Kate Rusby announces Christmas tour

Kate Rusby

Kate Rusby, hailed as the ‘First Lady of Folk’ and a Mercury Music accolade to her name, has forged an impressive 30-year, headlining career.

A folk singer at heart, she’s taken the genre to new heights appealing way beyond the folk scene and her Yorkshire roots, headlining in the UK and internationally, performing with other big names in music across genres. She has a number of TV, radio and film credits to her name as well as her own record company and festival.

2022 celebrates 30 years in the business with a new album 30 : Happy Returns featuring guests: Richard Hawley, KT Tunstall and Ladysmith Black Mambazo to name a few. This follows the success of her 2020 Top 10 charting covers album Hand Me Down .

Hailed as ‘The Start of Christmas’ for many, a Kate Rusby Christmas Concert perpetuates the tradition of Yorkshire carols, specific carols sung in the crowded pubs of South Yorkshire. Kate was immersed in those songs as a child, so these songs are in her bones. For over 200 years, from late-November to New Year’s Day, communities would congregate in their local public house, to belt out their versions of familiar carols, carols that were often frowned upon by the church in Victorian times as ‘too happy’.

Her happiness, humour and storytelling are a feature of Kate’s live shows. Each auditorium becomes her local pub or front room and we are her welcomed guests. Joining her on stage for this unmissable evening of Christmas cheer will be, as ever, her hugely talented and intuitive band of musicians including producer and husband Damien O’Kane as well as a top-flight brass quintet affectionately known as The Brass Boys.

Kate Rusby at Christmas, Fairfield Halls, Croydon live review

Laura Cooney

It’s safe to say that Kate Rusby is something of a folk music legend. Originally from Barnsley, she’s been at the forefront of celebrating the music of her Yorkshire roots and beyond for over three decades. Earlier this year, she released her latest album, ’30: Happy Returns’ earlier this year – the follow-up to 2020’s top 10 covers album ‘Hand Me Down’ – which features the likes of Richard Hawley, KT Tunstall and Ladysmith Black Mambazo. But she’s also become one of the key voices of Christmas, releasing five festive records and embarking on an annual Christmas tour, which last night made its first ever stop at Croydon’s Fairfields Hall.

Supported by her five-piece band – including husband Damien O’Kane, who lead the group in a stirring instrumental medley midway through the second set – a brass quintet known as the Brass Boys and Ruby Tuesday the animatronic reindeer, Rusby opened her set with ‘Hark Hark’. It’s a mellow, upbeat song that shows the soft, sweet tones of her voice, which glides effortlessly over the lush melody and has a wonderful soothing, comforting feel – you feel like you’re in the hands of an expert right from the off. She also revealed that she was battling a cold, but you absolutely wouldn’t have known it, with her voice sounding almost indistinguishable from her records.

Over her two sets, Rusby took the packed audience on a journey through the carols she’d sung in the pubs of South Yorkshire, as well as those from further afield such as the sharp yet smooth ‘Cornish Wassailing’ and her fusion of two versions of ‘The Dilly Carol’. She also crammed the performance full of jokes and stories, running the gamut from everything to people she’d met at college to the perils of getting older and tales about her family and childhood, as she layered up over her sparkly dress with mittens and a scarf. It added a lovely sense of warmth to the performance and the audience responded to that in spades. She also regularly encouraged them to join in with her on everything from classic carols like ‘O Little Town Of Bethlehem’ to the quickfire chorus of the lively ‘Kris Kringle’, which she even filmed a snippet of – look out for that at the end of the tour! – and raise their fists in the air as she sang the tale of a Yorkshire Tea-powered superhero in ‘Big Brave Bill Saves Christmas’.

Although there were plenty of bright moments, such as ‘Here We Come A-Wassailing’ and the delicate ‘Christmas Is Merry’, for me some of the highlights were the moodier tracks. ‘The Holly King’ was an early standout, with Rusby introducing the song with how she was inspired to write it on a dog walk, and packed full of drama and storytelling. Elsewhere, second set opener ‘Paradise’ had a haunting quality to it that made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up, with Rusby’s angelic voice contrasting the sparse melody, while ‘Let The Bells Ring’ provided a wonderfully hopeful yet moving moment. I also loved her various takes on When Shepherds Watched Their Flocks By Night, including the uplifting ‘Sweet Chiming Bells’ and ‘Hail Chime On’ with its more laid-back arrangement.

After closing her second set with her take on ‘Winter Wonderland’ (and another singalong!), Rusby and her band departed the stage to huge cheers and applause from the audience, before returning for an encore. As is tradition on Rusby’s Christmas tours, they ended in fancy dress, with costumes ranging from everything to a horse to a well-known Christmas chocolate box to Barbie and even Father Christmas! Once the crew was assembled, Rusby lead them in a performance of ‘Sweet Bells’, the title track of her first Christmas album released back in 2008. For me the performance summed up the whole show – gorgeous vocals, fantastic musicianship from the band, and a wonderful sense of fun and humour.

