Begin your voyage in beautiful Edinburgh, the UK’s second most visited city after London. With streets steeped in history and a thriving cultural scene, the Scottish capital offers the perfect balance between the traditional and contemporary. Take some time to explore this historic capital city before joining MS Maud to begin your adventure northwards. 

Once you've picked up your expedition jacket and settled into your cabin, you'll have a chance to meet your Expedition Team, who'll be your friendly hosts and knowledgeable guides. Then enjoy your first delicious dinner aboard the ship – your adventure has begun.

Highlights of Orkney

Discover the islands’ rich heritage, wildlife, and whisky.

The Orkney Islands' largest town, Kirkwall, is a vibrant place influenced by every era, from the Vikings to World War II.

In the center of this Norse town, visit the regal St. Magnus Cathedral and the adjacent Earl’s Palace to see the stone ruins of this once-grand Renaissance building. Whisky aficionados will enjoy Kirkwall's Highland Park and Scapa distilleries’ sublime single malts.

At the Heart of Neolithic Orkney, a UNESCO World Heritage site, you can delve into the past at the Scara Brae settlement, the mysterious standing stones of Ring of Brodgar, and the Stones of Stenness.

Sea birds such as puffins, gannets, guillemots, kittiwakes, and eagles thrive around the Orkneys. Look out for dolphins, whales, and orca, too.

Far-flung Fair Isle

A scenic stop for bird lovers

Your cruise continues to the Shetland Islands as we venture to remote Fair Isle, known for its birds and knitwear.

The island is home to 27 bird species and is a dream for birders and wildlife photographers. It's a vital stop for migrating seabirds, drawn to the red sandstone cliffs, green fields, and moors.

We’ll attempt to land for the Expedition Team to lead you on a clifftop hike to a lighthouse sitting in a spectacular location. Gain fascinating insights into the life and history of the 65-strong island community at the local museum. You can support Fair Islanders by buying genuine Fair Isle knitwear direct from local makers.

If landing isn’t possible, the scenic cruising is just as spectacular.

Experience life in the capital of Scotland’s northernmost inhabited isles.

We’ll dock alongside Lerwick, the capital of the Shetland Islands, to explore this friendly, Victorian-influenced fishing town.

Navigate the narrow lanes on foot to discover little shops selling local whiskies, woolen sweaters, and fudge. By the old waterfront, you’ll find the Shetland Museum, exploring the area’s rich history. Nearby, see Fort Charlotte and the regal Town Hall.

The wider island is home to remarkable Iron Age villages and the Croft House Museum, where you’ll learn about the hard life of the local crofters.

Keep your binoculars handy as you may spot grey and common seals along Lerwick’s beaches, and local birdlife such as Red-throated Divers, redshanks and curlews.

The wild side of Shetland Islands

Discover sea birds and Vikings in the Northern Shetlands 

The northern Shetland Islands represent the geographical extremity of the British Isles. In these remote areas, we’ll explore according to the conditions and where we find the best opportunities. 

We may visit charming Haroldswick on Unst, where the Vikings reputedly first made landfall in the British Isles. Home to a reconstruction of a Viking longhouse and ship, there’s also a burial mound thought to be the grave of King Harald Fairhair, the village’s namesake.  

We may also take to our expedition boats, exploring hidden coves below towering cliffs. At the UK’s most northerly point, the cliffs of Hermaness National Nature Reserve shelter thousands of breeding seabirds including fulmars, puffins, shags and gannets, so be sure to bring your binoculars.

10th-century Tórshavn

Visit Streymoy in the Faroe Islands

Tórshavn lays on Streymoy, the largest of the Faroe Islands. Founded by Norsemen in the 10th century, Tórshavn (Thor’s Harbor) is one of Northern Europe’s oldest capitals.

Wander along winding cobblestone alleyways and past colorful, turf-roofed houses. In the local museums, you’ll learn about the city’s origins and the flora, fauna, and geology of the Faroe Islands.

Just over a mile north of the town, Svartafoss waterfall tumbles over mossy rocks. And as you walk along the seafront, look out for the Eider Drake and the distinctive Faroese Starling with its beige-tipped wings.

Remote Runavik

Explore wild and rugged Eysturoy island

From Tórshavn, we’ll cruise across to the island of Eysturoy and tiny Runavik on the eastern side of Skálafjørður fjord. This flourishing town has been a haven for ships for many centuries. The Vikings used to dock here, too.

