Definition of journey  (Entry 2 of 2)

intransitive verb

transitive verb

Did you know?

The Latin adjective diurnus means “pertaining to a day, daily”; English diurnal stems ultimately from this word. When Latin developed into French, diurnus became a noun, jour, meaning simply “day” The medieval French derivative journee meant either “day” or “something done during the day,” such as work or travel. Middle English borrowed journee as journey in both senses, but only the sense “a day’s travel” survived into modern usage. In modern English, journey now refers to a trip without regard to the amount of time it takes. The verb journey developed from the noun and is first attested in the 14th century.

LABYRINTH/C/05JUN97/MN/MACOR California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco has installed a "Labyrinth" to the front entrance walkway. Hospital Chaplains, Clifford Smith, left and Annagret Zander try out the maze. Chronicle Photo: Michael

Running and Returning

The maze-like path of the labyrinth, leading in and out of a sacred center, echoes an ancient kabbalistic idea.

By Rabbi Jill Hammer

A labyrinth is a maze-like path that winds through several circuits toward a sacred center. But unlike a maze, a labyrinth has only one path, leading to one center at its heart. The term comes from the Greek labyrinthos , but the structural form can be found from Ireland to Turkey and India.

I’ve walked labyrinths in Ireland and California, at the National Cathedral in Washington, and at retreat centers. I’ve built labyrinths for Yom Kippur , to embody the journey of teshuvah (return or repentance), and for Tisha B’Av , as a meditation on losing and regaining a sense of sacred space. When I watch people enter a labyrinth and navigate its coils, it’s clear to me something unique and powerful is unfolding. The labyrinth is a pilgrimage practice that can happen anywhere, a way of making a journey to the heart.

Jews have long related to the labyrinth as an experience of journey or pilgrimage. We find the labyrinth as an illustration in Jewish texts, including the Taj Torah , a 15th-century Hebrew manuscript from Yemen, which features the six-circuit Jericho labyrinth depicting the Israelites conquering the city across a labyrinthine path. The Farhi Bible, written in Provence in the 14th century, depicts a similar labyrinth. That these images are found in Jewish texts suggest they are not only decorative, but meant to be sacred.

We might even imagine that reading the Torah is itself a winding journey along a labyrinth. Since sacred text is a crucial way in to Jewish spiritual practice, it makes sense that we find labyrinths in texts. Yet embodied journey is a core Jewish practice. From ancient Israel to Morocco to Eastern Europe, Jews have used the practice of pilgrimage — to the Temple, or to holy tombs — as a way of showing devotion or to pray for a deep desire.

We could even see the High Holiday season out of which we have just emerged as a kind of labyrinth in time, spiraling in toward the sacred center of Yom Kippur and then out again into the world with the festival of Sukkot . At this moment in the Jewish calendar , it’s as if we’ve just left a huge labyrinth and are at the exit, integrating the insights we discovered.

Jews aren’t strangers to journeys of the spirit. Sefer Yetzirah (the “Book of Creation”), an ancient work of Jewish mysticism , speaks of “running and returning,” a phrase which can refer to the internal traveling we do when trying to connect to spirit. The heart “runs,” in the words of Sefer Yetzirah, and we “return to the place” — back to presence, to focus, to the Divine. We may experience an internal shift as movement, as arrival or return.

The center of the labyrinth may seem like the point, but for me, it’s often the return to the entrance, after the journey in and out, that is most affecting. That moment is the embodiment of running and returning — following the thread into the depths, and then coming back to ordinary life bearing the trace of a sacred encounter. A labyrinthine image of concentric sefirot , the 10 divine emanations enumerated by Jewish mysticism, is found in a 14th century commentary on Sefer Yetzirah, suggesting I’m not the only one who has made a connection between the labyrinth and the running and returning of the Jewish mystics.

There’s something about making a journey with the body that invites us to open the heart and mind. The Talmud seems to agree. In Tractate Rosh Hashanah, we find a teaching that one who changes their place, just like one who does teshuvah, can improve their destiny. But don’t take my word for it. Commenting on the practice of walking a labyrinth, Rabbi Laura Duhan Kaplan writes : “Don’t bother trying to read about it … Just walk, and see which metaphors come alive for you.”

Traveling a labyrinth is a way to bring alive the pilgrimage practices and mystical ascents of our ancestors, no matter where we are or what sacred spaces we have access to. I recommend it — and, if its popularity across space, time, and civilizations is any indication, you’ll likely meet a few fellow travelers along the way.

The best-case scenario is to pay your taxes in full by the due date of the tax return because otherwise both a failure to pay penalty and interest may continue to be assessed until it is fully paid.

