Cruise Terminal Project

This visionary project was set in motion in response to a proposal from the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways.

The Vishakhapatnam Port Trust (VPT) had set the total project cost at ₹77 crores. Of this amount, the Ministry of Tourism committed to providing 50 percent of the funding, which equates to ₹38.50 crores. The Ministry of Tourism’s Role

The Ministry of Tourism played a vital role by approving partial funding for the development of the Cruise-Cum Cargo Terminal at the channel berth in the outer harbor of Visakhapatnam Port. This support came under the Scheme of Assistance to Central Agencies for Tourism Infrastructure Development during the financial year 2018-19.

It’s worth highlighting that out of the approved Ministry of Tourism funding of ₹38.50 crores, a significant sum of ₹29.91 crores, making up 77.6 percent of the approved funding, has already been disbursed and fully utilized by Vishakhapatnam Port Trust (VPT).

  • Mooring Dolphins: Four mooring dolphins are in place, with two on each side, extending the total length to an impressive 300 meters.

  • The Vizag International Cruise Terminal has the capacity to accommodate 2,000 passenger cruise ships.
  • Services are set to commence in November 2023, with the arrival of a passenger vessel heading to Andaman.

The Rs 96 crore, Vizag International Cruise Terminal (VICT) is nearing completion in Andhra Pradesh.

The terminal is set to establish Visakhapatnam as a prominent destination on the international tourism map, drawing foreign tourists to the 'city of destiny'.

Cruise services are set to commence from the VICT in November 2023, with the arrival of a passenger vessel heading to Andaman.

According to M Angamuthu, chairperson of the Visakhapatnam Port Authority (VPA), the objective is to attract international tourists and put Vishakapatnam on the global cruise tourism map.

The completion of VICT will play a significant role in achieving this goal.

Highlighting the potential of Visakhapatnam's hinterland, Angamuthu mentioned the presence of beautiful coastlines, lush hills, ancient temples, and Buddhist sites. These attractions make the region a promising destination for tourists seeking diverse experiences.

Regarding the business model, VPA will charge each passenger $6, while the cruise companies will be required to pay $0.085 per gross registered tonnage (GRT).

The VICT, a collaboration between VPA and the Ministry of Tourism, Government of India, has the capacity to accommodate 2,000 passenger cruise ships.

Plans are underway to make VICT a cruise port of call, in partnership with cruise lines and the Chennai Port or Puducherry government, according to Angamuthu.

The VPA is currently in contact with three cruise lines, namely Cordelia, Royal Caribbean, and MSC Cruises, as per The Hindu report .

In 2022, the VPA successfully handled approximately 15 voyages between Visakhapatnam-Puducherry-Chennai. During these voyages, a total of 8,645 passengers embarked and 13,814 passengers disembarked.

However, the authorities are cautiously optimistic about the future success of the cruise terminal.

The success of the cruise terminal will greatly depend on the tourism policy of the state government and its proactive approach to promoting tourism circuits in the surrounding areas.

Currently, the state government does not permit liquor and casinos onboard cruise liners, as confirmed by the owner of a major tour operating company.

Existing cruise packages available from India include routes such as Mumbai-High seas-Goa-Mumbai, Mumbai-Diu-Mumbai, Chennai-Trincomalee-Chennai, Mumbai to Venice, Mumbai to Male, Mumbai to Athens, Kolkata to Bangladesh, and Mumbai to Singapore.

In collaboration with cruise lines, the VPA has plans to expand its services to include destinations like Chennai, Colombo/Trincomalee, Singapore, and Bangladesh. Additionally, they are exploring the possibility of offering coastal cruises to Orissa and the Sunderbans.

Vizag International Cruise Terminal

To cater to the growing demand for cruise tourism, the existing dock in Visakhapatnam has undergone significant enhancements.

The dock has been extended, reinforced, and refurbished, resulting in a berth that spans approximately 180 m and features four mooring dolphins.

Artist's impression of Vizag International Cruise Terminal. (Twitter)

With a depth of around 9.5 m, the upgraded dock can now accommodate cruise liner vessels with a size and capacity of approximately 1 lakh GRT.

This expansion opens up opportunities for larger ships to visit Visakhapatnam, further boosting the city's tourism potential.

The total area of the facility is approximately 12,660 sqm, with the modern terminal building covering a built-up area of around 4,580 sqm.

According to A C Vikash, the superintending engineer (Civil) of VPA, the ground floor of the terminal building occupies a built-up area of approximately 3,074 sqm, while the first floor measures about 1,383 sqm.

