For Indians, any time of the year is a good time to visit the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Reachable from New Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport in under 4 hours, or from the Thiruvananthapuram International Airport in just over this time, the UAE is accessible by air from most major Indian cities in an average of 4 hours.

Dubai, a hop-over destination

Indians keep visiting this booming, safe and secure Gulf country to enjoy its shopping, recreation and adventure potential, and to meet up with family and friends, who oblige them with whirlwind tours through this mini paradise. For Indians, the UAE, and in particular Dubai, has become their home away from home, a hop-over destination for extended weekends and national holidays.

The region’s wide range of attractions cater to the tastes of all varieties of holiday-makers. From the skyscrapers lining Sheikh Zayed Road, the world-class mega malls and multi-million-dollar offshore developments, to the Old World souks, beaches and adrenaline-charged desert safaris, Dubai has it all.

Dubai is also a popular transit destination for travellers, owing to its geographically central location between Asia and Europe. Over the last decade, the UAE has seen a tremendous growth in the number of travellers from India. Even the hot summer months of July and August when outside is blazing hot, the cool air-conditioned malls in the UAE are flush with tourists, who come to partake in the Summer Surprises shopping bonanza.

Reasons Your Dubai Visa Can Get Rejected

Here are some reasons why your Dubai Visa Application can get rejected:

- In case you are a woman below the age of 24 and are travelling alone, there could be a delay or rejection of your visa, suspecting human trafficking.

- Any previous criminal record or fraud or any misconduct in the UAE or in India can lead to your visa getting rejected.

- In case you had a UAE residence visa earlier and left the country without cancelling the visa. The Public Relation Officer needs to have it cancelled for you before issuing you a new tourist visa.

- In case the scanned copies of your passport are not legible and the UAE immigration finds it suspect and rejects or delays the process of granting you a Dubai visa.

- Your visa can get rejected if your passport lists you as a non-white collar professional like a labourer, a farmer etc.

- In case your visa application has some typos in the name, passport number, date of birth, passport issuance and expiry dates, your application can get rejected or delayed.

- In case you had applied for a tourist visa to Dubai and had not utilised it. You then have to get it first cancelled from an OTA before applying for a new UAE visa.

- In case you have applied for an employment visa through an organisation in the UAE and did not utilise it. In such a case the PRO of the very company needs to first cancel your visa in order for you to apply for a fresh Dubai visa.

Major Schengen visa update for Bahrain, Oman, Saudi Arabia and India

how to apply dubai visit visa online from india

Under the new arrangement, nationals of Saudi Arabia, Oman, and Bahrain will be eligible for five-year multiple-entry Schengen visas

Marisha Singh

Passport holders from Bahrain, Oman and Saudi Arabia, are set to benefit from extended travel privileges as the European Union (EU) announced the issuance of five-year multiple-entry Schengen visas.

The announcement was made by Josep Borrell, the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, during the High-Level Forum on Regional Security and Cooperation held in Luxembourg.

He said, “I would like to welcome the adoption by the [European] Commission this morning of decisions that will allow to harmonise the rules on the issuing of multiple-entry visas for GCC countries.”

Borrell expressed the EU’s commitment to strengthening relations with Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries by harmonising visa rules.

Schengen visa changes

Under the new arrangement, nationals of Saudi Arabia, Oman, and Bahrain will be eligible for five-year multiple-entry Schengen visas, allowing them to make multiple visits to Schengen Area countries within a calendar year.

However, travellers must adhere to the 90/180-day rule, limiting stays to a maximum of three months within any six-month period.

While specific details are yet to be officially released by EU authorities, it is anticipated that first-time applicants and eligible passport holders from the mentioned countries will benefit from the extended visa validity as well.

Notably, citizens of the UAE are currently the only GCC nationals who enjoy a visa-free entry to the Schengen Area, while discussions are ongoing between other GCC nations and the EU to further ease visa requirements.

Earlier this year, talks saw EU countries consider the lifting of visa requirements for nationals of Kuwait and Qatar based on several key criteria, as revealed in a recent report:

  • Irregular migration
  • Public policy and security
  • Economic benefits
  • EU relations with the countries

The European Union Commission’s assessment concluded that both Kuwait and Qatar present a low risk in terms of irregular immigration.

Should the European visa requirements for these GCC countries be lifted, travellers would be eligible for the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS).

Indian nationals benefit from new Schengen visa rule change

In addition to the visa changes for Gulf citizens, the EU has also adopted more favorable Schengen visa rules for Indian nationals.

Eligible Indian travellers with an established travel history and prior Schengen visa usage will now be granted multiple-entry visas with extended validity, starting from two years and potentially extending to five years, subject to passport validity.

Previously, the standard rules of the Visa Code applied.

European Union adopts more favourable Schengen visa rules for Indians

Indian Nationals can now apply for a multiple entry Schengen visa with longer validity

On 18 April 2024, the European Commission adopted specific rules on the issuing of multiple entry visas to Indian nationals, which are more favourable than the standard rules of the Visa Code that applied to date. This new visa ‘cascade’ regime for Indian nationals residing in India who apply for Schengen (short-stay) visas in India will provide easier access to visas with multi-year validity for travellers with an established travel history, if the passport validity allows.

According to the newly adopted visa “cascade” regime for India, Indian nationals can now be issued long-term, multi-entry Schengen visas valid for two years after having obtained and lawfully used two visas within the previous three years. The two-year visa will normally be followed by a five-year visa, if the passport has sufficient validity remaining. During the validity period of these visas, holders enjoy travel rights equivalent to visa-free nationals.