If you are unable to pay your taxes in full, the IRS has several options that you can consider based on your financial situation.

Here’s a summary of some of the options available and links to get more information and how start the process of making the type of request you choose.

  • Payment Plans – The IRS provides a variety of payment plan options, including the ability to apply online for a payment plan. The benefit to applying online is that once you complete your online application, you will receive immediate notification of whether your payment plan has been approved. Also, if you run into trouble, this option allows you to chat online with an IRS assistor to help you finish the process or get other guidance on further options. Setup fees may be higher if you apply for a payment plan by phone, mail, or in-person. You can also easily apply for and maintain a payment plan by using your IRS online account.

The availability of a payment plan will depend on your income, the amount owed, and how long it will take to pay. In some cases, there are both short-term and long-term options available, again, depending on the amount you owe. In some cases, you can set up a payment plan to automatically deduct payments from banking accounts, paychecks, or you can make payments electronically or mail-in payments yourself. In most instances, you can also choose your payment date, too.

  • Fees – Payment agreement fees are required for most long-term plans . However, if you qualify as a low-income taxpayer, you may request a waiver of those fees . Also, depending on the payment method you choose, there may be processing fees charged by the bank or credit card company.
  • Can’t pay now? – If the IRS determines that you cannot pay any of your tax debt at this time, they may report your account as currently not collectible (CNC) and temporarily delay collection until your financial condition improves. Being designated as CNC does not mean the debt goes away, it means the IRS has determined you cannot afford to pay the debt at this time. Prior to approving your request to delay collection, the IRS may ask you to complete a Collection Information Statement ( Form 433-F PDF , Form 433-A PDF or Form 433-B PDF and provide proof of your financial status (this may include information about your assets and your monthly income and expenses).

You should know that if the IRS does delay collecting from you, your debt will increase because penalties and interest continue to be charged until you pay the full amount. During a temporary delay, the IRS will again review your ability to pay, generally annually. The IRS may also file a Notice of Federal Tax Lien to protect the government’s interest in your assets.

You should also review our TAS Currently Not Collectible page and video , before you start the process. Also, be sure to file all prior year tax returns (if you were required to file a return), even if you can’t pay the amount you owe on any returns right now, before requesting this option. You can find filing help options on our page above as well.

If the IRS decides you can make some type of payment and you still disagree, you do have options.

  • Offer In Compromise – A Doubt as to Collectability or an Effective Tax Administration offer in compromise (OIC) allows you to settle your tax debt for less than the full amount you owe. It may be a legitimate option if you can’t pay your full tax liability or doing so creates a financial hardship.

The OIC process is not for everyone and generally requires a non-refundable fee, so explore all other payment options before submitting an OIC. If you hire a tax professional to help you file an offer, be sure to check his or her qualifications.

Review our TAS OIC page and video about OICs before you start the process. You can also read the IRS Offer in Compromise Booklet and use the IRS Offer in Compromise Pre-Qualifier Tool to see if you may be eligible to make an offer, and the see links in the “Resources” section below, for additional information on OICs.

Need more help?

  • Collection activities suspended: The IRS is generally prohibited from enforced collection whenever a request for a payment plan or an OIC is pending. Also, the IRS’ time to collect is suspended or prolonged whenever a request for a payment plan or an OIC is pending. Refer to Tax Topic No. 204 .
  • Low Income Taxpayer Clinics (LITC) assistance – LITCs can potentially represent you before the IRS or in court on audits, appeals, tax collection matters, and other tax disputes. Services are provided for free or for a small fee. In order to qualify for assistance from an LITC, generally a taxpayer’s income must be below a certain threshold, and the amount in dispute with the IRS is usually less than $50,000.
  • Taxpayer Advocate Service – if your problem is causing financial difficulty for you, your family, or your business, or you or your business is faced with an immediate threat of adverse action, use the TAS Qualifier Tool to see if you qualify for TAS assistance.

Mayflower II passes through Cape Cod Canal on its journey to Plymouth

By Neal Riley

Updated on: April 11, 2024 / 3:02 PM EDT / CBS Boston

PLYMOUTH - The Mayflower II is returning to Massachusetts, and you can track its journey home online.

The 67-year-old wooden ship, a replica of the vessel that brought the Pilgrims to America in 1620, departed Connecticut Wednesday morning at about 10:30 a.m. It spent the winter docked at the Mystic Seaport Museum, undergoing routine maintenance and getting a fresh coat of paint.

Mayflower II travels through Cape Cod Canal

The journey from Mystic to Plymouth Harbor takes between 20 and 25 hours, and is dependent on many factors including tide and weather conditions. The Mayflower II  passed through the Cape Cod Canal at 7 a.m. on Thursday, and the heavy fog at the time made for a ghostly scene.