Similar to airports, the building features separate entrances for arrivals and departures. It will also offer amenities such as cafeterias, spacious lounges, and duty-free shopping stores.

Customs and immigration officials will have their own designated area within the building, and security will be handled by the CISF.

The well-lit building, designed to resemble a ship, will feature modern facilities such as infrared temperature scanners, elevators, escalators, and ample parking space. The parking area will be able to accommodate at least seven buses, around 70 cars, and 40 two-wheelers.

VICT provides top-notch port facilities and efficient services for cruise ships. The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways has issued guidelines on cruise tariffs, and VPA will consider offering discounts after further examination.

Cruises from/to Visakhapatnam, India

Visakhapatnam, india cruise port.

Visakhapatnam is a seaport city nestled in the rolling hills of the Eastern Ghats. It is also known as Vizag or Waltair, depending on the native language, and is the largest state in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh, which is located on the eastern shores of India. With more than 2 million people, the primary religion of the region is Hindu, followed by Islam and Christianity. While very few natives practice Buddhism—less than one percent—a strong history of Buddhist devotion can be observed in the many statues and temples throughout the city. It faces the Bay of Bengal, exhibiting a stunning shoreline with a number of delightful beaches. These unspoiled, endless stretches of sand and surf are great for long walks, swimming, or partaking in various water sports. Tourists are also interested in viewing the beautifully majestic Araku Valley and the impressive Borra caves.

  • The Simhachalam Temple dates back to the 11 th century and is an incredible Buddhist structure that lies on top of a hill and promotes the universal ideals of peace and serenity.
  • Yaranda Beach is a calming, quiet beach with bubbling tides and soft, white sand. While swimming is not allowed, there is much enjoyment to be had just taking in the sights and soothing sounds.
  • Of the many museums, the INS Kurusura Submarine Museum, is very special. It’s based in a giant decommissioned sub and the entire inside has basically been left intact.
  • The Araku Tribal Museum is a place to see and learn about the native tribal people of Araku, and observe their art and culture through a wide variety of displays.

Visakhapatnam: Rs 96-Crore International Cruise Terminal To Be Inaugurated On 4 September, To Boost Tourism

international cruise terminal visakhapatnam

The long-awaited Vizag International Cruise Terminal (VICT) will be inaugurated by Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal on 4 September.

The VICT is located on the premises of the Visakhapatnam Port Authority (VPA).

According to an official release from the VPA, Sonowal will inaugurate a total of four projects worth Rs 333.56 crore on 4 September.

One of these projects is the VICT, which was developed with an investment of Rs96.05 crore. The Union Tourism Ministry contributed Rs38.50 crore towards its development.

The terminal can accommodate passenger vessels with a capacity of 2,000 passengers per vessel and a draft of 8.1 metres.

According to M Angamuthu, chairperson of the Visakhapatnam Port Authority (VPA), the objective is to attract international tourists and put Vishakapatnam on the global cruise tourism map.

The completion of VICT will play a significant role in achieving this goal.

Highlighting the potential of Visakhapatnam’s hinterland, Angamuthu mentioned the presence of beautiful coastlines, lush hills, ancient temples, and Buddhist sites. These attractions make the region a promising destination for tourists seeking diverse experiences.

Regarding the business model, VPA will charge each passenger $6, while the cruise companies will be required to pay $0.085 per gross registered tonnage (GRT).

In addition to the VICT, the Union Minister will also open three other projects. One of them is the “covered storage shed” at the R-11 area, constructed at a cost of ₹33.80 crore. This shed has the capacity to store 84,000 tons of bulk and bagged cargo. The purpose of the covered shed is to reduce pollution caused by storing open cargo in bulk, as stated by a VPA official. The revamped berth of OR 1 will also be inaugurated, reports The Hindu .

According to a Port official, the inauguration of OR 1, one of the three berths, will take place on September 4. The remaining berths will be inaugurated by October 31, 2024.

The Truck Parking Terminal (TPT) will be the fourth project. It will be built on a 20-acre area and will require an investment of Rs 36.05 crore. The terminal will have the capacity to accommodate 666 vehicles.

A cruise to nowhere: Royal Caribbean sailing canceled after guests boarded

international cruise terminal visakhapatnam

A Royal Caribbean International Alaska voyage became a cruise to nowhere over the weekend, with the line canceling the sailing after guests had already boarded.

The cruise line’s Radiance of the Seas ship experienced propulsion issues, forcing it to shorten and eventually scrap the weeklong itinerary, according to notices shared with guests. The sailing was originally set to depart from Vancouver on Friday.

