch, a beautiful step well with subterranean rooms and residence of a British official (which was built out of a tomb). The site is adjacent to the Qutab Complex. http://blog.delhiheritagewalks.com/stories-of-medieval-delhi-through-a-heritage-walk-in-mehrauli-7-july-13/

Hauz Khas & Deer Park: Hauz Khas is a reservoir built in early 14th century, which gives the village and the area its name. Ruins of a large madrasa and a royal tomb stand on one edge of the tank. Today Hauz Khas is home to designer boutiques, cafes and studios. The adjacent Deer Park has some stunning monuments hidden in its depths. http://blog.delhiheritagewalks.com/a-heritage-walk-in-hauz-khas-a-medieval-centre-of-learning-19-august-2012/

Jahanpanah & Begumpur: This is one of the more curious sites in Delhi. Located in South Delhi near Sarvapriya Vihar, this walk covers the remains of the city of Jahanpanah. The site is called Vijay Mandal & it believed to have included the Hall of A Thousand Pillars, so vividly described by Ibn Battuta. Begumpur Masjid is one of the least known but most stunning monuments in Delhi. http://blog.delhiheritagewalks.com/refuge-of-the-world-exploring-jahanpanah-begumpur-21jul13/

Lodi Garden: Lodi Garden is Delhi's most beautiful and popular parks. Here monuments are located amidst landscaped garden. It has the royal tombs of medieval rulers of Delhi: Muhammad Shah and Sikander Lodi; a gateway called Bara Gumbad with an exquisitely decorated mosque, Shish gumbad; a 16th century bridge and a couple of late-Mughal monuments. The park is rich in variety of trees and birds. http://blog.delhiheritagewalks.com/a-slice-of-history-at-lodi-garden-23-june-13/

Tughluqabad: A 14th century capital of Delhi, Tughluqabad is ruins frozen in time. The remains of this massive complex stretch as far as the eye can see. This heritage walk explores the fort, the royal tomb which once stood in a lake, palace buildings, granaries, dungeons & a secret escape route! http://blog.delhiheritagewalks.com/of-sultans-sufis-the-cursed-city-of-tughluqabad-heritage-walk-on-10-feb-13/

Kotla Firuz Shah: A 14th century citadel in Delhi, now gives its name to the cricket stadium nearby. The citadel is believed to be haunted by djinns and people come here in to offer prayers to them in the hope of getting their wish fulfilled. It has some interesting monuments: a circular baoli, a 4th century Asokan pillar and the Jami Masjid which earned praise from Tamerlane himself. http://blog.delhiheritagewalks.com/heritage-walk-to-kotla-firuz-shah-10-mar13/

Mehrauli Village : This walk explores the area behind the famous Qutb complex. A historic village, Mehrauli is built around the Sufi shrine of Bakhtiyar Kaki. Each monument in the neighbourhood has a story to tell: step wells where water smelled of sulphur, a tank where Prophet Muhammad left a mark, martyrdom site of Sikh hero Banda Bahadur, a palace of the Mughals and a still empty grave meant for the last Mughal emperor. http://blog.delhiheritagewalks.com/a-trail-of-many-centuries-heritage-walk-in-mehrauli-village-30-june-13/

Chandni Chowk: A heritage walk through the main street of old Delhi, with landmarks of Shah Jahans capital. We cover some famous bazaars, temples of all faiths and some well known food stops along the way. We start at Digamber Jain Mandir, see Gauri Shankar temple, Sisganj Gurdwara, Fatehpuri Masjid, shivalayas in Katra Neel, Town Hall, ending with a spectacular view of old Delhi from Khari Baoli. http://blog.delhiheritagewalks.com/a-walking-tour-of-chandni-chowk-6oct13/

India Ramps Up Its Promotion as a Wedding Destination – India Report

Bulbul Dhawan , Skift

May 6th, 2024 at 11:00 PM EDT

Indian weddings mean big money. The Indian government is aiming to harness India's cultural diversity and vast offerings to promote the country as the preferred domestic and international wedding destination.

Bulbul Dhawan

The Skift India Newsletter is your go-to platform for all news related to travel, tourism, airlines, and hospitality in India.

India is actively promoting itself as the next big wedding destination. At the first “Wed in India” Expo ongoing in Jaipur till Wednesday, tourism ministry official Manisha Saxena said that the rapid infrastructure development across India is aiding destination weddings.

PM Modi’s Call: The call for Wed In India was first made by Indian Prime Minister Modi in November last year. According to Modi “wed in India” would help boost the economy if Indians hosted their weddings within their country. Skift Research’s survey reveals that Indian destination weddings have created a thriving market, estimated at $1.9 billion (INR 159.6 billion) in outbound travel spending.

“Indians, both in the country and the diaspora globally, are getting more prosperous. Better to spend more in our own country to benefit our own people and economy. That’s why ‘Wed in India’ is a great initiative,” said SK Pathak, FICCI secretary general at the first-ever Wed in India expo.

The expo was hosted not just to encourage Indians to host their weddings within the country but to make India the “world’s wedding destination.”

Who are participating: Policymakers, stakeholders from the tourism and hospitality industry and tour operators from over 50 countries are participating in the “Wed in India” expo.