Track the Mayflower II

When the Mayflower II leaves from Mystic, towed by the Weymouth-based Stasinos Marine, you can track its journey on this website .

The Plimoth Patuxet Museums' Facebook page will also provide updates.

See the Mayflower II in Plymouth

The 106-foot ship arrived at the State Pier in Plymouth Thursday and it's expected to open up to the public on Saturday at 9 a.m.

Since the Mayflower II landed in Plymouth in 1957, more than 25 million have stepped on board to visit it, the museum says. The replica had $11.2 million worth of repairs finished in 2020.

Tickets to board the Mayflower II are $19 for adults, $17.10 for seniors and $13 for children.

Spring is hummingbird migration season: Interactive map shows where they will be

As north america moves into spring, hummingbirds are migrating north. an interactive map by hummingbird central uses crowdsourced sightings to show their path..

journey or return

The great North American eclipse is behind us, flowers in the northern states are starting to bloom and all the signs of spring are here . That means hummingbirds are on the move.

Known for their long, nectar-sipping beaks and ultra-fast wing flutters, hummingbirds are only found in the Americas.

Many hummingbird species migrate north in late winter and spring after spending the cold winters in Central America or Mexico. According to the American Bird Conservancy, some hummingbirds travel up to 5,000 miles every year.

USA TODAY has compiled bird sighting data from Project FeederWatch to show the hummingbird migration patterns. Here's what it looks like:

Tips for feeding hummingbirds

According to the National Audubon Society, native, flowering plants are the best food source for hummingbirds. But you can help it along its migration journey with a simple feeder.

Mix refined, white sugar and water in a 1:4 ratio, boil it and cool it, and put it out for the birds in feeder. Don't use any food coloring or sweetening agents, as it could harm the birds, the Audubon says.

The Audubon also recommends the following for feeding hummingbirds:

  • Empty and clean the filter once a week in cold weather, twice a week in hot weather
  • Put the feeder out about a week before the birds usually arrive in your area
  • Avoid using pesticides or dish detergent

If you're not having any luck seeing hummingbirds at your feeder, the audubon society suggests hanging it nearby red or orange tubular flower plants, which they are naturally attracted to.

The Best Quote From Each Middle-earth Movie

"It's mine. My quote. My precious."

Juggernaut fantasy franchises are aplenty in the modern landscape of blockbuster-focused filmmaking, but Peter Jackson 's Middle-earth Saga will forever be incredibly hard to top. Taking place in the intricately complex and richly expansive world created by J.R.R. Tolkien , these six movies are full of fascinating world-building, compelling characters, beautifully written storylines, and, of course, highly memorable and quotable dialogue.

From The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey to The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King , the characters of Middle-earth have a very particular way of talking. Lines of dialogue in these films are often poetic and always full of rich meaning ; not a single word is wasted. Of course, though, there is always one quote in each film that stands out above the rest as the most impactful. And while each fan might have their favorite line, few can deny these quotes are the best in their respective movies .

Warning: There are spoilers ahead!

6 "All We Have to Decide Is What to Do With the Time That Is Given to Us."

'the lord of the rings: the fellowship of the ring' (2001).

The one that started it all, The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring is still considered one of the best-ever first films in movie franchises . It's about Frodo Baggins, a meek Hobbit from the Shire, who sets out with eight companions on a journey to destroy the One Ring to save Middle-earth from the rise of the evil tyrant Sauron. It's an incredible way to start a trilogy full of fascinating world-building but also riveting stories that perfectly stand on their own two feet.

One of the movie's most powerful and thematically important scenes is a moment of rest before the relentlessly suspenseful action that takes place in the Mines of Moria. Here, Frodo is sorrowful about how the Ring has impacted his life, wishing "none of this had happened." In one of his usual inspirational speeches, Gandalf gives him words of encouragement , delivering this insightful and poignant line. He invites him to find comfort in the prospect that, perhaps, it was fate that put him in the spot he's in and to think of how to make his struggles worth it. The line is profound and somewhat esoterical , very much in keeping with the trilogy's themes.

5 "There's Some Good in this World, Mr. Frodo, and It's Worth Fighting For."

Samwise gamgee (sean astin) - 'the lord of the rings: the two towers' (2002).

With some moments of exhilarating action and others of profound emotion, as well as one of the franchise's most underrated scenes , The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers is one of the best middle films in any movie trilogy. The story sees Frodo and Sam edge closer to Mordor with the help of the shifty Gollum while the rest of the Fellowship takes a stand against Sauron and Saruman.