Join the Expedition Team on a kayaking tour of Skálafjørður. At nine miles long, it’s the longest fjord in the Faroe Islands or stretch your legs on one of the many hiking routes. You could follow the relatively easy path through the heather-rich moorland around Lake Toftavatn, known for its birdlife. Hike up the nearby hill for astounding views of the surrounding green peaks.

Relaxing day at sea

Enjoy a relaxing day as we cruise towards Iceland 

As we sail to Heimaey, you'll have time to sit back and swap stories of your adventures so far. Keep your eyes peeled while on deck for some wonderful marine life and seabirds – you can even relax in the hot tub up there at the same time.

The penultimate island on our isle-hopping expedition cruise is Heimaey, off the south coast of Iceland. It's the only inhabited island in the Vestmannaeyjar archipelago. 

Heimaey has a fascinating history involving runaway slaves, murder, revenge, magic, and Barbary pirates, and it still bears the scars of a powerful volcanic eruption in 1973 that nearly destroyed the island.

Visit the Sea Life Trust Beluga Whale Sanctuary, and also hike to see puffins at Stórhöfði, where around 8 million nest every summer. Be sure to check out the volcano, Eldfell – or ‘Fire Mountain’. It’s well worth the effort to climb to its summit, offering incredible views of the town below.

WHAT IS THE BEST MONTH TO SEE THE NORTHERN LIGHTS IN ICELAND?

There isn’t one particular month that comes out on top for northern lights sightings in Iceland. That said, the best time of year to chase the aurora is during the Icelandic winter, from October to March.

Timing your visit to when the skies are at their darkest, for longest, is key to increasing your chances of seeing the northern lights.

This is because the long winter nights give you more opportunities for sightings. Plus, the shimmering aurora stands out more against the dark skies of winter, compared to the light summer nights.

The best time of day to see the northern lights tends to be later in the evening. So it’s worth noting that if you choose a northern lights excursion it will start in the evening, rather than during the day.

WHAT DO I PACK FOR ICELAND?

Iceland is known for its changeable weather. In fact, the locals have a saying, “there is no such thing as bad weather, just the wrong clothes”.

As such, warm layers and waterproofs are recommended, whether you are travelling in summer or winter. That way, come rain or shine, you can get out and about to enjoy Iceland’s natural beauty.

A new year’s to remember, december 2022, an amazing and unique experience.

Our tour was great! Went for our honeymoon and it was everything we wanted. First night we got to see the northern lights which were fantastic! Second day, most certainly our longest, visited several sites (Geysire & Þingvellir) and went snowmobiling on a glacier. Such an amazing and unique experience. The walking tour around Reykjavik was surprisingly educational and our guide pointed out things that we ordinarily would have missed. The NYE dinner was delicious and going out to see the firework displays by (what seemed to be like) everyone was something. Practically had to dodge fireworks! Our 4th day was spent at the Blue Lagoon; perfect after a night of partying! Our last day was nice and relaxing, did some final shopping before we headed off to the airport. Hope to go back & visit Iceland again!

Northern Lights 3 or 4 Nts From Edinburgh

Our 3, 4 or 5 nights Northern Lights break is a great way to try and see this amazing phenomenon. You’ll fly from Edinburgh airport and stay 3 or 4 Nights in the Cabin Hotel or similar in Reykjavik. This popular hotel offers clean and comfortable accommodation, just 15 minutes walk from this fascinating and exciting city centre with countless bars and restaurants. The hotel itself offers a traditional buffet breakfast each morning and has an inviting bar.

On the second night (or night of your choice) you’ll be picked up from your hotel and taken in search of the Northern light. The expert English speaking guide will have done their home work and plotted the best area to see the lights, so you’ll head out of Reykjavik away from the light pollution in search of the dancing lights.

The Northern Lights, also known as the Aurora Borealis are a spectacular natural phenomenon, often seen dancing around in fantastic colours across the Icelandic Arctic sky. They are caused by the interaction of particles from the sun with the upper atmosphere near the North Pole. That creates this wonderful light effect, known as the Aurora Borealis. Of course this tour is depending on weather and sightings are not guaranteed. If you don't see any lights on your tour you are welcome to join the tour again free of charge on the following nights.

This break offers you plenty of time to get a taste of Iceland and explore Reykjavik and whilst the city is fairly small and you can see plenty just walking the city streets, why not take our city tour? Iceland’s stark beauty is breathtaking any time of year, but if you want to see the northern lights, look for Iceland tour packages that depart between September and mid-April. This is when the days are shorter and the nights are at their darkest—perfect conditions for viewing this natural phenomenon. Just remember that seeing the northern lights on tours to Iceland is dependent on a variety of natural factors, including clear skies and high solar activity.