Overall I left Kate Rusby’s Christmas show feeling in a thoroughly festive mood. It’s an utterly joyful show that truly celebrates classic carols and folk music, as well as showing off her skills as a songwriter and the talents of her band. Throw in her wonderfully engaging performance, and you feel like you’ve been transported to a South Yorkshire pub for a few hours and can allow all your worries to melt away. It’s definitely something I’m going to try and make a staple of my Christmas season from now on and I’d urge you all to snap up a ticket for next year’s tour as soon as you can! And in the meantime, there’s always the new album…

At The Barrier

Live music, reviews and opinion / est. 2018, kate rusby at christmas – york barbican: live review.

Kate Rusby at Christmas – York Barbican – 18th December 2022

rusby

Festive songs, seasonal shenanigans and manly tunes. It’s the traditional way to end the year and one that Kate Rusby and her trusty (and trusted) band – Aaron Jones, Damien O’Kane, Nick Cooke, and Duncan Lyall joined on things to be hit by Josh Clarke – have nailed. In times of austerity, how good was it to see a pretty packed out Barbican as well, gathered to share an evening of pre-Christmas spirit with the self-confessed Holly Head (def: person who derives unquestionable glee at the thought of Christmas).

She’s even written a song that celebrates the Holly King, inspired by an encounter with a local Narnia/frosty environment and stories from childhood of the battles between the Holly and Ivy Kings. It’s a rare moment of drama as Nick Cooke even abandons his line of melodeons (melodia?) to join Josh Clarke on some restrained percussion thunder. It also follows a sprightly opening with voices and hearts (and hands) warmed by a volley of Hark Hark-ing, the chiming of Sweet Bells and the first of several Wassails. The latter seeing Her Kateness musing over the nature of leather skin purse in Here We Come A-Wassailling – reference is made to Silence Of The Lambs serial killer Buffalo Bill…

Moving swiftly on…it’s impossible not to get caught up in the festive mood as the sounds pour from the stage. One that’s beautifully lit and decorated, nay dressed, in signature fashion; the mic stand resembling a feathery boa, a overhead curtain of starry lights and some of the famous crocheted snowflakes. Not forgetting the enormous snowflake backdrop that hides a subtle ’30’ reminding us that even with a decade of so of Christmas tours in the bag, 2022 marks thirty years of Kate Rusby performing professionally.

Over to one side, Ruby (2) the reindeer stands , suitably lit and adding the occasional head nod, tended by Aaron Jones multitasking on various six and eight stringed things. The gentle pump of brass from those brass boys who come to the party at Christmas time, gives most of the set a warmth and it has to be said, a very Yorkshire/Last Of The Summer Wine vibe. A lively and hard to fault first half that sees us dashing between the traditions of South Yorkshire and Cornwall is brought to a close with the traditional carol Little Town Of Bethlehem before we come full circle to Paradise that introduces set 2. The latter showcases the sound of Kate Rusby in 2022 with the of reverb of electric guitars and Moog synths inducing an otherworldly ambience.

Along with the “h o-ho-ho “-ing of Kris Kringle (watch out for the audience participation video compilation from the tour) and the latest in the Big Brave Bill series, the highlight of set 2 comes when the ten strong band are left to let loose on a handful of tunes from Damien O’Kane, Duncan Lyall and friends and where Aaron Jones leads the line with some hefty work on the bouzouki. Having said that, the sentiment of Let The Bells Ring – celestial ambience to the fore once more – is enough to melt the hardest of hearts.

Our annual pilgrimage once again proves how you can’t beat a good old wassail to stir the Christmas spirit. We take our leave all set for the big day to see what he brings. Five seasonal collections have been mined for the evening’s entertainment although being a teeny bit fussy, there’s been no Misteltoe Bough (yet) but a hint dropped for 2023. Here’s to it.

Being Honest didn't know anything about Kate Rusby as went along with friends, so a little apprehensive. Amazed by my reaction to the show being very positive with Kate's down to earth approach to her music and her interaction with her audience.

Kate's insight to why she was presenting these Christmas songs was very interesting to learn and a delight to listen to. Her backing band were amazing, in fact it made me wish I had kept up on my accordian lessons from my teenage days - and wow all the musicians were brilliant. Audience participation in choruses was enjoyable.

Come back to Norwich again Kate you have another fan.

I didn't know anything about Kate Rusby until I saw her live at Radio 2's Festival in a Day this September gone, in Hyde Park. Among a number of names I was very familiar with and looking forward to enjoying live, she was one of the few unknowns to me.

Honestly, if I had hated the rest of the festival (and for the record, I didn't; it was fantastic), it would still have been worth going for Kate Rusby's five-song set - for that sublime live performance, and for the fact that this was how I found her.

