Kansas players set to cash in thanks to NIL, potentially setting a model for future NCAA title-winning teams

Jayhawk players will reap financial rewards for their 'barnstorming tour' after winning the ncaa championship.

kunilusatsi.jpg

Imagine a world in which every national champion in men's and women's basketball — football, too — celebrated their spoils in ways that earned players money and allowed them to profit on their accomplishments.

You don't have to imagine it after all: that world is here.

Kansas men's basketball is about to set the model for what every national title winner in the three biggest collegiate team sports can and probably will do after every national championship game moving forward. As it was  recently reported , Kansas players will soon embark on a statewide "barnstorming" tour of publicity and celebration in light of the Jayhawks' 2022 NCAA Tournament title . Kansas has done things like this in the past, with its outgoing seniors, but this time it's different. This time all players can, and will, profit off their achievements, their names, their images, their likenesses and their legendary local statuses as 2022 national champions.

As they should.

Every player, all 18 on Kansas' roster, is scheduled to be there. Notably, that includes First Team All-American /Final Four Most Outstanding Player Ochai Agbaji , in addition to Final Four hero David McCormack , future NBA Draft pick Christian Braun and potential returning starters DaJuan Harris Jr . and Jalen Wilson .

There's even a website for this celebratory tour, complete with a countdown clock and this message: "Join us for a night of fun filled with silent, live auctions and autograph signings with all 18 players. This is something to celebrate as it has only been seniors at previous barnstorming tours. Don't miss the silent and live auctions that will take place during the event and halftime. You won't want to miss the opportunity to win some of KU special player's memorabilia. Saturday, April 23rd come cheer on your national champions. Rock Chalk!"

They'll start by visiting a high school in Wichita, Kansas. Memorabilia will be signed. Photos with Kansas players and giddy KU fans — young and old — will be taken. There will be a special VIP dinner, and the players will also participate in a skills camp for the kids who attend. Fans will also get to see a little live-action basketball, as KU's players will play a scrimmage for fun.

Sounds like a dream experience after months and months of hard work that led to a cherished championship run. Kansas players will bask in their title glory, while Jayhawks fans will get a chance to experience something that they'll remember for the rest of their lives. Tickets will go for as little as $30 to as much as $125.

Arguably the best part: Kansas' players are set to collectively receive 70% of the ticket revenue from however many of these events wind up happening in the coming weeks. What's more, any championship Kansas gear that is sold, 100% of those profits will go right back to the players. This is the platonic ideal of NIL rights in action. It's merit based. Kansas won the national title, now its players get to reap the benefits of their labor by getting paid — and it's all allowable under name, image and likeness rules.

Everybody wins.

Kansas was prepared for this as well. The school partnered with a company called 6th Man Strategies — which was started by former KU baseball player Matt Baty — in the fall of 2021. Kansas basketball is the biggest deal in that state. There were going to be humongous NIL opportunities, and Baty knew it. By virtue of winning the national title, Kansas' players now have an opportunity to go out into the community, celebrate their title and get a little bonus cash on the side.

The world of NIL has exploded with an array of individual moneymaking opportunities. What Kansas is doing here is a twist on that: it's for the whole team. A communal experience. It's a way for everyone, from Agbaji and McCormack to the walk-ons, to capitalize on their accomplishments. A wonderful thing, and the latest example that NIL rights for players enhances the college-athlete experience.

This is only the beginning. The possibilities are expansive. Expect to see Kansas' title tour template become the norm for national champions in the years to come; it would be a wasted opportunity otherwise. To root for a college sports team is to ingratiate yourself in the highs and lows of fandom. When a team wins a title, it uplifts a community in many ways. Schools have always profited off of championship gear, commemorative memorabilia and the like. They still will.

Now the players get their share.

What if Alabama wins another title in football in 2023? Sure, the roster is much larger, but don't you think an army of Alabama fans around that state wouldn't gleefully show up and pay to shake hands, take pictures and bid on auction items from the CFP title game? Of course. The same goes for any other fan base, and this is probably only the start. Creative minds will eventually come up with bigger and broader ways to rally community support and put a little money in players' pockets after making school history.

Take your pick: UConn, Stanford or South Carolina women's basketball;  Clemson , Georgia or Ohio State football;  Duke or Kentucky or Gonzaga or North Carolina or any team that winds up winning the 2023 men's national title in basketball. Doesn't matter what state, what school or how it's done: everyone wants to celebrate a championship, doing so even beyond holding a parade. All title-winning schools could all take advantage of this in the future the way Kansas is now. They'd be foolish not to.