Off-season trips to Iceland are the best time to take a dip in the country’s famous hot pools, most notably the renowned Blue Lagoon. Crowds thin out in late September and October, so you’ll be able to enjoy the geothermal waters without having to contend with the hundreds of visitors who flock to this famous site during peak season.

May through August is a good time to go on guided tours around Iceland if whale watching is on your bucket list. It’s possible to see orcas, minke whales, humpbacks, and more than 20 other species year-round, but June and July are their peak season.

• Icelandic yogurt called skyr. It has a cream-like consistency, little fat, and lots of protein. Icelanders eat it all the time, and you can often find it transformed into a smooth mousse or delicious ice cream for dessert.
• Icelandic lamb, which is considered to be some of the best in the world thanks to the free-roaming sheeps’ healthy, natural diet. Since we get you closer to culture by offering authentic included meals on tour, you’re likely to have an opportunity to try this specialty on all our trips to Iceland.
• Both fresh and dried fish, including herring and cod. In fact, fermented shark is considered an Icelandic specialty, and although it’s rarely eaten anymore, it’s an important part of Iceland’s culinary history. Still, it's a “treat” that should be tried by the very brave on our Iceland tours!
• Rye bread topped with everything from butter and lava salt to smoked salmon and cream cheese.
• Pylsa, Icelandic hot dogs—or more specifically, those from Bæjarins Beztu Pylsur. This Reykjavik establishment has been serving up franks since 1937, and no tours to Iceland are complete until you’ve tasted one. Try it the way a local would and ask for one with everything: sweet mustard, remoulade, and both raw and fried onions.

No matter which Iceland travel packages fill you with wanderlust, bringing the correct attire for the season is important. If you’re setting off to see the northern lights in the off-season, keep in mind that winters in Iceland are generally cold. Packing a warm coat, hat, gloves, and rainwear will keep you comfortable and dry during outdoor sightseeings and nighttime northern lights excursions.

It’s best to pack clothing made of wool, silk, or polypropylene, which will keep you warmer and drier than cotton. Also, crampons—micro spikes that attach to your shoes to give you better traction on frozen ground—may come in handy during the winter months.

Even summer temperatures in Iceland can be chilly, so packing warm layers will ensure you’re ready for any type of weather. And, no matter when you’re planning a trip to Iceland, bringing the correct footwear is key. The capital of Iceland is definitely a hot spot, renowned for its lively pubs and clubs, which draw hundreds of merry-making visitors, particularly during the long, light, bright summer nights.

Reykjavik's growing reputation as a fun tourist destination is enhanced by its fiery but friendly inhabitants, relaxed pace of life, many cultural attractions, and dozens of opportunities for fascinating day trips, not to mention the novelty of bathing in one of the steamy public geothermal swimming baths.

Reykjavik has a small-town atmosphere, its centre easily explored on foot, the quaint whitewashed wooden buildings and colourful houses interspersed with plenty of open space. Even those who come to indulge mainly in the hedonistic nightlife cannot fail to leave Reykjavik feeling refreshed and rejuvenated.

If you’re looking to pack in plenty of top attractions, think the Golden Circle tour, which includes Thingvellir National Park, Gullfoss, Geysir and Skalholt.

Whether you’re out in the countryside or roaming around the remarkably compact capital on your Reykjavík city break, there’s so much to see and do. Don your woollens and see where waterfalls cascade and icy mountains meet. Hit the shops, feast on the finest foods, and discover gorgeous churches and intriguing, historic museums.

In the city of Reykjavík, you’ll stumble across various key landmarks and treasures. Hallgrímskirkja is the Lutheran church with the iconic, imposing height, dominating the skyline. Among a few museums, there’s the Sun Voyager monument and Perlan. The latter doubles as one of the main must-visits and a critically-acclaimed fine dining restaurant.

Back in the first century AD, legendary Viking, Ingolfur Arnarson, named the settlement he founded on a southwestern peninsula Reykjavik, meaning 'Smokey Bay'. The smoke he found wafting over the area, however, had nothing to do with pollution, but rather the bubbling, boiling natural geysers and geothermal springs that now underlie the modern capital of Iceland. This source of heat and water has ensured that Reykjavik has no need to burn fuels to warm its heart, and the crisp, clean air is delightful.