Most people considering seeing her live won't be in the dark as I was, so I won't go on about what you already know - the exquisite beauty of the folk songs she writes, her heavenly voice, the understated fingerpicking of the acoustic guitar underscoring every song. I will tell you that she is brilliant live, as you might imagine; her voice is every bit as glorious when you're facing the stage she's on as it is when you're sitting inside curled up with her music coming through your earphones, or standing outside in the English sunshine with the sound of it drifting out through the kitchen window.

She has a great stage presence too, largely because she is such a warm and sweet character. She talks as if having a casual chat with thousands of people at once, in her lovely accent, and is very down-to-earth. When I saw her, she was full of praise for her home county (it was a couple of days after the PM's less than complimentary remarks were overheard and reported) and implored us all to visit.

Overall a really great and uplifting set to have been able to witness live, even just as a standalone event; and, as I said, it introduced me to a singer/songwriter I now can't stop listening to (and, by extension, a genre I had neglected for far too long)... 10/10 from me. Awkward Annie was a great song to finish on, too.

After a successful 2022 with a new album ‘30 : Happy Returns’, Kate rounds off the year in celebratory style with a Christmas tour full of warmth, music and sparkles.

Hailed as  “the start of Christmas”  for many, a Kate Rusby Christmas Concert perpetuates the tradition of Yorkshire carols; specific carols sung in the crowded pubs of South Yorkshire. Kate sat in the corner of those crowded pubs as a child, so the songs she brings to these shows are in her bones. For over two hundred years, from late-November to New Year’s Day, North Derbyshire and South Yorkshire communities would congregate on Sunday lunchtimes, in their local public house, to belt out their own versions of familiar carols, carols that were often frowned upon by the church in Victorian times as ‘too happy’.

“ Kate Rusby remains Britain’s most popular female folk singer because she has mastered the art of Christmas songs” The Guardian

Often hailed as the ‘First Lady of Folk’ and with a Mercury Music accolade to her name, Kate has forged an impressive 30-year career. A folk singer at heart, she’s taken the genre to new heights appealing way beyond the folk scene and her Yorkshire roots, headlining in the UK and internationally, performing with other major music stars across genres.   She has a number of TV, radio and film credits to her name as well as her own record company and festival. 2022 celebrates 30 years in the business with a new album  ’30 : Happy Returns’  featuring guests: Richard Hawley , KT Tunstall and Ladysmith Black Mambazo to name a few. This follows the success of her 2020 Top 10 charting covers album ‘Hand Me Down’.

Her happiness, humour and storytelling are a feature of Kate’s live shows. Each auditorium becomes her local pub or front room and audience members are her welcomed and well-cared-for guests.  Joining her on stage for this unmissable evening of Christmas cheer will be, as ever, her hugely talented and intuitive band of musicians including producer and husband  Damien O’Kane  as well as a top-flight brass quintet affectionately known as  The Brass Boys.

Tour Dates are as follows:

Kate Rusby at Christmas

Thursday 19 December 2019 7:30pm Liverpool Philharmonic Hall

Join Kate Rusby when she returns to Liverpool Philharmonic for her hugely popular Christmas tour.

Holly Head , Kate's brand new album, is one of the warmest Christmas albums you’ll ever encounter. Winter is supposed to be the season of barrenness, of Jack Frost nipping at your nose and of needing your big coat. It may get dark at four o’clock and you may become cynically sick of Slade, John Rutter albums and Merry, Merry Christmas by New Kids On The Block by the second week in December, but Holly Head will illuminate and kindle hearts and hearths. It’s the Christmas album you’ll still be compelled to play, guilt-free, at significant volume.

Kate’s Christmas concerts perpetuate the tradition of Yorkshire carols, which means that each show evokes the spirit of a crowded pub. Happiness, her humour and her storytelling are a feature, and each auditorium becomes her local pub or her front room, and audiences are her welcomed and well-cared-for guests.

'Kate Rusby remains Britain’s most popular female folk singer because she has mastered the art of Christmas songs' The Guardian With a career spanning 25 years in music, Kate Rusby is one of the finest interpreters of traditional folk songs and one of the most emotive original songwriters - melding old and new so you can barely see the join. She’s a Mercury-Prize nominee, and has won ‘Folk Singer of the Year’, ‘Best Live Act’, ‘Best Album’ and ‘Best Original Song’ at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards. Kate has released three albums of Yorkshire festive songs and carols and this year’s Christmas tour will feature tracks from all four festive collections.

This unmissable evening will celebrate what makes Christmas so special and fun as Kate and her fellow musicians perform fabulous songs brimful of the goodwill and spirituality of the season and in doing so put smiles on faces and joy in our hearts.

9% administrative fee applies for online & telephone orders. A £2.50 postage fee is applicable on all orders if opting for postal delivery. More information about booking fees