Wedding venue: Saxena spoke about states like Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Orissa, Haryana, Kerala, and Goa which are already popular destinations for Wed-in-India. She also spoke about the Northeast emerging as a preferred destination.

Why Rajasthan: Rajasthan, where the expo is currently ongoing, has long been a preferred destination for celebrity weddings due to its luxurious and opulent settings. The state’s magnificent palaces forts and havelis converted into luxury heritage hotels provide a regal backdrop for extravagant celebrations.

Hotel infrastructure: Fairmont Jaipur and Raffles Udaipur in Rajasthan are known to be among the most prominent luxury wedding venues in India. Accor is now also bringing a Raffles to Jaipur and a Fairmont to Udaipur. Hilton has also selected Jaipur as the city for the launch of its Waldorf Astoria brand in India due to the city’s ability to attract high-end weddings .

Speakers also spoke about the readiness of India’s wedding ecosystem, the dynamics of wedding tourism and its impact on India’s larger tourism industry.

India, a 365-day destination: Underlining that India is 365-day destination, Saxena said, “India is not just a six-month destination from October to March. It is actually a 365-day destination. We have just launched an initiative called ‘Coolcation’ to dispel the myth that summers are hot in India. There are some cool pockets in India too.”

The business of Indian weddings: Skift earlier reported that in the November-December wedding season of 2023, 3.5 million couples got married in India, spending a cumulative amount of $57 billion. There is an emerging trend of booking luxury hotels and resorts to host extravagant weddings.

TBO Tek IPO to Open This Week

Travel distribution company TBO Tek is set to go public this week , with its IPO scheduled for May 8. The company aims to raise INR 15.5 billion ($180 million) , including a fresh issue of INR 4 billion ($48 million).

TBO, which serves as a one-stop hub for travel agents to book various travel services including flights and hotels, has not had to reveal a lot about its business so far. Its IPO prospectus, however, reveals that its platform allows agents to access over 750 airlines and more than a million hotels globally.

The prospectus also reveals that B2B rates and commissions are the two main sources of revenue for the IPO-bound company. The company has several business verticals, including an online learning platform for travel agents, a booker rewards program, and a mobile-first corporate travel platform.

Air India to Start Direct Delhi-Zurich Flights in June

Air India is set to commence direct flights between Delhi and Zurich starting June 16. The carrier will operate on the route four times a week. This marks Air India’s entry into Switzerland, and with this, the airline now flies to seven destinations in mainland Europe.

Air India CEO Campbell Wilson said, “With over 250 Swiss companies operating in India, hundreds of Indian companies in Switzerland,  and a growing Indian diaspora of nearly 18,000, these flights will cater to a strong demand for business  and leisure travel in both directions. Switzerland, a consistently top-ranking European destination for Indian tourists, will now be even more accessible.”

The airline is attempting an overhaul as it prepares for its merger with sister carrier Vistara. Wilson aims to restore Air India into a “top-tier and world-class airline”. As part of this, it is planning international expansion. The airline will operate direct flights from Delhi to Ho Chi Minh City from June, and is planning to add more destinations to its network.

Sarovar Hotels Opens V Sarovar Portico in Jaipur

Sarovar Hotels has announced the opening of V Sarovar Portico Jaipur in Rajasthan. The 106-key property is Sarovar’s sixth property in the city.

For Sarovar, Bangalore, Lucknow, and Jaipur are focus areas in India after emerging as hubs in the past few years, managing director Ajay Bakaya told Skift .

The hotel chain has more than 120 operational hotels across 75 destinations worldwide, and is expecting to have 125 operational properties in India by the end of 2024 . It also has 70 to 80 hotels in its pipeline, and by the end of 2025, it is looking at 150 operational hotels in its India portfolio.

IndiGo Doubles Frequency of Delhi-Phuket Direct Flights

Budget carrier IndiGo has doubled its frequency of direct flights between Delhi and Thailand’s Phuket. Starting June 1, the airline will operate 14 weekly flights between the two cities instead of the current seven flights a week.

These are in addition to the seven weekly flights that the airline operates between Delhi and Bangkok, said IndiGo global sales head Vinay Malhotra.

IndiGo’s move has come on the heels of Air India’s decision to operate additional direct flights between Delhi and Phuket starting June 1. Full service airline Air India already flies daily direct flights between the two cities, and earlier this month, announced its plans to add a second direct flight six days a week.

India is one of the most important source markets for Thailand , and in 2023, more than 1.6 million Indian travelers visited Thailand.

EaseMyTrip Unveils Explore Bharat Initiative

Online travel company EaseMyTrip has unveiled the EXPLORE Bharat initiative at the Arabian Travel Market 2024. With this initiative, the online agency aims to promote the culture, heritage, festivals, and offbeat destinations of India among travelers from the United Arab Emirates and the Middle East region.

The initiative is EaseMyTrip’s effort towards promoting India as a top travel destination and showcasing its diverse offerings to a global audience, said co-founder Rikant Pittie. “The Arabian travel industry is witnessing remarkable growth, driven by factors such as technological advancements, evolving consumer preferences, and a renewed focus on sustainable travel.”