The sky is not always blue, however: Reykjavik receives more than its fair share of rainy weather blown in from the sea, and during the long, bleak winter its northern latitude ensures that the sun makes no more than a brief appearance every day.

Reykjavik's setting on the southwest corner of Iceland is another drawcard. Panoramic views surround the majestic Mount Esja rising behind the bay, while vistas stretch as far as the crystalline Snaefellsjokull Glacier to the west across the Atlantic. The city is well-positioned to act as a springboard for southern Iceland, and many of the country's most popular attractions are within easy reach.

The best way to travel around Reykjavik is on the excellent bus service that covers downtown and the outer suburbs from the central terminals at Hlemmur and Laekjartorg. Buses run from around 7am to 11pm on weekdays and less frequently on weekends. Passengers should pay the exact fare to drivers, as they are not permitted to give change. Bicycles are an extremely popular form of transport and the city has a network of cycle lanes. Car hire is recommended as there is little traffic congestion and local drivers are typically considerate. The Hreyfill taxi app is another option.

There may be limited sunlight in the northern city of Reykjavik, but the locals here really know how to make good use of those long, cold, and dark winter nights. The bright lights of the bars and clubs that line the streets will blow visitors away, and they can heat things up even more on the dance floor.

Due to the high cost of alcohol, the nightlife only gets going very late, as most Icelanders tend to have a few drinks at home before hitting the town. Travellers arriving in Reykjavik by air should not pass up the opportunity to buy cheap alcohol in the duty-free store at the airport.

Once sufficiently warmed up for the night, travellers can head to trendy Laugavegur, where most of Reykjavik's 100 or so bars and clubs are located, dotted around the strip and its side streets. On busy Friday and Saturday nights, it's not uncommon for the street to be filled with people all night long. On a side note, the drinking age in Iceland is 20.

Although a beautiful, cosmopolitan, and vibrant city, many of Iceland's best tourist attractions are actually located outside Reykjavik. Luckily for visitors, Iceland is a small country and none of the tourist attractions mentioned here requires a significant amount of travelling to get to.

As far as attractions in Reykjavik are concerned, travellers shouldn't miss the Botanical Gardens, which are full of interesting indigenous plants and trees; the Einar Jonsson Museum, which displays works by Iceland's greatest sculptor; Hallgrimskirkja, one of the weirdest, most grandiose churches on the planet; and, to satisfy any Viking curiosity, the National Museum, Saga Museum, and the Reykjavik City Museum.

As visitors enter the remarkable hinterland, the real tourist gems can be found, and luckily the south of the country is home to most of Iceland's top tourist attractions. Travellers should be sure to check out the Blue Lagoon, a manmade geothermal spring and spa; Geysir, the world's original hot spring; the truly transcendent Gullfoss Falls; Thingvellir National Park, with its incredible hiking trails; and Jokulsarlon, a glacial lagoon full of eerie, luminous-blue icebergs.

No matter what travellers decide to see and do in the 'Land of Fire and Ice', one thing is for sure: they mustn't forget to take a camera along, as Iceland is a country uniquely full of sights that beggar belief. Travellers should also consider arming themselves with the Reykjavik City Card, which gives discounts on tourist attractions and restaurants and allows unlimited bus transport.

Although the national diet is quickly diversifying, fish and lamb are still consumed in great quantities in Iceland, and reportedly it can reportedly be quite hard to find a vegetarian option on restaurant menus.

Despite this, Reykjavik's restaurant scene is exciting and becoming increasingly cosmopolitan as restaurateurs rush to embrace fusion cooking, attempting to offer fresh interpretations of international dishes using local ingredients.

Traditional fare, available everywhere, but probably only tempting for the more gastronomically adventurous, includes harðfiskur (dried fish-meat, eaten with butter); svið (singed sheep's head); slátur (sausage made from blood and offal, like black pudding); hrútspungar (pickled ram's testicles); and hákarl (putrefied shark-meat).

There is also, controversially for some, the option of eating whale meat while in Iceland. And if you really want to push the boat out, you can get it with some grated puffin on the side. Those with tamer appetites will be relieved to know that a staple of the Icelandic diet is the pylsa, a good, old-fashioned hot dog, served with fried onions, ketchup, and mustard.

Despite its extreme north Atlantic location, Reykjavik's temperate sub-polar oceanic climate is not as cold as might be expected, its average mid-winter temperatures being no lower than those in New York City. Winter temperatures average between 28F (-2C) and 38F (3C). This is because the Icelandic coastal weather is tempered by the warm waters of the Gulf Stream. The city's coastal position does, however, also mean it is prone to wind, and gales are common in winter. Summer temperatures in July, the warmest month, peak at around 59F (15C).