This decision comes in the context of strengthened relations under the EU-India Common Agenda on Migration and Mobility, which seeks comprehensive cooperation on migration policy between the EU and India, with facilitation of people-to-people contacts being of key aspect due to the importance of India as a partner for the EU.

Schengen visas allow the holder to travel freely in the Schengen area for short stays of a maximum of 90 days in any 180-day period. The visas are not purpose-bound, but they do not grant the right to work. The Schengen area consists of 29 European countries (of which 25 are EU states): Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Germany, Estonia, Greece, Spain, France, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Hungary, Malta, Netherlands, Austria, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia, Slovakia, Finland and Sweden, along with Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland.

Last Updated : 29 Apr 2024

Last Updated : 29 Apr 2024 at

30-Second Summary

Planning a trip to Europe and applying for a Schengen visa involves various documents, including a No Objection Certificate (NOC). The NOC for Indians proves that the traveller has commitments in their home country and intends to return after the Schengen visa expires.

This blog provides a comprehensive guide on:

The purpose of a NOC

Who needs it (employees and students),

Detailed steps for obtaining it from employers or educational institutions with samples.

Planning a trip to Europe comes with a lot of paperwork, from booking your flights to making sure you have the right travel insurance . One document you might need for your Schengen Visa Application is called a No Objection Certificate (NOC).

Here's a straightforward guide covering everything you need to know about NOC letter for Schengen visas.

What is a No Objection Certificate for Indians?

A No Objection Certificate (NOC) for Indians is a letter from your employer, school, or university. This letter confirms that you have work or educational commitments in your home country and that they have no objections to you travelling to the Schengen Area country. It shows authorities that you plan to return to your country after your visa expires.

This document, also known as a No Objection Letter for Visa or NOC, is additional proof, along with your flight and hotel reservations , indicating your intention to fulfil responsibilities in your home country. The NOC letter is not always mandatory, but some embassies may request an NOC as part of the visa application process.

Who Needs an NOC Letter for a Schengen Visa?

There are two kinds of No Objection Letters, depending on whether you are employed or a student:

NOC for Employees: The employer writes the NOC on behalf of the company for the employee applying for a Schengen Visa. The NOC confirms that the employee has work responsibilities, will return, and can financially afford the trip to Schengen countries.

NOC for Students: The NOC for students is written by a responsible figure at the university attended by the student, such as the Dean, Registrar, or Head of the Department. The letter states that the student applying for the Schengen Visa is currently studying at the university and is committed to returning to their home country to complete their studies. If a scholarship sponsors the student, the NOC may also mention the financial stability supported by the scholarship.

How to Obtain an NOC Letter from Your Employer or Educational Institution?

Obtaining an NOC letter for a Schengen visa from your employer or educational institution typically involves following a formal process. Here is a general guide on how to obtain an NOC:

For Employees:

Request in Writing or request a meeting: Write a formal letter to your employer requesting the NOC, or you can request a meeting with your employer. Clearly state the purpose for which you need the NOC.

Provide Details: Include your name, employee ID, department, and why you seek the NOC. Also, provide your employer with your travel dates and the purpose of your trip.

Justify Your Request: Explain why you need the NOC and how it will not interfere with your job responsibilities.

Attach Supporting Documents: Attach any documents or letters from the organisation or institution requesting the NOC if required.

Submit to HR or Relevant Department: Submit your letter to the HR department or the relevant department per your organisation's protocol.

Follow Up: Follow up with the concerned department to ensure your request is being processed.

Tip: Obtain a leave approval letter before requesting the No Objection Certificate for a streamlined process.

For Students:

For students, it's important to ask for permission from your professors or adviser to be excused from classes during your travel. Another easy option is planning your trip during university breaks and informing the necessary people about your plans. When you let your adviser know about your travel during a break, getting an NOC from them should be straightforward.

Write a Formal Letter: Draft a formal letter to the head of your educational institution requesting the NOC. If you are pressed for time, try to make an appointment instead.

Include Relevant Details: Provide details such as your name, student ID, course, and the purpose for which you need the NOC.

Mention Duration: If applicable, mention the duration for which you need the NOC.

Attach Supporting Documents: Attach any necessary documents, such as admission letters or job offers.

Submit: Submit the letter to the appropriate authority in your educational institution, such as the registrar or head of your department.

Follow-up: To ensure that your request is being processed and to obtain the NOC in a timely manner.

Tip: Schedule travel during university breaks, if possible, for easier No Objection Certificate approval.

Essential Details in an NOC Letter:

Regardless of whether the NOC letter is from an employer or educational institution, it should contain the following key details:

Date of Issue: The date on which the NOC is issued or written.

Personal Information: Full name, passport details, and other relevant personal information of the applicant.

Travel Details: Purpose of travel, destination within the Schengen zone, and the intended duration of the stay.

Employment/Educational Details : For employees, information about the current position, job responsibilities, and confirmation of continued employment upon return. For students, details of enrollment, course of study, and approval for the absence.

Declaration of No Objection: A clear statement from the employer or educational institution stating that they have no objections to the applicant's travel plans.

Contact Information: Contact details of the person issuing the NOC, including their name, designation, and contact number.

Organisation's Details: Name and address of the employer or educational institution.

Signature and Stamp: The official signature and stamp of the issuing authority for authenticity.

Letterhead: The letter should be on the official letterhead of the organisation.