Barnstorming Tour allows KU basketball players to hold on to their season a little longer

PITTSBURG — Inside John Lance Arena, smiles and laughs were rampant among the many Kansas men’s basketball players there.

This was Sunday in Pittsburg, during the last stop of the 2023 Barnstorming Tour that followed the team’s 2022-23 season. The past two days of the three-day, three-city tour around the state of Kansas had seen these Jayhawk athletes greet crowds in both Dodge City and Wichita. And if there was any fatigue from the travel, the excitement of those eager to meet the players they admired was there to provide a boost.

So much will look different when the coach Bill Self-led Kansas Jayhawks take the floor next season for their season opener. So much of the months ahead will be about Kansas’ new-look roster trying to build the necessary chemistry to defend the program’s latest Big 12 Conference regular-season title. But the 2023 Barnstorming Tour provided the 2022-23 Jayhawks in attendance a chance to hold on to their season together a little bit longer.

“I think it just gives us a chance to have our last, kind of, hangouts, and last for a while because all guys are going different ways,” said Jalen Wilson, who’s declared for the NBA draft. “Obviously, it’s not the same, because we don’t have the whole team here. Guys transferred. But it’s still fun times, fun times just to bond with the guys.”

Wilson praised the fans at each stop they made, and noted it feels great to be able to have this moment with them. Last year, just like this year, he approached the tour as if it would be the last chapter of his time at Kansas because he had his mind set on turning pro. But unlike last year, this year he really is going to turn pro and start that new chapter of his life.

Kevin McCullar Jr., another veteran who’s going to go through the NBA’s pre-draft process, had not been a part of this tour before because he started his college career at Texas Tech. To be a part of it, after what could be his first and only season with the Jayhawks this past season, exceeded his expectations. He thought it was cool that they were able to travel to different communities that might not get to come to Lawrence as often as others.

RELATED: KU basketball’s Gradey Dick, Jalen Wilson may train together ahead of 2023 NBA draft

Wilson will remember the bus rides and more from this year’s tour. McCullar will remember being able to spend time on the court with the kids who came to see them, because he can remember how fun it was to be in their position when he was growing up. The simplicity of all the interactions the tour provided them is in part what makes the tour itself special.

“Just taking it all in, I was just enjoying every day of it with the guys,” McCullar said. “A lot of us are about to go do different things, and be working out and stuff, so it was cool to be able to spend some more time with them.”

Kansas basketball barnstorming tour continues Friday in Topeka, more dates coming this summer

By matt tait     apr 26, 2022.

kansas barnstorming tour 2023

The Kansas men’s basketball program’s national championship barnstorming tour will continue Friday night at Washburn University in Topeka.

The event begins at 5 p.m., and it looks like there could be even more dates coming in the months ahead.

The tour, which began last weekend with a huge crowd at Wichita East High School, has six more stops scheduled between Friday and May 8.

According to 6th Man Strategies co-founder Matt Baty, they’re looking to add more tour stops this summer, too.

“There has been a significant amount of interest from schools and communities to bring the national champions

to town,” Baty said. “We are in discussions with how we can expand this tour once summer school starts in June and July so fans can get a first look at some of the new freshmen and possible transfers, while (taking) our celebration to new locations. The guys are asking for more and having fun so we

want to get out as much as possible.”

As of today, the tour’s next stops after Friday’s fun at Washburn includes a trip to Hays High School on Saturday, an event at Blue Valley Northwest High School on Sunday and two stops in Kansas City, Missouri the following week — May 6 at Rockhurst High School and May 8 at Pembroke High School.

The Jayhawks also will visit the Dodge City Convention Center on May 7.

The event is essentially a big celebration of all things Kansas basketball. Fans who purchase tickets to attend will get to meet the players, line up for autographs and watch the team play a pick-up game. An interactive skills camp, games, a Q&A and live and silent auctions are also part of the fun.

Tickets can be purchased online at barnstormingtour.com. A ticket for admission sells for $30 but that does not guarantee autographs. The only way to guarantee a trip through the autograph line is to purchase a VIP reserved ticket for $75.

Visit the website for specific details about each site, including options for dinner and other VIP events.

Seventy percent of the proceeds from the Barnstorming Tour goes directly to the players through name, image and likeness initiatives. The remaining 30% goes to the school or venue hosting the event to cover facility rental.

Players will receive 100% of the proceeds they generate from the sale of individual silent and live auction items, and players who have exhausted their eligibility can auction off game worn jerseys, shoes and gear.

Not every player from the 2021-22 national championship team will attend every event.