"Our family of four, including two adult children, took the Bicycling: Day Trips to Paradise in Canada. This trip is entirely outsourced to the owners of the inn, there are no Road Scholar employees involved in the trip. Two of us have taken bicycle trips all over the world and the bicycling component of this trip was disorganized, haphazard and almost unsafe. We all filled out forms giving details regarding our bicycle fitting months before the trip. On the first day, the leader Stephen, went around the room and asked the same questions and said everyone would get fitted in the morning before we began the first ride. The morning brought a rack of bikes, all different types in various levels of readiness. There were road bikes, hybrid bikes, mountain bikes and e-bikes. The rides were all on paved surfaces and the mountain bikes were heavy and the additional suspension added weight. The bike I received had rust on the chain and rear sprocket. When I asked about it, was told they were waiting for another van to show up with tools and equipment. Once it arrived, they gave me the lubricant to spray on the rust. My wife’s bike would not shift into the high gear on the front sprocket. Instead of adjusting the derailleur, they suggested spraying it with lubricant. Our one son is over six feet and needed a larger frame bike, even though he detailed it in the bike form months ago, there was no bike to fit him. One of the guides, then went home and brought a larger bike that was a full suspension mountain bike for him. The bike was very heavy, hard to control on the road and he felt unsafe. After two days, one of the guides convinced Stephen that they could adjust a hybrid bike to fit him. Clearly there was no work done to prepare the bikes for the trip. Many of the bikes needed adjusting and all needed lubricant to function easily. For every day, there was a tray of snacks placed out for us to take along the ride. None of the bikes had any baskets or attached bags, so if you didn’t bring a small day pack, there was no way to carry the snacks. For lunch on the rides, they brought exactly one sandwich for each rider. Since most of us get hungry while doing a day of exercise, it would have been helpful to have a few extras. On one day, they ran out of sandwiches and one of the leaders that were riding with us did not get lunch. Do NOT take this trip if you are expecting it to be a bicycling trip. We have used VBT and Discovery Bicycle Tours many times over the past 25 years and they are excellent bike tour companies. Lastly, after sharing these details with Road Scholar after the trip, their response was weak at best. After doing the full reviews and having to call them, their response was to give us $200 credit after spending $8000 on this trip. Not only was that insulting, they assumed that I would take another trip with their organization."

"We spent two wonderful weeks touring several of the best destinations in Portugal & Spain with a group of 16 people. Our guide (Fredy) was from Spain and intimately familiar with the region, including its rich history, attractions, and food/beverages. The tour was well-paced using a combinations of private vehicles (small buses and cabs), trains, and an airplane ride as well as a fair amount of walking to get around these two beautiful countries. We extended our stay in Lisbon to see more attractions and took a side trip to Fatima, Obidos, and Nazare that was also excellent. Would have liked to have a bit more time in a couple of the cities, but we'll just have to plan another trip!"

Scotland Tour Selection Trips

• If you want to learn about whisky, do a distillery tour (Auchentoshan is highly recommended) and then get the "malt of the month" in every pub you go to. It's inexpensive and every pub will have a different one. 
• If you want to feel like a local, spend at least 3 days in the same place, and go to the same coffee shop and pub every day. By the third day, you'll be treated as a regular. The only place this doesn't work is in downtown Edinburgh, which is a major tourist hub.
• Pubs and drinking are seen as a nice, relaxing way to unwind and spend some time in the evening where it's nice and warm and friendly. Though the Scots do drink regularly, but it's seen as a social, regular part of everyday life. They are not really into crazy binge drinking. But whatever you choose, don't try to keep up! Remember that people can drink legally from the age of 18, so by the time they're in their mid-20s, most people are done with the crazy party life.
• The Scottish accent is notoriously difficult to understand. But it’s ok to ask anyone you don’t understand to repeat themselves. They know their accent is strong and will slow down if you politely ask them to repeat it.
• In terms of the weather, prepare for rain! Mist at the very least. It will be cloudy. However, if you go during the summer, you can expect the sun to be up from 4am to 11pm, so hit the outdoor seating!
• The cardinal rule if you're visiting Scotland for the first time, is that it's NOT ENGLAND. The entire country is called the United Kingdom and Scotland is a part of it, and England is a different part.

Is there a language barrier in Scotland?