Some would argue (and deservedly so) that the single best moment of dialogue in the whole saga is Sam's stirring speech at the end of the movie. Here, in a beautifully written monologue, Sam lays out the themes of the narrative and the causes that make their struggle worth the pain , ending by telling Frodo why they must keep going: Because "there's some good in this world," "and it's worth fighting for." Flawlessly delivered by Sean Astin , one of the many actors robbed of an Oscar nomination for his performance in the trilogy, it's a terrific speech that works as the perfect transition to Return of the King .

The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers

4 "my friends, you bow to no one.", aragorn (viggo mortensen) - 'the lord of the rings: the return of the king' (2003).

One of the movies with the most Oscar nominations in history , tied as the one with the most wins, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King is the trilogy's rousing conclusion. In it, Gandalf and Aragorn lead the armies of Men to fight Sauron so that Frodo and Sam may approach Mount Doom unnoticed and destroy the One Ring.

Of the movie's numerous moments of emotion and excitement, few are as touching as the scene in the third act where Aragorn is crowned in Minas Tirith after Sauron is finally defeated and Middle-earth is in peace. Here, seeing the four Hobbits bow to him, Strider tells them, "You bow to no one," and the entire congregation bows to them instead. It's a beautiful moment that makes it hard not to shed a few tears , watching the praise of these four brave men who proved that their size didn't determine their worth.

The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King

3 "i've found it is the small things, everyday deeds of ordinary folk, that keeps the darkness at bay. simple acts of kindness and love.", gandalf (ian mckellen) 'the hobbit: an unexpected journey' (2012).

Nine years after the Lord of the Rings trilogy, fans were eager to return to Middle-earth; The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey scratched that itch. Not many would call it one of the best prequels of all time , but it certainly brought lots of interesting things to the table, as well as offering the thrill of returning characters and familiar locations. Sixty years before the events of The Lord of the Rings , it's about a Hobbit who joins a wizard and a party of dwarves on a quest to reclaim the dwarves's home from the dragon Smaug.

When the White Council gathered in Rivendel to discuss how to handle the situation of Sauron's supposed return, one of the old familiar faces that viewers get to see is Lady Galadriel. Here, Galadriel asks Gandalf why he chose Bilbo to join their company. Unsure, Gandalf answers that he finds tremendous power in the "everyday deeds of ordinary folk" like Bilbo and that the Hobbit gives him courage in their dark times. It's a touching line, as well as a reminder of the core message at the heart of the whole saga : surprising amounts of courage lie in even the most unexpected of people.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

2 "if this is to end in fire, then we will all burn together", torin oakenshield ii (richard armitage) - 'the hobbit: the desolation of smaug' (2013).

The Hobbit trilogy is filled with memorable and iconic lines of dialogue , and The Desolation of Smaug is no exception. This sequel follows the dwarves, the hobbit Bilbo and the wizard Gandalf on the continuation of their quest to reclaim Erebor from Smaug the dragon. Meanwhile, Bilbo grows more familiar with his newly acquired mysterious ring.

In one of the film's most pivotal scenes, after narrowly escaping Smaug's deadly fire, the dwarves and Bilbo find themselves trapped in a room full of dead dwarves. "The last of our kin," Balin mutters. Though the team wants to play it safe and hide in the mines, Thorin refuses to die, "clawing for breath," instead ordering his friends to help him fight the dragon in the forges, delivering this rousing sentence that could bring chills to anyone. Despite its seemingly inspiring nature, this line speaks to the arrogance of this dwarf who shook the fate of Middle-earth and to the terrible effect that dragon sickness had on his heart.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug

1 "if more people valued home above gold, this world would be a merrier place.", torin oakenshield ii (richard armitage) - 'the hobbit: the battle of the five armies' (2014).

Even if it's typically considered the weakest installment in the Middle-earth saga, The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies still has an awful lot to offer those who love Tolkien's Legendarium. Marketed as the epic conclusion of the franchise, it's about Thorin's company being forced to take part in a war against an array of combatants to keep the Lonely Mountain from falling into the hands of the rising darkness.

The film is fun and action-packed, particularly if one watches the R-rated extended edition . It brings the arc of all major characters to a satisfying close—including those that are poignantly tragic. This includes Thorin Oakenshield, who dies in combat against Azog, the Orc-lord. The last person he sees is Bilbo, in whose arms he takes his last breath. His last conversation with the Hobbit is deeply moving , telling him to return to the comfort of the Shire and praising his valuing of "home above gold," which encapsulates one of the driving themes of the Hobbit trilogy .