Charlene Chong, who was on board with her husband, their 3-year and 11-month-old children, and her parents, said passengers were notified Saturday afternoon that the cruise was canceled. The 34-year-old teacher and her husband previously took a cruise for their honeymoon, but this marked their first trip with Royal Caribbean.

“My parents had wanted to go to Alaska for a really long time,” said Chong, who lives in Vancouver.

The cruise line warned guests several days before boarding that the ship had a “technical issue with its propulsion system,” according to an email sent to passengers that Chong shared with USA TODAY. The line later pushed the departure back by two days to allow more time for repairs.

Royal Caribbean said boarding would proceed as planned but that the terminal would close Friday evening due to U.S. Customs and Border Protection rules. Passengers would not be able to leave until the ship arrived at Icy Strait Point.

“We were going stir crazy a little bit,” said Chong.

Royal Caribbean gave guests onboard credit worth two days of their fare, a future cruise credit of the same amount, complimentary drinks and other compensation, another email said.

According to Chong, the ship sailed toward a nearby cargo port, but the captain announced Saturday afternoon that the sailing could not proceed and that guests would need to disembark by Sunday at 4 p.m. Chong said she and her family were “lucky” they were local, but she saw other guests scrambling to change their flights and find accommodations.

Your cruise was canceled: Now what?

“We understand the disappointment due to this unfortunate turn of events,” the cruise line said in a letter shared with guests. “We truly extend our sincerest apologies for the continued unforeseen disruptions to your vacation.”

Royal Caribbean gave them their money back as onboard credit with any remaining amount refunded, increased their future cruise credit to 100% of their fare and kept its open-bar policy for the remaining time on board. The line also offered to reimburse trip change fees up to $250 for guests traveling domestically and $400 for international travel and additional reimbursements for hotel and transportation costs, among other compensation.

“Due to a technical issue, we have made the difficult decision to cancel the April 26 sailing," a Royal Caribbean spokesperson said in an emailed statement. "Guests will receive a full refund and 100% future cruise credit, and have been notified directly.” The spokesperson did not comment on the specifics of Chong's experience.

The ship will resume service for its May 3 sailing.

After they got home, Chong and her family booked a trip to Mexico instead – though her parents decided not to join as they were “a bit exhausted by the whole ordeal.” For now, she’s not inclined to use the future cruise credit. “I would like to go to Alaska,” she said. “I'm not sure if I want to go with them.”

Cruise company backs Alaska Railroad’s plan to replace Seward dock

Seward Harbor

The Alaska Railroad Corp. is moving forward with plans to replace a nearly 60-year-old passenger dock in Seward. The $137 million project is for one of three docks in the city operated by the company and it handles all of Seward’s cruise ships.

Alaska Railroad Company external affairs director Meghan Clemens said putting in a new dock is overdue.

“We’re looking at this investment as a 50 year asset for Seward. And to that end, we want to be sure that this new dock is going to be able to accommodate growth into the future as that works for both the industry, and for Seward and the Kenai Peninsula,” she said.

The proposed project includes an almost 748-foot floating dock and 60,000-square-foot terminal building. While the planned dock is only slightly longer than the existing one, the new terminal would be more than double the size of the current building.

Local developer The Seward Company designed the space large enough to hold all cruise ships that sail the state now. Clemens said the terminal building — which also acts as a transition space for cruise passengers in the summer — will serve more than just tourists.

“We think it’s both going to serve customers as they’re embarking or disembarking on the cruise ship, as well as be a great asset for the community of Seward that holds a lot of community events at the terminal building during the offseason,” she said.

The project is being funded by revenue bonds, which must be approved by the state Legislature. The Legislature approved $60 million in bonds for the project in 2022, and the railroad company requested additional bonds worth $75 million this year.

House Bill 122 and Senate Bill 105 are currently in the House and Senate finance committees, respectively. Passing the bills will allow the company to take on the bonds to fund the project. No state funds will go towards the project.

To secure the debt from the bonds, the company signed a 30-year agreement with cruise ship company Royal Caribbean International. This commits the cruise line to using the dock throughout that time and guarantees the minimum amount of money needed each year to pay off the debt. Clemens says an agreement of this length is unprecedented in the state.

According to a port schedule from Cruise Lines International Association, a trade group for cruise lines that Royal Caribbean is a member of, Royal Caribbean cruise ship Radiance of the Seas is scheduled to stop in Seward 10 times this season. Last year, 87 cruise ships went through the docks, bringing nearly 200,000 people to the coastal community, according to a press release from the railroad company.

If the Legislature approves the additional bonds, construction is slated to begin in the fall of 2025, with the goal to open the following summer.