Depending on the region of Scotland you’re traveling in, it may be extremely difficult to discern what people are saying. English is the main language, however the accent can be notoriously difficult to decipher.

This is a great reason to travel on a tour in Scotland - you and your travel companions will lean on each other to help navigate the accent, and your tour guide will be a useful safety net. Scottish people are aware that their accent can be hard to understand and are generally patient with being asked to repeat themselves.

What is the weather like in Scotland?

Scotland weather is quite variable region by region. If you’re traveling near the coast you can expect fairy cool and windy conditions almost year round. Due to being so far north, during the summertime Scotland experiences very long days, and in Scotland’s northernmost region, there are a few days out of the year with 24 hour sunlight. If you’re traveling during the winter time, expect regular snowfall and temperatures in the 40s (Fahrenheit).

Spring and autumn are highly recommended times to visit, where the weather is less extreme than during the summer and winter. You’ll see temperatures in the 50s and 60s, with intermittent sunshine, and it will be mostly dry.

As far as what to wear, given the variability and the cooler climate, layers are going to be your best friend any time of year in Scotland!

5.   A WHISKY TASTING

 A trip to Scotland would not be complete without a taste of its most famous beverage: a dram of genuine, single-malt Scotch. Luckily, there are many opportunities to not only get a taste of whisky (not whiskey!), but also learn about its creation process. There are over 100 licensed distilleries in Scotland, each with their own unique history and fiercely guarded trade secrets, and the majority of them offer some sort of visitor experience. In particular, we recommend a tour at the Glenlivet - one of Scotland’s most famous distilleries that began as an illicit smuggling operation.

4.   THE ROYAL RESIDENCES OF EDINBURGH

A walk through the streets of Edinburgh transports you back in time, in no small part due to the capital’s two castles. In the direct heart of the city looms Edinburgh Castle, an imposing stone fortress that sits on top of an extinct volcano. A trip to the castle will not only reward you with an incredible view of the entire city, but a chance to learn about the building’s intriguing and bloody history. The castle has been a royal residence since the 12th century, and for a small fee, you can enter and see Mary Queen of Scots’ private quarters, as well as the infamous Scottish Crown Jewels.

You must be sure to also stop by Edinburgh’s second castle: Holyrood Palace, an active royal residence. Holyrood lies at the opposite end of the Royal Mile, the historic street that connects the two castles, and when the Royal Family is not in town you can take a tour of its decadent rooms and haunted ruins of a cathedral. A detailed guided audio tour will fascinate any visitor, though history buffs will be particularly delighted. The entire castle staff is required to have a thorough understanding of English history, and visitors are encouraged to ask questions.

3. EILEAN DONAN CASTLE

This awe-inspiring structure falls on the border of the wild highlands and is often the image of the iconic Scottish castle. Only accessible by an ancient stone bridge, Eilean Donan is a built on a small island in the icy waters of a saltwater loch. The now isolated fortress was once a centerpiece in hundreds of years of clan conflict and violence, and the weight of this history runs deeply through the castle’s veins.  It is still privately owned and maintained by a member of the MaCrae clan.

2. ISLE OF SKYE

The Isle of Skye is home to some of the most spectacular natural vistas in all of Scotland. This harsh and isolated island has long been heralded as a place of magic, and is the birthplace of hundreds of myths about giants, faeries, and kelpies. A visit to Skye would not be complete without a trip to the enchanted Fairy Pools, a hike up the cliffs of Kilt Rock, and a visit to the see the mysterious stones of Storr. After a day in the outdoors, be sure to warm up with a warm cup of tea and some fish and chips in the charming town of Portree.

1. THE ROYAL MILE

The Royal Mile is a cultural hotspot in the heart of Edinburgh’s Old Town, with no limit of things to do. The best place for shopping and dining, the Royal Mile is lined with some of the best traditional Scottish pubs and shops selling typical Scottish goods, from wool sweaters to shortbread to haggis. The cobblestone mile itself is impressive and physically unique as it has been largely unaltered since it was formalized in 1816.

One especially interesting element of the Mile is its well preserved “closes”, the narrow walking paths which used to lead to residential areas. As the busy road is popular with tourists, you can expect to encounter some authentic bagpipe playing, and the sight of several men in kilts.

Some of the unique buildings on the Royal Mile include the gorgeous Gothic St. Giles’ Cathedral, the old Scottish Parliament, and a church converted into a craft market. At night, the Royal Mile is home to some of the city’s best ghost tours, including trips underground to see full streets that were built over during the plague.
